It’s a breeze for you to get some of that same “cool” for yourself at All Out Offroad and All Out A/C. When it’s so hot on the roads, your tires might melt...visit your nearest All Out Offroad, serving Fort Bend since 1991. Their sales staff not only offers fantastic customer service but also builds great relationships...and that sets these guys apart. You’ve seen the monster trucks driving around town (check out their online gallery of custom trucks and custom cars!) but that’s not everything All Out Offroad is capable of doing! Looking cool is one thing, but staying cool is another. Did you know that All Out offers multiple lines of 3M window tinting to help keep your vehicle cool in the summer? They also offer different brands of remote start systems, so you don’t have to risk third degree burn getting into your vehicle. That’s seriously cool! Once you get home...are you still cool or have you hit a “hot spot?” Bryan, aka Mr. A/C says, “We believe in ‘breaking the ice’ with our customers, giving you a clear understanding of what’s going on with your A/C, and suggesting a range of options depending on your timeline and budget. In addition to speedy fullsystem replacements, we also offer routine maintenance to extend the life of your system, repairs to keep things running, and pride ourselves on trouble-shooting any of your comfort issues.” When the heat is on...keep a cool head and call Mr. A/C. Bryan says, “We specialize in upgrading systems to improve the efficiency and cooling power of your A/C system. Whether inefficient duct work is creating ‘hot zones,’ your system’s outdated, or

Taking Care of Your Health Daniel’s Story by Sarah Warburton

Daniel Mackinaw with is darling daughter Alison and their fuzzy pals Dusty & Kiko

Y

ou know those health concerns you’re always putting on the back burner? Daniel Mackinaw says, “I had a knot on the back of my calf that never really bothered me physically, but it made me a little self conscious. About a year ago or so I decided it was time to take better care of myself. When I started looking for a vein specialist, I remembered seeing Dr. Baltazar in UpClose and gave him a call. During the consultation, he said that although the lump wasn’t a problem now...it could lead to problems later.” “Everything I’d read about Dr. Baltazar in the magazine turned out to be true. He’s really ultra-smart and concerned about your well-being. I have lupus, and he explained in detail the concerns he had about my condition and the likelihood of clotting. In fact, he had me stop by the office once or twice so he could monitor things via ultrasound. I’m a self-pay patient, and he took the time to negotiate the best rate for me with the hospital. He didn’t have to do that...but he did! Before he went out of town, he made time to see me...and even gave me his personal number in case I had any problems. You just don’t see that kind of personal attention anymore!” “I made an appointment to get the vein lasered...and the procedure itself took maybe ten minutes! Really the only painful part was getting the anesthetic in the back

of my calf before Dr. Baltazar lasered the vein. Other than wearing compression stockings, there was nothing I had to worry about afterwards, either. Dr. Baltazar’s really conscientious...and I didn’t have a single problem with the procedure or afterwards. Everyone at his office--Sonia and Kelsey--are so nice. He’s got a great team!” “Now the lump is gone and you can’t actually even see where it was...there’s no scar! In fact, if I didn’t tell people about it, they’d never know. That’s how I came to find out a neighbor of mine had both of his legs done by Dr. Baltazar and was really happy with him. I’ve recommended Dr. Baltazar again and again...he’s really great!” “Daniel was smart to be proactive about the health of his veins,” says Board-certified Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar. “The National Institute of Health estimates that 60% of all men and women suffer from some sort of vein disorder. Even men in their twenties may suffer from varicose veins...and it’s important to seek treatment. Varicose veins aren’t just a cosmetic issue, they’re a vascular health issue and can lead to life-threatening venous diseases like deep venous thrombosis and venous stasis ulcers. If you’ve got a vein that’s worrying you, call my office for an appointment. I’ll assess your situation and explain your full range of options. If you don’t need treatment, I’ll be happy to tell you, because my professional success is based upon the quality of care I offer each and every patient... not the quantity of veins I treat!”

Womanhood GENEVIEVE’S STORY

“M

y whole life I’ve struggled with my weight,” says Genevieve Davis. “Even though I’m a bubbly, happy person, I got tired of living with excess pounds. In November of 2013 I flew to Tijuana and had weight loss surgery. After that, I was one hundred pounds lighter...but I had lots of excess skin and my shape still wasn’t what I wanted. I worked out everyday, but that didn’t change a thing. I even did a consultation and got an estimate on a tummy tuck in Beaumont, but I knew I needed something extra. Finally I googled “tummy tuck” and “Houston” and Lipotuck™ came up online. I could tell just from the word it must be a combination “tummy tuck” and “liposuction” and I got excited. I visited the website for Avante Plastic Surgery and read all the information.” “In the “Before and After” pictures at www.lipotuck.com I even found a woman with a shape close to mine! I liked her results so much I decided to schedule a consultation to find out more. During my initial assessment I was very impressed

Before

After

with the staff, the office, and everyone I met. Dr. Ahmadi made me feel so comfortable. I was confident that he knew what he was talking about. As a hairdresser, when someone comes in for a consultation, I always envision the final look...and that helps me make suggestions. If they choose to take my direction, they’ll get the ultimate results. If not, they’ll get the look they asked for...but they’ll never know what the beautiful possibilities could have been. I didn’t know how to imagine what my results from Lipotuck™ would be, but I trusted Dr. Ahmadi when he said he could give me the shape I wanted.” “Never in my wildest dreams did I think Dr. Ahmadi could create the shape I have now! He took anything that was disproportionate or lumpy and smoothed it out, so I have a curvy silhouette. My husband says I have a perfect heartshaped backside. Dr. Ahmadi is an absolute artist. He gave me a full-body lift so that it’s smooth across my back where my bra strap goes, along my hips, everywhere. My clothes hang better and I feel sultry and confident being naked. I’m thrilled to have a tiny waist and an hourglass figure like Marilyn Monroe. Dr. Ahmadi gave me back my womanhood!” “I tell everyone about Dr. Ahmadi. One girlfriend was telling me about a place she saw where a tummy tuck was cheaper... and I told her, “You can’t get the Lipotuck™ cheaper...and you don’t want a cheap surgery!” Dr. Ahmadi is professional, does beautiful work...and he really cares about your health. He made sure I had complete instructions for my recovery before the procedure. Everything went well and I was back to work, cutting hair full time, even sooner than I expected! I want Dr. Ahmadi to know that I will always work out and eat well... because I want to keep this beautiful body forever!”

Top Five Signs You Need Alan’s Plumbing By Joelie Key-Tissot

H

ow do you know when a plumbing problem is really a problem for a professional, licensed plumber? We asked Alan’s Plumbing, our local plumbing experts, for the top five reasons to make the call: (5) Toilet trouble. Does yours run all the time or take forever to refill? Does it have a weak flush, not flush at all or does it overflow? These symptoms can mean your toilet is defective or a drain is clogged. A plunger can only do so much before it’s time to call Alan’s Plumbing. (4) Faucets. Do you have any faucets that are dripping or just not working well? Almost all faucets come with lifetime warranties through the manufacturer. Take a quick

phone snapshot of your faucet and send it to Alan’s Plumbing to identify your faucet brand and get started on getting a replacement. (3) High water. Does the water rise above your ankles when you shower? Does the sink fill up while you’re brushing your teeth? Your pipes could have a stoppage or a hair or grease buildup and probably need a good clean out. (2) Hot water. Is your hot water flow inconsistent? Is there rust on or around your water heater’s storage tank? How old is your water heater? It may be time for a replacement. Sediment build-up in the tank can cause that banging noise you hear

when you run your hot water. It’s an annoyance and a sign of an aging water heater.

And, perhaps the most important... (1) LEAKS. Do you have wet spots under your sinks, in crawl spaces or attic? Have you seen water stains on your ceilings or walls? Is there water on the floor around your toilet tank? Do you see or smell mold under pipes or valves? Does your water meter keep running even when you have no water running in your house? These may be signs of leaks. Leaks in fixtures, pipes, valves, toilets and water heaters can be repaired inexpensively before they lead to a pricey replacement or astronomical water bill. If you notice any of these signs, call a plumber you can trust. Alan’s Plumbing is a family-run business built on professionalism, experience and a strong work ethic. Alan Burkhalter, his three sons—Beau, Luke and Jake—Alan’s brother Chris and team member Kyle are all more than just plumbers. They are your neighbors. Call 281-2611064 and Jennifer, Alan’s wife and mother of Beau, Luke, and Jake, will talk you through shutting off your water (if needed) and will get you scheduled for service. Remember, help is only a phone call away! Alan’s Plumbing

Next Stop...St. Michael’s!

F

Emergencies Happen. Seconds Count. Quality Matters.

reestanding ERs and Urgent Care facilities are popping up all over our community...but it’s important to remember that they’re not all created equal. If you choose an urgent care center because you’re worried about the wait at your local emergency room, you may not get the help you actually need! Many urgent care centers have limited hours and have a physician on-call, rather than on-site. All day, every day St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms offers everything you’d find in a “traditional” ER--physicians trained in emergency medicine, X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, an on-site diagnostic lab, nine exam rooms (including pediatric themed rooms, a sports room, and a Harley-Davidson room!), a treatment suite for observation, and a comfortable waiting room...without a wait! So with every other ER on the corner promising to help you in 15 minutes, why do patients choose St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms over and over again? For starters, it’s rare to wait even a few seconds for treatment at this amazing ER! As Sugar Land’s very first free-standing twenty-four hour emergency room, St. Michael’s has perfected patient care and built long-lasting relationships with the medical resources in our community. Co-founder Dr. Shannon Orsak says, “Since we’re not affiliated with one single hospital, if you need long-term treatment we can choose the best doctor and the most appropriate facility for you. We’ve got agreements with nearby hospitals to get you priority care...without the wait!” In an emergency, you have the right to choose the emergency room that will offer you the best care...and by law your insurance

must pay in-network benefits whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” Choose St. Michael’s, the ER with a tradition of care and a history of service to our community. After graduating from the only emergency medicine school in Houston, Dr. Orsak worked at local hospitals including Memorial Hermann SW, St. Luke’s and West Houston Hospital where he was Assistant Medical Director. He says, “My brother, Brian and I created St. Michael’s to combine medical efficiency and patient comfort... and we named it St. Michael’s after the patron saint of emergency medicine. We believe St. Michael’s offers the very best care...the kind we want for our own family!” When seconds count, ask yourself...are you going to get better sitting around a waiting room? By law you’re entitled to concierge emergency room treatment at the same price you’d pay to sit around an impersonal ER for hours or some venture-capital-owned freestanding ER for thirty minutes. Dr. Orsak says, “St. Michael’s is one of the only fully-accredited ER facilities with JCAHO, ACR, and CLIA certifications. We are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. We’re proud to have been the first free-standing ER in Sugar Land...and we’re always here for you and your family!” At this time, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare do not participate with free-standing ER’s.

hen you’re planning a major remodel of your entire house, every penny matters. Paul and Jonee Barnett of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing say, “We’ve always known that refinishing your countertops, tub, sinks, showers and tiles saves time and money... without sacrificing style. We were thrilled to get this testimonial from Marissa Larson confirming the difference our Miracle Method can make!”

Jonee and Paul Barnett

Marissa writes: “My fiance and I just recently purchased a 1991 custom Perry home that had not been updated since it was built. Before moving in, we elected to have a complete remodel of the house from the ceiling to base boards and everything in between. We knew it was going to be a large project and were watching our budget very carefully.” “One of our major concerns was the cost to replace the dual sink, cream-colored, cultured marble countertops in both the master bath and secondary bath. Also, we needed a regrouting of both the master shower and secondary bathtub surround. However; the biggest financial concern was replacing 150 square feet of grey flat edge laminate countertops with a granite countertop. Our contractor recommended Miracle Method. After seeing what they could do online, we were very interested in what they could do for us.”

“I was amazed as are all our family and friends who witnessed the transformation in our bathrooms and kitchen. The technicians took care to protect all the paint work on the walls and cabinets, the new tile flooring, the new travertine backsplash, and the new fixtures from the overspray. They performed all the work in a timely manner and left the house clean. The total cost for all the work was less than the cost to just replace the kitchen counter would have been. Unless you knew that the counter had been refinished... it’s hard to believe it’s not solid surface! And the bullnose edge sold me altogether!” “I highly recommend Miracle Method, Jonee and her crew. They are absolutely amazing and definitely Miracle workers. I proudly share my before and after pictures of the amazing transformation in our bathrooms and kitchen. Many thanks and smiles!!”

Enjoying Autumn

It’s Hard To Stop A Trane

to the Fullest

he sky darkens early. There’s a chill in the air. Leaves turn golden and feather down from the trees. Time for favorite sweaters, cardigans, scarves and gloves. Ah, September. In Maine, maybe. Record temps for September in the Houston area hover around 99ºF. In the past decade, temperatures have burst into triple digits. Autumn in Sugar Land is still A/C season and that can be taxing on your back-to-school budget. Take this advice from local A/C expert, Brian Jackson: Shun the Sun. Keep the sun out by keeping blinds, shades and curtains closed from noon to dusk. Circulate. Keep the air moving by opening interior doors and vents and using energy-efficient ceiling fans which cost under $.50 a day to run. Clean and Clear. Keep filters changed at least monthly. Keep outdoor units clear of plants and debris. Don’t Cool an Empty Home. Keep your thermostat around 78ºF when you’re home and raise it to 82ºF when you’re not. Pay Attention. If you notice decreased air flow, strange noises or odors, the A/C running constantly to keep up, the A/C breaker tripping, ice on your AC or piping or your outdoor fan won’t come on, you need to get your A/C checked and serviced. Preventive Maintenance. Have your A/C serviced to prevent unexpected breakdowns and increase the efficiency of the system

Upgrade. Remember that if your A/C unit is more than 10 years old, it may be time to purchase a new unit. The Trane XL20i is designed to minimize energy costs and maximize efficiency by running at a lowering output capacity and operating speed to only what is needed. According to Brian Jackson of Jackson Air & Heat, the cutting edge TruComfort™ technology used in the XL20i makes it “the quietest A/C on the market…great at removing humidity and you can control the system any where with the free app on your smart phone or computer!” Because it’s so efficient, Brian says, “You’ll be spending less every time it comes on.” Energy-efficient, quiet and cool! “It’s really a win-win situation!” And Brian knows his stuff. Jackson Air and Heat, Inc., with 33 years of experience, is the oldest Trane Comfort Specialist in Sugar Land. re you a world-class procrastinator? For many people, if procrastination were a competitive event, they could win, place and show. There is one thing, though, that you should never put off: using your dental benefits. Unfortunately, your unused benefits don’t roll over to 2015. By not visiting your dentist before the end of the year, you are essentially tossing your money into a smoldering pit and then setting it on fire. Does that sound like something any rational soul might do? “Millions of people every year dutifully pay their dental premiums, but then let them go to waste,” says Stafford dentist Dr. Thomas Lomonte.”It’s a shame, and not just from the money perspective. The longer you wait to get even something routine like a teeth cleaning done, you are setting yourself up for more expensive problems down the line. So chances are, if you’ve had some work done this year, you’ve already met your deductible. What most people don’t realize is the deductible resets after the first of the year. Even health flexible savings account money operates under the ‘fly now or forget

it’ principle.” Dr. Lomonte, a Beaumont native, has been creating Texas size smiles for twenty-eight years. Besides his stellar reputation for virtually pain-free dentistry and a warm, personable chair-side manner, he is a top specialist in veneers, crowns, bridges, and dental implants. “Losing teeth can be a traumatic experience for most folks,” Dr. Lomonte explains. “That’s why it’s important to know dental implants are a solution. When you lose a tooth, bone or soft tissue aren’t necessary, so they start to recede. Dental implants will prevent this from happening, providing a root to secure your jawbone and gum tissue. Missing teeth can be replaced with new, durable teeth...no shifting or embarrassment to worry about! We can restore your youth, vitality, and most of all, your beautiful smile.” Don’t wait until your benefits run out. Don’t stick your hand out the car window and let those lovely pieces of paper fly away. Call now to make your appointment with a dentist who knows the value of you.

Don’t encourage pests, reptiles and rodents...get your trees trimmed today! Storm season is upon us...and the best way to prevent damage is to get your trees trimmed today. A falling branch can cause serious damage to the rest of the tree, your roof, your car, your neighbor’s property. Cammy says, “We’ve had so much rain that our trees are quite heavy right now...and more susceptible to storm damage. Trimming will allow the wind to blow through the tree, reducing the risk of tree damage. Trimming also allows the sunlight to get through to the grass...many people lose their grass due to thick trees. Trees should be trimmed every two to three years, by Becca Bragg depending on weather conditions, so they can remain a beautiful asset to your property. We carry a million dollars in liability insurance, and our guys use safety equipment, ropes and harnesses. Our team will remove dangerous branches safely...to protect your investments!” Cammy Simpson says, “My sons Nicholas and Brandon head the work crews and our team has been with us for years and years! If you see those red Simpson’s Tree Service trucks around town, give them a wave...and hold onto our number. Don’t wait to give us a call!”

Cammy Simpson of Simpson’s Tree Service says, “Call us, and we’ll send out a team to thin, trim and shape your trees. Trimming will prevent storm damage and create beautiful, healthy trees that add to your property value.” “At Simpson’s, we have over twenty years experience in making trees beautiful and healthy. Trimming in the fall lightens the load on the root system and encourages spring growth. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Changing Lives

W

hen Steve Harris was just a kid, his father had been living with ever-worsening pain for years. Steve says, “He went to the top three medical doctors in Houston, and eventually he had tried twenty-two medications...and then he went to a chiropractor. That chiropractor found a pinched nerve in my dad’s upper back from a car accident he’d been in when he was only nineteen...and after three months of treatment the pain was gone! Since ninth grade, there was nothing else on earth I wanted to do with my life. Now after thirty-eight years as a chiropractor, I’m blessed to say I’ve helped free men, women, kids and even other chiropractors from living in pain!” When pain is shooting down your arm or leg, through your neck or into your temples, it’s hard to believe it could all be traced back to your spine. Dr. Harris says, “Most back pain and many other conditions can be traced to a pinched nerve in your spine. Whether it’s a long ago injury from a car accident, a childhood fall off a bed or out of a tree, a college sports injury, or even a recent attempt to pick up a grandchild or move a piece of furniture, I have a variety of ways to treat your back and neck with the goal of relieving your pain long term. In fact, several patients have come in with an MRI to show herniated discs in their spine...and after their treatment at the Sugar Land Health Center, they got another MRI that showed

One patient said, “‘My radiologist told me he’d never seen anything like this before...that it just wasn’t possible!’ But it is possible... when you treat the underlying problem with the right chiropractic techniques.” Put your pain in the hands of experience...Dr. Harris has advanced chiropractic techniques and Triton DTS decompression tables to relieve the pressure on your spine. In fact, he even taught courses to help other chiropractors use these tables in the best way to relieve a patient’s pain. Dr. Harris also practices soft tissue techniques used by only 150 people anywhere in the world and uses an oscillator and a laser to restore circulation, break down scar tissue,

Joshua’s SuperStubborn

“M

Tooth

ost children lose their first tooth between ages five and six,” says Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry, “but some teeth are super-stubborn! That’s what happened to my friend, seven-year-old Joshua.” Joshua’s dad, Richard Harrell, says, “We met Dr. Sanchez and her husband through a Houston Texans football team. When I heard that she was a pediatric dentist, I made an appointment. Joshua and his younger sister absolutely fell in love with her office...they get excited about going. They know where all the toys and games are and when they’ll get their new toothbrushes or tokens. Dr. Sanchez has had to pull three of his teeth, and he loves her! I’ll recommend them to anyone...because how often do people--much less kids--think its fun to go to the dentist?” What makes Little People’s Dentistry so awesome? Joshua says, “When you wait, you can see the TV and play and watch the fish swim in the tank. I like the crazy mirror that makes me look like a superhero. When she’s checking my teeth I can see the same show on TV that was in the waiting room. I like the smell of the bubblegum.” “My tooth was wiggly and I wanted it to come out. Daddy took me to Dr. Sanchez and I was excited.

When she pulls a tooth you get four tokens! I always choose a ball from the vending machine. I liked seeing my teeth on the x-ray. Dr. Sanchez helped three of my wiggly teeth come out. I get a dollar for each one from the tooth fairy.” Are your kids excited about seeing the dentist? Dr. Sanchez says, “ We have a lot of fun, even when we’re taking a digital x-ray to make sure everything’s OK. Once in a while a wiggly tooth is so loose that my magic toothbrush does the trick. Other times I’ll whisk ‘magic gauze’ over your wiggly tooth and the next thing you know… it’s out! The tooth fairy doesn’t care whether your tooth falls out on its own or I give it a little help...she’s happy as long as it’s healthy and strong!” Joshua wants to make sure you know: “One more thing...it’s so cool there!”

It Takes a Village...

by Amy Sharp

S

eeking therapy for a loved one may be one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make. You want to get it right...and you want to see progress! Dana and Jason Johnson, co-founders of Speech Therapy Unlimited in Sugar Land, have built a village of speech therapists. Dana says, “We have a large and diverse team. That gives us the luxury of considering skill sets, strengths, gender, and personality when fitting a client with a therapist. And we know the client/patient relationship must be continually evaluated and forward moving . You never want to see stagnation. That’s why Jason and I regularly meet with our team to review cases and evaluate progress. If something isn’t working, it is changed...and we have the entire team present to bounce ideas around and suggest a range of solutions. You might be working with one therapist, but you have the braintrust of the entire team!” And this team is an educated village. Jason says, “Continuing education is important. We host in-office workshops so that our therapists can advance their training and keep abreast of new developments. From drills and flashcards, to the latest apps and technology, we want every tool at our disposal to provide the best possible therapy to our clients. And of course there is fun. We brainstorm something new, fresh and exciting each month. We’ve had ‘Music Month’ and we just wrapped up ‘August Art Festival,’ where our clients improved speech and language while celebrating their unique creativity!”

And an added bonus to having a large team on staff? No wait list! Dana says, “We know when you’ve made the decision to pursue therapy, you want to start now! And our team is ready. There’s no wait list, but you do have to move quickly to get your pick of appointment times. Call us for an assessment and we’ll get you started right away. I’m confident we will find the perfect client/therapist match for you or your loved one. We would love to have you in our village!” Speech Therapy Unlimited, PLLC most major insurance accepted No Headaches, No Unreasonable Terms, Just Great Speech Therapists! 281-746-3053 12808 West Airport Blvd. Ste 332, Sugar Land, TX 77498 www.speechtherapyunlimited.com

ow many of the things that you do for your health do you actually enjoy? Swallowing a multivitamin, passing on a piece of chocolate cake, or suffering through a grueling workout aren’t the only things the doctor recommends. You can take a mini-vacay that will improve your circulation, lower your blood pressure, improve your range of movement and flexibility and reduce stress. In fact, if you haven’t been visiting Therapeutic Thai Massage as a treat...consider it a “must” for your health! Why doesn’t every “good for you” place have soothing fountains, fragrant tea, and the scent of jasmine and lemongrass? Therapeutic Thai Massage offers several types of massage, but you’ll get unique health benefits from Thai Massage. Formally trained in both Thailand and Texas, licensed massage therapist Mona owns Therapeutic Thai Massage with her husband Theo. She says, “We often call Thai Massage ‘Thai Yoga Massage,’ because it improves balance and circulation like yoga does. Instead of lying in one position throughout your session, our masseuses will help you stretch and will apply acupressure (just the right amount!) along the energy lines of your body. This massage will balance your energy and improve circulation to help with lymphatic drainage and increased blood to your heart and digestive areas. In traditional Thai massage there are more than 400 positions, but our therapists understand body mechanics and choose the right positions for your issues...so you’ll always be comfortable.” Taking a vacation can decrease your stress and dramatically improve your physical and mental health...but you don’t have to wait until next summer, renew your passport, or figure out what to do with the kids! “Fly away” to Therapeutic Thai Massage any time! Leave your shoes by the door, slip into a pair of slippers, and enjoy a mini-trip to Thailand. Theo says, “Try our Thai Combination Massage and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy, Hot Stone Massage, and Thai Massage. If you want to make Thai Massage a regular part of your healthy routine, we do offer packages and annual memberships...but we’ll never pressure you about them. Acupressure is the only pressure we practice!”

What’s a Leonetti? The Godfather of Graphics Being from an Italian family myself, I know all too well that what you often have is bigger than life characters. I had an Uncle Pinky, (meaning he was the youngest of 10 children), Uncle Chino (meaning he had curly hair ), Uncle Millo (meaning unknown), or the one that Italians call The Godfather. Sometimes you only know a person by their name and their reputation. Don Leonetti’s wife, Jennifer, had called me at one point to do an article on him for the successful men in business as a surprise to him. I deeply regret we did not ever connect to get that accomplished. Now he’s not with us anymore. Somehow our paths did not cross, but he reached out to many young people in our community...and that made a deep impression on me. You see, I was telling some college kids about the death of a prominent figure in our community, a Mr Leonetti who owns a graphics company. At that point they looked at me in disbelief, shaking their heads, and said, “What? No, wait...wait! You’re not talking about Don are you?” They knew him from an organization called Young Life. As Young Life leaders, Don and his wife Jennifer had logged many hours with kids — where they are, as they are. They listened to their stories and learned what was important to them, because this amazing couple genuinely cared about their joys, triumphs, heartaches and setbacks. As a parent, I know many youth in this community need a place to hang out and be safe, a place where they can build a lovefilled, life-long relationships with others as well as God. I was always surprised and pleased to hear my son at fifteen, sixteen, and

seventeen years old, ask, “Can I go to Young Life with my friends?” Especially when he turned an age that he could drive himself anywhere to do anything...knowing he was going to a church-based, value-centered activity filled me with peace. A name is more than the word you call somebody or the name of a business. Leonetti is a name that means generosity, selflessness, and love. I would like to take this opportunity to ask the community to continue to support the Leonetti family in their business. They not only did business here but gave back in spades. We are fortunate

to have Leonetti Graphics and the Leonetti family in our community...and the best way to show our appreciation is by supporting them through this difficult time. I know personally what it takes to build a business and keep it going. While the loss is so great we don’t want their family to lose what they built through hard work, sweat and tears too. The difference they selflessly made in the lives of young people and our community has made a brighter future for us all. So for that I would like to say thank you. ~ Gina Pizzini, Publisher

So stop on by Leonetti Graphics in Missouri City. Don’s sister Jo Ann Leonetti who has worked side by side with her brother is their to take care of you. Let’s show our support. 3635 Glenn Lakes Ln, Missouri City, TX 77459 ~ (281) 499-4959

Insulin could be the underlying cause. “Insulin increases your storage of fat at a cellular level,” says Dr. T, “and can lead to swings in blood sugar and mood. Step one is exercise--specifically muscle building and strength training. Then both men and women can benefit from hormone balancing to reduce insulin resistance...especially when their thyroid hormones are properly balanced with NatureThyroid and Iodine. We can also lower your insulin volume through

proper dieting with three meals and two snacks a day for a proper protein/carb ratio. Finally, we offer nutritional support, so you’ll have cellular efficiency. By addressing insulin in these four ways–exercise, hormones, diet, and nutritional support--you’ll enjoy weight loss...and a healthier, more energetic life!” Need help with your confidence or your sex drive? ho can give you a “grand-new look” at a family-friendly price? The “Cande Man Can.” Zip down the Grand Parkway or FM 723 to Grand Windows and Interiors and visit Candelario Lopez and his wife, designer Caron Lopez. Caron says, “Cande’s instrumental to the success of our business because everything he does, he does to perfection. I can design with confidence, knowing Cande’s a problem-solver who’ll make it all work. We’re a perfect match!” When you go to Grand Windows and Interiors, you’ll get quality materials, custom-made to your windows, at a competitive price. Caron says, “We had one customer come in, clearly braced for a high price based on our website and showroom. He was amazed that we beat the cost of getting shutters from the ‘Big Box’ home improvement stores. I told him, that’s really the price...with a great guarantee and no hidden fees!” “In my life,” says Cande, “I’m focused on God and family and I’m so proud of my kids and blessed to have a profession I love that helps provide for them. We never forget that your family is on a budget too. Running an efficient, local, familyowned business means we offer home improvements you can afford. Give your home a ‘Grand’ makeover with custom window treatments, metalwork, cabinetry, upholstery, granite, tile, faux painting and more!”

Fifteen years ago Margie and Danny Meeks went in with friends to expand their hobby of antiquing into a business: Antiques Around the Corner in Rosenberg. Danny says, “We believe in familyfriendly businesses that are warm and welcoming and really add to the sense of community we have here in Fort Bend. That’s why we called Grand Windows and Interiors when we needed shutters for our own home.” Margie says, “We were extremely impressed with their honesty, personal attention and excellent work. They gave great advice and now we get so many compliments!” Danny adds, “We had the shutters done on every window, even the unusuallyshaped garage window. Grand Windows gave us a good product at a reasonable price...with the peace of mind that comes from choosing a company that will stand behind their work! I grew up right here...and I think people who come from all over the world visit Rosenberg and see in it the same small towns where they grew up. Last year the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County raised over $18,000 for Literacy in the 4th Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. Through generous contributions from our community and the dedication of students and their tutors, the Literacy Council of Fort Bend is proud to announce that in 2013: 99% of ESL students’ test scores improved and 46% of those advanced to a higher proficiency level; 12 students became US citizens through Citizenship Classes; and 20 GED students reported they had obtained their GED. Participate in the mission of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend...and you too can BEE a champion of literacy! Are you still stung by the memory of grade school spelling defeats? Don’t miss the chance to earn the B-R-A-G-G-A-D-O-C-I-O-S rights as one of the “Best Grown-Up Spellers in Fort Bend County.” Gather together two more of your friends and enter a team of three, Bee a Word Sponsor, sponsor a letter of the Alphabet, or Bee a Spectator. Kelli Metzenthin, the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend, says, “We have a range of sponsorship opportunities as well as ‘Bee Team Enhancers’ like Spell-Agains, Mulligans, and Stingers (passing a hard word to another team) that will add extra zing to the competition.” At UpClose we’re thrilled to be sponsoring the BUZZword L-I-T-E-R-A-C-Y...and we can’t wait for this year’s Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee on September 18th. Whether you’ve got an eager band student or a kid who’d love some after-school lessons, swing by the Fort Bend Music Center, your one-stopshop for pianos, music lessons, band instruments, repairs...and more! “Challenging Disabilities, Changing Lives”

T

hat’s the motto of the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation, sponsor of this month’s National Rehabilitation Awareness Celebration (Rehab Week). And our neighbors at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Sugar Land have reason to celebrate! “Rehabilitation is all we do, “ says Nick Hardin, CEO of HealthSouth, “We have an amazing, state of the art, 50 bed in-patient hospital that provides a wide range of physical rehabilitation services, occupational therapy, neurological services, a vast network of highly-skilled, independent private practice physicians and HealthSouth therapists and nurses, and the most innovative equipment and rehabilitation technology available. Our patients enjoy flat screen televisions, telephones and wireless internet capabilities.” “But what I’m most proud of,” continues Nick, “is our staff and their commitment to quality care. Comfort, professionalism and respect...those are our cornerstones of care. It doesn’t matter if a patient is interacting with a one of our doctors or a member of our housekeeping staff, every patient and every visi-

tor here can expect to receive comfort, professionalism and respect throughout their experience.” And the effort of the team has not gone unnoticed. HealthSouth Sugarland holds a certification with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare (JCAHO) for Disease Specific Accreditation for Stroke and Hip Fractures. The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standardssetting and accrediting body in health care, and Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The on-site review includes assessments of how clinical outcomes and performance measures are used to find opportunities for improved care, assessment of an organization’s leadership commitment to improvement and the way in which patients are educated with respect to self-management. Nick says, “All of our disciplines really have to pull together as a team to earn this accreditation. It’s another indication of how every member of our HealthSouth team works to cre-

ate a culture of caring that’s ideal for the patients...and those who care for them!” “Challenging disabilities, changing lives...we are doing it here one patient at a time,” says Nick, “Our range of care includes an amputee program, an arthritis program, and rehabilitation for those who suffered a brain injury, hip fracture, joint replacement, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, stroke, or multi-trauma. Our physicians, therapists, patients, their families and other members of their care team work together to develop comprehensive, individualized, and cost-effective treatment plans to restore and strengthen the patient...so they can return to their highest level of independence. We change lives for the better...helping patients live up to their fullest potential!”

AMagical ion from Jim-graduat Dad ith w lor Bay 6 198 May

“Y

Night Makes a Difference that

ou don’t have to walk very far n from Jill graduatio to find someone whose life has lor ay B been touched by cancer,” says May 1986 Jim Gibson. “In 1990 both my dad and my wife Jill’s father were diagnosed with different types of cancer. They passed away barely a week apart five years later. Losing them made a huge impact on our lives, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to honor them than by helping other families going through similar tough times. We are honored to serve this year as Event Chairs for the American Cancer Society Event, Couture for the Cause, along with Amy and Dan Johnson, Cari and Scott Middaugh and KK and S. Scott West.” Jill says, “Losing our fathers to cancer was so very painful, Jim and I couldn’t imagine how much more difficult it would have been without sufficient health care, family involvement, and resources. In addition to research and education, the funds raised by the American Cancer Society through Couture for the Cause support families through transportation, lodging, and medical care. Our fathers were active men, loving dads, and would have been fantastic grandfathers. Now Jim and I are the same age they were when they were diagnosed. Of our three daughters, only the oldest has even the vaguest memories of two of the biggest influences on our lives. Couture for the Cause is a wonderful way to honor a loved one by helping others!”

The American Cancer Society Couture for the Cause

A Night in Versailles, Masquerade will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the home of KK and S. Scott West. Planned events include a poolside fashion show produced by Lenny Matuszewski and featuring couture models, many of whom are cancer patients or survivors, seizing their own opportunity to give back. You won’t want to miss the wine pull, “Champagne and Diamonds Raffle,” and craveable food from local restauranteurs.
