By Dave Scott Simcoe’s Talbot Gardens parking lot was filling up fast with girl’s hockey teams from around the province Friday afternoon; while over at the Recreation Centre in Simcoe and down at the Port Dover Arena, the other games in the tournament were also getting underway. All different levels came to compete in the Cassie Turner Memorial Hockey Tournament. The number of participants was so high that the tournament took place in three arenas.

I found myself in Port Dover watching a little more of the games Friday evening. I was impressed with the play. Over the years the quality of play has grown rapidly.

Here I go dating myself, but back in the day when I coached high school girl’s hockey, I thought we had some pretty good players, but just like other hockey, today’s players are way above the calibre we had.

Next stop that Friday night, was the Hagersville Arena for the Novice,

Atom and Pee Wee, Hagersville Local League Tournament. Our team was in the Pee Wee division along with the other Dover club… the tournament was well represented from the Haldimand Norfolk area with teams from Delhi, Burford, Caledonia, Waterford, as well as Brantford, Six Nations, Embro, with four teams from Port Dover, and six teams from Hagersville… twenty different teams in total.

This was a non-body contact tournament… so for our boys it was a bit of an adjustment. I still am out on a limb on the contact issue. I think if contact is done properly then it should stay in, but to be honest with you, our team has already had a couple of concussed players this year. So for the health and safety of the kids, house leagues should be non-contact… just my opinion.

As I think back I wonder how many concussions I had growing up… I know two for sure, where as we say in the old days, I got my bell rung.

Our team prevailed in game one, 4-0, and won in an exciting shoot out in game two on Saturday, which put us in the B finals on Sunday afternoon.

But first let’s check back in on the Cassie Turner Memorial Tournament…

By Saturday night, all of the finals were set to go for Sunday at Talbot Gardens. The seven division finals, were set as follows: Pee Wee HL saw Norfolk Red vs. Norfolk White; in the Pee Wee B division, Norfolk played Zorra; Bantam HL saw Guelph and Grimsby square off; while in the Intermediate League Brantford took on Norfolk Black; Midgets were Oakville vs. Walkerton; Midget B saw Cold Creek and Georgian Shores; and in the Bantam B final Norfolk was to play Twin Centre… all in all five Norfolk teams in the finals… AWESOME! You know this a perfect opportunity to say thanks to the organizers and volunteers who make these tournaments a great success… the endless hours spent at the rink on the weekend by these folks is

Sunday was another full day of hockey. The morning kicked off with me heading to Talbot Gardens to watch the Pee Wee House League final between the Norfolk Red team and Norfolk White. The Red team prevailed in a very good game pulling away with a couple of late goals in the third.

Next up, I was back to Hagersville where I watched one of the two Port Dover Pee Wee House League teams beat Hagersville for the C Division Championship.

My team was up next in the B final and played hard but fell to the other Hagersville team 2-0.

By the time we got home Sunday night everyone in our household was hockeyed out, but what a great weekend and congrats to all the players on their fine efforts.

The game is alive and well for both the boys and the girls and it is awesome to see the good sportsmanship and competitive drive in all the games that I watched this weekend!

Courtesy of HERicanes Fans Both the Pee Wee Red and the Midget Intermediate House League teams won gold this past weekend at the Norfolk HERicanes Tournament here in Simcoe. Even though there was terrible weather on Friday for some teams coming in, the tournament was a great success.

There were five HERicane teams that made it

HERicanes, Pee Wee House League Norfolk Red into the finals on Sunday, making it an exciting day for local hockey fans. The first game saw the two HERicane Pee Wee teams going up against each other. Pee Wee White put in a tremendous game with their goalie making some stellar saves to keep the game close. Pee Wee Red managed a shutout to take the gold. Next, the Pee Wee B rep team got their shot at gold in a tightly fought match and a late rush to try to even the score. After all the excitement, they took home the silver. The Intermediate House League team was next in the HERicane line-up

and they too found themselves in an exciting and hard-played game. At the end of the game, they emerged the victors and took the gold. The final HERicane matchup was the Bantam B rep team.

Here was another game that kept the fans on the edge of their seat, while the local HERicanes fought their way back, to end the game in a tie.

The opposing team managed to slip one in the net in OT and the HERicanes took the silver.

Thanks HERicanes for a wonderful weekend of hockey!

The poinsettia is named after Joel Roberts Poinsettia, the first United States Minister to Mexico. He introduced this native Mexican plant to the US in 1828. In the Mexican Christmas tradition, the star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red colour represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.

HeRe aRe SOme Helpful HintS: • Your plant requires at least six hours of bright filtered light each day.

• Try to provide an environment between 16 to 18 ºC (60 to 65 ºF) and keep the plant away from hot or cold drafts, especially cold windowpanes. The plant does not respond well to sudden changes in temperature.

• Unsleeve the plant as soon as possible as the leaves may become droopy if left too long in the wrapper. Fortunately, the plant should recover in a few days if this does occur.

• Water your plant thoroughly when the soil becomes dry to the touch.

Always remove the pot cover and let it stand for a while after the watering, as the poinsettia doesn’t like to be left in standing water. A common practice is to perforate the bottom of the pot cover to allow drainage into a saucer under the plant.

• If you want to try to keep your plant until next Christmas then fertilize after the blooming season with an all-purpose fertilizer, repot it later in the early summer and then introduce it to 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness come September. it’S JuSt a RumOuR There is a common misconception that the poinsettia is highly toxic. this is not the case.

Yes it may be mildly irritating to the skin or the stomach if it is eaten, but otherwise, there has been no documented cases of poisoning. The origin of this myth could be found from the fact that most plants of the spurge genus (Euphorbia) are indeed toxic. Fortunately, this family member is a safe one!

ost of the time, falls do not result in serious injuries, but every so often they do. When injuries are sustained, they tend to be to the head, face, hands M and feet.

Most falls occur outside the home. With winter upon us, and snow and ice not far away, you must be careful when you walk outside your homes: wear proper foot-wear; and watch carefully where you’re going. Watch for unevenness in the cement slabs on the sidewalks; watch for potholes in the streets; and, of course, watch for snow and ice, particularly black ice.

But serious falls can take place inside the home as well. Such falls can result in traumatic brain injury or broken hipbones, and are often the cause that elderly people lose their ability to live on their own. Make your home safer by decluttering your living space, especially frequently travelled-over areas such as stairs or hallways. Secure area rugs to avoid the risk of slipping; grab bars are a good idea for the bathtubs; and railings are a must for stairs to the second floor or the basement.

By contrast, we have no control over the condition of the floors, sidewalks, streets and parking lots we’re walking on. As such, a person who sustains serious injury as a result of falling outside of their home may have a legal right to damages. This right will depend on whether someone was at fault for the fall.

In other words, if the owner or occupier of the property where the fall occurred did something they ought not to have done; or didn’t do something they ought to have done; and this action or inaction led to the fall and the injuries; then the injured person has a right to claim damages.

Regardless of whether you intend to seek compensation or not, it is important to document the incident: speak to witnesses and get their name and contact information; take pictures of where you fell and any evidence of why you fell.

Often times, people who fall are too embarrassed and shaken by the fall to feel any pain, or are in too much pain to care why they fell. While many will go on to heal without a problem, some people continue to experience pain and restriction of activity long after the fall. By the time they realize that their injuries are a lot more severe than they thought, any evidence of their fall and the reasons they fell is long gone. This makes a claim for damages very difficult.

A positive AttituDe AnD An open minD. Retirees who consider themselves very happy say that having a healthy, positive outlook is the foundation on which they have built their new lives. For retirees, being open to new opportunities is an important component of maintaining a positive attitude. While many retirees initially think of their retirement as an extended vacation, they discover that a permanent vacation could become boring (Count me in that crowd). They investigate volunteer and part-time work activities that they thought sounded interesting or fun.

Willingness to explore. Retirement offers the gift of time. Using that time to explore new activities can lead to some pretty terrific experiences. For example, a client of mine likes golfing as does his wife. But they couldn’t afford the expense of golfing year around.

While on a pre-retirement vacation in the southern USA they decided to follow up on golf courses advertising for various kinds of help. He now gets paid to assistant manage a course during the summer months in Ontario. Then, during the winter months in Florida, assistant manage a snow-bird trailer park associated with a golf course. He and his wife have a good time meeting new people while playing all the golf they want and get paid for it!

The key was they kept being curious about things and kept exploring. tAking interests to A neW level. Often, taking old interests to a new level can be just as adventurous and inspiring as trying something new. For myself, after a career in the forest renewal industry, I started a second career in financial services. I always managed my own investments. I read voraciously about financial management, stocks, bonds, investing, asset allocation… it was my number one and only hobby. While thinking about retirement I thought, “I’ve spent a lifetime learning how to save and grow my savings conservatively to a point were I could retire without any pension… I have successfully passed all the examinations offered by the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning while in the middle of my career in the forest renewal industry. Why not ramp up the learning curve so I can help other people achieve their retirement dreams?”

So I went back to school to further my knowledge in retirement income strategies and obtain the necessary licenses and certificates. By taking a life-time hobby to a new level I feel like I’m twenty again.

This may not be true for everyone; but it is a different perspective on retirement to explore with a positive attitude and open mind.

“On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me six geese a-laying.” Now this one I understand! The geese given back then were probably domesticated, likely the Greylag Goose (Anser anser), the ancestor of most domesticated geese and a large, bulky native of the United Kingdom.

While domesticated geese can be purchased here around the Christmas season, there are also thousands of Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis) in Norfolk and a few probably wouldn’t be missed! There are at least eleven subspecies of this bird, but most are difficult to distinguish from each other. In general, the geese get smaller in the north and darker in the west.

The four smallest forms are now considered a different species: the Cackling Goose.

Some Canada Geese no longer migrate as far south as before because of changes in farm practices that make waste grain

more available over the winter.

The “giant” Canada Goose, (Branta Canadensis maxima), which originally bred from central Manitoba to Kentucky was nearly driven to extinction in the early 1900s. However, programs to reestablish this subspecies were overly successful and these geese have become a nuisance in many urban and suburban areas, as any visitor to local parks knows.

On the seventh day of Christmas, the gift giver turns to swans, although I’m not sure anyone actually still eats this bird. Perhaps he/she was beginning to get full and was thinking ornamental rather than culinary gifts would be more appreciated. The swan that was most likely given when the song originated was the Mute Swan (Sygnus olor). The introduction of this species to North America has not become as big a problem here as they have in some other parts of

the continent. A native of north and central Eurasia, the Mute Swan was introduced here to grace ponds in parks and on estates. Escapees established breeding populations and their aggressive behaviour threatens native waterfowl. A more common swan seen in Norfolk is the Tundra Swan (Cygnus columbianus), which stops in for a few weeks each spring and fall on this way to and from its breeding grounds on the tundra of the high Arctic.

Waking to the loud, harsh call of five Ring-necked Pheasants on the fifth day of Christmas may not be as welcome as receiving five actual golden rings! giver leaves the birds behind and opts to offer entertainment for the remainder of the holiday season. However, the first seven verses offer some insight into the eating habits and the appetite for bird meat in England during the Baroque era. For myself, however, I think I’ll stick to turkey, or perhaps goose, thank you very much!
