sk anyone and they’ll tell you, Jim McIngvale, aka “Mattress Mack” is a workhorse, not a showhorse. He’s been walking the floor at Gallery Furniture twice a day for over thirty years...and now he’s bringing his unique blend of familyfriendly entertainment, quality furniture, same-day delivery, and great customer service to Fort Bend in a 167,000 square facility that’s sure to become a must-see local destination. Did you think furniture shopping was boring? Then you’ve obviously never been to GF with its playground, parrots, monkeys, motivational sayings on the walls, and cake, ice cream, and cookies. “Shopping for furniture should be fun for everyone,” says Mattress Mack. But it isn’t the bells and whistles that have made GF a success. He says, “Ever since day one, as a mom and pop team selling furniture on the side of the road, GF offered sameday delivery in a little red pickup truck. The other key to success is the staff on the floor. You’ll get friendly, customerfocused service that’s never pushy.” Now Mattress Mack is honored and thrilled to bring GF out to Fort Bend. He says, “GF will work hard for your business...and be a good corporate citizen by giving back to causes like mental health and education, using local vendors and hiring local folks. Work, he believes, is truly the road to salvation. In fact, some members of GF’s current staff started with GF at just eighteen years of age...and now they’re senior management. That’s the American Dream in action! The Fort Bend location will have a Community Meeting Room, a full-service restaurant, and will also have 6000 square feet for

the citizens of Brookwood Community to make and sell their crafts and artwork. Capitalism with a Cause starts with helping people find joy and purpose through the benefits of work.”

How has Mattress Mack had the energy to walk every inch of his showroom over 12,000 times, checking tags, rearranging furniture groups, and assessing the condition of each and every piece? The answer is simple...a good night’s sleep! That’s the reason they call him Mattress Mack! He says, “After so many years in the business, it’s clear what sets a really good mattress apart from a ‘so-so’ one. Lack of sleep in this modern, technical world is a crisis... and lack of sleep leads to dangerous driving, health conditions like obesity, diabe-

Mattress Mack is a showman...but he’s also the real deal. When he makes an offer--from same-day-delivery to refunding 8 millions dollars after GF’s big game promotion when Seattle won–GF follows through. Mattress Mack isn’t a fancy figurehead or spokesperson, he’s the same guy he’s been for the last 33 years, working in the same business...delighting customers every day. He says, “Once again it’s a honor to be coming out to Fort Bend...one of the best communities in the world!”

Bright Smiles

At Any Age by Katie Rice

(L-R) Caleb, Esther, Summer, Joshua, Christian, Landen, Jordan, Jessalynn, Taylor, Capri, David, Terri

“W

hile a good bite is the overall goal of orthodontics,” says Dr. David S. Bright, D.D.S. MS, “the real reward is the boost in self esteem that comes with straighter, brighter smiles. You’re never too old or too young to get the smile that you deserve!” How early can you start? Dr. Bright says, “Elementary age kids, ages 6 or 7, are the perfect age for an orthodontic screening. When permanent teeth begin to appear, orthodontic problems do too. Early treatment–‘interceptive orthodontics–can ensure better results with less trouble.” Though early screening is recommended, the most common age for orthodontic treatment is 11 to 15…when self esteem is crucial! Dr. Bright says, “I have children (a lot of them!) at home. I know how tumultuous those early teen years can be...and years ago braces weren’t exactly fashionable. But things have come a long way! We offer Invisalign, ceramic, metal, and lingual (behind the teeth) braces. We work with you to find a solution, because treatment at this age impacts a teen’s bright future.” But that’s not to say adults can’t receive orthodontic treatment. Dr. Bright says, “I myself wanted and needed braces as a kid, but I didn’t get them until I was in dental school. With today’s technology

there are so many options available for adult treatment that we can correct an adult’s smile without interfering with their work or social life. It’s never too late!” “We love making things really fun for our patients,” says Dr. Bright. “That’s why our offices in include refreshments, hot cookies and donuts, gaming systems and fish tanks.” And Dr. Bright also knows what’s not fun... traffic! “With Katy growing westward so quickly, we knew it was getting more and more difficult for some of our faithful patients to get to our office. With no orthodontist in Fulshear we decided to open a location there to better serve our westward patients. That move coincided with moving our Katy location from Kingsland to Mason Rd...in the same building we started out in 30 years ago! We are super excited about the changes and so blessed to serve this community in a larger capacity!”

rand Windows and Interiors, family-owned and operated, ties a heartfelt commitment of integrity to each client. Owners Candelario and Caron Lopez have also instilled in their children that “Yes, we provide quality advice, products and service but never pass up an opportunity to make a friend. “ Summer work turned into a perk for Lewis and Allyson Lopez who are both accomplished jazz musicians. They had the honor of playing with pianist,Tanny Busby.During the day, Mr. Tanny Busby is the Lab Director and President of Envirodyne Laboratories, Inc...but in the evening and on weekends he unleashes his creative side as producer and musician in his recording studio, on his grand piano, and as a member of two bands including SVK Vintage (Smooth Old School music). At home, he and his wife Johnnie have created the perfect oasis. Johnnie says, “My friends know that 7:30-10pm is my “T-time,” when Tanny and I relax together in our home theater room.” Tanny adds, “I like to patronize local businesses. We used Home Theater Evolutions for our electronics, and they recommended Grand Windows and Interiors for our window treatments...but that was just the beginning of our relationship with Caron and Candelario Lopez!” Tanny loves the challenge of “composing” the perfect design. He says, “ Johnnie and I really enjoy finding the perfect pieces for each room like the waterfall by the piano... perfect for a waste water specialist! We’ve chosen a contemporary style that unites

family heirlooms, custom work, and pieces from our travels in Europe, Hawaii, and throughout the US. Grand Windows did our custom plantation shutters, the curtains in the exercise room, and the blackout drapes in the theater room. Caron

really listens and understands my style. She’s found the perfect

details to pull the look together.” As a retired FBISD school counselor, Johnnie appreciates the sanctuary she and Tanny have created. She says, “We always have the next project in mind, and it’s wonderful to know we can count on Grand Windows. Caron has some exciting ideas for the kitchen...and Tanny is leaving the design of the master bedroom to me. We never worry about a thing, because Cande is an excellent installer, extremely precise. He’s even brought his son with him to learn the business. Tanny was thrilled to learn that Caron and Cande’s kids both play musical instruments. He’s hoping to get them out one night to play with his band!” When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work! That’s a philosophy Tanny and Caron share. Tanny’s been playing music since he was only four years old. He’s performed Classical Music with Van Cliburn, as well as performing with Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, and Gladys Knight, but he also loves his work in environmental analysis...consulting, creating texts and teaching materials, and helping clients from Texas (including Sienna Plantation) to Mexico to Afghanistan. He says, “Grand Windows and Interiors makes it fun and easy for Johnnie and I to design a home that expresses everything we love!” Johnnie adds, “Enjoying time together in our home is a definite perk... worth all the work we put into it!”

How to Be a Classic

(Tips for Success and Happiness from Sugar Land’s Bob Brown) AS TOLD TO STEVEN DEVADANAM

LinkedIn. Social networking. Life coaches… Believe it or not, people used to succeed in life without all that stuff. Yes, once upon a time, folks found a place, rolled up their sleeves, and went to work in hopes of creating something lasting. Sugar Land has few better examples of this kind of pioneering spirit than Robert “Bob” Brown, who arrived here in 1977 to create Sugar Land Telephone, before eventually selling, retiring, and becoming a key fixture in Fort Bend/Sugar Land philanthropy. He serves or has served on 28 boards of directors of major businesses, has advised President George H. W. Bush, and is so active in local commerce that he’s a blur in his Sugar Land offices, where he serves as chairman of the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council. But the ever-humble Brown likes to be known as “Bob,” who looks out for the elderly, mentors aspiring entrepreneurs, and is passionate about Sugar Land’s heritage and his family. “We all know Bob as a very successful businessman and community figure here,” says Ray Aguilar of Classic Chevrolet, “but he’s just a plain good person. He’s bought four cars from us, refers business to us, and looks out for our customers like they’re his own. And to me, he’s a brother. He represents all the values that we promote at Classic Chevrolet.”

So who better to share tips on a classic approach to success? We sat down with Brown, who loves to chat sports, some of his favorite cars (there’s the ’36 Plymouth, the ’49 Ford, the ’53 Oldsmobile, and the mean 12-cylinder, ’58 Packard) and his wife Carole, and his two daughters, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. And he agreed to share a few tips on how a classic approach can make for a happy and successful life: >>>>>>

>>>>>> Want a successful marriage? Have a plan, and stick to it: When we were young – really young – my wife and I sat down and wrote down all our goals. I was 18 years old, she was 16, but we had specific goals. I wanted to retire at 55 years old. We wanted three children. We wrote down a goal for every year of our marriage. And do you know, although we were only able to have two children, whom we are so thankful for, we achieved every goal for every year of our marriage. This year, we will have been married for 60 years. It’s all about being committed to each other, and being committed to the plan for your lives.

The key to happiness is to give back: I learned at a very young age: If you earn a wage or make something somewhere, then that’s the place you give back. When I was seven years old, my grandmother took me to the pharmacy, and volunteered me to work there. Of course, I didn’t understand at the time, but what she was teaching me is that you always have to give back. Fortunately, there’s a lot more charity work being done now than when I started out. Most people don’t know: There are 1,700 charities here in Sugar Land. So there’s no reason you can’t get involved. If you put yourself out there and show up for others, it comes back to you, I’m proof of that.

Success means creating successful relationships: When we first got here, it was every man for himself and the good ol’ boy system. I worked hard to make things fair for everybody and do things the right way. The oil crash in the ’80s taught us to care about each other. You’ve got to treat the guy worth $50 million the same way you treat the guy worth five bucks. You talk to people and really get to know them. Just walk up, introduce yourself, and get to know them and what they’re about. And you’ve got to be good to people, even if they don’t trust you or understand why you’re being good to them. One day, they will.

’s of Healthy

Kids’

Teeth by Amy Sharp

“S

chool is back in session and I firmly believe in the importance of education,” says Fort Bend ISD Foundation Board of Director and dentist at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, Dr. Faisal Khan. “I know as parents we put a lot of effort into developing the minds of our little humans. It’s also really important to take care of those little teeth...after all, they’re only one set of baby and ‘big’ teeth” A - American Dental Association (ADA) Dr Khan says, “The American Dental Association recommends that parents bring their kids in for a first check up around one year old. Kids that young rarely have anything wrong, so it’s just fun all around. At that age I really spend more time educating the parents about children’s teeth…and for the child, the office and staff become a familiar environment, and that alleviates a lot of what I call ‘crazy screaming dentistry.’” B - Brushing and Flossing Dr. Khan says, “Children’s teeth should be brushed at least twice per day using a soft bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Parents should help them until about age seven or until your child is capable of reaching all areas of the mouth. For

babies, remember to rub the gum area with a clean, damp cloth after each feeding. Wherever two teeth are adjacent to each other, kids are at risk for between teeth cavities. I know its hard to teach children to floss...but we have tips on making flossing fun!” C - Care Dr. Khan says, “With kids, we are mostly talking about preventive care. That includes preventive care in our office and at home. Here at the office we do full mouth examinations and look for signs of early decay, monitor orthodontic concerns, and track jaw and tooth development. At home, in addition to brushing and flossing, your child should be receiving a nourishing, well balanced diet that’s low in sugar. Prolonged use of pacifiers and sippy cups or extended thumb sucking can also cause oral developmental issues. Our office is here to help parents and kids commit to healthy habits for a life of happy, healthy smiles!” Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS 832-222-TOTS (8687) 7830 W. The team at All Out Offroad will step up with everything you need to stand out at work or while you play. From a grill guard to an “All Out” custom modification, they’ll get you rollin’ with the automotive accessories of your dreams at any of their locations in Richmond, Stafford, or Pearland. Looking cool is one thing, but staying cool is another. Did you know that All Out offers multiple lines of 3M window tinting to help keep your vehicle cool in the summer? They also offer different brands of remote start systems, so you don’t have to risk third degree burn getting into your vehicle. That’s seriously cool! Once you get home...are you still cool or have you hit a “hot spot?” Bryan, aka Mr. A/C says, “We believe in ‘breaking the ice’ with our customers, giving you a clear understanding of what’s going on with your A/C, and suggesting a range of options depending on your timeline and budget. In addition to speedy fullsystem replacements, we also offer routine maintenance to extend the life of your system, repairs to keep things running, and pride ourselves on trouble-shooting any of your comfort issues.” When the heat is on...keep a cool head and call Mr. A/C. Bryan says, “We specialize in upgrading systems to improve the efficiency and cooling power of your A/C system. Whether inefficient duct work is creating ‘hot zones,’ your system’s outdated, or

ow many of the things that you do for your health do you actually enjoy? Swallowing a multivitamin, passing on a piece of chocolate cake, or suffering through a grueling workout aren’t the only things the doctor recommends. You can take a mini-vacay that will improve your circulation, lower your blood pressure, improve your range of movement and flexibility and reduce stress. In fact, if you haven’t been visiting Therapeutic Thai Massage as a treat...consider it a “must” for your health! Why doesn’t every “good for you” place have soothing fountains, fragrant tea, and the scent of jasmine and lemongrass? Therapeutic Thai Massage offers several types of massage, but you’ll get unique health benefits from Thai Massage. Formally trained in both Thailand and Texas, licensed massage therapist Mona owns Therapeutic Thai Massage with her husband Theo. She says, “We often call Thai Massage ‘Thai Yoga Massage,’ because it improves balance and circulation like yoga does. Instead of lying in one position throughout your session, our masseuses will help you stretch and will apply acupressure (just the right amount!) along the energy lines of your body. This massage will balance your energy and improve circulation to help with lymphatic drainage and increased blood to your heart and digestive areas. In traditional Thai massage there are more than 400 positions, but our therapists understand body mechanics and choose the right positions for your issues...so you’ll always be comfortable.” Taking a vacation can decrease your stress and dramatically improve your physical and mental health...but you don’t have to wait until next summer, renew your passport, or figure out what to do with the kids! “Fly away” to Therapeutic Thai Massage any time! Leave your shoes by the door, slip into a pair of slippers, and enjoy a mini-trip to Thailand. Theo says, “Try our Thai Combination Massage and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy, Hot Stone Massage, and Thai Massage. If you want to make Thai Massage a regular part of your healthy routine, we do offer packages and annual memberships...but we’ll never pressure you about them. Acupressure is the only pressure we practice!”
