DON LAWSON, COMMUNITY RELATIONS by Kevin Rockefeller I am here with Don Lawson from Community Living (CL) Access. We are here to discuss the 2021 Lottery CASH Calendar that will soon be available for sale.

AND THE

Kevin: What is the focus of the calendar this year? Don: We have changed the focus of the calendar this year because of COVID-19. COVID-19 has put a lot of stress on everyone this year. We want to help our community’s businesses stay healthy and vibrant, and we can do that by shopping and playing locally. That is our focus of the calendar this year. Furthermore, you can win lots of cash! There are only 1050 calendars printed each year and draws are held every Friday. Kevin: Where do the proceeds from the calendar go?

Don: The proceeds help CL Access keep the people we support connected and engaged within the community. The monies help support programs like ‘Healthy Relationships,’ and help with unexpected costs, for example - immediate emergency housing, broken appliances, and vehicles. There are so many areas that our fundraisers help the agency. All of our fundraisers are so important. Kevin: Where can you go to purchase a calendar? Don: You can purchase the calendars right on our website http://www.communitylivingaccess.ca/lottery-calendar/ from this page you can purchase calendars online. Kevin: How much are the calendars, and can a person win more than once? Don: The calendars are $20 each, and there are 52 chances to win. After your name is drawn, it goes back into the spinning drum for another chance to win. There are many chances to win: one $1300 prize, two $300 prizes, twelve $200 draw, (one each month), and all other draws are $100. That’s $8000 in prizes to be won. I want to say that community Living Access has helped me through the years, and I would not be where I am today without you. I highly recommend everyone purchase a calendar!! They make great gifts and stocking stuffers. Buying local is a great thing! Thanks Don Lawson from Community Living Access. All proceeds from the calendar go to a great agency!!

THE PACE OF LIFE IN 2021 By: Dave Scott

Well, 2020 is almost in the books, and we hope 2021 brings us a new beginning. It is very easy to look back on 2020 and wish it never happened, but it did, and now is the time for all of us to move on. We have all learned a great deal about ourselves and society, now we need to take that information and use it to our advantage! With the new year, folks will most likely be making a lot more New Year's resolutions than usual. Maybe we should start thinking now about what our focus will be on in 2021. You control your 2021 health destiny, now it's time to write the next chapter! For a lot of folks, health and exercise are their number one priorities. I suggest starting by getting out for a daily walk. You don't need your resolution to be a marathon, but rather to be realistic to fit your current needs (you can walk for a few months, then think bigger if you wish). Start slow, get some good boots, proper warm clothes and begin with easy walks around your neighbourhood. Getting outside with the fresh air will make your day a lot brighter, and soon neighbours will be joining you (remember 6 feet apart). With exercise, you will be surprised how easy it is to adjust to a healthy diet. A lot of folks hurry in from their a walk and feel the need to reward themselves with a sugar snack. Stop right there! Reward yourself with a healthy snack, and your body will thank you later. So now that you are exercising and eating right, hmmm guess what, your whole mental health approach will be much happier and longer-lasting. The days (even in the middle of winter) will seem much brighter! Funny how a little thing like a daily walk can be just the medicine you need to start on the way to a healthy, happy, stronger 2021 for you and your loved ones! PS. Check out the In Long Run article by Charlie Upshall in this month's Hub for great winter walking clothing ideas!

12/13 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS‌

...we're back! Last year at this time Hub Media, One Media and Rainey Media all worked together to create a fun version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. We were overwhelmed with the response from all of Norfolk County! If you haven't seen the video here is the YouTube link https://youtu.be/Jz6tEG_Bh8Q The concept was simple, to showcase local businesses through the story! We had so much fun we are working on another video this year based around the 12, oh wait, I mean 13 days of Christmas! We knew we needed to create another exciting Christmas themed video this year. With everything everyone has had to endure, a little laughter can go a long way in helping light that Christmas spirit. I want to thank all the businesses who did not hesitate to jump on board and participate this year. Our theme again is to shop locally and help all our small businesses have a wonderful Christmas. As small business folks ourselves, we understand the struggles that have come with the pandemic and how you need to be able to adjust on the fly to keep your business going!

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THE COVID WINTER “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was within me an invincible summer.” Albert Camus “Now is the winter of our discontent…” W. Shakespeare This winter will likely be the most challenging of our lives, due to the impact of the coronavirus. Every indication is that the pandemic will worsen dramatically through the dark, cold months before spring. We normally spend more time indoors during the winter and are likely to be indoors, even more, this year because of COVID restrictions. There will be fewer activities to draw you away from home, with strict limits on the size of indoor and outdoor gatherings as well. We will not dine out as often, visit our friends, sit in arenas, go skating, take in a movie and so on. Both our mental and physical health may well be adversely affected if we do not plan strategies to combat sitting around in our dwellings excessively. There is strong research making it clear that being outdoors is a major benefit to our mental and physical well-being. If we are not proactive beginning now, it will be a stressful, unhealthy winter. My feeling is, if you have not already done so, you need to set up and implement a program before the weather becomes a real issue. Hopefully, there is something you like to do outdoors at this time of year, whether it be running, walking, snowshoeing, dog walking, skiing or anything else that gets you outside and

moving. If you are like me, it helps immensely to have a goal to work towards. For many, the secret to consistency is having a friend or friends (at a safe distance), with whom to share your activity. If you know you are meeting a person at a certain time, that will get you out the door. The first step is the most difficult. I often say I will only do 5k, for example, but once I am moving, it becomes easier to aim for more. The biggest challenges to having a regular outdoor winter routine are the cold, the wind, the conditions underfoot and often the darkness. The main factor to address is the weather, usually specifically the cold temperature. Many have heard the well-worn cliché, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” You should not feel cold if you are not standing still. Your natural physiology tries to protect you from the cold. As your skin cools, you experience vasoconstriction (the constriction of blood vessels), commonly in the hands, feet and parts of the face. This keeps warm blood protectively near your core. In addition, some people have higher cold intolerance than others. This may be due to low body fat, chronically high stress or anxiety, disorders of the part of the brain responsible for temperature control, and anemia. How do we dress to ward off the cold? Many technological improvements in outdoor clothing have been introduced during my lifetime. I will address preparing for winter generally and for my sport of running specifically. For my upper body, I prefer a base layer of merino wool. It keeps me warm and dry by absorbing sweat, and it is also odour resistant. Poly blends also do the job. I add a second layer of a technical t-shirt. When it is very cold, I use a third layer of a sleeveless fleecy to keep my core temperature up, particularly if I am walking not running. On top is a windproof jacket. I find that raising or lowering the zipper is useful for adjusting my heat requirements. Personally, I like all the layers to be a bit loose to avoid constriction of body parts. On the other hand, many choose to wear a fitted size so cold is less likely to sneak in. The least body heat

gets to the extremities, so I wear a toque and add a balaclava or buff in severe conditions. I use mitts rather than gloves for greater warmth and go to ski mitts when it is seriously cold. Many people utilize hand warmers inside their mittens as well. On my legs, I wear winter running pants with short tights underneath or long tights for maximum warmth. I like thick wool socks and prefer Hoka Speedgoat shoes, which have Goretex uppers and tremendous grip. Perhaps even wearing a mask outdoors this year might help keep you warmer and healthier! It is important to remember to maintain normal fluid and electrolyte balances when doing the winter workouts. Even though you won’t want to, drink as much as you do in the summer when you sweat more. Try to head into the wind on your way out and have the wind at your back on the return. It’s best to avoid running into the wind when you are more tired and sweaty because you will chill quickly.

After you complete your workout, it is vital to not be wet and cold. If necessary, be quick to change out of any damp layers and get into dry clothes. A hot drink can also help. Remember that your core temperature will drop if you remain outside. If you have to drive, a heated car seat is a nice bonus. If you are still cold when you get home, you could treat yourself to a nice hot bath or shower. It will be a healthier winter for you if you utilize the Lynn Valley Trail Association membership drive slogan – Let’s Get Movin’

Every year my favourite thing about Christmas was dance. As a kid, I loved the Christmas concert, it was always a fun night of music, dance and smiles. As I got older and stopped dancing because of health issues, I kept the tradition alive by going to see The Nutcracker when I was away at university. Some years I took someone with me but others I often went on my own. I won’t lie, the first year that I was in the audience and not on stage hurt, my body could no longer handle dancing, it was too dangerous with the number of falls I was experiencing and the pain I was in. It wasn’t until the third year that I was in the audience watching The Nutcracker at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa that it hit me that though everything had changed, I was wasting time moping about what had been lost instead of being thankful for what I had been given. Just because my legs couldn’t dance anymore didn’t mean that my heart couldn’t. I will be honest I shed a couple tears watching that performance, but I did so with a smile because I realized that I had been mourning something that I had never actually lost. I had been so focused on the neurologist who told me that I would never dance again that I thought that was it, that was just the end. That dance was dead in my life. He was wrong, though. I didn’t need my legs to remember how to dance, I needed my heart. Any dancer worth their salt will tell you that dance is about so much more than just the technicality of the moves and steps, it’s about heart, it’s about telling a story without ever uttering a single word. It’s putting movement to music and creating a story so compelling that the reader just can’t help but feel the sound and the story. That Christmas, I gave myself the best gift of all, acceptance of where my body was at. Just because I was physically unable to get up on that stage and dance didn’t mean that dance was dead. Like a dam had been broken, I could see steps in my mind when I listened to music again. Sure I couldn’t actually recreate those steps with my legs, but I didn’t care because the worlds of music and movement were colliding once again in my head and rolling through my heart. The truth was dance had never actually left my brain or my heart, I had just been so focused on the negative instead of embracing the positive. This Christmas I won’t be on a stage or in an audience, nobody will be this holiday season, but that doesn’t mean that dance is gone and dead. It just means we have to make sure to hold it in our hearts. Lyme disease didn’t come anywhere close to taking dance away from me, so COVID sure as heck isn’t going to. Since no one is dancing on stage this season, that means there needs to be more dancing in kitchens, in living rooms, in front of decked-out trees and underneath sprigs of mistletoe. Dancing is a simple and beautiful way to spread joy this holiday season because anyone can do it no matter how diversely their body and brain functions. Sometimes something as simple as twirling under the night sky is all you need to renew your faith.

- F a c t s A b o u t C a n a d i a n C h r i s t m a s Tr a d i t i o n s Here are some facts about Canadian Christmas celebrations, customs and traditions. CHRISTMAS IN CANADA has many different customs and traditions because of the country’s diverse population. THE SANTA CLAUS PARADE has been held every Christmas in Toronto since 1905. Almost 1,800 people take part in the parade, and about 500,000 people line the parade route. EVERY CHRISTMAS, HOMES IN LABRADOR CITY in Newfoundland have a Christmas lights competition. Homeowners also try to outdo each other with huge ice sculptures and light displays in their gardens. ALSO POPULAR IS THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AT NIAGARA FALLS. The waterfalls are decorated with over 2 million lights, and visitors can also enjoy concerts and fireworks over the falls. TURKEY OR HAM IS THE TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MEAL for most English speaking Canadians. Other popular seasonal foods include mince pies, plum pudding and a rich Christmas fruit cake. ATTENDING MIDNIGHT MASS is customary among French speaking Canadians, as well as attending feasts on Christmas Eve. A stew made from pigs’ feet is a traditional Christmas meal in parts of Quebec. EVERY YEAR, THE CANADIAN PROVINCE OF NOVA SCOTIA gives a Christmas tree to the US city of Boston. The tree is in appreciation for help given by Boston residents after a ship exploded in Halifax in 1917. MUMMERING IS A POPULAR TRADITION at Christmas in Canada, in parts of Newfoundland. Children go from door to door, sing and dance, and are given snacks and a drink. COOKIE, OR BISCUIT BAKING PARTIES are very popular in Canada around Christmas. Cookies are baked and recipes are exchanged, and each person at the party leaves with a selection of cookies. IN QUEBEC, PEOPLE CELEBRATE EPIPHANY on January 6. One tradition is baking a cake with a bean in it, and whoever finds the bean is named the king or queen of the feast. Online Source: James Christmas https://primaryfacts.com

To stay in your bubble To change our way of life As 2020 draws to a close and we reflect upon the year, what will stick with you? The list above is just some of the wild things we have learned to accept and adapt to in 2020. It was not easy, and for the foreseeable future, it will most likely have to continue on this way. For myself, 2020 reminded me just how valuable life is and how quickly everything can change. Some of us have lost friends to COVID. It has shaken us to our core and put the priority back on wrapping ourselves in our families and staying close! That would be the biggest lesson for me this year, keep the ones you love close and remember to make the best of every day you have because that is all we truly have! Have a grateful Christmas and an optimistic New Year!

COLD & FLU SEASON 2020 STYLE

PART

T WO

BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

SAY NO TO SUGAR!

MANY STRATEGIES WILL NEVER CHANGE: MAKE NUTRITION YOUR STRONG POINT The age-old adage, “A strong offence is your best defence,” holds very true when it comes to our overall immune health. Basic, solid nutrition, is the best building block for a robust immune system. Supplying your body daily with plenty of servings of nutrientdense whole foods, full of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and phytonutrients, will offer you a base to keep your body functioning well. Fresh, colourful vegetables and fruit, whole grains, nuts and seeds, soups, stews and salads galore - don’t skimp on these ingredients in your recipe for good health!

DON’T IGNORE THE BASICS: EXERCISE, SLEEP, HYDRATION, STRESS AND TLC Our nutrition is a large part of the equation, but we can’t ignore the importance of good sleep habits when it comes to our health and immunity. Washing your hands frequently with warm, soapy water and maintaining good personal hygiene will always be in style! Staying well hydrated with plenty of good clean water, fresh air and exercise, loving supportive relationships and managing our stress levels are other very important components that can influence our immune resistance. Seniors, the very young, those with immune-compromised systems, individuals on certain medications, families with low-income and those suffering social isolation are very vulnerable. These individuals tend to experience greater severity of symptoms and increased risk of exposure.

Sugar, ultra-processed foods and high carbohydrate diets are linked to poor immune response. Consumption of even small amounts of sugar can reduce your immune response by 50%. If you combine that with other risk factors such as lack of sleep and high stress and being in a high exposure area, you can understand that you are putting your body in a precarious situation.

Many other effective supplements are also available if symptoms are already present. Elderberry and Echinacea, Goldenseal, Mushroom extracts, white Willow Bark and NAC, are a few you may be familiar with. Knowing how much to take, how often, and whether it is safe for all members of your family is important. Many products are contraindicated with certain medications, and conditions so always get professional advice to ensure these products are right for you. Have A Healthy Happy Holiday Season! ENJOYING CHRISTMAS During A Pandemic

It's unlikely most Canadians will enjoy a holly, jolly Christmas season of big family dinners, parties and travelling, according to our public health experts. Recently, Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed the bleak outlook for Christmas by noting "People are tired, but we’ve got to give them hope. We need something to look forward to. Let’s all work together and make Christmas happen.” He continued to say, “Let's always think of the glass as half full, not half empty -- we can do it. We will do it by working together." Instead of focusing on the Christmas we won’t have, or the Christmas we’re used to, we can focus our thoughts on how we can make the best of enjoying the one we're going to have this year. Yes, the holidays are going to be a little (a lot) different this year. But that doesn't mean Christmas is cancelled. Different doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. It’s our new reality in the time of COVID. If you’re still feeling the holiday spirit, you can make this time of year just as special even while safely distanced. Here’s how. It’s so easy to focus on what we can’t do right now, but many aspects of the holidays can still happen, just as they always have. You can still deck out your house for Christmas, or make that special traditional Christmas recipe and have a delicious dinner within your household. You can send cards or baked goodies to your family and friends. You can drive around town and look at everyone else’s holiday decorations. There are so many possibilities during the magical holiday season! Stay positive by getting really excited about all the things you can still do and put your energy into them. Remember 2020 is almost on its way out. We’re closer to the COVID vaccine being a reality. We need something to look forward to and keep that hope alive. Happy Holidays from all of us at CMHA Brant Haldimand Norfolk!
