orfolk Pregnancy

By Dave Scott It took a few days to figure out how to have this conversation with you, the readership. The topic is our local pregnancy centre, which is based out of Simcoe and is located at 96 Court Street. I think a lot of folks growing up knew someone who got pregnant at a young age.

In most cases it made for a lot of gossip… and most likely, lack of understanding and compassion to help that person or couple.

Back in those days, there were no local pregnancy centres to help guide folks.

I decided I needed to do a story on the Norfolk Pregnancy

Centre and maybe clear up some misconceptions.

First, my own preconceived notion was that the centre would be, just about young girls who became pregnant and the centre kinda, sorta, helped them. Well I was way off base on that one and when I sat down with Executive Director, Jane Drescher, I found out what a great facility and program she, the three staff, and many volunteers run.

The centre is a non-profit, nonpolitical charitable organization, funded by donations from individual businesses, churches and civic groups and offers an amazing array of services. They are as follows: self administered

pregnancy tests, information about pregnancy and parenting, adoption information, information about abortion procedure and risks, client support workers, doula and delivery support, prenatal and postnatal support and education, anger management program, boundaries program, growing together mom’s group, sexually transmitted infection STI information, pre-teen and teen mentoring (girl’s summer empowerment camp), sexual integrity and healthy self-esteem (school education), miscarriage support, post abortion care, care closet (material assistance), community partnership and referrals, and friendship and care.

The goal of the Norfolk Pregnancy Centre is to equip, empower, and educate men and women of all ages in dealing with pregnancy, parenting and other related issues and to provide the tools to make decisions about their pregnancy and their future.

I was impressed with the centre and felt better knowing that our community has such a caring facility and services ready to help.

hristmas Concert Season

By Dave Scott Tia and Tommy are preparing for their yearly holiday concert at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre that will be on Friday, November 30th this year.

This year has been a busy one for both Tia and Tommy. They were a big part of the roots festival this summer at the Lions Silver Lake Park in Port Dover, which Tia felt was a good success and a great night.

Tommy and Tia have also found themselves working on a new CD with more folk based music. Tia tells me she has drawn on more personal happenings in her life and explains the music is more raw and personal.

The couple also has a spring tour planned, and are working on

offering a song writing workshop in conjunction with our local Fanshawe College in Simcoe and in Tillsonburg… but right now, let’s just talk about the upcoming show at the Lighthouse.

This year’s holiday show will also feature Drake Jensen, a country singer from the Ottawa area, and the Lorne Evans Choir will be leading the carolling fun for all.

Both Tia and Tommy ask that you bring a non-perishable food item for the local food cupboard, tickets are only $20 each, with a dollar from every ticket being donated to the Humane Society.

There is lots to look back on and also to look forward to!

Every Thursday at Holy Trinity, students donate spare change to a specific charity or project. Money is collected in homerooms and grades that raise the highest amount are rewarded House War Points.

Recently, Titans donated to Erika Crawford, a student at St. John’s College in Brantford who was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome earlier this year. She had to undergo surgery in Maryland which drastically improved her condition; however, the surgery cost was between $60,000 and $70,000.

Holy Trinity donated $1000 to the Crawford family to help with the cost. Way to go Titans!

In September, Trinity also raised $548 for the Sahel region of West Africa, which was suffering from a drought. The Canadian Government matched our donations dollar for dollar, so the grand total was $1096!

At the end of October, the Academic Awards were held at Holy Trinity and it was truly a night for scholars to shine. Many students achieved impressive grades and won certificates of distinction. The night ran wonderfully and all Titan parents were very proud.

For Halloween, Holy Trinity is participating in the We Scare Hunger Campaign, which offers a fun way for students to collect canned food items in order to donate to those in need. In order to collect even more canned food, the leadership class has organized a food drive in the style of the Hunger Games.

Each grade has a male and female tribute and must compete in various challenges against other tributes.

When a grade brings in canned food items, it allows their tribute to gain an advantage. This is a fun way to help our community!

In the month to come, there are many more exciting events, including our annual Coffee Haus, a night where musically-gifted Titans can share their talents and other students can relax and sip coffee. Holy Trinity has been having a wonderful year thus far and plan to continue this trend!

By George Pond When I tell you that Canada Geese were a rarity in Norfolk County 50 years ago most of you will say, “He’s crazy”; yet that is the case. Today these huge birds are everywhere.

They breed from the Atlantic to

the Pacific, clear across the U.S. from the Carolinas to Oregon and north to the Arctic Ocean. Fifty years ago flocks were occasionally seen during the Spring and Fall migrations but these birds moved either north or south depending

on the season. They did not nest here. In the 1960s reintroduction programs took place of a sub species of the Giant Canada Goose and fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint the program worked.

Yet who would deny that a pair of Canada Geese is not a beautiful sight, especially if seen in a natural looking setting as this Vic Gibbons painting; a misty early fall morning, a quite restful place, a changing time of year -- searching.

By MARG WERDEN Coyotes help control rodent populations

While the debate over the hunting of coyotes will probably continue as long as there are both hunters and non-hunters, there is no question that they have become more common in this area over the last few decades. It is unfortunate that this species at times comes into conflict with livestock owners, but coyotes also play an important role as predators helping to control the populations of rabbits, rats, mice and other rodents.

Before the arrival of Europeans in North America, coyotes were found on the plains, prairies and deserts of central and western North America, where they preferred open or semi-wooded habitats.

However, just over 100 years ago, the coyote began to expand its range eastward, an expansion that is still in progress. At the same time, the coyote adapted its habitat preference to include urban environments. In rural settings, coyotes are found in open land and in woodlots and areas covered with brush. In cities, coyotes prefer green spaces such as parks, ravines and stream banks. The reasons for the rapid expansion of the coyote across the continent may be a result of human activity: the clearing of forests, the provision of carrion from domestic livestock, and the removal of the wolf.

The coyote’s name is a Spanish alteration of the original Aztec name coyotl. The Latin name, Canis latrans, means “barking dog” and was given to this species by Thomas Saw, who published a description of the species in 1833. The coyote can be found throughout North and Central America from Panama to Canada. In some parts of the continent coyotes are called brush wolves, American jackals or prairie wolves. Coyotes, however, are smaller and slimmer than wolves.

Males weigh from 9 to 23 kg (20 to 50 pounds) and stand from 58 to 66 cm (23 to 25 inches) high at the shoulder. Females are usually about one-fifth smaller.

The coyote’s fur is usually a tawny grey, darker on the hind part of the back, while the legs, paws, muzzle and back of the ears are more yellowish in colour and the throat, belly and the insides of the ears are whiter. The tail is dark on the top and lighter underneath with a black tip. The coyote’s fur is well suited to protect it from the cold and because it is lighter coloured in the winter and darker in the summer, the coyote blends in well with its surroundings. The ears of the coyote are wide, pointed and erect and the tapering muzzle ends in a black nose. The yellow, slightly slanting eyes have black pupils.

The coyote is a remarkably good runner, capable of reaching up to 64 km (40 miles) per hour.

One of the coyote’s best-known traits is its yelping and howling cry,

a sequence of high-pitched bayings.

If several coyotes are in the same vicinity, the howling of one triggers that of the others, resulting in an impressive concert. Two coyotes howling in unison can create the illusion of a dozen or more. In the summer, when the windows are open at night, we often hear them near our home. Unfortunately, even when we don’t hear them, our dog, with a much keener sense of hearing, does hear the howling. We then have to convince him that he doesn’t want to go outside to chase them since he would probably be somewhat outnumbered by them and may end up injured or dead. It’s always quite clear that he doesn’t agree with us!

Rabbits and small rodents are dietary staples of the coyote.

Although they are mainly meat eaters, coyotes will eat just about anything available, which is often where they run into trouble with humans since they will also feed on garbage, compost, fruit or vegetable gardens. We learned a valuable lesson last winter after I had given our dog a large ham bone to gnaw on outside. I forgot to bring the bone back in at night, and some time in the middle of the night, I heard a coyote howling less than 20 feet from our front door, perhaps calling to tell his buddies that he had found something good to eat.

Coyotes will also eat blueberries and other wild fruit and insects such as grasshoppers. Where coyotes and wolves live near each other, coyotes scavenge from wolf kills, but where wolves no longer exist, coyotes have less competition for its prey animals. Coyotes prey on deer fawns in spring and summer but they may also prey on adultsized deer and other large hoofed mammals during certain snow conditions in winter, something we have seen evidence of on our property. When deer populations run out of food and the deer die of starvation, coyotes provide a cleanup service while enjoying a food bonanza. Coyotes prey on domestic sheep when they are available, and may take beef calves and domestic poultry, too. Coyotes have flexible social behaviour and adjust their hunting methods to the prey size and food sources available. Coyotes often hunt small prey animals singly, whereas they hunt large prey and defend large carcasses in groups.

A couple of winters ago, when we had quite a bit of snow on the ground, I watched as a coyote made its way along the trail that borders our backyard. It was walking along hunting and in the space of about three or four minutes had uncovered and eaten six rodents.

The coyote’s senses of hearing and smell are so well developed that a sudden odour or noise can make it change its course in mid-step, something that was fascinating to watch.

The coyote is one of North America’s most controversial animals.

Although intelligent and playful, it is a predator with a reputation for killing livestock and pets. Conflicts with this species can be prevented by making a few changes to your property, including removing food sources by protecting pets

and livestock, fencing gardens and making garbage and compost inaccessible. Coyotes are usually wary of humans and avoid contact with us whenever possible.

Although it sometimes causes problems, the coyote has its rightful place in the animal kingdom and people have begun to realize that the coyote is not the worthless predator it was once thought to be.

More and more people, including farmers, appreciate its value as a scavenger and a predator of rodents.

Beginning with a serious kidney disease she had at age 12, Sharon chronicles her spiral into depression with broken family relationships, emotional abuse and low self-esteem that set up a life of negativity and bitterness.

She knew something had to change, so she turned to

credits her strong faith and her talent for writing inspirational poems as the cornerstones for her recovery.

Today, Sharon is the church secretary at Grace Baptist Church and she looks and feels confident and positive. “There is freedom in forgiveness. Living with bitterness affects all your relationships. My attitude is better. My family sees a big difference in me. People used to say I had a chip on my shoulder, but now I'm a more positive person."

Sharon's poetry is lyrical and uplifting, often celebrating the beauty in nature. Her poems have been featured in her church's bulletins and are peppered throughout her book, as are some of her personal photographs of the flora surrounding her rural home south of Simcoe.
