These are just some of the cool facts you can discover when you listen to our podcast (Boomer Music Experience). Check it out at HubMedia.info With the recent passing of "The Gambler" Kenny Rogers, Randy suggested that we do one of our audio podcasts on the late superstar. I was amazed when Randy educated me on the vast musical past of one Kenneth Donald Rogers. Born August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas living in a federal housing project with six siblings, the family was financially challenged.

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THE GREAT VIRTUAL RACE ACROSS TENNESSEE 1000K Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell, the creator of the infamous Barkley Marathons, was at home working on a 9,000 piece jigsaw puzzle of the world to pass the time while adhering to the pandemic strategy staying at home. With all running races around the globe currently cancelled, he thought maybe many other runners might be as bored and in need of a focus as he was. An idea began germinating. With his friend Steve, he came up with the concept of a virtual race across his home state. The route for the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee 1000K, actually 1021.68 km, starts in Arkansas, just outside the southwest corner of Tennessee. It follows the Mississippi River across the border and then travels through Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville, until it hits the Tennessee – Virginia border at the northeast tip of the state, more than 634 miles later. Cantrell decided that competitors would have four months, from May 1 until August 31, to complete the challenge. The mileage would be completed wherever you happened to live, either walking or running. In order to count, the miles had to be intentional and purposeful. Distance covered by counting steps during the full day, miles cycled or swum, etc. would not be eligible. By giving four months in order to finish, the event would be achievable for most people. One would need to average a little over 5 miles or 8 kilometres per day for the 123 days. The creators only had a few days to prepare. The idea had taken shape on April 22, and the race was to start May 1. They did not imagine they would have any difficulties as they estimated they would have between 100 and 200 entrants. Wrong! There are over 19,000 sign-ups, from 77 countries. The organizers are still refining and building better recording and tracking systems, and it is now late May. The concept fascinated people everywhere, long-distance runners and many others as well. All revenues from the $60 entry fee that are not needed for race expenses will be split evenly

among food banks in the largest cities across the state.

My friend Don told me about the race the last weekend of April while he was in the neighbourhood walking his dog. He said he was going to sign up. Initially, the idea of a virtual race didn’t inspire me. However, after dinner that night, I googled the race website. The more I thought about it, the keener I got. I had found my summer running plan. In short order, I learned I had a lot of company right in Port Dover. From our community, the following have signed up for the Great Race: Tania Babin, Don Bonnett, Scot Brockbank, Gail Crossman, Bob Gordon, Elaine Gordon, Cathy Hughes, Tammie Johnson, Berni Kerr, Sandy Miller, Nancy Norton, Iyla Norton, Courtney Pepper, Sheila Stewart, Chris Veska, Ben Zanstra, Karen Zanstra and myself. Don and I are doing the double, travelling out and back across the state – 2000 km. All participants have to check in once a day on the website so that our daily miles/kilometres can be recorded and tracked. The event is being run on the honour system and, hopefully, that is being adhered to by all. There are no additional awards given for going faster. I believe the virtual to be a brilliant substitute for all the ultra races that have been cancelled this year, including Cantrell’s The Last Vol State 500k, an actual race across Tennessee that normally takes place in the heat of the summer. As the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee website puts it, “Best of all, you can sleep in your own bed instead of ditches and cemeteries; and eat at your own table instead of living off filling station food… unless, of course, you want to add to the realism by sleeping in the yard and eating out of your family garbage can.”

Just like magic, my motivation problem for running/ walking in the year of the pandemic has been solved. We input our mileage, and the next day we can track our progress in a variety of ways by clicking “Looking At Your Progress.” I like to use the Tracking Report – PDF, which shows Position, Name, Age, Miles/Km, Location, % complete and miles for each day. You can also follow yourself across a map on-screen. Because I have been an ultrarunner for many years, I know many of the competitors toward the top of the list. It is interesting to follow their progress.

I have adapted well to the concept and how it is preparing me for a return to actual long-distance races in the future. So far, in over three weeks, I have never done less than 22 km in a day, and my body is getting used to being out for gradually longer periods of time, generally over three hours every morning and a little extra later in the day. I am starting to do a bit more

running each week, but the majority of my distance is completed with purposeful walking. I get in good quality walking with my friend and long-time North Shore walking coach Cathy Hughes. She is really into the challenge as well. The time passes quite easily and enjoyably.

I am hopeful that 6 Days At The Fair in New Jersey, now rescheduled for September 28 – October 4, will take place. This virtual race is shaping up to be a perfect training regimen for me. However, even if 6 Days does not take place, or if there is still a travel ban, I am very happy to be taking part in such an awesome, unique virtual race with so many people. Already more total distance has been covered by the participants than in any running competition in history. I am thinking of it as our running/walking generation’s Woodstock.

SENSIBLE, RESPONSIBLE IMMUNE HEALTH

BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

2020 – A Spring Like No Other MODERATION AND BALANCE IN ALL AREAS OF OUR LIVES HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE IMPORTANT. Self-educating is an empowering way to cope with the challenges being faced by our world currently – each of us has the opportunity to “be the watchdog – not the sheep,” while we are responsibly supporting one another through this unprecedented time. Amidst the uncertainties, my views, experience and education remain unchanged on what a miracle our bodies are. The innate wisdom each of us can tap into and optimize is fascinating and reassuring if we embrace this as an opportunity to educate ourselves from reliable sources. Are you becoming overwhelmed or intimidated by the media headlines and social media? I challenge and encourage each of you to spend equal time on credible, science-based research to discover how your immune system develops and operates in this world of microbes, viruses and bacteria. Consider booking a consult to review your lifestyle and overall nutrition or to assist with stress coping strategies. Knowledge equals power as we need to become aware – living in fear, and inaction does not serve any of us. TECHNOLOGY, LIFESTYLE AND NUTRITION – A PERFECT COMBINATION As a Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioner, many of you have heard me discuss the Canadian Neuro Technology product developments that have become a natural and hugely impactful addition to my practice – for myself, my family and my clients. Healthy scepticism was my first response to being introduced to these technologies. With 30+ years in the Natural Health industry, my expectations for high quality, effective and scientifically validated products for my clients and family is an unwavering and non-negotiable quest. Not surprisingly, there was a healthy degree of scepticism when first introduced to this HPT Technology. This created

an initial delay in sharing while investigating the science thoroughly, conversing with other practitioners and using the wearable tech personally, on family and close friends. Four months of personal compliance with the tech and the results and experiences were undeniable, the applications and potential for health support and improvement, simply mind-blowing. We now have options to optimize immune function, metabolic function and improve sleep. It is a critically important time to share these options with my clients as I witness the supportive health benefits myself and others are experiencing that align with my practice ideals. Finally, time to embrace being part of an awe-inspiring mission to share this tech with 1 billion people!!! HOMEOSTASIS = BALANCE A nutrient-dense diet using quality, whole, natural foods, supports our bodies with cellular nutrients that enable us to function optimally and direct our energy better. When we eat low nutrient, highly processed foods, we cause our bodies to work much harder simply to repair the damage we are causing and eliminate toxins etc. Poor food choices, alcohol, smoking, poor stress response, too little water (you get the idea) all upset the delicate balance our bodies work to maintain. In a word, it’s all about HOMEOSTASIS. A state of balance – balance facilitates all forms of communication. When we are in balance, we simply function better, we expend less energy on damage control and repair processes, conserving valuable resources so that we can expend more energy on enjoying life. Fast forward to the remarkable discovery of a technology that revolves around the development of a tactile pattern (delivered via specific wearable products). These different patterns, when applied to specific sensory receptor sites on the body, have been identified, scientifically validated, tested and proven effective in allowing our brains to enter a state

It is recognized that no one modality or program is a stand-alone therapy. We explore and research science-

based avenues to offer the best and understand that as individuals, we are each absolutely unique, in our genetic makeup, our environmental exposures and of course, our responses to things. For these reasons, the way we experience new things will vary as well. If I have piqued your interest, I invite you to investigate and advocate for supporting and improving your own health and wellness along with those you love by educating and empowering yourself – research this tech, ask me questions, book a consult! The science is there, it is clear, unequivocal and changing lives in wonderful ways. Each and every day, sharing information on health and nutrition, along with this technology, brings me joy. Sharing with others to tap into our individual potential for supporting wellness and optimizing our quality of life is an amazing and gratifying path. The lens inside our eye contains protein that is arranged in a precise way to keeps the lens clear. As we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. What symptoms might I notice if I

As the sun sets

and life draws to a close, the only things you truly leave behind for your family are their memories of you, the values you instilled in your children, and the characteristics of yourself that show through in your children. You raise your kids to be good people, to help and care for one another, to have a strong sense of who they are and understand the true value of family. For the past month, I have watched as a mother robin prepared a nest just outside our bedroom window. It was a rather cool nest sitting atop a cradle of kayak paddles, perched in among the paddle shafts and when the wind would blow, the paddles would sway gently back and forth, creating a unique swing. Well soon enough, there were eggs, and the mother took great pride in keeping those eggs safe and warm. One morning we woke to find two baby robins peering back at us, beaks open waiting for mom to return with food. It was like they were watching us as we watched them. Day after day they grew until they began walking out on the paddle shafts, wings flapping as the mother robin swooped about, encouraging them to take flight. You could see they were nervous and excited, and suddenly just like that, they left the

nest. It was easy to spot the mother robin on the lawn, still keeping an eye out for her youngsters. For the most part, the mom's job was complete. The kids followed her around for a few days and then were off on their own. I was amazed at the robin's inherent instincts to take care of her family, nurture her children, and set them on the right path. Which brings me to the second part of this story, Anna, my mother-in-law. Anna had a strong character, was fiercely independent, and one of the most competitive people I have ever met. She had a big laugh and could often be seen wearing a mischievous smile when playing cards. Our kids loved when Oma (Anna) stopped by for dinner. Soon the cards were out, and Oma turned up the charm and the competition! Her light would shine brightest in these moments! Anna had a cancer scare a few years back, and she and I took a few trips down to the cancer centre in Hamilton together. It really provided an opportunity for us to get to know one another better. At first, I was cautious with my words, but I soon realised that Anna liked things straight forward, no beating around the bush. If she didn't agree with you, she told you, and for me, that worked just fine! In those conversations, I came to understand her youth and how it shaped who she was and her strong ties to her family. It helped me understand that survival, independence and her competitive edge had been instilled in her at an early age. As for her own children, it was old school love, she cared deeply for all of them and expressed it with hugs and tons of food!

Anna passed away a few days before Mother's Day. It hit everyone in the family hard and opened our eyes to just how fleeting life is. As for Anna's character and her values, I see them shine through every day in my family: my daughter's never-give-up spirit, my son's fierce independence, and my wife's love for our kids. These attributes were all part of what made Anna the person she was and what she passes on to generations to follow. As for the robins, the nest is now empty. The mother robin was there for her children every step of the way. The babies grew and went to live their lives, but every morning one of the young robins stops by, lands on our window, gazes in at us and visits the old nest.
