Donatella Versace in her Milan studio. The purchase of her family’s fashion house by an American company, Michael Kors, challenges the industry’s European assumptions.

S

eptember 24th, 2018 marks an important day in the world of Fashion. America has its first global luxury group. Michael Kors purchases the Italian brand ‘Versace’ for $2.1 billion and renames it as Capri Holdings, after the Italian island. This was a very important step into the ranks of fashion conglomerates, a rarefied world defined by Kering and LVMH Möet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. While experts in the industry are chattering about what the deal might or might not do for growth and for taking advantage of the Asian market, in the announcement by John D. Idol, chief executive of Kors, he called it a “milestone.” He was right, not only in terms of Kors but also in terms of the fashion and luxury industry itself. The implications of this goes beyond the financial aspect or the root of luxury identity and the international fashion world, and has the potential to be as disruptive and formative as any revenue system. They speak on behalf of national pride and to the history of luxury’s essence. This is the reason why, even as analysts ponder over the implications in the stock market, consumers of the luxury brand have taken to owner Donatella Versace’s Instagram feed to voice their fears, with comments such as: “Donatella why would you sell Versace? it’s an iconic ITALIAN brand. I’m a proud Italian, why would you sell it to an American brand?”

The chief executive of Kors, John D. Idol, said he saw unexpected parallels between the two companies, even in their personalities.

Luxury fashion has made national identity as an integral part of its calling card in comparison to other global industries. It is deeply rooted in the ateliers of Europe, where couture and craft are regarded as part of the heritage. Every industry has its own creation myth and tags like “Made in Italy” and “Made in France” are part of its invaluable proposition. This is one of the reasons why there was a lot of soul searching and hand wringing in Italy about heritage brands being bought by the French during the post-recession wave of consolidation. (LVMH owns Pucci, Fendi, Berluti, Loro Piana and Bulgari while Kering owns Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Brioni.) In this context, American fashion is even more of a vulgarian and wannabe. This is the birthplace of sportswear and a country in the industry that once sent departmental store employees to spy on the couture shows so that retail emporiums could make first copies of the clothes. Instead of being burdened with tradition, each generation gets to start anew and find its own elation. For years, New York Fashion Week(NYFW) has been the last stop of the New York-London-Milan-Paris circuit. It has been consistently disregarded as a mere emulation of the trends that come out of Europe. Even when it proved this wrong and jumped to the front of the queue in 1998, it suffered from the adverse effects of commercialisation. Whenever an American designer had to boost their creative credentials, they always felt the need to make their mark in Paris. For instance, not long ago, the designers Proenza Schouler and Rodarte left their base in New York to show in France. Neither loyalty nor longevity appeased. Marc Jacobs’s 16 years as creative director of Louis Vuitton and the stint Michael Kors himself did at Celine, which was a highly successful tenure from 1997 to 2004 which was overshadowed by the work of the designers who followed, didn’t serve to legitimise American fashion. America simply wasn’t a culture of historic brands or haute couture. Even if they say Kors was an International Corporation, to most people the company is by definition, American. Whenever questions like - “Why the United States didn’t have its own luxury group and why a few such attempts have failed?” popped up, part of the answer could have been financial but the former statement was unfortunately a hindrance for America to place their name in the industry. Its onymous founder was after all, a star for many seasons on ‘Project Runway’ and the brand is cast in the image of the owner and now, that aspirant, who last year acquired the British accessories house Jimmy Choo, is over one of the remaining independent Italian houses, known for its baroque influences and Pop culture symbolisms. Around the acquisition, there was talk that Kering dismissed Versace as overvalued, which Makde people speculate that Kors was just ravenous for a luxury Italian name. Some people even said that the family was looking to get out, and that the label would be Americanised in the coming years. Mr. Idol strongly rejected any suggestion that Ms. Versace would leave the brand after the amount of time they had spent in building the brand. In a statement via The New York Times on Sept. 25, 2018, Mr. Idol said that he has observed “numerous unexpected parallels between the two companies, not just in growth opportunities and digital invention, but in personality which is harder to test.” All of which is to say that if the deal works and the projectionshe has made prove true — and Versace does reach $2 billion in sales over the next few years, Choo $1 billion and Kors $5 billion, it could not only rebalance the Kor’s portfolio, but also break some longstanding conventions within the Fashion Industry itself.

Athleisure is the new casual : Kick starting a newtrendwithSneakers | Nikitha Baiju

baiju.10825@stu.pearlacademy.com thleisure is redefining the world of fashion today, traversing the space between the world of street and high fashion. Not long ago, sneakers were only reserved to be used by gym enthusiast at the gym, but today, the humble sneakers is fashion biggest game changer. It is no longer declassified or considered masculine and improper to be a sneaker head. They’ve initiated a new wave in which sporty and comfortable clothes are no longer seen as dressing down. In fact, Sneakers are on the up and more women are wearing them to work, off duty, and some celebrities don’t shy away from wearing them at the red carpet. Sneakers have gone from being a part of your schoolyard PE to glamorous add ons to your outfits with luxury brands like - Chanel coming out with tweed trainers, Dior with its bejewelled slip ons, Versace with their boldly printed flat-forms, Balenciaga with their sock like runners, and many more. There is an increasing number of designers and celebrities collaborating with performance-wear brands like Rihanna and Puma, JW Anderson and Converse, Raf Simons and Adidas, BTS and Converse, Puma and the latest being Reebok. This is helping in maintaining an endless cycle of micro-trends within the fashion industry. In a statement via Vogue, Cassie Smart, accessories points out “how the silhouette of sneakers can change and how you can adapt to them. They have seen an almost 200 per cent rise in the sale of sneakers in the past 18 months alone.” While the white C-line sneakers or minimalist sneakers with toned down clothing might be your cue ; or you’d like to dress up your Balenciaga’s infamous Triple S Trainers classic denim - there is one trend taking the sneaker world by storm - “dad sneakers.” They are called so because they look like something your father has probably worn in the 80’s and are dominating fashion houses. Balenciaga’s Triple S trainers take their name from the triple stacked sole, and have been flying off shelves for awhile now. The Triple S don’t even look remotely like any other shoe and people are intrigued and curious for their big silhouette. With inclusive sizing and styles for sneakers, what was once perceived as exercise footwear is now being used by women of all ages and profession. Women have been emphasising on empowerment and are able to do so because of the advent of sneakers. Once you wear sneakers, Fenty X Puma getting back into heels is very hard.

ver the years, H&M has been infamous for dropping a highly-anticipated designer collab, selling out within hours of opening doors. Some of its most successful and known ones include Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 which was the Swedish giant’s first-designer collab – and most recently, with brands such as Balmain in 2015, Kenzo in 2016 and Erdem in 2017. This year, the fast-fashion house was back with a collection just in time for the party season with a designer known for his maximalist approach in design– Jeremy Scott for Moschino. The MOSCHINO [tv] H&M collection was set to drop online and in select stores worldwide on November 8. The collection was high on extravagant prints, metallics and signature Moschino elements at a mere fraction of the cost. To get a buzz for the launch of this collection on social media, H&M has also launched special giphy stickers on IG (Instagram) Stories, Snapchat and iMessenger along with animated emblems and logos from the collection. The news came out in April 2018, which created a lot of excitement amongst people who want to own a few pieces from the Italian luxury fashion house. Surprisingly, even though the collection was a little over the top for the average Indian consumer, the collection was high on demand, garnering interests of a lot of fashion

bloggers, enthusiasts and youngster across the country, with garments and accessories flying off of racks in no time. The price of the collection ranged from INR 799 to INR 30,000. SUBCULTURES EXIST!!! New micro-trends are constantly emerging within small communities through blogs and memes. Have a look at one of the most popular trends that you may or may not be aware of. | Nikitha Baiju

baiju.10825@stu.pearlacademy.com

I

t seems like subcultures are pretty much dead in today’s world and all we have left are niche aesthetics. Take the internet Tumblr trends for example. New micro-trends are constantly emerging within small communities through blogs and memes, and some of them come to life on fashion items. However silly it may sound, there are people who actually wear these trends. Although most of these trends theoretically have an “expiration date”, you can still wear whatever you like. After all, Alternative fashion is all about accepting the differences and breaking the norms. Many of these trends are still alive and unchanged. Let’s have a look at the latest, lesser known trends and gone through the ones that have emerged since the late ’90s.

1.Meme-core

All those large scale prints of emojis, cats, and junk food worn “ironically” you’ve seen all over the internet and on almost all fashion sites? Well, there’s a name for that – it’s Meme-core. We’ve also seen it on Moschino runways, with their Sponge-bob and McDonalds inspired collections, instead of elegant gowns. This trend is mostly worn by fashion bloggers and teenagers and also celebrities. An example is Katy Perry with her fancy Chanel-inspired McDonalds purse. As most modern trends, cutesters emerged from hipsters in London. Cutesters are creative souls who wear jumpers with cartoon characters, emoji tattoos, and (for guys) well-kept beards. They refuse to live the rebellious lifestyles of drinking and drugs like most other subcultures. Looks like nothing is radical and new anymore, the world has grown tired of it. Such as hipsters, they don’t have a “defining” look – you know it when you see it. Unlike hipsters, cutesters are genuinely friendly and prefer fun over looking cool. A cutester outfit could include a Hello Kitty shirt, denim skirt, knee-highs, glasses and white Dr. Martens.

2. Norm-core Just when fashion was running out of trends – a nontrend emerged: Norm-core. Normcore is a unisex fashion trend characterized by unpretentious, normal-looking clothing. The style includes simple outfits and the message that no one is special. The icons of the movement are celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld and Steve Jobs. On the other hand, maybe women are just tired of wearing heels and buying new clothes every season, so they want something neutral and long-lasting. The key is to look comfortable and effortless. If it looks like you tried too hard to put that outfit together – you’re doing something wrong. Normcore wear includes casual items; such as mom jeans, tees, sporty motifs, white New Balances, neutrals, relaxed fits, zip-up hoodies, and pleated pants. Unisex styles are very popular. For example, a cute maxi dress with aviators and Adidas superstars. This is not to mean that they are unfashionable people who wear whatever comes to hand, but that they consciously choose clothes that are practical and undistinguished – except perhaps for a visible label to impart prestige.

3. Witch-House

Witch House is a trend that emerged around 2010 and was about the aesthetics as much as the music (a blend of hip-hop, industrial, goth, and precursor to trap music). Witch house is an occult-themed dark electronic music microgenre and visual aesthetic that emerged in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The fashion included extremely baggy, hooded sweatshirts and V-neck tees with inverted crosses and triangles over skinny jeans. Hoods, silver jewellery (such as necklaces with ankhs and pentagrams), and small tattoos with Egyptian or “okkvlt” (occult) symbols were also popular. You can expect ver-styled outfits close to costumes: people in animal masks, guys with home-made scythes, girls who look like fairies and witches, all accompanied

by innumerable tattoos, piercings and body painting. Take for an example the goth/synth pop musician Mr.Kitty – he’s wearing a long oversized hoodie with stacked on bracelets, and of course, ankh necklace. Just like in Mos ique, people are dressed in black but there seems to be a lot more creativity. Genders blend as some guys sport androgynous looks, wearing shoe platforms or high-heels. Girls with short haircut and mean look on their face are squatting in baggy Adidas tracksuits. Faces are often covered, resembling mobster look.

4. Sea-punk

Sea-punk is a mix of scene, EDM, and hipster subcultures. It became mainstream thanks to pop singers Azealia Banks and Rihanna. The style originated in 2011 as a trend on Tumblr. The music is a mix of modern electronic music, with influences from the 90s. This trend continues into the fashion, which generally consists of aquatic colours, such as various shades of blue and green. It contains many symbols from the 90s, such as yin yangs and smiley faces. Sea-punks often wear brightly dyed mermaid hair in shades of blue, teal, and mint. Frequently used fashions include sea shells jewelry, nautical motifs, tie dye, dolphins, mermaid leggings, Wayfarers, and holographic shell bags. For a darker sea-punk look,

people wear a mermaid skeleton dress, a sheer top with sequinned sea shells covering the breasts and the pastel hair tied up in braids or buns and dreadlocks. People experiment with makeup such as pastel lips, glitter all over the face, rhinestones, and bindis.

mirror Latino gang styles, including khaki Dickies work pants, white T-shirts and colored bandanas. While some skateboarders have long and messy hair, skate punks usually have short hair, often shaved into a buzzcut, and wear little jewellery.

Skate punk is both a skater subculture and a subgenre of punk rock music. By 2012, many scene kids abandoned the look and went for a more toned down skate punk/hardcore look. That style includes wife beaters, beanies, plain hoodies, Vans, tapered jeans, combat boots and stretched earlobes. Short hair styles were the norm, such as crew cut and indie Hitler youth haircuts. Others became sneaker-

A typical Their outfit usually includes a black bellshaped skirt or dress, with a corset to accentuate the shape of the dress and a tailored black, frilly, buttoned up blouse. They frequently wear fashion wigs in combination with other headwear such as hair bows or a bonnet, with typical occcult prints and accessories. Lolita is seen as a reaction against stifling Japanese society, in which young people are pressured to strictly adhere to gender roles and the expectations and responsibilities. Secondly, that it is an escape to a fantasy world, in which an ideal identity can be created that would not be acceptable in daily life.
