Anita Garner

By Dave Scott You cannot say Terry Fox’s name without smiling. His image is, as Canadian as you can get. He is without a doubt the greatest Canadian, perhaps of all time. For myself, it is for one simple reason… he gave of himself. He just wanted to help others… that beyond anything else, puts him at the top of the list.

At this year’s Terry Fox Run in Simcoe, another amazing Canadian spoke… the sun was shining, while the crowd listened intently, as Annaleise Carr spoke of her Lake Ontario Crossing earlier this summer, raising over $220,000 for Camp Trillium.

I found myself over by the T-shirts table after the event, and began chatting with Anita Garner who was busy selling the Terry Fox shirts… as I looked around at the shirts hanging from the past 11 years... Anita told me proudly, they were all hers from over the years…

I asked how she became involved with the Terry Fox Run and she told me that she has always admired him because, ‘He was the type of person who got up and did something about it (cancer)... he was driven to do something.’

Anita told me a story that she had read about what Terry Fox had told his mother when he first asked

her about doing the run across Canada…

She (Mrs. Fox) said why not just run across British Columbia… Terry Fox replied… because everyone in Canada can get cancer…

It is quotes like this that make it easy to see why he is a giant in our country.

Anita has always wanted to be involved in the Terry Fox Run. She rode her bike in the Run when she could… then four years ago while stopping by at a BBQ fundraiser for the Terry Fox Run at the Superstore, she asked how she could get involved behind the scenes.

From then on Anita has been part of the committee and been in charge of selling the T-shirts.

Anita told me that the group is great to work with and everyone does a wonderful job. She wanted to thank all the folks who come out to partake… oh and her dad who comes out and runs as well.

As we chatted, Val Petrie announced that this year has been the largest turn out yet, and the day itself has raised $15,000!

I thought back for a moment… to part of the conversation Anita and I had earlier… When I asked her what she thought Terry Fox would think today… Anita thought, smiled and said, ‘He would be very amazed and touched how everyone had taken up his cause…’

By Dave Scott Haldimand-Norfolk Community Senior Support Services held their 11th annual best ball mixed golf tournament at the Greens at Renton on Tuesday with over 106 folks taking part… hotdogs were served for lunch and after the day of golf, a buffet was served as well.

Of course there was a silent auction and Demeyere Chrysler Dodge Jeep

Limited helped out with a hole in one prize. The weather was perfect and our friends at Scotiabank Simcoe were the title sponsor, making a wonderful donation of $5000.

As a community we really do not understand just how important this organization is in our community... for example in Simcoe alone they assist over 500 clients… this mighty group of only 45 people do

so much for so many.

They do receive provincial funding but are also required to raise a certain portion of their own budget…

Kim Robinson, Norfolk Regional Manager, thanked Scotiabank for their continuing support.

Haldimand-Norfolk Community Senior Support Services does a variety of much needed services in our community... just take a look at this list… Meals on Wheels, Diner’s Club, Transportation, Home Maintenance, Aphasia Program, Friendly Visiting, Telephone

Reassurance, Adult Day Program, Emergency Response Systems, Volunteer Hospice, Safety at Home, Caregiver Support, Foot Care, Loans Cupboard and Hall Walkers… as you can see this organization is a staple in our community and does a ton of great work.

I checked with Kim and this year’s Fundraiser was another wonderful success, raising over $10,000.

By Dave Scott The best way to remember folks, is by the good that they have done in the community…

Over at RE Mann Brokers they did just that earlier this summer… the staff organized the RE Mann Golf Tournament for the first time without Ron Mann. Ron passed away earlier in the year and the staff felt that to honour Ron, they would have one more round of golf.

Ron’s friends, business associates, and customers from all over, came out to attend at the Lynn Meadows Golf Course.

Randy Goudeseune and Kari Bohar organized the golf day and dinner, which was held at Christien’s Restaurant in Simcoe.

Of course the tournament was a success and everyone had a good time… and as Kari said, ‘The only one missing was Ron!’ The funds raised from the tournament were donated to the four local food banks - Simcoe, Port Dover, Delhi, and Waterford, each receiving $485.

Kim Scoyne, from the Simcoe Caring Cupboard, accepted the donation on behalf of Simcoe, and explained that the number of folks needing food in our area continues to grow…

Thank goodness for folks like the staff at RE Mann, who do their part to try and help.

Over the years Ron was known to help the Cupboard… and I am sure he would be very proud of his staff for carrying on with that tradition.

In Canada, 850,000 people used a food bank in Canada in one month.

This number is up 26% from before the recession.

11 % of these people represent first time users.

Individual Characteristics include: 38% were children or youth, 47% were women and girls, 4.4% were seniors, and 4 % were post secondary graduates.

Household Demographics: 40 % Single Income Living Alone, 24% Single Parent Families, and 12% Couples without Children.

In ONTARIO 395,000 used a food bank in one month.

Closer to home there are five food banks in Norfolk County.

The use of the food bank in Simcoe continues to be an integral part of our community.

We saw a record number of households served in the month of August.

The reasons are unknown but we are open to serve those who need and require our services, providing proper ID and paperwork is provided.

As always our community is so very generous and supportive to the needs of the food bank.

Through food drives, donations, parties, golf tournaments, penny drives, dress down days and the list goes on, our community continues to ensure our food bank has food on our shelves year round. A special thank you to everyone for all you do.

The Other Kind of Exercise

Mention the word exercise and what usually comes to mind are activities such as swimming, walking, playing some kind of game or even those phys ed classes

of the school years!! All of these, ‘tone, stretch and strengthen the body muscles’ (one definition of the word ‘exercise’). But there is another kind of exercise, one that tones, stretches and strengthens ‘the mind and mental abilities.’

True, the mind and body, work together but the changes and lifestyle in senior years does not demand or need the same mind and mental abilities of earlier times. Think for a moment about the activities of this morning and then compare them with those of twenty or thirty years ago… quite a difference!! These ‘differences’ have been noticed by many, and much is being written and discussed about the mind and mental abilities of seniors; unfortunately it is not all helpful, especially to the older age groups!! The words, dementia, aphasia and Alzheimer’s are starting to be associated with the words, aging, elder and senior!! Not words that promote the ‘toning, stretching and strengthening’ of the mind and mental abilities!!!!!

ecently I’ve fielded a lot of questions or concerns regarding what groups of people suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Traditionally Sleep Apnea is seen as a condition that effects middle aged men, especially if they already suffer from Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol or have a few extra pounds. That is not true at all; Sleep Apnea does not discriminate just to that category of men. In fact we now treat almost equal amounts of men and women in all age ranges for Sleep Apnea.

While the prevalence of Sleep Apnea does tend to be higher if you have certain risk factors, we are now diagnosing and treating Sleep Apnea equally in all demographics.

This is no longer a “mans” condition but a condition that is seen is all age brackets and genders. Recent studies are showing that women are equally as likely, one for one, to be diagnosed with Sleep Apnea

as their male counterparts.

We are now also seeing no age limits on who is being tested and diagnosed with Sleep Apnea.

It can be found in children as young as seven and in people into their nineties.

The other stereotypical thing that used to be associated with a diagnosis of Sleep Apnea is weight. While this is still a factor in the severity level of Sleep Apnea, it is not the sole determining factor. Sleep Apnea should not be thought of as an overweight person’s condition.

While being overweight does increase your chances and severity of Sleep Apnea, people who are at ideal weight or even underweight can be just as likely to have Sleep Apnea.

Removing these stereotypical ideas of who will have Sleep Apnea is the way to move forward with testing and treating of Sleep Apnea. It is important to remember Sleep Apnea is not a middle-aged, overweight male condition, but can affect every one of all ages, genders and sizes.

- Name one team of football, hockey, basketball, and baseball.

Here is an exercise that can be done when walking, riding a bike, riding in a car but not driving!!!

- Looking at the lawns and kinds of flowers - Noting how many homes have air conditioning, paved driveways etc. etc.

- Watching how well a toddler steers their tricycle.

- Noting the number of green trucks or any other colour.

And now - match the animal with the owner.

few weeks ago I had the pleasure of dogsitting my daughter and Phil’s 4 month old male puppy, Coco. As most male puppies do, Coco squats and pee’s as soon as he gets out the back door and on to the lawn. My old dog, Rocky was most interested in this process and would follow behind and pee directly on Coco’s newest pee spot. (My poor lawn!!) Rocky has always been a lift the leg and mark the territory type, but over the week Coco was at the house he adopted a squat to effectively hit Coco’s mark.

The surprising thing is that Coco has been gone for two weeks and Rocky has continued to squat and pee. Rocky has a great deal of arthritis in his hips and pelvis and since he has adopted this new pee-style he is noticeably more comfortable.

No more unsteady shaking on one leg, my old dog learned a new trick.

Of course, that got me thinking… And thus the sub-title of our article this month… It OK to Sit down on the Job. The rest of the article is directed at older men and could possibly offend someone so you are forewarned.

There comes a time in the life of every aging man when he has to let go of his lifelong practice of peeing standing up. Yes, a sad day, the memories are great; peeing on trees, over cliffs, swordfights with your brothers, and for northern readers, writing your name in the snow. A life of urination freedom that women just could not understand. Alas, there comes a point that age and/or medical conditions make this upright posture difficult and impractical. The point to remember is that every man eventually comes to this point and there is no shame in sitting

down. In fact, as men begin to sit when peeing they report a number of positives. It is time to consider sitting down on the job if: • You have developed any type of tremor that causes your hands or your legs to shake. The struggle to control your stream will make peeing standing up difficult and the resulting spray will cause sanitary and odour issues in your toilet area. If you are noticing an increase in the urine smell in the vicinity of the toilet chances are you are missing more than hitting and it is time to try sitting down.

• You have arthritis in the hips, pelvis or back.

Standing with a slight forward increases the pressure on the lower back, if you are having back pain when urinating, sit down!

• You have any bladder or prostate problems, sitting down allows the bladder to empty completely and easily, which means you are having to void less frequently.

• You have trouble sleeping. By sitting down you can leave only the night-light on, stay in a relatively sleepy state while urinating and therefore return to bed and to sleep more easily. This is even more important when you have been getting up more than once per night, full voiding by sitting down may eliminate the

extra trip a few hours later.

• You have issues with dizziness (vertigo), no need to hold on to the wall or a cabinet edge to balance yourself when you are sitting down.

The main thing to understand about sitting down on the job is that it is a natural evolution and there is nothing weak or odd about it. In Japan 40% of men pee sitting down when at home, mostly at the request of their wives and the super clean culture that is standard in Japanese homes. In our culture men begin the practice much more due to their own decision and mainly for the reasons cited above, but when they do, inevitably the man reports being more comfortable and also more in control of this very necessary natural function.

So men, just like my old boy Rocky, it’s never too late to learn a new trick, especially when that new trick is going to make you more comfortable and self-confident.

Help clean up our beaches

The awesome shades of fall are just around the corner as our deciduous trees begin to change from soothing greens to bright oranges, reds and yellows. Only a few regions of the world offer the kind of spectacular, showy fall colours that Ontario is so famous for. The climate and deciduous trees of Northeastern North America provide the perfect conditions for this annual display of colour that lines the highways and byways of Ontario in late September and early October.

Just why do the leaves turn colour in the fall?

A Native American legend tells the story of celestial hunters who killed the Great Bear constellation, which then shed his blood over the forests below. As the hunters cooked their prize, fat dripped from the heavens and turned some of the leaves yellow.

Don’t believe that one? Okay then, there is some science to it as well.

During spring and summer, leaves produce chlorophyll which gives them their lush, green colour.

Chlorophyll takes its energy from the sun and transforms carbon dioxide and water to food or carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch. In the fall, less intense sunshine, combined with cooler night temperatures, stop leaves from their food-making process.

Nature’s Calling Environmental Education has organized a shore clean-up in Long Point for Saturday, September 22 between 1 and 4 pm.

The public is invited to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand cleaning up the beach along Hastings Drive.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up is a national conservation initiative that allows all Canadians to help their local environment. In addition to cleaning up the beaches across the country, the program collects data to determine the causes of shoreline litter.

Meet at the parking lot across from the Causeway Restaurant in Long Point (at the southern end of the causeway between Port Rowan and Long Point). Gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Be sure to dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes.

Duck Day

Long Point Waterfowl is hosting their second annual Duck Day at their Research and Education Centre at 546 Turkey Point Road (1.4 km south of Hwy. 24) on Sunday, September 23 from noon to 4 pm. Long Point Waterfowl is a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated primarily to the study and conservation of waterfowl and wetlands throughout the lower Great Lakes region.

ow that the children are back at school and included in organized sports and us parents/ caregivers have decided to get back to routine, this is also a busy time for Simcoe Foot Care. Numerous calls come filtering in with complaints of a new development of “warts”.

Warts are caused from a common viral infection that enters through the skin through small cuts and abrasions. Some of us are more susceptible to this virus that we are all exposed to at some point in our lives. Most warts are harmless but can be quite painful. Warts can appear anywhere on the skin but the warts that develop on the bottom of the foot are called plantar warts. Plantar warts can be mistaken for corns and other more serious lesions including carcinomas and melanomas therefore it is wise to consult a Chiropodist about any suspicious growth on the bottom of the feet. If warts are left untreated, they can spread and become increasingly painful.

Tips on Prevention: • Remember that warts are contagious • Avoid walking barefoot especially at gyms, change rooms, etc.

• If using facility showers, wear protective footwear in the shower • Clean your own shower/tub after use and use your own bathmat • Check children’s feet periodically • Do not share shoes and disinfect shoes/socks with Javex • Keep feet clean and dry and cover the wart with a bandaid at all times Professional Therapy Your Chiropodist will provide an appropriate management plan.

World Teacher Aid will host the African Children’s Choir at their Annual Gala later this fall World Teacher Aid, a Canadian Charity created

by Port Dover residents Stu and Amy McLaren, has announced that the world renowned African Children’s Choir will be performing at the organization’s annual fundraising Gala.

The Gala, now in its third year, will take place on Friday, October 19th at the Greens at Renton.

The evening will be comprised of hors d’oeuvres, a three course meal, and silent auction, as well as the performance by the African Children’s Choir.

The African Children’s Choir is recognized throughout the world, and has been featured by television celebrities such as Oprah and Ellen.

Earlier this year in June, the Choir even had the honour of performing for her Majesty, the Queen at the Royal Jubilee celebrating her 60 years as Monarch. Participants in the Choir audition from all over Africa, and, after many hours of practice, eventually tour in Canada, the US, and England. Choir members not only have the chance to travel outside of Africa, they also have the opportunity to receive an education at the Children’s Choir Primary School in Entebbe, Uganda, or other schools located within their respective country.

Amy McLaren, Co-founder of World Teacher Aid, commented, “For years now, I have wanted to see these children sing their little hearts out.

I see children in Africa often during our work with World Teacher Aid, and there seems to be something magical in the air when they sing.”

World Teacher Aid’s goal is to bring education to children in remote areas, so it was a “perfect fit to bring the Children’s Choir to Norfolk County to help us raise funds to further our goal.” It is the charity’s hope that this year’s entertainment will be of great interest to many, and that the fundraiser will sell out for the third consecutive year. Local support for the efforts of World Teacher Aid has been tremendous, and sponsors of the Gala include The Comfort Inn, Mike's No Frills Port Dover, Tim Horton's of Port Dover, Flowers by Ann, Nighs Concrete Forming Ltd., Sensational Sounds DJ Service, and The Greens at Renton.
