Hospice Holiday Tree of By: Cindy Pichette The Holiday Season is about gathering with loved ones to celebrate the many blessings in our lives. Whether we are together to share a family meal, chatting on the phone or visiting over Zoom, we'll likely reminisce and share stories of holidays gone by with those who are no longer with us. Stories are the fabric of our lives. We are woven into a shared history of family, friends and colleagues, hopefully bringing meaning and joy to our lives. Sometimes, especially with the pressures of the season, it can be hard to remember that. The holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life" highlights the importance that each of us has in the lives of those around us. George Bailey is the story's unlikely hero, a man who, at the lowest moment of his life, is given the opportunity to see a world into which he'd never been born. By imagining his thread being removed from the story, he quickly learns the importance of his many small contributions to the lives of those around him. In doing so, he rediscovers the love and joy of just being with his friends and family. Hospice celebrates the value that each of us has – not because of things that we have done, but simply because we are. Our goal is to help every person to find the peace and comfort of realizing their value right to the end of their life. We live in an interconnected world, and each one of us has value. We celebrate each life lived. Christmas Fest was the perfect day to bring a little joy and light to Powell Park. A crowd of over a hundred, young and old, came out to share this magical moment. Santa and Mrs Claus, Mayor Krystal Chopp and Councillor Amy Martin joined us, and we were treated to a rendition of Silent Night by Shanna Rickerman and David Leko. The generosity of Mr Dave King made our Hospice Holiday Tree of Hope possible, and we hope it will serve as a beacon throughout the holiday season. The lights of Christmas in the darkest month of the year are the perfect symbol of Hospice. The Norfolk Haldimand Community Hospice has been working in our community to grow programming and ultimately to build a centre for Hospice Palliative Care to serve our two communities. We thank our community for their ongoing support, especially as we look forward to the next chapter of our Hospice's story. (Photo: Kevin Sandifer)

Thanks

By Dave Scott

We would like to close off the year by thanking the folks who continue to make the Hub a unique little magazine. A publication that keeps finding a way to tell the stories that need to be said, to offer friendly, helpful advice, and to the advertisers who, if it weren't for them, there wouldn't be a Hub. To Chris, our video man who somehow always finds just the right magic to make our videos stand out.

Charlie is the voice of reason within the pages. We are so proud of him for both his running and storytelling as he takes us with him through his journeys. Vic, I have been so lucky to call Vic a friend over these many years. His paintings have provided us with so many positive reflections of nature.

Kevin, we always hear about how much energy Kevin brings to his work and his love for the community from the folks he interviews. Barb from Dover Apothecary is always sound and

consistent with health advice from her pages - her passion for helping folks always shining through.

Mr Klassy himself, Randy Halmo, I have so much fun talking rock 'n' roll with him on our podcasts. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge. Our Just a Thought guru Cindy, with her always timely, thought-provoking quotes! Thank you to our excellent local artists for providing our amazing covers!

Margaret and Erin proofreading behind the scenes to improve my messy grammar! Des, Trevor and Lirum, bring it all together with their fantastic graphic designing!

And YOU, yes, you the reader, thanks for believing in the Hub! Monica and I wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season!

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

HOW LONG CAN I PLAY?

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” G.B. Shaw “My doctor told me that jogging could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already.” Milton Berle Each year about this time, for as long as I can remember, I start thinking about and planning for the next year. I received my first ribbons in 1951 as a first-grader in the school track meet. I got my most recent award, and possibly my last, at the Foxtrail 50-mile race this past August, 70 years later. Yet still, I want to compete. Throughout my life, sport has been a consuming passion. I have found joy and, I suppose, identity. However, although I try not to think about it, the question now lingers, “How long will I be able to play?” Accompanying it is a more concerning, “What will I do when I cannot?” How long can I continue to push the end into a future far enough in the distance that I don’t have to think about it? I strongly believe that it is important to keep putting off the end as long as possible. The upside of playing is significant. Multiple studies have concluded that to continue playing will increase happiness, well-being and life expectancy. However, the reality is that starting as early as age 35, we begin to lose about 1% of our muscle mass every year. At the same time, we become more prone to injury as our ligaments and tendons stiffen and our cartilage thins. In the meantime, our average VO2 max, the amount of oxygen our body can use during exercise, diminishes on average about 10% in our forties, 15% in our fifties and 20% in our sixties. In addition, it is all accompanied by a steady decline in reaction

time and bone density. So it would seem that our bodies are well-designed for inevitable obsolescence. It is not time that does us in as athletes and causes us to pack it in; it is injuries. We can easily decide to push on. The difficult part is coming to a decision about how much we are willing to suffer and sacrifice in order to keep doing what we wish to do. A well-known runner of my generation, Roger Robinson, said that he still takes two hours every day for his run, but now it is one hour running and one hour for a recovery nap afterwards. As humans, many of us, those who want the most out of our lives, are aspirational creatures. We are motivated by the idea that we can be better tomorrow than we are today. However, in old age, we have to come to grips with the truth that, at least physically, even if we really work at it in a knowledgeable way, our best hope is that we will only slowly get worse instead of quickly getting worse. That reality makes it more challenging to remain ambitious. It becomes more and more important to learn and understand the components of competing and playing other than physical prowess that will enable us to continue successfully. The three core elements of performance, speaking broadly, are exercise, nutrition and sleep. Even with our ever-declining physical abilities, we can target our workouts specifically for our goals, making sure we don’t slacken off to too little exercise or don’t do so much that injuries and burnout occur. We can adopt better eating habits by having more nutritious foods at more optimal times. We can sleep in a way that best allows our bodies to repair themselves. As an adult, I have been running for 45 years. It is only since 2015 that I have participated in multiday events. I began my career running track and 5k or 10k road races, before moving up to marathons and finally to ultras in the mid-1990s. My over-riding philosophy was always the slower I got, the further I went. I have now gone as far as I can with that philosophy. I now aim for the longest events on the racing calendar. The longer the event, with the corresponding slower running involved, the more it becomes about mental focus, racing strategy and practical planning. It becomes about improving the efficiencies of relentless forward progress with a minimum of

downtime. I have been very fortunate to have friends who are brilliant at crewing to help me in the longest efforts. I would simply not be capable of achieving what I have without their assistance. My biggest sports goal for 2022 is the same as it has been every year since 2015, to participate successfully at Three Days at the Fair in New Jersey in May. They have races of many distances. For the third time, I will be entered in the 6 Day. I have not been there since 2019 due to the pandemic. Since my last time there, I have only taken part in two virtual races across Tennessee and that one regular 50-mile rail-trail race this summer. I will spend time this winter preparing myself physically and logistically for an attempt at some records in New Jersey. I want to compete in events exactly as I always have. I can’t envision a time when I will lose that desire. I don’t feel that I have to do any extra mental preparation. The will is still there. The learning is an on-going process. I understand and accept more and more that what matters most is not how well I play, but that I play. That, and the joy of it all, is what keeps me going.

Mind-full Strategies For Successful WEIGHT MANAGEMENT BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist For several decades now, we have been experiencing a steady and alarming global epidemic of disturbing proportions. A controllable but dangerous trend affecting all ages, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyle situations. All incidence of chronic disease can be linked as either a causative or aggravating factor, simply to the fact that most of us do not understand what, when and how to eat, causing us to carry excess weight.

Our health is quite literally in our hands (and then our mouths), and we are rapidly becoming dangerously overweight as a society. Metabolic syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease/Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Inflammatory conditions, and so much more plague our society with unnecessary suffering and cost to our quality of life. We have generated the perfect storm to overburden our health care systems simply because we are not taught the correlations and long-term consequences of how our food choices impact our bodies. These conditions also make us more vulnerable to other viruses and bacteria we are exposed to in a myriad of ways due to lowered immune resistance and inability to recover quickly. The fantastic news is that our bodies are an absolute miracle! With education, empowerment and professional guidance, we can create healthier lives and regulate our weight with some effort and lifestyle adjustments. Developing a better relationship with the right foods to fuel the body you deserve, and the life you wish to live may be much easier than you think!

It seems very difficult to believe that most overweight people can be dangerously nutrient deficient and undernourished, on par or worse off than the impoverished and underweight. Starving for nutrition while constantly overconsuming seems a strange concept indeed!

Shifting to a smaller plate, leaving appropriate time between meals, understanding portion size, and the appropriate macronutrient balance are key elements with zero cost involved. Balanced blood sugar levels are the goal. Our global population is being fuelled by a carbohydrate craving society on a wild rollercoaster ride. I personally find it alarming to see pre-diabetic children are the fastest growing sector in our society. What does this mean for their future, and how can we guide and protect them? We have the power and the capability to make gradual, sustainable

lifestyle changes to positively influence our health and future.

Understanding what foods supply which macronutrients (major food groups), is critical to understanding what foods will fuel your optimal health goals. The majority of people are not familiar with the fact that starchy, root vegetables (things that grow underground) are actually processed like sugar by our bodies! They have the same influence as bread, pasta, rice, pastries etc. While they still offer some fibre and valuable nutrients, portion size and limiting the number of portions is very important to avoid “tipping the scales”. More explained on this in the video! Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates are all necessary components, but an appropriate balance may be all you need to reduce symptoms and allow your body to correct or prevent chronic health issues. Curing and healing, terminology restricted to the medical community, BUT never underestimate that they are powers each and every one of our bodies are geared for, and we can move toward when we understand how to fuel ourselves.

Scan this month’s QR code to view the video pertaining to the topic and learn more about better carb choices!

At Dover Apothecary and in my home practice, we aim to guide our clients with the most up to date scientifically evidenced practices and information. I am very excited to announce that I have updated my training to include Metabolic Balance Coaching services. Clients will now have the opportunity to join this program as individuals or in a group format.

Regulating weight is a bonus of the program. Hormone balance and restoring metabolic function means less inflammation, more vitality and energy, better cardiovascular health, and less medication reliance. I will be taking the leap personally, as between post-menopause and pandemic lockdowns, my body says it’s time to get back on track too! The program includes blood work and a personalized food plan with a 4 phase system tailored specifically to your needs. Hope you will join me. Group size will be very limited so inquire early! To learn more, or for information on program details and costs, contact Barb Anstead NNCP at 519-410-3544 or email barb@healthywellandwise.ca.

Speaking of which, this month's line of Point Zero warm winter puffer coats, with an assortment of colours, come rated up to -15° Celsius for those blustery January days (a great gift for the Mrs!). Every coat needs a warm cozy scarf for function and fashion, and Sassyfras has a vast selection from Cherie Bliss. Don't leave that shopping to the last minute. Stop by Sassyfras today and take advantage of all the classy clothing and distinguished jewellery that will be a guaranteed winner under the tree this year! Thank you, ladies.
