By Dave Scott This past week has been a whirlwind for Annaleise and the crew… I know Annaleise spent the week in Toronto doing some very cool appearances!

As for the crew, we met last Friday and started looking at over 1500 photos taken by Dr. Mark Ghesquiere, Curtis Martin, Nancy Norton, my daughter, Erin Scott and myself… it was awesome!

One of the really cool side effects I’ve gotten to see firsthand from Annaleise’s swim has been the reaction of folks here in Norfolk… everywhere I go, folks want to talk about Annaleise and her swim. It always starts with a huge smile on their face, followed by congratulations and then a barrage of questions.

We all feel proud that Annaleise is one of our own… her qualities as a person, match that of a good many people in Norfolk.

We can relate to her… and at the same time… we are in awe of her accomplishment… children

hrills and chills up next at L ighthouse Theatre in “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight”

Lighthouse Theatre audiences can look forward to a change of pace when they attend I’ll Be Back Before Midnight, the fifth and final show of the theatre’s 2012 season. The play, written by Peter Colley, is best described as a “thriller,” although it does include some of the great comedic moments that Lighthouse is well-known for. In addition to the laughs, the play’s director David Rosser is promising special effects, chilling moments, and chilling scenes that will have even the bravest and boldest audience members on the edge of their seats.

“The audience is in for a rollercoaster ride,” Rosser explained. “This show has everything: laughs, suspense, a bit of drama; it’s really just a good, old-fashioned B-movie style thriller.”

Rosser is well-known to Lighthouse Theatre audiences for his memorable appearances in The Perfect Pitch (2010), Ned Durango (2011), and Jessie’s Landing (2011). He is making his directorial debut with I’ll Be Back Before Midnight, and is glad to have the opportunity to have this experience in Port Dover. “This is an exciting theatre town. This community clearly understands the value of the theatre and embraces us. That makes a tremendous difference to everyone involved,” he said.

I’ll Be Back Before Midnight is the most-

produced stage play in Canadian history. It has been produced in 28 countries, and was also adapted into a Hollywood feature film starring Heather Locklear and Ned Beatty. Lighthouse Theatre Artistic Director Derek Ritschel says there’s never been anything quite like it on the LFT stage. “Our audience feedback has shown that our patrons want variety, and so that’s

what we’ve given them,” said Ritschel. “This is a real change of pace for us, and we’re expecting big things.”

ith the end of summer approaching it will be time to switch from sandals to shoes.

There are so many different shoes available today that it can be difficult to know what to look for. This is a list to make your shoe shopping successful.

• The best time to buy shoes is at the end of the day when your feet are the biggest.

• Make sure you are wearing the correct size. You should always have both feet measured.

If one foot is found to be larger than the other, you should go with the larger size so that the toes will have enough space to move around.

• It is also important to get shoes that are the correct width and depth. Bunions, toe deformities and aging can all change the width of your feet. Trace your foot to check on the width and wear a pair of shoes for 20 minutes in the store to feel if there are any pressure points on your foot which are not good.

• Wearing a shoe that is too narrow or shallow can cause increased pressure spots and compound existing problems.

• You should look for a shoe with good support that includes: a breathable material, a firm heel cup to help hold the foot in place. Laces, buckle, or velcro straps help prevent the foot from sliding around and the sole of the shoe should be sturdy and durable. Rubber soles can help reduce the chances of slipping and a wide sole will assist with balance and stability.

• The structure of a shoe is very important! You should not be able to twist/bend the shoe in the arch or compress the heel together or fold the shoe from the toes back toward the heel.

Shoes need structure to provide adequate support to your feet.

There are many different features available to accommodate various foot needs such as structural deformities, biomechanical problems and pain. Some shoes have soft or elastic tops to accommodate bunions or hammer toes, some running shoes have anti-pronation control features built right into the heel to help reduce excess motion and some shoes have rocker bottoms which can help offload painful joints. Who hasn't heard the hauntingly beautiful Cry of a Loon? It is the cry of the north and I'm sure instils in all that hear it a picture of a misty early morning, a mirror smooth lake and a sense of peace and solitude. Most of us have been thrilled by a pair of Loons on a northern lake but unfortunately we seldom get to see them close to home in Norfolk.

Common Loons go through Norfolk in April and early May. They are occasionally joined by a few RedThroated Loons, which nest in the tundra areas of northern Canada.

The best time to see them is when they are migrating overhead, usually at daybreak or a little later. They are often flying alone or in small groups of four or five birds, although I have seen large flocks of fifty or more. It is best to

watch from the shores of Lake Erie.

They nest further north, mostly in small northern lakes. Some may have nested in Norfolk over the years. Some years, large rafts of non-breeding loons will spend the summer on Lake Erie. These birds are very dull looking with grey and white bodies. They do not have any of the striking black and white plumage and dark green head that breeding birds have.

alhousie Place

Dalhousie Place is sponsoring free, two hour information sessions for separated parents.

“Planning for the Children after Parent Separation” is a Trillium funded program that has been operating in the Brant, Haldimand-Norfolk communities since June 2011. The focus of the sessions is to talk with parents on how adults and children are impacted during the separation process. Parents are informed on the cost of conflict on their child and strategies are presented that promote positive parenting approaches to help keep the child out of the middle of parental conflict. The program has received very positive reviews from parents. Feedback and evaluations after the first year of operation show parents have a raised awareness on the need to keep the children out of disagreements they have with the other parent. They also report being better equipped and more comfortable to talk with their children about separation issues. “Very child focused, very practical, gives parents the words to use” “It helped me find ways of talking to the children” “My lawyer recommended attending this group and I’m glad I did it” These are just a few of the comments coming from parents who have attended the sessions. All parents can benefit from the sessions, whether recently separated or those dealing with longer term separation issues.

The Norfolk County has proclaimed Monday, September 3, 2012 as “Annaleise Carr Day”.

We will be starting with a parade from Bonnie Drive at 2pm, heading south down Norfolk Street to South Drive, continuing to Norfolk County Fairgrounds. We will be convening at the grandstand on the property. Speeches and presentations will follow. We will also have an interactive media session broadcast to our audience and will field a few questions from the audience as well. Following that, a giant fundraising spaghetti dinner will follow, with donations gratefully accepted at the door by Camp Trillium. Ice cream will also be supplied.
