Feathered Friends At this time of trouble, birding is among the best. We take short walks with binoculars, in our hunt for nests! Not hard to social distance we stay six feet away. Our masks are cedar waxwings, Feathered Friends is what we say! Eagles, wrens and warblers, and ducks to name a few. They flicker all about us with wings what would you do? If birds and nature are what you like you’re welcome to join us for a hike!
Fun Paddle at Brady’s Lake By Linda Bernstein
Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center held a Fun Paddling Trip Since most group activities have been put on hold due to the Covid-19 precautions, it was nice to be able to go on a group paddle up Brady’s Lake. The purpose of the trip was to discover so-called carnivorous plants, ones that get most of their nourishment from animal matter, rather than from photosynthesis. The trip was run by three staff members of Kettle Creek. After assembling and hearing the safety instructions as a group, all masked up, we were able to remove our masks once we were in our own kayaks. We were led up to the far end of Brady’s Lake to the inlet. Fortunately, there was no wind because this was about a 45-minute paddle, and much longer and more difficult if it’s a windy day. We passed a majestic eagle on the upper branch of the pine tree at the first peninsula sticking out into the lake, as well as many beaver lodges along the shore. When we got to the inlet, the guide showed us something called Bladderwort that she pulled out of the water. You might think this was a piece of evergreen tree with something like frogs’ eggs attached -clear, glistening gelatinous beads. Actually, those shiny “beads” are hinged air bladders.
