s a third-year medical student, Dr. Quynh-Thu “Gigi” Doan, MD worked a twenty-four hour shift overnight every four days. She says, “Was it grueling and exhausting? Absolutely! But working my Ob/gyn shift was also exhilarating and thrilling. I’ll never forget the adrenaline surge the first time I delivered a baby. I’m so lucky to have found a profession that I love completely and absolutely!” “As a woman, I have the advantage of having been both a patient and a doctor, so I know how awkward and vulnerable you can feel. That’s why I always have new patients meet me first for a fully-dressed chat in my office. I can’t tell you how many times during that first interview I find out a woman hasn’t been to an Ob/gyn in five years. Businesswomen, teachers, doctors, moms, wives, chefs, and chauffeurs...my patients may wear a dozen different ‘hats’ in their busy lives. I tell them the same thing I tell myself: Sometimes you have to take care of yourself first, so you’ll be able to continue caring for others.” “During your exam, we’ll chat about your kids, your life, all kinds of things. When I start asking questions, that’s when my patients feel comfortable enough to tell me how they really feel. Whether you’ve suffered from heavy periods for years, pain during intercourse, or incontinence during activity, tell me. Believe me, no matter what you’re experiencing, you’re not the only one. I had a patient who put off getting an exam because she was sure she’d have to get a hysterectomy...but she was surprised at how many other treatment options we had! And sometimes a little problem you’ve been ignoring really is part of a larger issue. Early detection through regular exams is your best protection!” “Whether it’s an adolescent’s first gynecological exam, counseling about birth control options, supporting you through a difficult pregnancy, managing irregular or painful periods, or advising you through the changes of menopause, we’ll build a relationship with each other. I can give you the support you need as your life and your fertility change.” “Having my own office gives me the control and flexibility to design a practice that really reflects my philosophy of care...and it means my patients know that they’ll be seeing me for every visit. When patients refer their friends or family to me or when nurses from the hospital come to see me, it’s the greatest compliment. Sometimes my patients ask how I can be so patient with them...and I tell them it’s because I consider it an honor and a blessing to care for them!” Dr. Quynh-Thu “Gigi” Doan, MD 281-717-4366 777 South Fry Road, Suite 202, Katy, Texas 77450 www.drgigidoan.com

Train the Brain! Amy Sharp

D

id your child have a not-so-stellar school year? Is the school recommending tutoring for the summer, to prepare your child for the next grade level? Owners David and Nicole Midkiff, a speechlanguage pathologist, of the LearningRx right here in Katy say, “What your kids ‘know’ is only part of being smart. If your child has areas of cognitive weakness, more tutoring or excessive studying is just like putting a little duct tape on the problem. You really want to fix the problem at its source.” This could be the summer to train your child’s brain! Assistant Director Ellie Franz says, “Typically, the way to help a struggling student is either through Accommodation, which is a passive strategy that simply accepts the learning limits as permanent and provides “special programs” for an individual. The second method is compensation, making changes to an individual’s environment or selecting challenges that fit strengths. With Brain Training, LearningRx offers a third method... identifying and overcoming the source of struggle by improving cognitive skill through training. LearningRx targets weaknesses to strengthen an individual’s brain power for immediate and long-term results. Twenty years of research in clinics, schools, and hospitals have culminated in LearningRx’s targeted programs which identify and build up areas in the brain that need work.” After an initial assessment to identify cognitive weaknesses such as auditory processing, memory and visual skills, David will go over the results during a consultation and recommend a specific program to strengthen and sharpen any cognitive skills needing improvement. The programs are delivered one-onone with a skilled personal trainer. David says, “These intensive, personalized programs are incredibly effective. In fact, they actually change the brain itself…for better, more effective learning.” And since your child will work one-on-one with a trainer, LearningRx is a flexible option that will work around your busy summer schedule. LearningRx has proven effective with kids all over the learning spectrum. Assistant Director Ellie says, “We train kids with ADHD, Dyslexia and Autism…but we also train G/T kids. Sometimes it’s not just the kids with difficulties that need help. LearningRx brain training has the power to improve the quality of life and learning

for almost any student, regardless of their current level of learning or reading ability.” Would you like to see a snapshot of your child’s cognitive ability, or even your own? Owners David and Nicole encourage you to stop by the Cinco Ranch location today. During your visit, their team can explain the program and testing procedures and even give you a demonstration of their brain training techniques. Visit the LearningRx Cinco Ranch website and Facebook page for more information and special offers. LearningRx is now offering discounted programs for Homeschoolers beginning June 1st and Summer Enrichment Programs lasting 6 – 8 weeks for qualified students. It’s time to build your child’s brainpower and make learning a breeze!

Hello Neighbors, A community this size needs a voice, something that reflects the broad opinions, lifestyles and the way we live. But more importantly, a community is made up of people. And people, naturally, have stories. What do your kids think about their schools? Where’s a good place to find a dentist? How about that new place off of 99? Our aim is for you to pick up this magazine and have answers to all of those questions. I created UpClose Magazine back in 1995 in an effort to help promote area businesses. As a shop owner myself, I felt there was a better way to communicate to homeowners what the area had to offer in goods and services. With that idea in mind, UpClose Magazine was taken from concept

Setting a Different Course

Sarah Warburton magine the wreck of a once-proud ship. Rot and rust have eaten away at the hull and the remains of the tattered sail hang limply from the mast. If it were not wedged against solid rock, it would have sunk. What made this ship run aground...poor navigation, an unruly crew, or shoddy equipment? “Shipwrecks are usually found wrecked in remote areas,” says Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land, says, “but today many regions are facing the question of what to do with failed dealerships right in the middle of their communities.” The same issues that wreck a ship––mismanagement, poor planning, or unethical behavior––can wreck a business. Don says, “Four years ago, when we took over the dealership that stands at the corner of 59 and 90A, I claimed this abandoned, empty shipwreck, gathered an experienced, trustworthy crew, restocked her and made her seaworthy, then put her back on course. We completely opened up all our buildings to create a welcoming space and reflect our down-to-earth, open philosophy. New lights and redesigned driveways make it easier and safer for our customers to enter or exit. And our team wears professional, casual attire that really invites you to ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference.’” These changes are more than a new coat of paint and shiny sign...they’re built to last. “We want to streamline the car-buying process,” Don says, “so you don’t have to wait for a lot of second-guessing and extra approvals. Today General Motors has recognized Classic Chevy as a GM Dealer of the Year three years in a row...an honor only given to the top two percent of Chevrolet dealers in the region for excellence in customer service. Finding Someone Who Believed Me...and Could Help:

Kenda’s Story Live

“T

Love

he road I travelled trying to find a normal, pain-free life was so difficult,” says thirty-three-year-old Kenda Blass-King, “but if one person can learn from my story, it will be worthwhile!” “When I was eighteen, I had my first laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis with my regular Ob/Gyn, then several more before seeing a specialist. My Ob/Gyn removed my right tube and ovary, but I still needed two surgeries a year...and I lived with abdominal pain with countless visits to the Emergency Rooms with my parents at my side since my teenage years. My periods were extremely heavy, painful, and lasted two weeks. In 2007 I met my husband, and although I knew the chances of pregnancy were slim, I went to see a fertility specialist. Fertility drugs supercharged my endometriosis and after a total of fourteen surgeries, I finally had a hysterectomy and removal of my uterus in 2009.” “Although it meant the end of my dream of getting pregnant, I took comfort in the belief that my endometriosis would be at an end without any estrogen to feed it. That made it even more devastating when just six months after my hysterectomy I had terrible abdominal cramping and pain and needed another laparoscopic surgery...and another one six months later. One doctor after another said, ‘I can’t do anything for you’...until I met Dr. Mangal at the Fertility Specialists of Houston.” “By the time I went to see Dr. Mangal, I was completely hopeless. My dad went with me, and at the group educational session for new patients, Dr. Mangal pinpointed every symptom and described my life exactly. It was overwhelming! My dad is a real skeptic, but as we left he said, ‘I think you’ve finally found someone who really understands.” “I told Dr. Mangal I was so tired of living with pain and only the support of my family kept me going. I’d had the hysterectomy with my previous doctor and not only did I still have the same issues as before, I also had hot flashes, painful intercourse, nightmares... and Dr. Mangal told me I probably still had endometriosis. It was so refreshing to talk with a doctor and feel like he believed me, he understood, and he knew what to do. After more tests, I went in for a surgery...and Dr. Mangal found and removed lots more endometriosis. Although this was major surgery, waking up in the recovery room I felt a thousand times better than ever before. I told my husband I didn’t hurt on the inside anymore...and that was the best feeling of my life! It has been several months since my surgery and life is wonderful for me.” “When I heard my young neighbor was scheduled for her first laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis with her Ob/Gyn, I told

her calling Dr. Mangal could change her life! No one should go through the things I suffered or to hear ‘Nothing more can be done for your pain’ and ‘You can’t have endometriosis after a hysterectomy.’ I’m living proof that you can...but thanks to Dr. Mangal, I’m also proof that you can get a new lease on life. There is hope with the right help!” Dr. R. K. Mangal Fertility Specialists of Houston 713-512-7880 www.FSHivf.com

A Vision of the Future: Ann Hodge and Katy As told to Katie Rice

W

hen Ann Hodge moved to Katy with her husband Bob thirty years ago, it was a very different landscape than it is today. She says, “A temporary job assignment brought us here, but we loved it too much to ever leave! When I had the opportunity to join the Katy Chamber of Commerce in 1999, I believed then as I believe now: Katy has incredible resources, businesses, and people in place...and the potential for even more inspiring growth! Now as Chamber President and CEO of the Katy Chamber of Commerce, I’m so proud and grateful for the opportunity to see this vision for Katy’s future unfolding.” “Katy has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a home in a Master Planned Community or something with the charm of Old Town Katy. Our strong school system is a significant draw for many families...and I speak from personal experience as well as professional knowledge. All five of our grandchildren either graduated from or currently attend the excellent

Katy ISD schools. We were the first community to receive a satellite campus for Texas Children’s Hospital. Unlike 30 years ago, our families no longer need to drive to the Texas Medical Center to get state-of-the-art health care services. We’ve got everything you need right here.” “We’re really excited about the development of Segment E of the Grand Parkway connecting I-10 and Highway 290. I think we’ll see the same growth and vitality along this corridor as we’ve seen along Beltway 8…I believe this growth will bring more high-quality jobs to Katy. Our population is well-skilled and highly educated and we are anxious to see more employment opportunities created right here in Katy where they live and enjoy time with their families.” “Katy continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. Because it’s such a wonderful place to live people are willing to commute. In my vision of the future, more and more businesses will realize that building long-term relationships with their employees is easier when companies are based in a community where those employees want to live. Katy’s got something for every family, every individual, and every business. I’m thrilled to see what our future holds!” Katy Area Chamber of Commerce 281-391-5289 (KATY) 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd Ste B206 Katy, TX 77494 www.katychamber.com

ocal moving expert and “Moving Your Memories” owner of Katy Movers Inc. Aurora Beil, grew up in a military family. Aurora says this is where she learned her high standards of ser vice. While her father was in the militar y her mother worked for a militar y moving company. Aurora and her sister would help their mom packing for the company. Aurora says, “The most important thing I learned growing up on the base was to ‘be all you can be’... and that if you wanted to be successful, things must be done in “the right way!” When Aurora went to work for a Moving company in 1983, she soon realized not everyone does things the “right way” like she was taught. Her job was to answer the phones and do nothing more. She knew that the business could be a lot more successful if it were run the “right way”...and within a few years she went from being the answering service to being the business owner. Her original plan was to buy businesses, build them up, and then sell them. She bought and sold two moving companies before she came to Katy. In 1996 she started Katy Movers. First she built the business up, but then she fell in love with Katy and , Inc.

small-town family life. She decided to keep the business and raise her three daughters right here in Katy. As a child her oldest daughter, Mary Belcik, watched her mother work hard to build a business from the ground up. She never would have thought that nearly twenty years later she would be learning how to run that very same business. After studying business for two years, Mary now continues what her mother started. Having instilled the same logic in her own daughters as the military instilled in her, Aurora has no doubt that when the time comes, her daughter Mary will be the perfect fit to run her company. Believe Change is

Possible Katie Rice

D

o you find yourself drawn to the same unhealthy relationships? Unable to lose those last 10/20/50 lbs? Stuck in a “dead-end” job that doesn’t fulfill you? If you’re not living the life you want to live, change IS possible. But why is change so hard and why does it seem so hard to maintain? Ninety per-

cent of all lottery winners return to their normal economic status in five years or less. Eighty percent (or more) of those who lose weight gain it back after two years. Why? Dr. Roxanne Schreiber says, “We all have inner beliefs about how much money we are supposed to have, how much we are supposed to weigh, how successful we are supposed to be, etc.. When our external reality (significant weight loss) doesn’t match our internal reality (My true weight is …) we are biologically driven to return to our old reality (our previous weight).” True change requires an internal adjustment, a true shift in what we believe about ourselves. When that change happens, it shows up in your brain as a change in neural pathways. That type of change truly lasts! With twenty-two years in the field of psychology (including fourteen in private practice), Dr. Schreiber, understands what works for her clients...and what doesn’t. She has created a unique approach synthesizing psychological theory with cutting-edge findings in brain science. What does this mean for you? You’ll experience life-changing effects quickly and those changes will last. All you need to do now is choose to change! If you want to get un-stuck, conquer old dysfunctional patterns, and create real change, you need support and commitment. Dr. Schreiber says, “My clients walk out of an individual session energized and excited...only to be deflated by the lack of support in their old environment. Because of that limitation all of my programs are now offered in a group format. You’ll participate in a full four-month session with six or seven people who will reinforce your changes and celebrate with you as you achieve a life that’s rewarding, exciting, and passionate. Visit my website or call to secure your space in the open programs: Attaining your Ideal Health, Creating Abundance, and You Can Have your Dream.” A free initial consultation is provided.” “I have seen over and over our capacity to create the life we want to live. My pledge is to honor, empower, and support you in accessing your full potential.”

ome plumbing problems are just that... problems. Others are full-blown mysteries. When you need to get to the bottom of a plumbing situation, local plumbers recommend choosing a PSI...Plumbing System Investigator. That’s what you’ll find at Select Plumbing, Investigation Specialists since 1992. Owner, Master Plumber, and Lead Plumbing Inspector Eddy Santizo says, “Just like doctors refer to a specialist, plumber refer complicated cases to us for hydrostatic testing. We’ll diagnose your problem, verify our results, and get your plumbing back in shape again. There’s no mystery we can’t solve!” Instead of a car for graduation, Eddy asked his parents to help him get started in the United States. He says, “I was seventeen when I left Guatemala, thanks to my parents and a sponsor in San Antonio. I worked hard in a variety of fields including construction, landscaping, and plumbing. With every choice I made, I considered whether or not it would make my parents proud. I was fortunate to have so many opportunities, and I always wanted to open my own business.” After working with several different kinds of plumbing companies––from construction to commercial to residential––Eddy opened Select Plumbing in 1992. He quickly built a reputation as the go-to company for hardto-solve plumbing problems. If you’ve had

foundation damage, trouble with your gas lines, or recurring plumbing issues, Select Plumbing will work with you (and your regular plumber) to run tests and see what’s

really going on. Eddy says, “One customer calls me ‘Inspector Gadget’...and she’s right. We do have the specialized equipment and knowledge to take the mystery out of your plumbing system. We’ll provide you with a schematic map of your system and an itemized summary of our inspection results. Our clients include homeowners, insurance adjusters, realtors, school districts, construction companies, flooring companies, restoration specialists, and businesses of all sizes.” Now as the father of three girls––one at Our Lady of the Lake University, one accepted to St. Mary’s University, and one still in preschool––Eddy says, “Now I’m working to make my daughters proud...by offering honesty, polite, professional, investigative plumbing to the families of Greater Houston. We have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and put our customers first. Gas lines, sewer lines, water lines... we’ll investigate ‘em all and close the case on your plumbing problems!” Select Plumbing 281-561-9651 WWW.MySelectPlumbing.com

oes this sound familiar? Once a married couple hits forty...they’re not the same people who got married years earlier. Dad loses his energy and passion and sits around in the recliner watching “Animal Planet.” And Mom runs on pure adrenaline and aggression, going five hundred directions at once. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. says, “When your hormones are out of balance, so are your relationships. Hormonal imbalance affects both men and women, but it isn’t an inevitability of aging. Once your hormones are in balance, you’ll enjoy life and all your relationships with energy and vigor again.” Some signs of hormonal imbalance are as plain as the nose—or the hair—on your face. When estrogen and testosterone become imbalanced, you may suffer anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, irritability, weight gain, acne, hair loss, night sweats, or reduced sex drive. Women may lose their waists, have trouble sleeping, or suffer dull skin and facial hair. Men may grow flabby breasts, have poor skin tone, and lose their libido. Do you look in the mirror (or at your spouse) and wonder what just happened? You both may be in need of hormonal balancing. After all, estrogen impacts more than fertility…it

hormone replacement therapy can save your sanity...and your relationship!” Call and setup a consultation with Dr. Campbell today…and see why so many have made Campbell’s Compounding their one-stop pharmacy. Campbell’s accepts major prescription and insurance plans, stocks all commercially available medications, and compounds medications to meet your needs. Dr. Campbell says, “Here at Campbell’s, we don’t stand at a distance…we give you our undivided attention and personal service. I believe that if you treat people with a good, ethical, Christian attitude, you’ll always have enough business. Working so closely with our patients means really remembering them as individuals. I find great satisfaction in getting to know you and your family and tailoring medications to fit your needs. I want you to enjoy your life and always be at your best!” also affects bones, brain, beauty, and body weight. Testosterone plays a similar role for men. Dr. Campbell says, “It’s a common misconception that only women suffer from hormonal imbalances. Signs of low testosterone include weight gain, depression, and lethargy. corching, searing, blistering heat’s finally hit Fort Bend, but you can beat the dog days of summer...with the right advice. We asked the owners of All Out A/C Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy how to get the most out of your A/C so you and your family can relax and chill all summer long. Chance says, “Did you know that fallen leaves, overgrown grass, or fire ants can slow down or break your air conditioner? Ants actually build mounds inside condensers and garden debris can prevent air from circulating around your outside condenser unit. Whether you need advice, repairs, or replacement, our guys will do what it takes to help you keep your cool!” Is your air conditioner choking in the heat? If you skipped your annual Spring inspection, the answer might be waiting to stare your technician in the face. An annual inspection of your cooling system may extend the life of your equipment and save you money. Bryan says, “National statistics show that over 70% of all air conditioning and compressor outages could be avoided if the equipment was regularly checked, adjusted, calibrated, and maintained by qualified technicians. You’ll get the most out of your air conditioner

Meet Your Neighborhood Dentist Sarah Warburton

T

he days when we knew the name of the neighborhood grocer and the person who delivers our mail don’t have to be gone forever. Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS says, “In this fast-paced modern world, I believe it’s more important than ever to know my patients as people. In my office, we take the time to care for your teeth...and we never forget that each mouth comes with an interesting person we’re happy to see walk through the door!” Come to a place where “everybody knows your name.” Dr. Lomonte’s been at the same location on Murphy Road in Stafford since 1982. He’s got patients of all ages, personalities, and walks of life––moms, granddads, models, businessmen, preschoolers, college kids, construction workers, type-A overscheduled folks and the laid-back types who take things slow. He says, “My staff and I really enjoy people. I believe that knowing my patients well helps them feel comfortable telling me when they’re worried about their teeth and easier for me to make recommendations based on their personality, lifestyle, and budget. Dentistry really isn’t a one-size-fits-all profession. Building a strong patient-dentist relationship not only makes it more fun to keep your appointments...it also gives you a healthier, better-looking smile!” Your dentist shouldn’t have the “get-’em-in, get’em-out” filling station mentality. Dr. Lomonte’s patients tell us he keeps to his schedule and respects their time...and also gives their spirits a lift with every visit. Dr. Lomonte says, “We offer anything you need from a simple cleaning or a little filling to implants to a full mouth reconstruction. I’ll give your mouth a thorough examination, but I’m also going to get to know you and really listen to what you tell me. When you spend five, ten, or twenty years treating your patients, you ought to consider them friends...and that’s always my goal. Professional, expert dental care that really comes from the heart!”
