Winter in the Poconos Elmer Hertz Acknowledged The Board of Directors takes this opportunity to acknowledge the many years of service that Elmer spent volunteering to make Tanglwood the community it is today. Elmer was elected to the Board for two three-year terms and served with distinction as Second Vice President. Elmer served on the Public Works and Building Code Committees. He shared his expertise in recommending the purchase of our maintenance vehicles, including the garbage truck, which had to be retrofitted. He also served as Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. Elmer is one of Tanglwood’s veterans, having served combat duty as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam. Elmer is a true outdoorsman who enjoys boating and fishing. He and his wife, Clementine, supported and participated in many of the Tanglwood social activities such as the Pot Luck Suppers. They are close to their sons and grandchildren who all reside in the community. On behalf of the Board and the Staff we wish Elmer good health and thank him for his faithful service to the community.

COVID-19 remains with us, preventing our normal activities. We are all suffering from what is known as cabin fever. How much television can you watch, how many naps can you take – we all long for the time when we can get out of the house.

Our staff is also looking forward to Spring. We are planning to repave several roads and a new building will be added to our Maintenance area. This will be a very busy Spring.

Our By-Laws and Legal committees will be making what we hope will be the final push to gather the necessary votes to protect the future of our community. If you have not voted on the Restrictive covenants, please pick up a ballot at the Chalet.

We closed out one of the most stressful years in the community. The CV 19 Virus had a profound impact on the community and the way we conduct business. We look forward to better days ahead. I want to acknowledge the volunteers on the Board, committees and staff who worked through these difficult times. I want to thank all the members that donated food during our holiday food drive.

I want to thank the members that complied with the Recreational Vehicle Exterior Storage Regulation as noted in Section [212] of the Consolidated Rules. To date [76] permits were issued. The deadline to secure a permit was November 14, 2020.

There has been a development related to the Pocono Lake Front Development. A lawsuit was filed to appeal the decision of the Board of Supervisors of Palmyra Township for granting a Conditional Use to the plan submitted by the developer.

The case was scheduled to be heard at the Pike County Court of Common Pleas on December 14, 2020. It is my understanding that the case has been withdrawn. The next step in the process is the land development portion, which requires a review by the township Planning Commission.

The Planning Commission will pass their recommendations on to the supervisors who will have the final vote on the project at the township level.

HOME HEATING ASSISTANCE Have you heard about LIHEAP? Those letters stand for LowIncome Home Energy Assistance Program. This federal program is administered locally by PPL Electric Utilities. Many in the areas are experiencing reduced income due to the closings and layoffs. Now that the winter months are upon us the cost of heating is added to the list of bills.

LIHEAP is accepting applications for cash and crisis grants through April 9, 2021. Whether you rent or own your home, you or someone you know may be eligible for free money toward your electric bill. PPH outlines the procedure to apply as follows: 1) Collect information for each resident in the home including name, date of birth, social security number, and proof of income, 2) Have your PPL account number ready, 3) Go online to www.pplelectric.com/liheap or call the hotline 1-866-857-7095 to apply. PPL reports that each year there are LIHEAP dollars left unclaimed and want to make sure that every family that is eligible gets the support they need.

From the Desk of Public Safety Tanglwood Lakes’ Public Safety has been quite busy the past few months. By now you have probably noticed the guard rail on Tanglwood Drive. In addition, sixty-six storage permits for recreational vehicles were issued. Sixteen tree removal permits were approved, a few painting, roofing and siding permits were given the ‘OK’ as well as some building and landscaping permits before the really cold weather hit.

Two fines for working without a permit were issued.

Remember - if you are doing any work outdoors, chances are you will need a permit. Contact the office and we can have a permit application emailed to you, get it from the Documents page from our website, or stop by and pick one up (mask required.) Nuisance complaints involving barking dogs were also looked into. A Public Safety vehicle was purchased in November 2020.

Car, beach and guest passes are available at the office. Make sure we have the correct information for you vehicles and we’ll be happy to give you your stickers.

The Latest on TLCA’s Protective Covenants In September 2019 we sent out a ballot to vote on a resolution that would make permanent the restrictive covenants that are part of every TLCA deed. These covenants expire in about 23 years. The covenants provide the legal basis for the creation of the TLCA Community, including the Board of Directors, Tanglwood Lakes Community Association, Inc., the entity that runs the Community, maintains our amenities and generally manage the Community. Were the covenants to expire the organizational structure of the Community would be destroyed and the property value of every home and lot in the Community would decline. The Board of Directors unanimously recommended

adoption of the resolution to make the restrictive covenants permanent rather than expire.

To date we have received 522 ballots. We want to thank all of you who submitted your ballots.

However, we need 67% of all the members to vote in favor of the making the covenants permanent, which means we need 565 of the 847 members to approve the change to the covenants. We still need to get all our members to vote.

Lewis once wrote, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” For those of us afflicted with bibliophilia, we can be comforted by the large majority of the population who share the intensity, joy, and satiation from frequently sitting down with a good book. Learning to read after writing your own name is a major benchmark and stepping stone for young children. This quote by Dr. Seuss could not be more accurate, “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Even with the popularity of streaming services such as Netflix, in recent years book consumption has increased rapidly and with a growing choice of formats which include audio from wireless sources or tapes and e-books. According to the Pew Research Center surveys, roughly seven-in-ten U.S. adults (72%) say they have read a book in the past 12 months in any format, a figure that has remained largely unchanged since 2012, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Print books remain the most popular format for reading, with 65% of adults saying they had read a print book in the year before the survey.

And while shares of print and e-book readers are similar to those from another Pew Research Center survey, there has been an uptick in the share of Americans who report listening to audiobooks, from 14% to 20%.

Overall, Americans read an average (mean) of 12 books per year, while the typical (median) American has read four books in the past 12 months. Each of these figures is largely unchanged since 2011, when the Center first began conducting the surveys of Americans’ book reading habits.

Despite some growth in certain digital formats, it remains the case that relatively few Americans only consume digital books (which include audiobooks and e-books) to the exclusion of print. Some 37% of Americans say they read only print books, while 28% read in these digital formats and also read print books. Just 7% of Americans say they only read books in digital formats and have not read any print books in the past 12 months. The local library offers e-books as well as print copies and many readers trade or share with friends in addition to buying online or downloading from book suppliers.

During this same time there has been a growth of neighborhood book clubs and websites devoted to exploring the reading tastes and reviews of books. Some of the more popular internet spots are Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, reviews from local library, sourcebooks.com, librarybooklists. org, readinggroupguides.com, and bookbrowse.com.

Tanglwood Activities: All About Tai Chi Are you looking for a way to improve your overall health and wellness? You might find Tai Chi could be the answer. Here in Tanglwood Lakes, we have two groups that gather weekly for Tai Chi in the Community Center and in warmer weather at the playground basketball court. This time of the year when we tend to stay indoors more an activity such as Tai Chi is especially beneficial mentally, physically, and emotionally.

JUST WHAT IS TAI CHI?

Specifically, Tai Chi is an art embracing the mind, body and spirit. Originating in ancient China, tai chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and soon delivers its health benefits. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey.

The flowing movements of tai chi contain much inner strength, like water flowing in a river, beneath the tranquil surface there is a current with immense power—the power for healing and wellness. With consistent practice, people will be able to feel the internal energy called qi and convert it to internal force called jing and use it to create more internal energy.

This process leads to a more balanced mental state and at the same time your fitness, agility, and balance will improve. The unique feature of tai chi is that it is internal. Internal means building the inner strength from inside out, therefore you can continue to develop at any age.

Tanglwood Residents Support Local Food Pantry In December, TLCA residents generously donated two car loads of much needed groceries to support our neighbors in need. These goods were delivered to the Loaves and Fishes food pantry located at the Paupack United Methodist Church on Route 507. The pantry ministry is coordinated by former TLCA resident Bob Paine and church member June Horton. Their pantry has been supporting local families for nearly 20 years. They have provided as many as 60 local families per month with needed provisions.

Bob and June indicated that in addition to groceries, they gladly accept money donations via checks made out to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (tax deductible). The cash donations are used to buy meat, eggs, and butter.

All food donations, including coffee and tea are much appreciated as well as paper products (especially toilet paper), dish and laundry detergent and even seasonal clothing for all ages.

The pantry normally distributes to families on the first Friday of each month and sometimes more often when needs are greater. An e-mail blast went out mid-December requesting donations and within a few days the boxes were overflowing. Bob and June were also surprised in December by a significant donation from the members of the TLCA 8-ball pool league. The league consists of residents and friends who elected to donate the money they collected for their end-of-year banquet this year that was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. TLCA resident and league coordinator, Tom Koster, presented a check for $700 to Loaves and Fishes in support of their ministry! Our Ever Faithful Maintenance Team The Maintenance Department at Tanglwood Lakes is kept busy in the Winter months due to the sometimes unpredictable weather conditions. Mid December brought approximately 15 inches of snow with windswept drifts adding to the accumulation. On Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day we were hit with very high winds, thunder, and heavy rain. Our ditches and any area with a slope experienced overflowing runoff and erosion. The Sunday of New Year’s weekend brought snow in the morning turning to icy rain by mid-afternoon. TLCA Maintenance responded quickly with plowing, salt and cinders, and rebuilding of some of the shoulders that were affected.

Tanglwoolies Always Busy After the very successful Harvest Café which included the quilt project, our Tanglwoolies turned their creative needles to assisting Safe Haven, a local organization based in Milford, Pa. Safe Haven of Pike County, Inc., is a crisis intervention center providing support to victims, survivors and their families experiencing past or current domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse and other crimes.

Safe Haven has a 24 hour hot line and also runs a children’s advocacy program in addition to counseling, legal services, and housing referrals.

The Tangwoolies put together attractive packages which included blankets and pillows along with cuddly stuffed animals and children’s book. During February, which is called “Red Heart Month”, the group will again be distributing red scarves to the Cardiac Rehab units in three area hospitals. Tanglwood Lakes is proud to have such an active, generous, and talented group.

As reported at the October Semi-Annual meeting, TLCA’s 2021 Budget provides for two welcome projects as part of New Capital expenses. The first which has been discussed for quite a while is to upgrade our bathhouse at the beach. Various ideas and plans for the needed renovation of this facility led to the inclusion in the budget for extensive repairs.

The second New Capital project involves our Maintenance area. In order to provide adequate shelter for Tanglwood’s equipment which now is stored outdoors, a second building is planned. This project will prolong the life of our vehicles and equipment such as the plows and spreaders and assist in proper upkeep.

OUR ENVIRONMENT Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District One of the favorable attributes of Tanglwood Lakes is the abundance of brooks and streams that crisscross within the community. These waterways including Lake Tanglwood are home to a great variety of plants, insects, birds, ducks, and fish as well as four-legged critters such as deer, beavers, raccoons, bear, fox, squirrels, and chipmunks.

All of the water that keeps moving through our properties flows into Kleinhans Creek. This map shows the creek and the area where it enters Lake Wallenpaupack. There is a marker sign on Route 507 at this area.

Kleinhans Creek is one of many streams that flow into Lake Wallenpaupack which are monitored by the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District. www.wallenpaupackwatershed.org provides information on this great natural resource for our area.

The Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District is a 501 (c)(3), non-profit corporation working to protect, maintain, and enhance water quality in Lake Wallenpaupack and its watershed.

We are responsible for monitoring water quality in the lake, providing education to residents and visitors, and facilitating the installation of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to prevent the flow of pollutants into Lake Wallenpaupack. The “Big Lake”, as it’s known locally, is a 5,700 acre impoundment in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania. Built by PPL Corporation in 1926 as a hydroelectric project, Lake Wallenpaupack has played a vital role in the economic development of the entire region.

The lake serves as the border of two counties and its 219 square mile watershed drains parts of four counties and fourteen municipalities. Due to its proximity to the New York Metropolitan area and the greater Lehigh Valley, Lake Wallenpaupack has become a major tourism and recreation destination. This proximity to urban areas has also facilitated significant growth during the past few decades relating to seasonal homes and commuters. During the time period from 1970 through 2000, the population of the watershed municipalities grew by 173%. It was during this time period that water quality issues began to manifest themselves and threaten the local tourism-based economy. In 1979, the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District (LWWMD) was formed to reach across political boundaries and assist the watershed community in addressing pollution in Lake Wallenpaupack.

Since the Tanglwood Lakes properties and waterways flow into Lake Wallenpaupack, we naturally endorse and affirm the goals of the Watershed Management. The WWMD promotes responsible stewardship by participating in research programs to monitor changing conditions, offering educational and outreach materials, and seeking grant funds.

Valentine’s Day By E. Muller What’s the deal with Valentine’s Day? How did the execution of two (or three?) people named Valentine turn into the hearts-and-roses holiday we celebrate in modern times? What kinds of twisted circumstances are responsible for this? According to Encyclopaedia Britannica and an op-ed article I read on the PBS website, Valentine’s Day has its origins in an ancient Roman holiday called Lupercalia. Lupercalia was held in mid-February and was a celebration of spring, complete with fertility rites of passage and the pairings of couples. During the feast of Lupercalia, the hides of sacrificed dogs and goats were used by men to (lightly??) whip a line of women, thus ensuring their fertility. The men would then pick the names of women and the couples would be paired up for the duration of the festival, which lasted from February 13 to February 15. (Other sources disagree with this theory.)

So what does this have to do with Valentine’s Day? Emperor Claudius II had two men, both named Valentine, executed in different years on February 14 during the third century AD. The two men would later be recognized as martyrs by the Catholic Church. Saint Valentine’s Day was born! To do away with the pagan rituals of Lupercalia, Pope Gelasius I combined St. Valentine’s Day with the Feast of Lupercalia in the fifth century AD. Coincidentally, the Normans celebrated Galatin’s Day at around the same time. It may be that Galatin’s Day (Galatin means lover of women) and Valentine’s Day became mixed up with and combined with one another.

The Smithsonian gives a different take on Valentine’s Day. According to The Smithsonian, there were at least three martyrs who bore the name of Valentine. Not much is known about the first one, so let’s proceed to the second one. According to spurious ancient legend, Valentinus, a Roman priest, was arrested during the reign of Emperor Gothicus and placed under the care of an aristocrat named Asterius. Apparently, Valentinus was quite the talker so Asterius promised that if Valentinus could cure his daughter’s blindness, he would convert. In turn, Valentinus would stop engaging in religious debate. Valentinus prayed and placed his hands over the girl’s eyes and what do you know? Her blindness was cured! Asterius and his whole family were baptized as promised. It turns out that when Emperor Gothicus heard of this miracle, he was not happy. The Emperor ordered that all involved be executed; Valentinus was the only one to be beheaded. Again, according to the legend, a pious widow carried away the body and had it buried on the Via Flaminia, the highway that once connected Rome to what is now Rimini. A chapel was built where Valentine’s remains lay. The third 3rd century Valentinus was a bishop in the province of Umbria. According to another legend, the third Valentine’s story is so similar to the previous one that it is quite possible that the two Valentines are actually one and the same. Both Valentinus’ hotly engaged in debate with a potential convert, healed a child, were beheaded and buried along the Via Flaminia. Hmm...

Other stories have more romantic themes: in one, St. Valentinus performed Christian marriage ceremonies and passed love notes between Christian lovers who were imprisoned by the Emperor. Another story speaks of a romance that bloomed between the blind girl and Valentine. Many churches and monasteries throughout medieval Europe claimed to have relics or bones belonging to St. Valentine. According to The Smithsonian article, there is no evidence to support the Lupercalia story. Oh well! But according to the article, Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote The Canterbury Tales as well as the Parlement of Foules, connected the dots between the mid-February mating of birds and the Feast of St. Valentinus. The idea spread, and nature-loving people began to send love-notes during the birds’ mating season. Love birds!! Centuries later, Shakespeare’s Ophelia spoke of herself as Hamlet’s valentine. As time went on, English men and women began to use February 14th as the day to send love poems to their sweethearts in homemade cards. Once the holiday came to America, it wasn’t long before the Industrial Revolution had a hand in making the holiday what it is today. Hallmark Cards of Kansas City began mass-producing valentines and simultaneously created a billions-in-dollars industry. Cupid, the Roman god of love, was frequently depicted on the cards, as were birds (remember the mating season theory?) Candy companies - “Sweets to the sweet!” - and florists soon followed suit. And who can forget those cheesy Pocono hotels with heart-shaped tub commercials? No matter what you believe or how you celebrate, have a very happy Valentine’s Day!

All About Hibernation: Tribute to the Groundhog Around this time of the Winter, our thoughts turn to one of the area’s favorite rodents: the groundhog. The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, ankle twister, and predictor of Spring, belongs to the rodent family which is part of a group of large ground squirrels and is also classified as an animal that hibernates. We most often think of bears as the prime example of hibernation. In the northeast United States these cold months finds chipmunks, turtles, bats, frogs, snakes, certain ground squirrels (except for the ones that pillage the bird feeders) , insects, rodents, skunks, raccoon, porcupine, and even the ladybug as critters that hibernate.

In the fascinating world of nature the challenge to survive cold, dark winters without having to forage for food or migrate to a warmer area results in a form of hibernation turning down their metabolism to save energy. These forms are termed aestivation, torpor, and denning. Hibernating is more profound than simply sleeping through.

Depending on the species, it can vary from long, deep unconsciousness to light spells of inactivity.

A hibernating animal’s metabolism slows and its temperature plunges – in ground squirrels it can fall to -2°C. Breathing slows and, in bats, the heart rate can fall from 400 to 11 beats per minute. Some cold-blooded animals, such as wood frogs, produce natural antifreezes to survive being frozen solid. Mammals prepare by feeding heavily in summer and autumn, storing fat to see them through the winter. However, animals may die during hibernation from lack of fat, severe weather or premature awakening.

Aestivation is the equivalent process to hibernation, but for animals in hot climates that are trying to escape extreme heat or drought. Animals that aestivate include terrestrial and aquatic animals, including lungfish, earthworms, snails, amphibians and reptiles, including Nile crocodiles. Most animals bury themselves in the ground, which protects them from the heat. Here, they wait for the wet season or cooler temperatures. Some land snails climb trees to escape the heat of the ground, sealing themselves into their shells using dried mucus. The danger is that large number of aestivating animals perish in periods of prolonged drought.

Another form is called Torpor which is a brief bout of suspended animation, usually lasting less than a day, when an animal’s breathing, heartbeat, body temperature and metabolism are reduced. Torpor conserves energy in the short term and often helps the animal survive a brief bout of poor conditions, such as cold nights. Birds such as hummingbirds and frogmouths, or small mammals such as bats, can go into torpor every day. One of the problems with torpor is that the animals are too sluggish to react to predators. And, if the cold spell is unusually long, the animal may die if its body temperature drops too low.

An additional form of hibernation is termed Denning. This is a light form of dormancy typical of bears, where the animal is groggy, but easily roused. A bear’s body temperature only drops a few degrees, but it loses up to 40 per cent of its body weight – more than true hibernators. Amazingly, many female bears give birth and suckle young while denning. Bears eat a lot of high-energy food to build-up fat reserves that will last all winter. However, a bear can be woken easily during a mild spell of weather and not have enough energy to survive when more severe weather returns. (source: www.discoverwildlife.com) Something to think about: A likely questions comes up as to why don’t human beings hibernate. The website sciencefocus.com offers this explanation - Hibernation is a response to cold weather and reduced food availability. Most animals that hibernate are quite small and, as the weather gets colder, they reach the point where they simply can’t eat enough food to sustain their body temperature. Humans don’t hibernate for two reasons. Firstly, our evolutionary ancestors were tropical animals with no history of hibernating: humans have only migrated into temperate and sub-arctic latitudes in the last hundred thousand years or so. That’s not quite long enough to evolve all the metabolic adaptations we would need to be able to hibernate. Much more importantly though, we discovered fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and agriculture, all of which are much more effective ways of surviving the cold. Any ancient tribes that tried to sleep their way through the winter would quickly have been ousted by the guys with the fur clothes sitting around the camp fire in the next cave along.

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it’s easy to lose motivation to get outside. Sure, it’s not as simple as it is in the warmer months when you can just throw on your shoes and hit the trail. But, with a shift in your mindset and these winter hiking tips, hiking in the winter is actually really fun. It’s a great way to stay active and healthy during the darker months when you might feel inclined to hunker down in front of the tv. Not only will hiking provide physical benefits, like strength, balance, and cardiovascular health, but spending time outside boosts your mood and improves mental health too. So, hiking just might help you combat the winter blues if you get cabin fever. Whether you’re not a winter person or you’re winter’s biggest fan, we want you to feel comfortable getting outside and enjoying all four seasons. So, we put together a complete guide to winter hiking, including gear and tips on how to stay safe and warm on the trail.

GENERAL WINTER HIKING TIPS Winter hiking requires some more planning than a regular hiking excursion because you need to take extra safety precautions to combat harsh elements.

Here are several important things to be aware of that differ from hiking in other seasons: Daylight hours are shorter in winter, so hit the trail early to avoid being out in the dark.

Winter hiking takes longer than summer hiking – you tend to move slower and encounter more obstacles.

Plan accordingly.

Technological devices tend to malfunction in cold temperatures, so bring extra batteries/battery packs.

Don’t rely on your phone.

Snowpack can hide the trail and trail markers making it easier to get lost. Pay attention and know how to use a map.

Exercising in winter burns more calories, so you need to stay nourished. This will keep you warm, too.

Dehydration expedites the onset of hypothermia, so stay hydrated. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

TIPS FOR STAYING WARM HIKING IN THE WINTER Of course, you’ll be more comfortable staying active outdoors during the winter if you’ve got appropriate winter hiking gear. But, there are some more steps you can take to stay warm that are just as important.

Bring A Warm Drink In A Thermos - One of our favorite winter hiking tips is to fill up a big thermos, like this one, with your favorite hot beverage. Hot cocoa, cider, chai tea, or even soup broth is great for quick sips to warm you up. While we probably don’t need to say it, go without alcohol on cold-weather hikes, as alcohol reduces your body temperature. You can enjoy that hot toddy once you’re back at home.

Stay Hydrated - Use an insulating hose for your Camelback or an insulated bottle sleeve for water bottles when you hike in winter. This will prevent water in the hose from freezing if you are in extreme temperatures. If you don’t have a special water bottle, wrap your water bottle in some wool socks or in a beanie in your backpack to help insulate it.

Hike With The Sun - In summer months, you want to avoid the sunniest part of the day when hiking. In the winter, it’s the opposite. For winter hiking, try to time your hike for when the sun is highest in the sky and the warmest.

As soon as the sun drops behind the mountains and the trail becomes shady, temperatures can drop significantly. If you plan on catching the sunset, we recommend not being too far from the trailhead and make sure to pack extra layers.

Choose Trails With Some Uphill To Get The Blood Flowing - Just like climbing stairs, the uphill sections of your winter hikes will get your heart pumping. This helps to increase your circulation and raise your internal body temperature, which will keep you nice and toasty.

Bring Snacks You Can Eat Without Stopping - Your body will need twice the calories it usually does while hiking in the winter, because it’s burning more to stay warm. Pack snacks that are high in protein to give you energy. It’s important that the snacks you bring winter hiking are quick and easy to eat while on the move. Leave the sandwich fixings and picnic at home. Stopping for a long time to eat will leave you cold, and your muscles will have a harder time warming up again.

WHAT TO WEAR WINTER HIKING - Clothing

The key to comfort when winter hiking is staying warm AND dry. You should have 3 layers on top.

Avoid cotton and opt for synthetic layers that wick moisture and are quick drying. On the bottom fleece leggings will keep you warm and comfortable. Always pack a pair of gloves. When I hike uphill in winter, I find my hands run warm, so a lightweight waterproof pair of gloves does the trick.

On your feet regular waterproof hiking boots along with mid-weight wool socks should keep you comfortable.

You lose a significant amount of heat through the top of your head so wearing a hat is an important tip for winter hiking.

WHERE TO GO FOR WINTER HIKES:

Briarwood Trail – Tanglwood’s own Nature Preserve: Located on Tanglwood Drive across from the Playground and bordered by Rosewood and Briarwood Drives. Within the 34 acres of the area is a winding one-mile hiking trail with a number of benches along the way. A swift-flowing stream runs through the center of the preserve and the two footbridges allow you to stop and sometimes glimpse the beaver lodges, view deer getting a drink, other native animal habitats, or a variety of flora commonly found in the ponds, meadows, and woodlands of Northeast Pennsylvania.

D & H Rail Trail - Enjoy the tranquil scenery along the rolling Lackawanna River. Hike along snow covered meadows, small towns, riverfront forests and expansive rural landscapes. This 38-mile trail makes its way from Carbondale to the New York Border with plenty of NEPA history along the way. This 38-mile recreational trail stretches from Carbondale to the New York border following the old Delaware and Hudson railroad line. It runs along the scenic Lackawanna River to the Stillwater Dam

where it continues to wind through rural Wayne and Susquehanna Counties. The trail offers plenty of opportunities to view wildlife and to stop for some historical sightseeing. The trail terrain is made up of ballast, cinder and hard-packed dirt and is mostly used for hiking, running and biking. Some sections of the trail are open to horseback and snow mobiles. On the D&H Rail-Trail, you can explore an integral part of NEPA’s railroad and coal mining history. Be sure to stop in the welcoming small towns and villages along the way.

Lake Wallenpaupack Trail - Lake Wallenpaupack Trail is a 2.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Hawley, Pennsylvania that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, trail running, and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Parking is available by the Visitor’s Center off of Route 6.

Holiday Decorating Contest Brings Invasion Of Giant Snow Creatures

The 2020 Tanglwood Merry and Bright Holiday Decorating Contest kicked off on the day after Thanksgiving. As November rolled over to December more and more residents adorned their homes and properties with designs and displays to light up the night. This year saw a noticeable increase in the number of homes celebrating the holidays with outside decorations of every color, theme, and tradition. Stars, Santas, angels, reindeer, manger scenes, snow families, and trains were in evidence on the many roads in Tanglwood. A team of eight judges rode around in the evening to take in the sights and try to categorize the possible winners. The judges narrowed down their selections and went back a second or third time to come up with the finalists. There were so many first-rate displays to choose from and we hope that many of you were able to take in the sights during the Christmas season and enjoy the Tanglwood neighborhood. By now, eleven months into the pandemic, we’re all antsy and the cold weather may compound our feelings of isolation and ennui. However, winter can also give us reasons to get out and enjoy the snow, the ice and winter activities. If you do go out to ski, ice fish, skate or even shovel your driveway, keep reading for tips to keep you safe.

First, let’s talk about how to safely shovel snow from your walkway and driveway.

According to the National Safety Council, thousands of people become injured every year and nearly 100 people die in the US while shoveling snow.

The National Safety Council recommends the following: Don’t smoke while shoveling

Don’t shovel right after eating

Stretch before you begin, go slowly and do not work until you reach the point of exhaustion Shovel while the snow is fresh, if possible

Do not do any shoveling without your doctor’s permission if you have a history of heart disease.

Now that you’ve gotten out of your driveway, you might want to ski, snowboard, skate or go ice fishing. Please read on for more safety tips for all those activities.

One of the first safety tips for any of the following sports is to let someone know of your plans (what you are going to do, where, with whom and when) and keep your fully charged cellphone Know the signs of a heart attack and with you whenever possible.

Push the snow (don’t try to lift it) but if you must lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel with snow, and lift with your legs, not your back

Heart attack:

Chest discomfort, usually in the center of the chest, lasting a few minutes of coming and going in waves. The discomfort may feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain

Discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach

While skiing and snowboarding:

Do not ski or snowboard alone

Always wear a helmet designed for skiing/snowboarding

Wear sunscreen and goggles, making sure the goggles fit properly with your helmet

Wear boots that fit properly and are Shortness of breath, with or without in good condition chest discomfort Wear layers of clothing, a hat or Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea headband and a warm pair of gloves or lightheadedness Follow all trail rules and stay on designated trails Stroke: (Remember the acronym FAST) Stay on trails that match your skill level Is your face drooping on one side?

Can you smile?

Take a lesson Is one arm weak or numb? Can you raise both arms? Does one arm drift Make sure you know how to properly use the ski lift, tow rope, downwards? etc. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask an attendant for assistance Is your speech slurred? Are you unable to speak or are you difficult to understand?

Patch chips or holes whenever you can or mark the area to let skaters know to avoid that section of the ice. Clear any debris from the ice as soon as possible Make sure skaters wear wellfitting skates. Skates that do not fit properly can causing falls, blisters and even frostbite

Make sure the ice is thick enough to safely skate. A minimum of 4” is required for activities on foot. If you are unsure if the ice is thick enough, stay off and stay safe

Before heading out to go ice fishing, please:

Share your plans with family or friends. Let them know where you will be and when you plan on coming home. Bring your cellphone and make sure it is fully charged

Do not ice fish alone

Talk to the locals (tackle shops, etc.) for information on ice thickness, water movement, etc.

Follow these ice thickness guidelines: 2” or less, stay off; 4” are required for ice fishing, skating and other activities on foot; 5” are required to support a snowmobile or ATV; 8” - 12’ are required for a car or small pickup truck; 12” - 15” are required for a medium sized truck. Remember that ice thickness can change very quickly. Be aware of the current under the ice as ice will be weaker due to moving water

Leave the lake before darkness falls Use proper ventilation if your ice shanty is heated

Exercise caution while using your ice auger. Read the manual and keep the blades sharp, do not wear loose clothing or jewelry while operating
