& District Foundation Donation at NGH R adiothon

By Dave Scott I was listening to 98.9 myFM last Wednesday morning, when I heard a couple of familiar voices chatting on the radio. It was the annual Radiothon for Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) and the two men making a donation were Tom Haskett and Gary Cooper on behalf of the Vittoria & District Foundation. They were presenting a cheque for $5000. I quickly headed for the hospital to grab a photo of them for the paper.

As I drove up, I wondered how long the Vittoria & District Foundation had been helping out the hospital. It seems every year they show up and make a sizable donation.

I caught up with Tom and Gary just as they were getting ready to leave and found out that they have been making a donation every year, for the past seventeen years. They have donated well over $125,000! The foundation realizes the importance of the hospital in our community.

Tom and Gary made it very clear that they will continue to support NGH. Well I figured I best grab a photo of the two of them with Julie Powell (Director of Development for the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation). Of course folks walking by were commenting about the rose between two thorns. Tom and Gary took it all in stride having some fun as well.

You know the Vittoria & District Foundation sets a great example in our community. They

may not be the biggest foundation, but what they do have, is a sense of who they are, how they got there, and how they can help. Whenever Tom and Gary show up, you can always count on a little fun and a helping hand!

Williams Conservation R eserve Community Council

By Jean Mottashed To some people, trees are just trees, but to the small group of volunteers who make up the St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council (SWCRCC), these trees represent a rare, sensitive habitat for plant, animal, bird and insect species -- one that requires delicate management of both the landscape and the people who use it.

The St. Williams Conservation Reserve is located on Crown land and comprised of over 1,000 hectares of Carolinian forest divided into two tracts -- one surrounding the St. Williams Nursery Centre and one near Turkey Point. These hidden gems are home to over twenty endangered species and feature a spectacular network of trails for human use, winding through oak savannah, sand dunes, ravines and streams.

Council treasurer, John deWitt, says not only does the council manage the forest on a sustainable basis, but it works to make the land accessible to the public, "in a responsible, sustainable manner."

Many different user groups enjoy the trails, including mountain bikers, equestrians, hunters, bird watchers, naturalists and trail walkers, so balancing their interests with the preservation of this unique landscape and its at risk species is one of the council's most important goals.

This little known council has been working diligently for the past several years, but has just incorporated last year. It operates in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and

to host financial abuse prevention seminar series for seniors The Alzheimer Society of Haldimand-Norfolk, through the Haldimand Abilities Centre and in partnership with the HaldimandNorfolk Community Response Network and the Dementia Network of Haldimand-Norfolk, is doing its part to help area seniors protect themselves from financial abuse and exploitation.

Four seminars featuring lawyers, representatives from the OPP, and financial professionals will be held throughout Haldimand and Norfolk County, and will offer tips and strategies to avoid scams, protect assets, and inform seniors about their rights. The hope is that non-seniors will attend the information sessions with their elderly parents and grandparents and learn how to work together to protect their loved ones.

The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ONPEA) reports that approximately

90% of all abuse cases it provides support and resources for are financial. These cases include online, telephone, and door-to-door scams and, unfortunately, family members that take advantage of isolated, naive, or conciliatory parents and grandparents. In 2013, Norfolk County seniors have been bilked out of more than one million dollars in scams, and those are just the reported cases.

ONPEA reports that many seniors do not come forward due to embarrassment, fear, or because they feel like they are betraying a family member if they do.

The information sessions are October 30 at Grandview Lodge in Dunnville; November 5 at the Erie Beach Hotel in Port Dover; November 6 at the Delhi Friendship Centre; and November 28 at the Haldimand Abilities Centre in Hagersville.

Palm Warbler

By George Pond It was an early May morning and I had been hoping to get some good photos of migrating birds in the Long Point Provincial Park. However birding was very slow.

As there had been little or no migration during the night, I decided to look for ducks and other water birds in the marsh west of the causeway. I was standing on the dyke, slightly higher than a Palm Warbler that was hawking for insects in the still brown cattails of winter past. The bird seemed unaware of my presence and I got many good shots as it moved from one cattail to another in search of food.

Vic Gibbons chose this interesting pose to paint. I would probably have chosen a different pose but when I look at the finished canvas, I have to agree with his decision. Rather than cattails he has placed my bird in a stand of Pussy Willows with the early morning sun just starting to clear away the low-hanging fog.

The original of this painting, which I like very much, hangs on our Family Room wall.

Palm Warblers do not nest in Norfolk but much further north in the coniferous forests and boreal bogs. They are a common early migrant passing through Norfolk in late April and early May. Long Point is a good place to look for them at that time.

They continually wag their tail as they forage for food.

Palm Warblers winter in southeastern United States and during the winter months they are abundant and easy to find in places like Florida.

13 years we have raised $80,892 in total.

eb Madill, a member of the Simcoe Caring Cupboard Board of Directors, received a $1,386 Rotary Club of Simcoe donation from Rotarian, Susan Crawford. These funds are part of the amounts raised across Norfolk County by its three Rotary Clubs, (Delhi, Norfolk Sunrise and Simcoe), during their annual friendly “Food Fight” Fund Drive with the seven Lions Clubs in the County. Each of Norfolk’s Community Food Banks are receiving a Rotary cheque this month as funds collected earlier during the “Food Fight” are disbursed. Large amounts of food were also collected and delivered to all the county Food Banks

by Rotarians and Lions Clubs, earlier this year.

Ms. Madill welcomed this funding as most useful for reequipping and provisioning the Caring Cupboard Food Bank, since its re-location to new premises on Kent Street, Simcoe. Ms. Madill remarked, “These funds are going to really make a difference this year, both for Thanksgiving and the holiday season for our growing numbers of clients looking forward to this service.” Susan Crawford, who led the Food Fight drive at the Rotary Club of Simcoe, commented, “We hope this act of Rotary ‘Service Above Self’ will encourage others in all parts of Norfolk to give their generous support to the valuable work the Caring Cupboard and all our food banks are doing. They all welcome help to aid so many people really depending upon this service now.”

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers with Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, there is a now a comprehensive guide to the hiking trails and paddling routes in the Long Point watershed. Take a Hike! Is a 30-page booklet that provides maps and descriptions of twelve nature trails and four paddling routes in the sections of Elgin, Oxford, Brant and Haldimand Counties that are included in the watershed.

The Long Point watershed includes numerous creeks and streams that flow into Big Creek Marsh, the Inner Bay of Long Point and Lake Erie, wetlands that are rich in plant and animal life, and forests that are home to more than 70 native species of trees and more than half of all the species of birds that breed in Canada.

With this diversity of nature, is it small wonder that people come from miles away to enjoy our four provincial parks, National Wildlife Area, UNESCO biosphere reserve,

Take a Hike! provides a number of fun activities for families to enjoy while on a hike or paddle. Among the many activities in the guide, which are designed to help participants discover the biodiversity that is to be found in this area, are a nature bingo, a scavenger hunt, games for each season, and information on how to determine a tree’s height and age.

Information on the trails includes trailhead co-ordinates in both the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system and latitude and longitude, directions to the trail, length of the trail, and features of the trail. Paddling route information includes the same information as well as access and finishing points.

Take a Hike! is available in PDF format on Nature’s Calling website at www.naturescalling.ca. Hard copies are available by emailing info@naturescalling.ca. In addition, copies will be distributed at various Nature’s Calling activities over the next few months including the Wildlife Festival in March.

Time to feed the birds

The raucous call of the Blue Jays always screams “autumn is here and winter is on its way” to me and hearing one on my deck seemingly

complaining about the lack of seeds available last week had me scrambling to buy seeds and fill the feeders over the weekend.

Unfortunately, the first filling of the feeders is always a big job because I usually take the feeders apart and clean them thoroughly – something I should do before I put them away in the spring, but never seem to have the time to do.

Just as we like to eat from clean dishes and in clean surroundings, birds prefer clean feeders with fresh, clean seed in them. I usually also clean our feeders a couple of times during the winter to make sure they remain safe for the birds since dirty bird feeders can harbour bacteria, mould and other diseases that can adversely affect bird populations. Infected birds can spread diseases to each other and to other backyard feeders, creating epidemic conditions if left unchecked.

It is recommended that feeders be cleaned at least once a month or more often if they are well used.

Disinfecting them with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts hot water will help combat the spread of any diseases such as conjunctivitis, which affects the eyes of finches.

The entire feeders should be cleaned including any part on which the birds may perch to make sure that any feces that have collected

there are removed. Wearing rubber gloves is recommended to avoid contamination to oneself. After cleaning, all parts of the feeder should be rinsed well to remove any chemical residue. Once clean, make sure the feeders are completely dry before filling them to avoid the formation of mould and mildew.

I would like to recommend to feeder manufacturers that ease of cleaning should be a top priority in the design of bird feeders, but so far I’ve found few that are both functional and really simple to take apart to clean thoroughly! I’m still looking.
