By Dave Scott Telling a story is sometimes very easy... everything flows, the interview, the thought process before putting it to paper, they all play out the way I see it in my mind… okay, so I am a bit of an odd duck, but it is what works for me.

Other times everything for a story is like a puzzle and it takes a bit of time to put all the pieces together.

Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) called a few months back looking for some coverage on an event in support of palliative care. So I asked if there was someone in the Palliative Care Unit that I could interview. The suggestion came back that I could talk to Natasha Martin, the head of the fourth floor where the Palliative Care Unit is. After a few emails Natasha and I found a time we could meet, and off to the hospital I went.

I arrived and hopped on the elevator, as I was travelling to the fourth floor, I began to wonder how long Natasha had been doing this job... in my mind, I figured probably about twenty years.

I also guessed that she is most likely a guarded person and very refined in what she says...

My mind snapped back as the door of the elevator door slid open. I was at the Complex Care Unit located on the fourth floor, which according to the NGH website, is for patients with medically complex conditions that require unique programming which cannot be managed in Long Term Care facilities. It is an eighteen bed unit comprised of nine restorative beds, three palliative care beds and six medically complex beds. This unit is staffed with registered nurses and registered practical nurses, along with other multidisciplinary professionals (i.e. speech pathologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, recreational therapist) who collaborate with patients and their families to provide quality care that is patient focused.

By Wilma F. Montgomery Some of our readers will remember that I used to write for The Hub on a regular basis, once a month or so, as the Norview Newshounds. I retired a couple of years ago now, but it’s been gratifying that from time to time a few people have asked if I would do some more writing, and since Dave and Monica are cool with the idea, here we go.

I’m thinking that it will be a ‘sharing’ of my travels, thoughts, experiences, and viewpoints kind of thing from the perspective of a retired, single, female, senior. Hopefully my readers will not find it a major snoozefest.

I guess it was about 20 years ago that I started what we’ve all come to know as our Bucket List.

You know, that list of things that you want to do before you die. Mine started when I went on a Barefoot Windjammer cruise in 1993 or so. The British Virgin Islands were/are so beautiful; I took so many pictures and still enjoy the memories today. The company no longer exists, but cruising the Caribbean in a smallish Barkintyne with about 75 other passengers was a thrill of a lifetime.

into her, broom closet size, office… no really, it was broom closet size, barely enough room for both of us to sit. All my thoughts during the elevator ride about the person I was about to meet, could not have been further from the truth. She talked quickly and I threw out the questions as swiftly as I could. We took a couple of minutes to make sure we were comfortable holding a conversation. It turns out that she too is originally from Port Dover and well the discussion picked up from there. I directed my line of questioning so that I could find out just what took Natasha into nursing.

Natasha who is in her mid thirties, had transferred from Emergency when the job came up for the Complex Care Unit at the hospital a little under a year ago. The new position offered daytime shifts that allowed Natasha more time with her children. She was shifting from an area in the hospital where you do everything you possible can to save a life, to an area that included palliative care, where you do everything you can to make the patient and the family as comfortable as possible as someone’s life draws to a close. For her, it was a big change in thinking as she said, “Head to toe, palliative care is a different mind set.”

Natasha explained to me that the nurses assist not just the patient, but the family too, doing whatever they can to make that day, a better day for them.

The nurses, personal support workers (PSW) and volunteers that work with Natasha are the heart and the soul of the floor. They are dedicated, compassionate people who answer questions and help folks face and cope with an end of life situation. It can be as simple as holding a hand, offering a hug, or just sitting at their bedside; being there to help families understand the array of emotions they may be dealing with at that time. Simply put, they are there for us. Natasha offers some sound advice to families who are dealing with an end of life situation, “Love your family member. Love will lead to the right decisions.”

The Petrified Forest was on my list because of the movie with Humphrey Bogart; I must say that it was nothing like what I expected. A friend and I travelled through the Meteor Crater, the Petrified Forest, Painted Desert and the Grand Canyon and some other places that were fascinating. There’s a whole story there by itself, not just a story of beauty and grandeur of nature but also of personal growth and renewal and a reclaiming of self.

While using up vacation time just prior to retiring, I went to the second week of a two week Medieval War camp in Butler County, Pennsylvania. It’s called Pennsic and in 2011, it was year XL. For a week I immersed myself in all things Medieval and the learning curve during this week was amazing. It had been 10 years since I had been but it hadn’t lost any of its lustre. I went from class to class, trying to absorb all that information; there’s another article right there.

I celebrated my 65th birthday on the road in Northern Ontario, travelling with a friend as I visited my youngest brother; then began the trek across Canada in my car. The prairies and southern BC provided a whole new experience; I

grandmother was in the Palliative Care Unit a short time ago.

As our conversation continues, it is beyond obvious, just how passionate this women is about her job. You can feel the positive energy within her and at the same time recognize the emotional tones in her voice that speak volumes of the kindred spirit she shares with each patient during their end of life experience…

What drives Natasha? Why nursing?

She is a nurse because many years ago her twin sister was in a near fatal car accident. It was touch and go for Natasha’s sister. She lay in the hospital in Hamilton with family surrounding her. It was during this time that Natasha saw the compassion and dedication that the nurses had, not just for her sister’s wellbeing, but for the whole family, “They cared about all of us.” There was one nurse in particular whom Natasha said, “She made me feel better.” After that, Natasha knew she wanted to be a nurse; she wanted to be like that nurse.

Natasha’s sister recovered slowly and went on to be a personal support worker. She is currently working at NGH, the same hospital as Natasha.

I have to tell you I did this interview a few months ago and for myself it has taken a long time to write. I think in a way it made me think about something I never really want to discuss.

It made me open my eyes a little wider and look at something none of us can avoid (even if we all believe we are invincible). After my talk with Natasha, I have begun to look at how I would like things arranged if that situation occurs. I remember Natasha stressing communication to your family, so they understand your wishes, making it easier on everyone.

I asked Natasha one other question, “What do people want when they are at the their last grasp of life?”

She simple states, “Most people just want someone there with them.”

Sometimes that person is a nurse… to Natasha and her team of nurses, personal support workers and volunteers… thank you for being there!

followed friends and their RV out to Vancouver Island. I stayed a week out there, and then continued down the west coast of the states to Big Sur, another Bucket List destination. The mountain driving gave me my first real taste of abject, frozen in place terror. I not entirely laughingly call that one, Feel the Fear and do it anyway. There is a tribute to teachers everywhere in that one.

My visit to Big Sur was bittersweet. The day was surreal, poetic, almost spiritual. I’m still pondering that whole day.

By Dave Scott The hardest thing to predict when holding an outdoor sporting event is the weather. It can be stunning and beautiful one minute, only to have showers filling the sky the next.

We are pretty lucky for the most part in Southern Ontario, because at least we have a rough idea of what is coming. The weather created havoc this past Friday with some fairly large thunderstorms hitting the area. The front page photo shows a small example of sky being lit up by some brilliant lighting.

By Dave Scott Another year has come and gone at camp and of course a week of fun was made to order with great weather.

Calm waters and cool crafts were just part of the fun. Out on the water the kids had the opportunity to explore the old sunken pier off of Port Ryerse and take a nice little meandering paddle up Young’s Creek. Of course there was the usual array of swimming time and just good old fashion beach sand play. It was great to see kids just being kids and playing, with no electronic gadgets to be found. I guess we forget sometimes that a creative mind sitting on the beach with friends and sand toys can go a long way to help a child learn the simple things in life… like face-to-face communication, sharing, playing together and just having fun.

violent weather was just too unpredictable to put folks in the water (Jumpstart the Swim has been rescheduled for this weekend).

I stopped by the Coast Guard office last Saturday morning to confirm that the waters were too churned up to be safe in. The coast guard official, called the lake a dog’s breakfast (meaning a mess). It was a term I had not heard for a long time, but I knew what it meant… no swim that day. There were three different weather fronts occurring all at once between Long Point and Port Dover Saturday morning.

K ayak Camp

Every year we do camp, I remind myself how lucky we are to be able to do it, to just let kids play and develop skills that sometimes I think are slipping away. You just see them come alive when they climb into the kayak; them in the bow, me in the stern as we ride the waves.

The excitement of being on the water and of course the shouts of joy as we return to camp and they jump from the kayak to swim to shore.

All the while having fun and learning a water safety skill they may use some day.

All in all it was a great camp and thanks to supporters for keeping the camp going. See you next year!

We will monitor the weather reports all week to look for the perfect weather pattern to get the crossing underway… it is a hurry up and wait scenario.

By Dave Scott The weather may have been a little unsettled Saturday morning, but that did not stop the Tour de Norfolk from kicking off, or the 1,200 participants who got their wheels rolling, ready to cycle all over Norfolk this past weekend.

Sunday afternoon, my sidekick photographer Lirum, and I met up with a few folks arriving back at the Delhi rink after taking in a 100 km ride.

Lynn Richmond of Silver Hill, Dawn Benoit and Rob Glen of Woodstock, and Alex and Eric Stevens of Delhi all enjoyed the beautiful ride and said they will be back again next year.

For Lynn and Dawn this was their second year of the Tour de Norfolk, stepping up from their 75 km last year to the

100 km this year.

Lynn explained that she got involved in cycling after watching her daughter (Alex) in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer last year. It got her excited and lo and behold for her 50th birthday she received a bike and has been riding ever since.

For Rob this was his first ride and he says he will be back! All commented on the beautiful scenery, the great route and the quiet back roads. It was time to stop hassling these folks and let them get inside to enjoy a hearty spaghetti dinner… and that they did!

Congratulations to Yvette Mahieu and her team of volunteers on another successful tour, bringing folks to discover Norfolk County!

Sailing School

The winds of change have come to The Port Dover Yacht Club Sailing School.

This year the PDYC Sailing School is opening up a host of new introductory sailing programs to try to interest more youth in a sport that is still largely unfamiliar to many.

Lisa Marr, program coordinator, said one of the goals of the founding members of the sailing school several years ago was to try to make sailing and Long Point Bay as accessible as possible and to try to attract as many youth as possible to sailing as a sport as well as a pastime.

“We were finding that we have been getting a lot of our original kids back every year to our regular certified programs - which is terrific, it’s definitely what you want to see,” she said. “But last year we saw a dip in first-timers, kids who by and large have never been on a boat.”

The result is a set of new programs called Discover Sail for youth, teens and adults.

Registration for the two-day youth program but there are also a new one-day option for youth and teens 13 to 19: on three select dates: July 30, July 31 or August 6 from 9 am to 4 pm for $50 plus tax. There are a few spots still left in the Discover Sail program for adults in a two-Thursday night package starting July 25 and then again in August.

Marr said the sailing school has also entered an exciting partnership with a local Scouts group to offer a one-day program just for Scouts and she’s hopeful that relationship will grow and evolve next year.

“We see a lot of complements between ours and other organizations aimed at youth,” she said. “Sailing a dinghy does so much for a young person’s self-esteem, self-confidence not to mention physical skill building. Our philosophy is in line with Sail Canada’s Sailing to win, Sailing for life motto. We are teaching the kids to be competitive yes, but it’s more than just about winning a race, it’s also challenging them to race against themselves - what goals can they set for themselves and what can they achieve?”

“What’s exciting for us as an organization is to see the gradual interest and understanding of the sport of sailing in general,” she said. “People on the beach see our boats sailing by and see the kids skipping. It’s been fun.”

The sailing school has enjoyed stable growth over the past two years, she said, thanks in large part to interest by grandparents who are looking to find something to do with visiting grandkids.

“We’ve found that grandparents often ask ‘will they be tired at the end of the day’” said Marr.

“We can definitely guarantee that.”

When Mumford & Sons announced their tour was stopping in rural, charming Norfolk County, they woke up this farming community’s music soul.

The Grammy Award-winning musicians selected the Norfolk County Fairgrounds in the small town of Simcoe for their only Canadian location (August 23-24) among the five Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers. Norfolk County was chosen for many reasons, including the area’s deep music roots.

Rick Danko of the legendary rock group The Band grew up here. As a teen in the 1950s, he played the many dance halls in Norfolk County – from Port Dover and Turkey Point, to Delhi and Long Point – headlining for bigger names such as Ronnie Hawkins.

“Norfolk County Council will be honouring Rick Danko’s memory with signage in the rural area around Blayney and Bill’s Corners where he grew up,” said Mayor Dennis Travale.

Danko never forgot his roots, according to his friend and longtime publicist Carol Caffin: “His eyes would light up when he talked about Simcoe. It was a major part of who he was. He would say, ‘I’m just a country boy’.” Caffin operates facebook.com/rickydanko.

From the 1940s to ’70s, famous musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, The Guess Who, Lighthouse and RUSH performed at dance halls across Norfolk County.

A comedic stage adaptation of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film The 39 Steps (1935) is headed to the Lighthouse Theatre stage. The play will offer plenty of laughs a suspenseful, fast-paced story, and a complex plot that Artistic Director Derek Ritschel says will “challenge and thrill” audiences.

The 39 Steps is one of the original stories featuring a “man on the run,” which has become a standard plot device. The spy thriller, set during the First World War, was originally adapted by Hitchcock from the novel of the same name, written by John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir. The Scottish-born Buchan is a significant figure in Canada’s history, serving as Canada’s Governor General from 1935 until his death in 1940.

During his life, Buchan wrote 35 novels and 51 non-fiction books.

The 39 Steps has been adapted into a film three times, and a television series entitled Hannay, based on the novel’s protagonist Richard Hannay, aired in England for two seasons in 1988 and 1989.

Barlow’s stage adaptation calls for four actors to play every character from the filmed version, including inanimate objects. In this version, the spy story is played for comedic effect. “The action is still there,” said Artistic Director Ritschel, “but some of the spy genre archetypes are toyed with in clever ways. The only way to fully appreciate what Barlow has achieved here is to of course see the play in person.”

Stops include Port Dover’s Harbour Museum, with its Rock and Roll Beachhead exhibit about the famous Summer Garden dance hall. That is where Danko met Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson, who eventually formed The Band.

A free downtown street festival will be held alongside the Mumford & Sons stopover, with three stages featuring local musicians and entertainers, local food, activities and buskers.

Steps

Lighthouse debut in the 2011 production of The Melville Boys, has returned to Port Dover to star in The 39 Steps. Olthuis says that audiences can expect a “fascinating” piece of theatre featuring four actors at the top of their game.

“There are a lot of creative opportunities in the script,” Olthuis said. “We’re exploring the magic side of theatre.”

Starring alongside Olthuis are three newcomers to the Lighthouse stage: Ted Atherton, Bruce Davies, and William Matthews.

The 39 Steps is directed by Lighthouse favourite Ralph Small, who last appeared on stage in the 2012 thriller comedy I’ll Be Back Before Midnight. He’s also made

audiences laugh with his roles in Looking (2010), Grounded (2009), and Separate Beds (2006). The 39 Steps is his Lighthouse Theatre directorial debut.

The local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is pleased to extend our congratulations to Miss Jessica VandenBussche on her successful bike ride across Ontario to raise awareness of the positive benefits of exercise on Mental Health.

Jessica VandenBussche, a resident of Turkey Point, biked from Thunder Bay to Ottawa to raise awareness that exercise is a means to maintaining good mental health with a message that exercise may even help prevent a mental break-down. It is well known that a fit body can lead to a fit mind and Jessica helped reinforce that fact.

The section of the Lynn Valley Trail from Decou Road to Lynn Valley Road will be temporarily closed on weekdays starting Monday, July 29th to allow repair of two bridges (Burt and Robinson bridges) and resurfacing of the trail. The length of the total project is projected to be six weeks, dependent on favourable weather.

Trail Closure signs will be posted at both entrances to the Lynn Valley Trail and at other entry points to advise trail users of the temporary closure.

The entire length of the Lynn Valley Trail will be open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the construction period and for

three days during the Mumford and Sons Concert weekend (Friday, August 23rd, Saturday the 24th including Sunday the 25th).

In late August or early September, two additional sections of the Lynn Valley Trail will also be resurfaced.

A small portion of the Trail from the Pennington Bridge towards Simcoe will take one day to be resurfaced.

The section of trail from Prospect Street in Port Dover to St. John’s Road will take approximately four days to resurface. Trail Closure notices will be posted to advise trail users.

These major repairs to the two bridges along with trail resurfacing will ensure the longevity and safety

of the Lynn Valley Trail for many years to come.

Robert Simon M. Construction Ltd. of Waterford is the contractor for this project. Vallee Consulting Engineers, Architects and Planners will provide engineering administration and oversight for the project.

The Lynn Valley Trail Association would like to thank those providing financial support; including Norfolk County, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, local business and corporate donors, Service Clubs, along with individual and family donors. Any additional funds raised over and above those targeted to the bridge repairs will be used to

improve trail gates and complete additional trail resurfacing.

As long as I’m in a relatively safe spot, I enjoy watching a good thunderstorm and after the heat we had last week, I was fairly certain that when the storm arrived, it would be a good one. I was not disappointed. Fortunately, however, damage in this area was minimal, unlike in eastern Ontario. My daughter, who lives in Gananoque lost several trees and was without power for almost 24 hours. The damage in her neighbourhood points to a possible microburst. This is a localized column of sinking air that produces damaging straight-line winds that move out from a central point, distinguishable from tornadoes, which generally have convergent, circular winds. My sister, outside Ottawa, said that one of her neighbours lost 17 large trees on his property. Lots of firewood for the coming winter! And this is just one of 1,800 thunderstorms that take place around the world every day!

Whether you enjoyed the show or not, you have to admit that the cooler weather that came with the storm was most welcome.

Multi-species feeder

A few weeks ago, Frances Smith, a Hub reader from Port Ryerse, called to ask me what had happened to the Baltimore Orioles that had been at her feeder quite regularly but were no longer using it. I had also noticed that the Orioles weren’t visiting my feeder as often and I speculated that perhaps they were in chickfeeding mode and were looking for more substantial fare for their growing brood.

I did a bit of research and found out that Orioles eat a variety of food including insects, fruit and nectar.

The proportion of each food varies by season: in summer when they are breeding and feeding their young, they concentrate on insects, which are richer in the proteins the chicks need to grow. Some of the insects Orioles eat include many pest species such as tent caterpillars, gypsy moth caterpillars, fall

‘not gonna happen’ things and then last year, the opportunity arose most unexpectedly and I grasped the brass ring. Two weeks in Malaysia and a week in Central China in August were amazing. It’s taking awhile to find the words to express it, but it’s coming together.

Alaska was on my list as another ‘probably not going to happen’ things but there too, the opportunity presented itself and I grabbed it with both hands. This May I went on a week long Alaskan cruise and saw the aspects of Alaska that had so fascinated me, the glaciers. It too was full of surprises though.

Perhaps another story there.

The Question Mark butterfly took advantage of an easily available source of energy at an oriole feeder. webworms, spiny elm caterpillars, and the larvae within plant galls.

In the spring and the fall, nectar and ripe fruits are a larger part of their diet as these sugary foods are easily converted into fat, which gives them the energy to migrate.

Unfortunately, their love of fruits can cause crop damage and some fruit growers consider these birds a pest.

The Orioles eventually returned to the feeder and showed their young fledglings how to get at the nectar, but more recently I have seen a number of other birds, including a House Finch and a Downy Woodpecker taking advantage of the readily available food source.

Over the weekend, I also noticed a Question Mark butterfly sipping at the nectar. So, despite the fact that the Orioles are no longer as active at the feeder, for the sake of the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, other birds, and for the butterflies, I will keep the nectar out there freshening it up every couple of days so that it doesn’t start to ferment.

Spirit Walk: A Community Celebration of Norfolk's Nature through theatre

Scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef or Galapagos Islands is on my list under ‘never, ever going to happen’ but an offshoot of a discussion on the cruise may just bring that dream to fruition. So, never say never.

There are also the cultural diversities that you run across as you travel, sometimes right within our own country. The difference in amenities can be quite challenging too. I’ve got one article in the works that I’m calling, Game of Thrones, The T.P. Trail. Yes, it’s just what you think. Stay tuned for a giggle or two with that one.

Travelling as a senior, a woman, and alone has its trials and tribulations. It’s not always easy to get around, sometimes it’s scary,

sometimes it’s just plain painful.

Getting older is not always that much fun. Hey, who am I kidding; it’s fun, just sometimes a little painful, and occasionally a trifle inconvenient.

The bottom line is; life is what you make it. Life is a constant learning curve, a constant challenge. And when people say to me, ‘well, I can’t because-’, I think of the Seniors with whom I spent the last 25 years of my work life and the lessons that they taught me.

I’m still in my 60’s and relatively able but I still try to remember to pack my folding cane and my walking stick is always in the car. I wear runners most of the time, good quality runners because they give me the support I need. The back

Following the highly successful “Lion on the Lake” in Port Dover last year, Shadowland Theatre is returning to Norfolk County to stage another theatrical production. In collaboration with Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, the event will celebrate the area’s flora and fauna with a theatrical journey along the Forest Capital Trail behind the St. William’s Forestry Station on September 26, 27 and 28.

The outdoor theatre production will tell the story of a young girl who gets lost in the woods after having a fight with her parents about spending too much time in front of her television and computer and playing on her iPod and cell phone. In the woods she meets a series of animals that teach her about nature and by the end of the production she has a new appreciation for the natural world.

The focus of the event is on engaging the local community in

helping put the production together.

The first workshop to begin making the props and puppets, plan the music and performance, and learn stilt-walking was held last weekend.

However, more volunteers are needed for up-coming workshops, which will be held in August and September. These free workshops would be of interest to teens and adults with an interest in learning how to stage theatrical productions.
