MARCH 2020

Today’s interview is with Cathy Hoskin, manager of the Simcoe and District Humane Society (SDHS) at 24 Grigg Drive in Simcoe. Q How long has the Simcoe and District Humane Society been running? A We have been in service as a charity since 1953. Q How long have you been working here and what is it you do here? A I am the chief, cook, and bottle washer, meaning I do everything here. I started in 1999, in 2004 I became cat coordinator, I became president in 2006 and the board made me the manager of the shelter. Q A

What is it exactly that you guys do? Our main program is taking in animals that are abandoned, sick, injured, etc. We also have lowincome spay-neuter clinics. There is also the Helping Hand, Helping Hearts program which helps animals of owners who are in the hospital or have passed away, etc.

Q How many animals do you typically have in care and how long do they stay with you? A Typically we have a capacity of care. With the building and foster care, we can do 180 animals. This building can do 86 animals when we have litters of kittens come in. It’s more about how many you can fit in and get appropriate care. Our return rate of adoptions is only 2%, so out of 100, only 2 typically come back.

AND THE

Q A

I hear you are in the process of building a new facility in Simcoe. When is that due to open? We have plans of opening the new shelter in the spring and will be approximately 3200 square feet. We are hoping to have vets to come in as we will have a fully equipped exam room, dog runs for dogs in care, and one of the most exciting things will be indoor plumbing. Currently, we have a portable toilet outside which is very cold in the winter.

Thank you for your time, I really enjoyed our talk and would love to get an application to volunteer here myself. Cathy: I really enjoyed talking to you also and would love for you to come back when the new building is done and meet some of the other staff. BY KEVIN ROCKEFELLER

Each person is unique. Therefore their weight management and nutritional needs are unique. At New Leaf Hypnosis Clinic, we customize a program for each individual person and their needs. A cookie-cutter approach will not work for everyone. Hypnosis will complement any diet plan or lifestyle (i.e. Weight Watchers, keto, paleo, Canada's Food Guide) because together we will identify the unwanted behaviour and change the behaviour causing the weight gain. Several techniques are used to achieve the individual client's unique goal(s). At the end of the program, the client will have learned how to perform self-hypnosis to continue the treatment for the rest of their lives. One component each client requires is the sincere desire to make the change in their life. When you are ready to make a change in your life, contact New Life Hypnosis Centre for your FREE consultation. THE

REELDEAL

with

LARRY MELLORS

THE NEED FOR REEL SPEED When an angler decides to purchase a new fishing reel, it can become a daunting task. Not only due to the price, but the abundance of options as well. One of the biggest decisions revolves around the right gear ratio reel. Some of that stress level will decrease by understanding gear ratios in fishing reels. The gear ratio of the fishing reel determines the speed at which a reel picks up line on the retrieve. Fishing reels with a gear ratio of 6.4:1 means the spool rotates 6.4 times for every complete turn of the reel handle. As a result, a reel with a 5.1:1 gear ratio is going to be much slower than one with a gear ratio of 7.1:1. Baitcast reels offer a wider range of gear ratios than spinning reels. Bass fishing anglers are now gearing their tackle so much to their lures that there is a tremendous demand for a wider range of gear ratios for baitcast reels. It may also help to know the “Inches Per Turn” (IPT) of a reel as well. The IPT is a measure of how much line is retrieved onto the reel with one complete turn of the reel handle. It can also mean a gear ratio reel that claims to be the fastest may really only retrieve the same length of line as a slower gear ratio reel. Factors such as spool depth, size and width can impact the IPT. Today’s spinning reels feature a gear ratio of 4.7:1 to 7.0:1. On the other hand, gear ratios for baitcast reels range from 5.3:1 to 10:1. The Abu Garcia Revo Rocket Low Profile baitcasting reel currently has the fastest gear ratio of 10:1 with an incredible 41 inches of Inches Per Turn. Novice anglers should select a lower gear ratio for their baitcast reels for slow-rolling spinnerbaits and any presentation requiring the bait to be retrieved at a slow speed. It takes experience to fish slowly with a high-speed reel. Purchasing a middle-speed reel in the 5.3:1 to 6.2:1 ratio range allows beginners to fish both slow and fast moving lures easier. Experienced anglers will use high speed models, 7.1:1 or greater, for most applications because they know it is easier to slow down a retrieve with a fast reel than it is to crank faster with a slow speed model. If you are using the Berkley Spy bait, you must retrieve it at a VERY slow speed. Unless you can slow down reeling, then choose a ratio at the lower end of the scale. Choosing the right gear ratio is about baits and techniques used. Whether you want something fast, slow, or something in between, depends on what lure you’re fishing and how you are fishing it. A slow gear ratio would be 5.4:1 or slower. This is the ideal ratio for big swimbaits; deep crankbaits; and slow rolling deep spinnerbaits. These reels have the highest amount of torque, allowing you to keep those baits deep into the fish’s strike zone. A medium gear ratio would be from 5.6:1 to 6.1:1. These reels could be described as your workhorse as they will be great for multiple techniques and presentations. The reels can be cranked for slow and fast retrieves. Medium ratio reels suit topwaters; swimming jigs; square bill crankbaits; medium depth crankbaits; shallow spinnerbaits and jerkbaits. Gear ratio reels greater than 6.2:1 would be considered fast, or high speed, reels. If you are fishing any lure which requires you to primarily work with your rod, then a high gear ratio is the only way to go. You need to have the ability to quickly take up the slack when you get a bite. This is my choice for techniques such as worming, frogging, flipping and pitching. Applicable baits would include lipless crankbaits; topwaters, such as frogs; shaky heads; jigs with trailers; big worms; Carolina rigs; and Texas rigs. There is no doubt that choosing the right gear ratio can be a bit challenging. With this basic understanding, I hope the numbers are much easier to understand. IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

WORK ETHIC IS A CHOICE “It all seems so easy when you’re sitting on the sofa.” - Ultrarunner Ron Gehl “The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.” - Juma Ikangaa My goal is to maximize my performance at this May’s six day race in New Jersey. There are many factors limiting what I will be able to accomplish. My innate ability is modest and finite. Age has brought its own accumulation of physical injuries, replacement parts (knees), shortening of ligaments, weakening of tendons, stiffening of joints and reduced VO2 max. I have read most of the information available regarding training, pacing, nutrition, foot maintenance and mental preparation. In my mind, the only facet of multi-day race preparation that I can really expand upon at this stage is my work ethic. The willingness to put more effort into achieving a desired result seems to me to be mostly a function of will power, while paying attention to the body’s reaction to the workload both physically and mentally. I am not saying more is always better, rather I am saying that backing off unnecessarily or not doing anything can be simple weakness or laziness. Sometimes the first step out the door is the hardest. Such thoughts were on my mind when I heard about Kobe Bryant. Kobe and eight others, including his thirteen-year-old daughter, died in a horrific helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Bryant was a Hall of Famer, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He

was a man of tremendous talent and intelligence. Bryant will be remembered by millions for many different reasons. For me, what stood out is that, even though he possessed such athleticism and skill, he was always known as the hardest worker among NBA players. His incredible work ethic was evident right from his early days. “If you really want to be great at something, you have to truly care about it. If you want to be great in a particular area, you have to obsess over it. A lot of people say they want to be great but are not willing to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve greatness.” - Kobe Bryant In high school, Kobe got in the habit of showing up at 5am, two hours before morning practice, in order to work on his game. He also liked to play different teammates in one-on-one games to 100. In 2007, O.J. Mayo was the top recruit at Kobe’s Basketball Academy. Mayo asked Bryant to work out with him and Bryant graciously accepted. Kobe said he would pick him up at three. After he failed to show up, Mayo asked what happened. Kobe replied, “Three in the morning, not three in the afternoon.” An opponent, Jay Williams, came on the court for extra work four hours before a game against the Lakers and was shocked to see Kobe, sweating profusely, practising already. When Williams finished, he could still hear a ball bouncing. After the game, he asked Bryant why he was in the gym so long. Kobe answered, “Because I saw you come in and I wanted you to know that it doesn’t matter how hard you work, I am willing to work harder than you.” Once, as he towelled down and sat for an interview, he was asked if he had a certain shooting routine. “Absolutely,” he said. “I go from spot to spot. Today I quit when I made 400 shots.” The interviewer queried how he knew. ‘What do you mean, how do I know? I know because I counted them.” Bryant followed what was known as the “666” workout plan during the off-season. It consisted of doing six hours a day, six days a week for close to six months. The six hours of training were comprised of two hours running with a lot of track intervals, two hours of basketball making between 700 - 1000 shots from a variety of spots and two hours of weightlifting.

Kobe retired after 20 years in the NBA but he continued to go to the gym at 4am. One of the reasons he continued was to teach his children what it means to work hard. During his playing days, there was an ever-evolving and carefully planned series of treatments designed to minimize injury and maximize performance. In addition to the Lakers’ trainers and therapists, he used outside experts, including a neuromuscular therapist, chiropractors, an active-release therapist, stretch professionals and a personal strength and conditioning coach. The regimen changed daily, dependent on his needs. There were pre-game and post-game sessions. Kobe took the time to learn about all the techniques and their purposes so that he could assist his physio team in determining what was required each day, thus speeding up the process. All in all, such rigorous training is a tedious process. You do it out of respect for yourself and for the love of the sport. We have to be more responsible as we age. The single greatest factor stopping people from exercising as easily as they once did is lack of flexibility. You have to figure out a new way to get to the same spot.

JUST SHAKE IT OFF Guest columnist Monique Gerber I wonder if Taylor Swift spent time with horses when she wrote the song Shake it off. I will be honest here and Let’safter Connect confess I had toOxford look upCounty the lyrics I wrote this line by celebrating - People, Places, Events, Arts & Entertainment, and saw, after many repeated mmm, mmm, mmm’s Story Tellers and so much MORE! shake, shake, shakes, fake, fake, fakes … the song really To learn more about Musing About contact us at had nothing to do with horses and the natural response info@musingabout.ca 519-532-0762 of horses to shake off negative and trauma inducing emotions. It did though, in her hip shaking, foot tapping repetitive phrases sort of way, indicate that she can just shake off bad vibes and the soul sucking actions of others. In other words, releasing the potentially harmful trauma inducing emotions that can be brought on by noxious events. So in effect, exactly what horses do when experiencing a stressful situation. They do, in fact physically shake it off. Sometimes quite dramatically and emphatically! I have watched my horses drop down and role during a session with a client who is moving through some fairly deep, stressful moments, then get up, shake vigorously and proceed to walk away quite calm and relaxed with an expressive swish of their tail as if to say, “ and that’s how it’s done”. Just shake it off.

Horses are the empaths of the animal world. Whatever we are feeling, they feel as well.

Science and research has proven that this action in horses (all mammals to be precise -yes that includes us) does in fact reduce cortisol (those nasty stress inducing hormones) and lowers heart rate, blood pressure, loosens the muscles and returns the body to a state of relaxation, or as horses prefer, back to grazing. Horses are the empaths of the animal world. Nature has instilled this mechanism that allows them to pick up on the emotional state of their herd members as well to help them release this tension and stress through the act of “shaking it off”. I guess they truly live by the adage “do unto others” because that is exactly what they do. When we come together with a horse, we become their herd mate. Whatever we are feeling, they feel as well. To rid themselves of the negative effects of stress and tension, they will drop, role and shake. Brilliant!

AIR QUALIT Y E XPERTS Y O U R I N D O O R A I R Q U A L I T Y E X P E R T S S I N C E 19 8 9 It is that time of year, yup, Spring Cleaning. I know I get cabin fever over the winter and as soon as there is a nice day, I am all about trying to clean out the winter mess that seems to take over. Cleaning the windows, decluttering the office, scrubbing anything and everything to revitalize the home! The one thing many of us forget is cleaning the ductwork. All the dust and airborne contaminants have been stockpiling over the long, winter months while your furnace was busy working away to keep you warm! Plus cleaning the ducts will help when the fresh batch of pollen hits, affecting those with allergies. Don’t forget to change your filter regularly as well. This goes a long way in helping your furnace to run as efficiently as possible! Okay, ducts are clean, and filters are up to date. Let’s make sure everything is running fine with our air conditioner, but first, make sure to remove the cover on the air conditioner and remember to give it a good spray to clean it off as well. These are just a few of the recommendations from Craig this month to help get your spring started in the right direction. Now get out there and enjoy!

EARLY BLOOMS &

SpringFashion!

Sassyfras is back! There was a whirlwind of activity as I walked through the doors at Sassyfras Boutique. Spring colours sprung to life as staff were busy prepping all the fashions for the 2020 season. Kim Dickie, the store manager, was full of energy as always and dressed in her Sassyfras Boutique ensemble as we headed towards the greenhouses to see how the growing season was coming along. Kim was excited to show off her new button-down, blue striped, taupe touched, dress shirt from FRANSA, accented nicely with the white ivory tank from Culture. JAG jeans, one of Kim's all-time favourites, is definitely a must for this spring! Don't forget to check out the extensive line of jewellery that Sassyfras carries, such as this timeless, long pendant with its lava bead centre from Bel, which graces Kim today! This is an exciting time of year at Sassyfras with their annual spring fashion show set for Thursday, April 2. My Top Drawer will be there, along with prizes, givea-ways and a little wine tasting as well! Proceeds will be going to HN Victim Services. Get your tickets now!

ANXIETY

Visit our website to learn more about floaters and other associated eye conditions, or contact us today to book an eye exam.

The following tips can help to lower anxiety and manage symptoms: Connect with others. Loneliness and isolation can trigger or worsen anxiety, while talking about your worries can often make them seem less overwhelming. Manage stress. If your stress levels are through the roof, stress management can help. Look at your responsibilities and see if there are any you can give up, turn down, or delegate to others. Practice relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques such as mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and deep breathing can reduce anxiety symptoms and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional wellbeing. Exercise regularly. Exercise is a natural stress buster and anxiety reliever. Do an exercise you enjoy. Get enough sleep. A lack of sleep can exacerbate anxious thoughts and feelings. Make sure you get a good quality night’s sleep. Limit the use of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. These products can have a stimulant affect which leads to higher, not lower levels of anxiety. Put a stop to chronic worrying. Worrying is a mental habit you can learn how to break. When to seek professional help for anxiety symptoms While self-help coping strategies for anxiety can be very effective, if your worries, fears or anxiety attacks have become so great that they’re causing extreme distress or disrupting your daily routine, it’s important to seek professional help.

WHAT ARE THESE FLOATERS IN MY VISION?

Floaters are small, semi-transparent cobwebs, specks or squiggles that appear in your field of vision. They are actually small particles within the gel inside the eye that become noticeable when they fall within the line of sight. Since they are within the eye, they move as the eye moves and seem to dart away when you try to look at them directly.

WHEN SHOULD I SEEK CARE FOR MY FLOATERS?

Most floaters are normal and rarely cause problems. But new or a sudden increase in floaters can indicate a serious condition such as a retinal hole, tear or detachment. If you are seeing an increase in floaters, new floaters, or floaters accompanied by flashes of light, you should have an eye exam immediately with your optometrist or an ophthalmologist to determine the cause.

FROM THE CHAIR. WINTER HAIR SURVIVAL

COLLOIDAL SILVER is a natural antibiotic and disinfectant. Colloidal refers to the suspension of the minute silver particles in pure water. Colloidal silver has been found to kill more than 650 disease causing organisms. It can be taken internally for gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Topically it can be applied to fungal infections on the skin or in the nails. It can help prevent the infection of burns, wounds, cuts, rashes and sunburns. Always check with your family physician before using.

Here are some tips to help revive your hair this winter! • Switch to a moisturising shampoo to help rejuvenate dry, straw like hair. Avoid shampoos with sulphates, as they can strip the colour and leave your hair looking dull. We love Pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner, which just won Elle Canada's award for "best shampoo and conditioner" for the 3rd year in a row! • Even though it's tempting to turn up the heat in your shower, over heating is the main cause of dehydrated hair. If you can handle it, try blasting your hair with cold water at the end of your shower to seal the cuticle of the hair. Also, never style your hair without using thermal protection, which will protect it from your blow dryer, as well as any hot tools you use. • Come in for a relaxing conditioning treatment and scalp massage, or use an at home treatment at least once a week to help replenish your hair's moisture and keep it from looking dull. Hang in there! Spring is on its way! 355 Main St, Port Dover, ON N0A 1N0 www.bladesalon.ca 519-583-2021

MAKING SENSE OF A WORLD

"GONE VIRAL" BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

your body to function without wasting precious energy to rebalance the damage created by diets full of processed or ultra processed foods. A WORLD OF INFORMATION: Common sense can take a back seat when multiple media sources are sharing “real time” stories about the things going on in our world. Many of us are awaiting updates on the plight of the cruise ship passengers - after all, some of our very own Port Dover friends and residents have been dramatically affected. Sadly, an honest attempt to cordon off an aberrant strain of the Coronavirus has resulted in the largest floating petri dish experiment… Anything we don’t understand fully can become a source of fear and panic. As a Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioner, it has been my goal to educate and empower myself, my family, friends and clients as much as possible over the last 30 years. GETTING BACK TO BASICS: Global travel being what it is, our level of population, strained medical systems, and an aging demographic are just a few of the challenges being faced in a reality going forward. Potential exposure risks are highly unlikely to become less - instead, we can expect to experience a significant increase in prevalence of viral and bacterial agents with the ability to mutate and morph in an ongoing effort to protect their own survival. We are not the only inhabitants/organisms living on this planet which means we are going to require different strategies and an adaptability in our own evolution. Currently we rely heavily on medications - antivirals, antibiotics and the constant race to produce vaccinations to thwart and mitigate the damage of some of these opportunistic threats to our health. I am not alone in recognizing that it is critical that we develop and maintain some common sense, foundational lifestyle strategies to reduce the risk of contagions and to minimize the effects if we should happen to be exposed and develop symptoms of these clever and determined health challengers. At Dover Apothecary, our professional health care team cares about you and your family. We have the experience, education, products and passion to help keep you and your family confident about your health care decisions. The best offence is always a good defence: a nutrient dense, whole food diet gives your body the tools it needs and allows

Good sleep habits, fresh air, stress management and reduction, exercise, good clean water and an array of quality nutritional supplements may be a part of the recommendations for you and your loved ones. Avoid undermining your immune health - engaging in habits or activities that are known to detract from your well-being puts you and your loved ones at risk. If you are unwell – stay home or at the very least, stay away from our more vulnerable individuals: anyone with lowered immune response, the elderly, the very young, pregnant women, those undergoing immune suppressing therapies are a few to be aware of. Probiotics, Vitamin D3, Ashwagandha, Astragalus, Vitamin C, Zinc, Garlic, Ginger, Elderberry, Mushroom complexes and sinus rinses are just a few examples of the tools we can utilize to boost our systems both preventatively or to reduce symptoms should they develop. As always, speak with your health care professional before starting supplements especially if you have a pre-existing health condition or are taking prescription medications. By all means, also learn how to boost your immune system prior to being in high exposure areas – public transit, group events, gatherings, clinics, hospitals, schools etc. Take care of your microbiome. Internal: remember 80% of our immune response is governed by our intestinal climate and good flora. Outer: overuse of hand sanitizers and anti-bacterial products can potentially destroy too many of the friendly organisms on our skin so frequent hand washing with warm, soapy water may be a better idea. Anti bacterial and anti viral products don’t differentiate between friend or foe. If your hands are covered in a product that kills 99.7% of bacteria, your good guys have been destroyed as well so the next nasty thing you touch has free rein to multiply! I’m not saying never use it, just be judicious in your timing for such products and wash your hands when you can, instead. Join the health sustaining revolution, “go viral” with common sense and great lifestyle choices! Barb Anstead NNCP I barb@healthywellandwise.ca 519-410-3544

I stopped by Vittoria Health Centre a few weeks back to catch up with Dwayne Willaert (owner and top dog Chiropractor). As luck would have it, Dwayne had just received a new line of Apex shoes, which are custom ordered to fit the individual. With many different styles, from running to casual, he has something to suit everyone. Of course, me being a shoe guy, I decided to check them out and gather as much information as possible! With Dwayne's background, he understands the importance of proper footwear to support the whole body. Here is an overview from Apex on why it is essential to put your feet first!

BECAUSE ONE STYLE DOESN'T FIT ALL. You deserve a pair of shoes that are not only stylish and comfortable, but also engineered to support the unique biomechanics of your feet. With 26 bones and 33 joints – all of which must work together to support your body weight when you move around – the foot and ankle is a very complex structure. Given this complexity, Apex believes that taking a one-style-fits-all approach to shoe design isn't a healthy approach. That's why we developed X-Last, V-Last and A-Last technologies: three different approaches to shoe design and construction that are engineered to help you move about the world in the most comfortable, efficient way.

WHICH STYLE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Determining which of these technologies is right for you depends on how much your foot pronates when walking. Pronation is the natural outside-in motion of the foot that begins when the outside edge of the heel strikes the ground and ends when you push off with the big toe. Overpronation can lead to conditions like Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, shin splints and even knee or back pain. To prevent these conditions, the shoes and orthotic inserts you choose should be designed for your level of pronation. That's why Apex is the go-to footwear brand for so many health-conscious consumers. Call and set up an appointment with Dwayne for your custom fit shoe… put a little bounce back in your step!
