By Dave Scott With all the excitement going on at the new Roulston’s Pharmacy on Donly Drive North in Simcoe, last Tuesday morning was especially thrilling as Roulston’s Pharmacy and RBC Dominion Securities teamed up to help six local charities to the tune of $500 each!

When I pulled in the parking lot, I saw co-owner, Mark Stephens,

out and about. He came over to greet me and we chatted about the ongoing work at the new Roulston’s Pharmacy and just how great the spacious new store looked.

It was easy to see both enthusiasm and relief in Mark’s face as he talked about the way everything had come together in such a short while. Mark made it very clear just how outstanding the staff have

By Dave Scott Tim Hortons does a lot of great work in communities all across the country… and one event I have always enjoyed covering is Camp Day… as usual I made sure to stop by and visit one of our local Tim Hortons and make a donation.

At the Queensway Simcoe location (by the way Cheryl and Grant the renovations look fantastic!)

Scotiabank Simcoe was on hand helping out with their version of Wheel of Fortune. For a donation to Camp Day you could spin the wheel and win a prize… cookie muffin, coffee, lunch… folks were having lots of fun spinning and winning.

Southwestern Ontario and lastly rounding out the group was Marilyn Davidson and Posie Ross from Community Living Access Support Services Norfolk & Haldimand (CLASS).

Aileen Bradshaw from Alzheimer Society was very pleased to be recognized and to be receiving the donation. She thanked Roulston’s and RBC Dominion Securities for their generosity.

She further explained that the donation would be going to help launch an Art Therapy Program.

Congratulations to all the recipients of the donation and kudos to RBC Dominion Securities and to Roulston's Pharmacy who despite these hectic times for themselves, still take the time to help others in our community!



Later that day on my way to London, I stopped by the Tim Horton’s in Norwich where the local OPP were busy collecting at the drive thru and washing windshields for a donation… it was nice to see folks all over being involved and helping to raise funds for Tim Hortons Camp Day. Here is an outline of just what Tim Hortons Camp day is all about according to the Tim Hortons website.

By Dave Scott We spent the weekend enjoying the great outdoors and were able to get out for a run, bike ride and a swim… the hat trick of workouts!

It was while I was running late Sunday that I remembered a story a few weeks back about a friend who was out running and a car had gotten a little too close to him as he ran… he was very upset and he let the driver know it.

These things happen from time to time and it is up to all of us to share the roadways and be respectful of each other… I have been asked before why, when there are

16,000 kids - who could otherwise not afford it - on the camping adventure of a lifetime. All children who attend one of the Foundation's six camps are selected from within the communities where Tim Hortons Restaurants are located. Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners work closely with local youth organizations and schools to select children, between the ages of nine and twelve, to attend a ten day summer camp session or seven day winter camp session.

As you can see when we all make a little donation on Camp Day it has a big impact on children all over the country!

Well the concrete sidewalks are actually harder on your knees and back.

There are some areas around the county that have paved shoulders, which are a blessing for everyone and appears to be more and more a part of road expansion. Plus there is such a great trail system in our area for running and biking, but sometimes you need an alternative… so the road it is.

When you are out running, biking or walking you have to be extra aware of what is going on around you. Today I want to flip the coin to the other side and say thank you to the 99% of the drivers who share the road. They are always courteous and give folks using foot or pedal power space as well.

They, the drivers slow down and pass safely… so to all you folks that do share the road… thank you… greatly appreciated!

PS. To runners, cyclists and walkers… we too are responsible for following the road rules and keeping the drivers safe as well… reflective gear and lights make it all that much easier for us to be visible and spotted earlier… have fun and safe travels this summer!

imcoe Athlete Chosen for World Championship Team!!

By Jean Mottashed Simcoe's Kelsey DePaepe is passionate about dragon boat racing. You can see it in her sparkly eyes and her bright smile when she talks about what sports, and specifically dragon boat racing, means to her.

As an 18 year old University of Guelph freshman on the varsity

dragon boat team, Kelsey's long standing love of sports dates back to her high school years and beyond, playing on various Norfolk area rep hockey and soccer teams.

But this year is shaping up to be something really special for Kelsey.

She was chosen to crew in the under 23-year-old division of the Canadian Women's Dragon Boat team at the

Dragon Boat racing is one of the oldest racing sports in the world.

2013 World Championships taking place in Szeged, Hungary in July.

If she performs well, she may also have the opportunity to race on the mixed team.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity," Kelsey said. "Team sports are all about the camaraderie, working as a team unit and making close friends."

After graduating from Holy Trinity last year, Kelsey chose the University of Guelph to pursue a major in Studio Art and a minor in Biology -- a combination even she says is unusual. But once settled into Guelph, she quickly realized she needed more participation in sports activities than what the

Dragon boat racing originated in China in the fourth century B.C. It requires a crew of twenty people paddling in sync to move the boat, with a drummer in front and a steersperson in back. Top physical conditioning is a must with upper body, hips and core strength playing an important factor in winning races. Each position in the boat is carefully chosen with the front two crew members setting the pace for the race, the middle crew providing the power, and the back crew capitalizing on that power by getting a good connection with the water. Kelsey says mental stamina, as well as the ability to work as a team to stay in stroke are also key to successful teams.

The most amazing things about Kelsey are her energy, her confidence and her drive to succeed.

She had virtually no experience with this sport when she took it up last fall, and because of her passion and hard work, she will be at the top of her game, along with the best athletes in the country, competing for the prestigious Nations Cup. Looking out of our rain-streaked windows during those five days two weeks ago in which, according to our rain gauge, we received four inches of rain, I noticed some bright orange blobs of colour on some trees out on the hill behind the house.

They were very noticeable and I was sure they had not been there the day before, so, being naturally curious, I went out the next time there was a break in the showers to investigate.

The blobs were actually a stringy fungus with a spaghetti-like texture known as Cedar Apple Rust and was only on our Eastern Red Cedar trees (Juniperus virginiana), commonly referred to as junipers. Though the fungi do little damage to the junipers, they can affect the leaves and fruit of apple trees by leaving leathery spots of discolouration. This parasitic fungus has an interesting life cycle in that it must jump between juniper and apple hosts.

On the juniper trees it appears as wood galls that look like they are part of the tree, which, in fact, they are, as the tree itself makes the gall, acting on instructions from the fungus, somewhat like cancer cells telling animal cells to produce a tumourous mass.

The galls are covered in sharp woody projections that are actually spouts or holes. After a good soaking rain, such as the one we had two weeks ago, a vivid orange tentacle projects from the spout.

With several of these fungi on each tree, it looked like the juniper had collided with a swarm of sea anemones. Touching one reminded me of either wet and cold cooked spaghetti or gummy worms; spongy but somewhat firm. These tentacles are known as spore horns and consist of the fungus spores.

The two forms of the parasite, the galls on the junipers and the leathery spots on the apple trees are different stages of a single life cycle. The orange tentacles release spores that are carried on the wind to, hopefully for the fungus, find an apple host on which to continue its life. In addition to cultivated apples, other deciduous hosts for the fungus include ornamental crab, pear, quince, mountain ash, chokeberry, Juneberry, and hawthorn. The fungi live within the tissues of their hosts, but are unable to spread from juniper to juniper or from one broadleaf host to another,

but must alternate between the two kinds of plants. If either host is not present, the fungus cannot spread and will eventually die out.

Although no serious harm usually results from the presence of the rust fungi on junipers, if they are heavily infected, the trees may become unsightly because of the many brown galls and dead branch tips. On the broadleaf hosts, the rust fungus invades the leaves and fruits, causing them to become discoloured and deformed. A different type of spore is formed on the underside of the infected leaves and on the fruits. These spores are once again carried on the wind to spread the fungus to nearly junipers, thus completing the life cycle.

Researching this topic also answered a couple of other questions I had had for some time: Why do only some junipers have berries?

How did these junipers come to grow here so randomly since we had never planted this type of tree?

Why do some of these trees seem to “smoke” when you hit them? I discovered that Juniper trees are either male or female and only the females have the blue berries on them. Birds eat these berries, each of which has one to four seeds inside. The seeds pass through the bird’s gut and are “planted” as the birds do their business in other areas, thus scattering the seeds for the tree, explaining why there are

junipers sprouting up all over the property.

Male trees, on the other hand, have tiny tan-coloured “cones” on the branches. These are pollen-bearing structures that are about the size of a sesame seed. The pollen is released very early in the spring as junipers are one of the first trees to flower every year. When the pollen is ready to be released, swatting the branches makes it look like the tree is smoking.

It’s that time of year again, the leaves are green, the flowers are blooming, and the birds are back... but so are all of the bugs. Of all of the bugs my least favourite are the ticks, not even mosquitoes and black flies come close (and those are pretty bad), but at least you can put on some bug spray for that, where as ticks just latch on and feast… but my parents always taught me to look on the bright side of things, you know, “The glass is half full, not half empty” that sort of thing,

but if you ask me, ticks should not count for that sort of thing, I mean they are tiny little blood sucking arachnids that can give you or your pets Lyme disease. Now, don’t get the incorrect idea about them, I mean they’re bad and all, but only if not treated right (if you notice a reddish bull’s-eye on the skin where a tick is or was on you or your pet then you should contact someone to make sure that it is not from Lyme disease). Like I said before, if treated right, they’re not anything to lose sleep over. That however, was something I have done for a while. For about three years of my life, I was under the impression that ticks were “evil” and it was the recent increase of

the tick population in the area that influenced me to research them on some reliable sources like Discovery Channel’s website, Fonthill Animal Hospital’s website and local veterinarian offices, and what I found out was that ticks are not “evil” although they’re not the good guys either, so what side are they on you ask, that is for you to decide. Lets get the facts here; there are three types of ticks in the area, the deer tick (or black legged tick), the American dog tick and the brown dog tick, which are more common than the deer ticks, but deer ticks can carry Lyme disease even though not all do. Even if that tick does happen to have Lyme disease most of the time yours or

So the chances of Lyme disease affecting your life are very slim.

In 2007 a study showed that this disease affected only 27 out of 94,928 Canadian dogs, and that is without putting medicine into the equation. So reflecting back on, looking on the bright side about ticks and bugs, I would say that I’m pretty glad that I live in a place like Norfolk where we don’t have big bug issues and even if we did, we can medically and economically treat them. As for that thing about ticks being on the good side or the bad side, well I believe that they’re not on any side, that they are just trying to survive.
