With work completed at the downtown Leon’s in Simcoe, it was time to celebrate and help others.

The Schott family of course went above and beyond with the festivities… having CEO, Terry Leon, come down along with other local dignitaries to assist with the ribbon cutting ceremonies.

Terry Leon talked of how proud he was of the Schott family, how close knit they were, and of their commitment to their customers. He felt the store looked fantastic and rivalled that of the big city stores, and how the Leon’s store in Simcoe is the anchor of the downtown

business core.

The Mayor also thanked the Schott family for the great work in the community.

Next up the Schott family spoke, Brad Schott welcomed everyone and thanked the staff for all their hard work over the years and reminded everyone that by working together they were able to bring the new addition of the store to life.

He also talked of the importance of Leon’s being involved in the community, and how on this day they were making a donation to the local food banks to the tune of $1,250 to be split equally among Simcoe, Port Dover, Waterford, Delhi, Port Rowan and St. Williams.

With all the ceremonies complete, the only thing left to do was head back in and enjoy some refreshments.

For myself over the years, I have gotten to know Brad and Kim Schott pretty good and it was great to see that even with how busy they are, they took the time to help others in the community. It tells us the kinda folks they are, and the importance of helping others when you can. The day was about Leon’s and the awesome job on the store renovations, but because of the Schott family a few more folks all over Norfolk will have a little more food on their table.

Big SplaSh arathon

Well the Scotiabank Marathon took place in Toronto, on the weekend… and I participated… completing my first marathon… 26.2 miles (42 kilometres)… I’ve got to tell you it was tough.

When we arrived Sunday morning it was raining and not the little drops, a steady soaking you to the core, kind of rain. As I lined up at the start with the other 25,000 participants, I kinda thought, ' What the heck am I doing?' Sure I had trained hard, a lot of long lonely runs, but today was the day, and boy what a day…

I could not believe how many people there were.

I knew there would be a lot, but this was crazy!

We were packed in so tight, everyone with their game faces on… I put my music in and tried to relax… I just wanted to go and get it over with.

Finally the race began… and well five minutes later, I crossed the start line…

It was kinda weird, with big buildings everywhere, and very few trees; this was not a run in Port Ryerse. It was kinda surreal. Other local runners had talked of the starting line experience and now I was in the middle of it… folks decked out in all types of running gear… every different walk of life was represented.

I remembered the advice given to me by so many, do not start too fast, take it easy the first 5 km… and I did… I found myself weaving and dodging other runners to find openings to run through, my pace was all over, as I would speed

up and then slow down. I felt lost… searching for my lost pace.

Soon I was running by watering stations grabbing water or Gatorade from one of the many volunteers handing them out (and all the folks who volunteered are to be commended on such a great job they did).

With the first 5 km out of the way, my pace finally steadied… I thought… but at the 10 km marker I was five minutes slower then my pace should have been. I just was not relaxing… maybe I was just over-thinking it all. Then, as I looked over at the other lane going back the other way… there they were, the elite runners going by… simply amazing!

So fluid, so relaxed, just incredible to watch.

You almost just want to stop and admire these world-class athletes… I was inspired!

I hit the turn on Lakeshore, looking over to see Marilyn Bell Park… ahh, memories of the summer and Annaleise’s Lake Ontario Crossing.

Oh, I guess I should tell you about every 2.5 km there was a water station. For the marathon runner these are critical. You have to keep the fluids up. Even on an overcast day like this, the run will eat you up and at some point the body fights back.

At 21 km I felt good, I had made up a little of the lost time and at this pace I could finish under 3:30 (three hours and thirty minutes) to qualify for Boston. At this point the half marathon runners are gone and it is just the full marathon runners now. There was lots of room to run and I did. My wife and kids cheered me on as I passed.

Passing me some baby potatoes to munch on, to

keep the motor running. I was running at my strong point at this time in the race.

It was around 25 km I could feel my left hip start to tighten, nothing new, it happens once and awhile, you work through it. A slight wind in my face now makes life just a little tough. Mentally I feel strong, but it will all boil down to those last couple of kilometres. Things are looking good at 35 km… my time puts me on pace for about a 3:25 finish… I realize I could do it… funny how one moment everything is fine, and the next you’re struggling just to keep running… at any pace…

39 km was my undoing… THE WALL… mentally I was strong… physically everything started to shut down. It is one of the worst feelings you can ever have. I am so close, I can taste it… my mind and body begin a 3 km tug of war… my mind saying push harder… YOU CAN DO IT! My body wasn’t responding, my body has devoured all of its carbs (stored energy), and I am just running on fumes. It has now just come down to finishing the race; time is no longer a factor. All of those folks I passed in the first 39 km are now blowing by me… my ego is taking a beating… but as slow as I am going, I finish as hard as I can… the crowd cheers as you reach the last 200 metres… their energy catches me and draws me to the line…

I cross the line… I did it… my first marathon… the one I set out to do thirty years ago is now complete… but on the on the other hand… I know I can go faster. I’m going to have to race again to qualify for Boston… lesson learned… mission half accomplished.

As for THE WALL… We will meet again… you slowed me down, but you did not conquer me!

is being given to find out if there is any problem with their ability to hear. It all seems quite simple and straightforward but it is not always this way. Hearing problems with seniors can be quite hard to detect.

Why? The senior themselves make it this way because they think the problem is not with them; the problem is because others mumble, the radio was on too low or the senior was concentrating on something and not listening. These are all very possible reasons for not hearing. But as family and friends continue to mention their hearing ability and perhaps it should be tested, the senior starts to realize that sounds may just not be quite as clear as they used to be.

And so where to start? Not being able to hear so well does not always mean deafness is the problem. A build-up of wax or cerumen in the ear could be the problem; hearing can also be affected by medication, both prescription and over the counter. An appointment with the family doctor is the place to start; this person knows the ‘total health picture’ of the senior and any past health problems that might

n the future your television will become much more that a passive screen that you sit and watch. You will actually be able to speak to it and it will speak back! You will be able to ask it to tune into a particular program you like or tell it to record a show and it will, you will ask it to wake you up with some nice light music, in an emergency you will be able to tell it to call the police or a fire truck. If you are reminiscing you can ask it to show you pictures of a person or place. You will be able to tell it to call your son or daughter and not only will you be able to talk to them you will see them on the screen and they will see you. This is not science fiction, all this technology exists right now in the computer world and in less than five years computers and televisions will merge. Whether you like it or not your next new television set

Hearing problems do not just appear one day; they are gradual and the senior compensates so well for the problem. And so, as the senior is starting to recognize their own abilities to hear, they start to notice that others have some kind of hearing problem too. They also start to notice those who are wearing hearing aids - several of their friends, persons in the check-out line at the grocery store, the gas station attendant, fellow dog walkers, others in the waiting room at the dentist’s office and the list goes on and on. There are so many others who have been where the senior is ‘at’ and have done something about their ‘problem’. These folks are getting on with their interests and lifestyle, even if a hearing aid was needed to help them answer the question, did you hear?

So, while waiting to learn if there is a hearing problem,

will be much more of a computer than you could even imagine. There may be a time that even a visit to the doctor will be conducted right in the comfort of your home; the doctor will be in his office and communicating with you through the television screen.

Many elderly people have never operated a computer and are quite intimidated by them.

You may be one of these people. With this new technology you do NOT have to know how to operate a computer. Those days are over. The tangles of wires, the keyboard, and the monitors will all be obsolete. The new television/computer technology will be voice command and touchscreen. Voice command means that when you speak to it, it hears you and it will answer you.

Touch-screen means that you simply touch the screen and the computer responds. If you want a picture to get bigger or a type is too small for your older eyes, you touch the screen with two fingers and spread them apart on the surface and the image or type will get as big as you want it. It is a really exciting time and being elderly does not mean you have to miss out, it is all available to you and it’s easy to use!

This touch screen and voice command technology already exists on the iPad and other tablets. Tablets are small and thin, they have a glass-like front that shows you pictures, books, movies, weather and all kinds of other things.

You can carry them with you to any room in the house and even take it with you on trips, try doing that with a big bulky computer! If you start with a tablet now you will be more than ready for the new television technology. Every senior I have ever talked to with a tablet has loved it. It will open up your world.

In 2013 Victoria Eldercare is moving in a new and exciting educational direction and one of our directives it to assist our elder seniors in learning this great new technology. With the help of local business we are going to have several tablets available and will be teaching

hat is a Sleep Lab? Why do I need to go to a sleep lab?

Who owns the Sleep Lab? In this industry we are asked these question many times. This month I’m going to address some of the most common questions regarding Sleep Labs.

Q: What happens at the Sleep Lab? Who is sent to a Sleep Lab? A: Sleep Lab’s will test for and diagnosis all forms of sleep disorders, not just Sleep Apnea, however, as Sleep Apnea is the most common sleep disorders that is what the majority of their patients are referred to them for. Sleep Lab’s will test, diagnose and consult with you on your sleep disorder.

Depending on the Sleep Lab and the urgency of your condition, you may

overnight sleep study or you may be sent for your overnight sleep study first and then been seen in consultation by the physician.

This is often handled on a patient by patient basis depending on the Sleep Lab. Q: Why should I be tested in a Sleep Lab? A: The most accurate way to be tested for a sleep disorder is to undergo a Level I sleep study (also called a polysonogram) in a sleep lab. This test is the most accurate way to test for sleep disorders because it measures all limb movements, chest wall movements, respiratory efforts, flow of breath, brain waves and heart activities.

While in some provinces and US states home sleep studies are preformed, these are not permitted in Ontario. These are not funded

by OHIP and in order to receive treatment for your Sleep Apnea (funded in part by OHIP) you must have a sleep study in a registered sleep lab.

In Ontario we have many sleep labs available so that wait times are not unreasonable to be tested, whereas other provinces do not have sleep labs or they have so few that wait times can be up to 2 years, this is why home sleep studies are used in those provinces.

Live interview series to celebrate Norfolk County seniors

The significant achievements of notable Norfolk County seniors will soon be publicly celebrated through an innovative project hosted by the Waterford Old Town Hall. Beginning October 24, local media professionals will interview seniors about their unique experiences in front of live audiences, who will be encouraged to participate in a post-interview question and answer period. The series will include five evenings in total, each with two interviews.

The October 24 event will feature interviews of metal sculptor Alec Godden and retired truck driver Fred Rozniak. The interviews will be conducted by Norfolk County Tourism Manager Clark Hoskin and former CTV anchor Brent Hanson respectively. On October 27, retired teacher and current “Big Sister” Pat Miekeljohn will be interviewed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie Resource Coordinator and former CD98.9 on-air personality Renee Vanderharst, along with artist Vic Gibbons and photographer George Pond discussing a new nature-themed cooperative art project with CD 98.9 morning host Gerry Hamill.

Subsequent interviews will be held on November 1, 3, and 15, featuring IVIX Fernlea non-profit bookstore operator Bernie Crawshaw, interviewed by Simcoe Reformer Reporter Sarah Doktor; former Canadian Red Cross Board Member Joan Shirlow, interviewed by Port Dover Maple Leaf General Manager Paul Morris; “Voice of the Norfolk County Fair” Art Hayward, interviewed by SNAP Haldimand-Norfolk Publisher Dan Wiest; philanthropist John Race, interviewed by Barber & Veri Inc.

A: Sleep Labs are regulated by the Ministry of Health and are classified as Independent Health Facilities (similar to out of hospital X-ray and ultrasound clinics).

The Ministry of Health regulates who can open a Sleep Lab and where they are to be located. The Ministry of Health as requires Sleep Labs to have Board Certified Sleep Physicians working there, which means that these physicians have studied sleep extensively and have a great understanding of sleep and the many sleep disorders.

Unfortunately there is no Sleep Lab in Norfolk County but there are several that are not too far out of the area. The closest sleep labs

Seniors were chosen based on their interesting accomplishments, and in most cases, personal connection to their interviewer. For example, Hoskin wanted to interview Godden because of the respect and admiration his late father Walt had for the artist, and because Godden helped the elder Hoskin pursue his hobby refurbishing old Massey Harris tractors by rebuilding parts.

Hanson chose Rozniak because, “he’s an interesting guy. He has a vast collection of antiques and historical artifacts, and has a great knowledge of the history of Port Dover.” Hanson also expects to tap into Rozniak’s stories about making his living on the road as a cross-country truck driver.

The project is a cooperative effort by the Waterford Old Town Hall, Alzheimer Society of HaldimandNorfolk, and local promotions company Barber & Veri Inc., with core funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program, and additional funding from the Rotary Club of Simcoe. Interviews begin at 7 pm each night. Admission is by donation, and all proceeds go to the Alzheimer Society of Haldimand-Norfolk.

Many people also ask why there cannot be a sleep lab within the Homecare Vendors and that is because it would be a conflict of interest. Homecare vendors are not allowed to be owners or involved in the operations of sleep labs (or vice versa) because that is a conflict of interest by not keeping the two different clinics separate.

While it may seem early to be discussing what is normally a topic of interest only during the coming holiday season, this is not just about the debate between real and artificial Christmas trees.

However, in a way, my column started out that way.

The St. Williams Nursery and Ecology Centre held a public sale of trees this past weekend and we bought a dozen small Colorado Spruce to plant in our garden. The aim is to provide ourselves, in a few years, with a supply of live Christmas trees that we can dig up and then replant after the holidays are over. We have done this for the last 20 or more years, and our success rate is probably a little over fifty per cent. Instead of thinking about the trees that have not made it, we look at the ones that have managed to survive and are now thriving in our yard, none of which would be there if we had cut them instead of digging them up.

I was, however, wondering about cut vs. artificial trees and which one stacks up better from an environmental point of view. I believe, in the end, that real trees are better from both an environmental and public health standpoint. The main problem with fake trees is that they are made with PVC, more commonly known as vinyl, one of the most environmentally offensive forms of non-renewable, petroleum-derived plastic. The problem with vinyl is that several known cancer-causing agents are generated during the production of PVC. As well, they contain lead and other additives that may be linked to liver, kidney, neurological and reproductive system damage. This can be particularly dangerous for young children who may pick up lead-laced dust that is shed by the tree and which may end up on the floor and the gifts under the tree.

Real trees are also not without their share of problems since they are usually given several applications of pesticides to reduce pest infestations. As well, for some municipalities who are not equipped to mulch the trees after they are used, they become a landfill issue. However, while they are growing, they do contribute to the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and by providing habitat for wildlife.

It seems that the most eco-friendly way to have a Christmas tree is to do what we do: dig one up land then replant it. The main problem is that the dormant trees sometimes “wake up” if they are in the house for more than a week and this reduces the chances of survival when it is replanted.

Now, to get to the real point of this story. While looking into the subject of Christmas trees, I came across another type of artificial tree. Engineers are developing an artificial tree that can absorb 1,000 times more carbon dioxide than a real tree. Researchers at Columbia University in New York have developed a synthetic tree made of a plastic material that absorbs carbon dioxide very quickly and then holds onto it.

Once the synthetic tree is full, the carbon dioxide can be processed and stored elsewhere.

According to one of the researchers, one of the good features of the invention is that the carbon dioxide can be collected anywhere because the air surrounding the world mixes so fast. Carbon dioxide emissions in the northern hemisphere spread around the world in less than two years. As a result, the scrubbing devices can be set up “in the desert in Australia and deal with the carbon dioxide emissions of a car in Los Angeles.”

And it is at this point that they sort of lost me. Yes, let’s clutter up someone else’s backyard with these scrubbers (which in one conceptual photo look like giant fly swatters sticking up out of the ground) so that we can continue to use excessive amounts of fossil fuels

I think that there are a lot of other questions about these carbon dioxide collectors. One report I read said these artificial trees would cost about $20,000 each to build. I wonder how much it would cost to plant 1,000 real trees instead of installing the fake trees.

Not nearly as much, I’m sure, and the real trees would have many more benefits for the environment.

Won’t manufacturing these “trees” also use fossil fuels and other nonrenewable resources? And what happens to all the stored carbon dioxide? Shall we just leave it for future generations to deal with as we’re doing with spent nuclear fuel? When the artificial trees break down and can no longer be repaired, what happens to them?

I’m sure no woodpeckers would be able to use them to dig out a nesting cavity and there probably isn’t a fungus that would eventually break them down and return them to the soil. And what happens if too much carbon dioxide is removed

Mary’s Wedding tells the heartwrenching story of Mary, a young British immigrant, and the great love of her life, Charlie, a farmhand enlisted to fight in WW1. It opens with the words, "Tonight is just a

dream… it begins at the end and ends at the beginning…" Mary’s memories weave the story together, partly narrated, and partly enacted with her beloved Charlie; the dreamscape storyline intercuts romantic scenes on the Alberta prairie with bloody battlefield scenes- the grim and terrifying trenches of France’s Moreuil Wood.

It’s an exquisite play. The story is captivating in its simplicity; breathtaking even… So much so, that during my first perusal of the script, I couldn’t help but weep. I was easily, thoroughly, and sweetly ruined by what has come to be one of the loveliest scripts I have ever read. Very much like our spring play, The Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr, Mary’s Wedding begged to be brought to life on the Old Town Hall stage- and with a team of industry professionals on board, we’ve taken a giant leap toward realizing a dream: The

Hall’s transition to a professional theatre, specializing in the presentation of small, thoughtful, and extraordinary plays.

Incidentally, the three-member Equity Co-op making this dream a reality boasts two home-grown pros; both with a keen interest in seeing the Old Town Hall’s theatre grow and thrive, because their roots are right here in Norfolk.

Simcoe’s Elana Post, whose professional acting career spans 19 years, has earned a respected place in the arts community in Norfolk. An artisan herself, she is passionate about supporting, and building awareness around local artists. When she’s not on a stage, Elana is tirelessly volunteering; most notably, she co-organizes the Old Town Hall’s artisan fair definitely.not.the.mall, and in April, directed The Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr. Elana is directing Mary’s Wedding.

Simcoe native, and George Brown Theatre School graduate Nathan

Carroll is playing Charlie. Nathan’s short but impressive career has already carved him out a place in the Canadian theatre scene.

Playing the title role of Mary is Toronto professional Rose Napoli, a Rideau Award nominated actor with a stunning list of film and theatre credits to her name.
