Jump for Joy! 30,000 R aised!! $

By Dave Scott I met with Mary Taylor, Canadian Tire Simcoe Store Owner and Jason Babbage, General Manager last September. Mary and Jason were looking to liven up the February blues with a ‘Funuary’ Jumpstart fundraiser. As we sat around brainstorming, I mentioned that it might be nice to tie things back to the February 2014 Olympics. Mary loved the idea and let Jason and I loose to develop the concept.

The idea was a simple one; we invite companies to workout at Canadian Tire during business hours during the two weeks that the Games were on. The potential was there, but we knew we would need a lot of community involvement and commitment. I have to say in typical Norfolk fashion folks came through!

As the days to our opening ceremony neared, momentum began to build (just like the games themselves). Mary, Jason and the Canadian Tire staff created a wonderful workout gym as you walked in the store on the left, with a rest area and a big screen TV playing the Winter Olympics put you in the spirit. Posters went up, the Jumpstart tent stood proud and the Jumpstart the Games feel was present. A special thanks to Wendy Inglis from Canadian Tire for her amazing work in setting up the area, collecting donations, providing snacks and water for all our participants.

Finally February 7th arrived and at 10 am local businesses and dignitaries gathered to be part of the Jumpstart the Games Opening Ceremony. Sue Veltri arrived with the torch and Mary officially declared Jumpstart the Games open.

Our good friends at McKiee & Farrar, Tri-County and R.E. Mann Brokers and 98.9 myFM got the ball rolling on day one. At one point all the equipment was in use around the make shift gym and a sense of pride took hold of everyone, from Mary and her staff to the participants… this was OUR games and it was all about raising funds for helping local kids get back in the game. Nothing could be better!

The days were long, but you know someone was always there working out, making sure something was going on. That first Sunday saw the North Shore Nation show off their strengths of running and cycling to the point of popping breakers, and even blowing up a treadmill when running legend, Charlie Upshall, was running a marathon on one.

That’s right the man completed a marathon on a treadmill… oh, that is commitment.

Scotiabank Simcoe did their part and left a huge check for $5,000.

Clark’s Pharmasave put in 400 miles their day at the store. The

Simcoe Special Olympics cheered on the women’s hockey team as they ran and biked. The applause could be heard all over the store.

The staff of HollisWealth, SportChek, Bachmann Law, The Personal Injury Group, Port Dover KIA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie, Homes on the Gold Coast, The Cider Keg and the Norfolk Hub brought week one to a close with over $9000 being raised at that point. It was simply incredible with a full week still to come.

Week two saw Simcoe Volkswagen, Roulston’s Pharmacy, Victoria Eldercare, Norfolk Fitness Centre, Demeyere Chrysler, Port Dover Health and Fitness Centre, KWIC Internet, The Strand Theatre, Norfolk Association for Community Living (NACL), and The Barrel Pizza and Spaghetti House, all stepping up to do their part to help Jumpstart; a true community coming together for others.

One of the highlights of week two were Canadian Tire Corporation catching wind of the event and sending down a video production crew to film the event and do interviews. It created quite the buzz around the store and in the community! Norfolk Fitness Centre did us all proud by having all kinds of fun classes for people to participate in. They brought the energy that day for sure. Thursday afternoon for myself was perhaps the biggest highlight… watching the women’s gold medal game. The folks from Demeyere Chrysler and Canadian Tire staff and myself were watching the game. I could feel my pace slowing on the bike when it looked bleak for the Canadians, but then we scored and everyone’s pace quickened.

Could we tie it up? There was the long shot off the post. Hearts are racing, we are all wondering if it’s over… then the goal. We are all tied up and going to overtime! Folks inside the store began gathering around the screen to watch the game with us. My daughter arrived and we all watched together. No one left the gym area and when it happened, hoots and hollers were heard throughout the store. It was a magical Canadian moment. That was when it hit me, all over our country, kids everywhere just felt the emotion of sports, the positive impact. They were all part of team Canada now.

Now more than ever, programs like Jumpstart will help that child follow his/her dream in any sport.

The inspirational seed has been planted and with programs like Jumpstart, they can take root. Now more than ever, the work Mary and her staff are doing and the support for Jumpstart is needed.

The second week was drawing to a close with $16,000 being raised.

I knew Jason, Mary and I were

feeling a little tired sometimes at night. One or two of us would hold down the fort to keep someone working out… sure we could have said the heck with it, but there was a sense of pride in what we had set out to do. Keeping Jumpstart the Games going was our Olympic flame and we were not going to let it burn out.

Finally Sunday arrived and Mary and her staff threw a party for all involved. It was the prefect way to cap off an extraordinary two weeks. As for what was raised, well in the end close to $30,000 came in.

For Mary it was an event she won’t soon forget, hearing the cheers throughout the store when a medal was won, to meeting so many great business leaders and wonderful organizations, to seeing local athletes of all ages help out, to the commitment from her staff, it was truly amazing.

Who knows where Jumpstart the Games goes from here. Perhaps Canadian Tire stores all across the country will be involved next time

and just like, ‘WE ALL PLAY FOR NORFOLK,’ perhaps we all really will, ‘ALL PLAY FOR CANADA!’ Thank you Mary, Jason, Wendy and staff for making this event a huge success and putting the children of Norfolk first!

We both thought it a good idea and I realized at the time that I really did not know that much on the day or its history, so off I went on a search to educate you and I. Here is what I found according to the website www.un.org/en/events/ womensday/history the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and the United Nations site.

International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and

International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women's full and equal participation.

International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

Chronology 1909 The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.

1910 The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

1911 As a result of the Copenhagen initiative, International Women's Day was marked for the first time

(19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded women's rights to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

1913-1914 International Women's Day also became a mechanism for protesting World War I. As part of the peace movement, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with other activists.

1917 Against the backdrop of the war, women in Russia again chose to protest and strike for "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Four days later, the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for

women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

By Dave Scott The Simcoe Special Olympics team has four athletes who are hard in training these days, preparing for the National Games this summer in Vancouver.

I caught up with three of the athletes a few weeks back at Jumpstart the Games at the Canadian Tire Simcoe, where they spent the day training.

Laura Waite has been involved in Special Olympics for 12 years. She participates in swimming, floor hockey, golf, basketball and bowling and has gone to local meets as well as Provincial and National Games.

At this year’s National Games, she will be competing in swimming, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 breast stroke and the 25 breast stroke. She is currently training three days a week in the pool, plus dry land training as well.

Laura says she is looking forward to meeting new people, seeing new places and

Olympic Athlete of the Year; one of the highest honours an athlete can be given.

As for this summer’s National Games, Jason says he is looking forward to the opening ceremonies with the lighting of the torch and cannot wait to go.

Junior Chaisson is our fourth athlete competing at the National Games and his sport is bowling as well. He tells us he is looking forward to the flight out, staying at the hotel and making new friends.

Junior has been bowling for the last five years and has won a number of medals in that time and he wanted to thank his coach, Cliff, for all his help.

Junior knows it will be a good time and cannot wait to go and hang out with his friends Amy, Jason, Amanda, Laura and Coach Shirley.

To all four of these wonderful athletes, Keep training hard, have fun and do your best in Vancouver. All of Norfolk is very proud of you!

working hard with her coaches. She hopes to bring home some medals and wants to bring home a flag from British Columbia. Laura would like to thank everyone who is helping her to get to the National Games.

Aimee Buckborough started with Special Olympic in 1998 with the bowling group, where she advanced to the provincial games in Peterborough, which was her first experience at the provincial level.

In 2009 Aimee joined the swim team where she began to compete at local meets and has been swimming ever since. Last year, Aimee competed at the Provincial Games in Kingston and came home with 2 gold, a silver and a bronze and that is where her journey to the Nationals began. She is very excited to be going and is looking forward to the trip, meeting new people and swimming her best.

Jason Gordy will be competing in 5 pin bowling at the Nationals in Vancouver. This highly decorated Special Olympic athlete has competed at all levels of meets in his 21 year carrier, participating in swimming, bowling, floor hockey, golf and baseball. In 2012 Jason was named Ontario Special

By Dr. Bruce Veltri D.C., C.P.C.A. My last Adventures in Eldercare article was about Winter Fire Safety in the home. I was surprised when I received a number of calls to my office after it was published. The surprising element was that the calls were not about what was in the article, they were about what was not included. People were calling to see how Rocky was doing because I had not mentioned him in the February article. I apologize. I was still very firmly in denial at that time and I honestly believed that Rocky was rallying and that he was going to somehow be OK. The human brain has a way of noticing the good (what you want to see) and ignoring the bad (what you are afraid to see). Unfortunately on February 18, Rocky’s final chapter was written. He was just over 14 years old and all his vital organs were still functioning well, and like most Golden’s his appetite never abated, he ate his kibble and had his treats every day. It was his hips, his arthritis was so bad that he could no longer get up and down. He could not walk without falling.

For one of those nights that it is hard to sleep, have a writing pad or scribbler to write down your thoughts; this can be a great way of getting ‘things’ out and ‘looking after yourself’.

Find time to get out and away for perhaps a club meeting, a game of golf or euchre.

Talk with a health care professional who understands the situation.

Have a confidant to talk with; this is a very helpful way to express feelings and thoughts.

Use community resources to support your care. Their help and suggestions can relieve the caregiver’s stress.

Find opportunities for meeting

There is a delusion that overtakes you when you love a being so much; you refuse to see what is right before you. I ran into Dr. Dave Horton at the Superstore one evening and he had read about Rocky in my articles and mentioned to me, that he had found in his many years of being a Veterinarian, the decision to Euthanize a family pet was one of the most painful decisions that people ever make. He had seen the anguish played over and over again. This is the same man who calmly helped me make the right decision over 25 years ago when I held my cat in my arms, scooped up from Highway 6 minutes before and I begged him to try to save her. At that time he simply said, ‘Bruce, it’s not right, it won’t help, she’s going to die.’ Fast forward to 2014 and my beloved Rocky was just as close to death and I refused to see the reality that was affronting me. Well Dr. Horton is a wise man and he was right again, making the appointment and then following through was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. My wife Susan and I held him. I felt his heart stop, his chest stopped heaving, and he was gone. I knew it was the right thing to do, at that moment I also knew that I had held on too long, that he had suffered at the end and I felt guilty for that. I put my needs over his.

That was wrong. But I truly believed he would somehow be OK. My emotions had taken control of my rational mind. I had constructed blinders.

Once Rocky was at peace, I knew it was the right decision. I had been trying to avoid the pain of losing him, but by doing that I was keeping him in pain. It was selfish, I was wrong.

The children of a dying parent often wear the same rose-coloured glasses that I have worn for the last six months. This situation plays out often in hospital with DNR orders (Do Not Resuscitate). A DNR order is put in place so that a dying person, as they are passing will not be given medical interventions to keep them alive.

The dying person, if cognizant welcomes the DNR order; the children will often balk at this, insisting that the dying parent be kept alive at any measure. This is the same self-centredness that I exhibited with Rocky, putting your emotional needs first when the right thing to do is try to see the situation as it really is and put the needs of the dying person first and foremost.

You might say a dying parent is not the same as

with other caregivers. Discussion with fellow caregivers can be so supportive and also reassuring.

Learn about the condition. This helps in understanding needs and behaviour and what the caregiver can do to help.

The caregiver is the person who lives with someone who needs help with their living activities; the caregiver has usually been female but now more males are helping with the care. The caregiver is also a relative. It is really important for the caregiver to find time for themselves and have activities that they enjoy.

Otherwise, the caring can become their only activity and in time they can have feelings of resentment, boredom and being unappreciated. Then, the caregiver can start to feel guilty!! It can be quite the circle!!!!

And when your loved one passes, you can be confident that you helped them in the transition with their needs being the priority, no matter how painful it is to you.

Although I won’t make any promises about how soon spring will actually arrive, I did see a Robin on the weekend, so that’s a good sign that it is finally on the way. And the annual Wildlife Festival is on this weekend at the Aud in Simcoe and that is another good indication that winter will soon be at an end. Come out to the show and find out about all the great ways to enjoy nature here in Norfolk.

Birding in Curaçao

I spent last week in a country, which, until last December, I don’t think I had ever heard of before.

Many visitors from North America mistakenly identify this bird as the Baltimore Oriole because of its bright orange and black colouring.

from the road. This bird usually nests in the tops of the candelabra cactus, making a large structure of twigs and branches, while the cacti thorns offer formidable protection from predators.

Another bird that is often seen on Curaçao is the Caribbean Flamingo, which is the national bird of the neighbouring island of Bonaire, where it is protected. At the moment, Bonaire is one of the only breeding sites for this bird in the Southern Caribbean. However, separated from Curaçao by only 50 kilometres of ocean, the Flamingos fly over from Bonaire to feed in the saltpans on the southwest coast of Curaçao. These Flamingos have extremely bright pink feathers because of their diet, which is rich in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments found in the algae and insects they eat.

Two other birds that were easily seen in Curaçao were the Bare-eyed Pigeon and the Bananaquit, both of which are as abundant as Rock Pigeons and House Sparrows are here in Norfolk. The Bananaquit, a small, friendly yellow, black and white bird, has a local name that translates into “sugar thief.” At the resort’s coffee shop I actually saw one of these birds pecking its way into a packet of sugar in a basket on the counter and the birds often approached diners in the open-air restaurant looking for hand-outs.

The Bare-eyed Pigeon is a larger version of our Mourning Dove, but with a large blue and black bare skin patch around its eye, giving it the look of a loser in a prize fight.

Although a small country, Curaçao offered me lots of opportunities for enjoying nature and is well worth a return visit.

The Venezuela Troupial is larger than the Baltimore Oriole, for which many North American visitors often mistake this bird. is the middle country of the ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) islands located less than 100 kilometres north of Venezuela. Separated by a deep ocean trench from South America, the island is close to a very busy shipping lane and offered endless hours of interesting ship watching from the beach.

Comprised of just 444 square kilometres, the north and south ends of the island are located only 60 kilometres from each other and the width of the island varies from five to ten kilometres. Despite its small size, the country boasts two national parks: Christoffel National Park and Shete Boka National Park.

The two parks cover an area of approximately 2,200 hectares or about 20 per cent of the country.

Although there are only 221 species of birds on the island, many of which are visitors from either North or South America, I managed to see approximately 20 per cent of them while I was in Curaçao. One

Their call is a melodious yodeling song delivered from a high vantage point such as a roof- or treetop or from the top of a candelabra cactus, many of which grow to heights of six or more metres. This bird is seen throughout the island and has easily adapted to human habitation and readily visits gardens where it feeds on fruits and insects.

The above-mentioned cacti also offered a perch for a flock of Crested Caracaras that I saw in Christoffel Park. I had seen this bird previously in both Cuba and Costa Rica, but always alone and from a distance. This time, I think we counted 12 of them in one spot.

Knowing this bird feeds mainly on carrion, we finally got out of the car to see what was attracting them to the spot. What we found was a dead goat just a few metres
