ornstock donates Percussion Instruments to St. Cecilia’s for Intergenerational Drum Circle at Dover Cliffs

By Julie Swainston Birdtown Jamboree, sponsor of Cornstock Music Festival held at Wagon Wheel Produce, raises money to support various music arts programs for youth in the community.

This year they were contacted, and generously donated a variety of percussion instruments to Mr. Clark’s class at St. Cecilia’s in Port Dover.

An end of year drum circle was held for the Intergenerational Program between Dover Cliffs Long Term Care, and St. Cecilia’s grade 6/7 class on June 20th. In preparation for this event, an introductory Drum Circle session was arranged for Mr. Clark’s class, led by local certified Drum Circle facilitator, Wilma Montgomery, who spoke to the class on the benefits of drum circle participation during her presentation.

This class visits monthly throughout the year, and for their last visit in June, Dover Cliffs Program Manager Susan Helka, considered this event as it would be a wonderful experience for the residents and their class buddies to share.

When the big day arrived Mr. Clark and his students walked over to Dover Cliffs and helped bring the residents outside and arranged them in a circle on the lawn under the shade of the trees. Residents and students were provided with a variety of percussion instruments – shakers, tambourines, drums

and soon the air was filled with the sound of music as they followed the rhythms as Wilma led the group with various beats. With a show of her hand, old and young alike, knew when to begin and when to stop. It truly was amazing to watch and listen and see the smiles as they all enjoyed this experience with their buddies!

Wilma ended the session by starting with a certain beat and as they all got the beat she switched to another beat and then said “there is no wrong way of doing this if you like a certain beat or rhythm then do it”. She slowly walked around the circle switching the beats and listening to what the residents and students were doing and you could easily see by the look on her face she liked what she was hearing!

When you looked around the circle you could also see that the group were enjoying the music they were making! Then all too soon the hour was over and everyone enjoyed an ice cream treat before it was time to take the residents back indoors and the students and their teacher walked back to school in time to catch the bus.

The 9th annual Cornstock will be held on Sat and Sun Sept 7th and 8th rain or shine as local musicians come together once again to help raise money to benefit Children’s Arts Initiatives in the area. Please plan to attend.

By Dave Scott For a number of years now, I have spent my July 1st out at the Greens at Renton golfing in Yin’s Golf Day (their 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament).

The great part about the tourney is that I get to hang out with my friends and attempt to golf. Plus, the dinner is always fantastic and the course itself is pristine!

But about this golf thing… you see, I don’t know how else to put it… I am

terrible!

I do like to try, but to start with, most people tell me I golf the wrong way… I am a lefty… next up I have used the same clubs since I was sixteen… they are called Waterford Clubs… see, no one has even heard of them… and no they are not borrowed rentals. Perhaps it is the cheap pond balls I use… maybe it is my sight… maybe I should try my new glasses this year…

ake a "T rip to the T ip"

By Jean Mottashed Ever wonder what it would be like to zoom across Long Point Bay in a Zodiac? Well now's your chance to find out!

Long Point Eco Adventures and Captain Garrett Reid have partnered to launch an exciting new adventure called "Trip to the Tip" -- a four hour excursion to the end of Long Point and back in a 24 foot Zodiac.

Tours will leave from Pier 67 Restaurant in Turkey Point for the 27 km ride showcasing the natural beauty of the inner bay. Cruising past Bait Island, Ryerson's Island, Pottahawk Point and out beyond Bluff Bar, passengers will be treated to a close up view of the world's largest freshwater sand-spit known as Long Point.

Along the way, Captain Garrett will tell you about the lore and legends of the area, about wildlife and waterfowl, and the history of the Long Point Company. In between, he'll stop at strategic spots to let his passengers photograph and appreciate what is most definitely one of the most magnificent areas in Southern Ontario.

Garrett's background in wildlife and fisheries and his life-long love of nature make him... well... a natural for this job. He is fully licensed and registered with Transport Canada as a small vessel captain and has all the certification and training needed to provide a safe and enjoyable boating experience. With his ready smile and welcoming personality, this new business venture is bound to be a success.

The Zodiac itself is an interesting vessel. Garrett found it in a small Nova Scotian town on the Bay of Fundy and trailered it here in March of this year. Previously, it served as a search and rescue boat on the North Atlantic, and with its twin 150 horsepower motors, it can reach a top speed of 80 km per hour at full throttle. He can carry as many as 12 passengers at a time, including himself and one crew

member, and the ride is comfortable and smooth.

In addition to his "Trip to the Tip", Garrett also delivers a package that offers a birding tour in conjunction with the Long Point Bird Observatory Tip Research Station at the very end of the point.

Other packages are in the planning stages as well, he says.

Of paramount importance to him and his partners at Long Point EcoAdventures is their determination to treat this sensitive natural area with the utmost respect. "We want to leave as little a footprint as possible with no exploiting of Long Point," Garrett said.

Marsh Wren

By George Pond The cattail marshes on both sides of the Long Point causeway, or walking along the dykes near the viewing stand that you can see on the west side of the causeway is probably the best place in Norfolk to see and hear Marsh Wrens.

At one time Marsh Wrens were called Long-billed Marsh Wrens to differentiate them from Shortbilled Marsh Wrens. The names of both birds were changed to Marsh Wren and Sedge Wren, which better describes the habitat in which the two different birds are usually found.

The Marsh Wren is more often heard than seen.

Their song, which sounds like a sewing machine, is easy to pick out from the other sounds of the marsh. They usually nest in the cattails, building football shaped nests just above the waterline. Often they will build dummy or fake nests, probably to confuse would be predators.

Marsh Wrens are communal in their nesting habits and there will usually be many nesting pairs quite close to one another. They often sing hidden from view but occasionally pop up and sing from the top of a cattail or other exposed perch.

Before I had my hearing device I couldn’t hear the Marsh Wrens and when we were doing our annual Baillie Birdathon my friends would become quite frustrated with me as I would have to wait until one of the birds flew up so I could see it. Today I know why they were so upset as usually there are abundant nesting birds and the sewing machine songs are almost deafening.

Early mornings and evenings are the best times to hear or see the Marsh Wrens at Long Point. In fact I highly recommend that some quiet June evening, about 7:30 or 8 pm you go to Long Point and either walk along the dykes or simply stand for an hour on the viewing stand. It can be an incredible experience listening to and watching the many birds and other critters that inhabit the marsh. You could easily see or hear twenty different creatures of Nature’s unending store.

One early June morning I went to Long Point hoping to get some good nature photographs. I had nothing in particular in mind but decided

to walk the dykes for a possible turtle or bullfrog shot. Marsh Wrens were singing so I stood silently for several minutes. Suddenly one popped onto a cattail just in front of me and I was able to get several fairly good photos.

Vic Gibbons liked this pose. I love the setting that Vic has placed my bird in particularly the warm early morning background light. Shirley and I sometimes bird and photograph on the Bruce Peninsula. The cattails left from the winter past, the green reeds and especially the broken Birch branch remind me of the many small marshes that we like to visit there. Many

of them are alive with Marsh Wrens.

ConTainer planTs need Care Too! tend to expend a lot of time and energy in the summer on lawn care and Wegarden maintenance but often forget about our hanging pots and patio

planters.

To keep our planters looking fresh, we should regularly trim off yellowed, crispy or chewed leaves. Also, thoroughly deadhead spent blooms (nip off all flower parts, not just the petals); this prevents plants from producing seed, which triggers them to stop flowering. Those that benefit include dahlias, geraniums, heliotrope, lantanas, marigolds, nasturtiums most petunias, salvias, verbenas and zinnias.

Small-flowered plants such as bacopa, fibrous (wax) begonias, impatiens and portulaca are too time-consuming to deadhead and are often self-cleaning.

As the plants mature, you will find that their roots will fill the container, so they may need more frequent watering. And if you used a time-release fertilizer at planting time, it’s very likely now becoming depleted. Check moisture levels often, and begin feeding plants weekly with a water-soluble fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 15-30-15, diluted to half strength.

For specimens such as calibrachoa, petunias, sweet alyssum and trailing lobelia that have grown lanky, a shearing may be in order. Cut back stems by onethird, and then feed as above. Plants may look a bit sparse for a week or so, but they’ll soon put on new, more compact growth. Trailers, such as sweet potato vine or licorice vine, that have grown out of bounds benefit from a thinning. Cut back one-third to one-half of their stems to a few centimetres from the base of the plant.

You may find that over the course of the summer, repeated watering may alter the soil level or unmoor a few root balls (especially those of trailing plants, which get heavier as they grow longer). Carefully lift up foliage to see if any roots are exposed. If so, don’t try to push them back in; instead, cover them lightly with additional moist potting soil.

If a plant in a mixed container is dead, cut it off at its base to give its healthier neighbours room to spread. Doing this, rather than digging it out, avoids disturbing the roots of nearby plants.

You also may want to insert new plants into your planters, which will transform a summer container into one that will last through fall. In this case, carefully dig out the root ball with a narrow-bladed trowel.

By installing new plants with fall interest, such as small chrysanthemums, asters and pansies into your planters and hanging pots, you have then extended their beauty to last now over three seasons long!

chool’s Out

By Lirum Scott For those of you who have not realized it yet, I am in elementary school (Elgin Avenue Public School), which means that June 27 was my last day of school (for this year)! Sadly there are a lot of people from Elgin who will not be coming back next year and one is Mrs. Backus (our French teacher). She has been at Elgin for about 36 years and has done a magnificent job of educating many students in speaking French over those years. From all of the stories that I have heard and from the experiences that I, myself have been fortunate enough to have, I know that she is an organized yet fun teacher.

It does seem that I have the worst luck, not only will we loose our great teacher, but with her not here, my class may not be able to go to Québec… and on top of that, our first day of freedom and it rained all day… but at least I was lucky enough to have Mrs. Backus for seven great years.

Without school, I can sleep in, and stay up late, I won’t have to study for tests and quizzes and I have more time to type articles. There is only one downside to being out of school, which is the fact that it is much easier for your parents to assign you chores. Which is why I like to go outside and walk the dogs or climb a tree, or go down to my room after breakfast and stay there a while, where I can surf the web in peace… and it’s things like

I find the best part of summer is the sports… or the beach… or both, yep my favourite part of summer is kayaking. It is also a choice sport for many others including Mrs. Backus, my mom, my dad… there is a pretty long list of people and a lot of these people have been taught by my dad. He can do rolls and flips and go on rapids, there is only one group of people that I know of who can kayak better than my dad and that is the inventors of the kayak themselves… the Inuit. Not only can they do rolls and flips and go

on rapids but they can do most of this with there hands tied… but I will just stick to the basics this summer, my goal for the summer is to learn to do a roll in a kayak, which is where you would be flipped in a kayak and you would have to un-flip yourself. Also kayaking is a good thing to look into if you want to try some thing new because it is for everyone, and I don’t mean that in a one size fits all kind of way, I mean it in a, there’s many different ways of kayaking… rapids, paddle boarding, open water, doubles, race boats there’s even inflatable

kayaks… or maybe your thing is canoeing, biking or even skim boarding but there is no rush you have all summer to figure out what you think is the best part of summer.

Here are a few things you need to know when considering shopping for window coverings. With a little pre-planning many mistakes can be avoided.

1) Do your homework. Measuring is key.

Arm yourself with measurements of the window(s).

Draw out the window and its surrounding wall space. If it is an inside window treatment such as fixed blinds or shades, then measure inside the window frame as accurately as possible - the width and the length, as well as the depth of the window frame.

Take front of the window frame numbers, as well as, back of the window measurements. You would be surprised how different they can be especially if the windows are in an older home.

2) If window treatments are outside of the window, then take inside measurements, also as mentioned, outside measurements as well. You do this because it helps to determine where the rods will be hung above the window frame (to make the windows /room appear taller), but also how much room there is on either side of the window. Why is that so important? Well, if there is room beside the window, then it helps to determine how much, if any, stack back there can be. Some people like stack back and some

people don't care. Stack back is simply how far back off the window the drapes will clear, either totally or partially. If a person prefers to keep most of their window clear, then the drapes need a longer rod in order to do that. For those that do not care, I usually allow about 6” - 12” of wall clearance per side. This also affects the fabric yardage due to the fact that, if the drapes are clearing the window, then it takes more fabric for the drapes to meet in the centre when closed. Unless of course, you don't mind the bare rod showing when the drapes are closed because when the drapes are only covering the window area.

Other measurements like ceiling to floor, and bottom windowsill to floor are also necessary.

3) Look through magazines or books to get an idea of what you like.

Consider heading treatments that would suit your decor, your style.

For example, I would not generally recommend a grommet heading for drapery that will hang in a room that is laden with antiques. The overall look likely would not be suitable. There are better options.

Try and define your style.

4) Consider your budget, and be realistic. Window coverings are definitely an investment. They can be done in stages, if necessary.

However, pre- planning can help

avoid disappointments due to hasty decisions.

5) Make sure the drapery style will match your expectations. For example, I would not advise putting a tab top drapery treatment on an expandable rod if you are planning to open and close the drapes, twice daily, without getting totally frustrated. Tab tops are great for stationary treatments. Opening and closing requires pulling the tabs across the rod while trying to keep them from getting jumbled and caught on the rod. The chances of the tabs gliding smoothly are slim. The same can be said about putting grommet draperies, on an expandable rod.

6) Choosing your fabric colour can be very time consuming and here is where planning and research come in to play. Get colour swatches from a paint store. Get ones that match your wall colour, your carpet or flooring colour but also your furniture colours. Armed with those plus, your measurements, gives a good starting point and that is when I can help the rest of the way.

7) Lastly, consider upgrading your rods. They really are important in the whole scheme of things. This is not the place to wimp out. Buy the best you can buy, simply because,

they will, and should, last a long time. They can be moved to different rooms if ever they fall out of favour.

I have talked with many a home owner or designer who when selling their home, or flipping a home, who have invested in the window coverings and they have always claimed, that well made window coverings or treatments, are one of the first things the potential clients will try and negotiate for, when wanting to buy the home.

Although I spend some time in my backyard trying to make my gardens look good, I never seem to have the patience or time to do a really good job of it. However, I do enjoy looking at the results of other peoples’ efforts and so, after reading about an exhibit at the Montreal Botanical Gardens that is being held there this summer, I decided to make the trip to take a look. It was definitely worth the effort!

Mosaïculture is defined as the use of bedding plants to form patterns, an image, or a sculpture. It is a horticultural art that involves creating living artwork made mainly from a wide variety of plants with colourful foliage. Mosaïculture is different than topiary, which features mostly shrubs that have been pruned to create different shapes.

Mosaïculture borrows from three art forms: sculpture, painting and horticultural design. It has its origin in the flower beds or carpet beds of Renaissance gardens and requires precise attention to the variety of plants used, the density of planting, and pruning.

The creation of a mosaïculture sculpture begins with a drawing and a technical design. The metal structure must be built to sustain the weight of tonnes of wet soil and plants and to be able to withstand all types of weather conditions.

Some of the more complex and large structures even include a

built-in irrigation system. The cost of constructing a mosaïculture sculpture can range from $75,000 to $350,000.

Mosaiculture Internationales de Montréal (MIM) was created in 1998 to host the first-ever such exhibition in 2000. Its mission is “to promote gardening and horticulture as both an expression of new millennium values and a vital component of the urban landscape.”

This triennial competition also offers participants a chance to promote attractions in their own cities and/or countries.

Held in Montreal twice before, this event has also been staged in China and Japan. Now, a decade since it was last held in Canada, the event is back in Montreal.

The theme of this year’s Mosaïculture event is Land of Hope, with five sub-themes: interdependence of man and nature; humankind’s positive actions for the environment; species and ecosystems that are endangered or at risk; nature

in the urban environment; and beauty and fragility of life on earth. Participants were required to present a piece that reflected their culture and represented one or more of the five subthemes.

Walking along the two-kilometre trail that took me past the almost 50 sculptures, I was amazed at the intricacy and detail in the various sculptures and how well they were presented. Each sculpture, in my opinion, was truly a work of art and I am happy to say that not one of them was a disappointment. I am equally happy that I am not one of the judges of the event who will have the difficult choice of deciding the prize winners sometime in midJuly.

Although all the sculptures were noteworthy, the one that stands out in my mind is “The Bird Tree.”

This four-storey-high piece of art featured dozens of easily identifiable birds in a tree that is growing out of a pool of water. Fortunately, the organizers constructed a viewing platform that allowed visitors to

"Gorillas at Risk," Uganda see the sculpture with more than a worm’s-eye view. There were owls, hummingbirds, parrots, eagles, and many other birds on the tree, while below the tree an alligator and a turtle swam in the water.

Many of the sculptures featured species at risk including pandas, frogs, chimpanzees, and gorillas.

Others depicted legends involving nature, while still others highlighted attractions that can be seen in the area. Some represented true stories such as the sculpture entitled “A True Story,” which

comes from Shanghai, China.

The story happened in the late 1980s when a young girl who had loved red-crowned cranes all her life died while trying to save an injured crane. Another sculpture from Tokyo, Japan shows a dog waiting on a train platform. This story brought tears to my eyes!

The sculpture is titled “Hachiko, the Loyal Dog” and is inspired by an Akita Inu dog and a professor at a Tokyo university. Each day Hachiko would follow the professor to the train station and wait there
