From You r Boa r d Of Dir ec tor s BY ANNETTE DOERR How is it December already? As a board we’ve been busy working with the Management team and department heads to approve the 2022 budget. The public posting of it should be available on the website for public viewing and comment for the next few weeks. As the days get shorter and colder, be ready for when the first big winter storms hit our area. Being prepared for a winter emergency is a necessary evil living in northeast Pennsylvania. Know your winter weather terms: Winter Storm Warning: Issued when hazardous winter weather in the form of heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, or heavy sleet is imminent or occurring. Winter Storm Spring 2021 Big Bass LakeViews 5 Warnings are usually issued 12 to 24 hours before the event is expected to begin. Winter Storm Watch: Alerts the public to the possibility of a blizzard, heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, or heavy sleet. Winter Storm Watches are usually issued 12 to 48 hours before the beginning of a Winter Storm. Winter Weather Advisory: Issued for accumulations of snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and sleet which will cause significant inconveniences and, if caution is not exercised, could lead to lifethreatening situations. Preparing for Winter Weather: Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping. Learn how to keep pipes from freezing. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups. Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Remember the needs of your pets. Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights.

2021

From T he Gener a l M a n ager BY DAVE TIMKO At the November 19, 2021 Board of Directors meeting, the PFCCA Board voted and approved the implementation of the 5.9% COLA (cost of living adjustment) released by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on October 13, 2021, and applied to the 2022 annual assessments of PFCCA. According to the AARP, the average monthly social security benefit will increase by $92.00 a month. At a 5.9% increase, it is the highest increase to the COLA since 1982 when the COLA was released at 7.4%. The annual adjustments to the COLA are based on inflation and released by the SSA, usually in mid-October. An increase in the amount of monthly checks is a direct indicator of consumer prices having gone up. Although our expenses were forecasted to increase for this past year, the Board of Directors chose not to invoke the COLA for 2021. The last time the Board invoked the COLA, the increase was 1.6% in 2019. PFCCA is not different when it comes to experiencing inflationary cost increases and increased costs of goods and services. As with most employers around the Country, it has become very difficult to attract and retain staff to fill the open positions that exist. Payroll and payroll related costs/benefits are projected to be up an average of 16% in 2022. Our trash removal services are increasing by 9% and gas prices are up 44%+. In addition, the outdoor pool liner needs to be replaced at a cost of $300,000.00 to $350,000.00 prior to the 2022 season.

How does this impact a Pocono Farms improved lot homeowner or unimproved lot owner? • For an improved lot owner, the 2022 assessment will increase $83.00 per year or about $6.92 per month. The 2022 assessment for an improved lot will be $1,520.00/year. • For an unimproved lot owner, the 2022 assessment will increase $60.00 per year or $5.00 per month. The 2022 assessment for an unimproved lot will be $1,110.00/year. In closing, it is the responsibility of the Board to maintain fiscal responsibility on behalf of its members. At times, it is necessary for the board to implement the COLA increases to keep pace with inflationary costs beyond its control. Applying the COLA allows the board to keep up with these costs for the long term sustainability of Pocono Farms. The Board is committed to honoring its fiduciary responsibility to the Association in managing the business affairs in trust for its members along with the financial stability for the future.

P u blic Sa fet y

BY EDWARD KELLY

BY ARTIE FURMAN December is upon us, and it came much too fast. It also brought along a cold Winters blast. We’re still working hard - my staff, Maggie, and me, patrolling the roads citations we write as fast as can be. Permits we’ve done plenty, a few hundred I think, at this pace the year will be gone in a blink! Yes, the year is almost over but there is no time to rest, and go on we do, giving it our best. The wind blowing hard, the air much too cold. I’m complaining too much, guess I’m just getting old. Most snowbirds are gone, though some are still left, but those few are packing for their warm climate nest. The rest of us must salt, shovel and plow and we survive every year, but I just don’t know how. So many things we accomplished this year, I will try to remember and hope to be clear. Short term rentals have grown by the score, each month there seems to be more and more. Illegal dumping seemed worse this year as we would pick up the bags, but then more would appear. A team effort it was, The County, the Township, and even help from above. But in every case, we found out who did it, and we made sure that they knew to quit it. Covid though bad, was better this year, we had many events that we hold so dear. Our Super Bowl party occurred and boy we did eat, and Brunch with the Bunny was quiet a treat. July 4th came with weather slightly askew, but we held fast to our plan and the fireworks flew. Labor Day fun and the Denny was great, fall fest was filling with food crammed on my plate. The Turkey Bash came oh my yes it did, I ate so much bird I needed a bib. The Holiday Party will be great so I hear and then comes the jolly old fellow with all those reindeer. 2021 will be over so soon you’ll agree, and in the blink of an eye 2022 it will be. Work hard we will, as we always do, doing the best job we can for each one of you. I wish for us all much better times ahead, that this pandemic will end and not fill us with dread. That we can be filled with joy and all of life’s charms and we enjoy life to the fullest here at Pocono Farms.

December means holidays, family gatherings maybe a little reflection on the past year. Last December we got good news that the vaccines had been approved and with a little luck, we’ll be able to get a shot before the virus gets us. Here we are now, the shots are in our arms and things are looking a lot better for us than they were a year ago. This year, we have all learned a new term being thrown about every day, “supply chain” back up. We don’t worry so much about the virus anymore, but rather are we going to able to get that Christmas gift we’ve been thinking about getting for one of the kids. How the mundane has replaced our fears. Those of us who have been volunteering and riding the roads in Pocono farms this past year are wondering if we will ever be able to convince a few more neighbors to join us in volunteering to help make our community the place we all want it to be. Fortunately, we have not encountered a lot of crime here, but we do our best to provide a neighborhood watch group that helps to maintain the quality of life we all came here to experience. The local police applaud our efforts and many of our neighbors wave and smile as we go by, but the twelve or thirteen volunteers can’t fill all the hours that make a meaningful difference. You probably don’t know of the dumping of trash that takes place every week that is reported and picked up by our maintenance people or Coolbaugh DPW workers. Without the drivers much of this would go unreported and would become an eyesore and made worse after the animals get into them. We understand that we must rely on our retired and stay at home neighbors. If gas prices hold you back, we do provide a gas stipend to keep that from being a problem. In October, our volunteers drove for 128 hours, with several people taking multiple shifts. Help us keep this group going, what they do is more valuable than you may realize. Two hours a month or more shouldn’t be too much to ask to help keep our community the place we all want it to be. Contact the office at 570-894-4435, or leave a message for Russ Kelly at 570-894-4034.

Pocono Fa r m s Welcom e ’s a Ne w R ecr e at ion Dir ec tor ! Hello, Poconos community! I’m very excited to join your family as Recreation Director and I hope to meet you all very soon. In case I don’t meet you right away, I’ll share with you some details about myself. My name is Allison Strauch, but you can just call me Alli. I grew up in Factoryville, PA with my two older sisters and two golden retrievers. I currently have an Australian Shepherd, named Milo, and I should have named him Hyper, since all he wants to do is play catch with the frisbee, even when it’s 2 am and freezing. He has no cares. In the summertime, my family and I did a lot of traveling. I’ve been to around 25 states and 13 countries. Besides traveling, my other interests include hiking, skiing, and watching comedians on Netflix, such as John Mulaney, Bert Kreischer, and Tom Segura. I watched a lot of their shows while I was attending West Chester University of Pennsylvania. I recently graduated from there with a degree in Business Management with minors in Human Resources and Business Law. While I was a student, I worked as a Resident Assistant where my main duties were to connect students and throw fun and inviting events. I’m hoping to bring what I learned from my college and lifetime experiences and meld them into this position in order to connect with the community while having a great time!

1st A nn ua l Moun ta i ns of Hope C a ncer Awa r eness E v en t - A Gr e at Success! BY COLLETTE ONG To the Members of Pocono Farms Country Club, to the Board of Directors and Staff of Pocono Farms Country Club, to anyone who touched or participated in the 1st Annual Mountains of Hope Cancer Awareness Event in any way… I want to say THANK YOU! Everyone is impacted by cancer. Often when a cancer diagnosis is made, fear, uncertainty and helplessness can overwhelm us. When my family was affected by this dreadful disease, multiple times over, I too felt helpless, powerless, and scared. Even with my entire career spent in Cancer Clinical Research, I couldn’t stop those feelings… so I needed to do something, something that would help and impact many, my community. The 1st Annual Mountains of Hope Cancer Awareness Event was created. A vision turned into a reality. We stayed the course, waited out the pandemic, were patient and committed and thanks to Pocono Farms we hosted an amazingly successful event! The 1st Annual Mountains of Hope Cancer Awareness Event at Pocono Farms Country Club on Saturday, October 9, 2021 was a celebration of cancer survivors, clinicians, our community, and our healthcare champions. Everyone’s support will now transition to HOPE to those affected by cancer. I had a modest fundraising goal of $10,000, together with all of you we surpassed my 1st goal, 2nd goal and then we surpassed my dream goal. Together we raised $25,000. All of that money, 100% will be returned to Lehigh Valley Health Network and the Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center in Stroudsburg, targeted to cancer clinical trials.

From left to right: Luminaries on the lake, the Pocono Duo during the Cocktail Hour, the over 20 Silent Auction items and over 30 amazing basket raffles.

A special thank you to all our colleagues at Lehigh Valley Health Network, LVHN Pocono Foundation, LVHN Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center, to our local community businesses who supported our event, to our family, friends and everyone who touched this event in some way, big or small, for making this vision a reality. A special thank you to Dr. Suresh Nair, Physician-in-Chief, LVHN Cancer Institute who helped bring my vision to a reality, without his passion and commitment to improving cancer care in our communities. Another special thank you to Katrina Weithman, you saw my vision and understood what I was hoping for, and truly allowed it to happen. I could not have done this without you, your expertise, professionalism, and support were truly a gift! To everyone especially my family, cancer hurts and for me this is a road to recovering from our losses. It was Dad and Shaun that brought this vision to life and thank you for supporting me in making them proud. For everyone within Pocono Farms, always know I am here working for us in growing our cancer clinical trials resources in the Poconos. Until next year… and the 2nd Annual Mountains of Hope Cancer Awareness Event! Thank you!

Our student volunteers, guests, and the Event in action.

F un w it h Fitness BY KRISSIE AYLWARD, PFCCA FITNESS DIRECTOR

It’s December already! This year has flown by, and we made it through with flying colors. I am truly grateful for all the fitness members who have made their health and the health of others a priority. Keeping the gym and classroom areas clean and sanitized wasn’t an easy job this year but because we worked as a team that task became much easier. I appreciate all of you for doing your part. The cold months are upon us and with that comes the snow. Please be mindful when shoveling to take breaks and protect your back. Bend at the knees and lift with your legs. Be careful of the twisting and throwing as well. I see so many back injuries happen as well as shoulder injuries during these winter months. Proper footing is also key especially when there’s ice. On the topic of proper footing, I know that we tend to throw on our sneakers and head to the gym without a care in the warm months but in these winter months I would ask that you bring a clean pair of sneakers to use in the fitness center. You can use the locker rooms to change your shoes and leave any wet footwear on the shoe trays. The salt and debris from outside can cause quite a bit of damage to the cardio machines, mainly the treadmills. The debris gets under the tread and into the roller which can create loud noises, jams in the roller belt and ultimately the replacement of expensive parts. Wet shoes can also make the floors slippery. We don’t want anyone falling and injuring themselves. As you have all been very mindful and diligent about cleaning the machines before/ after use I ask that you now be mindful and diligent about bringing a change of shoes to use in the fitness center during the winter months. I wish you all a happy holiday season!

R ound by R ound BY RODGER SPEAR Winter has gradually creeped up on us which allows us time to reflect on the past year and all that has been accomplished with the limited resources available to the golf program. The Board of Directors, Administration, Golf Course Superintendent and his staff, our Golf Professional and his staff and the Golf Committee came together to make significant changes and improvements to our great golf course to not only improve play, but to enhance the overall golf experience at Pocono Farms. A few years ago a tree and brush removal program was started and continued this past year to make the golf course more playable and enjoyable. Plans are to continue the program going forward to ensure that we stay ahead of the encroachment of trees and brush on the course. Additionally, a major Greenside Bunker project started in the spring and completed in late spring early summer was a significant improvement to our greenside bunker complexes and included in many cases redesign, shaping, shallowing and splitting the bunkers as well as new drainage and installation of the porous lining in the bottom of the bunkers to allow for appropriate drainage. Even with the excessive and heavy rains our bunkers drained quickly with very little damage and erosion. The results of this project has been beyond expectation and most all of our members and guests have commented on the appearance and playability of the course. The golf course has been maintained at a high standard throughout the year, despite the excessive rain, by our golf course superintendent and his staff on a limited budget and with significantly less staff than normally would be needed to maintain a golf course of our size. “Shout out’’ to Jeff and crew for a fantastic job. Plans are also in the works, although not yet funded, to redo the fairway bunkers and expand and improve the tee boxes in the future. That being said, 2022 looks to be a great year and we can’t wait until the Spring!
