By Dave Scott One of the fun parts of being a parent is teaching our children to ride a bike. It seems to be a right of passage. As parents we watch our children proudly when they take that first spin on their two-wheeler with a glint in their eyes and a big smile on their face… the freedom. As a kid there are not many feelings that can match that first ride. Oh, we know there will be a few wipe outs with some big tears, but we will help them climb back on that bike and try, try again.

They will figure it out and a life lesson will be learned along the way… to never give up, to keep trying… all because of two wheels… and like I said earlier there is that sense of freedom!

We watch, as they grow and so do the bikes.

Soon they are smiling as they pass us, and we quickly think back to those early days on the bike. We revel in their success.

Then the day comes when they would rather ride with their friends… oh it will come, if it hasn’t already… their friends will take priority, and we will become second fiddle.

But there is one man who gets to do what so many of us would like to do and that is Henry Eising. He and his 13-year-old son, Lucas, are going on a little bike ride in a week. They are riding from Ancaster, Ontario to Montreal, Quebec with the Sea to Sea Cycling to End

This father-son duo has been cycling throughout Norfolk for the last six weeks, putting in their training. At times, they would ride as far as 100km in heat, hard rain, cold, or wind. The two have endured and when I sat and chatted with them on the deck of the Urban Parisian on a sunny afternoon last week, you could tell they were appreciating the quality time together.

Lucas is the calm, level headed one and well Henry is just a big kid at heart. When Henry talks about the cycling time with his son, his face lights up like a four year old in a candy store. Lucas is excited too, don’t get me wrong, but he is pumped for the ride and raising funds to help those less fortunate.

Lucas was inspired a little over a year ago by

a local swimmer we all know, and at the time he decided he to wanted to make an impact and help folks. He and his dad then found out about Sea to Sea which is a cycling tour that starts in Los Angeles and finishes in New York. The overall goal is to raise over three million dollars to help fight poverty here and abroad.

Our guys will be doing a five-day tour, some days travelling over 140km. So all that training will be coming in handy and Lucas and Henry hope to raise $10,000. If you would like to donate, go to www.seatosea.org and follow them on facebook, Lucas and Henry’s bike trip.

By Dave Scott We always hear about folks who do not have enough to eat. The dollars just don’t stretch through to the end of the month and people have to turn to the local food banks for help. I have written many stories over the years about the local food banks, but it wasn’t until about a week ago that I put those numbers to faces and the reality of the situation clearly hit me.

This was serious business as Dave led the three judges up and down Norfolk Street in Simcoe judging the twelve wonderful gardens that had been planted a few months earlier by the Diamond Diggers.

For those who don’t know who the Diamond Diggers are, they are the brainchild of John Race.

The Diamond Diggers are the combined effort of folks from the Simcoe & District Horticultural Society mentoring Norfolk Association for Community Living (NACL) clients on the fine art of gardening. The two groups worked hand in hand planting their gardens, weeding, and replacing plants. Eising Greenhouses & Garden Centre donated the plants and the Simcoe BIA took care of making sure the gardens were watered… all to the benefit of making Norfolk Street in Simcoe look great!

out of the corner of my eye I happened to look down Kent Street where a fairly large group was standing in front of a store. It was nothing new to see folks lined up to get the deals. As I took a quick turn back and looked again, I realized it was folks waiting in line to get into the Caring Cupboard for food. My heart sank… I realized how much more we as a society need to do to make sure there is enough food for everyone.

The need for food continues to grow all year long, so when you have a chance, pick up a few canned items, drop them off at your local food bank and help make sure there is enough for everyone to eat.

The amazing part of this whole endeavour was the friendships that were formed from this opportunity. Folks from all organizations have helped each other understand a bit more about each other. It was a learning experience all the way around. The flowers may fade with the fall, but I believe that many friendships are just starting to blossom.

By Dave Scott A gathering of kids and adults were found in front of Simcoe Composite School this past Monday morning. They were there to take part in the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise’s, Uncle John’s Soap Box Derby (John Race).

Emcee, Randy Halmo, did a great job keeping the crowd well informed of who was racing and who was up next, while Keith Flexman did a masterful job organizing the event.

As for the races… whoa… the crowd was treated to some very competitive runs, and of course one very special race between the Mayor and Larry Dawson, head of the Simcoe BIA. As you are aware, we don’t often talk about politicians in the Hub, but I will give Mayor Dennis Travale full marks, he was having a

wonderful time and you could tell it was about enjoying the moment and not connected to any bureaucracy.

It was good to see him so relaxed.

I chatted with first time racer, Derek Dawson, who told me, it was fun and he really liked it. The car he was racing in was his dad’s, a vintage, early built, 1970s model… meanwhile Derek’s little brother, Austin, says he will race someday too. Derek looks forward to participating in more races down the road.

John Race commented on all the excitement and what a fabulous day it was for the event, as he proudly presented the winners with their trophies!

Congratulations to all the kids young and old who took part!

Discovering Birds in Norfolk with George & Vic GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER

By George Pond Birding during the breeding season in late May and throughout the month of June is reasonably predictable. When the birder is familiar with the area he/she will have learned over time just what birds are breeding in the various habitats being visited. For example if I’m walking through Backus woods in June, I know that Hooded and Cerulean Warblers, Northern and Louisiana Waterthrush, Scarlet Tanagers, Red-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireos, Pileated, Hairy, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers as well as several other species nest there. I might not find them but at least I can be on the lookout for them.

Birding during migration on the other hand is much more unpredictable. Because of weather conditions I might feel that a good migration has taken place the previous night but I will have only a little idea as to what species of birds may have migrated. That is why I usually start my birding day at the Old Cut banding station at Long Point. First of all Long Point is a magnet for migrating birds and secondly the banders can give me a pretty good idea of what has migrated, how big was the fallout and if any rarities have been spotted.

The banding area is a few acres in size. On Old

Cut Boulevard volunteers at the Visitor Centre welcome visitors who can watch the banders as they band and record vital statistics of each bird caught. Behind this area are the mist nets that trap migrating birds and visitors are welcome to walk and bird along the net trails, provided they don’t touch birds that are trapped in the nets.

I was in this area one May morning, standing along side a board fence when suddenly a beautiful Golden-winged Warbler landed on a Sumac tree just a few feet in front of me. It seemed oblivious of my presence and began hunting tiny insects along the thin trunk of the tree and the cluster of seeds left from the previous fall. I always carry my camera and began shooting pictures.

Several turned out quite well including this one that Vic Gibbons has painted.

Golden-winged Warblers are quite rare in Norfolk. I used to know of several breeding territories but unfortunately these birds often mate with Blue-winged Warblers, a related but stronger species. There are still populations of Golden-winged Warblers in eastern Ontario and I expect there are still a few breeding pairs in this area. Many birders consider the Goldenwinged Warbler as the most beautiful of all the North American Wood Warblers and I’m sure when you look at Vic’s painting you will know

why.

I was excited to finally get a good photo of such an elusive bird and was very pleased that Vic Gibbons liked it enough to leave the bird in basically the same setting. He has added just enough to really accentuate the Golden-winged Warbler in all its beauty. Vic seems to have a knack for knowing just what to add, leave out or change completely in the background in order to make my bird photos true works of art.

WhAt type of pensIon plAn do you hAve?

are two basic types of pension plans: (1) defined benefit and (2) defined contribution.

Defined Benefit Plans With a defined benefit plan, employees know (defined) the pension income (benefit) that will be paid to them in advance of receiving it. The amount of pension an employee will receive is usually based on a formula involving years worked, age and annual wage. Employees prefer this type of pension because they know in advance what they will receive and if the underlying investments do not perform, as in 2008, it is the employers’ responsibility to make up the shortfall.

Defined benefit plans are cost prohibitive for most private sector companies and offered mostly by governments for government employees.

Defined Contribution Plans With a defined contribution plan the employee pension income is dependent on the performance of the underlying assets. The amount of money (contribution) the employer and employee pay to fund the pension is known (defined). However, if the pension investments underperform the employees will receive less pension income. In order to compensate for this, employees must be more vigilant in saving for retirement by other means. Private sector companies usually offer defined contribution pension plans.

In 2009, the Globe and Mail reported the following statistics: • 84% of government workers have pension plans • 78% of those plans are indexed to inflation defined benefit plans • 25% of private sector workers have pension plans • 18% of those plans are defined benefit plans (but not indexed to inflation) • 60% of Canadian workers have no pension plan at all • 45% of Canadian workers have no pension plan or RRSP With increased demand for dwindling tax dollars, it’s likely government defined benefit pension plans will also gradually disappear.

Like many things in life, we are all responsible for own retirement income. This includes writing, updating and implementing our own retirement income plan. If we’re lucky, we can integrate an employer pension into the plan in a way that will maximize retirement income and quality of life in our later years.

that we are in the full swing of summer, it becomes apparent how important Now water is for us, as gardeners, and for our gardens and plants.

It is wonderful when it rains in the summer. Not only are our wells and rain barrels filling, our plants are getting the best water they can get. Or are they?

Unless the rain is consistent and long, rain tends to just bounce off the leaves of the plants, not giving the roots the thorough soaking they require. Do not assume that because it rained, your plants have been well watered. Generally perennials in the ground require one inch of water per week to thrive. Consider using a rain gauge to assess how much rain we receive each week and then supplement when needed.

After a rain, check the weight of your Hanging Baskets, Patio Pots or Window Boxes to assess if they require more water. By becoming familiar with the water weight of your basket you will know when it requires to be watered and when it does not. In most cases, container arrangements in the sun will require daily watering. Shade arrangements may need water less frequently. Water thoroughly and deeply and until the container feels heavy and water drips from the drainage hole in the pot. If the plant is too dry, water will run out quickly. In this case the soil is stressed and shrunken form the side of the pot allowing the water to run out quickly. Water it then re-water again a short time later when the soil has relaxed and expanded.

Your arrangements that are “contained” need your diligence to keep them healthy, growing and blooming. They require you to provide water and food to nourish. If you are fertilizing with a liquid or a water soluble fertilizer, it should be done at least every two weeks. If you prefer slow release pellets, then reapply mid-summer. Be sure to not fertilize when the soil is dry as the fertilizer may burn the roots. Always dampen the soil first with clear water and then use fertilized water.

Bedding plants are in the ground, which therefore can send their roots deep in the earth looking for water. These ground plants can also be fertilized with water soluble or pelletized options, but to save time overall, adding compost to your flower beds each spring will not only add volume to soil compressed over winter, but will also add natural nutrient that is so important for root, foliage and bloom development. If you add compost consistently over the years, you will not need to add additional fertilizer to our perennial or shrub beds.

After a summer rain everything looks clean, fresh and lovely. What are some of the

differences between wood blinds and faux wood blinds?

If you are considering wood blinds for any windows in your home you need to research the pros and cons for both - real wood blinds verses faux wood blinds. One obvious difference is cost - as one might expect, as faux wood blinds are, much more affordable. Faux wood blinds however, still remain a great alternative to genuine wood blinds for a couple of other good reasons.

There are some eco-friendly blinds on the market and they consist of a combination of real wood and man-made recycled materials.

Manufacturers are even moving towards finding more sustainable and biodegradable materials than what we have seen so far. Mostly though, faux blinds are made of PVC or vinyl rendering them, scratch resistant and moisture proof but also they withstand the direct sun very well. Because of their durability and high UV rating they do not fade which is a huge bonus for people who want the integrity of the product to remain new looking for many, many years. Faux wood blinds withstand humidity and extreme temperature changes making them perfect for windows in rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens.

They are easy to maintain and easy to clean.

Real wood blinds are, on the other hand, more prone to scratches and their durability does not

equal that of the faux wood blinds unfortunately. Real wood blinds are prone to warp or crack when exposed to certain harsh elements day after day. Elements such as high humidity or direct sunlight can shorten the lifespan of the blinds regardless of their good care.

They react to their environment.

They do look beautiful and some purists would not even consider having faux wood in their homes regardless of the cost. Some industry insiders maintain that real wood blinds still outsell the faux because of the value they add to a room. Window coverings often mirror the essence of the home or the homemaker. They reflect the personality of the homeowner. For those who have installed real wood floors, choosing to have matching real wood blinds, is as some would say - a no brainer. The overall look is impressive; very rich looking.

Real wood blinds weigh less (less strain on strings when raising and lowering blinds), and they absorb heat and block light inside the house better. The colour choices of the stains for the real wood blinds is much more impressive compared to the “paint” choices used for the vinyl blinds which is limited to date.

Both deliver the benefits of blocking out light and giving you privacy but each does so in a unique way. There are definitely

pros and cons for each. There are a lot of choices on the market as the industry has changed so much in the last fifteen years that the consumer really has to do their research to weed out what is best for their environment. Next time we will delve into the changes happening in the window covering industry regarding roller shades because they are another option that should not be overlooked. The trend towards motorization and fabric choices that have become more residential oriented is exciting.

As I was watering the plants on the deck on the weekend, I noticed a large bee bumbling (is this how they got their names?) around on the deck railing, seemingly disoriented and unable to take off.

On closer examination, I realized that it was so covered in pollen that it was having a hard time getting its bearings. After a few minutes, however, it managed to get its act together and off it flew.

However, it made me aware of all the bumblebees that were busily gathering nectar and pollen and I watched them for a while. The flowers that the bees were most interested in were the snapdragons. This is one flower that depends heavily on pollinators for fertilization to ensure the next generation of plants. Since the pollen is trapped inside a “snapping” trap, it isn’t easily blown about by the wind. In order to attract the right kind of pollinators to itself, the snapdragon has made some unique adaptations. To get to the nectar and pollen inside the flower

head, a certain amount of weight needs to sit on the lower lip of the bell-shaped flower to trigger the opening of the flower. If the insect is not heavy enough, it cannot gain access to the nectar that is in the narrow floral tube. The bumblebee, however, is just the right weight to trip the opening mechanism, enabling it to get to the nectar and pollen held within the flower.

To attract the bumblebees, the snapdragons release four times more scent during the day, when bumblebees are most active, than they do at night. If the flower isn’t mature enough for pollination, it does not release as much scent so the pollinators are not attracted to them. The scent comes from the lobes of the petals, so when a bee lands on it, the scent is carried back to the hive, attracting more bees to the plant.

The colouration of a snapdragon is also important for the pollinators.

Bees cannot see red, but do see yellow, blue and ultraviolet. As a result, most bee-pollinated flowers are yellow or blue with ultraviolet nectar guides or “landing patterns” that attract bees and help them find the nectar. Although I have some deep, wine red snapdragons, most of them have a yellow centre that helps the bees find the nectar.

The sturdy, irregular bell-shape

of the snapdragon fits the shape of a bumblebee’s body so that when it crawls into the tight squeeze of the flower’s interior, the pollen sticks to the “fur” on the bee’s body. As I watched the bumblebees crawling into and out of the flowers, I realized that they would pause after they emerged and clean the pollen off their bodies and deposit the pollen into a “basket” on their hind legs. When the pollen basket is empty, it is a large, flat shiny area with spiky hairs around the edge.

When it is full of pollen, however, it looks like a large orange, yellow or red lump on the outside of the leg.

The bumblebee moistens the pollen with some nectar to make it sticky and stay in the basket. When a pollen basket is full it can weigh as much as 0.01 g and contain as much as a million pollen grains.

So just what are the bees looking for, pollen or nectar? In fact, they want both. They use the nectar as an energy source and, in some cases, to make honey, and they use the pollen for protein and as food for their larvae. The flowers benefit from this because as the bee moves from flower to flower, some of the pollen, which is the male genetic material, gets deposited on the female part of another flower and fertilizes that flower so that it can produce a viable seed to produce the

next generation. The nectar, which is a sweet, juicy secretion produced by the flowers, is the incentive that encourages the pollinators to visit the flower in the first place. In the case of the snapdragon, to ensure that the nectar is not “wasted” on the wrong kind of insect (one too small to get pollen stuck on it and help in the pollination process), the petals won’t open for just any insect – they must be of the right weight, which the bumblebee seems to be.

As for the bumblebee that first caught my interest on the deck, I wonder if perhaps it got caught inside a snapdragon flower and had a hard time opening it from the inside, and, while “bumbling” around trying to find the exit, it managed to get itself totally covered in pollen.
