AUGUST 2020

Living in the day As I sit on my back deck enjoying the warmth of the summer sun with just a hint of southwest wind creating a gentle breeze, a small spider hurries his way to the edge of my homemade mini table. I watch as he seems to check out my cold glass filled with a perfect beverage for this kind of day. I have just returned from a short trip up to Barry’s Bay, where I visited our son who spends his summers as a whitewater kayak instructor and a raft guide. It is a rather cool experience for him at Madawaska Kanu Centre (MKC). He lives on a deck, with a metal roof cover, on the edge of the woods. Of course, the walls consist of bug netting. He has his guitar and his telescope for the glistening dark nights. The whole MKC staff is a hard-working team. Their days are long on the river, filled with paddling and surfing, ensuring the safety of their clients while creating life long memories for the folks who come for the courses. Attention to detail is critical for all the staff. From the kitchen crew to the guides, they work as a one. The diversity of personalities that make up the MKC staff is truly a taste of Canadienne; a team from across the country, coming together to create an awesome Whitewater experience for all ages!

COVID rules were being followed to the utmost. I had an opportunity to sit at a cosy outdoor area with members of the staff. They were all in their 20’s and happy to include me in their conversation (they didn’t shun the old guy, and they offered me some homemade blueberry pie !!!). Sitting, listening and observing, it was easy to see how quickly they had come to rely on each other, how communication is paramount, and how the bonds with each other are strong. The goals are common, while their individual personalities are still allowed to flourish and grow with respect within the MKC paddling community. I understand why my son loves working there. They truly understand the value of being a tight-knit paddling family. They have each other’s back! After five months of COVID, it was a joy to see these young men and women doing what they love while helping folks escape from these new-world realities for a day or two. We all need to start appreciating our young adults and taking a little more stock in living in the day!

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THE THIRD QUARTER IS THE TOUGHEST “The month of July had turned into a griddle where the days just lay there and sizzled.” ~ S. M. Kidd It is 9:30 pm on yet another steamy July day. I am walking my dog through the quiet neighbourhood streets. The air feels stale and heavy. There is not even the suggestion of a breeze. My t-shirt sticks to me. The pavement is unforgiving and dusty. I am a bit sore and stiff. Nothing is lively except for the sparkly fireflies darting about in the near darkness. It is almost the end of another day in the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee. I have been running and walking for over twelve weeks, and there is still more than a month to go. So far, there have been zero rest days taken.

When we get home, I’ll get dinner for the dog and for myself, catch the news, input my race mileage for today and go off to bed. Tomorrow morning when it starts to get light, I will rise and begin preparations to head out the door for a full morning of walking with my friend and fellow participant Cathy. Presently, that is my routine, week after week.

Several people have asked the deceptively simple question, “Will you be glad when it’s over?” The answer is not straight forward. For all the heat, the beating sun, the humidity, the thirst, the sweat, the hard asphalt, the endless repetition, the very long hours, the sore knees and feet, I know I will miss it when it’s over. I made a commitment to myself to do the triple crossing, 3066 km. It is important to me that I honour that commitment and that I achieve at least that distance. With each passing day, it matters less what others might think about what I am doing. I may be somewhat eccentric. Most people would never consider entering the race. Few of them

comprehend what we are doing. It is unlikely I will ever meet anyone who completely grasps how I am spending the COVID summer. It is my odyssey. Even if I am a bit unsure why I am doing it, I am personally bound to finishing what I started.

Most of the 21,000 participants in this epic virtual race have the goal of crossing the state of Tennessee, a race distance of just over 1000 km. Of those who have finished with enough time to aim higher, many are striving to obtain the 1000 mile pin. Some are chasing a double crossing. Fewer still are planning to push right through those barriers to simply see how far they can get by August 31. I am one of those, and each week I move up in the standings as racers drop to the wayside, having reached their goals or being defeated by issues generally involving physical or mental exhaustion.

I know many runners and walkers, but I don’t personally know anyone who has ever done between 15 km and 40 km every day for what has now been three months for me. There have been no days off. It is a fascinating mental challenge, and July is the toughest month. At July’s end, the event will be three quarters finished. However, I will still be over four weeks, likely about 900 kilometres for me, from the end. July continues to have the heat and humidity, adding immeasurably to the toll of walking and running up to six hours each day. As Lazarus Lake, the race director, has written:

we all have our own targets. only we know what they are. We will only have to answer to ourselves in the end and many of us will fail because it is a long, hard road and we can only win one day at a time. i can’t promise I won’t quit but I can swear to myself that I will not quit today. this is what we came for. In every one of us is the strength to win to find that greatness in ourselves. in every one of us there is the potential to give up. this is what we came for to find out, in this moment, what we will do. So you can see that it is not easy to decide whether I will be glad when it’s over. I have come far, but the finish is still in the distance. I signed up so that I could experience these days. I signed up so that I

could find out what is in me. Have I got what it takes when the going gets tough? Can I handle a grinding mental challenge? I want to find out that I still have that strength within myself. July is a worthy testing ground.

I remind myself that a little bit of summer is what a whole year is all about. I am experiencing a simple, stripped-bare summer with no luxuries or distractions. When all is considered, for me, the answer is that I will miss the Great Virtual Race when it is finished. I will be ready to move on, but I am not wishing it to be over. I am comfortable with how I feel; it is a good place to be.

THE MAN WHO LOVED ME FIRST BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

In every article, there are pieces of me and my passion for educating and empowering others. In each of them, you will find many elements and flavours - many parts science, so very many amazing pieces of anecdotal triumphs and experiences (my own and my amazing clients), a neverending desire to assist others in their quest for optimal health and wellness and of course a lot of intuition as that is also part of the framework of Holistic Health. 2020 has challenged most of us in ways we could never conceive of, on so very many levels. For many, it will have changed us profoundly. July 18, 2020, I lost my Dad - the first man to hold me, tell me he loved me unconditionally and wholeheartedly and did his best to keep me safe. He taught me independence. I learned the value of listening before I speak and to try my hardest to hold my words until I could speak my truth without anger or spite. He taught me the beauty of learning and to think independently, always work hard, do your best and to never, ever put anything else before family. He was not perfect, none of us are - there are many times I was frustrated with him as I’m certain he was with me. I thought somehow that with my knowledge and experience that understanding the gravity of his condition would somehow make the inevitable less painful, that somehow it might not hurt quite this much. Attempting to explain to family and friends the many hurdles and obstacles he was up against, what the surgeries were about, the medications, the very nature of his condition and all of the heroic attempts at intervention by the medical staff, I hoped it would prepare me somehow and soften the blow. It did not. The very powerlessness to help this man who loved me first is like a sucker punch to the gut that has knocked the wind out of me temporarily. On a good day, I

get my steadfast determination from my Dad - on bad days, it is a stubbornness that simply isn’t pretty. We shared that, he and I. Throughout life, in the end, it is always the dreaded complications that bring us down. Those were my grandmother’s incredibly wise words. Dad was hospitalized on June 28 with a bowel obstruction. Due to his age and other health concerns, the least invasive measures were implemented first. July 1, he was transferred to Welland for emergency surgery. Almost five hours later, his dedicated team of doctors had pulled him through. Adhesions from a previous surgery, an internal hernia, the obstruction in his small intestine, re-section, all were successful, even when a rupture occurred above the repair after closing and they heroically went in and repaired that as well. Sadly, the complications of post-surgical infection, an abscess developing in his abdomen, so many medications, antibiotics, and interventions - this dear, proud man with a constitution so strong and a love for his family so fierce, lost his fight and slipped off in his sleep. I ask that each of you advocate for yourselves and take care of your health. Recognize the importance of changes in your bowel habits and other digestive issues. You know better than anyone, what is normal for you. Check out your bowel movements, if they look different or change in frequency, these are symptoms and opportunities to investigate. Digestive health issues are the focus of my practice. For the love of life and all who hold you dear, get answers from a qualified health professional, don’t mask problems. Thank you for holding space for me as I share my story. Hope to see you soon! Barb Anstead NNCP Dover Apothecary – 519-583-3784 customerservice@doverapothecary.ca

Racism is a systemic issue in Canada that increases the risk of mental health problems and mental illness in persons who are experiencing it. Stigma, discrimination and racism have significant impacts on one’s mental health. The Canadian Mental Health Association has always had a vision of mental health for all. Guided by this vision, we pride ourselves in advocating for and enhancing equity in the services that we offer, the programs we design, and the clients our branch assists every day. Our work has always been grounded in an understanding of the social determinants of health; freedom from discrimination and violence is a key determinant of mental health. We believe the experience of positive mental health is not possible in a society, within Ontario or across Canada, where racism exists, at the interpersonal, institutional and systemic levels. Racism

Serving the Eye Care Needs of Norfolk County Since 1947 As we get older, almost everyone will have difficulty adjusting to see close objects. This means reading glasses, bifocals, or progressive eyeglasses become a reality for many. If you wear contact lenses, you may be frustrated with using additional reading glasses to see up close. New contact lens technology offers many options to replace your reading glasses or bifocals. Multifocal contact lenses offer the best of both worlds: freedom from glasses, along with good near and distance vision.

has detrimental and long-lasting impacts on mental health. Racism is a public health issue and must be addressed as such. The events that have taken place recently have shown us that we need to do more and that we need to do better. We stand with those who continue to speak out. We know that there are countless others who are still not being heard, and many injustices are still being carried out. It is impossible for us to envision a society that embraces the mental health of all people without investing in the solutions to address these inequities. As we have said before, equity matters for mental health, and mental health matters for equity. CMHA is committed to confronting racism and advocating for greater equity in mental health in the communities we serve. We have a responsibility and an opportunity to advocate for justice and change and mental health for all.
