During store business hours, someone from one of these great organizations or businesses will be doing a physical activity inside the store. Actually once you walk in the store and look to the left you will see a whole fitness gym set up with bikes, treadmills, elliptical equipment, and an assortment of other equipment. There will be TV screens with the Winter Games playing, along with a host of prizes to be won by the public (simply make a donation and get your name entered). The area itself has been enhanced with all types of banners and signs and displays… it looks very cool!

it the Ice

By Dave Scott Ninety-nine per cent of the time when I talk about hitting the ice with you, it involves hockey. A few weeks back, I reconnected with something from my past and of course it did have something to do with frozen water… not skating or pond hockey… but a little ice fishing out at St. Williams.

A buddy had called and asked if my son and I would care to join him and three others for a day out on the ice. I couldn’t say no, and my son had never been ice fishing, so it was an easy decision.

It was fun getting ready to go

out. We packed all our snacks, warm drinks, got out the pole, tackle box, dressed in layers, grabbed the frying pan and before we knew it, we were sitting on the back of a trailer being pulled by a snowmobile, headed about a mile out to our hut for the day. The wind was strong out of the southwest and the snow swept across the ice hitting the cheeks of your face. The waterscape dotted with huts gave the feeling of being in the Arctic… you had to marvel at it, as the sled and trailer cut through the snowdrifts while the spray from the snow covered you. I think the kids enjoyed the ride out the most.

The frozen perma-grins on their faces when we reached the hut were hilarious.

Our guide was awesome, giving us pointers and firing up the wood stove in the hut, before heading out.

The six of us settled in and got to work trying to nab us some perch.

It wasn’t long before one of the boys reeled in a little guy. Photos were taken and the small perch was released. The warmth of the wood stove filled the hut and soon we were relaxed with our coats off, slurping back some hot chocolate and apple cider.

It was one of those very rare, just kick back, kinda days. The perch weren’t really biting much, but watching the faces of the kids when they did get a bite was well worth the time spent… the burst of energy, the big smiles, the anticipation of bringing in a big one was just like

opening a present on Christmas morning… and that was just the adults, you should have seen the kids.

The morning turned to afternoon and our little hut caught three perch and course like any true fisherman story, there was the one that got away… but all in all it was a great day. There was no hustle and bustle; it was the perfect retreat from computers, phones, TVs and video games. It was just friends sitting around talking face-to-face, laughing and enjoying each other’s company… what a crazy idea, eh!

As we hopped on the trailer for the ride back to shore I was happy that the opportunity had arose and that I was able to share the ice fishing experience with my son.

Senior Sense ~ Seniors and Stretching

fter being in the same position for some time, the body of a senior can feel like a board! But, with a little help this same body can soon be moving easily and

comfortably. Stretching will do this. Stretching is moving the limbs as far as they will go and moving the joints to their widest while at the same time feeling comfortable and relaxed; it also helps to breathe with the lips slightly apart. Many seniors are doing stretching and know how this helps with mobility, balance walking with confidence and just feeling good.

Here is some of the stretching they do. If doing these for the first time, start with two or three times and quit anytime if feeling tired, uncomfortable or are having any pain. The number of stretches to work up to is five while feeling relaxed and comfortable.

The horrendous fire at a Quebec Nursing Home this winter and the 25 deaths of elderly residents in that facility is on the top of the mind of everyone who works in eldercare. No matter who is found at fault in this tragedy the fact remains that our elderly citizens living either at home or in long term care facilities are extremely vulnerable due to their advanced age, possible dementia and/or their frail physical health. Prevention of fire is the only sure way to protect our elderly loved ones from such a gruesome fate.

I have re-produced information from the FireChiefs of Ontario on winter fire-prevention for the elderly senior living at home. If you are an elderly senior living at home or the caregiver of such a senior it is essential that you go through this list and make any changes in the home that are necessary to ensure that the home is safe.

There is no guarantee that a fire will not occur, but by complying with this check list you will be doing as much as possible and increasing the odds that your loved ones will survive. It is not the most pleasant of subjects, but action steps are required before a fire, they mean very little

These stretches are really quite easy, but it is surprising how many seniors don’t find them this way when first trying them.

Every senior can always find a ‘neglected’ muscle or joint. All of these suggestions take time and if there is any hesitation or pain do seek medical advice.

Smoke Alarms • Install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area and in each bedroom.

• Test and vacuum your smoke alarms each month to make sure they are working.

• Smoke alarms 10 years old or older need to be replaced with new units.

Home Escape Plans • Know two ways out of every room.

• Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

• Do not attempt to go back into a burning home.

Fireplaces and Woodstoves • Never burn gift wrappings, boxes, cartons, or other types of packing in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate far too much heat.

• Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to protect against flying sparks.

• Never use gasoline or any other flammable liquids to start a fire.

• Use only seasoned and dried wood.

• Never leave the fire unattended or let it smoulder.

• Clean the ashes regularly. Place the ashes in a metal container and store outside away from flammable materials.

Heating • Keep anything that can burn at least threefeet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.

• Never use your oven to heat your home.

• Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

• Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Be sure all furnace controls and emergency shutoffs are in proper working condition.

• Leave furnace repairs to qualified specialists.

Simcoe Little Theatre presents “[title of show]” February 13th to 23rd

Simcoe Little Theatre (SLT) is bringing the truly “original musical” [title of show] by Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen to its storied stage as part of its 67th season. This uproarious, full-tilt, boogie musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical is making its debut at SLT and stars four well-known local actors. [title of show] (the name of the play) chronicles its own creation, following the struggles of Hunter and Jeff - two long time friends and musical theatre aficionados - as they scramble to write their own musical in just three weeks to gain entry into the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Along the way, they enlist the help of their friends Susan, Heidi, and piano accompanist, Mary. While brainstorming ideas for a production, the show begins to write itself based on the hilarity and wackiness of their conversations. In its real life journey, the show

made it into the festival, eventually debuting off-Broadway in 2006 and on Broadway in 2008, starring the original four characters as themselves. “[title of show] is a musical comedy of the best kind; its story is unique and quick-witted and its music is big and brilliant!” says Director Sam McLeod. “SLT has put together an all-star cast of five extremely talented individuals. By MARG WERDEN Wanted: A few predators looking for mice!

Obviously we humans are not the only creatures finding this a very cold winter. Mice have invaded our house! In the past, we’ve always had a couple find their way in during the winter, but this year has been a banner year for them. We’ve already caught about 20 of them and they just keep coming. My husband tells me that the wet and icy conditions are forcing the mice to look for shelter inside. Because I hate listening to the squealing of the mice when they’re caught in the snap traps, I live-trap them and then take them for a long walk and release them in a protected area away from the house. There has been a suggestion that I’m just trapping the same couple of mice over and over! Hopefully, that is all it is, a suggestion.

A few years ago, we had a coyote that made regular hunting forays along one of the trails near our house. I watched it as it walked along in about six to eight inches of snow. About once a minute, it would stop for a second, cock its head to one side, pounce into the snow, and come up with a small rodent. In fact, a few times, it didn’t even stop before pouncing. Coyotes have such well-developed senses of hearing and smell that a sudden odour or noise can make it change its course in mid-step, something I witnessed several times. Although we seem to

have a love-hate relationship with coyotes, one of the most common food sources for them is small rodents including mice, moles and voles. So where is this coyote this year when I need him?

The name for this member of the dog family comes from an Aztec word, cóyotl, meaning “trickster.”

Its scientific name, Canis latrans, however, describes part of its behaviour and means “barking dog” in Latin. The coyote is also known as the American jackal, brush wolf, or the prairie wolf, and is a species of canine found throughout North and Central America, ranging from Panama in the south and north through Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Coyotes are slimmer and smaller than wolves with a maximum weight of about 23 kg. The fur is long and soft and generally a tawny grey, darker on the hind part of the back. While the legs, paws, muzzle and back of the ears are more yellowish in colour, the throat, belly and the insides of the ears tend towards white. The tail is dark on top and light on the underside with a black tip.

Although I haven’t seen a coyote on our property for a few years, there is plenty of evidence that they are around. In addition to their tracks and scat that I see on our trails, we often hear them howling at night.

The coyotes’ best-known trait is the yelping, howling cries and highpitched baying they make any time between sunset and sunrise. We

contributing factors. Coyotes soon learned to scavenge the carcasses of domestic livestock, just as it still scavenges the carrion of large animals killed and left behind by wolves.

Unfortunately, the coyotes don’t always limit their dining to carrion; they have also become predators of small farm animals, making them the farmers’ enemy. Coyotes mainly eat meat such as rabbits and small rodents, but they will also eat blueberries and other wild fruit and insects such as grasshoppers. Even though predation of livestock can become a problem, the coyote has value as a scavenger and a predator of rodents, helping to keep these populations in check.

Considering the mouse problem we’re having here this winter, all I can say is bring on the coyotes!
