The New Jersey State Dental Society was organized October 25, 1870, in the lecture room of the YMCA, at Trenton, NJ, in response to a “Call” signed by twenty-seven prominent dentists in the state. The “Call” is indicative of ardent hopes, lofty aspirations, and a spirit of intelligent activity.

The New Jersey Dental Association has witnessed and gone through many changes during its 150 years. In preparation for our 150th Anniversary year, as President-Elect and President, I happily oversaw the planning of a full calendar of celebratory events to honor our members and our association.

We had no way to foresee what was to come. As we all know – everything changed. As we entered the month of March 2020, talk of Covid-19 became rampant. On March 16, based upon information we received fromthe CDC, ADAand the State Department of Health, the NJDABoard of Trustees made the unanimous recommendation to release a statement from President-Elect, Dr. Mitchell Weiner and I that NJ dentists voluntarily suspend nonurgent dental care for two weeks. Two weeks extended into nearly three months. The economic impact on our profession was devastating. As the crisis continued to unfold, the NJDAleadership, at every level, worked tirelessly to support our members through this difficult time.

Our Anniversary year has most definitely emphasized one thing. As a result of what we have gone through over these past several months, it became evident that the New Jersey Dental Association will continue to be the voice of our profession in New Jersey.

While I could have never foreseen becoming NJDAPresident in the middle of a pandemic, I have a strong kinship with my fellow members as we all acclimate to our profession and practices ‘new normal’. We are stronger together and the NJDAinfrastructure we have collectively built has advocated for and continues to sustain us in our recovery. I have the privilege of working alongside a talented group of staff, fellow line officers, Trustees and component leaders on behalf of our membership. We are executing a legislative and legal agenda, media campaign and continuing education programming that protects your interests. I amproud of what we are doing as an Association and as a profession in the face of unprecedented adversity. An interview with

Dr. Seema Nerurkar Now in her 20th year as a member, Dr. Seema Nerurkar has owned her practice in Little Falls, NJ since 2003. NJDA Membership Outreach Manager, Bill Cook, recently chatted with Dr. Nerurkar over Zoom.

Here is part of their conversation.

Cook: You’ve owned your practice for 17 years… and then COVID happens. What has it been like navigating your business through the pandemic?

Nerurkar: I had just come back from a vacation at the end of February when we were getting reports of the virus being in Washington state. Around the middle of March, we got the emails from ADA and NJDA recommending that we close. I’ve been an ADA member since I was a student at NYU and I’ve never had an email where they’re telling me not to practice. It’s coming from dentists. The ADA and NJDA are run by dentists and they are not going to tell me that very lightly. They are in the same boat as me, running a business, and they know more information than I do. And that was my trust level. Then I shut down.

Cook: Yeah, information you can trust is so important in a crisis. What happened next?

Nerurkar: I did not lay off my employees at that point because I wasn’t sure how.

I let them stay on for another two weeks until the Governor shut us down. It was very high anxiety wondering if we were exposed already. How long is this going to last? How are we going to manage? I mean, at what point would I have to close my practice in terms of rent and overhead.

Cook: There was so much uncertainty during that time.

Nerurkar: As it progressed, we were shut down for two and a half months. I did keep my practice open for emergencies only. But I was the only person coming in because the staff was laid off. I just felt I’m here because of them and not the other way around. I am what I am because of their loyalty to me. And I couldn’t abandon them no matter what the risk was to me.

I did do a little bit of teledentistry or told patients to send me pictures so I could

determine how severe something was. I felt I couldn’t say “go somewhere else”, because there was nowhere else to go.

I couldn’t send them to an Emergency Room because that would be an even higher risk.

Cook: Shifting gears a bit… Looking back on your career and organized dentistry can you recall your first interaction with organized dentistry?

Nerukar: When my younger daughter was two years old, I thought, “okay I’m ready.”

I took one day a month to leave the kids with my husband and I went off to the Passaic County Dental Society. My first interaction... I remember the women in that meeting, Dr. Ambrosio, Dr. Michaud, Dr. Galvis they just included me right away. Like I walked in the door and they welcomed me and they just sat with me and talked… and I think I never left.

Cook: That is a great example of the camaraderie members can find in an Association like ours.

that we would pay on teeth whitening that was finally taken away, and it was only because of NJDPAC (New Jersey Dental Political Action Committee) and what they did for us.

Cook: Over the years you have helped with Membership & Government Affairs for your component. What inspired you to get involved?

Nerurkar: My father was somebody who volunteers. He always gave back and so I had that as a role model. It wasn’t anything that he said, I just saw him do it.

So, I always felt the sense that I have to give back and be involved.

Cook: When was the last time your interacted with NJDA? Nerurkar: I think I called Art (Meisel, Executive Director and General Counsel) for a staffing question.

Cook: Have you done any ADA or NJDA webinars or online workshops?

Nerurkar: That’s one thing about organized dentistry. It’s like that saying about a bundle of sticks. Tied together, you can’t break them. But you untie it and you can break each stick. That’s how I feel with organized dentistry. If we just stay together then we are much stronger.

Nerurkar: I did when we were closed for the virus. They had financial experts talk about all the different loans. I did some of those and they were helpful.

Cook: Do you participate in or follow the political and legislative side of organized dentistry?

Nerurkar: I used to attend the Annual Sessions. I rarely missed one. I used to go to the NJDA headquarters, too.

Nerurkar: I do now, because I am the representative for government affairs from Passaic County. I started off doing membership but I switched to government affairs about two years ago. So I am new to it.

Cook: Did you see or hear that it was totally renovated recently?

It’s been eye-opening how important it is, even the local elections. In terms of what legislation is passed and how we are always lumped together with the medical profession. I remember the cosmetic tax

Cook: Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of chances to see it when we can start having gatherings again.

Cook: What about in person programs or events?

Nerurkar: Yes, yes, I know. I used to come there for meetings and now we can’t even come in and take a look.

THE HISTORY OF NJDA Organized on October 25, 1870 as the New Jersey State Dental Society, the NJDA’s beginnings go back to the lecture roomof the YMCAin Trenton, NJ. Twenty-seven prominent dentists in the state “called” for other dentists to join themin Trenton for a convention with the purpose of forming the society, and to “devise and adopt such other measures as may be deemed essential to our mutual improvement, and for the elevation of our common profession.”

The first issue of the NJ Dental Journal was published. Dr. Charles S. Hardy was Editor, Dr. Edward T. Taylor was Advertising Manager and Dr. T.J. McLernon was Secretary-Treasurer.

The society sent its first delegate to the American Dental Association.

Essex Dental Society, the first component society was founded.

James B. Morrison received a patent for the first commercially manufactured foot-treadle dental engine. Morrison’s inexpensive, mechanized tool supplies dental burs with enough speed to cut enamel and dentin smoothly and quickly, revolutionizing the practice of dentistry.

George F. Green received a patent for the first electric dental engine, a self-contained motor and handpiece.

University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ was founded as the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Local anesthesia was introduced by W.S. Schey.

The first annual banquet for the President of NJ Dental Society was held on March 15, 1913 at the Hotel Sterling, Trenton NJ, in honor of Dr. WilliamI. Thompson.

On November 18, 1998 the House of Delegates of the NJDA voted unanimously to revise its bylaws in order to create a new component. The New Student Component was established at UMDNJ (University of Medical and Dentistry of NJ).

New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry was established May 3, 1965 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.

Dr. D.L. McLean was inducted as NJDA’s first African American president.

Dr. Maxine Feinberg was inducted as NJDA’s first female president.

NJ was the first state to designate February as “Children’s Dental Health Month.”

An interview with

Dr. Matthew Mansey Now in his 10th year out of dental school – and final year being considered a ‘New Dentist’ - Dr. Matthew Mansey recently opened his own practice in Washington, NJ. NJDA Membership Outreach Manager, Bill Cook, recently sat down with Dr. Mansey over Zoom.

Here is their conversation.

Cook: You recently opened your own practice. In a pandemic. Let’s start there.

What was that process like?

Mansey: Well, let’s just say opening during a pandemic wasn’t part of the original plan, but actually there is a silver lining in a way.

For starters, I have to be truly thankful to the seller, Dr. Drew Griffith. His family has been providing dental care in Washington, NJ for over 60 years. He kept saying he was waiting for the right person to take over his practice and he felt I would be the perfect fit. The closing was delayed quite a few times – first in November, then Christmas, then March... and there’s a pandemic! Had he not been so patient and trusting the sale may have fallen through. If the closing hadn’t been delayed I would have been a new business owner with a big loan with closed doors. I don’t know if I Credit Card Processing

would have survived the shutdown financially. I wouldn’t have been able to apply for any PPP loans with minimal employment and payroll history. So after dental offices were advised to reopen, we planned the closing, on June 22nd. We’ve been taking it day by day but it’s actually been busy ever since.

Cook: Well, I guess it all worked out.

Mansey: Yes, and during the whole process NJDA was there. Whenever I called the office, I got guidance and that gave me confidence. Art (Meisel, Executive Director and General Counsel), is a great resource, I definitely bounced questions off of him. The legal steps of the practice transition can be intimidating.

I must also acknowledge (former Director of Dental Benefits) Joan Monaco, who gave me her thoughts when I first started looking at the practice. She gave me a lot of confidence and help with ideas on how to grow the practice.

Cook: So, back to Covid-19. You were dealing with all the new reopening guidelines as you opened up for the first time. What role did organized dentistry play in how you approached Covid-19?

Mansey: It was super critical. Had I not been an NJDA or ADA member, I would have been scrambling to find information I could trust. The ADA and NJDA helped to interpret the CDC guidelines and made it clear how to follow new protocols, and how dental offices needed to abide. For me, it was a lot of peace of mind. I kept thinking, “alright, as long as we do this, we’re doing what we’re supposed to do and the public is going to see the practice as a safe establishment.” I also wanted to be very mindful of my staff who stayed with me for the transition. As their new employer, I wanted to ensure them that the practice would maintain a safe working environment, I am very grateful for their continued support.

Cook: This interview is about your career and organized dentistry. Let’s start at the beginning. Describe your first interactions with organized dentistry.

Mansey: When I finished my residency, I started working for a few offices. They weren’t really involved with organized dentistry but they did help me out with CE. In my third year out, I moved to a new office. I was kind of on my own with CE and I thought, “I am doing NJDA, maybe I’ll go to those meetings”.

Cook: And what was that like?

Mansey: My first component meeting was one with the NJDA officer visitation. I was welcomed by Maureen Barlow and Joan Monaco during the cocktail hour and we continued to have a very friendly conversation about my career and NJDA. I think, if I had done that early on, like I know some of the Rutgers students already do, it would have been way easier to find an associate position that would have led to a practice transition and/or ownership sooner. Going to component meetings, just meeting people, colleagues, has been helpful for me. It just helps you branch out and stay connected with your peers.

Cook: Any examples come to mind?

Mansey: Yes. When I finally decided I’d like to own my own practice I started to work with a dental broker and the practice that I eventually bought was one of their listings. But I immediately passed even though it wasn’t far from my house. But then a colleague and family friend I know from NJDA reached out to me saying, “I know you’re looking for a practice. I heard about this practice that’s for sale, and I think it would be a good fit for you.” He more or less put us together, and had he not had my best interest in mind I may still be looking for a practice.

Cook: Over the years you served as Membership Chair for your component.

What inspired you to get involved?

Cook: Do you participate in or follow the political and legislative side of organized dentistry?

Mansey: I don’t particularly follow our political agenda, I just know that the NJDA has my best interest in mind. So it’s worth supporting. It is worth every penny to support the ADA, NJDA and ADPAC, so that the profession can hold its own, now and for the future. That’s like a no brainer to me.

Cook: When was the last time you interacted with NJDA? Mansey: Last time I interacted with NJDA was early in April... I was watching the webinars and then throughout the practice sale I talked to people on the NJDA staff. Prior to that, it was component meetings. And, last time I saw you was

when I was down to NJDA (Headquarters) which looks very professional by the way (with the new remodel), for a wellness CE event.

Cook: Yeah, the yoga program was the week before the shutdown.

Mansey: As a practice owner, I’d like to provide my staff with the proper CPR and OSHA training. So utilizing the classes will be good there (at NJDA HQ). NJDA is able to provide affordable CE that we all need on topics that offer a variety of interests.

In closing, NJDA helps keep the positive moral we all need to succeed in our profession. As a new business owner, having a few good mentors is really critical. Creating a healthy work/life balance is very important (hard to do without some guidance). I’m proud of what I do and I would like to make sure others who follow in years to come have the same privilege to enjoy our profession.

Congratulations Rutgers Class of 2020!

Message from Justin Dinowitz, DMD, Class President On March 13th, 2020, dental school graduation was nearly two months away. Two weeks prior, the Class of 2020 had just completed their CDCA licensing exams (with an impressive passing rate), and most students were well on their way to completing their clinical requirements.

At this point, all we had to look forward to were the celebratory dinners and the well-deserved convocation ceremony. Little did we know that March 13th would be our last day together as one.

The week following, we received the news that the school would be closed for an undetermined amount of time. Of course, we all knew that COVID-19 would have an impact on our graduation, but nobody could have predicted that the rest of the year would be completed virtually. Uncertainty inevitably flooded the class, as students were worried that requirements would not be met and unsure if they would be able to start residency on time. As class president, I found myself playing two roles here. One was discussing with the school administration what we thought were going to be the best ways to graduate our class on time. The other, was providing words of comfort to the class that all would be okay and that we all would receive our diplomas in time to start residency. As a class, we had Zoom meetings multiple times a week to discuss the changes the administration were actively making to the curriculum in order to ensure a timely graduation. Certain requirements were reduced, and others were converted to a virtual format to mimic a clinical scenario as close as possible.

In the end, a large majority of the class had their degrees conferred on the initial day of graduation, which was May 17th, 2020. We were also given a virtual graduation ceremony online on May 28th, 2020, and remaining of the class were completely graduated by mid-June. The Class of 2020 looks forward to reuniting in the future, when the time allows, where we can be together as one again, and reminisce of our times together. We hope that staff, faculty, and administration can join us as we envision a bittersweet closure to the journey that we call “Dental School”.

NJDPAC

NJDA’s Political Arm From early in my career, serving on the Executive Committee of a medical center and on the Steering Committee of a health insurer, it became evident to me that good relationships are essential to any success. That mantra became amplified as I assumed various roles in organized dentistry culminating in my current role as chair of the New Jersey Dental Political Action Committee.

I recall first meeting Dr. Charles Perle, our esteemed NJDPAC Chair Emeritus, at an NJDA Annual Session. Shortly after I approached the NJDPAC booth to learn more about political action, I realized Charles had my credit card in his hand even before I knew his name. Then, with a toast of Drambuie to my contribution, my fate had been sealed. Governmental Affairs and Political Action were about to become my central focus as a leader in organized dentistry.

Throughout the years, I have met many politicians and had substantive conversations about our profession. Those experiences, both state and federally, have crystalized to me how critical these relationships are to ensure that we tell our story and not be subjugated by others who do not understand, nor have our profession, nor our patient’s, best interests in mind. Political action is the cornerstone to building and strengthening these relationships.

My current role as NJDPAC chair is to educate others, especially young dentists, that participation in political action, at any level, is essential to controlling their professional destiny. As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

Give Back to the Profession C​​onsider giving back to your community by participating in a program such as Give Kids A Smile, Smiles for Our Heroes, Veterans Smile Day or Dental Lifeline Network. These programs are supported by both the New Jersey Dental Association and American Dental Association and recruit both clinical and non-clinical volunteers.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE February

Give Kids A Smile Day is a national program supported by the ADA and locally by the NJDA. On the first Friday of February, volunteers in the dental community open their hearts and doors to provide free dental care to children who could not otherwise afford dental services.

SMILES FOR OUR HEROES November

Smiles For Our Heroes is a two-day event providing free dental care to eligible vets and their families. This program is sponsored by Zufall Health, Delta Dental of NJ, and the NJDA. The week-end brings together volunteer dental professionals who perform dental services ranging from cleanings to extractions and dentures.

DENTAL LIFELINE NETWORK Year-round

The N​JDA and the ADA are proud to support this program spearheaded by our partner Dental Lifeline Network. As a member of our community, please consider volunteering and donate comprehensive treatment to at least one veteran with special needs each year. VETERANS SMILE DAY November

The “Veterans Smile Day” mission is to provide free dental care and support to our military veterans as our small way of thanking them for their service. Our hope is that in the process, veteran’s will find a permanent dental home for themselves and their families.

A Message from the Executive Director Art Meisel, Esq.

Since attending the dedication of the NJDA headquarters building in June 1972 as outside legal counsel and subsequently being appointed to serve as Executive Director beginning January 1, 2000, I have had the unique opportunity and profound good-fortune to witness and to participate in the extraordinary transformation of the Association. At the time of its re-location to North Brunswick from Camden almost a half-century ago, the Association resembled a social club with countless ideas and lofty aspirations. During the almost five decades that followed, it has become a significant resource and a highly effective and respected advocate for its members, both in New Jersey and nationally.

Over the years, the Association was blessed to have a steady stream of passionate and devoted leaders. They have worked tirelessly with NJDA’s talented and dedicated staff to establish a team that maintains as its principal focus the creation of member value. Despite being severely tested by the COVID-19 pandemic, that team powered through with tenacity and resolve to provide much-needed, uninterrupted services to the members.

As the next fifty years is about to be launched, substantial renovations and improvements have been completed to the public spaces at the headquarters building. In addition to making the facility compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, additional meeting space was added and technological enhancements were installed. The edifice now is far more functional and projects an image which should make member dentists proud.

I am inspired by the enthusiasm and commitment of our dentist leaders and Association staff. There is every reason to have confidence that the challenges of the next fifty years, like those of the past, will be confronted and overcome.
