WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our ninth edition of NNBN Digital. It’s certainly flown by as we’re enjoying bringing you up to speed with what’s happening around Northamptonshire. As we look back from our first edition, we can see the magazine has been going from strength to strength as we continue to share news from around the County and help keep you informed.

In this edition, we look back at 2023 and the year that was. The first year of the NNBN Awards, the visit from the Small Business Minister Kevin Hollinrake and lots more – helping our members to engage, grow and develop their businesses, charities and organisations through connecting them, supporting them and helping to them to move forward.

We, ourselves, grew in 2023 as we officially became a Countywide organisation and thank you to everyone for their continued support.

So to 2024 and what’s new. Well before I tell you, let me take you back to November last year when we released the first NNBN podcast – a channel which is also growing and has had some great guests featured on there. Since November, there have been a number of podcast recordings released with interviews with our members, local people and we’ve even spoken to the Small Business Minister again for an update. The podcast is open to you to engage with us and for us to help share you and your message “out there” so please do get in touch if you would like to be featured.

The NNBN Awards return in October and look out for some exciting announcements coming soon as we reveal our headline and events sponsors and where the NNBN Awards are taking place this year. Watch this space!

Next month, we’re delighted to be working with the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce at the Northamptonshire Business Exhibition taking place at Wicksteed Park on Friday 8th March. The exhibition is free to attend and we’re helping with the networking at 1.30 pm so visit our Events page on our website and book your free space!

There will be more throughout the year, but watch this space for further announcements! We don’t want to share it all in one go!

2023 WHAT A YEAR!

It’s been an incredible year for NNBN and our members and we would like to thank you all for your support during the last year.

We are delighted you opted to join NNBN and thank you for your continued support.

Thank you also to those who have supported NNBN this year as well, we will continue to build on the success of 2023 to add even more value to Northamptonshire as a County in 2024 and we can’t wait for the New Year to begin!

The NNBN Awards are an amazing addition to the Northamptonshire community and thank you to everyone who supported the Awards. We go again in 2024! Well done to all the Awards Winners, Runners Up and Highly Commended achievers – entries open on 1st April 2024 BTW!!! Thank you to our Event Sponsors Wilson Browne Solicitors, Headline Sponsors Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce,

Design Studio and North Northamptonshire Council once again as well as all our other sponsors – without you all, we couldn’t have made the event happen so we appreciate your support. Our other main highlight of 2023 was the day the Northamptonshire business community joined together for the visit of the Business Minister Kevin Hollinrake on the worst weather day this year in the County! 106 people battled through the snow to be in the room that day and to engage with the Minister over business concerns, challenges and raising questions to him on behalf of member organisations, small businesses and local entrepreneurs. Thank you again to Kevin Rogers, Sean Rose and Jessica Pilkington for their support on the day.

We supported other business awards by sponsoring categories in the Northants Life and Northamptonshire Education Awards, we supported the Northamptonshire Business Awards and the Northamptonshire Community Foundation Awards and NNBN were media partners for this year’s Weetabix Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards as well as a judge. We look forward to continuing our supporting in 2024 and celebrating success on a wider scale across the County.

NEW STRATEGY SETS OUT VISION TO BOOST VISITOR ECONOMY, SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES AND ENHANCE TOURISM IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

A new tourism strategy for Northamptonshire has been given the go ahead by West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) at their Cabinet and Executive meetings earlier this year.

The Northamptonshire Tourism Strategy sets out a vision and approach to nurturing and enhancing the county’s visitor economy and aims to improve pride in place, generate inward investment and create new employment opportunities as well as reduce carbon emissions in line with both councils’ sustainability goals.

The strategy, which has been developed over an 18-month period and co-produced by WNC and NNC alongside partners and stakeholders from across the public, private and voluntary and community sectors, will be implemented between now and 2030 focussing on 4 key themes: Visits and Value, Great People, Better Business and Inspirational Places.

Plans also include the exploration of a new private sectorled Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) which will work with national tourism agency Visit England to oversee and drive the delivery of the strategy while playing a crucial role in promoting and marketing specific destinations to attract tourists. The LVEP will also be responsible for identifying and bidding for Government funding streams.

Similarly to Visit England, which focuses on showcasing the diverse attractions, cultural heritage, and experiences offered by different regions across England, a LVEP would work on developing and implementing strategic marketing initiatives to boost tourism, support local businesses, and enhance the overall appeal of Northamptonshire to visitors both domestically and internationally.

The development setting out what the LVEP could look like in Northamptonshire is a priority following the adoption of the Northamptonshire Tourism Strategy and will be explored in partnership with the private sector.

Cllr Daniel Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration and Growth, at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “The visitor economy in Northamptonshire is diverse, robust and has extreme potential for largescale growth. By developing a Local Visitor Economy Partnership between the private and public sector, we can source support from Visit England to expand Northamptonshire’s tourism offer even further and realise growth for the entire county.

MUCH-LOVED HOSPICE CHOSEN AS CHARITY PARTNER FOR NEWLY REFURBISHED HOTEL

The Northampton Town Centre Hotel, which is undergoing a major refurbishment, has chosen Cynthia Spencer Hospice as one of two charity partners for 2024 and 2025. At the beginning of the year the hotel invited local charities to pitch to a Dragon’s Den style panel of judges, outlining how they envisioned they could work together.

Cynthia Spencer Hospice’s Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser Lead Nina Gandy bid for the opportunity, putting together a well-thought-out video of how the two very different worlds might come together.

She said: “I looked closely at what the hotel offers to its clients and how that mirrored what we offer to our patients and their loved ones. For example, the mini cereal boxes that hotel staff serve to residents at breakfast are the same ones that we offer to families who stay at the hospice overnight with our patients.

“Similarly, the bottle of gin served behind the bar at the Northampton Town Centre Hotel could also be found on our happy hour trolley, in which we offer patients an evening tipple as part of our live every moment mantra. “While we offer very different services, there is some great synergy between us and lots of ways that we can work together to make special memories for our patients and raise more much-needed funds.”

Cynthia Spencer Hospice, in Kettering Road, Northampton, must raise a mammoth £2,208,823 every year, which breaks down to £6,052 per day, in order to continue providing essential services across West Northamptonshire. The hotel, which is currently undergoing a multi-millionpound transformation to be launched later this year under the four star Mercure Northampton, chose the hospice and Northamptonshire Mind for the 18-month charity partnership.

General manager Simon Smith said: “Giving back to our local community is a huge part of who we are. The history and heritage of Northampton will be reflected in the look and feel of the hotel once our extensive renovation is complete and we want to be part of the fabric of the town, making a difference to the people who live here and having a real impact on society.

“Supporting charities and good causes will form a big part of that and we are delighted to be supporting Northamptonshire Mind and Cynthia Spencer Hospice as our official charity partners for 2024/25. Both charities are highly regarded locally and support thousands of local families every year. We look forward to working closely with them in the months ahead to help them deliver on their goals to support all those who need their services.” The charities were also asked what they would do with the old furniture from the hotel, which is surplus to requirements following the recent makeover.

Cynthia Spencer Hospice put forward some useful suggestions, including rehoming fixtures and fittings from the lobby for families to use in communal lounges and private rooms at the hospice.

The hospice team also hope to work with the hotel to provide special memories for their palliative patients, such as afternoon tea experiences, as well as accommodation for families who are visiting the hospice.

Nina added: “When you think of Northampton, the Town Centre Hotel is the first place you think of to stay. We are thrilled to be a part of their incredible journey of change this year and look forward to working together to raise awareness of both our charity and their new offering.”

TEN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE BUSINESSES SELECTED FOR INAUGURAL INCUBATION PROGRAMME FOR ENTREPRENEURS

A new incubation programme for entrepreneurs in Northamptonshire has unveiled its first cohort of participants.

Vulcan Creatives, a free, six-month programme run by the team at the Vulcan Works flexible workspace in Northampton, aims to support ambitious individuals with their business idea by creating a business plan and teaching the skills needed to make it a success.

The programme opened for applications in November and these were whittled down to ten businesses with a preference given to those working in the creative or digital sector – emerging industries in the county that Vulcan Works was created to support. The chosen entrepreneurs were revealed during an official launch event at Vulcan Works on Tuesday 16th January. They include:

• Nabil Abbas, who has developed a decentralised instant messaging app.

• Emma Colton, a photographer who plans to empower female business owners through her photography.

• Chelsea Henry, an interior designer who makes her services more flexible and affordable by guiding her clients to do the installation work themselves.

• Tamara Holland, a marketeer who wants to help children’s activity providers to better market their products and services to parents.

• Mathew Lewis, a musician who wants to develop his band, Party Beats, into a collective, ‘Pick and Mix’ option that enables clients to create their own band from a group of musicians for their events.

• Roddy-Lloyd Jones, a retired teacher who has created a portable photography studio in a decommissioned ambulance.

• Tom Mayes, who has set up his own digital marketing agency specialising in Facebook advertising for aesthetic clinics. Gary Morgan, who plans to set up his own AI (artificial intelligence) assistant tool to help small to medium-sized businesses with their customer service, lead management and appointment setting.

• Gavin Prior, who is working with businesses as a consultant to help them to prototype their virtual reality and augmented reality ideas and turn them into apps.

• Hairdresser Aprille Russell and make-up artist Aveline Rust, a duo who have created a hair and beauty academy after being ‘burned’ by other courses in their industry. Aprille and Aveline have devised a four-month programme that offers hair and beauty qualifications as well as training in business skills such as sales and accounting.

Vulcan Creatives has been funded by West Northamptonshire Council and has received £40,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund’ (UKSPF). It will be led by Vulcan Works’ on-site business growth manager, Darren Smith, an entrepreneur who has started and sold businesses and worked in mentoring roles over the last 20 years. Those who take part in Vulcan Creatives will also receive free access to the Vulcan Works facilities during the course of the programme and up to 50% off workspace in the building after graduating.

STEVE AND ETHAN FIND THE RECIPE FOR FUNDRAISING SUCCESS AT SHOWSTOPPING BAKING EVENT

STAFF from Irthlingborough-based 3RS IT Solutions put their baking skills to the test when they took part in a bake-off event to raise money for Teamwork Trust.

Director Steve Souch and Services Operations Manager, Ethan Malvern were tasked with baking their own Naked Victoria Sponge as part of the challenge, which was organised by Tina Henerson Head of Kitchen at Nene Business Centre and assistant, Helen Farr

After an hour and a half of baking, Nene Business Centre Manager, Dalize Van Zyl and Tina declared Steve’s delicious sponge as the winner.

Steve said: “I’m no baker, but we had a lot of fun taking part in this challenge and, of course, I was thrilled to be named as the winner!

“The Teamwork Trust, which does so much to support people in Northamptonshire with learning disabilities, autism and mental health issues, is a cause very close to our hearts, as my son, Reuben is living with autism.

“To be able to take part in this challenge, have some fun and raise money at the same time was fantastic and we are incredibly grateful to Tina, Helen and Dalize for helping us to make it happen.”

Throughout the year, Steve, Ethan and the team at 3RS IT Solutions are taking part in a number of charity events to raise money for Teamwork Trust. Each month, followers of the company’s social media channels are being invited to vote for which challenge the team should attempt next.

On January 27, Steve and Ethan will face each other once again when they take part in a 5k run around Stanwick Lakes.

PARADISE COMPUTING LTDULTRA CHALLENGE 2024

Northampton-based IT company, Paradise Computing, will be participating in the Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge on the 18th and 19th of May this year. The five members of ‘Team Paradise’ who have chosen to take part will have just 24 hours to hike 100km along the beautiful Jurassic Coast to raise funds for the NSPCC.

The NSPCC is a charity dedicated to ending child abuse in the UK. Alex Hamp, Sales Director at Paradise who is taking part in the Ultra Challenge for the second time, says, “The NSPCC is a fantastic charity that protects and advocates for vulnerable children across the country.”

Team Paradise, which consists of Alex, Robert, Rachmann, Gareth and Ashley, have already begun their training for this monumental challenge and are looking forward to completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in March as a warmup! This 40km hike will give them a taste of what is to come on their 100km challenge. Accompanying the gang on their practice walks is Paradise’s resident office dog Luna, who encourages the team with her boundless energy and makes sure they keep up the pace!

Robert Machin, one of Paradise’s Sage Support Specialists, decided to take part in this challenge after completing the Three Peaks Challenge last year. Robert climbed Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis to raise money for charity, and is excited to take on another challenge, “Deciding to walk one hundred kilometres is definitely a bit crazy, but I really enjoy the challenge of seeing how far I can push myself, and knowing you’re doing it for a good cause definitely motivates you to keep going.”

The NSPCC’s mission is to protect children from cruelty and neglect and advocate for their welfare and mental health; they believe that ‘every childhood is worth fighting for’. The NSPCC rely on donations to fund their vital services which provide support to children and families across the country. Alex says, “We want to say a massive thank you to everybody who’s already donated. Any contributions, big or small, will go a long towards helping us reach our fundraising target and supporting the great work of the NSPCC.”

The role of our Economic Growth and Inward Investment Service combines numerous areas, skills and experiences to deliver economic development that benefits everyone within West Northamptonshire.

WORKING WITH ANCHOR BUTTER

Northamptonshire Community Foundation is one of three members of the UK Community Foundations network, working with Anchor Butter in 2024 to distribute funding through the Anchor Community Connection Fund.

Anchor Butter is owned by Arla Food Limited, the UK’s biggest dairy company. UK Community Foundations is working with Anchor to award grants from £100,000 of funding that has been shared evenly amongst Northamptonshire, Devon, and Lancashire and Merseyside Community Foundations.

This funding will be awarded to charities, community groups and volunteer-led organisations running projects set up to bring people together to share food and strengthen community connections.

In Northamptonshire, applications for grant awards of up to £3,000 from the Anchor Community Connection Fund are now open. Applicants can complete an application form at any time until the fund closes on Friday 29th March.

Rachel McGrath, CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “We know from our Northamptonshire Hidden Needs Report that social isolation and loneliness are issues that need to be tackled and how the opportunity to meet and make friends over food can create the social glue that builds new connections. We’re proud to be working with Arla Food Limited to tackle these issues head-on and help spread some good in the neighbourhood!’

“No matter who you are, coming together with others to enjoy a meal is a wonderful way to build connections. The team are looking forward to seeing the projects and events that take place across Northamptonshire with the funding that the donors have so generously provided.”

Northamptonshire Community Foundation is the county’s leading independent grant-making charity in the county. Check their website for more information.

WHAT IS THE GOOD BUSINESS CHARTER?

The Good Business Charter is a simple yet effective accreditation scheme, designed to recognise, encourage and champion responsible business behaviour in the UK. Developed in collaboration with the TUC and FSB, it measures behaviour over ten components that matter to everyone, collectively covering care for employees, suppliers, customers and the environment, whilst committing companies to paying their fair share of tax.

Launched in February 2020, and with more than 1300 organisations already accredited, it attracts interest from sole traders, FTSE100 companies, charities and the public sector, including: Richer Sounds; TSB; Aviva; Brompton Bikes and the University of Northampton. Accreditation costs just £25 per year (flat rate) for organisations with 0-50 employees; larger organisations (with 51 or more employees) pay £1 per employee, per year, capped at a maximum of £2500 (£500 cap for public and third sector). The application process is straightforward and can be completed online.

As a benchmark for good business, the GBC has the potential to change behaviour across all sectors, resulting in a positive impact for employees, customers and suppliers. Could now be the time that you joined the movement for a fairer, sustainable world where people matter? Don’t delay, accreditation is currently free for the first year – offer expires on 31st December 2023.

“North Yorkshire currently has the highest number of accredited organisations outside of Greater London (136), wouldn’t it be fantastic to see Northants smash that and take top place!”
- Jenny Herrera, CEO

Over 50 businesses in West Northamptonshire have come together to increase opportunities for young people with special educational needs and/ or disabilities (SEND) in the workplace.

Held by West Northamptonshire SEND Partnership, the ‘Business Brunch’ brings together local employers to start the conversation around employment opportunities for young people with SEND and how together, improvement can be made on current employment figures in West Northants:

• 86% of people with Special Needs would like to work

• 22% National percentage for adults with Autism in employment

• 4.7% National percentage for adults with learning disabilities in employment

• 1.4% West Northamptonshire figures for adults with learning disabilities in employment

The first ‘Business Brunch’ saw real enthusiasm in the room from employers as conversations looked at how employers can better support young people with SEND and increase opportunities to support them in employment, preparing them for their adulthood journey.

For further opportunities or to find out more please contact: WNCSEND@westnorthants.gov.uk

At the heart of the Business Brunch, included hearing from young people with SEND who are currently in work or have experienced the employment process, as well as hearing from employers such as Kempston Controls GXO who currently have employees with SEND who explained the positive impact these colleagues have on the workplace.

Cllr Fiona Baker, Cabinet Member for Children, Families, Education and Skills at WNC said: “Every child and young person deserves the same opportunities in employment and those with SEND have so much to offer – they bring new ideas, experiences and skills to the workplace, all in which are really valuable.

“I am incredibly passionate about this piece of work and how together with the business sector we can improve work opportunities for our young people. The figures quoted above are stark and show just how important this project is. It was really encouraging to see so many businesses come along to the brunch, all keen to find out more, share their ideas and be involved. This project is at the beginning with lots more understanding and scoping to get us to where we want to be, however I am confident from conversations in the room that together, we can take this work forward in a way that will make a difference.”

ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?

A local community theatre company have signed up to the Franklins 50 Challenge this year to raise as much money as possible for Northamptonshire Community Foundation. Franklins Solicitors LLP, have branches in both Milton Keynes and Northampton. In 2018 they started the Franklins 50 Challenge, where they give £50 to any local organisation that signs up. You have a choice of eight worthy local charities to support, four from Milton Keynes and four from Northampton. You then have three months, from 20th February – 21st May 2024, to invest the £50 and try to increase it to raise as much money as possible for your chosen charity. At the end of the challenge your company will be invited to an awards ceremony to find out which company has raised the most. Game on!

Laugh Out Loud Theatre Company is a non-profit community theatre organisation with an aim to bring theatre back into the heart of our local communities and make it accessible and affordable for everyone. Whilst they do offer ticketed events, the majority of their work is funded by grants from local authorities, grant awarding bodies and local businesses. LOL Theatre have been lucky enough to be the recipients of not one, but two grants from Northamptonshire Community Foundation towards community-based arts projects. Her Majesty’s Shoes’, specially written for the Jubilee celebrations, proudly showcased Northamptonshire’s shoe industry as well as the many Royal visits our county has received over the years.

A family-friendly production of ‘The Canterbury Tales’, adapted by Martin Riley, was performed in style by a group of budding young thespians aged between 10-16 years old, alongside four professional actors, at Winwick Hall last summer after completing a week-long drama camp. Both projects could not have gone ahead without the support of Northamptonshire Community Foundation and the grants they award for the arts and culture.

Emma Kendrick, Company Director of LOL Theatre, said, ‘We feel so incredibly grateful to have been recognised as a worthy cause by Northamptonshire Community Foundation and to have been awarded two grants from them. Not only does this allow us to hire local theatre practitioners, but we can also support our local communities and provide them with accessible and affordable theatre experiences, bringing our communities together and allowing them to tell their stories through the joy of the arts.’

BUSINESS SUCCESSION PLANNING

Simon Bonanno from Nene Legal shares his expert advice.

Business succession planning is a crucial aspect of managing a company, especially when it comes to ensuring the continuity and success of the business. Business succession planning involves a set of legal and financial strategies that help business owners transition the ownership and management of their enterprises to the next generation or new leadership. This article explores the importance of business succession planning, its key elements, and how it can benefit both family-owned and non-family businesses.

Succession planning is not only a matter of practicality but also a legal necessity. Business owners in England are often faced with the challenge of ensuring that their company thrives even after they step down or are no longer able to manage the business. Failing to plan for the future of the business can lead to potential legal, financial, and operational complications. Therefore, it is crucial for businesses, both small and large, to incorporate effective succession planning into their overall strategy.

Key Elements of Business Succession Planning

Legal Documentation:

The foundation of business succession planning lies in the creation of clear and precise legal documents. This includes wills, trusts, and shareholder agreements that clearly outline how the business assets and ownership will be transferred to successors. These documents should be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect any changes in the business or personal circumstances of the owner.

Choosing a Successor:

Business owners must carefully select and prepare successors, whether they are family members, key employees, or external individuals. This involves providing them with the necessary training, skills, and experience to ensure a seamless transition. While having a Will and other important documentation in place is key, making sure a clear successor is in place early on will go further to ensure a smooth transition with less upset to the day to day operations of the business.

Tax Planning:

Business owners must carefully select and prepare successors, whether they are family members, key employees, or external individuals. This involves providing them with the necessary training, skills, and experience to ensure a seamless transition. While having a Will and other important documentation in place is key, making sure a clear successor is in place early on will go further to ensure a smooth transition with less upset to the day to day operations of the business.

Contingency Planning:

Business succession planning should also include contingency plans for unexpected events, such as the death or incapacity of the owner. These plans ensure that the business can continue to operate smoothly, protecting employees, clients, and the business itself. A key part of contingency planning is ensuring you have a Business Lasting Power of Attorney in place. This document will allow you to appoint attorneys who you trust to make decisions on your behalf should you lose mental capacity, ensuring as little disruption to the business as possible.

Business Valuation:

Determining the value of the business is a critical aspect of succession planning. Valuation helps in setting a fair price for the business and plays a vital role in the distribution of assets among successors.

Benefits of Business Succession Planning

Continuity of the Business:

The primary benefit of succession planning is the continuation of the business. A well-thought-out plan ensures that the enterprise remains operational, retaining its market position and preserving the jobs of its employees. With a strong plan in place your business can continue to thrive even after your death.

Peace of Mind:

For business owners, succession planning provides peace of mind knowing that their hard work and legacy will be carried on by capable hands. This peace of mind can also extend to family members and loved ones.

Tax Efficiency:

Efficient succession planning can significantly reduce the tax burden on the transfer of business assets, allowing more of the company’s value to be preserved for the successors.

Minimised Disputes:

Clearly defined succession plans can minimise conflicts and disputes among family members or business partners.

Enhanced Business Value:

Planning for the future enhances the overall value of the business, making it more attractive to potential investors or buyers. This can be especially important for businesses with non-family successors.

Business succession planning is an integral part of your estate plan and will ensure the continued success of a business by effectively transitioning ownership and management. Whether you own a small family business or a larger non-family enterprise having a comprehensive succession plan in place is vital for the long-term health and stability of the company. It’s also important not to think of business succession planning as purely deathbased planning; planning for a future loss of capacity is important as well. Ask one of our team what we can do for you in terms of will-based planning and Business Lasting Power of Attorney to give you peace of mind that whatever happens your wishes for your business can be carried out.

RECORD NUMBER OF LAMBS DUE TO ‘SPRING’ INTO NORTHAMPTONSHIRE HERITAGE SITE THIS MARCH

Visitors can prepare to feed a record number of cade lambs this Spring at The Chester House Estate, as the team go bigger and better for their popular Spring event for 2024.

The Chester House Estate, a heritage site based in Irchester, have cared for lambs since their first Spring event in 2022 – where 40 cade lambs were housed in their Lamb Barn for the Easter period. Visitors were able to speak to experts, bottle-feed the lambs and were provided guidance on keeping themselves and the lambs safe.

This year, the estate is welcoming more cade lambs than ever, in addition to ewes and goats that will be housed in a brand new marquee named ‘The Lamb Shed’, and visitors can take on the giant Spring hunt and for the first time meet the Easter bunny.

Cllr Helen Howell, North Northamptonshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Sport, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“As with previous years, we will have a dedicated expert livestock team who will be looking after the lambs. The team are dedicated to educating young people with the ‘Farm to Fork’ story and providing hands on learning experiences on the estate.

“Our Spring at the Estate event is always a family favourite, and our biggest event of the year, so by increasing the lambs we care for, it has two main benefits – we are able to provide for more families to experience the feeding, whilst also care for and protect the welfare of these lambs.”

Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council, said:

“This is the Chester House Estate team’s favourite event of the year and takes a lot of organisation, but the result is definitely worth the hard work.

“Events like this on the site continue to go from strength to strength and the team are always striving to be bigger and better. If you haven’t visited the Chester House Estate before, or for a while, please do come down and visit – I am sure you will be surprised.”

This year, The Chester House Estate is looking after a local farmer’s cade lambs. These are lambs that cannot be fed by their mums and need help to survive and flourish. As well as bottle feeding the cade lambs, the Chester House Estate Lamb Shed will also be home to a number of ewes and their lambs, as well as several goats and their kids.

Visitors to The Chester House Estate will be able to visit and feed the lambs and chat to the estate’s expert livestock team from Friday 29th March to Sunday 14th April 2024. The brand new experience sees visitors exploring the 85-acre estate for the Spring hunt, meeting the Easter bunny for the first time, and having a go at some Spring origami – all included in the price of the Spring passport.

For more information and to buy your Spring passport, visit the Chester House Estate website.

Chester House Estate is overseen by North Northamptonshire Council and opened to the public in October 2021, following an extensive £17m Nationally Lottery Heritage Funded restoration project.

DELAPRÉ ABBEY TAKES FLIGHT – HALF TERM

ACTIVITIES UNVEILED AS HOUSE REOPENS FOR 2024

A new flight-themed line-up has been confirmed at Delapré Abbey for this half term – with children and their families invited along to enjoy quiz trails, storytelling and a balloon room. With the House reopening to the public on Sunday 18th February, a Half Term programme celebrating the stories of flight from the Abbey have been organised.

Visitors are invited to bring their kites along to fly on the battlefield, take part in a balloon hunt round the house, enjoy a paper aeroplane challenge and even wade through a room of balloons. There will be a balloon arch round the visitor welcome door to help visitors navigate their way into the house and magical storytelling sessions from Preacher the Storyteller’ on Wednesday, 21st February.

Richard Clinton, Chief Executive of Delapré Abbey, said: “This year we have reduced our ticket prices for adults to enter the House from £8 to £5, and children are still free – which means a family of four can now enjoy all we have to offer for just £10. Being accessible and affordable to our local community is essential and something we are proud of. Our Half Term activities will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our grounds and house and a fun way to experience history and heritage right here on your doorstep.”

Adult visitors are encouraged to join Delapré Abbey’s popular 60-minute history tours which resume from Sunday – thereafter taking place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 11.30am and 2pm.

Spaces are limited so advanced booking is recommended, alternatively learn about the Abbey’s past at your own leisure.

If you’re not sure the Abbey’s history is of interest, join one of the free 10-minute taster talks outside the front door at 11.15am and 1.45pm on their open days to try before you buy.

The Northampton-based Abbey, originally a nunnery established in 1145, is steeped in history. For this Half Term stories of flight from the Abbey’s past will be celebrated –from a gold hot air balloon in 1784 that took off from the grounds through to pilots flying loop the loop over the top of Abbey in 1913 and 1914.

Delapré Abbey’s main house reopens to the public on Sunday, 18th February – and will be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. You can enter and wander freely or have a 60-minute guided tour. What Your Business Plan Should Include

Let's start with a question! Why are you writing a Business Plan? Don’t get me wrong, I think every business needs one, but why are you writing yours? And why now? You see, what you put into a business plan will depend very much on the reason you are writing the plan.

Consider the advice in this short article as it will ensure the right things for your business are included in your plan, so here it goes

My ideal version of a Business Plan is structured to provide a clear picture of the business and its potential I strongly believe Vision, Mission & Culture should take centre stage and is a great place to start

Vision and Purpose

You need to state what your company is going to do and show what the future of your business looks like

List the values of your company and include the Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) that your company is striving towards

Mission

Explain how you plan to get to your BHAG and add what are you choosing to do in the world to bring it about?

Culture

Think about the following and include them in your plan:

What does the internal business look like?

Who are your team and your stakeholders?

How will your team and stakeholders communicate, work together, and cooperate?

What are the internal rules which govern the business?

Don’t be afraid to include your strengths and weaknesses

Including a SWOT analysis will show that you are aware of what you ’ re good at, not so good at but can develop, and that you are mindful of external threats to your business

Consider the internal strengths of your business and the team within it Most people struggle to list their own strengths, so start with what your team is good at

Think about the internal weaknesses of your business Be candid and talk about mitigating any perceived problem areas

Now investigate the external opportunities that exist in your marketplace and how you will capitalise on them

What are the external threats to your business? What could de-rail you that you would have little or no control over? Government regulation is a good one to start with, but think outside of the box Think about what the worst is that could happen, and explain how you would aim to mitigate or avoid the problems that would cause Think E-cigarettes and their effect on the tobacco industry

Have a Sales & Marketing Plan

This section needs to focus on how you will execute your marketing to attract customers as well as create sales to bring in the all important revenue

Some areas commonly missed are test and measure metrics, client lifetime value, sales process, budget along with acquisition investment and strategies

HOTEL IN NORTHAMPTON TO HOST IMMERSIVE ‘FAULTY TOWERS’ DINING EXPERIENCE

One of the UK’s best-loved television sitcoms is being brought to life through a critically acclaimed immersive dining experience being held at a hotel in Northampton.

The Northampton Town Centre Hotel, in Silver Street, will welcome the cast of ‘Faulty Towers’ – a tribute to John Cleese’s classic comedy series Fawlty Towers.

The show, which is coming to Northampton from April 4-7 2024, is billed as a “highly interactive experience”, where audiences enjoy a three-course meal and fivestar comedy, complete with the customary antics from the show’s best-loved characters.

Chris Langsford, sales manager at Northampton Town Centre Hotel, said: “When the audience become diners in the ‘Faulty Towers’ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen – because 70 per cent of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a two-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a 1970s-style three-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem.”

‘Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience’ is now the longest-running Fawlty Towers production in the West End and the longest-running show based on a TV series in the West End. It is also the longest-running Fawlty Towers production of any kind running worldwide.

A loving tribute to the BBC’s classic TV series, the show has been seen by over one million people worldwide since the very first show at the Ridges Hotel in Brisbane in April 1997.

Devised by Alison Pollard-Mansergh, Andrew Foreman and others, the show has been touring the UK and internationally since 2008, having appeared in 43 countries to date, and employing 56 actors per season. The show has toured to more than 1,000 venues, with approximately 400 shows per year on average across the UK, and has just celebrated its tenth year in London, cementing its status as London’s longestrunning immersive experience.

The Northampton Town Centre Hotel is currently being upgraded to four stars as part of a seven-figure refurbishment that will see it become a 146-room Mercure this year.

Parent company Accor announced the deal last year and said the revamped hotel will see a real focus on the ‘market town’ history of Northampton, celebrating both the history and future of the Market Square.

LOCAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SETS OUT TO PROVIDE MORE GRANT AWARDS AND SUPPORT TO VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES AND SUPPORT LOCAL GOOD IN 2024

The county’s leading independent grant-making charity has started the year with news of new funds, new challenges, over £1.8 million already awarded to groups across Northamptonshire since April 2023, and being on target to award at least £2.5 million by April this year in grants to small, local charities, volunteer-led organisations and community groups.

Rachel McGrath, CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “Our exciting 2024 plans starts this month with the launch of our new Corporate Giving Network, which will enable local businesses to collaborate in supporting vital projects across the county.

“We will also be launching new funding programmes this year; we’ll keep working with donors to provide strategic responses to local need including tackling poverty, resourcing legal aid and environmental philanthropy, we’ll host a number of community celebration events including a collaboration with the historic 78 Derngate, and we’ll continue our ongoing work to champion our brilliant local charities with initiatives such as the Rose of Northamptonshire Awards in partnership with our local councils.

“We are looking forward to another year of working closely with all our generous donors and partners, to ensure their generosity and dedication to local giving makes the best impact possible for our county.”

Northamptonshire Community Foundation awards grants to organisations across all four corners of the county. Recent grant awards include £5,000 to Manna House Trust to establish a counselling and suicide-prevention service for the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in Northamptonshire; £3,000 to The Shack Food Project to fund their Community Christmas parcels for 300 families, and £3,000 to The Never Alone Project to sustain their Warm Welcome initiative.

This month, Northamptonshire Community Foundation will launch its first dedicated Rural Community Needs Fund, which is the outcome of the foundation’s Shining a Spotlight on Rural Community Needs appeal. The appeal, which aims to ensure rural communities get their fair share of funding, has so far raised over £137,000 thanks to a generous support from a number of local donors and partners and a match fund commitment from the Constance Travis Charitable Trust.

Alex Rex, Grants Manager at Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “The Rural Community Needs Fund will award grants of up to £10,000 for projects that will better the lives of those living in our local rural communities.

“We’re thrilled to have met this milestone and to be able to launch our Rural Community Needs Fund at the end of January. We will be welcoming applications from organisations working in our local rural communities to develop community networks, improve health and wellbeing and/or refurbish community assets. We look forward to sharing case studies of the projects we’ve funded once we’ve awarded the first grants.”

As well as the launch of a new fund, 2024 is the year of a new challenge for Northamptonshire Community Foundation. The foundation is taking part in the Franklin’s 50 Challenge initiative, run by Franklin’s Solicitors. Local businesses can sign up to support their chosen charity, from a selection of six, and must then use the £50 starter provided by Franklins to fundraise as much as they can. Any amount fundraised on behalf of Northamptonshire Community Foundation will go to the Rural Community Needs Fund, after being match funded by the Constance Travis Charitable Trust.

NEW VULCAN WORKS TENANT PRAISES WORKSPACE’S INNOVATION

The CEO of a recruitment company specialising in IT and digital has moved his team into Northampton’s Vulcan Works after praising the workspace for its impressive innovation and culture.

Darren Sharp, founder of S-SA Digital, moved into Vulcan Works at the beginning of January, saying there’s “no better place you can be” for businesses in his industry. S-SA Digital has been established for almost 17 years and is renowned for its talent acquisition prowess. It boasts some big household names as clients as well as having smaller start-up businesses on its books. Darren became aware of Vulcan Works through his work with Digital Northants, which celebrates and promotes the county’s innovation. S-SA Digital has been a part of the initiative since its inception. He decided to move to Vulcan Works to create a new immersive, creative culture for his team of six employees, who were previously housed at Silverstone Innovation Centre.

Darren said: “Silverstone was great, we had a good four years there but at Vulcan Works, we are right in the heart of the town centre, the location and infrastructure are fantastic. There’s not been anywhere like this until now.

“We wanted to build a culture purely embedded in the tech and digital environment and what Vulcan Works has achieved as an innovation and business hub cannot be overlooked. It made perfect sense to move here.”

Already S-SA Digital, which builds talent teams across the UK but also has a strong homegrown presence in Northampton, has settled in well to its new home.

“So far it has been absolutely superb,” said Darren. “The interest that moving in here has created has been unreal. There’s been a lot of noise around it.

“I’ve got a new meeting everyday with people coming to Vulcan Works to see me, which is unheard of, a real rarity. I love it.”

Darren is now looking to partner with Vulcan Works to build a tech club for likeminded businesses to meet and share best practices.

He said: “The tech companies I work with have been to events here, so they know it’s a great place to be. We are looking to do some other expansion pieces like building a club where techies can get together for events. There’s no better place for it.

“I’ve had clients move to Vulcan Works too, which has been so great to see. It shows the right people are moving in and a community of similar artistic, inventive people is building. We are already creating a culture and working environment conducive to the arena we are in, and it is easy to see why anyone in that environment would be attracted.”

PREFERRED DEVELOPER ANNOUNCED FOR A MAJOR £130+ MILLION NORTHAMPTON REGENERATION PROJECT

West Northamptonshire Council has confirmed that National regeneration developer, Cityheart has been announced as their preferred development partner to bring forward the Four Waterside and Marefair sites. Working in a joint venture partnership with West Northamptonshire Council (‘WNC’) Cityheart will deliver a transformational and ambitious scheme for the town centre.

Situated at the entrance of the town from Northampton’s railway station, the Four Waterside and Marefair scheme is one of the largest brownfield developments in the county with two sites totaling five acres. Work is anticipated to start in 2025 to unlock this space, providing a new hotel, grade A office space for new and existing businesses, high-quality homes and improved paving and planting to elevate the area.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Cityheart works in partnership with councils across the country to rejuvenate towns and cities, including the £135 million Galleries town centre redevelopment in Wigan. This eight acre, highly sustainable mixed-use regeneration site providing a new market and hotel, high-quality homes, leisure venues, coworking space and events space.

This is Cityheart’s first appointment via the Pagabo National Framework Agreement for Developer Led schemes (Region: East Midlands Lot 3c [£40m+] = Mixed Use). WNC has secured a £1.5 million grant from The Towns Fund and a further £7 million from the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone, to help deliver the project which will contribute to the wider transformation across the town.

This funding will enable the development to be brought forward and have a significant impact on the local economy with a projected £130 million gross development value.

The Towns Fund is part of the Government’s plan for ‘Levelling Up’ the UK economy and the Council has secured £24.9 million to invest into transforming Northampton’s Town Centre.

Cllr Daniel Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth, said: “We are delighted to announce that we are working with Cityheart to deliver this significant development.

“This area has stood empty for too long, and we are excited to now begin the relevant preparation before we start work in 2025. Once complete, this development has the potential to have a transformational impact upon Northampton town centre and beyond.”

Andrew Sanderson, development director of Cityheart added: “This superb site will open up the gateway to the town centre from the rail station and will be transformational for Northampton. It will deliver waterside residences and highly sustainable workspace, enhancing the living experience for people in the town centre. Ciyheart is extremely proud to be appointed as preferred developer and we look forward to making a start on the project before the end of the year.”

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEMBERSHIP ORGANISATION BACKING THE PROMPT PAYMENT CODE EDITORIAL

Northamptonshire Membership organisation NNBN is marking their first anniversary of signing the Prompt Payment Code by encouraging businesses leaders to commit to signing the code and helping to reduce the time in payment of invoices.

The Prompt Payment Code (PPC) sets standards for payment practices and best practice and is administered by the Small Business Commissioner on behalf of the Department for Business and Trade. The Code covers prompt payment, as well as wider payment procedures.

The Small Business Commissioner, Liz Barclay, is responsible for regulation and governance of the Prompt Payment Code and signatories of the Code. The Small Business Commissioner has the power to determine which companies become signatories and investigate complaints concerning any signatories. These investigations can result in the Prompt Payment Code Compliance Board suspending or removing signatories from the Code.

The criteria for joining the Prompt Payment Code is:

• Pay suppliers on time

• Give clear guidance to suppliers

• Encourage good practice

• Pay 95% of all invoices within 60 days

• Pay 95% of all invoices within 30 days where the supplier is a small business with fewer than 50 employees

• Avoid any practices that have an adverse effect on the supply chain

• Late payments can have a significant impact on the UK and local business economies and can lead to several negative consequences for business leaders including cashflow issues, increased borrowing costs, stifled growth, operational challenges and ultimately business closures.

NNBN Director Simon Cox said “The UK Government and various business organisations have taken steps to address this issue, but additionally business leaders can also take steps by committing to signing the Prompt Payment Code and helping to reduce late payments.”

“We signed the PPC last November to commit our organisation to our suppliers and are proud that we took this step meaning that payment of invoices to our suppliers are paid on time and often ahead of payment terms.”

“We feel, as an organisation that is active around the Northamptonshire business community, that we should ensure local businesses are aware of the Prompt Payment Code and should consider signing the code to commit to reducing late payments.”

LOCAL

ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP

SET FOR SMOOTH TRANSFER

Businesses can expect a seamless transition when the functions of the local enterprise partnership transfer to West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) this spring.

The move follows the Government’s decision last year to end core funding for Local Enterprise Partnerships from 31 March 2024, to allow for continuing services to be run through local authorities.

From the start of April 2024, WNC will take the role of host for the continuing functions from the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP). This includes:

• Strategic regional economic planning

• The Growth Hub, a government-backed business support service which provides free 1-2-1 advice, guidance and resources to assist businesses located in the South East Midlands to realise growth ambitions and overcome constraints.

• The Careers Hub, which connects local employers to individual schools, colleges and training providers to coordinate careers education to the needs of the region’s economy and enhance each student’s early experiences of the workplace.

• This approach was agreed collectively by the six local authorities in the South East Midlands –Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire.

The Central Area Growth Board, made up of the leaders of each authority, will provide the initial governance structure, prior to the establishment of a joint committee. The board will be supported by a newly formed Business Board with representatives from the business community across the area.

The Business board will play a critical role in ensuring businesses across the South East Midlands have a hand in shaping the economy, and a voice on issued that affect them.

Cllr Jonathan Nunn, Leader of West Northamptonshire Council and Co-chair of the Growth Board, said: “We’re committed to ensuring the businesses and individuals who have been so brilliantly supported by SEMLEP will experience a smooth transition.

“In the coming months and years, we’ll also dedicate our efforts across the South East Midlands to building on the great work that’s been done by everyone so far.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming some fantastic new colleagues, albeit that we’ve already been working closely with them for some years.”

Final preparations are now being made to transfer staff and functions to WNC as the host authority, along with the agreed budget for their management.

DELAPRÉ ABBEY TO GET ITS OWN FOOD FESTIVAL THIS SUMMER

The creators of Towcester Food Festival and Bite Street NN are launching a brand new gastronomic extravaganza this summer – the Delapré Food Festival. The food and drink festival will take place within the beautiful surrounds of Delapré Abbey, which organiser Crispin Slee says is tailor-made for the event.

He said: “It’s such a special place and the perfect spot for the festival. We want to bring the grounds to life for a grand summer weekend celebrating artisan food and drink.”

Delapré Food Festival will feature all the temptations that made Towcester Food Festival so popular – bustling with food and drink stalls, hourly chef demos, tasting sessions and masterclasses.

The outdoor street food market will be curated by Bite Street NN, the Northampton street food pop-up, which regularly features the best traders for miles around.

Many top local chefs are already lined-up to take part on the demo stage. They include Delapré Abbey’s own Bart Polinski, who is head chef at Hibiscus, James Peck and Hannah Dunne from Ember in Wellingborough and Carmela Sereno Hayes, Northampton’s Queen of Italian cuisine.

Tom Warner, the founder of Warner’s Gin in Harrington, will run free gin tasting sessions through the weekend and Josh Moinet of VineBud in Towcester will host a series of wine tasting sessions.

There will also be cheese masterclasses hosted by cheese expert Shane Holland and cocktail masterclasses run by the expert mixologists at Number 13, which has recently opened in Wellingborough to rave reviews.

Crispin added: “It’s really important to us that the festival supports local food and drink businesses, helping them to grow and helping the local food economy.”

One local food hero who has already signed up for the festival is Gary Bradshaw, from Hamm Tun Fine Foods, who makes Cobblers Nibble Cheese. He said: “Having a big show like this in our doorstep is vital for businesses like mine.”

The festival is styled as a “fab day out for foodies and families alike” and will also feature activities for children, including kids cookery classes, run by Rachel Wilson of Cookery Doodle Doo in Towcester.

Richard Clinton, chief executive at Delapré Abbey, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this event. It’s going to be a terrific occasion and will help to support one of Northampton greatest historical assets.”

Delapré Food Festival takes place on Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, opening at 10am on each day. Parking will be within the grounds and is free.

Tickets for are on sale, including Early Bird tickets offering entry for just £10 per person and family tickets at £20. Entry to the festival includes admission to the house.

SILVERSTONE CONFIRMED AS HOME

OF BRITISH

GRAND PRIX

UNTIL 2034 FOLLOWING 10-YEAR FORMULA 1 EXTENSION

Council leaders have welcomed the announcement that Silverstone will remain the home of the British Grand Prix for another 10 years, further strengthening West Northants as a destination of sporting and cultural excellence.

The world-class motorsports venue has announced it will continue to host the British Grand Prix until 2034 after reaching an agreement with Formula 1. This new deal will see Silverstone race into its ninth decade having hosted the first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1950.

Cllr Daniel Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration and Growth, at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “This is fantastic news and we are delighted that the prominent worldrenowned British Grand Prix will continue to be held in West Northamptonshire.

“The event attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year and hugely benefits our tourism and visitor economy while showcasing West Northants to a global audience.

“Our dedicated Economic Growth & Inward Investment Team will be working closely with Silverstone to support their many incredible events and activities in our area. Attracting more visitors to West Northamptonshire, increasing footfall and spend is a top priority. I would like to offer a huge congratulations to Silverstone and we look forward to continuing our close working relationship over the next decade and beyond.”

The British Grand Prix has become one of the largest attended events on the F1 calendar and a pivotal event in West Northamptonshire. Last year’s event attracted some of the biggest names in sport, music and culture, as the race drew in a record crowd of 480,000 across the weekend with over 60,000 fans camping in the local area. This year, fans will enjoy a weekend filled with great racing as well as off-track entertainment including concerts every evening on Silverstone’s main stage headlined by music’s biggest artists, including Stormzy and Kings of Leon.

The 3.6 mile (5.8km), 18-corner Silverstone circuit has been revered by drivers through the ages. 74 years on from Giuseppe Farina’s first victory, a roll call of Formula 1 royalty have taken the chequered flag including Alberto Ascari, Sir Stirling Moss OBE, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark OBE, Jack Brabham AO OBE, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, and Sir Lewis Hamilton MBE, who has a record eight victories. Three other members of the 2024 grid have claimed victory around the famous circuit including two-time winners Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz who took his maiden victory there in 2022.

Great Britain has always played a pivotal role in Formula 1 and today it is home to seven teams competing in the World Championship, many located just a few miles from the circuit. Throughout its history, F1 has contributed significantly to the UK economy, creating thousands of jobs and boosting the country’s manufacturing industry through pioneering research and development projects. F1 also works closely with UK universities and schools to drive interest in STEM subjects, fully funding full-time university scholarships at five universities, running STEM skills workshops across the country and hosting career insight days for school students.

SMES TO FOCUS ON WORKFORCE STABILITY IN 2024 AMID ONGOING ECONOMIC PRESSURES SAYS BAROMETER

Workforce stability is the main focus for SMEs in 2024, despite ongoing economic pressures and an uncertain climate, according to the latest barometer from award-winning people experts HR Solutions.

The results of the fourth annual SME Business Survey from the HR specialists were revealed at Your Business Expo at Sywell Aerodrome this month.

More than half of respondents (54%) said their biggest business issue this year is recession and cost of living, with 47% citing recruitment as a problem and 39% worried about bringing in new business.’

Yet less than a quarter of those surveyed plan to make any redundancies, instead putting an emphasis on efficient resource management.

And with half troubled by maintaining profitability and 56% are concerned about controlling costs, there is little surprise that 53% plan to focus on cost reduction in order to maintain workforce stability and make better use of resources.

Recruitment and employee retention were also revealed to be pressing issues, driven by competitive job markets and the expansion of the talent pool due to remote working. A worried 45% of SMEs are concerned about the need for wage adjustments in line with inflation, 52% believe employee retention is a key issue and 38% are concerned about talent attraction.

In response, SMEs are rightly prioritising employee engagement and HR Solutions recommends that business owners focus on creating an attractive workplace culture that values diversity, encourages open communication, and promotes work-life balance.

A strong company culture not only supports employee retention but also makes the organisation more attractive to potential employees.

The fieldwork for the survey took place at the end of 2023 and the company surveyed businesses that fall into the SME bracket across multiple industries, including manufacturing, aerospace and defence, agriculture, construction and engineering, education, electronics, healthcare, retail, professional services, hospitality, finance, energy, insurance, property, and pharmaceuticals.

CEO Greg Guilford held a seminar at the Your Business Expo event alongside SME Business Survey partners, local digital marketing firm Qoob, and Pulse Group Media – publishers of Business Times and Business MK newspapers – discussing how to navigate the challenges identified by the study.

HELP YOUR BUSINESS EXCEL WITH DATA IN YOUR MARKETING

Have you considered how recording data in your business marketing activities can help you grow?

Without you reading any further, data has been around in business for years, but can data help predict our futures when it comes to marketing?

Think about sport and the performance of racing drivers, footballers, athletes etc, their growth and future performances include historical data to help key decision makers make interesting and more relevant decisions to what they are looking to achieve. It’s the same for business….. and you can start this almost immediately with a sample Excel spreadsheet and an analytical mind.

Here I look at some ideas for you to consider with your marketing and how monitoring data can help you help your marketing going forward with a simple Excel spreadsheet.

MONITOR YOUR COMPETITION

You could start a spreadsheet and identify your competitors in business. Nothing complicated, but list down your competitors on a sheet and record what they are doing. This could be the number of social media posts they put out across the month, how many testimonials they have visible on their social media accounts and how do they rank in search engine searches ?

You could rank your competition with a points scoring system and produce a league table. Maybe 1 point for each social media follower they gain in the month, maybe a further point for the number of Facebook likes they gain on their posts throughout the month and maybe an additional point for each post they put out. Whatever you decide, this will give you an idea of what activity they are involved in with their social media marketing and would give you a focus to start and drill into detail of your competition.

You could measure al this on a set day of a month and compare their activity which means you would be able to increase your activity to still be ahead of them on line with your marketing.

EXPORT YOUR CRM DATA AND ANALYSE THE OUTPUT

Exporting your data from your CRM into Excel can lead to interesting results. You could look at your customer data to spot missing data, analyse out where your customers are located and even the last time they bought from you if you know where to look with the various tables and fields.

By exporting the data into Excel, you could link this to a product such as Power BI which is a free solution and great for analysing data. In the past, I have used Power BI to visually show where customers are located in the UK meaning that we have visibility of their geographic location which can be updated with a future export.

68
FEATURE

SHORT CUTS TO KEY WEBSITES

Have you joined a number of Small Business Facebook groups and no idea how often you post in them ? Why not list them all down in a spreadsheet with the relevant link to the group and then complete dates of when you post in those groups ? You could then measure the engagement from those posts to record if your post is engaging and gaining traction.

You will also be able to market your business with a consistent approach in social media groups by simply entering the date of when you posted in the group and then monitor your activity going forward.

TESTIMONIAL TRACKERS

Tracking testimonials is a great way to increase your marketing activity. You supply your customer and ask them for a review or testimonial. Why not enter the customer details on a new Excel spreadsheet and the date of when you asked them for the testimonial.

In a month’s time, look at your social media accounts and update your spreadsheet with any increase in new testimonials or reviews. If you’ve seen an increase, then great. If you haven’t, by entering the date, this will give you a decision to make – ask the customer again or maybe review for the next month.

HASHTAG ANALYSIS

Do you monitor popular hashtags in your industry ? We know hashtags can play an important role in digitally marketing a particular market, but how popular are they ?

You could identify the growing hashtags in your industry to help you decide whether they are worth targeting with future posts or whether you should consider targeting different hashtags.

A simple search of a specific hashtag on Instagram (for example) will show how many posts have been posted with that hashtag. Maybe monitor this for one month at a set time and date and repeat going forward on a monthly basis. If you see increasing trends, is it worth considering posting with this hashtag ? Maybe another option to consider.

GROUNDWORK NORTHAMPTONSHIRE LAUNCHES NEW CORPORATE CAMPAIGN FOR 2024

Volunteer, donate, host a teambuilding day or select us as your charity of the year – this month the team at Groundwork Northamptonshire are urging organisations across the county to think green and support local.

The charity’s new ‘Partner with Groundwork’ campaign is all about encouraging businesses small and large to think local when running team events and organising volunteering days.

The award-winning Groundwork Northamptonshire runs green, cultural and creative projects across Northamptonshire, as well as working with young people and adults to help them overcoming challenges and find new opportunities.

Kate Williams, Chief Executive of Groundwork Northamptonshire said: “We love working with businesses across Northamptonshire and many big names already use our green spaces to hold their teambuilding days and to run volunteering events for their staff.

“Businesses can also partner with us by fundraising for us or by choosing us as their charity of the year. We work in many areas across Northamptonshire and we offer support to people of all ages. So, if you’re looking for a local charity to become your Charity of the Year, and you feel passionate about supporting your local community, then we could be a great fit for you and your business.”

In the Summer of 2022, a team from Weetabix in Kettering swapped their office-based day jobs for a day of volunteering and team building – helping to spruce up Green Patch, the charity’s Kettering-based community garden.

“At Weetabix, our local community in and around Northamptonshire is very important to us. We got to work together in a completely different way to our day-to-day jobs or typical team building activities, and many of us experienced different outdoor tasks for the first time and learnt plenty from the Green Patch team and volunteers on site.”

NORTHAMPTON NIGHT TIME ECONOMY RECOGNISED GLOBALLY WITH PRESTIGIOUS PURPLE FLAG ACCREDITATION

Northampton is celebrating as it proudly receives the globally acclaimed Purple Flag accreditation, recognising its commitment to creating a dynamic, secure, and vibrant evening and night time economy.

This prestigious award highlights Northampton’s blend of night time entertainment, dining, and culture, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in the evening and night time economy.

Purple Flag, similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm to 5am. There are 100 Purple Flag destinations around the world including world renowned tourist destinations to small market towns.

Receiving the Purple Flag accreditation can boost the local economy, increase tourism, and improve the overall quality of life for residents by providing more night time entertainment and social opportunities. It’s a way for cities and towns to demonstrate their commitment to creating vibrant and safe evening and night time environments.

West Northamptonshire Council, the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and Northampton BID, working with partners, have successfully retained the Purple Flag status for five years. Northampton is one of 10 areas in the UK to have received a Full Renewal accreditation with 13 others receiving an Interim Renewal accreditation.

Key successes in Northampton’s submission include the impressive dedication of the Purple Flag partners, the licensed driver training scheme and the new night time economy strategy.

In the past 3 years, the council alongside partners has delivered a range of initiatives to improve safety in the town centre. This includes investing in ID scan technology in clubs and bars, improvements to street lighting at taxi ranks and other identified dark spaces, launching the Flare App, creating safer walking routes and help points in the Racecourse and Beckets Park, increased CCTV and Police Nightsafe crews around the town centre, and introducing a new Taxi Marshal service to promote safer travelling at nighttime.

The West Community Safety Partnership also led on the development of the It Only Takes One campaign promoting safety advice for women and raising awareness of the impact that harassment and inappropriate behaviour can have while educating bystanders to recognise unacceptable behaviour. In addition, the roll out of ‘Stand by Her’ training was delivered to young men in education to help them understand the impact of harassing behaviour on women.

GOVERNMENT BACKS SMES WITH NEW HELP TO GROW CAMPAIGN AND SMALL BUSINESS COUNCIL

The Government is today reaffirming its commitment to all the UK’s 5.5 million small businesses, with the creation of a new Small Business Council due to launch next month which will bring together SME leaders from across the country.

The Council builds on the Department’s existing support for SMEs and will provide a bespoke forum for small businesses to have their voices represented within Government.

Almost every business in the country is a small business (99.9%) who in turn support 27 million jobs across the UK, accounting for £4.5 trillion of annual turnover –which is why the government is making 2024 the year of the SME.

In addition to the formation of the Council, the Help to Grow campaign and website has also been refreshed to create a one-stop shop for SMEs to find the information they need to grow and scale up. This will include helping small firms to clearly identify what funding they can access, webinars as well as the basics of setting up a business for the first time.

We know that for many people, starting a new business for the very first time can be a daunting process and that’s why the government’s refreshed website features a step-by-step guide with practical advice for people wanting to set up and grow their business in the UK.

The new site will bring together the support on offer from the government into one place, making it quicker and more convenient to find the resources business leaders and budding entrepreneurs need to succeed.

This support includes the new Help to Grow management courses as announced in the Autumn Statement. The Help to Grow: Management scheme is an intensive 12-week programme to improve SME leadership and management skills. SMEs from all sectors are able to access the programme that is 90% subsidised by government. This has already supported nearly 8,000 businesses, with the ambition to support up to 30,000 over the programme’s lifetime.

To mark the refreshed campaign, the Prime Minister will host a panel event in Downing Street with small business leaders including, Tom Beahon of Castore, Tessa Clarke of Olio and Jordan Schwarzenberger of Arcade Media to discuss how to start and scale a successful business in the UK, leveraging talent, technology and the support already on offer.

Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said:

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our local communities and drive the UK’s economy, supporting jobs and wages across the country.

“This new Council will mean SMEs have a clear voice at the table and we can deliver on the key needs for business”
