D

ecember is my favorite month of the year. It’s a month filled with festivities, excitement, gratefulness, and exuberance that sway along with a truly merry Christmas and a joyous new year. Another reason this very month stands out is that it is the last month of the year. During this month, we look over the year and reminisce while we prepare ourselves for the surprises and experiences the next year will bring. 2020 brought us quite a lot of challenges and changes that we weren’t quite ready for - the pandemic, wildfires, lockdown, crashing economies, and starvation due to unemployment; it was no less than a life-and-death situation for many. As it came as a big surprise, it was quite a challenge to deal with all that was happening in the world. But I can proudly say that we handled the year with pure strength and resilience. And now that 2021 is upon us, I hope that we all welcome it hopefully and positively because, in my opinion, this year will bring immeasurable happiness and opportunities for us. 2020 will never be forgotten because whether we like it or not, it brought a new ‘normal’ to our lives which includes working from home, social distancing, and face masks - things that didn’t quite exist prior to the pandemic. It is true that people were initially filled with fear, panic, and worry because of the virus but it is also undeniable that we coped with it pretty well eventually. Now that we are comfortable with our new normal, our lives have become wholesome again and we should be extremely grateful for that. Now with this new normal and a heart filled with excitement, we bid this year a farewell and welcome the next year. I look forward to welcoming 2021, and I hope you do too. Also if you haven’t already, thank the Almighty for your life and for the fact that you are healthy enough to be able to see the next year because we have lost many of us this year to this crisis. Be grateful and be kind! I hope you will enjoy reading this edition, as we bring exciting stories, like Bonding with your newborn, relationship, Essential Defence Moves for women, Grandmillenial Winter Trends. We are delighted to honor Dr. Sangeeta Ahuja on cover page. She is a successful Interior Designer and with her extreme talent, she has filled immense happiness in many lives. Our readers will definitely encourage with her journey. Happy reading….your valuable feedback is highly appreciated. Please email @ editor.gtown@gmail.com

A platform formulated by world class visionaries who have common vision as MENTORx women has. G-Town Society secured the opportunity to bring to you, an exclusive interview with Dr. Sangeeta Ahuja, where she talks about her journey to success. Q1. You are such a successful Interior Designer; would you like to tell us about your journey? To me, I think, the best part of this journey is the surprise and wonder that comes along the way. During my initial years, I always reminded myself to practically implement my inner creative genius through the medium that I am passionate about and truly enjoy the journey. This surely gave me the best moments of my life. Learning & practicing Oddishi dance for years, and playing basketball gave me the sense of belongingness to my inner self. Q2. You must receive multiple projects every now and then; it must bring your clients immense joy when you deliver successfully. Would you like to share such an experience? Of course delivering the projects is a very remarkable moment. It’s really a mix of different emotions; pride, achievement, and setting a benchmark for myself so I’m pushed to do even better in the next project. Honestly, it’s about converting dreams into reality. Each project that I pick comes with a new experience. It’s our job to make sure that the results leave an impact on our clients who are expecting to change their life around by changing the way their homes look and feel. So we try to make it as memorable as possible. Luckily enough, many of my clients have now become a part of Urban Interiors family.

11

December 2020

Q3. In order to be where you are currently, you must have faced numerous challenges. What were your most difficult challenges and how did you overcome them? I think, being tired is a luxury that a working woman cannot afford which is why I try my best to keep it together; maintain a juggling act including working, looking after my family and my home, and making others’ homes too. And don’t even get me started about the never-ending phone calls. If i had to define success, it would be that success is about making the best choices we can and accepting them. Q4. You have built your own company – Urban Interiors – from scratch which is truly commendable. Could you tell our readers a little bit about Urban Interiors? Urban interiors, top notch residential and bespoke commercial projects, is a brand that emphasizes on bringing life to empty spaces, for happy homes, clients and life. It works on the concepts to create timeless and understated elegance while fusing the east with west resulting in a piece of art. Q5. We live in a male-dominant society where being a woman entrepreneur is quite challenging. How do you manage to create your place in the industry? Your motivations get the promotion. I am a self-believer and I avoid troubling myself with situations that make me feel like I don’t deserve it. The situation of male dominant society and me being a woman entrepreneur simply doesn’t co-exist. It’s because that’s not my area of growth, I believe in mutual growth. This is how we all will make the society worth living in on humanitarian beliefs. Q.6 According to you, what are the five Fundamental principles that are required to achieve success in one’s business? My top fundamentals to achieve success are positivity, patience, disciplines, persistence, and visualization. Once you’re onto all of these, considering yourself walking right path to success.

3bO

Live viral filtration results have shown 90% live viral filtration in 3bO masks compared to 56% filtration in highly ranked chemically coated masks.

India’s first Face mask that provides triboelectric antiviral and antibacterial protection

3

bO is India’s first face mask that uses CeNSTech™ - a patented technology of CeNS, a Govt of India, Dept of Science & Technology Lab, which provides antiviral and antibacterial protection. Designed and developed by the scientists atCeNS(The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences), 3bO is the only mask based on triboelectricity. The mask is being manufactured and marketed by Camellia Clothing, a three decade old clothing company based in Bangalore, under an exclusive global license from CeNS. 18

3bO masks uses the concept of Triboelectricity to give the masks enhanced Electrostatic Filtration, and aid Electrostatic Viral deactivation, over and above the mechanical filtration. Live viral filtration results have shown 90% live viral filtration in 3bO masks compared to 56% filtration in highly ranked chemically coated masks. The inner layers of 3bO mask, continuously generate a triboelectric charge, through the natural airflow of breath and speech. This charge, while being completely harmless to the wearer, offers extra protection in two unique ways:

Electrostatic Filtration: Triboelectricity generated in the mask acts as an electric wall that provides advanced antimicrobial filtration, over and above the mechanical filtration offered by the multiple fabric layers in the 3bO mask. Antiviral Triboelectric Charge: Studies have shown that triboelectricity and electroceutical fabrics can be used effectively to destabilize viruses. Contact with an electroceutical fabric for one minute leads to a significant reduction in the electrokinetic property of the viral particles. Triboelectricity helps in the deactivation of virusDecember 2020

es in a significant way, without any harm to the wearer of the mask. “3bO was founded amidst pandemic. The idea was to equip people with a scientifically crafted healthcare protective tool. At Camellia we were actively scanning Technologies which would bring both Science and comfort together for protecting us against this Covid-19 virus. This came true when we signed an exclusive licence to manufacture a technologically advanced, and awesomely comfortable mask developed by scientists at CeNS and market it globally. We then worked on it with our experience in the fashion industry to make this ‘daily wearable’ of the new normal into a beautiful article worthy of any ensemble”, saysMr. Harish Mittal, Managing Director, Camellia Clothing Ltd, which gave birth to “3bO the Deltoid Face Mask” “The 3BO facemask works on the basic ideas from physics textbooks on triboelectricity. This self-powered facemask is made from the layers of tribopositive and tribonegative fabrics; when rubbed against each other, they generate electricity. The mask acts as a double-wall 19

electrical fence. Camellia Clothing helped us translate this idea into a product realizable by the end-user; we believe this collaborative journey will help us fight the pandemic. The unique deltoid-shaped mask provides a snug-fit to any faces, and it is highly breathable, washable, and helps one wear comfortably for a longer duration”, says Prof. G. U. Kulkarni, Director in Charge, CeNS While the Deltoid Shape of mask and its feather light weight of mere 5.6 grams, is engineered toprovide high breathabilityand continuous comfort, in addition to providing the ultimate level of protection. The unique Deltoid shape of the mask is designed keeping ergonomic prin-

ciples in mind. It provides ample space in front of the mouth ensuring zero speech distortion. It also provides a snug fit leaving practically no room for leakage while breathing thus ensuring zero fogging on one’s glasses. A Pathway for the catering and F&B Industry for Reviving the Business in 2021 Authored by: Chef Karann Talwar, Managing Director and the Gastronome Chef, Kitchen Kraft Luxury Catering, New Delhi

I

t hasn’t been an easy run for the catering and food & beverage industry in India recently. The pandemic outbreak and the resultant nationwide lockdown had left many restaurants and hotels in dire straits, leading them to cut staff, close operations in some cities or complete shut down of businesses. But now the as the world is moving towards the new normal, industries are putting brick by brick again. However, no one can predict how events will unfold in the foreseeable future. As a result, our sensibilities are moving towards and causing major changes in how the catering and food industry is expected to function. Industry stakeholders are, hence, gearing up to revive the business in 2021. So, let’s look at a few of the points representing how the catering and F&B sector is embracing the business in the coming yearGoing forward with Cloud Kitchen In times where uncertainty looms large over the future of the dining business, the cloud kitchen seems the most feasible way forward for restaurants in 2021, especially as government guidelines also encourage takeaways over dining in at restaurants. To be sure, cloud kitchens have been popular since before the virus, but the pandemic has reinforced them now as a safe and viable option to revive the business in the coming year. As turning to cloud kitchen is an immediate solution to mitigate the fall in dine-in sales. Moreover, deliver-

ing safe food, as per FSSAI norms, is going to be the key differentiating factor in the future for businesses to prosper. Technological Modifications Technological changes have now become vital. In an attempt to bring the catering and F&B business at the forefront, innovation and planning are key. Companies and firms in the F&B and hospitality sectors are training their staff to be prepared for new and unanticipated challenges such as, Contactless Dine-in, QR code – enabled digital menus, wearing a head covering masks, and improvised hygiene and sanitation practices that are about to become the tenets of the food industry. Accepting these trends underlines the importance of efficiency in the catering and food & beverage industry. Re-examine Risk Assessment The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated carrying out risk assessments at food production facilities and eating outlets and this will be carried out for a long time. The assessment will be carried out 35

on ingredients, raw materials used, packaging and the related processes. Risk assessment includes mainly two elements: possibility of occurrence and severity of the occurrence. Several food processors and restauranteurs have also brought in place mechanisms meant to handle emergency situations like natural disasters and pandemics like the current, ongoing one. Consumers trust better SOPs Owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, one can no longer be callous and careless about good hygiene. In a bid to revive, the restaurant and catering companies will need to spend adequate time in redefining their training and food handling protocols for employees. There should be a detailed focus on sanitization in spaces dedicated to food preparation, kitchens and the serving zones. As consumers will trust only those brands now that have better standard operating procedures (SOPs) and mechanisms to manage hygiene and other regulations. Because even after this pandemic is resolved, the diners would prefer a place where they know that

sanitation levels are up to the mark. More focus on Immunity boosting food The whole world woke up to the necessity of having a good immunity, which may not have crossed our minds earlier, but in the wake of Coronavirus scare, it did. According to a report, titled Top Five Global Trends that Will Shape the Food Industry in 2021, almost 31% of consumers are purchasing more items with health benefits, and 50% indicated a preference for foods and beverages that contain nourishing ingredients for strengthening immunity. Therefore, Immunity-boosting foods will play a significant role in the coming year. Conclusion The global pandemic has posed unexpected challenges and drastically changed consumer perceptions of the world, influencing the way we eat, drink and connect with one another. But every adversity has a silver lining to it. With the right strategy and planned pathway, catering and F&B companies can revive the business and emerge stronger than before. December 2020

Relationship- Is it a Candy or a Brandy?? By Aalok Sood

Harmonious Relationship (s), needed by all, understood only by some, executed well by a very few!! True or False- Challenge SELF and seek deep within, to find the answer!

Introduction

R

elationship (s), are being sought almost by each one of us, pretext of which is either not understood at all, or least understood. A relationship happens just for nothing for reasons hidden deep within us, even if they could be your ‘Past Life Carry Forward!” The point at issue is, ‘Are the relationships ‘harmonious’ or ‘dis-harmonious’; they make a sweet sound or result in making noises and that too, very often? Who is responsible for their being harmonious or dis-harmonious, of course, the two or three, or more who are in to them!! I am, for the purpose of this article, am restricting self to the personal relationships.First of all, let me segregate the readers in to two categories- ‘One’ who are yet single and looking for a relationship. ‘Second’ ones are those who are already into a relationship. Each of the two kinds of readers may glean their 42

respective relevant portions of the content from this article. Now, the basics which each one needs to understand is that the reason of ‘Relationships’ could be based out of ‘SELF needs, wants, and desires’. “Obviously so”, would many of my readers retort. I agree. There is in fact nothing wrong if the relationships are originating out of our needs, wants, and desires. The catch is that the two or three in a relationship have to have some common reasons. A different reason by the two seeking a relationship would end it all in disaster. As some of them say, “Different Attract!” Well, I for one would, for a successful relationship would vote for, “Similars would go a longer way!” Reasons of Relationship (s) If the reasons of being in a relationship are different for different individuals, then we have to understand in depth the different individuals and theirs as well our own reasons for seeking a relationship. The aim is to work there-after in providing requisite space to each other based on the deep understanding of the reasons of relationship.

I know you guys are perplexed and are probing yourself with finding those reasons which could lead to our getting in to a relationship. Let me attempt them with all my wisdom gained from the experience of my life. The reasons are alphabetical in order and not based on any other criterion. Brainy (B) - These individuals are looking for the ‘Matter in the Brain’ of the partner. It is the intelligence, analysis, reasoning, smartness, and deep resonating conversations which matter the most to build and keep a relationship. Emotional (E) - We might be looking for only an emotional connection. We may be needing a shoulder to rest our heads on or a good ear to listen us out. This reason could exist in a standalone mode too. This means that the individuals looking for this reason may not seek anything else from the prospective partner. Hunters (H) - This reason is highly individualistic and social in nature. These individuals are hunters in true spirit. They literally hunt. The man looks for a ‘beautiful sassy babe on his arms’ and the woman is looking for ‘a hunk and smart man’ in her arms. The reasons work more for the ‘Public’ rather for their own-selves alone. The reason can exist strongly as a stand-alone mode. Material (M) - Some of us are only looking at financial and other material support from a relationship. This could

December 2020

come with one or two additional reasons as well. This is possible to exist in a stand-alone mode. Physical (P) - Now, these are the individuals who are looking for only the physical aspects of a relationship, as in, fierce physicality in the relationship. This trait can exist strongly as a stand-alone mode. Spiritual (S) - Some individuals are looking for a companion for self-growth and development along with their contributions to the society around them. This reason could exist in duality, both in a stand-alone mode or a combination of (E), (M), and (P). Long Term (L) -Even this variety exists while some of the individuals are looking for partners. Frankly, it is not clear to me even till date that that (Long Term Relationship) can happen without defining the six of the above needs, wants, and desires. Thus, different combinations of wants, needs, and desires (Reasons) of a relationship could be (E), (E-P), (M-P), (MH), (S-B), (B-P), (B-E-P), ……… Of course, the order of the want, need, or desire; if there are more than one reasons for the relationship, also matters. Read and re-read the above types to get as much of clarity as you can and understand them once for all. What type are you seeking a relationship in a partner and what type is the prospective partner needs to be clearly defined and understood in the courtship period. It will stand us in good stead to run great relationships. After all who wants sore relationships? The only challenge is ‘Please do not hide your reason for the relationship. Initially, everyone is ‘sweet, sweet, sweet; it is later that the real self, starts blooming for real and by that time the reel is over. Which Type are you? My recommendation is that we must know our types out of the ones enumerated above before we embark on to the journey of trying to find what the others are. It is pertinent to mention here-in that our understanding of self to understand our reason of a relationship is a must. The more the clarity about our needs, wants, and desires out of a relationship, the better would be the understanding about others. Take your time to find out about yourself and then communicate well with the perspective partner. Speak clearly before embarking on to the ‘Journey of a Relationship’. Ask questions, both to self and others for a smooth run in the relationship. It goes without saying that more the clarity of the reason of the relationship between the two partners, lesser turbulences would be encountered during the 43

course of the relationship. Minor detours are easier to manage if the clarity on reasons of a relationship is clear to both the partners before they set out on ‘The Voyage of a Relationship’. Let me elaborate it with three examples: Example 1: Say, the man’s want is (SpiritualBrainy) and the woman’s want is (Emotional-Physical); how long do you think the relationship is going to go? Also, as per your opinion, will the relationship be smooth going or full of turbulences? Example 2: Say, the man’s need is (Physical-Emotional-Hunter-Material) and that of the woman is (Brainy-Spiritual-Physical); what would be the future of such a relationship? Example 3: Say, the man’s need is (Physical-Material) and that of the woman is (Brainy-Emotional); do you think that the relationship will last long if the two involved individuals are not having a deep understanding of each other? Clarity in Communication during the Relationship (s) Once the relationship ‘takes-off ’, remember the reason each one of has for the relationship. As you move forward in a relationship, keep reviewing your reason (s) of the relationship on a ‘monthly mode’ to begin with and after a year’s to-

getherness, this could be done on a quarterly basis. First, be sure of why you stepped in to a relationship for. Make a commitment of the same to self and your partner. Give your best to stay on course. In case of ‘changes happening within self ’, steer away from the ‘new needs, wants and desires’; mull over, and modify them to stay on the initial chosen course. Now, if nothing else is making you stay on course the chosen path, converse with your partner. Get on with a ‘mutual discussion’, no arguments please. Speak of ‘what is wrong’ and never of ‘who is wrong!’ Arrive at a mutually modified course of action and it is strongly felt that re-draw the lines to stay on the original chosen path. It can happen that there is nothing that can be done to stay on the initial chosen path. Having given space to both self and the partner, it may emerge that you two wish to take a different course, here-after. Part if need be, but make sure that you do it on mutual grounds. Be clear in your conversation and express with clarity. The only thing that one needs to keep in mind is to come clean during such conversations and do not keep any of the ‘emotional strings attached’. As they say, “carry forward no guilt!’ It is tough to say so, and yet ‘time is a big healer.’ There is no point dragging and flogging a dead horse.

Conclusion

Relationships need to be strong with your own self first, before you entre in to any relationship with anyone. Personal relations and any other professional one too, needs to be harmonious. Difference in opinions could generate ‘a discussion’ not ‘an argument’. However, till the time one is not clear with what and why you need out of a relationship, no relationship will ever thrive in to longevity. A deep understanding, therefore, of the various reasons to get in to a relationship, as enumerated in the article above, is the need of the hour in today’s dynamic and fast moving environment around us. Remember that any relationship can be ‘as sweet as a candy or as bitter as a brandy’ (you may like the taste as much as you can, of either). The challenge lies within us and needs to be exercised with caution because it is not only you who wants something from a relationship. If you want others to understand, adjust, and modify themselves to what you want in life then you also need to reciprocate and change yourself to what your partner wants from his or her life.

Essential

Self-Defence

Moves Women Should Learn For

Their Safety

By Aparna Rajawat, Founder, Pink Belt Mission Traditionally, every Indian Household has taught girls to be well mannered, softspoken and sheltered them with an understanding of being protected by their family. While she is raised chaperoned, are we reflecting on the thought of helping her learn – ‘The essential Self Defense moves’? Below mentioned are essential self-defence moves that every woman should learn to take the ownership of her own safety, to protect her and fight in situations where she is unsafe. Neck Hold

I

f an attacker grabs hold of your neck from the front, be calm spread your legs apart to take a wide stance, raise both of your arms straight up. Then slowly twist your body to one-side which also helps loosen the grip. Then with all your force and strength hit your elbows on the attacker’s arms on the upper side of the elbows, which then results in losing grip and releasing your neck. While doing this, naturally the attacker’s body will bend forward, allowing you to hit the attacker’s neck/face with your elbows to defend yourself and escape.

44

One Hand Catch Move 1

I

f an attacker grabs hold of one of your hands, the first and foremost thing you should do is look at it to spot the weakest link of escape, i.e. the section around the thumb and other fingers while circling your hand. This weak link is called as the ‘door’. Usually, when someone holds your hand from the front trying to retrain your, the ‘door’ is generally at the upper part of your hand, all you need to do is apply sudden force, with a swift movement to release your arm by trying to touch your ear, which helps release your hand and gives you a chance to escape.

December 2020

One Hand Catch Move 2

I

n cases where the move 1 does not work, here you have another option. Here if an attacker has grabbed one of your hands, all you need to do is twist your body towards the opposite side. So if your right hand is grabbed, twist to the left and vice versa. Then spread your legs apart and with your knees on the sides squat lower, while going down push your elbow on to the lower part of the attacker’s arm. Due to this pressure and your body going lower, the attacker’s arm and wrist cannot flip in that manner, resulting in letting go on your hand.

Holding From The Back

I

f an attacker grabs you from behind, do not panic all you need to do is spread your legs apart and squat lower and bend forward, then from between your legs grab the attacker’s leg tightly and pull forward upwards, which results in the attacker losing balance and falling backwards. One the attacker is on the ground, you can run and escape.

Grabbing Collar & Chest

W

hen an attacker grabs your collar or your upper chest area, then immediately grab the attacker’s hand tightly with your right hand, then twist it towards your right while also twisting your entire body in that direction. Ensure to hold the hand tightly as possible, which then makes the attacker bend forward and towards the side naturally since the hand is locked. Then with your left hand push hard on the attacker’s shoulder which leads to attacker losing balance and falling. One attacker is on knees or on the ground you can take your chance to escape.

One Hand Catch (Cross)

I

f the attacker is holding your hand with their opposite hand, is a cross manner then naturally the position of the ‘door’ changes. In this manner, the door is usually on the opposite side of the attacker. So all you need to do here is grab your palm of your hand which is being held by your other hand, then with all your strength with a jerk motion apply pressure on the ‘door’ to release, which then results in the attacker losing grip and letting go of your hand.

45

Purse Snatching

U

sually, thieves snatch bags & purse by running past you or while on a bike. Which gives them an excellent chance to escape as before you even realize and chase them, they have far gone. Whenever face with such an attack the best thing you can do here is to grab your purse and put your entire body w e i g h t on it and sit down. When you do this with all your strength you break the thief ’s movement to escape, leading they losing balance or letting go of your purse as they can get caught.

How to Stay Healthy, Fit and Safe During

the Winter Season By Preeti Seth

Nutritionist and Cosmetologist and the founder of Pachouli Wellness Clinic

T

he Winter season can be busy and exciting. With so many events like family dinners, holiday parties, and the preparation and planning for gift giving, we have plenty of distractions to keep us from focusing on our health and taking care of ourselves as we would normally. Diet and Exercise Tips While the winter season might increase the risk for weather-related injury, the biggest risk to our overall health is a lack of attention to diet and exercise routines. During the holidays, we find ourselves so busy finalizing travel plans, finishing up with tasks at work, buying and wrapping gifts and crossing everything off of our checklists that we forget to prioritize our healthy habits. 1. Calm Your Carb Cravings The cold season tends to ignite our cravings for more carbs and comfort foods. Why? After you consume these delicious treats, your serotonin levels rise, making your brain think you are happier. And as the day wears on, your carb

cravings get stronger and stronger. To counter this, try eating a protein-packed breakfast to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. If by the time the afternoon rolls around you’re still craving sweets or carbs, be sure to have low-fat and healthy snacks on hand. However, if you can, finding a way to increase your serotonin levels without food is the best way to beat the carb cravings. 2. Add Omega 3 Fatty Acids Omega 3 fatty acids are a healthy type of fat that are naturally found in many food types including fish, plant seeds and nuts. Omega 3 fatty acids are great for reducing joint pain and stiffness as they are a natural anti-inflammatory. Studies have also shown that omega 3 fatty acids help lower levels of depression, which people commonly feel during the shorter days of winter. 3. Eat More Fiber Soluble fiber found in apples, oats and nuts is an important way to decrease inflammation and boost immune system function. Soluble fiber also helps reduce cholesterol levels in the body and December 2020

aids in weight loss and protection against diabetes. This is an especially important winter health tip for seniors who require a high-fiber diet to protect their digestive systems. 4.Workout at Home If you have no desire to head outdoors for your workout, then never fear. There are plenty of resources online that supply fun workout videos and exercises. These resources offer a variety of workouts including yoga, strength training, aerobics and other body-weight exercises. Check out Pinterest for tons of great resources so you can get fit in the comfort of your own living room. 5.Cook With Spices Onions, garlic, ginger and cilantro are the perfect items to add flavor to your dishes. Not only do they make food taste great, but they’re also shown to help improve immune function. Turmeric is a spice traditionally used in Chinese and Indian medicine. Its main active ingredient is called curcumin, which gives curry its yellow color. This spice helps to combat a number of conditions including inflammation and heart disease, and it acts as a powerful antioxidant. 6.Eat More Green and Orange Vegetables Sticking primarily to vegetables and fruits that are dark green and orange is important in ensuring you’re getting healthy nutrients, sugars and fats. Spinach, kale, Swiss chard, squash, carrots and oranges are all delicious during the winter. There are plenty of recipes available to incorporate these items into your regular winter diet. 7. Plan Your Exercises a Week in Advance Try to stick to a weekly exercise plan so you don’t put off your regular exercise activities. On Sunday night, write down your exercise schedule for the next seven days. Choose your exact workout routines, activities or exercises for each day and how long they will be. Knowing what you’re scheduled to do each day ahead of time makes it easier to stick to. If you can, line up your workout schedule with a friend to encourage each other to stick with it and stay motivated.

s pure passion would be, no bait is enough to tempt me out of my love for nature and tigers in particular. Having done several Wildlife safaris to Ranthambore (Rajasthan), my excitement and enthusiasm only seem to grow with every visit, said Varun Khullar He started this journey, almost 12 years back, as a normal wildlife sanctuary visitor, experiencing a safari ride into the jungle, just like anyone else would do. But the love he has developed for wildlife from that one moment has ever since beckoned him back into its arms. After every safari, there are always new stories to share and wonderful experiences to take back. It is an incredible experience watching tigers, sambar deer, spotted deer, birds, and other wildlife in their natural habitat roaming freely without 50

any inhibitions. With his interest in Tigers specifically, he felt that he somehow wish to encourage the ‘Save the Tiger’ moment, by sharing the beauty of our national animal through capturing them in their royalty and galore. He felt that every picture that he capture should send out a message to my followers about saving the endangered species. It’s high time for us to realize that Tigers should be saved for the future generations to see them in real life too. With an interest in wildlife and especially big cats, his passion persuaded him to buy a good DSLR camera with a telephoto lens and he started capturing the wildlife in its abundance. With no professional course in photography, but experience in the field, made him a good wildlife photographer. People started appreciating his photography and concepts. Initially, before COVID, he has somehow managed to take out time once in 2-3 months for wildlife getaways like Ranthambore National Park, Jim Corbett National Park, and Jaipur to capture the beautiful tigers and leop51

ards. “It was difficult to balance my passion for wildlife photography with my corporate life, and hence I started capturing birds. Over time I have developed a liking for bird photography and after capturing birds in and around Gurugram, Delhi NCR, I have built a strong interest in Birds of the Indian subcontinent. People have started calling me a ‘Nature & wildlife Lover’, said Varun Khullar On weekends he try to visit nature parks like Sultanpur National Park, Bhondsi Nature Park, Basai Wetlands, Rajiv Gandhi Park, and Biodiversity Park to capture the birds around. Due to the pandemic, things changed and all the wildlife parks were shut down but the wildlife nurtured. The last few months have been nothing less than a few golden months for nature and wildlife. He had some of the best shots of birds in these COVID times. He had been able to capture at least 20-22 different species of birds in and around my home that could have never happened before. Bonding with Your

newborn Dr. Shalini Chico

Consultant- Neonatology and Paediatrics , Fortis La Femme Hospital, Richmond Road, Bangalore

Many parents have this expectation that they will instantly fall in love with their baby at the first sight or touch. But sometimes it doesn’t happen in an instant. That doesn’t mean you are a failure as a parent. There are several ways you can build this bond of a lifetime.

The 7 B’s of bonding

1.

Birth bonding: The concept of skin to skin contact immediately after your baby is born is not just a fad. It has been scientifically proven to help to stabilize the baby’s heart rate and temperature, aid in early establishment of breastfeeding and successful lactation for a longer time, baby is less likely to cry, and yes, the most rewarding of it all, is 54

the feel of this bundle of joy you have carried for 9 months, against your skin, bliss beyond words ;it is a start of a lifelong bond. If there is no contraindication and both you and your baby are healthy, you could request your doctor if you could give skin to skin right after birth. This can also continue into the days and weeks following your delivery, especially for babies who are preterm or low birth weight, a practice commonly known as kangaroo mother care.

2.

Breastfeeding: Is not a choice, it’s a responsibility. Start breastfeeding as soon as possible, within 30 minutes of a normal delivery. Breastfeed on demand, and unless medically indicated, nothing apart from breast milk is required for your baby in the first 6 months, not even water. It is not just about nutrition—when your little one snuggles up against you to nurse, she hears your heartbeat, smells your scent, and is reassured by skin-to-skin contact. December 2020

3.

Babywearing: That is, carrying baby in a sling or wrap. Results in lesser crying, emotional development, and ideal for breastfeeding. However it is critical to observe that baby’s neck is well supported and breathing is not obstructed. Respond your baby’s cries, its fine to pick her up and hold her close when she cries especially in the first few months.

4.

Bedding: Proper swaddling can ensure better sleep. For both you and baby! Sleep when your baby sleeps, visitors and socialising are secondary. A well-rested mother is less stressed, and that benefits 55

her baby the most. Give her a massage. The benefits of baby massage are staggering.

5.

Beware of multiple inputs!: Turn off any unnecessary inputs that may interfere with your natural maternal instincts to nurture your baby. Be it interfering relatives who’ve “been there, done that”(well to be fair, those tricks might have worked on their baby but this baby is YOURS), or the multiple and sometimes conflicting inputs from the internet. You are the best judge, at times of panic, take a deep breath, stay calm, trust yourself, listen to your heart. And no, do not turn to googling at the drop of a hat!

6. 7.

Believe in her cues: Over time, you will be able to identify baby’s crying cues, be it for hunger, sleep, discomfort, or just the need to be held. Balance and Boundaries: It’s true that your baby is picking up on the bond his parents share. Spend some time in the day, where you can unwind with your partner in any way, just spend some “we –time”.And put your phone away. Right now, your family and colleagues will understand if it takes you a few hours to respond to a text. Take advantage by giving all that extra time to your little one. December 2020

Mauritiu live and work in the Covid secure Indian Ocean paradise long-term visa launched to meet demand from digital nomads, remote workers and retirees

M

auritius, the Indian Ocean paradise, has launched a new long-stay visa to meet the growing demand from international visitors looking to relocate to the Covid-secure island for work, leisure or retirement. The country’s new Premium Visa is valid for one year, with an option to renew, and is open to those who want to relocate to allow them to work remotely, have a long-term second home on the islands or to retire here in 2020, 2021 and beyond. Launched to meet international demand The Republic of Mauritius government’s new visa offer is in response to strong international demand to relocate to this Indian Ocean country. Thanks to Mauritius’ widely-praised handling of the global pandemic and implementation of one of the world’s most rigorous national arrival testing provisions, the country is now seen as a perfect destination for long-term relocation as it provides a Covid-secure environment in conjunction with economic, political and legal stability. The collective response by the Mauritius government, and the country as a whole, to Covid

56

means that the country provides an opportunity for long-stay visitors to escape their domestic lockdown restrictions and relocate with the minimum of effort to live and work on Covid-secure islands. The new Premium Visa is expected to attract thousands of individuals and families who will invest in the country for the long term, particularly those whose jobs allow them to work remotely and those looking for their ideal retirement location. The Premium Visa provides the opportunity for individuals and families to relocate to a country that delivers work-life balance through a developed and advanced infrastructure, making it an ideal location for those looking to maximise their business productivity and leisure time. Ranked first in Africa in the last World Bank’s Doing Business Report, the country provides unparalleled support to work remotely including a transparent financial ecosystem, state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure and a reliable ICT connectivity with high capacity undersea fiberoptic network (SAFE and LION) linking Africa to Asia and Europe via Middle East.

us is open Mauritius also offers a diverse selection of long stay rental accommodation options ranging from serviced apartments to beach-side homes. Residents are also permitted to purchase property including luxury villas, penthouses, apartments and duplexes under specific investment programmes. An arrival concierge service helping new residents find homes, cars, banking services and telecoms will be in place and Premium Visa holders will also no longer need to leave the country at the end of their visa to renew their temporary visitor status, which will help keep the island more Covid-secure for the longer term. Strict Covid-secure protocols to keep Mauritius safe In order to keep the country Covid-secure, Mauritius has implemented one of the world’s most rigorous heath monitoring regimes. The condition of entry requirements mean that all visitors are required to follow health measures. All new arrivals to the island are required to undergo a 14-day quarantine period combined with a pre-departure PCR test, arrival test and follow up tests on 7 and 14 days. Returning Mauritians, diaspora, short and longterm visitors are all asked to follow the same procedures to help keep Mauritius Covid-secure. Some of Mauritius’ finest hotels are allocated as arrival facilities. Health protocols are regularly reviewed in line with the country’s requirements and the status of the global pandemic. International business and tourist destination Mauritius is a well-known hub for banking, financial and legal services with infrastructure which has developed to support the needs of global business and a large international professional services community. Mauritius already provides world-class connectivity, banking, office space and other business facilities meaning that Premium Visa holders can seamlessly transfer their business operations to the country. Mauritius provides a fully operational Indian Ocean base in a time zone ideal for working

remotely with Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East and is a perfect base for remote workers and digital nomads. Mauritius also remains open to tourists who are looking for a shorter term Covid-secure holiday destination. Mauritius is best known to international visitors who are looking for an authentic Indian Ocean paradise. Tourism is focused around beautiful beaches, coral reefs, stunning scenery and marine environment as well as leisure activities such as golf, hikes and trails, water sports and scuba diving. Medical tourism, conferences, weddings and honeymoons have all been at the heart of tourism in Mauritius for decades. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant that some of these groups of short-term visitors are understandably unable to meet Mauritius’ world-leading 14-day quarantine requirements and Mauritius looks forward to welcoming back these tourists when they are ready to travel again. Mauritius has long been a favourite of retirees, primarily from South Africa, France, Germany, United Kingdom and other European countries, looking for a second home that provides world-class leisure facilities, homes and activities that only a larger island destination can provide. The Premium Visa provides this group of visitors the long-term security to relocate and maximise their retirement in a Covid-secure destination. Launch of the Premium Visa The Premium Visa was launched at the direction of the Mauritian Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth and led by Minister of Finance, Renganaden Padayachy, who said: “Mauritius is open. Visitors are welcome to our country who are looking for a long term safe and secure second home. On arrival we ask all visitors to comply with our strict health requirements and in return we offer visitors a Covid-secure destination with world-class business and leisure infrastructure to help facilitate remote working and retirement plans.” Central to the new Premium Visa service is the private sector as well as individual citizens. An arrival concierge service helping new residents find homes, cars, banking services and telecoms will be in place and run by the business community under the Mauritius Now brand. Individual citizens will benefit from increased job opportunities and economic activity. Citizens are also being encouraged to act as ‘Welcome Ambassadors’ showing the country’s new guests around their new home and showing the very best of Mauritius. New residents will be invited to events to meet each other and the communities in which they live. The Chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), Nilen Vencadasmy stated: “Mauritius is welcoming long term visitors who are looking to live and work remotely in a Covid secure location. The Mauritius tourism sector has developed innovative packages to welcome visitors as well as facilitate the work of digital nomads. Our island is Covid-safe and with its modern infrastructure is an ideal spot for them to work remotely and to be part of our wider community”.

In order to qualify for the Premium Visa visitors must provide evidence of their long stay plans and must have adequate travel and health insurance for the initial period of stay. The visitor’s main place of business and source of income should be outside Mauritius. They will not be allowed to enter the Mauritius Labour Market. Is Yoga More Effective Than Pilates

For Weight

Loss?

By Bhavani Pinisetti,

Yoga & Pilates Expert & Founder, Laxmana Yoga & Pilates

W

ith the focus shifting on having a healthier lifestyle, a significant number of people are looking out for options to reach their fitness goals either with the help of a single form of workout or a combination of two or more forms. Yoga and Pilates are now among the popular options of workouts opted by people across different age groups. Though both these forms may have similarities, they have significant differences and could be helpful either individually or as a combination, depending on the medical condition of the person and the purpose behind opting for a workout. Similarities between Yoga and Pilates The breath- which is the source of life, is one of the main aspects to be focussed on in both, yoga and Pilates. Focus on bal60

December 2020

ance, the improvement of physical and mental stamina, healing, lengthening of muscles, flexibility are the other common aspects. Both the forms can be practiced across people of different age groups, though there could be limitations with people diagnosed with medical ailments. Key differences between Yoga and Pilates The origin of both the forms of exercises gives us an insight of the purpose behind its development and hence, the differences. While the oldest documented mention of yoga dates back to ancient Indian texts and the word ‘yoga’ itself implies ‘union’, union of the mind, body and soul, Pilates was developed in the early 20th century in order to alleviate ill health. Yoga focuses on the holistic wellbeing of an individual. Pilates mainly focuses on individual muscles, primarily the core muscles which are often considered to be important for physical stability of an individual. Mechanism of action on the human body Yoga is known to have shown significant results in the improvement of the overall heath of an individual. Along with the various postures, breathing techniques and meditation, the effects of yoga are not limited to the physical aspect but extend to spiritual, emotional and the psychological aspects as well. Pilates, on the other hand helps by working on targeted muscles, coupled with mindful breathing and repeated movements. Benefits of yoga and Pilates in weight loss A healthy mind and a healthy body make a healthy individual. As an experienced practitioner and teacher of yoga and Pilates, I would recommend a combination of both-yoga and Pilates for weight loss, along with a nutritious diet. Certain series of postures, for example, the ones that form the sequence for the surya namaskar are beneficial, if practised regularly. Also, different styles of yoga, like the Ashtanga Vinayasa yoga, aid in significant and overall weight loss. Pranayama is also of great significance in healing the human mind and body and thereby, maintain a healthy weight. Pilates could help strengthening the core muscles and get rid of the stubborn and unhealthy fat. It could also help to tone the muscles. A carefully designed combination of both-yoga and Pilates, would help one reap maximum benefits, cumulatively. A trained teacher and proper techniques play an important role in learning and practising any form of exercise, the right way and thus having a productive and desirable effect. So it is safe to conclude that Yoga & Pilates are equally effective for weight loss and a combination of two can enable one to achieve their desired goals if the weight loss journey is also backed with guided and well informed nutrition plan.
