By Dave Scott I have written an article about multiple sclerosis (MS) around this time for many years now. Each time, I would chat with Dr. Dave Horton, a long-standing member of the local MS Society Chapter. We always hit on the upcoming walk and any other events that may be coming to the community (the MS Walk takes place May 4th at Holy Trinity High School and there is a fundraising breakfast at Kaley’s Restaurant in Simcoe on April 5th).

In this month’s issue of the Norfolk Hub Magazine, I sit with Dr. Horton and we talk about how multiple sclerosis has had an impact on his family since 1977, when his wife, Judy, was diagnosed with MS. According to the MS website (www.mssociety. ca): An estimated 100,000 Canadians have multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40, we know that it affects children, some as young as two years old. The impact is felt by family, friends and by the community. MS

Courtesy of the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise Jim Carroll received the prestigious award of a Paul Harris Fellowship at the First Baptist Church service on Sunday March 30. Jim continues to live the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” he demonstrated during his teaching career, his endless hours outside of the classroom, coaching many girls basketball teams over the years taking

them on to championships, and helping many young people at the school become involved in music and in theatre. In the community he has given leadership and support to many theatre experiences for young and old through Simcoe Little Theatre, and several other venues.

Within his church he has been the unpaid volunteer Music Director for more than 20 years, singing, playing the flute, and playing the piano etc. but of greater value giving

dozens of children and adults the opportunity to learn and grow through music. A long list of other contributions made over years and years of leadership and service would cover different boards and Sunday school and other activities demonstrate his kindness, dedication, and volunteerism. He is a great humanitarian, counselling those who need help. Norfolk Sunrise is proud to recognise him as a Paul Harris Fellow.

By Dave Scott As I drove into the parking area of the St. John’s Parish Hall, Woodhouse, I was very impressed with the amount of cars in the lot. I wondered if the dinners were always this busy.

I made my way just inside the hall door where a couple of gentlemen were chatting about how the area’s congregation had changed over the years and how with shrinking families, things were changing.

Sheila Hastie (who is a warden for the church) spotted me and came over to say hi. She, like many of the other volunteers, was wearing her St. John’s apron and was busy helping as folks waited in line for the delicious dinner. As I made my way out of the entry, into the sitting area I noticed my neighbour, Mary D’ettorre, working the door so I had to stop and share a laugh with her. Then I noticed Sharon Judd working away behind her, writing receipts for the dinner. I sat down next to Sharon and asked if someone was

St. Patrick’s Day morning, Simcoe Lions Chief Glenford Deming presented a generous pot of gold in the form of a $10,000 cheque to the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation 2014 Golf Tournament. The funds raised during the 2 day July event will go to the refurbishing of the Labour and Deliver unit. The donation is part of the Lions Club’s ongoing commitment to NGH dating back to the early days of the hospital. Over the past 5 years alone, the Lions have contributed close to $50,000.00.

We thank each of the 97 members of the Simcoe Lions for their ongoing support.” said Foundation Director Julie Powell. going to relieve the poor guy (Sharon’s husband) parking cars in the lot. She laughed and said her husband likes it, plus he has all that experience from the fair. Sharon said this dinner was a great success and that they were already getting low on food at 5:45 pm. This was going to be a wonderful fundraiser. I peeked over at one of the tables and noticed Sheila Miller, another friend, and across the hall I noticed Virginia Drayson. It was nice to see so many positive and impactful folks out in support of the fundraiser.

As I sat there I realized why the hall was such an important part of our community. It was the value it placed on neighbourly support and being social; folks were relaxed and cheerful. Looking around the room you could see the smiles and the easy flow of conversation; it was easy to feel welcome and enjoy the company.

I guess I am getting a little off topic, there was another piece of business, the celebration of the $30,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium

Foundation, which helped renovate the hall and add two wheelchair accessible washrooms. I have to tell you, the hall looks great and the new washrooms are a wonderful addition.

The congregation should be very proud of their commitment and dedication to creating such a comfortable and inviting hall. Who knew all those years ago, when the cheese factory was brought down from Rockford and converted into the hall, that it would be part of so many lives… wedding receptions, birthday parties, retirement celebrations, fitness and dance classes, card parties… all bringing folks together. Huh, if these walls could talk… lives from generations gone by, the love and caring.

I now know why I felt so comfortable coming in the front door.

By Dave Scott As many others have done this past week, I stopped by the Arbor in Port Dover and had an ArborDog (foot long Arbor hotdog) with all the fixings and a Golden Glow to quench my thirst. It was, believe it or not, an almost sunny, kind of nice, warm day. I enjoyed my lunch and a few days later, I stopped back to chat with owner, Tony Schneider Junior, about the upcoming season.

Tony and I go way back, playing atom hockey together and then every other year on the same team right up to juvenile. We even coached together for a couple of years. Of course, like every other Dover kid, I worked at the Arbor.

That was 30 years ago. It was the first summer the Schneider family took over the reins from the Ryerse family (who had started the hotdog stand some 65 years before that).

As I walked in the side door of the Arbor, Tony was working the fryers, preparing for lunch. Like every time we have a conversation, it didn’t take long before it was consumed by sports. For Tony and I, it is what we know and how we communicate. It could be any sport from hockey to basketball, local to national, it just happens.

After getting caught up, we talked about the upcoming season for business.

Right now for the Arbor, it is kinda like their baseball spring training, with Tony their manager

Tony Schneider Junior, owner of the Arbor in Port Dover and coaches around him teaching new staff, having a few surprises when old timers like myself stop by, and getting everyone up to speed for the home opener… that first, hot weekend when everyone comes out… and it is play ball!

The other resemblance to baseball is, like any major league team the importance to getting off to a good start, business wise.

Tony explained that nice weather in the spring can lead to a very good year and is important. The same as in baseball you do not want to be 15 games out before May 24th weekend.

It won’t be long before, as they say in baseball, the dog days of summer are here and you guessed it, it is the same at the Arbor.

The long hot days working in the booth, ArborDog after ArborDog rolling out, the clean cool taste of Glow quenching the thirst of the visiting tourists strolling up from the beach.

The endless days of summer slowly turn to September and the playoff hunt begins. So it will be for folks from all over southern Ontario, striving to get to the Arbor for one last breath of summer and an ArborDog before it is too late. As in baseball, the pennant race is in full drive.

October will come as will the cold. The staff at the Arbor will be bundled up like a relief pitcher in the bullpen at the World Series trying to keep warm.

There is the last crack of the bat at the World Series, and a few days later the crack of the flaps closing over the windows of the Arbor will signal the end of another season.

ilver L ake R owing Club Explores Expansion to Waterford Courtesy of Silver Lake Rowing Club and Waterford Heritage Trail Group Representatives of the Silver Lake Rowing Club have met with the Waterford Heritage Trail group to discuss an expansion of its Port Dover based rowing program. Establishing a satellite club in the centrally located ponds in Waterford is seen as a way to further promote the sport of rowing in Norfolk, Haldimand and Brant counties. People involved in the redevelopment of Waterford’s rail lands feel that rowing fits well with their goal of encouraging more people to come and make the most of its trails and waterways for healthy outdoor activities.

Still in the feasibility stage, a tour of Shadow Lake is planned in the near future to determine its suitability for rowing, and to inspect the areas proposed for a dock and boat storage. If things fall into place, a presentation will be made to Norfolk Council for permission to use the ponds. Pending its approval, a one-year trial period for the program would begin in June with equipment on loan from the Silver Lake Club.

day. This means short visits, a lot of information exchanged quickly and an emphasis on the patient being able to handle it all. In the elderly population this can be a very bad combination of events that can lead to serious consequences.

Medication mishaps cause a huge number of hospitalizations and in fact the majority of hospital re-admissions. Making more time for visits with aging and complex patients is critical to avoid mishaps of poor communication and rushed decisions. Slowing down the process is essential to help avoid possible life threatening mistakes. There are three simple rules that all elderly patients and their caregivers can follow that will help to slow down the process.

1. Never alone.

Elderly patients should be encouraged to bring a trusted person to all medical visits, and this should not be, if possible, their equally elderly spouse. This advocate in the room can act as a second set of ears, write down vital information and ask questions that might seem intimidating for the older senior to ask the doctor.

2. Pace medical decisions.

Allow more time for reflection and the generation of questions, time for talks with family and friends, time for research on-line helps all of us to better understand our situations. Medical interventions in the elderly can have very serious consequences on quality of life; these decisions cannot be made in a 5 minute scrum.

Take the information home, consult family and think about the consequences of having or not having the intervention. Consider all possible outcomes, good or bad, before making the decision.

3. Re-assess medications.

The value of medications can change over time.

What was wise and useful to take when younger in hopes for a healthier future can diminish in value as one ages. There are many examples of this, the most obvious being the trend to prescribe cholesterol lowering medications.

These medications may have some benefit if prescribed to younger people and possibly help prevent heart disease down the road. Fine if you’re forty, might be worth the side-effects, but to prescribe the same medication to a 90 year old because a blood test result indicates higher than normal cholesterol is medicine that has no proven outcome. These medications are known to cause dizziness in some people.

Falls in the elderly are the number one reason for hospitalization. My call a couple of months ago for some predators to deal with a major mouse issue here was answered by both a coyote, which was seen several times, and a fox, which casually wandered through the back yard early one morning last week.

Although the common name for this canine is “Red Fox”, not all members of the species are actually red. Other common colour variations include brown and black and two or more colours may show up in one litter. The most common colour, however, is red and comes in a variety of shades. A slightly darker red line runs along the back and forms a cross at the shoulders. Other markings vary from individual to individual but may include black paws, black behind the ears, a faint black muzzle, white or light undersides and throat, a white tail tip, and white stockings.

Red foxes that have mainly black fur with whitetipped guard hairs are known as silver foxes, and were particularly valuable in the fur trade.

Foxes are able to live in a wide range of habitats and are one of the most widespread mammals in Canada, found in all provinces and territories.

Since the arrival of Europeans to North America in the 16th century, the population of foxes has increased. According to scientists, this may be because pioneers thinned the dense forests, creating more habitat for foxes, and killed many of the wolves that had preyed on foxes.

In the past, foxes have gotten a bad reputation from both farmers and children’s fairy tales, in which authors have described the fox as bold, cunning and deceitful. They are, however, in fact shy, secretive and nervous, but appear to be very intelligent. Back in the days when every

Excellent eyesight, a keen sense of smell, and acute hearing make foxes incredibly successful hunters. Just the twitch of an ear can help a fox locate a rabbit and they can hear movement underground or under the snow to easily locate their prey. Tundra Swans have few natural enemies other than humans. An irritated adult Tundra Swan can be a formidable opponent and a pair working together can usually fend off nestand cygnet-predators such as eagles, jaegers, wolves, foxes and bears. The biggest enemy that Tundra Swans face is the weather. Adverse weather on their breeding grounds can cause heavy casualties among the young and water pollution and freeze-ups in their winter habitat often reduces food supplies.

Although there is limited open water on the lake, the Tundra Swans have once again arrived and are already heading north by the hundreds.

Flocks can be seen and heard throughout the area during the day and night as they continue their migration from the Atlantic coast in Chesapeake Bay, in Maryland, and in North Carolina to their Arctic breeding grounds.

The Tundra Swan is the most common of the three swan species found in North America.

This large bird, formerly known as the Whistling Swan, has white plumage and black legs, feet, and bill. The other native North American swan, the Trumpeter Swan, is slightly larger and does not have a small yellow mark at the base of the bill, close to the eye, which can be seen on the Tundra Swan at close range. One other swan found here is the Mute Swan, brought from Europe, which has an easily identifiable orange bill.

The former name for the Tundra Swan referred to the whistling sound made by the slow, powerful beating of the wings in flight, not to the voice of the bird.

Join a Hamilton Naturalist Club member and enjoy an early Spring walk on the Marion Chivas Trail to view early spring flowers, the first bird arrivals, and enjoy the serenity of this HNC property. Note that this 1.3 km trail is moderately difficult with some steep portions.
