Q. How has your journey been as an actress from Janasheen, your debut film, to Seasons Greetings, your most recent film? My journey has been one of evolution. I started in the fashion industry at the tender age of 14 as a runway model and went on to win Miss India and Miss Universe runners-up at a very young age. Despite having great experience in the fashion and modeling industry I had to learn everything from the start when I joined the film industry. Feroz khan introduced me with great pride and love and Suniel Shetty treated me with great kindness and love as I was the leading lady of his first home production as well. After that, while I enjoyed phenomenal record-breaking successes like Aneesj Bazmi ji’s “No Entry”, Subhash Ghai’s “APNA Sapna money money”, and Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal Returns” as an actor I was not quite satisfied. It took me 16 years to win my first Filmfare, which was last year, for Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s Seasons Greetings. Along this way, I realized that this journey wasn’t a piece of cake, it demanded me to be resilient. Someone once said, A mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions. I am glad of the path I am now on. The offers and projects that I am doing now truly celebrate my real talent and charisma. I can only say one thing, despite all its agonies and ecstasies I am very grateful to our film industry for such a phenomenal and rich life journey. June ‘22

Q. Since your father was a Colonel in the Indian Army, you had the opportunity to experience living in various cities and towns of India. How would you describe this experience? I belong to a fourth-generation armed forces family, and moving around in India and overseas was a blessed part of my upbringing. As an army kid, you grow up in 4 different houses and have attended three different schools in just a few years, you know how to adapt to new situations. You are quick to pick up new lessons and languages. These skills have served me throughout life. We army kids have a heightened appreciation for diversity as well, I picked up many languages, learned about various religions and communities, and above all maturity is an asset that often comes hand in hand with flexibility in Army kids. Military children cope with difficult situations—such as separation from parents and friends—early on in their lives, and these events enable them to pursue new experiences and develop skills they might not have otherwise. I owe a lot of my achievements to my upbringing as an army kid and I am forever grateful to the Indian Army for taking such good care of officers and jawans families. Q. Which city or town would you pick as your favorite, and why?

Udhampur was the first grand military base I had ever lived in. I got to make friends with children from the airforce and other arms of the Indian armed forces as well and it was a very enriching experience. Q. How different is your life in Austria with your family? Alpine sense of life is an attitude, a lifestyle, and a sense of belonging. It has truly also impacted me positively as an actor, my life here has helped me reach deep within and connect to the performer in my soul also specifically after losing both my parents 3 years ago living in the Austrian alps helped me heal by keeping me connected to my blessed childhood in the Himalayan valleys of India. The energy of the Alps is the most palpable in the morning. Dawn rises over the mountain ridges and crowns them with a band of sunlight. There is no stop-and-go traffic, no car horns, no crowded public transport, and no need to be anywhere else. Instead, birds chirp in the trees behind your house and somewhere a church bell rings. The smell of the forest and cut grass wafts in through the window. In the mountains you wake up knowing that the day is full of opportunities like these, to pause, breathe in the fresh air, and take time for yourself.

Q. As the winner of Femina Miss India 2001, what is the one thing you learned during I believe Udhampur in J&K, Tawang your journey that has always in Arunachal Pradesh, and Ahmed- stuck to you? abad top the list as I’ve had the most phenomenal impact in these three The crown rested on my head places specifically. Udhampur was the only for one year but I have had an first grand military base I had ever incredible journey shouldering the lived in. responsibility of the crown these 21 years.

Crowns after all are not made of sparkling stones they are made of sheer determination, strength, dedication, devotion, struggle, and immense courage too. Beauty is a Powerful Tool of Persuasion and I am so thankful for having the opportunity to represent my country on various platforms since I won back in 2001. From being an award-winning actorto a UN goodwill ambassador, I have phenomenal opportunities to make the most of all my abilities to lead and inspire in any way I can. I thank you all for your continued love and support and adulation. Having said that, remember: being beautiful is not being “born beautiful” it is striving lifelong to live and achieve your maximum potential as a human being. Q. Along with being an actress, you are also a Champion of the United Nations Free & Equal Campaign. What is your biggest responsibility to date? Each of us has a unique part to play in the healing of the world. When I jumped into the LGBTQIA rights (abolition of section 377 and recognition of Trans rights/ gender) It was a time when no one was willing to be even remotely associated with the cause of the LGBTQIA community in India. At that time, I decided to not seek validation as silence was never a friend to this mission, it practically meant siding with perpetrators of inequality and injustice. In simpler words, it is like watching a murder before you and not doing anything about it. In July 2013, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) launched UN Free & Equal – an unprecedented global UN public information aimed at promoting equal rights and fair treatment of LGBTI people. I was appointed an equality champion after my work of a decade came to light. In 2017, UN Free & Equal reached 2.4 billion social media feeds around the world and generated a stream of widely shared materials; including powerful videos, impactful graphics, and plain-language f a c t sheets.

Several campaign videos – including my debut solo with Neeraj Shreedhar were released: “The Welcome” – ranks among the most-watched videos ever produced by the United Nations. National UN Free & Equal campaigns and events have been organized in almost 30 countries, with visible support from the UN, political, community, and religious leaders, and celebrities in all regions of the world. My pursuit for equality will continue till God permits and the life I have earned solely by hard work and determination will not go waste. Q. Having expressed so much on the equality of the LGBTQ community, what do you think are the most notable struggles of the LGBTQI community currently? There is still a big lack of understanding about LGBTQIA in India and around the world. Biggest block: we are not ready to educate ourselves about homosexuality. India is a vast and diverse country and attitudes towards this subjectand the experiences of LGBTI individuals vary vastly. The disparity between urban and rural India, language, caste, class, and gender adds further complexities to understanding this topic more fully. Attitudes are shifting in many parts of the world and Governments are gradually stepping forward and implementing necessary reform; sec 377 being revoked on 6 Sept 2018 and the transgender protection bills being updated and presented in 2019. Having said that, it is extremely important to revise and introduce laws that provide and allow the LGBT community the fundamental right to marriage and adoption. I truly believe the introduction of same-sex marriage will enhance the safety, self-esteem, health, and well-being of LGBTQ people. There are considerable mental health and well-being benefits conferred on those in the fortunate position of being able to marry legally. And there are associated deleterious impacts of being denied this opportunity.

Q. Please tell us a little about your family. I come from a very mixed family but am extremely proud to be a 4th generation military family. My father (Colonel VK Jaitly) was a Hindu and my mother (Dr. Meeta Jaitly) a Christian of Afghan descent. I grew up in a family with very liberal views where education and patriotism were treated as a religion. I turned to Buddhism at a very young age and my parents encouraged me. My husband (Peter Haag) who is an Austrian is very liberal in his thinking as well, and we encourage our three sons to study the good in all religions and decide which they want to adopt or devote their consciousness to when they are big enough. Recently I learned some amazing information about my lineage from my father’s side. I learned that Jaitlys are originally from the Pir Panjal region of Jammu and Kashmir, a part of Punjabi Saraswat Brahmins who settled in the northwest frontier province for many generations. Much to my amusement some of my genealogy traces back to historical figures like “Ranjha” (of Heer and Ranjha story) and in more ancient Era to Vatsa gotra from the sage Brahmarishi Bhrigu. Q. What is the one thing you swear by to keep your skin flawless? Rosehip oil and sunscreen. I am completely won over by these two products and stand behind them. I use Rosehip oil for everything from makeup removal to moisturizing. I believe in protecting my skin from damage caused by the sun by applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, believe me, it’s all you need. Q. What’s your fitness regime? “The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.” Working out is a lifestyle for me and not something I need to take out time for. Even throughout my two twin pregnancies, I worked out until the doctor said otherwise. I believe in Yoga and weightlifting they are my usual go-to. I do high-altitude hiking for cardio. Q. What advice would you like to share with women in professions becoming new mothers? I truly believe motherhood presents an opportunity to reassess your career and think about your job in a whole new way. Being a new mom is such a wonderful and fleeting time. Great clarity can arise out of the unpredictability and stress of this period, and it can offer you the opportunity to re-evaluate what is important to you.

SUMMER SKINCARE S

d e i f i l imp

Step 1: Cleanser Skin can get extremely oily when the air is hot and humid, and we are likely to sweat more in the summer than in other seasons. Cleaning twice daily with a foamy face cleanser is the ideal skin care regimen for keeping summer skin matte but hydrated. Try the Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, a foaming face wash that refreshes skin and gives a smooth squeaky finish. With an infusion of Glycerin and Calendula, the creamy gel forms a foamy texture when blended with water, helps cleanse the impurities, and improves hydration for healthy glowing skin. Price – INR 2,400/-

June ‘22

Step 2: Toner Including a good toner in your skincare routine is vital. While toners may feel like water, their benefits are nothing less than those of other products. Cleansers are highly effective, but toners go the extra mile and remove all the remaining dirt and gunk that causes breakouts. They also give your skin an even tone and smooth texture. The Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner is a must-try. It is an effective pore tightening toner which has been a customer favorite since the 1960s. It is infused with Calendula flower petals, Burdock Root Extract, and Allantoin to smoothen the skin and keep it healthy. Price – INR 1,700/-

Step 3: Moisturizer Moisturizing your skin is of the utmost importance all year round. Yes, this applies to even the stickiest of summer months when your skin already feels oily. The hack is to opt for a lightweight moisturizer that will keep your skin healthy without weighing it down and making you feel greasy. The Kiehl’s Ultra Facial OilFree Gel Cream has a 24-hour hydrating power, with a cooling effect as it helps maintain skin’s moisture balance and regulates excess oil production leaving the skin fresh-feeling and healthier-looking all day. Price – INR 2,550/-

20

Step 4: Sunscreen If you do nothing else this summer, you need to wear sunscreen at the very least. Protecting your skin from the sun and its harmful effects are important and this one product will do all the work for you. The Kiehl’s Ultra-Light Daily UV Defense Anti-Pollution SPF 50++is a lightweight, effective sunscreen that doubles as a pollution protector. It has the right blend of mineral ingredients to provide UVA/UVB and pollution protection, along with a powerful occlusive vitamin E that locks the moisture into the skin to ensure a dewy glow throughout the day. Price – INR 3,000/-

For best results, repeat this routine in the morning and at night. The only exception will be to add sunscreen to your routine in the AM. This summer, simply do your skincare with Kiehl’s India and enjoy your fun-filled adventures without worrying about your skin health.

JOURNEY TO JETSETGO

KANIKA TEKRIWAL REDDY Indian women have always been familiar with facing restrictions and aggravating scrutinity in each aspect of their lives. While most women have their lives laid down before them - preplanned by their loved ones; getting married, managing a household, and raising a family, there exist exceptional women who thrive with sheer determination and their full potential to break the barriers to pursue everything they set their heart to. Kanika Tekriwal Reddy has also encountered similar curtailments from her typical Marwadi family. However, with her irrepressible character, she was determined to achieve her goals. Initially aiming to become a pilot, her vision gradually pivoted towards becoming a prominent player in the Aviation industry. .

anika is a fighter, dreamer, visionary, and go-getter.While words fall short to describe her resilient character, her achievements speak for themselves. The profusion of her qualities seems immeasurable but she never fails to exhibit them in the best possible manner. She dreamt of becoming a pilot at a very young age, but the restrictions from her family did not fall in her favor. Despite the challenges of being a girl in an orthodox Indian family, she was determined to gain her name in the industry.

June ‘22

Her journey began at the age of 17 when she started working in an aviation company while simultaneously completing college. After gaining initial experience in the industry, she moved to the UK to pursue MBA and began working for another aviation company. Given such an opportunity, she had her eyes set on the prize - irrespective of what may come her way. She moved back to India after finishing her MBA but her life took an unexpected turn when she learned that she had developed cancer at the age of 22. Being the true fighter she is, she fought Cancer with every will in her body, mind, and soul and came back stronger.

With this freshly gained insight, Reddy reckoned the only solution was to expand JetSetGo by serving in-house aircraft and eliminate outhouse services to ensure impeccable delivery. Another challenge unveiled itself when she realized that the cost of the plane and chartering it was much higher than the collective cost of renting them; the major market players renting their airships weren’t trying to incur their purchasing cost but only the operation cost. Since the purchasing cost was so high and their competitors were asking quite a nominal price for their airplanes, it was almost impossible to be profitable.

Being the fighter Kanika is, it took her no time to resolve this problem. She figured that these players were not profitable, as they were practically running their businesses at a loss After her win from Cancer, she routed her way back by only incurring the operating cost. Their next strategy involved them moving to Aircraft management where only to her career and decided to start her enterprise in the aviation industry. the planes belonged to the industrialist She was able to construct JetSetGo, but everything else was theirs. “We never We never her own company, with the initial increased the prices increased the prices but the utilization. After detailing the science of logo analysis in his debut book ‘Million Dollar Logo’, renowned logo guru, graphologist, and wristwatch analyst SudhirKove is launching his second book, ‘Reverberation of a Timepiece’, which delves into how a simple time measurement device can impact |your subconscious mind.

June ‘22

In a way, then, while showing you time, your wristwatch also affects how your time will be spent. “From the shape of your watch to its color, material, which hand you wear it on, and what it means to give or receive as a gift...this book covers unique concepts that stem from logic, science, traditional knowledge, and psychology. 50

With this waste reuse model, leftover coffee grounds will be used to extract nutrients and be used as skincare, manure, and fertilizer.

June ‘22

As the world’s second-most sought-after commodity after oil, coffee is a staggering $100 billion industry – meaning there’s a multi-step bean-to-cup process at the global scale. India-based artisanal coffee brand Craft Coffee has launched a sustainable initiative Go For Grounds, which is an effort to encourage greater recycling and reduce waste. Based on a waste reuse model, the campaign will extract nutrients from leftover coffee grounds after brewing and repurpose them for skincare, manure production, cultivation and other uses.

QBIK

SATRANGI An ode to colour and Rajasthan

June ‘22

56

The barren Thar desert is a jewel in India’s crown, this arid land has been the source of many colorful and vibrant craft techniques. This season once again, Qbik draws inspiration from this state, taking the ethos of their collection Rang forward, in their newest presentation “Satrangi”. A composition of multi-hued ensembles inspired by the kaleidoscopic crafts landscape of Rajasthan. The previous collection which was a mix between bandhani and Benarsi fabrics has gotten an update in the form of the interplay of heat setting techniques against tie-dye and leheriya. The leheriya in Rajasthan denotes the myriad wave patterns seen in the desert, steeped in bright hues, it sees representation across the state. This technique has seen the quintessential Qbik treatment by being paired with heat setting creating structural multi-hued silhouettes. The biggest inspiration for the use of vibrant colors is the bright, almost technicolor clothes of the people of the state. Pictured against the bright blue walls of Jodhpur, or women peeking through jharokhas of Havelis, brightly clad and always smiling. Keeping the collection easy to wear and fussfree in novel color combinations, decorated with intricate-dainty hand embroideries in fusion-like silhouettes that can be a part of your summer celebrations. Lines and curves are all inspired by the dunes, fluid and ever-changing, juxtaposed against the architectural inspiration of Jantar Mantar.

June ‘22

Our signature silhouettes of shararas or ghararas are paired with kurtas. Fitted paneled blouses with staple concept sarees are showcased through the unique fall of the fabric. The brand adds an element of fun to menswear with a bright Nehru jackets and kurtas with pants and salwars. The collection champions summer brocades that almost look hand-painted in jaal and chevron patterns, adding to the overall mood of celebrating color. The Benarsi silk is treated with tie-dye and further given the heatsetting technique of pleating for control and highly elevates the fall of the fabric. The pieces are paired with organza and chiffon dupattas to bring a sheer element to the look. Menswear sees ample usage of Tussar Cotton, Monga Silk, and the same summer brocades that are used in womenswear. Multicolor beads, sequins, and dapka in light gold and light silver, kutdana, and pearls add the much-needed glamour in terms of surface embellishments on floral motifs contrasted against geometric, intricate, and highly detailed hand embroideries. Chevron and jaal are highlighted to bring out the essence of the brocades further. This season Qbik hopes to bring the beauty of the multi-colored hues of Rajasthan to your celebrations, championing color, joy, and vibrancy through Satrangi!

CHANCHAL GUPTA

D

r. Chanchal Gupta, a prominent dentist specializing in braces, had always dreamt of becoming a doctor with the sole purpose of helping those in need. While her goal remained constant, her ulterior motive of teaching and educating others eventually surfaced.

Primarily Dr. Gupta set her heart and soul to becoming an Orthodontist so she completed her education along with various informative courses like Lingual Orthodontics, Flash aligners, Soft Tissue Certified Laser Dentist, and New York University Certified Dentist that truly portrayed her commendable zeal to achieve highly in her field.

June ‘22

As she completed her academic responsibilities as an Orthodontist, spreading this attained knowledge became her very next goal. Since her ardor for teaching and educating others surfaced in her life, she began working on her next project - an online dental education platform. Odont Academy of Learning, accessible as a website and application, is a platform curated to provide an insight to aspiring students on how to join Army Dental Corp, a three-day of Intensive Hands-On course on Endodontic Rotary, and a two-day Online CBCT Hands-On Course and Laser Proficiency Course. Moreover, this platform allows the patients/ students to book their appointments for various consultations/programs conducted by the academy. As a founder of OAL, she fulfills her duties as an ace leader by focusing on team-building and rewarding her associates for their diligence. According to Dr. Gupta, it is essential to reward the teachers involved with the academy based on their work pattern over the period of one year to encourage them to serve better. The inspiration to curate this platform came from the rising unemployment of her fellow Orthodontists due to Covid. The pandemic impacted them specifically leading to the loss of jobs because they were given lesser importance and their interaction with patients was severely hindered. Dr. Gupta derived the perfect solution by putting together an online platform to resolve the issues given at hand. However, her biggest challenge occurred when her company was often perceived as a spam company but she was able to overcome it with the brightest fire in her heart. She conducted various webinars and online events to win the trust of people and succeeded to do so.

When asked what impact she wanted to make in the medical field, Chanchal said, “I want to influence the masses and hence I came up with my own academy plans where we not only train the medical/dental fraternity but also train our patients and bring about an awareness about the technology that is driven in the medical field. In our academy, we also help the dental/medical fraternity develop practical skills and incorporate technology into their practice. I also would like to use a lens of education and innovation to engage”. Alongside the emerging platform (OAL), she has also deepened her roots in writing evolving her into an established and researched author. She has written two books, namely, Anterio-Posterior Cephalometric Analysis published by Lambert Publication to her credit, and Blood Transfusion by Rivers Publisher both can be found on Amazon among other E-commerce websites. Dr. Gupta has not only been recognized for her contribution to the field of Orthodentristry but has been awarded multiple awards; India Inspirational Women’s Award and the Women’s Empowerment Achievement Award in 2020 followed by Rashtriya Gaurav Top 30 Award as the Woman Of The Year in 2021. As for her future, she aims to educate every individual about the basics of dental and medical care. Furthermore, she believes that knowledge knows no bounds and it can’t ever be limited. So, Dr. Chanchal’s prime target is to enhance her own knowledge in the vastness of the same field also stands by the tagline of her academy ‘ANYBODY WHO KEEPS LEARNING STAYS YOUNG’. “When You Attach Passion To Your Dreams, You Get Yourself Closer, To Achieve It.”

SUNY MISRA Now a revered author, Mr. Suny Misra first started writing poems and short stories, in both Bengali and English at a very tender age. Novels and the world of fiction actually caught his attention a while later and he hasn’t looked back ever since. When interviewed on his journey as a writer, Mr. Suny looked back on all of it and revealed, “I had been writing since childhood, but at that

stage it was only limited to poetry and short stories. My works had been published in my school and college magazines. But I got into substantial writing only in 2020 as I made my first nationwide appearance by winning a National Short Story Competition organised by Story mirror.

June ‘22

After the lockdowns started, people began to lose their jobs or were under constant anxiety of losing their jobs. Depression had engulfed a major portion of the population. This miserable condition of people had touched my heart. Witnessing this anxious state of people was what got me into writing my first novel, Shadows in the Night.” The central idea to all his writing is to break the stereotypical belief system. In the garb of millions of engulfing tales, Mr Misra claims that his writings pose some questions to the readers against certain prejudices prevalent in society. The clarity and lucidness in his writing style has become is what makes his stories most popular among all readers.

Mr Suny Misra’s debut novel, Shadows in the Night was launched. In 2021, his second novel, Murder of the Roses was published. While Mr. Suny’s first novel is about how psychologically ill people should be taken as a part of our society, not boycotted because oftheir sickness; whereas his second novel is a crime thriller that points out that all seemingly ill-mannered people are not always the culprit. Deceivingly, how a person who is soft spoken and polite can be the actual criminal. In the same year, both the novels became bestsellers on Amazon and have brought him several accolades from around the world.

When asked what keeps him going, Suny Misra concluded that the love that readers bestow upon his books, the fact that they understand what I intended to convey between the lines, the impression that I am able to drive my ideas home are what makes me proud.” For him, the journey of a novel is just like a life’s journey - from its beginning to the end.

G-TOWN AWARDS

E

ven after receiving an ideal teacher award, the best teacher award for three consecutive years and being named the best principle at her former school since its inception, Mrs. Tanuja Dhar’s most significant accomplishment is when individuals and students remember her for her support and understanding as a teacher. She believes there’s no greater profession than that of an Educator for the growth of the society; Afterall, the teachers shape the caliber, character and future of an individual. Tanuja Dhar is a retired school principal and an experienced teacher with notable feathers in her cap. She has contributed a lot in her field especially during the Covid-19 induced pandemic where the whole Education System faced several challenges. In these difficult times, Tanuja Dhar decided that no student shall suffer because of any financial and emotional restraint whatsoever. When interviewed, Mrs. Tanuja confessed “I made sure that no student’s academics were harmed, and I tutored them to get good grades on their final and board tests. I used to go to my student’s place in city and villages both whenever and wherever I was needed to provide emotional support and education, assuring their continued development. My students love me most and our bonding, our understanding is most beautiful and precious thing of my life.”

Amongst the masses, it’s people like her that bring about the necessary change in the system. She also aspires to start her career as a career -enhancement-coach because there’s a large gap between the academics and employment that comes after the former. MYTHBUSTING Nutrition Myths That Are Rampant in India

The internet is rife with misinformation, and it can be really difficult (sometimes impossible) to tell what is fact and what is a myth. Myths that were previously passed through word-of-mouth now spread like wildfire through social media, blogs, and even established media. There are many reasons for this – like a 24-hour news cycle, research studies that are both long and difficult to read, and journalists/bloggers/celebrities looking for their next viral hit. As a result, information often gets published without being verified (or is ignored). Myprotein India has looked hard at the evidence and discussed 3 nutrition myths below that seem to be rampant in India and refuse to die.

MYTH

Lemon Water is a Quick Fix for Fat Loss

FACT While there’s nothing harmful about lemon and water, there’s nothing magical about it as well. There are no compounds in that special mixture of regular fruit and water that triggers a biochemical reaction which starts to melt our adipose tissue.

June ‘22

So don’t expect any miracle fat loss outcomes from lemon water! While you will see weight loss (not fat loss) if lemon water is the only thing (or one of the few things) you’re having for a few days, that is simply because of a severe calorie restriction as well as water loss. You’ll put these kilos back as soon as you start eating normally.

THE TRUTH Lemons are just fruits, and fruits are healthy. Lemon juice won’t contribute substantially to your micro-nutrient intake, but it also doesn’t contain very many calories. Lemon juice contains small amounts of beneficial micronutrients and phytochemicals, but it’s unclear if, among all fruits, lemons are uniquely valuable.

Most importantly for fat loss, lemon water has no unique, proven weight-loss benefit. So don’t expect any miracle fat loss outcomes from lemon water. Sustained fat loss comes from a balanced diet and active lifestyle.

MYTH Chickpea (Channa) is a Rich Source of Protein

FACT

Every 1g of chickpea protein comes with 3g of carbohydrates.

A simple Google search (“chickpea cooked calories”) will reveal that 100g of this legume contains 9g of protein and 27g of carbohydrates i.e. there’s 3x carbs to the amount of protein in it. So, while there’s certainly a reasonable amount of protein content in it, it does not qualify as a rich source of protein as we are getting a lot more carbohydrates along with it.

Chickpea can certainly be used to supplement one’s protein intake or to replace sources of carbohydrate with poorer protein content, say rice. And for vegetarians with limited options, it can be used to increase the amount of protein intake.

THE TRUTH Chickpea is not a primary source of protein as every 1g of chickpea protein comes with 3g of carbohydrates. Do not rely on it (or similar legumes) as your primary source of protein. A diet rich in these legumes is a high-carbohydrate diet – not a high-protein one. June ‘22

MYTH Taking Whey is Like Taking Steroids

FACT Whey is a part of milk – if we ‘chop’ milk into two, we will get whey and cheese essentially. Whey has been shown to be a completely safe and high-quality source of protein. It is highly processed (the process is needed to extract the whey from the milk) and care needs to be taken to ensure your whey protein comes from high-quality sources. Whey protein appears to increase muscle protein synthesis to a high degree. And it does not do any damage to the liver or kidneys. The exception is if there is already pre-existing damage to those organs where it can worsen the issue. For people with kidney or liver issues, it is recommended to consult your physician before starting to use whey. For those without any such issues, it is a great source of protein to supplement our diet with, and not just for those who lift weights or actively exercise.

THE TRUTH Whey is a natural part of milk and is shown to be both safe and effective when used by healthy individuals.

How do doctors diagnose Sleep Apnea?

Recommendations for testing patients who have excessive daytime sleepiness and 2 out of 3 of the following: - Habitual snoring - Witnessed apnea - Gasping or choking during sleep - Diagnosed hypertension Many evaluation tools and questionnaires like ESS, Berlin, Stop-bang questionnaires are not typically used for diagnostic testing since they are inaccurate and not superior to good history and physical examination. Diagnosis is confirmed with sleep study or polysomnography (PSG). This is a single non-invasive test which can be done at home or in lab/hospital. The diagnosis of sleep apnea is based upon the presence or absence of related symptoms as well as the frequency of absence of respiratory events during sleep (i.e., apneas, hypopnea and RERAs (respiratory effort related arousals)).

1. Behavior modifications 2. Weight loss and exercise 3. Sleep positions 4. Alcohol avoidance 5. Medications: the drugs that might stimulate respiratory drive directly (e.g., theophylline) or indirectly (e.g., acetazolamide), drugs that reduce upper airway collapsibility (e.g., desipramine), antimuscarinics (e.g., oxybutynin) nor adrenergic agents (e.g., atomoxetine) 6. Alternative therapies like oral appliances (e.g., mandibular advancement devices, tongue retaining devices maybe offered to patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea. 7. Upper airway surgery 8. Positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP/ BIPAP) & Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) involves maintenance of a positive pharyngeal transmural pressure so that the intraluminal pressure exceeds the surrounding pressure.
