By Dave Scott For all the amazing accomplishments that Karen Matthews has done at the Norfolk County Fair over the years… her energy, vitality, charisma, smarts, savvy business sense… I have to tell you there is one thing she should never do in public… sing I went to chat with Karen last week about one of the upcoming concerts at the fair this year, that being, the show on Tuesday evening called Sail Rock, which features the who’s who of incredible musicians from the 70’s. This is no tribute band but the original musicians themselves, Christopher Cross, Gary Wright, Orleans, Player and John Ford Coley. As I sat down and mentioned Christopher Cross’s name, Karen attempted to break into song, ‘Sailing takes me away…’

Oh boy, she kept going, darn it, she knows all the words, I am going to be here a while. I tried to keep a straight face, I mean it was nice to be serenaded and all… I broke in and asked about Orleans. She starts up again with another 70’s hit, ‘You’re still the one…’ and I see Player is on the ticket as well, ‘Baby Come Back …’ She stops and mentions how she hopes to get up on stage and sing along with all these musicians she grew up listening to.

All the music is from my childhood too and I swear I will buy a ticket and come see the show! One thing is for sure, if you are of the 70’s generation this is going to be ninety minutes of hits that you grew up listening to. They are all classic in their own right. The music will instantly take you back to your youth and the fun you had. The show itself kicks off at 8 pm (early enough for some of us old farts to be in by 10 or 11… can’t beat that!) and is free with paid admission to the grounds or there are Track Seats available for just $25 to get up close and personal.

Karen sings on and I can hear some of the fair staff giggling. Wendy Brick has joined us in Karen’s office and I think she is trying to escape. I quickly turn my question towards Wendy hoping to give my ears a rest, but it is too late. Karen attempts Gary Weaver’s huge hit, ‘Dream Weaver…’ Slowly I turn the conversation to Wendy who tells me about another great new show at the fair this year, which will

occur every day except Tuesday at the Grandstand at noon. The Tom Bishop Wild West Show, will feature an assortment of western theme entertainment such as horses, trick riding, roping and more, which all and all, will make for great family entertainment.

Back to the 70’s moment with Karen, who had given her vocal chords a rest for the time being.

Her passion and excitement for the music she has attempted to sing proves to me that this is a show she is very proud of. She mentioned that she herself hand picked the bands

to perform and that she wants to share the experience with all of the folks of Norfolk.

I have got to tell you that it was a hoot doing the musically induced interview with Karen! She has more than proved how excited she is about Sail Rock coming to this year’s Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show and hopes that all of us will join her for such a wonderful event.

By Jean Mottashed At last week's Friday the 13th motorcycle rally, Mat and Gail Stork, of Sebring, Florida attracted a bit of attention when people noticed the plate on their bike.

"You came all that way up here to Port Dover?", Mat says one fellow biker asked him. "Yes sir, I did," Mat responded with a big grin. And that was the beginning of just one of the jovial conversations Mat and Gail had with other bikers on Port Dover's main drag during the 55th celebration of this unique festival.

Mat, 73, and Gail, 70, are a couple of "keenagers" who have toured all lower 48 states plus two Canadian provinces in their twenty years of biking. And Mat has a patch on the back of his leather jacket to prove it.

But what this energetic senior couple have really proven, is that you're never to old to have fun at anything.

"As long as I can throw my leg over the saddle, I'll be riding," Mat said with a laugh. "No one told us we were supposed to grow up!"

So far, they've been to biker rallies in Indiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois and Florida, including the 90th birthday party of Harley Davidson in Milwaukee, but Port Dover's is

the first rally they have attended in Canada. "It was unbelievable," Mat enthused. "We were flabbergasted. So many bikes and people in a small town for only one day."

"The people were so friendly, and it was really interesting to see the different motorcycles and unique trailers," Gail chimed in. "But I nearly froze in that Canadian wind!"

Like all bikers, they love the feeling of freedom they experience on their 1993 Harley Davidson touring bike.

"There's nothing like it," Mat said, and Gail added, "It's a great stress reliever -- just me, the motorcycle and Mother Nature. You never see anything the same from a motorcycle as you do from a car. Windy, twisty roads are marvellous. You smell the pines and notice the wildlife."

Nowadays, Mat and Gail trailer their bike long distances, and then enjoy shorter cruises around the back roads of rural locales. Next year, they plan on touring the Cabot Trail through Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and perhaps Prince Edward Island as well.

And what was their take on riding Canada's highways and byways? "It's so pretty, the scenery is beautiful," Gail said with a sparkle in her eye.

"We'd come back in a minute!"

By Dave Scott I took a tour of the new BachmannLAW, The Personal Injury Group building on Highway #3, East last week. I was able to get to know Corina Bachmann a few years ago when I did a story on her, and I have tried to keep track of what she was up to ever since.

I have got to tell you, she has been busy and the new office is awesome.

Corina designed the concept herself and left the project in the capable hands of office manger, Christine Zammit.

The lobby itself has an abundance of natural light, providing clients and staff with a warm welcoming feeling as you enter. The smile the receptionist gave me when I asked how she liked the new building was more than enough indication that this was where she wanted to be.

Corina Bachmann of BachmannLAW, The Personal Injury Group The skylight in the lobby was so bright that there was no need for lights to be on. I looked around and my first impression was, WOW this is nice!

Soon Christine arrived and took me on a tour, providing insight into how and why certain aspects of the building were put in place. We peaked in offices, checked out the work area behind the lobby, and then headed down the hall to the back of the building, to the room referred to as the library. It was a perfect meeting room with shelves of books, plenty of natural light and a very relaxed feeling to it.

Corina returned from court and met us in the library. As she settled into a chair, it was as if a weight was lifted from her and she explained why this was one of her favourite rooms in the facility. For Corina, educating folks is a must and the library in the Bachmann facility can provide that opportunity.

As we sat and chatted, it was obvious just how much this room means to Corina. Our conversation was as open and flowing as the room itself.

Next up was a very spacious boardroom, followed by personal office space for each of the seven staff members (and that is just the main floor). There was a full size basement with additional office space, a kitchen and its own boardroom as well. Of course there was wheel chair accessibility.

The project itself took over two years to complete and Corina could not be happier with the end result.

It is all she hoped it would be.

Christine said that the staff loves it! They each picked their own office and everything fell into place.

The tour came to a close and I had to be going. Corina and Christine raved about the contractors and the work they had done and wanted to remind folks to watch for their open house, which will be coming in October.

I can understood why the new home for the BachmannLAW, The Personal Injury Group is so important to Corina, it is more than just the bricks and mortar, it is about the staff and the clients who come in, about who they are. It offers peace of mind and hope.

By Dave Scott As an athlete you always want to be challenged… to do the next big thing in your quest to reach new heights. It could be as simple as starting out running that first kilometre. You accomplish it, and the next thing you know, you are training for a 5 km run. Now, not all folks have that need to go beyond their original goal, but then there is the other athlete who keeps pushing, keeps taking it to the next level, the person who doesn’t accept limits. These folks do not have an off button.

I guess I met Scot Brockbank four years ago, at first I didn’t think we had much in common.

He ran… I used to… and at the time, I had no interest starting again. Anyway, at some point he needed a kayaker to help assist swimmers from Pottahawk to Turkey Point so I gathered a few paddling buddies and we helped out. I was impressed with Scot’s drive to accomplish the

swim and his taste for endurance athletics... that was something that intrigued me. It wasn’t long before I began swimming and running with the north shore group and I began to understand Scot a bit better. He was building something (and I am not even sure he knew what it was), not just in the business sense, but also in the relationship phase within the run, swim and cycling groups.

There was a very strong bond between folks who seemed to understand themselves and the community at large.

Well his business continued to grow, as did our friendship… long cold runs in the middle of January, at least 20 km followed by an hour swim was the norm for us. For me it was getting back to doing the sports I had always enjoyed and I knew that was something I needed to do. As the kilometres piled up, so did our conversations, and I realized Scot truly wanted others to benefit from being fit… and if he sold a few pair of shoes along the way to pay the bills, that was okay. I watched as race after race the north shore nation grew and folks hung out at the store. Scot continued to teach and train. He has always been one to help his fellow runners

first. I commented a few times that maybe Scot should run a race for himself and throw down, as we say!

Well, I am happy to report that Scot finally threw down for Scot. Earlier this year, he competed in an Olympic distance triathlon, 1.5 km swim follow by a 40 km bike ride and then to top it off, a 10 km run. To say the least, it was not easy and without proper training you could get yourself in some serious trouble. Scot and his training partner, Nancy, put in their time over the winter, swimming five to six times a week,

e all have routines, ‘regular times and ways of doing things.’ They have

been a part of our lifestyle and everyday activities since we came into this world! They help make us feel comfortable and are a useful part of our social settings. These settings include our feeding times as infants, our nap times as toddlers and our daily school activities at all levels of our education. Reflect for a moment how grown up we felt when we knew what to do in certain settings and felt so proud that we did not have to be told!!!

Then as seniors these routines give us direction, confidence and help reassure us that ‘we didn’t miss anything!!’

Now in our senior lifestyles, routines are very much a part of our activities, however there is one big difference. There are fewer interruptions in our routines and

so they can become quite rigid and inflexible. They can become habits with which we are very comfortable and not at all willing to change or even modify; this is what is also known as set in our ways.

This attitude is not at all open to new ideas, ways of doing things or changing any part of a routine.

Another example of the inflexible part of a routine is when there is an event or happening that you asked to attend or be a participant in and it would interrupt your routine and you have to think about it!!! This is a sure sign that the routine is ‘out of order’ and needs to be really looked at!! Every senior has had this experience and ‘slipped into routines’ that need to be looked at!!

Lighten up and smile - most routines can be altered!!

know that the age of most of my loyal readers is well past the point that they would be looking for a career change or a new job opportunity so this month's column is dedicated more to the children and grandchildren that are either full time or part time care-givers. Almost 80 percent of care-giving is performed by a close family member, a spouse or a child and for that reason it is generally unpaid.

The work of care-giving for a family member may be unpaid work but for many it is very rewarding. The type of people that thrive at care-giving are generous, well organized and have strong altruistic traits (altruistic is a big word that simply means you want to help). Many care-givers work for years with the same family member and are then quite lost when that family member either passes away or goes into a longterm care facility.

If you are one of the care-givers that I am describing above then you might be interested in becoming a Personal Support Worker (PSW) and be able to continue caring for people and earn a living while helping older seniors.

PSW's assist elderly client with the activities of daily living. Every care-giving opportunity is different, every person has different needs.

Some examples of the tasks that PSW's perform are assistance with meal preparation, bathing, toileting, light house-keeping and general household organization. The main goal is to keep our older seniors healthy and safe within their own home or apartment.

The demand for Personal Support Workers is very high and growing. The reason for this is the growing senior population in Canada. Not only are there more and more seniors every day but they are also living longer. Combine this with the fact that there are fewer and fewer beds available in long term care facilities (nursing homes). This is a one-two punch that is causing the demand for PSW's to increase and the conditions are not likely to change for at least 10 to 15 years. The demand will continue to be strong for a very long time!

You can become certified as a Personal Support Worker by taking a one year course at community college. The James N. Allen Campus of Fanshawe College in Simcoe has a terrific PSW program. You have to have a high school diploma or equivalent to apply. There is also Mohawk College in Brantford. The private colleges also have PSW programs, Medix College in Brantford offers a 6 month program with entry dates twice a year. There is also Everest College in Hamilton and Westervelt College in London. I anticipate in the future even more schools will start programs to train PSW's as the demand is so high.

Once a PSW graduates they have opportunities to work for a company like Victoria Eldercare and help people to stay safely in their own home, there is opportunity to work in retirement homes and nursing homes and even opportunities in the public sector working for hospitals and community groups.

I understand that this information will not apply to most of my readers so please share this column with your daughters and grand children and encourage them to consider Personal Support Worker as a career choice.

am asked often about when and why to replace your CPAP mask or other supplies. One of the biggest reasons is that as your mask wears, the seal will also wear,

doesn’t seal as well, then you are not getting the full benefit of your CPAP machine, as well this often leads to over-tightening your mask causing discomfort. The other primary reason why you should replace your mask and/or seal is that after 6-12 months, no matter what you clean your mask with, the bacteria does not completely come off. The bacteria growth will continue the older your mask is. A good guide to replacing your mask and/or seal would be every 6-12 months or by asking yourself any of the following questions. If you answer yes to any of these, it’s good idea to replace.

cycling indoors and hitting the snowy roads for runs. All of that training paid off as Scot finished 6th in his age group at Muskoka 5150 Triathlon.

Scot was very happy, as was Nancy with the accomplishment. Not long afterwards Scot received word that he had qualified for the HyVee Triathlon 5150 U.S. Championship Elite Cup in Des Moines, Iowa. He thought for sure someone was playing a joke on him and went online to find out that it was legit. He called Nancy to see what she thought about going. Nancy said, “Hell yes, we’re going!” So it was set, Scot would compete in the elite division (just below pro) and Nancy in the recreation division.

They arrived in Iowa the Friday before the event. It was hot temperatures, reaching 106 degrees Fahrenheit, not exactly Port Dover weather. The two went for a swim and the lake was 85 degrees Fahrenheit, hmm, this was not Lake Erie.

Sunday finally arrived and after a 45 minute delay due to a thunder storm, the race got going.

Scot says he had a great swim, realizing that yes he does belong with these elite athletes. The doubt and worry he had about being good enough left his mind as he passed other swimmers, finding his rhythm, he finished the 1.5 km swim in 27 minutes.

He laughed and his eyes got big when he said, “Coming out of the water was like walking into a furnace.”

He finished in the transition area and hit the road on his bike, with a hot wind in his face tackling hills that rolled on. The route was, out to the airport and back. Scot thought to himself, “There will be relief when I turn around to come back.” But no, the heat just laid thick in the air on the way back. He knew it was imperative to keep his fluid level up. Riders were passing him and he was pounding hard at 32 km/hr, he figures some of the riders were hitting 40 km/hr… amazing in that heat. Scot realized he was competing with some hard-core, top-notch athletes. He admits that he had a moment’s thought, “What am I doing out here?” But he kept rolling along with the heat bouncing off the road all around him. When he was finally done cycling, he unclipped from his pedals and started his last transition to the run.

Instantly his body was engulfed in sweat as the heat caught up with him. He had just 10 km left to run. All along the course, there were water bottles and towels lying in ice for the runners to cool themselves with. Water sprinklers showered the runners to cool them off as well.

Scot realized this would be a very difficult run but he didn’t shy away. His determination (ego) would not let him stop and he pushed through the 103 degree temperatures, again he could feel the sun beating down on the open course, the pavement pushing the punishing heat up. At last the end was in sight and there beyond the finish line was a kiddy pool full of ice and water. Scot crossed the finish line and slipped into one of the pools to sooth his overheating body. He admitted that while he was sitting there, he felt a little

disappointment with his finish, but then it hit him that it was an incredible experience. He had just competed with some of the top athletes in North America and he held his own. Overall he was 42 in his age group (not bad for all of North America, I’d say).

In only his second year of triathlons he climbed his way to the elite level.

I have to tell you that when Scot and I had the chat about the race, it was great to see the excitement he had for his amazing accomplishment. For years I have watched as he felt joy for those around him reaching their goals… and this time it was his turn.

You know Scot, by achieving your goal you just may have inspired a few more folks to get out there and strive to be the best they can be.

As I travel across Canada, I am visiting a number of our wonderful national and provincial parks and I am so thankful that previous governments cared enough about our environment and our beautiful natural places to preserve and protect them for future generations.

Without the legislation that was put into place a century ago, most of these places would have been lost to us and would be nothing more than a memory.

I went to a presentation about national parks at Waterton Lakes National Park in southwestern Alberta and learned a great deal about the history of the 42 national parks and park reserves we have in Canada as well as a bit about national parks elsewhere in the world. Our first national park, Banff National Park in Alberta, came into existence in November 1885, when 26 square kilometres of land were set aside for protection. This land officially became a national park in 1887 with the enactment of the Rocky Mountain Park Act. Not long afterwards, other large tracts of land in western Canada were set aside for protection and Yoho, Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks came into existence.

The first national park in eastern Canada, Thousand Islands National Park, was established in 1904.

Grasslands National Park

The first National Park I visited on this road trip was Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan. This vast area of

Black bears are a relatively common site in many national parks. At this time of year, they are busy storing up fat for the winter by eating thousands of berries each day. mixed-grass prairie, undisturbed by agriculture, is unique in Canada.

Less than one quarter of Canada’s original mixed-grass prairie remains in its natural state. Most of this is scattered in isolated and small pieces amidst farmland.

Grasslands National Park is one of the largest and least disturbed of the remaining pockets of native prairie.

This is a habitat that is very fragile and if broken by the plough, takes many years and a nearby seed source for the native plants to return. As happened in the dustbowl days of the 1930s, if the protective grass, moss and lichen ground cover is removed, the fertile soil is soon blown away by the strong prairie wind Grasslands National Park is home to several endangered species, including bison, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope. This is the only place left in Canada where prairie dogs still exist in the wild and they have a widespread colony located here. The colony is a key component of the Grasslands ecosystem.

It provides food and homes for animals and opens the habitat for plants. Burrowing owls nest in abandoned burrows; rattlesnakes seek food and shade in the burrows; black-widow spiders set traps at the entrances; intensive grazing by the prairie dogs increases flowering plants, a favourite food of the pronghorn antelope and jack rabbits; and black-footed ferrets depend on prairie dogs as a primary food source, as do coyotes and badgers.

Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park Located in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta, Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is a highland plateau amidst the plains. The Cypress Hills stand out in stark contrast to the surrounding land, protecting their valleys from winds and drought. The vast flattopped plateau was formed millions of years ago, and although the

edges have been worn away over time, it has been preserved because it is a drainage divide. The hills separated river systems, directing them either north or south of the hills, thus minimizing the effects of erosion on this area.

Much of the plateau consists of fescue prairie, an increasingly rare native plant community found in the prairie ecosystem, one of the most altered ecological areas in Canada. Agriculture, urbanization and human settlement have changed this habitat forever and only isolated patches of fescue grassland still exist.

Like an oasis in the desert, the Cypress Hills provide a welcome relief from the surrounding dry prairies to a large number of species that visit the wetlands found among the hills. Numerous duck species nest and feed in the wetlands and other animals such as mule deer, pronghorn antelope and fox rely on the wetlands for water.

Waterton Lakes National Park

Waterton Lakes National Park literally sits on the Canada-USA border and forms part of a much larger protected area that also includes the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and Glacier National Park in the USA. A boat tour on Upper Waterton Lake takes passengers across the border to the Goat Haunt port-of-entry to the US, probably one of the smallest border crossings along the CanadaUS border.

Waterton Lakes National Park is tucked away in the far southwest corner of Alberta and encompasses 505 square kilometres (195 square miles) of beautiful lake, canyon and mountain scenery. Numerous hikes lead tourists to magnificent viewpoints throughout the park.

One such hike, the Bear’s Hump, is a short, but strenuous climb for just over a kilometre, but with an elevation gain of 225 metres (738 feet). The effort, however, is worthwhile as the panoramic

view of the Waterton townsite and the Waterton lakes and valley are stunning.

The mule deer that live near the townsite have become somewhat accustomed to human presence and even bedded down for the night in one of the campsites in the campground when I was there.

Black bears were also easy to spot on the road to Red Rock Canyon, busily gorging themselves on berries to store up fat for the winter. A tour guide told us that a black bear will eat approximately 100,000 berries a day, the equivalent calories of about 40 Big Macs! Small wonder they can last until next spring before needing to eat again.

The slogan for Waterton Lakes National Park is “where the mountains meet the prairies” and that fairly well describes the park. One minute you are on the open prairie and the next you are in the mountains with no foothills in between. There are 45 different habitat types found in the park, which create a unique area of abundant and diverse plants and animals, including more than 1,000 native plants, 250 species of birds, more then 60 species of mammals, 24 species of fish and 10 species of reptiles.

As with each park I have visited so far, there was once again too much to see and do and too little time. I constantly feel that I am just nibbling at the edges of what each has to offer.
