By Dave Scott When I find myself getting lost in a book I usually can’t wait to tell someone about it. Poor Monica usually has to hear all about the latest scribbling of some author she has never heard of, the bio of some crazy rock star who has done it all, or perhaps a sports hero who is a little too full of himself. This past week a book of a different sort entered my life and I told my wife very little about it. There was a very good reason for my silence; the book, titled Flee, Fly, Flown, had actually not been released yet. Its author had allowed me the honour of reading it before it even hit the shelves…

From the get go the book took me in and soon the main characters Audrey, Lillian and Rayne had me locked in.

This story begins in, of all places, a nursing home, but be prepared, Lillian and Audrey will lead you on an adventure you won’t soon forget. This tale tackles one of the issues prevalent in today’s world, Alzheimer’s.

The story allows its readers to experience what families must go through and at the same the time, these two wonderful women help us laugh, educate us and remind us that we may grow old but our dreams never do!

I cannot tell you much more about the book, so lets talk a little about this talented author who wrote this eloquent book.

Who is Janet Hepburn (née Greenslade)? Growing up in Port Dover, she admits she was a shy kid who loved to read and write poetry. It made her feel good inside. She excelled in school, worked hard and found out more about herself as her confidence and writing grew. Her eyes sparkled as she reflected upon her youth; she and a friend would climb aboard a bus to Hamilton and spend the day at a used bookstore. She would become engulfed in the poetry of the day, purchasing books and reading all the way back to Dover.

As with many of us, marriage and kids took over. Her passion for reading and writing never left, it just took a side step for a while. Her kids were her priority and that was all the joy she needed at the time.

About ten years ago, with her kids approaching twenty and her husband’s support, it was time to revisit her passion for writing. She decided to take some writing courses and follow her dream. It wasn’t long before the poetry was flowing and the ideas were endless…

By Dave Scott His name is River… and the long red hair served a purpose… to help others! A little over two years ago this young man took it upon himself to let his hair grow out. The reason was simple to help others, to have his hair donated to make into a wig and help kids who had lost their hair because of cancer or other related diseases.

River admits it wasn’t easy, he took some taunts from kids at school, but it never stopped him. His mom told him it would be fine to cut it off early, but River stuck to his decision.

An appointment was made a few weeks back at the Gay Blade in Port Dover and the ponytail was cut and bagged. The day I caught up with River he was getting ready to head to Brantford to drop off his hair at Inspirational Hearts, which will pass the hair along to Angel Hair.

When Janet’s dad passed away and her mom’s health began to fail due to the struggles with Alzheimer’s, Janet’s focus shifted to her mom’s health. Her drive to be the best writer she could be continued when time allowed.

Her trips to the nursing home to visit her mom became a focal point of Janet’s day. The emersion into the environment began to become entangled with her everyday life. She didn’t know at the time that her observations, experiences, conversations and the daily routine of it all

loss solutions to financially disadvantaged children in Canada who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment. Using hair that is generously donated to the program, the foundation can create wigs and hair systems and provide them at no cost to the child’s family.

It takes 10-12 donated ponytails to make one hair prosthesis and $800 to $1000 is budgeted by the foundation to cover manufacturing and related costs.

River’s red hair is also a hard colour to find so again all the more reason for his red locks to help someone else.

River told me that to celebrate the donation he and his family went out to dinner at Ming’s in Port Dover.

By Dave Scott Although spring has officially arrived, winter is hanging on with all of its might… Everyone is looking for that ray of sunshine, just a glimpse of the sun’s warmth to wash over our well-being.

At last my friends; the Cider Keg’s screen door has swung open this past weekend for another season. So in I walked checking out the many different types of cider neatly lining the shelves, the jars of jam and condiments at the ready to engulf our taste buds. The staff was busy starting their spring tune up for another season,

organizing and familiarizing themselves with all they do during the day. As I wandered the store I began to sense that spring was in the air.

I looked down at the ice cream cooler… sooner rather than later we would be back to melt away the day’s heat with a cider-slushie or an ice cream cone… mmm. It won’t be long till the storefront is bursting with fresh produce from our local farmers. Ah yes the warmer weather is near. As the screen door closes gently behind me, I look to the sky waiting for the sun to appear.

Not yet, but with the Cider Keg open the sun isn’t far behind.

We have been very fortunate to have a great circle of friends, but we want to grow that network and get local businesses, service clubs, schools and families talking about how good it feels to help make your community a stronger place.

“I am very proud of some of the fun, different things we have done in recent years to make fundraising less intimidating, more rewarding, and convenient. Instead of signing permissions, bussing kids to the lanes and recruiting school chaperones we have the ability to convert a school’s gym into a virtual bowling alley! Our actual bowling event has evolved into six days and two locations so that teams have the options and can make the choice most convenient for them. If a business cannot attend Bowl For Kids Sake but they want to contribute we brainstorm with them to find a way to make it possible. our president, vice president, secretary and our press reporter.

Congratulations to Alex Hubinger the club president, the clubs vice president Colin Vanrooy, Chrissy Boyer the clubs secretary and to Katelyn Haywood the clubs press reporter. The first meeting of Maple Syrup Club started with Alex the club president leading his fellow

4-Her’s in the 4-H pledge. Then club leader, Wendy Lamb gave us instructions on what we’re going to be doing at this meeting. Then other 4-H leader Terry took a group of kids to show them how to drill the hole for the spile properly while leader Wendy took another group of kids into the shack and talked about how they make maple syrup.

Then the 4-H members walked in a maple bush and drilled holes and hammered the spile in the tree and then put the jugs where the maple

syrup will run into them, from the tubes that were hooked up to the spile. Each member did their own tree. All of the kids learned that depending on the diameter of the tree, that this can tells us how many spiels we can put into the tree. The first meeting of the maple syrup club came to an end the 4-H members left the maple bush a little on the chilly side. The meeting was then adjourned by the club president, Alex.

mmmm maple syrup is the best! On Saturday March 2nd, the time of the meeting was 1 pm to 4 pm, the 4-H members of the maple syrup club gathered at the sugar bush once again. The club president Alex started the meeting off by leading the 4-H members in the pledge. At this meeting there were twelve members present and two club leaders present.

Club leader Wendy then requested for the club’s secretary Chrissy to read Her Secretary report, Chrissy then read her report. After all the new business and old business was taken care of by the president the 4-H members then walked

through the sugar bush and checked all of the jugs that they rigged up at the last meeting. The kids then headed back to the shack to test real maple syrup versus store bought maple syrup.

The kids never came to a solid decision of who actually won but they had fun testing it! The 4-H members then went over stuff that they need to complete before the next meeting that is held on Saturday March 16th 2013, the kids were told they had to complete a chart that showed weather patterns and sap flow every day till their next meeting, the kids were strongly reminded they had to have it done and present at the meeting

with them. Club leader, Wendy also said they had to complete a: Me Page in the book they write their notes for their achievement Day on April 6th 2013. Club member were given a note stating the dates of meetings and achievement day and what is expected to be brought to the meetings. The club leaders Wendy and Terry then spoke to the kids about opportunities that the 4-H kids can get involved with! By this time in the meeting it was 4 pm club president, Alex then got the okay to dismiss the meeting.

rip… drip… drop look at the maple sap! Wow, look how much sap is in this jug. On March 16th 2013 the Norfolk 4-H Maple Syrup club had their third meeting. This meeting was held at the Sugar Bush in Lynedoch from 1 pm till 4 pm. The roll call for this meeting was: If you were a tree what kind of tree would you be? This roll call had many answers because it depended on the 4-H member. This meeting had a topic which was: collecting the sap. Leader Wendy then gave club leader Alex the thumbs up to lead the members in the 4-H pledge. Alex then requested the secretary, Chrissy to read the

minutes of the previous meeting. Attendance was taken 19 members were present at this meeting. Wendy then requested homework from the kids that they were told to do. Club leader, Terry Boyer then spoke to the kids on how they were collecting the maple sap, he gave a demonstration and then the kids quickly got to work. Terry showed the kids how he empties the maple sap into the 250 gallon holding tank. The kids then walked into the sugar shack to warm up and to learn about the boiling method of the sap. Each member then got a chance to try a spoon full of fresh syrup that was just boiling

down. After the 4-H members were educated about the boiling of maple syrup, another of the club’s leaders, Diana Haywood shared fresh maple sugar candies and discussed how they were made. Club leader Wendy then spoke to the members and introduced a new assignment for the club to do, which was to cook or bake something but use maple syrup as an ingredient or an ingredient substitute and make something to bring and share at the next meeting. Club president Alex then dismissed the 4-H members and the meeting as it was 4 pm. Mmmm… I can’t wait till the next meeting.

Easter, spring and re-birth

Although Easter is a Christian celebration that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, some aspects of our modern Easter holiday pre-date Christianity and are based in nature.

The word Easter comes from an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre. As the Christian religion spread throughout Europe in the early years of Christianity, missionaries noticed that the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus coincided with pagan springtime celebrations, which emphasized the triumph of life over death. Many of the symbols of these celebrations were gradually absorbed into Christian Easter observances.

Unlike Christmas Day, which is always celebrated on the same day, the date for Easter changes from year to year. The calculation of when Easter is celebrated each year is based on the vernal, or spring, equinox and the cycles of the moon. Before 325 AD, Easter was celebrated on the

Sunday immediately following the first astronomical full moon after the vernal equinox. In 325, however, astronomers were able to approximate the dates of all the full moons in future years for the Western Christian churches, thus establishing a table of Ecclesiastical Full Moon dates.

These dates were used to determine the Holy Days on the Ecclesiastical Calendar. On this calendar, the Paschal, or Passover, Full Moon is the first Ecclesiastical full moon after March 20, which was the date of the vernal equinox in 325.

Easter in Western Christianity (as opposed to Orthodox Christianity) is always celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, the occurrence of which can vary as much as two days from the date of the actual full moon.

Many of the most common symbols of Easter – the Easter bunny, eggs, and chicks – have their origins in the pagan celebrations of spring and re-birth. The exact origin of the Easter bunny is not clear, but hares and rabbits, well known as prolific procreators, have been symbols of fertility and new life since ancient times. The inclusion of the hare into Easter customs appears to have originated in Germany, where tales were told of an "Easter hare" who

laid eggs for children to find. The Easter bunny was brought to North America in the 1700s by German immigrants. At that time, children made nests in which the Easter bunny could place its coloured eggs. The nests were eventually replaced by decorated baskets and the eggs are now more often made of chocolate.

The egg itself is an ancient symbol of new life and has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring.

The decorating and colouring of eggs may have come about because eggs were a forbidden food during Lent, so eggs laid during that time were often boiled or otherwise preserved and people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of Lent and then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

Butterflies are also considered a symbol of Easter as the three-stage life cycle, according to Christian beliefs, mirrors the life of Jesus: the caterpillar represents His life on earth, the cocoon stage signifies His death and temporary absence from the living world, and the emergence and flight of the butterfly replicates Jesus’ resurrection and rise toward the heavens.

Anna Atkinson is a singer, actor, instrumentalist, and writer currently based in Toronto. In June 2011, she released Mooniture, her debut CD recorded with producer Brent Bodrug, to critical acclaim. It was featured on the Toronto Star's Anti-Hit List, and continues to receive frequent play on CBC radio, in particular The Signal and As It Happens.

Since 2010 Atkinson has been a member of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Silas has twice been the recipient of "The Pat Feely Senior Guitar Trophy" from the Brantford Kiwanis Music Festival, the Senior Guitar Trophy from the Norfolk Musical Arts Festival, and first place performer in the Rotary Burlington Music Festival. Silas is a member of the Guitar Society of Brantford, and performs regularly with the Francisco Tarrega ensemble. He hopes to pursue his love of music at University of Ottawa this fall, studying the guitar, and French.
