By Dave Scott It is always fun to hang out in the sports section at Canadian Tire Simcoe. You can wander the aisles, checking out hockey equipment, soccer gear, fishing equipment, lifejackets, camping equipment, just about anything for the sports minded person. On this day though, I had to focus on taking a photo. With the help of Emily Dikdan (granddaughter of Mary Taylor, owner of Canadian Tire Simcoe) we had a little fun before the shoot. Emily went around and gathered a few choice sporting items, after all, the photo and article were going to be about Jumpstart.

For those who don’t know what Jumpstart is, the following from their website is an excellent explanation… Canadian Tire Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers, so children can participate in organized sport and recreation.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged kids participate in organized sport and recreation. They work in partnership with other local non-profit organizations to discreetly identify kids with the greatest need in their community. Canadian Tire Jumpstart then covers registration, equipment and/or transportation costs to help them participate in a sport or recreational activity of their choice.

Since their launch in 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has given more than 540,000 kids

Well on this day, our photo was going to take place with Mary and her granddaughter, Emily, and a couple of really great guys from Scotiabank Simcoe. The gentlemen, Jeff Schaus and John Winser, were presenting Mary with a cheque for $5,000 towards our local Jumpstart Chapter.

The donation is part of the fundraising campaign that started when Mary set out on a 500 km bike odyssey to raise funds for Jumpstart.

Mary told me her total raised for the Simcoe Chapter has now approached $25,000. To the local kids who cannot afford to get involved in sports that is music to their ears!

A quick thanks to Emily for all her help with the shoot… it is always enjoyable to see a family based local business!

ood for Thought

By Dave Scott In today’s society we tend to look at folks who have nothing and feel sorry for them. Whether we like to admit it or not, we often ignore the problem as if it does not exist. A lot of us make a yearly donation around Christmas, we feel good about it, get caught up in our busy lives once again, and forget for the rest of the year.

I did a story a couple of years ago about the Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen in Simcoe. At the time I remember interviewing a couple of guys who told me about how they had fallen on hard times. I knew one of the guys personally and it hit home just how quickly life could turn on you. How swiftly you could be in a situation where you needed help with the most basic things to survive.

Last week I stopped by the Soup Kitchen to take a photo of a donation of $2,500 that was being received from the Norfolk Masons Lodge No 10. I scanned the room to see if the two fellas I had interviewed were there… but neither was.

I wondered again what was up in their lives. My mind flashed back to the interview a few years earlier when I asked the question to the one fella, Where do you see yourself in five years? The answer was a simple one… Dave I just try and figure out where I can get food tomorrow…

There were no dreams in his eyes, only survival. The drive and the will had been broken, the spirit still had a flicker but it needed help to be reignited. The folks who use the kitchen come from all walks

of life, young and old, men and women.

There has been a steady increase over the last few years of young people using the kitchen.

The kitchen is open Mondays and Thursdays. There are usually about fifty people who stop by for a meal to help them get through the week.

Some of the folks who use the kitchen do odd jobs around town for a little extra money. They laugh and joke around the tables as they eat and hang out… they support one another. The food along with this camaraderie may simply be what keeps them going.

It cannot be easy, but they try and make the best of it. They will have their meal and leave, head back to the street or their oneroom apartment somewhere around town… trying to figure out where their next meal may come from.

I get my photo and chat with Ken Kowalsky and Steve Holodinsky about the great work they do at the kitchen to help others. They remind me that it’s not just them; it’s the many volunteers who come each week to cook and help out. Where would we be without them?!

Later that day when I enter Sobeys I remind myself how much I take for granted, being able to just go buy food when I need it. I feel a little guilty… I should not… but I do.

on’t Say a Word

By Dave Scott One of the cool things about my job would be meeting all of the great people. You get to hear about their lives, their families and their futures.

At the end of the day I always feel like I have made a new friend. Whenever I see the person later on in a different setting, I always try and make sure to say hi.

Last week I was grabbing a coffee at a local shop and I knew the older couple in front of me from an interview a while back. They didn’t see me, their backs were towards me and I was about to say hi… but something stopped me… and I thought I would just watch them for a moment.

They stood side by side glancing at the display case for a treat, like I am sure they have done hundreds of times before. Perhaps it was their time of the day to get

out of the house and enjoy some sweets. You knew just by watching them that they had been the love of each other’s lives for a long time… the gentle ease that their conversation flowed, the little joke to the girl behind the counter, the way they looked at each other when they talked… I mean, they looked at each other when they talked.

The gentleman pulled out his wallet to pay, his wife looked for just the right spot where they could sit and take in each other’s company.

The person at the counter handed me my coffee… I quickly turned away, not to be seen and slipped out the door. I could truly understand their moment and appreciate it… they understood the importance of time together and I was happy that I did not interrupt and say hi.

orfolk Association for Community Living to Host Norfolk County's Most Outrageous Fundraiser

Norfolk County residents could be a contestant on their favourite classic game show at the first annual Can You Dig It? Game Show Extravaganza. The event is presented by Scotiabank Port Dover, and is a fundraiser for the Norfolk Association for Community Living (NACL). All proceeds will help NACL to continue to provide quality supports to people with developmental disabilities.

The extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at Lighthouse Festival Theatre.

Audience members will be selected at random for a chance to win one of over 100 fabulous prizes while choosing between door number one, two, or three playing Let's Make a Deal; compete against each other during segments of The Newlywed Game and Match Game; win prizes for their unique talents - or ability to make a spectacle of themselves - as contestants on The Gong Show; and play pricing games featuring Norfolk County products in the tradition of The Price is Right. In the spirit of Let’s Make a Deal, prizes will also be awarded for the most attention-getting costumes.

Members of Team Scotia and individuals who receive supports from NACL will also team up to help run the show.

NACL’s fundraising committee is confident that the event will be a fun, memorable occasion.

“The committee knew it had to come up with something ambitious that had never been done in this community before,” said Ann Engell, Chair of NACL’s Board of Directors. “A lot of time and effort has gone into developing Can You Dig It?, and we are so proud to bring this exceptional event to Norfolk County. We hope the community is as excited to participate in these classic game shows as we are.”

NACL was one of the original five Community Living organizations incorporated in Ontario; there are now 400 similar agencies throughout the province.

Series Boasts Big-Name Acts!

The Spring Concert Series at the Waterford Old Town Hall boasts a stunning line-up of artists and is set to once again put Norfolk County on the concert-going map! Following on the heels of the Mumford and Sons excitement in Simcoe, the Old Town Hall series will showcase four Canadian artists with international fame. Starting April 6 and running through to the end of May 2013, the four-concert series is presented in conjunction with Left Field Presents promoters Claire Senko and Sara Moody Veldhuis.

"We are over-the-moon with excitement about the line-up we have for our third-ever concert series", says Claire Senko. "We can't believe these artists are coming to us!"

“Yes!” agrees Sara Moody Veldhuis; "It's been a long set of negotiations, but we are thrilled with the lineup!"

Who are the artists you ask? Power-house headliners Martha Wainwright and Hawksley Workman will be at the OTH on April 26 and May 31 respectively. The captivating singersongwriter Craig Cardiff kicks off the series on April 6 and British Columbia's The Bills finally return to Ontario and to Waterford on May 5.

"There is something for everyone in this series", comments Moody Veldhuis, "and we are proud to be able to offer 4 concerts catering to a wide variety of musical tastes!"

Noted as one of Canada's most impressive musical workhorses, singer-songwriter Craig Cardiff, who hails originally from Waterloo Ontario, is known for his soft vocals and live-looping in his performances. His songs are landscapes that expose the human condition; his performances mix story and song and blur the line between performer and audience. Craig will be at the Old Town Hall on Saturday, April 6.

Martha Wainwright, whose birthright is firmly entrenched in Canadian songwriting royalty with parents Kate McGarrigle (The McGarrigle Sisters), singer-songwriter-actor-father Loudon Wainwright III, and singer-songwriter-brother Rufus Wainwright will be at the Old Town Hall on Friday, April 26. Wainwright, whose raw, edgy songwriting tells tales of love and loss, has been shaped in the last few years by the passing

of her beloved mother and the birth of her first child, a son. With a hugely expressive voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, she has headlined around the globe in venues like England's Royal Albert Hall to critical acclaim. In a show, which can be both in-your-face and tender, thoughtprovoking and wistful, Martha Wainwright is a songwriter who always demands much from her audience, and whose performances never disappoint!

On Sunday May 5, folk-roots-world music quintet The Bills return to Norfolk County after a 9-year hiatus, and we say: "Yes, Please!" - the title of their new CD which they will have in tow that night. Courtesy of the Port Dover Midgets On Sunday, March 10th the Port Dover Midget 1 House League Team, sponsored by Dr. Tom Sartor, travelled to Norwich to play the Burford Midgets for the O.M.H.A. Southern Counties Inter-Town “A” Division Championship.

Burford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, however Jordan Ferris, the team captain, assisted on a goal by Austin Carr to tie the game. Less than 40 seconds later Ferris scored a goal of his own assisted by Austyn Merrill, and early in the second he and Brent Gamble assisted on a goal

by Lucas Fess to put Port Dover ahead 3 – 1.

Burford was not about to let the game get away from them and scored twice to tie the game at 3 all. Before the second period was over, Austin Carr scored his second goal of the game from Jacob Wilson to put us

ahead, and midway through the third period Carr completed his hat trick on an assist from Daniel Czikk.

Burford scored again on the power play to get back within one, however Austyn Merrill scored a beautiful short-handed goal unassisted to put Port Dover up 6 – 4. The Port Dover boys then kept Burford off the score sheet and were rewarded with the League Championship.

Write Yourself a Letter

his is a good way to have a relaxed chat with oneself; something to write on and with is all that is needed - a scribbler is a handy writing pad. Sitting at the kitchen table or somewhere that is comfortable is still the way that many seniors like to ‘think things out’. The computer is just not the same! By starting with Dear Me, the chat flows on and the thoughts are easily put down. The letterwriter relaxes and does not hesitate to write out feelings - nice and not so nice, positive and negative.

Surprisingly, when using this way how much easier it is to ‘see’ things, to ‘think’ them out and how good one feels after sitting down and

writing. Maybe the setting and the drink of something helps too! Many will remember this ‘method’ is not new; the diary was a popular item many years ago and was used by many teen-agers, especially girls.

It was often a gift for a birthday or graduation.

After writing, it is a good idea to put the ‘letter’ away and bring it out several days or even weeks later.

What was written can seem a good ‘solution’ or not at all appropriate.

The problem can even seem not at all important. Time does wonders and reflecting on one’s letter really shows how time can change the situation. Having a chat via letter can be so helpful!

Now is a good time to go back to the title; the words are also part of a popular song of long ago. The song starts like this - I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you, a lot o’ kisses… see how far your memory can go and sing the tune too.

Now that the mind is warmed, here is a quiz to do.

The list has places where physical activities can be carried on - rink… court… gym… track… field. Now list at least two sports for each of them. This is good exercise for the imagination!

here is no doubt in my mind that humour heals. I have read study after study that documents this and I have personally witnessed this wonderful healing effect in almost thirty years of clinical practice. This dreary time of year, winter is in twilight but spring has not quite sprung is the perfect time to introduce a good strong dose of humour into your life and your relationships. One of the relationships that show a great deal of strain after a long cold winter is the caregiver/caregiving dynamic.

How does humour heal? Research shows that laughter may boost the immune system and circulatory system, improve oxygenation, relax muscles, and stimulate the release of endorphins in the body, which may help to relieve pain.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started; these can be used by any type of caregiver, paid or unpaid, relative or friend. The key is to create laughter, laugh out loud laughter is the best, chuckles work and even a grin will get the ball rolling. A word of warning though, laughter is pretty addictive; once you get started you may not be able to stop. Before I roll out the Humour ‘Top Ten’ I will share the Senility Prayer.

God, grant me the Senility To forget the people I never liked anyway, The good fortune To run into the ones I do,

And the eyesight To tell the difference.

1. Watch a You Tube clip of The Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, “I Love Lucy” or any clip with physical comedy.

2. Read your loved one a funny story. Try reading it in a silly voice.

3. Put on some music and host a dance party. This works for a wheelchair-bound or bed-bound individual as well. Repetitive movements can also be considered exercise, if done safely.

4. Make some funny faces. Buy a clown nose.

5. Reminisce about favourite childhood stories with your loved one.

6. Laugh. Laugh for ten seconds. Laugh as hard as you can without injuring yourself.

7. Look at some old family photographs together. Do any patterns emerge? Is Uncle

Joe always wearing a plaid shirt? Did Great Aunt Lorraine pose in every picture?

8. Host a surprise party for your loved one.

It doesn’t have to be a birthday or holiday to invite people to gather together in celebration of love and life.

9. Put a silly picture in a frame near your family member that makes him or her smile.

10. If your loved one is an animal lover search the internet for cute animal pictures that will put a smile on their face.

ne of the most common things that CPAP users forget about once they have been using CPAP for a while is regular cleaning and care for your CPAP. While parts of your

caring for them properly will ensure they reach their proper lifespans.

What to Clean Daily: The seal of the mask is the one item that should get cleaned daily. This is recommended because your mask seal sits on your face all night long collecting body oils and skin cells. This can be done with mild soap and water or CPAP Wipes. This is the only item that needs to get cleaned daily.

What to Clean Weekly: The hose, water chamber and entire mask need to be cleaned on a weekly basis.

The hose should be submersed in warm soapy water, soak, rinse with water and hang to dry. There is also a brush available to assist cleaning

the tube. The water chamber should also be submersed in warm soapy water, soak, rinse with water and hung to dry. Some water chambers are dishwasher safe for the top rack of your dishwasher. If you are not sure if your water chamber is dishwasher safe, check with your vendor. The entire mask should also be cleaned weekly, including the seal, frame and headgear. This can also be submersed in warm soapy water, soak, rinsed with water and hung to dry. It is not recommended to wash headgears in the washing machine on a regular basis.

What to Clean With: Mild liquid soaps are the best to clean with.

This includes many forms of liquid hand soaps and dish soaps. CPAP cleaning wipes and spray cleanser

are also available.

What Not to Clean With: Avoid rubbing alcohol or products containing it, because it is a drying agent and will dry out the mask silicone and break it down faster.

It is also recommended to avoid Lemon based dish soaps because the lemon properties can break down the silicone faster as well.

Soaps that have large amounts of moisturizer or are scented are also best if avoided. Also avoid laundry detergents.

Discovering Birds in Norfolk with George and Vic

Snowy Owl

By George Pond Snowy Owls do not nest in Norfolk County and the only time we have a chance to see them is during the winter months when a few might drift this far south to over winter in our area.

A few, one to five or more, are usually spotted around Long Point during the annual Christmas Bird Count. They nest on the Tundra in extreme northern Canada. Snowy Owls hunt by day as well as night and when they show up in our area they can often be found during the day sitting on the ground or a fence post or even on a building.

Females and Juvenile birds are heavily barred

with black spots, the heaviest being on the younger birds. Old males are sometimes pure white.

We like to drive the back roads of Norfolk and Haldimand in the winter looking for these majestic birds of prey and are sometimes lucky.

We have found them around Long Point and Turkey Point and along the Lake Erie shoreline east of Port Dover. Keep you eyes open from November to March.

I photographed this bird, on a rocky outcrop north of Sudbury and was pleased when Vic Gibbons decided to paint it in the same habitat.

By MARG WERDEN Pesticides continue to affect wildlife

Fifty years after Rachel Carson published her ground-breaking book Silent Spring condemning the use of pesticides, especially DDT, wildlife continues to be affected by the use of pesticides.

A recent study by a Canadian toxicologist is challenging the widely-held assumption that habitat loss is the primary cause of the decline in grassland birds.

The study conducted by Dr. Pierre Mineau, recently retired from Environment Canada, and Mélanie Whiteside of Health Canada over a 23-year period (1980 to 2003), identifies toxic pesticides as the most likely leading cause of the population declines.

The use of pesticides was just one of five potential factors that the study examined to try to determine the causes of grassland bird declines:

change in cropped pasture such as hay or alfalfa production, farming intensity or the proportion of agricultural land that is actively cropped, herbicide use, overall insecticide use, and change in permanent pasture and rangeland.

Over the last few decades, the populations of many grassland birds have declined or the range of the species has contracted. Many of these declines have been at a faster rate than those of species from other habitats. Previous to this study, it was thought that habitat loss was a major cause of the decline in species such as the Vesper Sparrow, Horned Lark, and Eastern Meadowlark.

“What this study suggests is that we need to start paying a lot more attention to the use of pesticides if we want to reverse, halt or simply slow the very significant downward trend in grassland bird populations.

Our study put the spotlight on acutely toxic insecticides used in our cropland starting after the Second World War and persisting to this day – albeit at a lower level.

The data suggest that loss of birds in agricultural fields is more than

an unfortunate consequence of pest control; it may drive bird populations to local extinction,” Mineau said.

“We are still concerned about loss of habitat in agriculture, range management, and urban development,” said Cynthia Palmer, manager of the Pesticides Program at American Bird Conservancy, a leading U.S. bird conservation organization. “This study by no means diminishes the importance of habitat fragmentation and degradation. But it suggests that we also need to rein in the use of lethal pesticides in agriculture, and that we need to be especially careful about any new pesticides we introduce into these ecosystems such as the neonicotinoid insecticides. It reminds us that the poisonings of birds and other wildlife chronicled a half century ago by famed biologist and author Rachel Carson are by no means a thing of the past.”

According to the study, lethal pesticides are nearly four times more likely to be associated with population declines than the any of the other factors considered,

When it comes to the aging mind, more and more research is giving new meaning to the popular phrase ‘use it or lose it’. An increasing body of evidence indicates that keeping both the body and the mind active can help prevent or slow down the onset of diseases common to the elderly, such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 300,000 Canadians over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s disease and two-thirds of them are women. Also, 32 percent of Canadians know someone with the disease and 21 percent have a family member with the disease. But the organization also says there are things people can do to reduce the risk.

“It’s important to exercise regularly to keep both our brains and our bodies strong and healthy,” says Somerleigh Lasko, Fitness Coordinator for

the Alzheimer Society of Haldimand Norfolk.

“The Alzheimer Society is always looking for new ways to help individuals reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.”

Lasko has been hired by the Alzheimer Society to expand its Sit to Be Fit exercise program into Norfolk County. Sit to be Fit is a low impact work out that focuses on increasing muscle and balance therefore improving daily living skills.

It is a free program that is open to all fitness levels and abilities.

Free Sit to be Fit classes are offered each week in Norfolk County at the following locations: · Monday mornings from 10 am to 11 am at the Waterford Community Centre, 61 Church Street West. · Monday afternoons from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

This holds true even if the products were applied according to label directions. The study also showed that only a small proportion of total cropland needs to be treated to affect the birds. In addition, it was found that pesticide drift also has a devastating effect on birds that inhabit adjoining grasslands.

As Rachel Carson said back in the 1960s, “Man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.”
