On Monday afternoon the mayor himself unveiled the new and well-deserved name of the pool.

I think Annaleise was a little shocked… but working closely with her and her family this year… I was extremely happy to see it done.

No one in Norfolk County has ever had a building named after them… this was a first!

This young lady proved to each and every one of us that you can make a difference. That if you believe it you can do it!

Dover Health & Fitness Expo ort

By Dave Scott As far back as I can remember… I knew about the Port Dover Lions Club; they were always doing something in Dover… as a kid growing up, I wondered if they were our government… it seemed like they were the shakers and movers… well, in a way I was right. The local club gets things done… they understand the pulse of the community and over the years have strived to make Port Dover what it is today.

A few weeks ago, Pat Young from the club, the gentlemen in charge of heading the Health and Fitness Expo (September 8th in Port Dover), invited me for coffee at the Urban Parisian… of course one of Pat’s cohorts tagged along just to keep it interesting... Nick Childs.

Now, I have known Nick for awhile… the problem is when Nick and I get together, the conversation is going to veer out of control, like a car on the Radical Road on a rainy night… you just never know where it will end up. Poor old Pat was going to have to pick his spots if he wanted to get a word in.

It took a little a bit, but we finally let Pat talk about the Health and Fitness Expo, now in its second year… both guys raved

about the positive response from last year’s event and its success, with the races that started at the track at P.D.C.S. being one of the highlights. I can talk from experience, the runs for the kids and adults were well attended and very well organized… they even let Nick be the official starter for the races.

Of course this year the races and walks will be on again along with a ton of other events for folks of all ages to participate in… oh, and did I mention a certain young lady who just swam across Lake Ontario will be at the community centre at noon to chat with the kids? That’s right, Annaleise Carr will stop by as well.

It will be a great day with a tennis tournament and skills competition, ball hockey tournament, skateboard & BMX competitions, as well as the 2 km children’s race, 5 km High School Challenge Race and a 8 km Predictor Race… and of course this year there will be thirty vendors inside the Port Dover Community centre… all health and fitness related. So let’s all keep Saturday September 8th open and stop down in Dover to partake in this wonderful event!

She now wants to managed to get through it… attend more… opened up we lost an uncle, and also that can of worms didn’t we? an aunt, which hurt and we I think for our whole family also conquered new hurdles that our biggest highlight in our lives. was being part of Annaleise’s My wife and kids were very team… being able to witness active in helping us with the history first hand and have Annaleise project, which our whole family being part took me away from home of her crew was something a lot… I thank them for that no one can ever take understanding and being away from us… involved. ittoria &District Foundation A nnounces Winner of 2012 Scholarship

Jade Barker, a resident of the Vittoria area and a graduate of Simcoe Composite School has won the twenty-five hundred dollar scholarship awarded annually by the Vittoria & District Foundation.

This scholarship was initiated in 1997 by the Heritage Committee of the Vittoria & District Foundation to recognize scholastic and extracurricular achievement and to provide financial assistance to Vittoria and District students in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

The scholarship selection committee is comprised of Linda Vancso, Ray Danley and Don Fort.

Chairman Don Fort noted of the several submissions received for the award this year, based on the students’ written application, essay, references and interview, all applicants in the competition were individually outstanding. These students are to be commended for having accomplished remarkable goals and are a credit to their families, schools and community.

Jade’s SCS Principal Dave Abbey notes “A hard-working student at school, Jade also holds a part time job at the Simcoe Recreation Centre as a life guard. Not surprising she is committed to giving back to the community.

Over her years at SCS Jade logged in excess of 200 hours of volunteerism that were spent assisting others at REACH, at Early Years Centres as well as teaching Sunday School and coaching sports teams. Jade also contributed 3 years to Student’s Council and in her grade 11 year was the publicity director in a strong student council executive”.

The essay submitted by Jade was titled “Hidden Passion” in which she described her experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. The preparation to be a lifeguard and swimming instructor is demanding and rigorous. Starting in grade six, Jade showed incredible focus, dedication and commitment throughout the five years to achieve certification. She pushed herself through fitness tests and written exams to meet the necessary requirements.

As a lifeguard and instructor Jade has been rewarded to be able to work with children and people of all ages with varying mental and physical abilities.

Jade also enjoys playing soccer for the Simcoe League and reads books of different genres in her spare time.

Due mostly to the challenges and rewards of her swimming career, Jade has chosen to pursue a career helping others and has been accepted into the Bachelor of Social Work program at Ryerson University. Jade values the fact that she has had the opportunity to mentor others and notes “knowing that I could be the one to change someone’s outlook on their life, or simply provide someone with a mindset

f the Japanese beetle has been destroying certain plants in your landscape plantings or their grubs have been feeding on the roots of your lawn, causing unsightly brown patches maybe it’s time to use Mother Nature’s secret weapon: beneficial nematodes.

Beneficial nematodes are a natural way to control Japanese beetle grubs and over some 200 species other pest insects in your lawn while having no detrimental affect on ladybugs, earthworms and other helpful beneficial insects.

Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic worms of the soil and are used to control soil pest insects in their larvae or grub stages while not posing any health or environmental risks to humans or animals. The beneficial nematodes enter the larva via mouth, anus or respiratory openings and starts to feed. This causes specific bacteria to emerge from the intestinal tract of the nematode. These spread inside the insect and multiply very rapidly. The bacteria convert host tissue into products which can easily be taken up by the nematodes. The soil dwelling insect dies within a few days Beneficial nematodes are effective against the larval or grub stage of Japanese Beetles, Northern Masked Chafer, European Chafer, Rose Chafer, Crane Fly larvae (Leather Jackets), Oriental Beetles and June Beetles.

The nematode product you purchase should contain two genera: Steinernema and Heterorhabditis for better grub control.

Beneficial Nematodes are very easy to use. Mix with water and spray on the lawn with a water-can, irrigation system, or a hose-end sprayer. Most homeowners spray at a rate of 10 million nematodes per 600 square feet on grub damaged lawns. After an application, keep the soil moist during the first two weeks for the nematodes to get established.

In Ontario, there are two windows of opportunity to apply Beneficial Nematodes to be effective against the Japanese Beetle grub stage.

The first application should be in May as the soil warms up and then again at the end of August or the first two weeks of September as the Japanese Beetle are hatching into their first larval stage.

Using capital assets. How important is it to you that the ‘principal’ remains intact? Or do you want to spend your last dollar with your last breath?

Wealth transfer. How significant is it that planning be done now so that more of your money goes to your family and heirs, rather than the government?

Above are examples of some questions asked as part of your retirement envisioning.

Research shows, if you create a clear, written vision of what your retirement will be, then you are more likely to achieve it.

itamin C has several actions that may offer protection against cancer and or other serious illness. It protects cells and their contents, including DNA, from damage. Vitamin C also helps the body neutralize environmental pollution and toxic chemicals, it enhances immune function, and it inhibits the formation of cancer-causing compounds such as nitrosamines, found in processed meats. Vitamin C preferentially kills cancer cells. It is not toxic to normal healthy cells and can be given at very high doses without harm to the patient. The use of vitamin C as a cytotoxic (cancer cell-killing) agent has been used for over 40 years.

Intravenous therapy means to administer a substance or drug directly into a vein. Vitamin C taken in capsule form by mouth cannot achieve high enough blood levels to kill cancer cells, thus the use of intravenous therapy is necessary. Therapeutic dosages of 25 to 100 grams have been used regularly to eliminate cancer. It is impossible to consume that dose by mouth. Optimal absorption of capsule doses by mouth is 1000-2000mg per hour. Generally people will experience diarrhea at higher oral doses anywhere from 2000mg to 10,000 mg (2-10 grams), depending on their individual bowel tolerance and tissue saturation. When vitamin C is given through IV no diarrhea occurs. Blood levels of 350mg/dl must be maintained for therapeutic results to be achieved, and this effect lasts between 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the person. Oral routes cannot guarantee a constant serum level. Vitamin C given through IV lends itself to controlling this vital variable in order to ensure cytotoxic levels within the blood. None the less, intravenous vitamin C is a safe therapy. It does not have side effects such as hair loss, nausea, diarrhea, or fatigue.

IV Vitamin C can be used safely along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat cancer directly, decrease side effects from conventional treatments and increase treatment outcomes. 3rd annual Brain Injury Workshop takes place on September 15, from The 9 am to 1 pm at the Talbot Gardens in Simcoe.

This year Scotiabank, Sun Life Financial, North Shore Runners and Marlin Travel have all agreed to support our efforts and for this, we want to say a big THANK YOU! This year’s workshop features 6 (and possibly 7) phenomenal speakers. I want to introduce our speakers - a mix of ordinary, or should I say extraordinary, people who have suffered brain injuries; as well as professionals whose job it is to treat and deal with survivors.

Bianca Heaslip is a Speech Language Pathologist who focuses on the assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders. Ms. Heaslip has devoted significant time to researching and utilizing a sensory awareness therapy with the severe acquired brain injury population.

Stacie Dertinger began her career as a counsellor with the Norfolk Association for Community Living in Simcoe. She is a Case Facilitator and has expertise in goal setting, assessments and individualized rehabilitation planning.

Jen Corsini is an ABI Survivor from our community. A vicious attack left her in a coma for 3 weeks and facing years of surgery, treatment and rehabilitation. Despite the trauma, and the ongoing struggles, Ms. Corsini finds time to speak about her ordeal and tries to help victims of spousal abuse and brain injury.

Melanie Crawford is an ABI Survivor and a certified instructor, facilitator and motivational coach. She started her career as a comedian and brings to her presentation a unique brand of humour and sense of humanity.

Jessica Vandenbussche holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. She is an Activities Coordinator with the Delhi Community Health Centre, where she develops and implements fitness and wellness program for seniors; and also works with students at the University of Waterloo where she mentors and assists students who experience academic, physical and emotional concerns or conflicts.

Troy Adams has battled the effects of brain injury since the age of 16 when he was involved in a serious car crash. After years of struggles, Mr. Adams has found his calling – helping others who have suffered brain injury. To raise funds this year, Mr. Adams has undertaken the monumental task of running across Canada, a projected 9 month journey that will see him run from St. John’s, NL to Victoria, BC. This year’s Brain Injury Workshop promises to be the best yet! Come out to hear some fabulous speakers, meet and chat with other survivors and their family members, and learn about Life After Brain Injury. If a customer goes into an expensive establishment, be it a store, or restaurant - do their expectations automatically rise as opposed to when a person goes into let’s say-a dollar store -where the expectations are said to be much lower? In the dollar store, if the product does not meet ones expectations, then later throwing out the item, may be no big deal.

Pricing is one way a store is judged.

An experienced, knowledgeable and friendly approachable sales staff is another way a store is judged. Good retail salespeople are not only hard to find and train, but a huge asset. They can make or break a company’s’ bottom line, a company’s’ image, a company’s’ brand, and these days branding, is everything. As the larger, big box stores endorse and encourage the mentality that bigger is betterall- under –one-roof -shopping experience, we have to step back at some point and realize that bigger may not always be the better choice.

Being a salesperson in a retail environment can be stressful, demanding and perhaps at times unfulfilling.

However, on the flip side, it can be very enjoyable if you love what you are doing. Clearly, it is not for everybody. I am sure we have all come across someone that was passionate about what they were selling. Look, for example, at the shopping channel. The commentator, or guest salesperson hawking the latest jewellery or must have item - can sell a lot, simply by describing the item with such passion and excitement, that the viewer is left with no choice, but to call and order one, for every breathing person they know.

Integrity & honesty is also a bonus in the retail world. If the customer does not trust what you are telling them, if the salesperson is more interested in just making the sale -then the sale may not be made at all. The first retail opportunity I had, I worked with someone, who was so passionate about what she was selling; she was consistently

the stores top seller. She basically put on a show every time she was on the floor and it was fun to watch. She qualified her customers’ needs very quickly through conversations, through interactions. She used to say that if she sold something to someone and it didn’t look good on them, the first time they wore the item and a friend came up and asked who sold them that awful dress – then her credibility was lost.

People expect big spaces, unlimited choices, rock bottom pricing. I have had the odd person come into my store and they are surprised that my square footage does not rival the big box stores’ square footage. I look at it differently. I am a speciality business. I am a custom workroom and I have worked on everything from snowmobile seats, to tents, to drapery for both restaurants and model suits in a high-end retirement apartment building. I know what I am selling and I love what I sell. I have worked and learned my trade throughout the years in many different ways. I guess that is why

On my recent trip to “The Rock”, I participated in a tour of Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve on the tip of Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula. What I learned about this small barren corner of the province is that it is not at all barren; it teems with plant life.

Burnt Cape is an important botanical site situated on a piece of land that juts out into the cold Atlantic Ocean close to where icebergs pass by on their southward journey each spring. A small rocky limestone peninsula that lies between Pistolet Bay and Ha Ha Bay, Burnt Cape is home to over 300 species of plants, 35 of which are rare, in a mere 3.6 square kilometres. Because of the cold, windswept climate found at Burnt Cape, plants that usually grow only in the Arctic can be found here.

According to Reserve Interpreter Elizabeth Smith, who led our tour, the existence of this ecological reserve is due, in large part, to the efforts of residents and volunteers from nearby Raleigh with the help and support of a number of botanists, the government and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, a national conservation organization, which funded research, landscape restoration, communications work, and the training of guides for the reserve. Before the intervention of concerned citizens, the area was being quarried for limestone gravel and the survival of some of the rarest plants was being threatened.

As we approached Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve in Elizabeth’s van, my first thought was, “What are we going to see? It’s all barren rock.” They’re not called the “limestone barrens of the Great Northern Peninsula” for nothing!

Before we left the van to start our hike, however, Elizabeth warned us to be careful where we step. “Some of these plants only bloom once in their life and it takes several years before they are old enough to bloom, after which they die.” One of these plants is the Dwarf hawk’s beard (Crepis nana), an arctic calciphile (limestone-loving) plant that is found across northern North America, but only at Burnt Cape in Newfoundland.

Starting out on our hike, Elizabeth, who is not a trained botanist, but began her association with Burnt Cape as a volunteer, excitedly pointed out the many species of plant life that were under our feet. It became something of a feat, similar to walking across a floor scattered with dozens of eggs, to not step on any of the plants, each of which was enthusiastically described to us.

Although many of the plants are perennials that bloom briefly each year, the area surprisingly also includes some old-growth forest made up of juniper, spruce and willows that are hundreds of years old, but only perhaps a foot or so tall.

Moving along in our hike, Elizabeth pointed out the frost polygons, surface stones that seem to have been arranged in circles, long lines and other shapes. Geologists call these shapes “sorted patterned ground” and they are caused by intense freeze-thaw cycles, when temperatures vary greatly in a short time. Over thousands of years, the expansion of groundwater as it freezes slowly pushes larger rocks away from a “pressure centre” of finer material.

One would wonder then, how plants manage to stay in the ground if rocks can be pushed around by the churning of the loose gravelly soil. The answer is that many of the plants growing in this area have developed long taps roots that pull the plant down tightly to the soil, keeping them from being heaved out of the ground by frost.

Unfortunately, my visit to Burnt Cape did not come at optimum bloom time. Given the short growing season in this arctic-like environment, most of the plants bloom early and briefly to allow time for seeds to mature so that the plants can continue to live on. Most of the plants at Burnt Cape bloom in late June or early July when the entire area is a riot of colours. This is just one more reason among many for a return visit to Newfoundland.
