I

t is no secret that 2020 was a year of major ups and downs. It left us with a rift feeling caused by loss of health, peace, and finance. Insecurity and fearfulness became a part of our daily lives. However, it is truly commendable how people dealt with the situations. Now, it is a new beginning to a year - 2021. I hope that 2021 is the year of multiplication for all of us; multiplication of love, finances, health, and relationship. It is important to keep our focus on our mental health, and how we can keep it healthy. To do this, we should take out quality time to spend with our loved ones or with ourselves to keep ourself satisfied and happy. The lockdown taught us one very important thing - the materialistic things which attract our focus are useless. One should have a deep relationship with Almighty to satisfy our soul, so that we are content and happy. My point isn’t that we must sacrifice our desires and become saints, but that we should live a balanced life so that the feeling of insecurity and emptiness should be replaced by happiness and content. Q: You are ‘Mrs. India, First Runner-Up,’ 2020. What was going through your mind when your name was announced on the stage as one of the winners? What led you to participate in the event and how did you prepare for the same? I would be lying if I said I wasn’t expecting it. However, in spite of the expectation, I had butterflies in my stomach and my heart was thumping like a horse. The moment my name was announced I nearly missed a heartbeat.

Q: How did your modeling journey start? How old were you when you accepted your first modeling assignment? I was always interested in acting. The universe made it happen and I got in alliance with Arvind Gaur Sir and made a place in his ASMITA group. One day, I was performing in a theatre play where I was appreciated by the viewers as well as the Mr. Shavya Sharma of Dream Merchant. That’s when I got my first modeling assignment. I was 40 when I got this opportunity.

Q: Tell us about your most memorable moment as an actress? Who are the actors/people/artists that you want to work with in the future? It was when I was performing at Muktdara auditorium In CP. The play was Mandir by Munshi Prem Chand. It was a very emotionally written play so the audience started crying and said I was able to do justice to the character. I want to work with the people who do justice with their work.

Q: How was your family and friend’s reaction when you told them you want to pursue modeling/acting as a career? Mix reaction, I would say. Many motivated me vocally and heartily, and many only vocally. However, my immediate family and friends acted like strong pillars and kept pushing me whenever it was needed. 8

Q: Where do you plan to go from here? Is acting in the movies a part of your plan? If yes, what kind of movies would you want to be a part of? I never decide about my life. I’m an unplanned & spiritual person. I know that no matter what God gives me, I am determined to do it well. Yes, a good script can surely convince me to do the movie. And I am more inclined towards true stories and events.

Q: What do you think is the most important thing to remember as an actor? What is that one quality that you’d advise aspiring actors to inculcate in their personality? Be honest. Be Real & Do the homework. Always stay true to your work and never compromise with your freedom.

How has theatre contributed to enhancing your talent as an actress? Do you think in the era of multiplexes and big screens, the significance of theatre has deteriorated? In every way. The way I act, the way I think, my entire personality, is because of theatre. We cannot turn back time, nobody can, but time is a wizard it keeps rotating everything. Things get out of fashion then again it’s in the trend in better force than before. Even when things aren’t “in fashion”, they are still appreciated and looked up to by many people. There are factors that influence generations. So PURE (Theatre, Handmade products, and Maa ke haath ka khaana ) can never get extinct.

Q: You were also awarded by G-Town Society Magazine as the Best Actress for your performance in the popular play called ‘Prem Chand – Mandir,’ directed by Arvind Gaur. How was the feeling? Very good.........very proud. Q: Which character did you enjoy playing the most in your career? Do you also wish to play a certain character that you still haven’t? Tell us about it? As an actor, you can’t rate your work. You can only learn from your each piece of work. And Piku movie very close to my heart.

A captivating fusion of prose and poetry

The mystique in the title It’s Not Me, is explained at the very outset, as the author states the book as being a divine outpouring rather than a deliberate act of ‘writing’. She believes that it wasn’t her who wrote it but something more powerful that drove her toward that end. This power occurred as a result of an extraordinary and inexplicable divine experience that transported her into an altogether altered and euphoric state of consciousness. 34

loating in blissful ecstasy of being one with the divine, the author starts writing everything that flows through the ink of her pen. And as if, miraculously, what takes shape is a book she never ever intended to write. The book is extraordinary, to say the least, from the very beginning where a sage, who happens to have passed away eons ago, grants the narrator a wish, anything of her choosing. And what does she choose? Not material happiness, but a plethora of experiences that would ultimately lead to enlightenment. Not in a flash but as a journey towards a specific end. Following an arranged marriage, once again, ordained by divine forces, the central female figure in the narrative finds herself lost and utterly desolate. The man is not one she would have chosen, and this is a reality that must be faced by the young bride. Besides her marriage what ensues are manifold experiences, some she would have never imagined or thought could be possible. They are real, surreal and she is exposed to a gamut of thoughts on a wide array of subjects. What one reads about, for instance, is a satirical take on motherhood (have them, because if you don’t, you’ll have one more reason to complain), childbirth (the most uniquely horrifying experience a woman goes through in her lifetime), peppered with light hearted humour and wit. The reader encounters in this entire trajectory, more serious subjects like terrorism, unconventionally from the perspective of a terrorist. Along with a search for the ever-elusive truth what we also read about are miracles like the narrator

attending a creative workshop and being commissioned right there to write a book! The narrative also delves into the author’s personal hell in terms of past life memories that create a devastating and gaping void in her present-day existence as a result of distressing memories from the past. In terms of past life experiences, she has travelled through it all via meditations and regressions into the past: heartbreak, the life of a queen, a renowned priest and being just a nobody. This is reflected vividly in a poem based on personal experiences titled ‘The Somebody and the Nobody’. The book has been slotted under the genre of fiction despite being inspired largely by real life experiences. The author states implicitly that the reason for doing so is simply because the person who wrote the book does not resonate in the least with the person she is now. The author is honest in her claims to not being a writer. The book is an accident, as she likes to put it. She is thoroughly intrigued by where the future of the book lies. Will a book written by one who doesn’t claim to be a writer at all receive fame as was prophesised to her, or will it simply disintegrate and fade away into a far- away memory of a reader like millions before. The author is convinced throughout that the ‘voice’ that speaks to her constantly is truly the voice of God. She knows in her heart that the destiny of the book will answer a pertinent question: Is her life ’unremarkable’ with this book being truly nothing more than a ‘writer’s imagination’, or is it truly governed by a larger force, where the author was chosen as a ‘divine conduit’ to share an important message with humanity through this compelling narrative. andeep Kumar Rana, an established writer having penned films of repute like Yaad Rakhenge Aap (2005) – a Limca Book of Records listed film and Auzaar (2016) that’s screened at the prestigious Third Eye Asian Film Festival, has dedicated his debut book - The Hungry Cow - to his English teacher, Mrs. Kamini Soni. She taught him from class VI to VIII, using special initiatives like class library, a newspaper in education, and story writing. Her classes were full of interactive sessions and homework checking. As a result of this solid foundation in English, Sandeep went on to study English Literature and later worked for The Times of India. The Hungry Cow’s story revolves around eleven-year-old Raju who aspires to become a veterinary doctor because in every cow he sees his Gaura maan - the cow his father Gopala has reared. When he sees any cow limping/bleeding, he feels that it is Gaura maan who is hurt, so he aspires to treat them all. Alas, the good work has to begin early and at home. As Gaura maan begins to yield less milk, Gopala maltreats her, like no feed, no vaccines. Gaura maan’s condition worsens when she feeds herself from stinking garbage bins. A cancer that can be prevented

CERVICAL CANCER AND ITS PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES

ervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide; with India contributing to onefourth of the global cases. India sees about 1,22,844 cases of cervical cancer every year and accounts for one-third of the global cancer deaths. These figures are alarming because unlike most other cancers, we have effective screening methods to detect women who are likely to develop cancer in the future and detect cancer at its early stage. This apart, we do have vaccinations against the Human Papilloma Virus which has been clearly identified as the causative agent in more than 99 percent of cervical cancers. Inaccessibility of the screening modalities in the rural areas, the cost of the HPV vaccine and a lack of knowledge amongst the general population result in India continuing to see a high number of new cases of cervical cancer till date. Despite effective screening strategies, only 7% of the general population get their Pap smears regularly and a far few are aware of a preventive vaccine! Regular screening with Pap smear and HPV DNA for high risk strains and universal vaccination of young girls have resulted in a drastic reduction in the cases of cervical cancer in the West. With better implementation of screening programs in the rural areas, availability of HPV vaccines to all young girls and regular education of women on the importance of regular screening and vaccination, India is sure to see a drastic reduction in the burden of cervical cancer. How is cervical cancer different from the rest of the cancers?

Unlike most other cancers, we know what causes cervical cancer and that has been a major breakthrough! Human papilloma virus causes most of the cancers and it takes 15-20 years from contracting the infection to developing cancer. This gives us a large window to identify women at high risk for developing cancer who can be subjected to a close surveillance. The HPV vaccine available in India protects against HPV 16 and 18, the two strains that are responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancers. In addition it does confer some cross immunity with the other high risk types. If given to all girls prior to the onset of sexual activity, it can result in a drastic reduction of the number of cervical cancers in the years to come. Human Papilloma virus (HPV) HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. Most sexually active women contract the infection at some point in their lives with or without symptoms. There are more than 100 types of HPV, of which about 14 strains are the high risk types responsible for cancer. Most infections in women clear without any intervention within 2 years. However, in a few, the high risk strains of the virus persist in the body beyond 2 years, get integrated with the cells and progress to cervical cancer. Regular screening is the key for early detection of cervical cancer! Cervical cancer screening Pap Smear What is a Pap smear? A Pap test looks for changes in the cells of the cervix that might become January 2021

cancer if not appropriately treated How is it done? It’s done as an outpatient procedure in the doctors clinic, where a metal or plastic instrument is inserted to widen the vagina and visualise the mouth of the uterus (cervix). A few cells are taken from the cervix for microscopic examination. Is it painful? Although one may feel a slight discomfort similar to that felt during a vaginal examination, A Pap test is not a painful procedure. Who should be doing a Pap smear? All women between 21-65 years should get regular Pap smears done 39

every 3 years. If a woman is screened with HPV DNA along with a Pap smear after 25 years( preferred over Pap test alone); the screening interval can be increased to 5 years.
