Around the Lake
The Semi-annual membership meeting held on Saturday, October 19 at Paupack Hills was very well attended and featured three important components. These included: 1) An overview of Lake Tanglwood and its watershed issues by Princeton Hydro, 2) The presentation of the 2020 Budget, and 3) The results of the Board Elections. Dr. Fred Lubnow from Princeton Hydro gave a presentation followed by a Q &A on Lake Tanglwood. Princeton Hydro is an ecological and engineering consulting firm for watershed management. They create and implement plans and programs to sustain and enhance the characteristics of a watershed that affect the plant, animal and human communities in a given water area. Their focus includes assessment of the water supply, water quality, drainage, and storm-water runoff. Dr. Lubnow stressed that Lake Tanglwood’s management plan is proceeding correctly as the lake area is highly forested and the current treatment and aeration program is effective. Additionally, the installation of the Forebay at the Indian Drive dock area will further help control sediment and runoff. He stated that the water quality is healthy and good for habitat and recreation. The second part of the presentation talked about what is involved in dredging. Dredging occurs to deal with past issues if sediment inflow management is not effective. This procedure can remove levels of sediment from the more shallow portions of the lake which in turn discourages growth of aquatic vegetation. Princeton Hydro identified four locations where dredging is recommended. They will oversee all permits and bid specifications, contact with the DEP, staging of the dredged material, possible need for dewatering, and the decision of either a hydraulic or a mechanical procedure. The Q & A that followed emphasized the need for ongoing management of Lake Tanglwood that includes the completion of the Forebay, controlling runoff through ditch and culvert maintenance, and upkeep of the stormwater catch basins.
