New Year, A New Beginning at Simcoe Volkswagen

By Dave Scott Some major changes have recently taken place at the Volkswagen dealership in Simcoe. New owners Jason Chow and Terry Dean have arrived in Norfolk and are busy setting up shop. I stopped by last Friday to sit and have a chat with Terry and got to know a bit about the man who will be running the show in Simcoe.

Terry, who originally hails from Southport, Newfoundland, grew up pretty much like any other kid in this country - with a passion for the good old hockey game, and well, all things cars.

Terry thinks fondly of his childhood. Growing up with five brothers and two sisters, there was always lots going on. His father, who, being a tradesman, worked away from home a lot, while his mother worked at the local store, and with a big family, everyone did their part.

Terry shows me a picture of the waterfront in his hometown, Southport. Being from Dover I can relate. There is nothing like home, especially when you live close to the water. He says that they played many a hockey game right there in the bay. A smile crosses Terry’s

face as he remembers. In a few weeks, Terry will head back to Newfoundland to visit his 89-yearold father.

Cars interested Terry early on; he remembers telling his parents in 1973 that the ‘73 Oldsmobile was the car they should buy and they did. He loved the sound when it started up; he grins and says, “That was the car I learned to drive on.”

After Terry finished school, he came to Ontario and began working at Bauer and later at Uniroyal Tire, but soon after, he decided the car business was where he wanted to be and in 1989 began his 23-year odyssey in the car business.

He tells me that the years he spent running a VW dealership in Cambridge were very rewarding and when the opportunity arose for Jason and himself here in Simcoe, he was definitely interested. His

vast knowledge of the VW product line will definitely help create a better understanding of the exciting line of vehicles the new Simcoe Volkswagen carries.

Before signing on to come down to the area, Terry came for a visit.

He had been down to Simcoe a few years earlier to play in an oldtimer hockey tournament. So he hopped in the car, came down, and drove around. As luck would have it, he ended up in Port Dover by the lake, having lunch. As he sat looking out at the water, he knew this is where he had to be.

Something just connected and he felt this was the right move, so he headed back to Waterloo to talk to his twin daughters, both in their twenties and finishing up school.

You can tell by our conversation that his daughters are his world.

When he talked with them about the opportunity in Simcoe, they were excited for him and gave their stamp of approval.

So here we sit. I gather Terry has found something here that reminds him of Southport, and well, that is a good thing for us.

He sees the opportunity that lies ahead for Simcoe Volkswagen. He wants to build a team and business that the community will be proud of; he is one of those old school guys who believes in a handshake, a business model built on strong customer service, trust, and being involved in the community at large.

aregiving Can Sometimes Feel Like an Uphill Battle

By Karen Veri, Public Relations Coordinator Caring for someone with dementia or Alzheimer's disease often requires a great deal of time and patience, and can cause great stress to the caregiver. Rose Pettit, of Delhi, ON, knows this all too well. In 2008, her husband Bill started noticing problems with his balance and had gotten lost a few times in places he should have recognized, Rose was concerned and insisted Bill see his doctor for testing. In 2008, at 77 years old, Bill Pettit was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“The first two years after Bill was diagnosed was my hardest time. It felt as if I had lost Bill, and he was still here,” says Rose.

It is common for caregivers to have feelings of loss and grief as their life is changed by Alzheimer's. Most people think grief happens when someone dies, but it's also common to grieve deeply for someone who has a progressive cognitive illness such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The Pettit’s have three sons who all try to help Rose with the house upkeep as much as they can however it is up to Rose to care for Bill on a day to day basis. Providing care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease can take a tremendous toll on the physical and emotional health of the primary caregiver, yet many caregivers often don't recognize the warning signs, or deny its effects on their health.

I have to admit that I really did not think about the NHL too much when the lockout was on, but now that it is over I am excited to watch the Leafs play Saturday night.

It seems after a hundred or so days the two sides were finally able to come to an agreement to get the game back on the ice.

Don’t get me wrong when I say I can see both sides in this long dispute, but the part that bothers me is the lack of respect for the fans of the game.

As fans, we were surely taken for granted and I think that is the part that sticks with people. I think folks

of my generation will always watch, but you know every time these self inflicted interruptions occur in the game a little more of our passion for the game dies.

And what about the youngsters who all too quickly have more and more alternatives? They can watch or participate in other sports when the game all but disappears from the TV. Sure it is a billion dollar business that won’t go away, so the owners and players think… but as a reminder to the powers that be, quoting Bernard Bailey, ‘When they discover the centre of the universe, a lot of people will be disappointed to discover they are not it.’ Do not take your fans for granted!

here and it seems like a good time for seniors to think about the 3r’s for seniors – routine, review and revise. The following is a quick refresher of the meanings of the 3r’s - dictionary quotes.

Routine - regular habits, ways of doing things Review - looking at, reconsidering if a change is needed Revise - change, improve Sounds like a teacher giving a lesson? Not really! Everyone has routines, seniors too. But seniors sometimes change the routines and become quite ‘casual’ about them, practicing their very own version of the recommended habits.

This is done because changes or improvements do not show and when they are ‘skipped’ no difference is noticed. But seniors need to remind themselves that these routines were recommended to help them maintain and perhaps even improve their health.

• While warm coats, mittens and hats can help keep you warm, appropriate footwear during the winter months is essential. Rubber or neoprene soles, especially those with plenty of tread, provide better traction on snow and ice than either leather or plastic soles. “Comfort” shoes, which are popular with seniors, have smooth soles and should be avoided when venturing outside. NO CROCKS!!

• Planning ahead is essential. Think about the best route to your destination and add extra time to get there. Avoid rushing or taking shortcuts through snow or over icy areas.

• If you have to walk over slippery surfaces, bend your body slightly forward, Widen your stance and take shorter strides, or shuffle your feet for better traction and stability.

• If you are driving a senior to a destination, have them exit the vehicle at the destination entrance and wait for you safely while you park.

• Be careful getting in and out of the car. This is when many falls occur. Take a look around to make sure your footing is clear when you step out of the car.

• Take advantage of floor mats when entering a building. Remove moisture and snow from your shoes. Once indoors, be wary of wet areas and slippery surfaces near the entrance.

• Best Defense? Don’t take any chances; avoid going into snowy or icy conditions at all unless absolutely necessary.

id you know that drowsy driving is the second leading cause of motor vehicle accidents, only after alcohol related accidents?

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, 50% of drivers report driving while feeling drowsy and 25% of drivers report having dozed off while driving.

It is often difficult to recognize if

different from person to person. It is also difficult because there are no definitive tests for drowsy driving, such as the breathalyzer test for blood alcohol levels. Drowsiness related accidents are most likely to occur in the late afternoon or nighttime, to involve only one car and to cause serious injury to the driver (as they usually occur when the driver is alone in the car). Some studies have suggested that driving while tired (after being awake 18 hours) can be just as dangerous as driving with as a blood alcohol level of 0.05 and that driving after being awake for 24 hours is comparable to driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08.

Whether or not you have a sleep disorder, such as Sleep Apnea, driving tired is extremely risky.

While anyone can be at risk, the following groups of people are at higher risk for drowsy driving

Through matching grants provided

by Rotary District 7090, each of the three Norfolk clubs multiplied their local financial support to a project.

Local Rotary clubs raise funds through various activities in order to provide service to local and international communities.

In some cases funds pledged by

local clubs can be enhanced with funds provided by The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Delhi, with a matching grant from District, purchased much needed playground equipment for the Delhi Laugh & Learn Daycare.

The Rotary Club of Simcoe, with a similar matching grant from District 7090, this year is commencing the drilling of a well at a small rural community centre, in the vicinity of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in North Central Haiti. The Simcoe Rotary club will work in partnership with a Rotary club in Haiti, such as

related accidents: • Chronically sleep deprived and sleepy, people who routinely do not get the recommended amount of sleep daily • Young male drivers are the largest group of drivers that drive drowsy • Working a job that has rotating shifts. This because the changing sleep patterns/times leads to higher daytime tiredness • Drinking small amounts of alcohol when already tired or sleep deprived • Driving a lot on highways, which is why commercial drivers are at high risk • Undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorder, including Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy and insomnia It is important that if you have any of these risk factors that you ensure you do not drive when you are tired.

If you suffer from a sleep disorders, treating it will decrease your

risk of having a tiredness related accident. Should you suspect you have a sleep disorder that may be causing you to feel tired while driving, talk to your physician about it. A lot of people worry that if they drive commercially or their job requires driving that if they do get diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, they might lose their driver’s license. Just because you have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea it is not an automatic suspension of your license, it is rare that this happens, and many contributing factors must be present. If you’re chronically sleep deprived you need to ensure that you are getting 6-9 hours of solid sleep a night.

The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise, with matching District funds, installed a galvanized steel stairs that connects the north-south Waterford Heritage Trail, part of the Trans-Canada Trail, with the newly constructed linking trail that connects the trail network to the Waterford downtown.

Rotary International’s District 7090 is comprised of over 70 clubs spanning the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario and north-eastern New York State, with the Norfolk clubs defining the District’s western

frontier in Ontario. Bill Clevette, Assistant District Governor representing the three Norfolk clubs, stated "It’s a bit unusual for all three Norfolk clubs to be successful with their applications to receive matching grants from District. The grants certainly do add leverage to the service that local clubs are able to provide – and that’s where the magic lies."

District grant monies are funded by The Rotary Foundation which is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

If the government wants us all to get on the “green energy” bandwagon, then taking down a Bald Eagle’s nest to make way for a wind turbine seems to be somewhat counter-productive. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) appears to have caved in to pressure from big business to allow the removal of the nest in what can only be seen as unseemly haste.

The Bald Eagle, which was on Ontario’s endangered species list since 1973, was only recently (2009) removed from that list, but is still a species of special concern.

However, as of 2011, there were still only about 57 (now 56) known active Bald Eagle nests in southern Ontario. Breeding pairs usually begin nest building in the fall and lay their eggs in late February or early March.

During the fall of 2012 a new Bald Eagle’s nest was discovered in Haldimand County near Fisherville.

Unfortunately, it was located near the site of a wind energy project being built by NextEra Energy Canada, a subsidiary of a USbased company. Although the MNR contacted Bird Studies Canada Biologist Jody Allair, who heads the Southern Ontario Bald Eagle Monitoring Program, for advice, they ignored his recommendations.

Jody advised that the nest remain undisturbed and that the location of the turbines be adjusted to give

In addition to ignoring these recommendations, the MNR seems to have used undue haste in allowing the removal of the nest. Late in the day on January 4, 2013, the MNR posted a notice on the Ontario Government’s Environmental Registry to inform the public that a permit related to Summerhaven Wind Energy Centre, proposed by NextEra was issued on December 31, 2012. “The purpose of this posting is to provide general notice to the public about the removal of a Bald Eagle nest site scheduled to be completed by January 6, 2013,” the notice said.

By Saturday morning, the tree had been removed, allowing no time for public comment, appeal, or protest.

The Ministry’s rationale for the removal of the nest was: “By removing the nest before January 6th it is anticipated they will find another suitable nest location and will avoid disturbing them during their critical nesting period.

Timing is critical as the eagles are not currently situated in the nest, however they have been seen perching in the near area.

Removing the nest will reduce the risk of eagle mortality at the site.

NextEra plans to provide artificial nests in the surrounding areas to ensure that the eagle pair can safely relocate.”

It is uncertain how the removal of the nest will affect the pair of Bald Eagles. “It is difficult to say whether the pair will re-nest nearby, or will establish a new territory elsewhere,” Jody said. “We would like to hope that they still have

time to build a new nest for this breeding season, but it’s impossible to say whether it’s already too late for 2013.”

Bald Eagle nests are constructed of large sticks wedged in the fork of a tree and can weigh hundreds of kilograms. Eagles start working on their nest from one to three months before nesting season, choosing one of the tallest trees in the area for the nest’s site. They pick up sticks from the ground or break branches off dead trees and carry them to their nest in their talons.

If they run out of supplies nearby, they will look for building material up to a mile away. The sticks are interwoven and the spaces are filled with grass, moss, cornstalks and other fibres, and then the birds line the nest with feathers.

During the spring and summer, sprigs of greenery are often added to the nest. Although scientists don’t know the reason for doing this, they speculate that the greenery may act as an insect repellent, may signal to other Eagles that the nest is being used, may provide camouflage, or may help to keep the nest clean.

Bald Eagles actually hold the record for the largest nest ever built with a nest in Florida reaching more than six metres high and almost 3 metres wide. It was estimated to weight more than 2,500 kg.

However, the average nest is about 2 metres in diameter and about one metre tall. Eagles continue to add to and repair their nest from year to year and will use the same nest for many years before building a new one.

Although NextEra Energy has said

they will build artificial nesting platforms for the Eagles, several questions need to be asked. Should they not have built the platforms before removing the nest? I’m sure the Eagles have heard about the company’s promise and are just waiting around for the platforms to appear. However, past experience has shown that most of these platforms are never used. What happens if the Eagles choose another tree close to the turbines to rebuild? Will that nest also be taken down?

The removal of the nest in Fisherville has sent a mixed message from the Ontario government. A few years ago, a landowner near Fisher’s Glen was fined for removing a Bald Eagle’s nest, but with this Ministry-approved removal, will other landowners follow suit when a nest-bearing tree is once again in the way?

Yes, this action by NextEra and the MNR has definitely dampened many people’s enthusiasm for green energy. There is a need to balance our desire for clean energy sources with the needs of other species.

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Canada turns 100 years old!

The organization celebrates 100 years of changing the lives of young Canadians through mentoring, and looks forward to 100 more.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is proud to announce that it has been changing the lives of young Canadians for over 100 years. Since the first organization started matching young people with volunteer adult mentors in Toronto in 1913, Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to over 123 agencies serving 1000 communities across Canada.

“We are very proud to be celebrating 100 years of serving Canadian communities and impacting the lives of youths across the country,” says Big Brothers Big Sisters President and CEO, Bruce MacDonald. “But we are even more excited to look ahead at the next 100 years and see how we can further improve the lives of Canada’s young people.”

Although most well-known for the Big Brothers

Mentoring program and the Big Sisters Mentoring program which matches a volunteer mentor with a mentee between the ages of 6-16, the organization has been creating new mentoring programs to enhance how it serves its communities and to adapt to the needs of both the volunteer mentors and the youth enrolled in its programs.

“We know that people are busier than ever and are crunched for time,” says MacDonald “So we’ve created mentoring programs that address specific needs for the mentees and offer flexibility for volunteer mentors. It’s a win-win.”

New mentoring programs such as In School Mentoring, which involves only one hour a week of mentoring during the school year, and has proven through research to address issues such as truancy and lack of school involvement, are just one way that Big Brothers Big Sisters intends to remain relevant over the next 100 years.

But whether through the Big Brothers or Big Sisters mentoring programs or a new mentoring programs such as In School Mentoring, the youth mentoring services provided by volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters have proven to be instrumental in reducing bullying and other related negative behavior such as lack of interest in school; truancy; low self-esteem and drug and alcohol abuse.

The need for volunteer mentors is great. In Brant, Brantford, Haldimand and Norfolk alone, there are more than 60 children and youths waiting to be matched with a volunteer mentor.
