Letter To The Editor We wanted to share the good news with the local public, that we achieved our goal of raising $10,000 for breast cancer research.

This was through the generosity of those who purchased our recipe book “Legacy of Love” in the past eighteen months. Our final cheque was presented November 8th and brought our total to $10,026.11, as shown in the attached photograph.

The Juravinski Hospital Foundation in Hamilton will soon begin to build and equip the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre. The centre will handle more than 10,000 patient visits per year, offering services to women with breast abnormalities detected during screening. Patients referred to the centre will be assessed by experts in surgery, radiology and pathology all in one day, operating out of one centre and acting as one team.

This is certainly good news to people in this region and we are pleased to add our contribution to this cause, which has surpassed our greatest expectations.

It may be too late for this season but is even more fun ‘to shop’ all year, then there are gardening and other ideas.

Answers 1. False. In later life, the quality of sleep may decline, but not the total sleep time. As people age, they are likely to take more naps rather than sleep for long stretches.

3. False. A person's personality stays the same throughout life, except when changes result from Alzheimer disease or other forms of dementia, stroke or other serious illness.

O

nce again the Christmas season is coming up quickly and that often means that we will be travelling to visit our family, friends and other loved ones. I wanted to provide a review of the best things to do when you are planning to travel and have medical equipment/needs.

Travelling with your CPAP: If you are planning on going somewhere and will be travelling by car, taking your CPAP with you doesn’t require too much preparation. If you are travelling within Canada you will want to pack your CPAP in its carry bag and possibly bring a spare bottle of distilled water with you. You can often purchase distilled water when you get to your destination if you do not wish to bring it with you. If you are travelling by car but crossing the border you may want to bring a couple other things with you. I recommended that once you pack up your CPAP for travelling, if you are crossing the border you bring a copy of your prescription as well a copy of your invoice to prove where you purchased it.

When travelling with your CPAP you want to make sure you pack up your CPAP and mask in its carry case and take it as a carry-on baggage. Medical equipment is usually allowed as an extra carry on, by most airlines, but it is also a good idea to phone ahead and confirm with the airline.

When flying, I always recommend that you take a copy of your prescription and invoice with you, this just shows the equipment is required medical equipment and that it is in fact yours. Remember, if you do not take your CPAP as a carry on and you do put it in checked baggage, if it is damaged it will likely not be covered under manufacturer’s warranties.

Travelling with Home Oxygen: When visiting family during the day (not staying overnight) taking your portable oxygen system will suffice for this (whether it is cylinders/tanks or a portable oxygen concentrator). If you are planning to go away to visit family, where you are going to spend the night or multiple nights, you will want to plan ahead a little bit. The best plan for this is to take your stationary system with you, this will allow you to have continuous flow and be able to move around the house you are visiting freely. It is also ideal to use a stationary system when sleeping and for longer periods of time. If you are going to take a trip by flight, you will need to notify your airline, as well, you will need to provide the airline with some medical information and your oxygen provider must be aware to ensure you have proper equipment, approved by the FAA. Every airline has different paperwork requirements for people travelling with oxygen, so when you are booking the flight you need to notify the airline in order to ensure everything is in line. If you have any questions about this, it is best to call and double check with your provider.

By MARG WERDEN Manitoba maples and horses: a deadly combination!

While most knowledgeable horticulturists think twice before planting a Manitoba maple (Acer negundo), this species is a common tree in southern Ontario. In addition to its weak wood that tends to come crashing down during windstorms, its irregular form, and its prolific seeding habits, a darker side to this tree has recently been uncovered.

A veterinarian I know was called out in the middle of the night a few weeks ago to treat a sick horse.

Unable to find any obvious causes for the horse’s illness, he did some research on the internet. Although the test results have not yet been returned, he believes the horse may have been suffering from Seasonal Pasture Myopathy (SPM).

Until last year, the cause of this illness, which is fatal in over 90 per cent of cases, was unknown.

Symptoms include stiffness, difficulty walking or standing, voiding dark urine, and eventually breathing rapidly and becoming recumbent before death.

Minnesota have recently identified the cause of SPM: a toxin in the keys of the Manitoba maple tree.

Seasonal Pasture Myopathy has most commonly been seen in the fall and in horses that were pastured for over twelve hours daily in a pasture with short grass. Often the disease occurred after heavy wind and rain in the preceding week.

Young horses or horses new to a pasture were more often affected than older horses. Researchers have isolated a toxin in the seeds of the Manitoba maple, also known as box elder, making the presence of this species near a pasture the key risk factor. Ingestion of enough maple keys results in a breakdown of the horse’s muscles and, almost always, death.

However, not all horses exposed to the seeds were affected, something that researchers are still trying to solve.

Possible explanations include the length of time the horse is exposed to the seeds, the toxin level in the seeds, how many seeds blow into the pasture, and whether the horses had supplemental feed such as hay available to them to make eating the seeds less attractive.

Found naturally in most of North America, the Manitoba maple is named for being the largest maple native to the Prairies. In the grasslands of Manitoba and

Saskatchewan it grows mostly along the banks of lakes, streams and rivers. Although there are small native stands in Ontario, its common occurrence in this part of the country has come about as a result of planting and becoming naturalized.

Because the Manitoba maple is often characterized as a dirty or garbage tree because it sheds and suckers, has weak multiple stems, has an irregular crown form, is prone to wind and ice damage, and is short-lived, it is not a popular tree. As well, its prolific seeding habit sometimes makes it a weed and in some places where it has been introduced, it is considered to be an invasive species. In addition, the wood of the tree is not particularly useful for lumber and is used most often to make fibreboard.

However, there are some saving graces to the tree if it is properly pruned in the first few years. It is a fast-growing tree that provides shade and a windbreak. It also thrives on many kinds of soil, is hardy and tolerates heat and cold as well as flooding and drought.

It is, however, as the research has recently shown, not a tree to plant near horse pastures! As my veterinarian friend discovered, there is no cure at this time for Seasonal Pasture Myopathy and

the horse he was treating did not survive.

Christmas Crafts from Nature workshop

Nature’s Calling Environmental Education is hosting a workshop for children aged six to twelve to make natural Christmas crafts. The event will let your child’s creative side shine through as they make various nature-inspired crafts.

The workshop takes place on Saturday, December 7 from 1 to 4 pm at the St. Williams Forestry Interpretive Centre, just west of the corner of Highway 24 and Forestry Farm Road. The registration fee is $10 per child and includes craft materials, a cookie and hot chocolate. Time will be spent outdoors searching for natural materials to make the crafts, so be sure to dress for the weather.
