KEEPING IT LOCAL

We were there as category sponsors of the Nursery of the Year which I presented the Award and certificate to Woodleys Farm Day Nursery as winners of the category. Well done once again! Simon Cox, Editor

In our latest edition, we look back at events since our last edition and welcome new members to NNBN as we continue to grow and help support our community. Since our last edition in August, we had one of the most amazing night’s of our lives with the first NNBN Awards and we can’t thank everyone enough for entering, supporting and judging the Awards this year. From the early days of our sponsors at the event with the Business Minister in March, to our most recent interview on NLive Radio talking about the success of Northamptonshire’s businesses through the NNBN Awards. It’s been amazing. You’ll be able to read more in this edition about the NNBN Awards and you’ll be pleased to know that plans for the NNBN Awards 2024 are already underway! Talking of Awards, we were delighted to be a category sponsor at the recent Northamptonshire Education Awards organised by our Member All Things Business. Well done to Ben, Frazer and the team for organising them and many congratulations to everyone who participated in them. It’s key that businesses work with our education sector, something we believe in NNBN as we are always looking to support local schools and further education providers where we can and I know a few of our members also support them.

2

We’ve been working on the plan for 2024 and it’s going to be another busy year for NNBN and our members with a number of workshops being planned, events and our new podcast which launches THIS WEEKEND! Yes on my 50th birthday! Our workshops have been very popular over the last few months with key topics such as marketing ideas, ethical selling, boosting performance through better operational efficiency and thank you to both Rupert Turton from Action Coach Oakham and Kettering and Sara Penrose and John Henderson from Sara Penrose Limited for running these. We are always open to ideas and feedback from what our members would like to see as a workshop so please keep the ideas coming. Finally, thank you to everyone who continues to engage with NNBN. Our 121 Mentoring Sessions with members are still on the increase, our NNBN Awards recognised the success of local businesses, charities, organisations and individuals in the County and we continue to grow. Without you all, we wouldn’t be where we are today and long may it continue for us all!

EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION AND DETERMINATION: NORTHAMPTONSHIRE’S AWARD-WINNERS ARE UNVEILED

A can making plant, voice and arts academy, Elizabethan summer house, Indian restaurant and an organisation providing meals for busy parents – just a few of the outstanding winners unveiled at last night’s NNBN Awards. Earlier this year more than 170 submissions were made to the county’s newest awards scheme, with these NNBN Awards dedicated to celebrating inspiring individuals, innovative businesses and committed charities across Northamptonshire. At this year’s NNBN Awards ceremony, held at Kettering Park Hotel, the finalists gathered and the winners were unveiled. Ball Corporation, whose cutting-edge, 56,000m² aluminium can-making plant in Barton Seagrave opened at the start of this year, scooped two awards on the night – Business of the Year and The Green Award. It was also a double celebration for Northamptonshire based organisation No Fuss Meals for Busy Parents. This innovative organisation, which provides family-friendly recipes, food and farming blogs and no-fuss cooking advice, was crowned Start Up Business of the Year, with co-founder Milly Fyfe also winning Business Person of the Year.

NNBN Director Simon Cox said “Thank you to everyone who supported us with our first NNBN Awards evening and a huge congratulations to all our winners and finalists. What incredible talent, resilience, creativity and innovation we have here in Northamptonshire, and what a privilege to be able to share and celebrate this.” NNBN Co-Director Marie Baker said “Thank you again to our judges and our sponsors and to everyone who has supported these awards. The feedback has been exceptional and we already have exciting plans for 2024. Congratulations to all our winners.” These NNBN awards have been supported by event sponsor Wilson Browne Solicitors and by headline sponsors North Northamptonshire Council, Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, Poppy Design Studio and Pilkington Communications.

FOUNDATION WIN ‘CHARITY OF THE YEAR’ AT THE NNBN BUSINESS AWARDS On Friday night, Northampton Saints Foundation received the prestigious title of Charity of the Year at the NNBN Business Awards, held at Kettering Park Hotel & Spa. The award received by the Foundation, recognised their outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to young people and the community over the past academic year. Having achieved a successful four-year run with the Kettering Business Awards, the NNBN awards ceremony was introduced to encompass all of Northamptonshire. “Our team are thrilled to win Charity of the Year” said Catherine Deans, Managing Director at Northampton Saints Foundation “This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters, who continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals in our community. “I couldn’t be prouder of the young people we support to make better life choices, helping them to break free from any obstacle and challenges. We give them a second chance to unlock their potential, guiding them towards success. This award is dedicated to them.” In an era where community support is more crucial than ever, Northampton Saints Foundation stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision of creating better futures. 6

NBN Director Simon Cox said: “We were delighted with how the event went and the positive vibe in the room throughout the evening as businesses, charities and individuals were recognised by our judges for their hard work and contribution to the County. “As the Charity of the Year Award winner in this year’s Awards, both Marie Baker and I were delighted to present a cheque for £1,000 to support the work of the charity and it was a pleasure that we could present this in front of everyone on the evening.” Northampton Saints Foundation remains focussed in its commitment to making a positive impact in the community and the recognition received at the NNBN Awards, serves as a reminder of their significant achievements and inspires them to continue their invaluable work. West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) has launched a competitive commissioning round to identify partners to deliver key elements of its multi-million-pound investment plan which will benefit the local economy and support businesses’ sustainability goals. The Council is inviting suppliers to submit tenders to deliver two leading projects; Decarbonisation and Growth & Innovation. Both projects have been allocated £625k from the Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The Fund, which is managed for the Government by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities supports the Government’s levelling up agenda. Among the plans for the UKSPF funding include providing business support and revenue grants up to the value of £20,000. The fund will encourage businesses to innovate and understand how they can grow their sales, profits, workforce and business as well as supporting employers to understand their energy usage and the measures they can implement to reduce emissions, increase efficiencies, and save on energy costs. The chosen supplier for the Decarbonisation project will distribute grant funding and work with local businesses to develop sustainability plans which specifically outline how they can achieve a Net Zero future and utilise Government funding to address carbon emissions: having a beneficial impact on their business, the local area and the planet as a whole. The chosen supplier for the Growth & Innovation project will distribute grant funding and work directly with businesses to deliver measures to help progress their growth journey and implement actions to increase productivity, including 121s, training, webinars and dedicated expert advice.

WEST NORTHANTS COUNCIL TO INVEST MILLIONS INTO BUSINESS GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY

In addition, over £800,000 of Rural England Prosperity Funding (REPF) will soon be available to support businesses in eligible rural areas. Across the three projects activities will target investment in supporting the drive to net zero, increasing business productivity and growth, and capital investment to support transformative rural initiatives. Cllr Daniel Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration and Growth, said: “We are a local authority that recognises local employers as the lifeblood of our economy and it is for this reason, we are thrilled to be delivering the majority of our UK Shared Prosperity Fund to support local employers, improve and create jobs, boost the local economy and raise the profile of West Northants as an area where everyone can thrive with the support of a Council which is dedicated to strengthening business growth and potential. “As a Council, we’ve worked hard to carefully plan how to use this funding to realise our growth aspirations for our area and ensure this funding has a beneficial impact on the local economy whilst addressing specific challenges and opportunities as identified from the data and consultation which informed our UKSPF Investment Plan. “We have a comprehensive range of projects, initiatives and activities taking place between now and March 2025 which aim to deliver impactful interventions that will benefit the whole community; from public realm improvements to voluntary grants, to business support and upcoming funding dedicated towards supporting local people and enhancing skills. WHAT IS THE GOOD BUSINESS CHARTER?

The Good Business Charter is a simple yet effective accreditation scheme, designed to recognise, encourage and champion responsible business behaviour in the UK. Developed in collaboration with the TUC and FSB, it measures behaviour over ten components that matter to everyone, collectively covering care for employees, suppliers, customers and the environment, whilst committing companies to paying their fair share of tax. Launched in February 2020, and with more than 1300 organisations already accredited, it attracts interest from sole traders, FTSE100 companies, charities and the public sector, including: Richer Sounds; TSB; Aviva; Brompton Bikes and the University of Northampton. Accreditation costs just £25 per year (flat rate) for organisations with 0-50 employees; larger organisations (with 51 or more employees) pay £1 per employee, per year, capped at a maximum of £2500 (£500 cap for public and third sector). The application process is straightforward and can be completed online. As a benchmark for good business, the GBC has the potential to change behaviour across all sectors, resulting in a positive impact for employees, customers and suppliers. Could now be the time that you joined the movement for a fairer, sustainable world where people matter? Don’t delay, accreditation is currently free for the first year – offer expires on 31st December 2023.

“North Yorkshire currently has the highest number of accredited organisations outside of Greater London (136), wouldn’t it be fantastic to see Northants smash that and take top

place!”

DELAPRÉ DIGS FOR WELLBEING: NEW PROJECT LAUNCHED WITH LEADING ARCHAEOLOGICAL UNIT

A dozen local residents are stepping back in time and taking part in a special six-week archaeology project led by the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA). Delapré Digs: Archaeology for Wellbeing, being piloted at Delapré Abbey in Northampton this October and November, is being led by MOLA’s archaeologists and specialists in partnership with Northampton General Practice Alliance (GPA). The project offers an opportunity for those experiencing low to moderate mental health needs, disability, long-term chronic conditions and loneliness to come together and take part in a range of archaeological activities, including excavation, finds processing, research and recording, as well as creative activities such as illustration and pottery making. Katrina Gargett, Community Partnerships Manager at MOLA said: “As archaeologists, we know the positive impacts that taking part in archaeology can have on our mood, whether from the thrill of finding an object that’s been hidden for centuries, sharing a joke with your colleagues in the trenches or simply being outdoors. “We’re thrilled to be bringing these benefits to people in Northampton, empowering individuals to feel more confident, form new social connections, and be inspired by the place they live.” 26

Eleanor Sier, Head of Engagement and Interpretation of Delapré Abbey, commented: “This is such an exciting wellbeing project and is all about creating positive wellbeing impacts for local residents, many of whom may have experienced poor mental health and loneliness.” Claire Finn, MOLA Northampton’s Head of Research and Engagement added: “This is an exciting chance for us to reach more people in new ways. Developing these inclusive and accessible activities for local communities is an important part of our work. For our staff, it also means being able to share their passions with those who usually don’t get a chance to take part in archaeology.” Delapré Digs is a six week programme, with participant coming together one day a week to learn about archaeology, discover the history of Delapré Abbey, get creative and hopefully make new friends – all fuelled by tea and cake of course! If you’re interested in finding out more about the project, you can get in touch with the MOLA team at socialprescribing@mola.org.uk. Delapré Digs: Archaeology for Wellbeing is a social prescribing project and is being delivered in partnership with Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust and Northampton General Practice Alliance (GPA). NORTHAMPTON FLIES THE PURPLE FLAG AS TOWN CENTRE CRIME FALLS New figures have revealed crime connected to Northampton town centre’s weekend night-time economy is falling as the area celebrates Purple Flag Month. Overall, crime committed between 5pm and 5am on Fridays and Saturdays dropped by five per cent in 202223, criminal damage was down by more than 60 per cent and violent incidents causing injury fell by 40 per cent – according to data using incidents reported to Northamptonshire Police. The figures have been shared by Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) during Purple Flag Month which celebrates cities and towns like Northampton that have secured the prestigious Purple Flag status. Similar to the Blue Flag scheme for beaches, the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) awards Purple Flag status to places which offer a safe, welcoming environment combined with a diverse mix of dining and entertainment between the hours of 5pm and 5am. Mark Mullen, operations manager at Northampton Town Centre BID which funded the town’s Purple Flag application, said: “We are incredibly proud that Northampton has held the prestigious Purple Flag status since 2018 because it recognises that the people involved in our night-time economy work are creating a safe and welcoming town centre for our visitors.

“Achieving this accreditation is no easy feat and it’s heartening to see that the multitude of proactive projects that are running in the town centre to keep people safe are having a positive impact on the area’s crime figures. “Northampton’s night life has so much to offer and it’s wonderful to see our town centre has become even safer for everyone over the past year.” Activities which have been taking place in the town centre include Northamptonshire Police’s Nightsafe Operation, Operation Kayak which tackles predatory behaviour and patrols by Street Pastors and Northampton Guardians. Six new emergency help points linked to the town’s CCTV control room were set up last year, this year saw the relaunch of the Cops Adopt a Shop programme and Community Action Days have been held to promote safety items and advice to the public. Northampton Town Centre BID and Northampton Business Crime Partnership also run the Northampton Town Anti-Social Behaviour Reporting Scheme (NTARS) which enables levy paying businesses to share intelligence on anti-social behaviour and ‘low level’ crime with one another and the police. The details of 108 known offenders are currently logged on the NTARS system, allowing business owners to be alert to potential troublemakers in the town centre. Northamptonshire Community Foundation is the largest independent grant-making charity in the county, supporting vulnerable local residents with a place-based approach to fulfilling need. The foundation funds a range of organisations and charities tackling urgent need locally; local Foundation-funded organisations featuring in the Hidden Needs Report include Northampton Town Football in the Community, KidsAid, the Lowdown and Serve Rushden.

understanding of our county.

A follow-up to the original report published in 2018, the 2023 Northamptonshire Hidden Needs Report highlights urgent and priority needs in Northamptonshire, including pressures on residents accessing services in rural areas, high levels of hospital admissions for self-harm, child poverty and childhood obesity, increased dementia diagnoses across the county, fuel poverty and violent crime.

University of Northampton (UON) Vice Chancellor, Professor Anne-Marie Kilday, said: “Northamptonshire Community Foundation is a key charity within Northants that delivers funding to volunteers and community groups in the region to support their dedicated efforts to improve the lives of the county’s most disadvantaged people.

This year, a new section has been added to focus on the access needs of rural communities, furthering the foundation’s work to ensure that rural communities receive their fair share of funding. Other key focus areas are Inequality and Deprivation; Health and Wellbeing; Children – Impact and Challenges; Education, Skills and Training; Older People; Housing and Living Environment and Crime. Rachel McGrath, CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “We know that there is much to celebrate about Northamptonshire and its residents, but we also know that there are persistent and emerging concerns around poverty and disadvantage.

“If anyone is concerned, shocked or inspired to act on the findings, Northamptonshire Community Foundation would welcome a conversation with you about any donations you would like to have invested in tackling urgent local need. We hope the information also helps our place-based community groups and charities to put forward their cases for more funding.”

“This research carried out by UON’s Institute for Social Innovation and Impact will help Northamptonshire Community Foundation to identify social problems in the county that need urgent attention and encourage prospective donors to contribute to these specific areas.” Northamptonshire Community Foundation is committed to supporting the county’s most vulnerable residents. Don’t get me wrong, I think every business needs one, but why are you writing yours? And why now? You see, what you put into a business plan will depend very much on the reason you are writing the plan. Consider the advice in this short article as it will ensure the right things for your business are included in your plan, so here it goes… My ideal version of a Business Plan is structured to provide a clear picture of the business and its potential. I strongly believe Vision, Mission & Culture should take centre stage and is a great place to start. Vision and Purpose You need to state what your company is going to do and show what the future of your business looks like. List the values of your company and include the Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) that your company is striving towards. Mission Explain how you plan to get to your BHAG and add what are you choosing to do in the world to bring it about? Culture Think about the following and include them in your plan: What does the internal business look like? Who are your team and your stakeholders? How will your team and stakeholders communicate, work together, and cooperate? What are the internal rules which govern the business? 40

Don’t be afraid to include your strengths and weaknesses Including a SWOT analysis will show that you are aware of what you’re good at, not so good at but can develop, and that you are mindful of external threats to your business. Consider the internal strengths of your business and the team within it. Most people struggle to list their own strengths, so start with what your team is good at. Think about the internal weaknesses of your business. Be candid and talk about mitigating any perceived problem areas. Now investigate the external opportunities that exist in your marketplace and how you will capitalise on them. What are the external threats to your business? What could de-rail you that you would have little or no control over? Government regulation is a good one to start with, but think outside of the box. Think about what the worst is that could happen, and explain how you would aim to mitigate or avoid the problems that would cause. Think E-cigarettes and their effect on the tobacco industry. Have a Sales & Marketing Plan This section needs to focus on how you will execute your marketing to attract customers as well as create sales to bring in the all important revenue. Some areas commonly missed are test and measure metrics, client lifetime value, sales process, budget along with acquisition investment and strategies.

‘YES TO SPORTS CLUBS, COMMUNITY FACILITIES, GREEN SPACES AND SCHOOLS’ – HANWOOD PARK RESIDENTS HAVE THEIR SAY Community groups, councillors and more than 250 residents had their say at a recent Hanwood Park public exhibition – asking questions, making suggestions and sharing their views about the future of the Kettering housing development. Chris Langdon, Project Director at Hanwood Park reported an “overwhelmingly supportive” response at the exhibition. “There was such support for the project and positive comments about living at Hanwood Park,” explained Chris. “People generally want us to get through the next stage of planning permission so we can deliver shops, amenities and sports facilities, and start opening up more of the area to the public. We share that desire to pick up the pace and turn the proposals we have had from our business partners into reality with investment on the ground.” The exhibition also saw particular interest from local football groups keen to provide a a range of football provision on Hanwood Park and especially to reflect the growth in popularity of women’s football. There were plenty of requests for cycling facilities, pubs, parks and well-lit open spaces. Parking and traffic were highlighted as areas of concern and sustainable travel proved to be a popular topic of discussion with Hanwood Park focusing of the government’s plans for decarbonising transport.

Chris explained: “There is a real appetite for sustainable transport options, including improved bus services, walking and cycling routes to Kettering. People told us that they don’t want to have to drive everywhere and this is why we are working with North Northamptonshire Council to make sure our new community is well connected to the wider area. “As well as launching our travel survey we showcased our new cargo bike, which we will be sharing with local community groups and were supported by Voi scooters – whose network has now been expanded to include the whole of the Hanwood Park estate. We also spoke to visitors about our latest initiative, a partnership with HomeRun – which is all about finding novel and convenient ways to improve school trips.” Kate Williams, chief executive of Groundwork Northamptonshire, said: “We are encouraged by Hanwood Park’s approach and vision around sustainable transport, one which benefits the ecology, area and community. We were delighted and relieved when Hanwood Park removed plans to build a road through our community green space Greenpatch from their masterplan and are now keen to support the development with its sustainable travel solutions.”

NLIVE RADIO WINS GOLD AT THE NATIONAL COMMUNITY RADIO AWARDS Local radio station NLive Radio has been recognised at the 2023 Community Radio Awards The gold award for the Special Category: HM Queen Elizabeth II – Her life, Her reign, and her passing was presented to John Leivers, the culmination of an intensive judging process to recognise those producing great quality content and engaging with their communities. The awards ceremony was held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, alongside the UK Community Radio Network conference. John Leivers, said: “I am so happy to have been awarded gold by the judges. The story of the passing of the Queen was an international event, and our show told the local story of her death. The thing I love about local radio is telling the stories of our local communities. During this time I was able to talk to people about their experiences. From the Lord Lieutenant to the people marking their respects outside All Saints Church. I was speechless to say the least on the night. Totally unexpected. It’s great to have this kind of acknowledgment from my peers in local radio”. The three hour show celebrated and remembered the life of the Queen and her passing. John was supported by Multimedia Journalism and Multimedia Sports Journalism students from the University of Northampton, Zosia Czubak, Katie Rawson, Joseph Ashmenall, Sam Clark, Cole Mason and Eric Sandor.

Maxine Jones, awards director, said: “The recognition for John Leivers and this special show is well deserved, and we hope it recognises their success, and encourages others to engage, represent and support their communities.” “We’ve been running the awards now for eight years, and as ever the standard is immense, and our judges have a really tricky job” Organisations like NLive Radio have proven their value at the heart of their local areas.” You can hear John on his daily show Afternoon delight Monday to Friday –from 2pm on NLive Radio. WEST NORTHANTS’ HERITAGE OPEN DAYS MOST SUCCESSFUL SO FAR!

A visitor feedback survey has revealed that this year’s Heritage Open Days event was the most successful in West Northamptonshire yet following peak engagement, brimming attractions and glowing feedback. The survey captured highlights from residents, visitors and attractions who took part in the 10-day festival, which took place between 8 and 17 September, as they discovered and explored cultural and historical attractions across the area. West Northamptonshire is rich in culture and heritage, with dozens of stately homes including Sulgrave Manor, Lamport Hall and Canons Ashby; buildings of historic interest including 78 Derngate and Weedon Royal Ordnance Depot; and museums and places of worship, which all took part in the annual festival organised by the National Trust. Many attractions not normally accessible to the public were opened up for visitors to explore and special guided tours, walks and open days took place in Daventry, Northampton and South Northants, all free to attend. Many venues were also connected by Northampton Transport Heritage buses, enabling visitors to get between attractions in vintage style for free. Feedback from the survey revealed that 74% of people felt the event made them feel prouder and more part of their local community while 87% said they learned something new about their local area from attending a Heritage Open Days event. 54

Users commented on the friendliness and professionalism of the event staff, the variety of workshops, exhibits and events, and the overall organisation of the event and free Heritage bus service. Cllr Adam Brown, Deputy Leader of WNC and Cabinet Member for Housing, Culture and Leisure, said: “We are dedicated to growing the visitor economy within our area, so I am thrilled that West Northants’ Heritage Open Days event saw such a great turnout once again. For many, the event provided a unique opportunity to access places they may have thought were off-limits or may not have even known existed – all for free! “Through the event, residents and visitors were able to learn about West Northamptonshire’s rich history and culture, gaining new perspectives on the area’s past; from exploring behind the scenes in historical buildings to hearing tales about residents’ fascinating lives and getting stuck in with creative activities, there was something for everyone and I am delighted that so many of our local venues took part.” Liam Montgomery, Heritage Open Days Marketing & Projects Manager, said: “Heritage Open Days is a colossal community effort – thousands of organisations, community groups and individual volunteers come out in force to share their enthusiasm, passion and love for the places and spaces they introduce visitors to every year. “We’re delighted to see that it went so well in West Northants this year, so many brilliant places opened up their doors and so many people were able to access history and culture for free over the 10 day period.”

NORTHANTS IT SUPPORT COMPANY EXPANDS INTO NOTTINGHAM

A Northamptonshire-based company that provides IT support to businesses has announced the establishment of a second branch in Nottingham. 3RS IT Solutions, which has an office in Irchester, has moved into offices at Bridgford Business Centre in Nottingham and is recruiting for new roles to serve in the area. The company is headed up by Stephen Souch, who has worked in the IT industry for 16 years. Stephen founded his first business in the IT sector in 2013, building it up to a £1 million turnover company before establishing 3RS IT Solutions with his wife, marketing manager Leila. 3RS IT Solutions was officially incorporated in February and has already grown to a team of eight with 150 clients on its books. This next phase of expansion will see the company grow its coverage of the East Midlands further, first with Nottingham, followed by Derby in 2024.

As part of the expansion, 3RS IT Solutions has hired sales executive Eliza Nowicka who will cover the Nottingham area. Eliza said: “I am hugely excited to be joining an ambitious family business at a time of huge expansion. Everyone has been so welcoming. It already feels like I’ve been working at 3RS IT Solutions for years. It feels like home.” Home is a reason that Nottingham was identified as a site for expansion with Leila Souch originally coming from the area. She said: “Nottingham is where I am from and I know the area well, as well as the colloquialisms! It was always our ambition to expand 3RS IT Solutions further geographically and it makes me hugely proud to be doing this in Nottingham and bringing jobs to the region too.” 3RS IT Solutions will continue to operate out of its Northamptonshire offices and provide IT support and other services to businesses across the county.

3RS IT Solutions is currently recruiting for an additional sales executive and engineer to serve the Nottingham region. To find out more, call 0115 784 6848, email elizan@3rs-it.co.uk or visit 3rs-it.co.uk

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEMBERSHIP ORGANISATION BACKING THE PROMPT PAYMENT CODE Northamptonshire Membership organisation NNBN is marking their first anniversary of signing the Prompt Payment Code by encouraging businesses leaders to commit to signing the code and helping to reduce the time in payment of invoices.

NNBN Director Simon Cox said “The UK Government and various business organisations have taken steps to address this issue, but additionally business leaders can also take steps by committing to signing the Prompt Payment Code and helping to reduce late payments.”

The Prompt Payment Code (PPC) sets standards for payment practices and best practice and is administered by the Small Business Commissioner on behalf of the Department for Business and Trade. The Code covers prompt payment, as well as wider payment procedures.

“We signed the PPC last November to commit our organisation to our suppliers and are proud that we took this step meaning that payment of invoices to our suppliers are paid on time and often ahead of payment terms.”

The Small Business Commissioner, Liz Barclay, is responsible for regulation and governance of the Prompt Payment Code and signatories of the Code. The Small Business Commissioner has the power to determine which companies become signatories and investigate complaints concerning any signatories. These investigations can result in the Prompt Payment Code Compliance Board suspending or removing signatories from the Code. The criteria for joining the Prompt Payment Code is: • • • • • • •

Pay suppliers on time Give clear guidance to suppliers Encourage good practice Pay 95% of all invoices within 60 days Pay 95% of all invoices within 30 days where the supplier is a small business with fewer than 50 employees Avoid any practices that have an adverse effect on the supply chain Late payments can have a significant impact on the UK and local business economies and can lead to several negative consequences for business leaders including cashflow issues, increased borrowing costs, stifled growth, operational challenges and ultimately business closures.

CONSULTATION LAUNCHED ON CORBY TOWNS FUND PROJECTS Residents are being asked to have their say and provide feedback on revised plans for pedestrian and cycle routes between Corby town centre and train station. The Town Centre to Train Station link road and Smart and Connected Corby are two of the projects within the Corby Towns Fund which North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) was awarded £19.9m from Government to deliver. In September 2022, residents were asked for their views on the proposed, original designs after which the comments were received and collated into common issues/themes. The common issues and comments were evaluated, and alternatives were investigated, following which the scheme was revised and an alternative plan put forward. In May 2023, North Northamptonshire Council completed a ‘You said, we did’ exercise which set out the comments/themes received and how the initial plans have been altered to mitigate these issues. Now, residents and stakeholders are being asked to take a look and comment on the new, amended plans. From Wednesday 1 November to Friday 22 December, information boards will be on display, alongside paper copies of the questionnaire, at the Corby Cube and there will also be staffed events, where residents can speak to staff and ask questions, between 10am and 4pm on: • • • • •

Tuesday 28 November Thursday 30 November Monday 4 December Wednesday 6 December Friday 8 December

For those unable to attend, feedback can be provided through the dedicated Corby Towns Fund website. Cllr David Brackenbury, the council’s Executive Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “Following an initial engagement last year, we have taken comments and concerns on board and amended the plans, which we are now asking for further feedback on. “As previously, we welcome comments from the public and there will be information alongside amended designs on display in the Cube until 22 December. Staff will also be on hand on identified days over the next few weeks to talk through the plans and answer any questions you may have – I would encourage you to visit the Cube and share your thoughts on what is being proposed.” Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council, said: “The funding we have received from central government must be used on particular projects, but we have also listened to residents and made changes where we can. If you are unable to visit the Cube, you can see the plans online and provide feedback via the Corby Towns Fund website.” The information will be gathered in early 2024 to identify any issues and comments which can be addressed as detailed design work continues. It is currently anticipated that work with start on the sensor network in winter/spring 2024.

NEW OUTREACH PROGRAMME HELPS LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN ENJOY A UNIQUE TASTE OF HISTORY The learning team at Chester House Estate has launched a new outreach programme, working with Northamptonshire schools and teachers to take the estate’s unique history into classrooms. Chester House Estate is a nationally significant heritage site and one of the few places in the country that can demonstrate over 10,000 years of human activity.

Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council, added: “Chester House Estate was a real, living Roman town 2,000 years ago, and its history applies to all the local towns and villages, such as Stanwick and Raunds. Outreach is an opportunity for children to discover what life was like up to 10,000 years ago and relate to where they live now. The team are flexible, and support existing history lessons rather than disrupting the school day timetable by adding in lessons.”

Its new outreach programme has been carefully designed to align with the national curriculum and to support schools by providing a host of workshops for all ages – from Early Year through to secondary school age.

Literally every step visitors take at Chester House Estate is packed with history, much of it still buried. More than 4,000 schoolchildren have taken part in the estate’s learning and engagement programme since the opened two years ago.

Cllr Helen Howell, North Northamptonshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Sport, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “”We’re really proud of the new Chester House Estate outreach programme which has been designed to complement and enhance the history already being taught in our schools. We are able to bring real objects from both our Archaeological Resource Centre (ARC) and our handling collection, some of which are not typically accessible to the public, into classrooms and the team will be sharing first-hand knowledge of the Estate’s unique and rich history.

The Chester House Estate outreach programme, taking workshops directly into schools, includes primary school workshops on ‘The Nene Valley Romans’ and ‘Pre-history in the Nene Valley’ and secondary school workshops on ‘The Artefacts of Archaeology’ and ‘How do we know about the past?’.

“Since the pandemic, learning has changed, and we’ve found that schools can be reluctant to travel to us, so this service is in high demand and schools are already reaching out to us to book. It is budget friendly, means there are no travel expenses for schools and the quality and depth of learning is excellent.”

Find out more about the Chester House Estate outreach programme here: https://chesterhouseestate.org/learning/outreach/ Chat to the Learning and Education team by emailing learning@chesterhouseestate.org Chester House Estate is overseen by North Northamptonshire Council and opened to the public in October 2021, following an extensive £17m Nationally Lottery Heritage Funded restoration project.

CONGRATULATIONS WHEELIE KLIPS! Local family business Wheelie Klips Limited has won a National Award at the Clean and Tidy Home Show held at ExCel London in October when nearly 12,000 people visited the show. The company walked away with the Home Organisation Product of the Year accolade. They were also finalist in a second category Home Scent of the Year. The award was presented to Director Mike Deacon by Georgina Burnett ex-BBC Weather Presenter and TV Presenter on This Morning show on ITV. A panel of influential judges decided on the winners against innovation and originality in design and strategy, commercial success, great feedback, and strong marketing and future growth prospects. Public voting was used to identify the finalists then the winner was decided by the panel of experts.

Penny Moyes Founder and Director of Latch Events, an event company, and organiser of the Clean and Tidy Home Show said, “Congratulation Wheelie Klips, we are so delighted that you were part of the Clean & Tidy Awards and we hope you are as pleased with receiving the award for Home Organisation Product of the Year as much as we were please to award it to you. Once again, thank you for being a part of the Clean & Tidy Awards 2023.”

Mike Deacon said, “We are delighted to win such a prestige award and to think that we were finalists in two categories is very pleasing.” “Winning gives us the confidence that our products are liked amongst those who value a clean and tidy environment.” “We had a tremendous amount of interest in our products we displayed on our stand and to realise that we were in competition with well known brands and winning was magnificent.” “We believe our embrace of environmental issues and our solutions give us the reason to believe we were recognised in this category as it is not easy to have such a focus. Our cleaning and tidying solution is new and different to anything else found at the Clean and Tidy Home Show.”

UK. The solutions involve the end user clipping a bin liner in place hence keeping their wheelie bins clean and fresh. An alternative solution to that of using a jet wash which is more expensive and usually leaves a mess on the road. They sell clips, fragrances, bags, and safety awareness stickers. Furthermore, to deter flies from entering wheelie bins there is a spray bottle that sits inside the bin in one of the patented clips and is applied within the bin cavity and stops the owner having that horrible experience of maggots in their bin. The spray has been scientifically proven to deter flies. There is no other solution like this on the market and the liners are probably the strongest available in the UK.

78

Wheelie Klips Limited is a small, friendly family business in Rothwell and has developed a new brand of solutions to help solve the problem of unhealthy waste disposal in the light of reducing local council support and responsibility. They have a range of accessories for the household wheelie bin market, primarily for 240 litre bins along with smaller bins. These products are all manufactured in the

There is no single use plastic in the products. Using the Wheelie Klips solution could save over 52% of plastic going into landfill when disposing of household rubbish. The products are branded around two clip types: Klip n Fresh, Klip n Bag with a replenishment fragrance bottle Klip n Spray and a roll of 12 extra strong and large bags Klip Bags. Both clips have a UK patent (GB2553841) design which comprises of a double step/shelf which enables them to be clipped onto the outer rim on the sides of the wheelie bin over the liner. This is achieved with ease; no need for any tools just a small amount of pressure to push them onto the wheelie bin. In the last two years there has been an increase of followers on Instagram to over 3600 and nearly 400 on Facebook. All reviews on the company website are 5* and 4.6 average on Amazon. Wheelie Klips products can be found in one of the top six football premier league grounds and a previous FA Trophy winners’ ground, a school in Chichester, and a large restaurant in Dorset and the liners are used in a multi-discipline equestrian venue in Devon, although the main customers are householders. The company has several customers in Australia where they are prepared to pay more for post and packing than for the product itself.

Using Wheelie Klips bags and throwing householder rubbish directly into the wheelie bin, as opposed to using those from a kitchen environment, such as under sink rubbish bin liners or pedal bin liners, would involve over 52% less plastic going into landfill in respect to keeping a wheelie bin clean. Thus, not only do our customers save money by not buying kitchen bin liners or paying for jet washing but they will also be supporting the environment. Not having to jet wash using water to clean bins, and that all products are made within a 160 miles radius of the company home the carbon footprint is better. Mike Deacon also said, “Previously our Klip n Fresh product had been nominated for a Best New Product Award at GLEE 2019 and shortlisted for Garden and Outdoor Product at Gift of the Year 2020. The fragrance spray has received confirmation of its fly deterrent properties from The Crop Research Institute in Prague. As a company we were also finalists for a Family Business of the Year at the SME Northamptonshire Awards 2022. So, winning this award at the Clean and Tidy Home Show was extremely welcomed and appreciated.” More details about Wheelie Klips and its products can be found on its website www.wheelieklips.co.uk or by emailing info@wheelieklips.co.uk.
