By Dave Scott When you stand at the very tip of Long Point, it is like you are at the meeting point of two different worlds. It is sheer beauty, a sand spit like no other, giving you this incredible feeling, like you are on an island somewhere. So why would anyone want to leave it, let alone swim from the Long Point lighthouse 30 km to Port Dover?

Well that my friends, is a good question. Here is a story about a guy, his training partner, and the journey they took last Friday night…

To understand the two folks I am talking about, you need to go back to last year’s Lake Ontario crossing where Chris Peters was a pacer for Annaleise and Lisa Anderson was her coach.

The whole crew spent the summer together, forming many new friendships, one of those being between Chris and Lisa.

Chris has wanted his next big swim challenge to be Long Point to Port Dover for many years.

He knew at 48 years old, it was now or never if he was going to complete his ultimate challenge.

As far as anyone knows, there is no record of the swim being done by anyone before. The 30 km distance is by no means a walk in the park.

The water at the end of Long Point has taken its share of boats and lives. It is not to be messed with. Anyone who swims or boats in the area is aware of the crazy undercurrents that happen there, which is the other reason this swim is so important to Chris. Just like everyone else, it breaks his heart every time he hears of someone drowning… another preventable tragedy.

Chris realized that with this swim he could raise awareness of both water safety and the critical issue of teaching children to swim.

He decided he would team up with our local Jumpstart chapter at Canadian Tire and he met with Mary Taylor, owner of Canadian Tire Simcoe. The two realized that by working together they could help a lot of children get into swimming (go to www.jumpstart.ca and make a donation).

He is the easiest guy to hang out with, is always the first guy there to help others, and he never stops smiling. Well wait a minute, there was this one time he wasn’t… something about oatmeal… you will have to ask him.

Swimming has been a big part of his life and he has many fond memories of wonderful times with his brothers and sister at the pool and lake. …but it is not all peaches and cream with Chris. He has the heart of a lion and the drive and energy like very few folks I know. The look in his eyes on the boat ride out to Long Point

(when he finally took off his sunglasses) was pure determination. I knew then he was going to complete this swim. When you mix it all together, what you get is a man whose passion for life and helping those around him is unquestionable!

The yin to Chris’s yang is Lisa Anderson. She is an accomplished swimmer and a top rated coach who loves to teach. Her drive to help others within the swimming ranks and beyond has cemented her place in our swimming community. She has a strong personality and wears her heart on her sleeve. She was determined to help Chris make his swim come true and was with him every stroke of the way!

Me, I had it easy, just get some of the team back together from last year’s adventure, fine-tune a few things, hold a few meetings, a couple of practices and hit the water.

Last Friday was the original date but bad weather dictated it was not to be… another week of waiting, and wondering. For swimmers of open water it can be frustrating to say the least. Everyone is asking, ‘When are you going?

What’s wrong?’ It is hard to regain your focus.

When this Friday arrived both Chris and Lisa were ready and eager to get the swim underway.

I could go on and on about our amazing water and ground crew but that is not the type of people they are. Their strength is their friendship to each other. When Chris announced that he wanted to do the swim, they all said they were in. They know if they wanted to do something Chris would be the first person there to help them.

Our crew understands the importance of communication and being consistent for a project of this size. The mental make-up on the water is that of precision and balance; people who never get too excited or too down. When the swimmers see them as calm, they stay calm and focused. The crew knows from experience just what needs to be done!

Last Friday evening just after 8 pm, Chris and Lisa left the long wait and anxiety behind. They touched the light house at Long Point, covered from head to toe in lanolin, gave each other one last high five, and slipped into the calm Lake Erie waters; swimming as the sun slowly faded into the lake in the western sky.

Our diamond formation of boats were in place around the swimmers; the Chuckwagon leading the way, followed by our lead paddler to the right of the swimmer, and myself to the left in my kayak, our two zodiacs tucked in behind each paddler and bringing up the rear was our second big boat, Tread n Water.

We were off to a fantastic start.

Curt, our team photographer, had zodiac two zooming him around, capturing the night beauty and the grace of the two swimmers gliding through the waters. This young man is amazing with his camera; check out all the pictures and video from this amazing journey at www. curtisphoto.weebly.com.

Chris and Lisa set the pace and began an hour and half swim before taking a break. Now if you don’t really know a lot about open water swimming, it is imperative to keep your swimmers fed. After the first hour and a half, Chris and Lisa would feed and drink every 20 minutes. Their water bottles tethered to the boat and their food tossed or handed to them. They never touched the boat or got out of the water.

Chris was just chomping at the bit to go and needed to be reminded to relax and not over do it early in the 30 km swim, probably just a little nervous energy. Lisa also became more consistent as the swim wore on.

The night waters were calm; we could not have picked a better night. The chatter from the crew on the walkie-talkies was as relaxed as the water itself. Chris was a little concerned about getting too cold, the shivers he sometimes had may have played a part in the cramping he felt later on.

Chris understood the mental part of the swim and how your mind could cast doubt at the craziest times. His focus would always come

back to the positive, keeping the negative thoughts at bay, knowing full well he was going to get this swim done.

A call came over the radio, reminding us to look at the moon as it rose in the evening, greeting us with its awe. Cloud patches hid the stars from us for some of the night and at other times the stars would overpower the sky.

The hours slowly began to slip by and the waves were building up out of the southeast, which provided a few challenges, but again nothing the crew could not handle. The waves were somewhat of a benefit pushing the swimmers towards Port Dover. Still, as the waves slid back away, a little push back would occur to the swimmers, disrupting their rhythm.

The swim carried on as usual and at 1:30 am it was the pacer family who joined in the fun (the pacer’s job is to swim for an hour and help the swimmer maintain a pace). The pacers are a critical component to the success of the swim. It makes a difference for the swimmers to see a fresh face in the water beside them, bringing them new energy to feed off of. Our two pacers were Scot Brockbank and Nancy Norton, veterans at pacing. First up was Scot with his playful personality, bringing a big grin to the swim.

He was ready and could not wait to hit the water. Chris and Lisa both picked up the pace when Scot joined in the fun.

The next hour saw Nancy join Chris and Lisa, while Scot took a break and refuelled. The tandem pacers would continue to take turns all the way to Dover… they too were not going to let their friends stop and would do whatever it took to get them there.

Around 3 am Chris experienced some cramping. Salt pills were brought to him to take, and the

cramping subsided shortly after. At the moment he began to cramp he let out a holler. The tone indicated there was a problem and most likely created that moment of doubt in his mind, but like I said, there was no way a cramp would stand in his way.

The waves continued to grow around us and both Lisa and Chris soldiered on, taking on waves that rolled beneath them, picked them up sliding them forward and then just a slight tug back as the wave pulled away…

The morning sky was lit in brilliant red amber, as we looked over and realized we were just a few short hours away from finishing this incredible 30 km crossing.

With the morning’s light, Chris realized this crossing was going to get done. You could see the pace had slowed over the night and the arms of the swimmers weren’t nearly as clean in their strokes as when they entered the water. Chris and Lisa both knew they would make it; it was just a matter of time now. Each hour the pier of Dover grew more visible, encouraging the crew. Both pacers were now in the water and the swim markers at Dover beach just visible. Chris could see the red dots of Jumpstart shirts lining the beach.

The emotions were washing over him… after all those hours of training, the sacrifices his family had made for him, his late dad and brothers would be so proud of him… his mom was waiting on shore after being up all night worrying. She had stood at David’s Restaurant at 5 am in the morning, waving a Canadian flag, hoping her son would see it. His sister, who had come up from Florida to share the moment was there. The dedicated ground crew and friends were standing by.

His wife and daughters were ready to welcome him to shore; there to support and share the moment with him… after twelve months of preparation, it was all right there,

a little under 300 metres to go.

We can see the crowd on the pier waving and cheering. The two big boats pull away, the zodiacs drop back, the pacers and kayakers peel away, their jobs are done… this is Chris and Lisa’s moment. They hit the shallows mere metres from the beach, their legs are shaky as they try to stand… the big smile on Chris’s face says it all, the hundred or so folks who have gathered cheer wildly… both swimmers are exhausted and share the moment, turning they acknowledge their crew before coming ashore… their journey complete… Chris’s dream accomplished… I stand beside my kayak covered in lanolin from the hug I received from Chris. It is not a moment I will soon forget… I tell him I am so proud of him.

Lisa and her husband, Steve, come together. Steve is so happy for his wife. The crew heads in between the piers to return their boats to their slips… it has been an incredible 13 hour journey. History has been made, being the first to swim from Long Point to Port Dover… just a note to put the accomplishment in perspective, Chris and Lisa did 30 km; the English Channel is 34 km… it is that tough of a swim.

By Dave Scott Michael Pacheco was ready to go.

He was on his way Monday morning to Montreal and then to Sherbrooke, Quebec to participate in the Canada Summer Games. He is in five different swimming events: 50m back crawl, 50m free, 50m breast, 100m back and 100m free. His strongest events are the two free style. Michael can barely contain his excitement and cannot wait to hit the pool.

Attending the Games with Michael will be coach Shirley Shaw who has watched Michael’s quick progress

over the last two years. Ed Doerksen who has also assisted Michael with his swimming, agrees with Shirley on Michael’s progress and both say the sky is the limit for this young 22 year old.

Michael’s goal at the games is to try and qualify for the Nationals and his times are comparative to the top competitors in the country.

A father and son team is preparing to cycle more than 688 kilometres from Ancaster, On to Montreal, QC in just six days with at least 235 other riders, hoping to raise more than $1.5 million to help fight world poverty.

Lucas Eising, just 12 years old, will cycle from August 12th – 17th with his Dad and at least 235 other riders currently registered to participate in what is likely to be the largest group of cyclists to ever cross North America.

Lucas, who will be the youngest rider on the tour, was inspired by his friend Annaleise Carr to do something “adventurous for a good cause”.

The Sea to Sea 2013 Bike Tour, staged by Partners Worldwide, the Reformed Church in America (RCA), and World Renew/CRWRC—an agency of the Christian Reformed Church in America (CRC), begins June 21 in Los Angeles, CA., and ends nine weeks later in New York City.

“I’m very proud of my son Lucas for his determination in training and his compassion for those less fortunate,” Eising said. “This is a chance to spend a week riding with my son for a very good cause, and with a great group of people.”

For their part, the father and Son team hopes to raise at least $10,000. The overall tour fundraising target of $1.5 million will be used to fund local initiatives like Soup kitchens, Crisis Pregnancy Centres and disaster response as well as international initiatives that range from trying to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa to programs that help poor farmers improve their crop yields in Central America. The tour will partner with non-governmental organizations already involved in offering assistance to those in need.

By MARG WERDEN Are the dragons in as much danger as the damsels?

Although they are not yet out in large numbers, dragonflies and damselflies are beginning to fly around the pond doing what they do best: catching mosquitoes, which is a really good reason to protect these insects.

Dragonflies have an incredibly long history on earth. While dinosaurs roamed the earth about 200 million years ago, ancestors of present-day dragonflies were darting around 100 million years before the time of the dinosaurs.

Fossilized remains of these prehistoric insects show that they had wingspans of up to 65 cm (26 in) and were probably the largest insect to have ever lived on earth.

Adult dragonflies and damselflies make a tasty treat for a number of birds, including Purple Martins, and other common predators such as spiders and frogs. The larvae are eaten by frogs, toads, newts, fish and Kingfishers. However, one of the main threats to these insects is human activity. Because the

Odonata (the insect order to which dragonflies and damselflies belong) larvae can only live in oxygen-rich and unpolluted water, pollution and changes to their habitat can have an effect on their populations.

In fact, dragonflies are frequently used to assess environmental health because they are so sensitive to water and habitat quality. If Odonata disappear from your water, you know there is something wrong with the habitat.

Loss of habitat when wetlands are drained to create farmland or a new suburb is contributing to a decline in the population of some dragonflies and damselflies.

Although insects have never been studied to the same extent as more charismatic species (mammals and birds), a limited study conducted a few years ago indicated that at least ten per cent of dragonfly and damselfly species were threatened.

However, researchers said that there was too little data on about 35 per cent of the species to come up with conclusive results about their status.

Dragonflies and damselflies share some characteristics, including membranous wings, large eyes, slender bodies, and small antennae, but there are clear differences between the two sub-orders. The most obvious differences are in their eyes, body shape and wings.

Damselflies, such as this Bluet, have slimmer bodies than dragonflies and hold their wings close to their bodies when at rest.

Dragonfly eyes are located at the top of their head and either touch each other or nearly touch, while damselfly eyes are located to each side of the head. While dragonfly bodies are usually stocky with two dissimilar wing pairs, the hind one of which is broader at the base, damselflies are Dragonflies, such as the Common long and slender with two wing Whitetail, have been studied by pairs similar in shape. lzheimer Society Hosting Children’s Education Program, Brain Waves

The Alzheimer Society Haldimand Norfolk is pleased to offer “Brain Waves”, an education series for children ages seven to twelve who love someone with Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia. This program will run Monday, August 12 through Friday, August 16, 9 am to 3 pm at Hazel Place, 645 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe. Cost is $50 per child.

Children will discuss what they already know or think they know about dementia, they will be given some basic information about how the brain functions and through activities come to understand that although other functions of the brain will be affected by dementia, feelings remain.

Through various activities, children will learn

about how brain function and the environment affect the behaviours of the person with dementia.

Children will also learn tips and strategies for good communication and appropriate activities for a person with dementia. Children will learn how dementia affects the family and will create a memory wallet for the person they love.

“Children who participate in this education series will feel better equipped to handle the issues related to their experience with dementia”, states Susan Cuming, Public Education Coordinator for the Society. For more information or to register, please call (519) 428-7771.
