“We decided to do the online auction once again this year following last year’s great success,” said John Davies, tournament auction coordinator. “This gives the entire community an opportunity to bid on items featured in our golf auction and an opportunity for us to show our appreciation to all those businesses that have supported it.”

Last year the NGH Foundation Golf Classic raised $200,000.00, a goal the NGH Foundation and Golf committee hope to match or exceed this year. “Thanks to the community for supporting this tournament and online auction. We really appreciate your generosity,” said Julie Powell, director development for the NGH Foundation, who looks forward to meeting with golfers July

The IODE is strongly committed to helping in our local schools. The IODE Award is given out yearly to a well-rounded student who strives daily to achieve their personal best in all they do within the school and beyond. There is also a bursary at the high school level, which is given once a year.

By Dave Scott Twenty-one years ago Heather Pond-Manorme became owner of the Blue Elephant in Simcoe… and later this month she will finally do something she has always wanted to do… a big smile crossed her face as she explained that she has always wanted to brew her own beer… and well the Blue Elephant Craft Brew House is preparing to let us all indulge in the fine flavours they are about to create.

One of the questions I get asked all the time from people who come into my store is… should I re-upholster my chair or sofa? Is it cheaper? If not, why not? Here are some basic facts to arm yourself with and hopefully they will help you decide whether it is worth it, or not, to reupholster. In 1999, according to a US Furniture Manufacturers’ Association a huge percentage of people buying sofas had no idea what kind of quality sofa they were buying. I have a feeling things have not changed in that department but here are some facts to arm yourself with before you go on your next furniture shopping trip.

While aesthetics and comfort are important, it is what you do not see that is more crucial and will determine the value of the item you are considering. The frame, the spring system, the cushions and the tailoring (fabric and finishing)

are key components in determining the life of the item. Normally, the more expensive the sofa, the better built it will be. The wood frame should be kiln-dried hardwood, not pine. Kiln-dried assures that the wood will (likely) not warp and crack not to mention being stronger (heavier). The better frames have joints that are glued and doweled, not stapled and glued with epoxy glue. The spring system should preferably be eight–way tied, heavy-gauged, coil springs system, or a heavy- gauged sinuous spring system closely spaced together.

A less expensive sofa will have a low-gauge sinuous spring system which is spaced farther apart and when you sit down you can feel the difference especially when another person is sitting there and they are sitting higher, or lower, depending upon their weight. The cushions on a better sofa will have high-density foam as opposed to soft and spongy foam with a low-density factor. The

Interesting fact about foam is- since it is a petroleum productwhen the price of gas increases so does the price of foam. A more expensive sofa will have a downwrapped foam core or downwrapped spring system cushion.

Lastly, the fabric and the finishing or details of the sofa are important because if the sofa is going to have a lot of wear and tear- then it should have a high performance fabric or a fabric, which has a high rub or abrasion count. Does the fabric have a stain-resistant finish? Is the fabric washable so you can just take off the cushion covers and wash them or dry-clean them? Does the sofa have buttons or piping which might seem like an insignificant consideration but, it is the details which add interest, if that is your preference.

So, when considering whether or

not, it is worth it, to re-upholster an out-dated or well-used family favourite, it all goes back to the basics, the bones. A good upholstery job can breathe life and transform ordinary into fabulous.

GREEN TEA MASALA CHAI RECIPE • 1 ½ CUPS WATER • 2/3 CUP VANILLA ALMOND or SOY MILK • 3 TSP GREEN TEA CHAI LEAVES • SWEETENER TO TASTE (honey, agave or maple syrup) Bring water to a simmer in saucepan.

Add tea leaves, cover, turn off the heat and steep for 3 minutes.

Add milk and sweetener.

Return to a simmer.

Strain into two cups and serve immediately.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick or a dash of ground cinnamon.

For Great Gardens: The Secret Is In The Soil

any times homeowners spend a lot of money on high quality specimens M from garden centres only to find after a short period time that their plants are not growing or blooming up to their expectations. Possibly the

problem is in the garden soil.

As is often the case, homes in newer subdivisions have a very thin layer of fertile topsoil above a very compacted subsoil base. This very situation may be the root of the problem. Good soil structure refers to the way the soil particles cling together forming small aggregates that hold water, nutrients and form the all important air spaces which in part supports the many microbial life forms as well allows any excess water to drain away.

To remedy this situation, many gardeners build raised bed gardens in various shapes and forms with soils which are rich in organic matter.

Generally speaking, the darker the soil, the higher the organic matter content. Organic matter plays an important role in soil structure. It acts as a cementing agent that binds the soil particles together as well as acting as a nutrient reservoir making minerals available to the plant roots as they require them.

It’s often said that organic material in soil consists of “the living, the recently dead and the very dead.” This is a helpful way to understand the processes that shape soil and make it fertile.

The living portion of soil is made up of plant roots, and of the numerous microbes and other living organisms that improve soil structure by breaking down organic material.

The recently dead components include deceased soil organisms, green plant material and fresh manures. They decompose readily, and release nutrients quickly.

The very dead portion is humus, the final residue of organic matter breakdown that’s important for soil structure and disease suppression.

For fertile soil, all three forms of organic matter should be present at all times. This condition may be maintained by the regular addition of compost or manure. Your garden plants will thank you for it by providing you with luscious leaf growth and bountiful blooms!

BRAIN INJURIES AFFECT ALL AGES! Part II - Adults In part II to this article, I continue discussing the materials presented at the 2nd annual brain injury workshop sponsored by the Erie Shores Brain Injury Association (ESBIA) and Bachmann Personal Injury Law, held on September 10 in Simcoe. Our second speaker, Mary Ann McEachern, a Behavior Therapist with Brain Injury Services in Hamilton, addressed difficulties encountered by adults suffering from acquired brain injuries, as well as challenges faced by their families and caregivers.

McEachern noted that brain injury can be traumatic (caused by motor vehicle crashes, sports-related trauma, etc) or non-traumatic in nature. Non-traumatic brain injury can result from diseases such as meningitis, brain tumors, aneurysm, anorexia or an event such as a diabetic coma. Brain injury is the most common disability and cause of death in adults, more common than breast cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries combined, says McEachern.

When an individual’s brain is injured, he or she will likely encounter physical, cognitive, behavioral and emotional impairments. While physical impairments can be seen and cognitive impairments are generally expected, behavioral and emotional impairments can be both subtle and difficult to deal with. Behavioral changes can include anger and aggression, impulsivity and impaired judgment, inappropriate sexual behavior, lack of social awareness and addictions. The impact of such dramatic changes on an individual’s daily living can be devastating, says McEachern. Their social relationships are severed; and their level of independence is severely curtailed if their mobility is affected or their drivers’ licence has been suspended.

Under these circumstances, McEachern notes that it is critical for family and caregivers to understand that the affected individual has changed. He or she is pretty much a “new” person and expecting the old person back is neither realistic, nor helpful. As such, the role of the family members and caregivers must change too.

Where the changes are dramatic, family and caregivers should consider the use of therapeutic groups, says McEachern. She and her co-workers run different types of groups that address issues such as self-esteem; social skills; anger management; chronic pain; substance abuse; sexuality; family education etc. Once established, the groups meet regularly to discuss the chosen topic and address concerns and questions of the attendees. McEachern stresses that attendance is voluntary and anonymous.

Forest fires can have a devastating cost to property as evidenced by the destruction of many of the railway trestles in Myra Canyon in 2003.

Thanks to volunteer efforts, this beautiful rail trail is once more accessible to the public.

During my recent visit to British Columbia, I saw much evidence of past forest fires and also saw a small one in progress. While we think of these events as catastrophic, (and in some cases, they are), forest fires are also a part of nature and some species need the heat generated by the fires to regenerate.

According to the Canadian Forest Service, Canada has about ten per cent of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forests and each year over the last decade, about 7,400 forest fires have occurred in those forests.

The total area burned varies widely from year to year, but averages about 1.9 million hectares (4.7 million acres) annually. Most fires are small and are easily suppressed or extinguish themselves. Only three per cent of all forest or other wildland fires that start each year in Canada grow to more than 200 hectares (494 acres) in area. However, these fires account for 97 per cent of the total area burned across the country.

Forest fires play an important ecological role in some forest types. While fires are relatively infrequent in the moist rainforests of the west coast, they play an important part in shaping the boreal forests found in much of the rest of the country. The tree species found in the Canadian boreal forest range from pure deciduous to mixed deciduous and coniferous to pure coniferous stands. The mosaic of species usually found in a boreal forest is largely the result of many fires occurring on the landscape over a long period of time.

Lightning strikes cause less than half of all fires in Canada, but they account for twothirds of the land area burned. One reason for this is that lightning-caused fires often occur in remote areas where there is little threat to human life and property, so the fires are often left to extinguish themselves. As well, during a lighting storm, several fires can be ignited at the same time, making it difficult to fight all the fires at once.

years of drought in the Okanagan Valley, a huge forest fire swept through the Kelowna area in 2003, burning over 250 square kilometres (25,000 hectares or 61,776 acres) of forest. After burning for two weeks, it reached the Myra Canyon trestles and in the next few days, destroyed 12 of the 16 wooden structures and damaged the two steel bridges. In addition there was damage to the trail itself, to the rock faces and to the amenities which had been built up over the previous ten years.

Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of the MCTRS and many, many volunteers, the trestles have been rebuilt, the trails and amenities have been repaired and this beautiful piece of British Columbia history and scenery is once more available to be enjoyed.

A member of the MCTRS may well say that forest fires are foes, but many a naturalist would argue that forest fires are friends and are necessary for a healthy ecosystem.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

competing species are eliminated and the amount of sunlight on the forest floor is increased. Both jack and lodgepole pine depend on fire to regenerate. Forest fires also create new habitat for some species of wildlife. For instance, the burned stumps and dead tree trunks are ideal for woodpeckers and other cavity-nesting species.

While in British Columbia I went for a bike ride on the Kettle Valley Rail trail along the rim of Myra Canyon.

A few years ago this would not have been possible.

The Kettle Valley Railway was built in the early 1900s to transport Okanagan fruit to the coast. After the trains stopped running, the trail and the trestles fell into disrepair from vandalism and neglect. In 1992, a volunteer organization, the Myra Canyon Trestle Restoration Society (MCTRS), was formed with the object of restoring the trestles to make them safer for the public.

The trestles were decked and guard rails were installed and the trail and tunnels were repaired.

The Myra Canyon became a major tourist destination for hikers and cyclists.

KALE BERRY SMOOTHIE

1 large ripe banana, peeled 2-4 kale leaves, washed stems removed 1 cup berries - Strawberries or blueberries. (fresh or frozen. Add as many greens to skillet as will fit; season with salt and pepper. Cook until wilted, tossing and adding more greens as room becomes available, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in vinegar and syrup; season with salt and pepper and serve.

FENNEL AND GRAPEFRUIT SALAD

2 large pink grapefruits 1 medium-sized fennel bulb 1 small bunch of fresh dill 1/4 cup goat cheese, crumbled Extra-virgin olive oil Freshly ground black pepper & sea salt Cut off top and bottom ends of the grapefruit.

Stand on 1 flat side. Starting at top of fruit, cut off all peel and white pith, following curve of fruit. Working over bowl, cut between membranes, releasing segments; squeeze any juice into bowl. Transfer segments to another bowl.

Cut fennel in half length-wise; remove core.

Using mandolin or sharp knife, slice fennel thinly.

Combine fennel and grape fruit segments in a large bowl, add dill & goat cheese. Arrange salad on platter. Drizzle lightly with oil, then grapefruit juice, if desired. Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper. Serve.
