By Dave Scott You’ve got to admit growing up, one of your fears was going to the dentist… your parents would try every conceivable way of getting you there. If you could avoid it you did.

But did we ever stop and consider folks who have no real dentist in their area? I had a visit with Dr. Ryan Greenfield a few weeks back and came away very impressed

with the work he and his partner, Dr. Alexandra Ociepa, have done recently on a trip to Guatemala.

They took part in a program out of the US in which a group of dentists gather and travel to third world countries to volunteer their services to help others. The folks in most of these countries make nowhere near enough money to pay for dental services.

ocal Dentists Help Guatemala Continued from page 2

The trip Alex and Ryan took into a small town in Guatemala was both beautiful and desolate; the smell of raw sewage was evident as was the sight of garbage lying about. When word got out that the dentists were in town and setting up a three-day clinic, folks lined up by the hundreds for the opportunity to have a check up and dental work done such as extractions. For three days dentist worked together in pairs in 95% humidity… using just regular plastic chairs, no big fancy dental chair, the most basic of dental tools and being inventive to the point of using their phones to snap photos of dental x-rays to view while they worked. Since there was 25 dentists working and one x-ray machine the X RAY TECH would show the dentist and he would then take the phone picture and use it… very creative!

Ryan marvelled at how the group was so well organized and told me that it was because of the previous trips the organization had done… the clinics were very efficient in getting folks in, educating and providing the service.

For example in the waiting room, videos ran in Spanish showing the importance of good dental care and how it should be done, also after the visit each person was provided with dental care products to help them.

The Guatemala people were extremely thankful for the dental assistance and Ryan said everyone could not say thank you enough and wanted to hug them. Alex was very humbled by the experience and said it really put things in perspective.

I can honestly say I have never hugged a dentist, but you know we are pretty lucky here to have dentists ready whenever we need them and perhaps it wouldn’t hurt us once in a while to say thanks.

Talking with Ryan you see the passion within him that drives him to help others and continue

the family legacy of friendly quality dentistry established by his father and with Alex joining the practice in 2012 the business continues to flourish.

players is on the Dover Atoms team. Their dad is the coach… funny thing; I coached the dad when he played Midget Rep in Port Dover. Boy, where did the years go? Anyway, back to the game, when we arrived, Dover was up 2-1 and it was not long before the visitors knotted the score at 2-2… the game had it all, end-to-end rushes great goaltending, hard work and good sportsmanship.

minute to go, Dover found themselves down 4-3… with just a few second left in a Dover power play they tied it up, sending their bench into a frenzy.

You could see the emotional tide turn again and Dover wasted no time potting the winner with just 30 seconds left… Dover held on to capture the B title.

It was cool to be a fan and watch the emotions of the team and the coaches. It reminded me of why we play and coach the game… It’s Fun!

The Simcoe Novice Warriors Edge Imaging local league team faced off against Tillsonburg Sunday for the final inter-town Novice "A" Championship. All 12 players were determined to win and defeat an undefeated Tillsonburg team. It was 0-0 until the beginning of the third period, when Tillsonburg scored to take a brief lead. The Warriors did not quiver, but rather played smart and hard to score two more goals. Owen Bowyer scored to tie the game, Dylan Langmo secured the win, and Evan Smith protected the pipes with all his skill and strength.

By Dave Scott It is such a great feeling to know you can hop in the car and head down to Port Dover and grab a dog at the Arbor.

Tony Schneider Jr. and Meaghan Fess remembered I wanted to get a photo for the paper… you know to remind folks that the Arbor was open.

I pulled into the parking lot, the sun was shining, and folks were sitting on the benches having a foot long hot dog, drinking a glow all of them were smiling. Ah yes, spring

pring is only weeks away!

As I sit here typing this article, I can’t help but be so inspired and motivated because it is such a beautiful, sunny day, and spring is only weeks away.

There is always so much to look forward to in spring, and when I see all the beautiful fabrics and colours coming out, I get sooo excited!

Bright, bold colours that are nothing short of “vibrant” yet there are the “calming” colours, which offset or compliment each other as well, something for everyone I always say. This season’s line up is being best described as “pure” colours and ones that “make a statement and speak to your sense of style”. Wow. Kind of like base colours on steroids - vivid!

The different fabric houses are always coming out, of course, with their own variations and interpretations of what they feel is the seasons’ best trending colour palette – which is why they continue to lead and exist year after year in such a competitive market. It is mind boggling to just imagine how much foresight,

planning and imagination it takes to even come up with all the new colours and fabrics that they do, and they do it, season after season.

The range is just amazing. It does not happen quickly, and it takes the right combination of very talented and educated people in the “know” to be able to put out a collection.

It can take months, even years to get a whole collection together.

There are always test pieces out there initially. After all, there are sometimes errors, which have made their way into the marketplace.

Collections which were not well received at all. If, and when, that happens it can be very costly for a company and they can lose their audience.

One example of an industry leader is Robert Allen fabrics. This season Robert Allen’s colour library is filled with colours like viridian, cobalt, fuchsia and turquoise, I can vividly remember back to the 80’s when the hottest colour in bridesmaids dresses was fuchsia, and now the colour is resurfacing in the home décor world in patterns

Citron continues to be a hot colour spilling over from last year in collections inspired by the fabric designer Wesley Mancini whose fabulous fabrics are showcased (Joanne/J.F. Fabrics) in a variety of patterns and textures. I love the colour citron so it is nice to see it spill over from last year. Another colour of Robert Allen’s’ – cobalt – is being described as “striking on a tone on tone treatment with turquoise” thereby creating very strong images evoking interest. So, the level of intensity differs from the cobalt of yesteryears.

I recently saw a large couch done up in a very interesting large print and the result was incredible. It was very dramatic. Of course, when you have such a striking piece in a room, it needs to be balanced

with the right accents be they patterns, and textures, so that it is visually stimulating without being overwhelming.

Oh my, so much fabric and so little time! Next time, Kravet - one of the blockbusters in the world of luxury fabrics. What makes them so successful?

If the number of birds that arrived from the south this past weekend is any indication, spring didn’t wait until the 20th to arrive this year. The Tundra Swans were flying around checking out various feeding sites, a Robin was chirping from the top of the willow tree, Killdeer were crying their loud kill-deer, kill-deer call, and a mixed flock of hundreds of Red-winged Blackbirds, Grackles, and Starlings blackened the lawn. What a great weekend for birding!

Long Point Causeway Improvement Project

The Norfolk Wildlife Festival on Saturday and Sunday, another sure sign of spring, was once again a huge success. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about our wildlife and the various organizations in Norfolk that are trying to preserve and improve what we have here in this area.

One of the exhibitors was the Long Point Causeway Improvement Project (LPCIP), a communitybased effort to revitalize the 3.5 kilometre-long causeway that links the Long Point Peninsula on Lake Erie with mainland southern Ontario. One of the goals of the project is to reduce wildlife mortality on the road that separates the marsh from the lake.

The construction of eco-passages on the Long Point Causeway will hopefully decrease wildlife road mortality as turtles, snakes and other animals move from the lake to the marsh. mainly endangered snakes and turtles, are killed by cars as they try to reach their nesting sites and then return to the lake. The road is considered to be the fourth deadliest for turtles in North America. To reduce this annual slaughter, the LPCIP decided to construct tunnels that would provide safe passage for reptiles and other small animals.

I hadn’t been to Long Point since last summer, so was unaware that the construction of the underground eco-passages had been completed.

As a result, I headed down to Long Point on Sunday to have a look at them. Most people driving by, without making an effort to find them, won’t even notice them. There are three passages; two of them are dry culverts and the third is an aquatic one. The dry culverts have holes in the top to provide heat and light as cold-blooded reptiles would be hesitant to enter a cold and dark tunnel. Fencing that was installed a few years ago, will help guide the animals toward the passages. The LPCIP will be monitoring wildlife road mortality on the causeway this summer to see how successful the project has been.

Tundra Swans

While in the Long Point area, I, of course, spent a bit of time checking out recent avian arrivals.

In addition to a couple of Horned Larks, a dozen or so Sandhill Cranes, and a Rough-Legged Hawk, I saw hundreds of Tundra Swans, both on the water and in the nearby fields.

Tundra Swans were formerly known as Whistling Swans, which referred not to their voice, but to the sound made by the slow,

powerful beating of the birds’ wings in flight. Thousands of these birds are regular twice-yearly visitors to the Long Point area as they migrate from their winter homes to their nesting grounds in the north. The Tundra Swan is the most common of the three species of swan found in Canada, the other two being the native Trumpeter Swan and the introduced Mute Swan.

The Tundra Swan is a large bird with white plumage and black legs, feet, and beak. However, when it is feeding in iron-rich areas, the feathers on its head and neck may take on a reddish tinge. They feed on roots of aquatic plants that they pull out of shallow fresh, brackish, or salt water by extending their heads and long necks downward and tipping their bodies up, but rarely completely submerging themselves. In the winter, along the Atlantic coast, the swans may add molluscs such as mussels and clams to their diet. The Tundra Swan also feeds on grains such as corn and wheat that are left in harvested fields. This is where I saw several hundred swans doing on Sunday in a field west of Long Point. With the sun setting in the background, it was a beautiful sight.

Comet viewing

I’m hoping there will be a number

of clear evenings over the next few weeks to provide a good view of a newly-discovered comet as it approaches close to Earth. Saying that the comet will be “close” to Earth is a relative term; it will be about 45 million kilometres away, so there is little risk of it having any effect on our planet. Known as PanSTARRS, the comet has been visible in the southern hemisphere for the last few weeks, but will now be visible in the northern hemisphere.

It is believed that the comet originated in the Oort cloud, a collection of icy debris outside the solar system and was only discovered two years ago and is named after the telescope in Hawai’i that first spotted it, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System.

With a clear sky, the comet should be visible with a pair of binoculars or with the naked eye just above the low western horizon about a half an hour to an hour after sunset. This week, it should be just above the last quarter of the moon. Let’s hope for a few clear nights!
