We need to start talking about mental illness so we can then talk about mental health

“Progress,

NOT Perfection” ~Teresa Reading

by Amy Sharp

“PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SUM OF THEIR ILLNESSES... THEY ARE MOTHERS, SONS, HUSBANDS, SISTERS, AND BELOVED FRIENDS. IF WE LOOK BEYOND THE LABELS WE SEE WHO A PERSON TRULY IS AND WHAT THEY CAN BE WITH UNDERSTANDING AND THE PROPER HELP!”

E

verything we do affects others,” says Teresa Reading, RN. “It affects our immediate family, our community family, our global family. We need to start talking about mental illness so we can then talk about mental health. And mental health affects everyone.” Teresa works together with her husband, neuropsychiatrist Dr. William H. Reading, two of their four sons, Andre Alzamora and Brian Reading, and the fabulous Sanam Ghaleche and Kitzel Robles to provide general psychiatry, recovery of addictive diseases (including the cutting-edge Vivitrol programs), and NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), the only FDA-approved nondrug, non-invasive treatment for major depression, to our community.

“Everyone wants to be understood,” says Teresa. “At our office, we believe we are all in this together...our staff, the patient, the patient’s family and other agencies. A community of support is so important. Our staff brings expertise, experience, empathy and compassion to the table. The patient’s family brings history and insight, and when the family is involved, they can be better prepared for changes in treatment. The mental health of an individual affects the family unit as a whole...so it makes sense most of the time for the entire family to be involved in treatment.” Teresa and Dr. Reading have been helping the residents of Fort Bend County with mental health for around twenty years. Teresa says, “Fort Bend County is very culturally diverse. Our office family is also diverse and proud to be knowledgeable in a variety of

cultures within the practice. We want everyone that walks through our doors to feel welcome, respected and understood. Our office isn’t clinical...it’s homey, relaxing and inviting and we always ensure privacy.” Teresa’s passion for educating our community family on mental health is evident. She currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Mental Health America of Fort Bend County... an organization that provides resources and continuing education units to mental health professionals, businesses and community members. “In our practice, we also continually strive to refine and improve our educational offerings,” says Teresa. “I’m so excited about the expansion of our office to add a new conference room for patient and family educational services on topics such as medications, diagnosis and available resources. Education is power...the more we know, the better we can work together and help our community.” If you or someone you know could use mental health help, call the family at Dr. William H. Reading’s office today. New patients are generally seen within 24-48 hours due to their extended business hours. Teresa says, “People are not the sum of their illnesses...they are mothers, sons, husbands, sisters, and beloved friends. If we look beyond the labels we see who a person truly is and what they can be with understanding and the proper help!”

hen Stephen Salanon was moving some things around (including a refrigerator) he got a scratch on his foot...and over a couple of weeks it grew bigger and bigger. Had he been bitten by a Brown Recluse? He says, “First I went to a dermatologist. They ran tests and recommended I go to a wound center. At the wound center, they said I needed to have someone treat the veins. The first name they gave me was of a physician who did not have a vascular specialty. When I called his office and read online reviews there were so many red flags that I demanded a different referral. When I saw the name of Local Vascular Surgeon, Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS, I recognized it from the great work he’d done on my veins five years ago!” “When I went in, the wound looked like a crater on one side of my right foot near the back of my ankle near my heel. My wife, Paulette, has been a real trooper. She would get up with me to dress my wound, before I left for my engineering job. If I took a shower, I had to wear a rubber boot, so the wound wouldn’t get wet. Then she’d clean and re-dress it again. I was in constant pain. In fact, when Dr. Baltazar asked me to evaluate my pain levels using a chart, I told him that I didn’t know how to score it...a range of one to ten didn’t touch the constant agony I felt.” “Dr. Baltazar started by ablating one of the calf veins...and compared to my daily pain that was a piece of cake! When it didn’t have the result he wanted, he grew very concerned. I have a blood condition and Dr. Baltazar suspected that the medication I take for it affected my ability to heal. He did a great deal of research before proceeding. The wound was so

deep it was a very serious situation. First he applied eight synthetic skin grafts to build up the tissue. Then he took a skin graft off my leg and used a roller to create paste and applied that to the wound. In three to four weeks, the live graft should take effect. The fact that the procedure was office based was really new and innovative...and he had a consultant from the skin graft company present throughout.” “Dr. Baltazar went above and beyond to find an answer to my problem...and he’s also one of the most caring, personable doctors I’ve ever known. Twice before doing a procedure, he began by praying over my leg. He always let me and Paulette know what he was doing, why he was doing it, what it might feel like, and what the desired outcome would be. We have been very impressed with Dr. Baltazar’s level of specialization and the expertise he brings to each patient. We truly believe that when it comes to veins, there’s nothing he can’t do!” “I know I could call Dr. Baltazar anytime for help...he even came in on a Saturday when my pain was too great. Paulette and I had scheduled a vacation months before all this happened, and Dr. Baltazar said, ‘Go, relax, have a good time...and call me if you need me.’ He even called us once just to make sure everything was okay. You feel like he’s always thinking about your health and is always happy to hear from you. I know Dr. Baltazar won’t be satisfied until my foot is at one hundred percent...and it’s thanks to him that I’m already well on the road to recovery!”

Choosing to Be Your Best Self: Yesenia’s Story

T

hirty-year-old mother of four, Yesenia Flores got married at fifteen. She says, “I had my first child when I was sixteen, and it was scary to see how much my body changed and my stomach stretched out. One day in 2008 I was flipping through the channels when I saw Dr. Ahmadi on a talk show answering questions about the Lipotuck™. He said that one single procedure combined the benefits of a tummy tuck with liposuction. I knew that was the answer...but at the time I had three kids and I knew I wanted one more. I waited and waited, until the day my kids were older and I knew it was time for me to make a choice for myself.” “Just when I had saved up my deposit and was ready to see Dr. Ahmadi, I had a problem with my IUD. After emergency surgery to remove it, my physician told

When they hugged my tummy, I told them I loved knowing they had lived there...but I wasn’t happy with the way clothes fit me now.” “Dr. Ahmadi was even better in person. He really cares and was so patient. I got very emotional talking about my body. I was so insecure about my stomach and really nervous to show him.He told me, ‘You will have great results’ and all the fear went away. Everyone was so friendly and warm that I scheduled my appointment for my Lipotuck™ before I even left his office that first time.” “On the first day I woke up after my procedure I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, all that extra skin is just...gone!’ It was awesome! Now it’s been two months since the procedure and I’m so happy. I’ve dropped to a size zero! I cannot wait to work out, but I know that to get the results I want, I have to follow Dr. Ahmadi’s advice to the letter. He promised that taking the time off during my recovery would only make me stronger in the long run.” “After my kids were born, I thought life would never be the same...I would never feel pretty again. I turned 30 in November and I feel better than I’ve felt since I was a teenager. Dr. Ahmadi has made an amazing change in my life!”

when a pair of pants was loose in the legs, I had to go up a size to tuck in the extra skin around my stomach. I tried everything–a thousand crunches, a trainer, the Insanity workout–nothing changed my stomach. Summers were awful. I wore one-piece swimsuits with skorts and tank tops...because I just wasn’t comfortable unless my stomach was covered up. Better 5 Nights Tips

Sleep by Carl Jarvis

J

im “Mattress Mack” McIngvale likes to say: “You can only be as good as your last night’s sleep!” The connection between quality sleep and good health is something he’s known about for decades. He’s talked to countless customers about it. Yet his own health scare a year ago caused him to refocus on this, and to look again at how Gallery Furniture could provide customers with the best solutions. For many people, a good night’s sleep may seem like an extravagance they cannot afford. With frantic work schedules and the demands of school and family life, sleep has become an afterthought. We take sleep for granted, until lack of sleep harms the healthy habits that form the foundation of success. In fact, the increased pace of life today is the #1 reason to make quality sleep a top priority. According to Nancy H. Rothstein, a sleep

expert and business consultant, there are several simple ways to achieve a more restful night’s sleep: •Put your gadgets to sleep an hour before you sleep. The light from many devices, such as phones, TVs, and iPads, prevents the natural production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you to fall asleep. •Cut caffeine by the afternoon. According to the National Sleep Foundation, half of the caffeine you consume is still in your body six hours after you drink it. •Say no to alcoholic drinks before bed. Alcohol is a sedative and therefore makes you fall asleep faster, but it also disrupts your sleep cycle and reduces the quality of your sleep. •Invest in blue-wavelength blocker sunglasses. If you can’t put your gadgets down an hour before bedtime, this is a great way to protect your melatonin so that you can still fall asleep easily

•Remove tech distractions from the bedroom. Converting your bedroom from an entertainment center to a single-purpose sleeping sanctuary is one of the best ways to consistently ensure a good night’s sleep. “People need to know that getting a good night’s sleep is not a luxury that’s out of reach,” says Mattress Mack. “In reality, it’s the key to the kind of health and success that people want out of life.” That’s why he’s dedicated the last year to creating the Mack-o-pedic mattress line, with options and features that anyone can afford. GF had to cut out the middlemen and go straight to the manufacturing line to have it made. The Mack-O-Pedic is created specifically for Houstonians who have trouble sleeping...and it’s available only at Gallery Furniture. This is the first product Mack has ever put his own name on...with 100% confidence that customers would love the product. The Mack-o-pedic is Made in America. It’s made out of high quality materials that will last and GF customers have been very pleased with the entire Mack-o-Pedic line. “So if you’re having trouble sleeping,” says Mattress Mack, “Come out and lay on a Mack-o-pedic floor model. Then have your own Mack-O-Pedic delivered to your home to sleep better tonight... because you can only be as good as your last night’s sleep!” To discover the Mack-o-Pedic that’s right for you, call GF bedding expert Brandt Maples at 281-407-4628.

Joy to the World

oy is the a reason for the Christmas season…and Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. invites you to share in the happiness of the Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy family. Just recently, Dr. Campbell and his wife Rakel welcomed the addition of baby Claire, who was greeted with much love and excitement by her big sisters Chloe and Caitlyn and big brother Cole. Dr. Campbell says, “After giving birth to her first child, baby boy Grayson, pharmacist Lisa has returned to our Sugar Land location. We celebrated with her family and completely supported her decision to spend a year nurturing Grayson, but we certainly missed her! All of us at Campbell’s Compounding think of each other and of our patients as family...and that gives every day of work a deeper and richer meaning!” A compounding pharmacist works with local doctors and prepares medication from scratch, so each member of your family gets exactly the strength and the dose needed. Dr. Campbell says, “As a parent as well as a pharmacist, I know how vitally important it is to create a dosage customized to your child’s height and weight...or a method of delivery that takes into account your adult parent’s concerns. We can put your medication into just about any form–from capsules or creams to injections or lollipops…even in pacifiers and bottles. God made each and every one of us unique…just like our unique needs for medication. That’s something we give thanks for every season, 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2014

but especially at Christmas.” If pain or illness keeps you from counting your blessings, Campbell’s Compounding can put the smile back on your face. Dr. Campbell says, “We accept major prescription and insurance plans for commercially available medications and specially compounded medications. Auto-refills and free shipping are also available. As a compounding pharmacy, we also offer creative solutions to common problems. For example, we can mix an antinausea cream that you rub on the inside of the wrist. It won’t make your children well, but it will make them more comfortable and help them keep down the liquids and medicine that will help them get better. We also offer compounded pain-relief medications that won’t afflict you with side effects like drowsiness, impaired driving, or upset stomach. We’ll work with your doctor to find the solution that works best for you and your health.” Campbell’s Compounding is a family-centered pharmacy and that makes them a perfect fit for our community. Dr. Campbell says, “We look forward all year to celebrating the birth of Christ with our family, friends and community…I can’t Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy think of a better gift 281-980-2555 “If our staff can’t make it… for you or your loved then you probably don’t need it!” ones than health and 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 vitality.”

Next Stop...St. Michael’s! ’Twas the Night Before Christmas... And all through the house the family was gathered, and someone said, “Ouch!”

W

ould a sudden emergency ruin the Holiday cheer? Not with St. Michael’s always ready and near. “Our specialty-trained, board-certified ER physicians, nurses, and technicians are here to help you and your family,” says Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. “We never take a holiday from caring for you!” What makes emergency rooms so packed around the holidays? Is it the constant Fa-La-La-La...Ooops! as people slip off ladders while hanging twinkling lights or could it be Martha Stewart mishaps while preparing the big feast? St. Michael’s offers nine exam rooms (including pediatric themed rooms, a sports room, and a Harley-Davidson room!), a treatment suite for observation, and a comfortable waiting room...but don’t expect to wait! St. Michael’s will keep your ER visits quick, so you can get back home for the holidays. Tim M. says, “St. Michael’s has wonderful Doctors who provided excellent service. The exam room was as nice as a first class hotel room...and I went straight in with no waiting. I highly recommend St Michael’s!” If Santa twists an ankle on the roof, or dad slips off the ladder while hanging the holiday lights, they need treatment quickly. As Sugar Land’s first free-standing ER, St. Michael’s has their own X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, and on-site diagnostic lab. If you do need long-term treatment, St. Michael’s is not affiliated with just one single hospital...instead they have agreements with all the best nearby hospitals to get you priority care quickly. James K. writes, “When you need an emergency room, the last thing you want is a long line and mounds of paper work before you can see

a doctor. St. Michael’s provides a refreshing take on the emergency room experience!” Doesn’t it seem like emergencies always happen on weekends, evenings, or holidays...when your doctor’s office and urgent care centers are closed? Never fear...by law your insurance must pay innetwork benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “innetwork” or “out-of-network.” Only a grinch would insist on anyplace other than St. Michael’s! Dr. Orsak says, “St. Michael’s is one of the few licensed, free-standing ER facilities with Joint Commission Accredition, ACR certified radiology suites, and CLIA certified labs. We are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fiftytwo weeks a year, St. Michael’s Emergency Room is ready to help your family! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!” At this time St Michael’s is currently not participating with Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

his year at all my holiday parties and family get-togethers, I don’t want to look my best,” said no one ever! Yet instead of seeking the expertise they need to shed the weight and smooth the wrinkles, most people just silently resign themselves to the dreaded “holiday ten” or try to disguise it with a long sweater and sparkly jewelry. Come New Year’s, they vow to make changes. But once that day arrives, starving and over-exercising doesn’t get any easier, and the best intentions can go awry. Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss would like to change all that. He and his staff can help you achieve “Your very best you” through the newest innovations and superior medical support. Celebrities like Kim Kardsashian and supermodel Bar Refaeli know the secret to ageless beauty could lie in your own blood. “In the Vampire Facelift,” says Dr. Alford, “we withdraw and spin down your own blood and obtain a platelet layer that is high in blood products that naturally promote inflammation and healing. The Vampire Facelift rejuvenates your face by encouraging collagen formation to reduce wrinkles, improve your complexion, and tighten loose skin. You’ll look refreshed, younger, and naturally beautiful.” For an additional ‘wow!’ factor, Dr. Alford also offers i-Lipo to tackle those stubborn pockets of fat and cellulite on your body that diet and exercise can’t touch. Featured on the “Ricki Lake Show,” “The Morning Blend,” “The Doctors,” Dr. Oz,” and in Harper’s Bazaar, i-Lipo is an FDA-approved, safe, affordable, painless, and highly effective way to contour your body and smooth cellulite. “It dissolves fat without damaging the surrounding tissue,” Dr. Alford explains. “There are no needles and no downtime. Many women lose 1-2 dress sizes. There is no bruising or swelling, and no complications. You can literally come in during your lunch break, have the procedure, and leave our office looking and feeling great.” Since patients who eat healthy and get moderate exercise see even more dramatic results, Dr. Alford offers several physician-approved weight loss programs. One of his most popular ones, Medi-Health, gives you the option of delicious, prepared meals that take all the calorie-counting and guesswork out of eating right. If controlling your appetite is a problem, NeuroAssist uses amino acids to work with your brain’s neurotransmitters and with no side effects. Hunger pangs will be a thing of the past. “I want all my patients to enjoy success, good health, and confidence,” says Dr. Alford. “Come in for the advice and support you need to transform yourself for better health and beauty!” Sugar Land Wellness and Weight-loss 832-494-7469 • 16651 SW Fwy #100 www.sugarlandwellness.net www.medi-health.com

Bringing Your Design Dreams to Life

D

o you love leafing through home decor magazines and browsing pictures on Houzz.com? Don’t settle for pretty pictures...it’s time for a change. Maybe the gap between the home you have and the home you imagine seems insurmountable, but your design dreams are just a phone call away from coming true. Unleashing your inner creativity is easy with Teri Gilberg, the Re-Modelista. This “Get-It-Done-Diva” will coordinate all the aspects of getting the materials, scheduling the contractors, managing the work, and making sure you approve the final look...all with one eye on quality and the other on the bottom line. Whether you can picture the room of your dreams or you need design ideas from an expert, Teri’s got you covered! She says, “I’ll come over and we’ll discuss what you want done. Then I’ll introduce you to the contractor I think would be the best fit for the job and your personality. All our teams have had thorough background checks, carry insurance, and have years of experience. Since I work with several contractors, it’s easy to find the perfect match. If you do need a change, there’s no worry. Just give me a call and I’ll handle everything!” Do you work long hours and have a long commute? Teri will be on the job site daily, managing all aspects of the project so you don’t have to fret! Keeping your costs in line with your budget can be easy...with a little help. “I’ll manage everything and see

that you get a clear invoice of costs upfront,” says Teri. “I’ll coordinate all the work and you won’t pay anything extra for my services. here was a time when firmer, younger looking skin and breasts could only be achieved with surgery or other costly procedures. Fast forward to today, where new advances in aesthetics allow you to enjoy a radiant, glowing complexion or more youthful breasts...all without invasive procedures! Board-certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Chary Tamirisa M.D aka “Dr. T” says, “At Sugar Land Medical and Aesthetics, my wife, board-certified Internist Dr. Tamirisa Renu, M.D., our daughter Dr. Aparna Tamirisa, M.D. board-certified Internist, and I understand that there are women who cannot afford to take time off from work to recuperate from an aggressive

surgical procedure, or others not interested in costly procedures or injections. That’s why we are so excited to bring Vampire Breast Augmentation, Vampire Face-Lift and microneedling to Sugar Land!” Do you miss wearing elegant, backless holiday dresses? Dr. T. says, “The Vampire Breast Augmentation uses your own natural blood cells to lift the breast and nipple. The shape of the breasts is improved without invasive surgery and the result is a more youthful appearance with lift and cleavage. It’s like wearing a well-made bra...without one. Wear that backless holiday dress with confidence!” Similarly, the Vampire Face-Lift is a non-surgical, no downtime, form of facial

rejuvenation that uses your own natural blood cells. Dr. T. says, “The face is lifted and your healthy glow is restored. Skin appears younger with more volume, better color, and a healthy glow. For scars, fine line and wrinkles on the face we offer microneedling...a procedure that prompts the body to respond through the creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. As the skin plumps and thickens, all those problem areas are minimized for a smoother, more youthful appearance!” All procedures at Sugar Land Medical and Aesthetics are physician monitored. Dr. T says, “The science of aesthetics helps capture and reveal your natural beauty. Schedule a consultation and we can discuss your goals and what regimen might work for you! In addition to the non-invasive aesthetic procedures, we also offer physician-grade skin care products and permanent make-up.” Everyone deserves to feel and look beautiful. Baby, It’s Cold Outside By Sarah Warburton

W

hen the temperatures drop, you wrap your kids in sweaters and scarves and dig out your coats and gloves...but don’t forget to keep your plumbing bundled up, too. After all, when water freezes, it expands and can form a blockage, leading to an increase in water pressure and burst pipes. We asked the team at Alan’s Plumbing for the best ways to prevent winter plumbing problems. Once you know a hard freeze is coming, take the time to wrap your exposed pipes. Instead of grabbing old towels or blankets, pick up pipe insulation and insulation tape from a hardware store. Start with the main water riser that goes directly into your home...it’s the most important point to wrap. Another place that’s easy to forget is the sprinkler vacuum breaker. Cover that exposed pipe very carefully... and then take one more step. Go to the vacuum breaker, turn one knob to shut the water to it off, and then turn the other to bleed down the water that’s still in there. If you don’t, that’s the place where water freezes and expands, causing a crack and a dramatic flood of water. If you can’t turn the knob or the pipe’s corroded, call Alan’s Plumbing for the advice you need to prevent a plumbing disaster down the line. You and your family can enjoy your holidays in peace,

knowing there’s a local plumbing family looking out for you. Master Plumber Alan Burkhalther says, “Being a family-owned and operated business for the last fifteen years keeps our operating costs low...and we pass those savings on to you. We earn your business the old-fashioned way–– by giving the best prices on the good work we do. When it comes to honest pricing on the actual job, we know we’re the best in town!” Keep the holidays happy. Whether you’ve got a burst pipe, a clogged drain, need to replace a hot water heater, or a toilet reset, call Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris Burkhalter, his wife Jennifer, their sons Luke and Beau, and fellow-plumber Zach. And if you are going out of town for the holidays, protect your plumbing first. Along with the house key and the alarm code, make sure your neighbor or best friend has the number for Alan’s Plumbing. Jennifer says, “Our family is doing well and we hope yours is, too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all us at Alan’s Plumbing!”

he top two resolutions people make on New Year’s Eve are to be healthier...and to get the house in order. Years of kids and dogs and company can wear out your counters and tile. But how can you get a fresh start without leaving it all behind? Jonee and Paul Barnett of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing say, “We don’t believe in the saying ‘out with the old, in with the new.’ Thanks to the Miracle Method, you can keep your existing counters, tiles, and bathtubs in place but completely change the way they look. With our help, you’ll celebrate another decade with family and friends...with kitchens and bathrooms that look brand new!” The first step of decluttering involves getting a trashbag and tossing all your old and worn-out stuff. Now imagine if everyone ripped out their old bathtubs, tile or counters…. our landfills and trash heaps would be overflowing! The Miracle Method refinishing process transforms tile, cultured marble, Corian®, Formica®, Wilsonart® and other laminate countertops.…without ripping them out! When you choose Miracle Method, you reduce the burden on landfills and help reduce pollution created by manufacturing and transporting of new fixtures...without paying for carbon credits (or an expensive remodel)! “We’re big believers in making everything old look better-than-new,” says Paul. “Our process isn’t recycling...it’s UPcycling!” Paul and Jonee have a reputation that speaks to the beautiful results they deliver. Accredited members of the BBB, our local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing has an A rating on Angie’s List and has won the Angie’s List Super Service Award six years in a row. Jonee says, “Miracle Method is a truly Green choice that delivers beautiful, long-lasting results. Our popular Natural Accents™ finish offers a multi-color stone look that’s seamless, non-porous, heat resistant and scratch resistant and easily repaired. You really can have tile, bathtubs, and countertops that look like new...and feel good about the process!” Making a dramatic change for the New Year can be easy. Jonee says, “Even our biggest projects rarely take more than Jonee and Paul Barnett a week. If you call right now, we may be able to transform your counters or bathroom in time to ring in the New Year!”

any of our veterans often return home wounded, jobless, and in need of a little help from all of us they were protecting. Through the sale of new trucks, Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevy Sugar Land has pledged to raise $75,000 for veterans right here in Fort Bend County. Don says, “When Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land’s drive ‘Raise a Roof, House a Hero’ has reached its goal pledged to OPERATION FINALLY HOME, our check will supply seed money toward a fine new home in Fort Bend County for one of our deserving wounded veterans.” On this past Veteran’s Day, November 11th, wounded veterans from the Houston area gathered at Classic Chevy Sugar Land to share their stories of hope and healing...and how receiving a mortgage-free house from the national non-profit OPERATION FINALLY HOME changed their lives. Wounded veteran retired Sgt. Alexander Reyes said, “I’m the first one in my family that can call myself a homeowner. This is the best thing that could have happened to us!” “Combat veteran and amputee USMC Lance Cpl. Ceontre Shelton couldn’t be with us today,” said Daniel Vargas, retired Tech Sargent USAF and Vice President of Family Matters and Community Outreach of OPERATION FINALLY HOME. “But this month he’s moving into his mortgage-free house supplied by sponsors recruited by our organization. Don says, “Our Wall of Honor lets each new truck buyer sign his or her name and know that $250 of the purchase price of a new Silverado truck will go to OPERATION FINALLY HOME for a house for a Fort Bend County-area wounded veteran. We will continue this drive until the end of the year when we anticipate handing over a check for a minimum of $75,000— donated by our customers!” OPERATION FINALLY HOME provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s Heroes and the widows of the fallen who have sacrificed so much defending our freedom. By uniting corporate sponsors like Classic Chevy Sugar Land, builder associations, builders, developers, and contributions from individuals and volunteers like all of us, OPERATION FINALLY HOME helps these Heroes and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs – a home to call their own. lysoun Marks says, “I’ve been receiving chiropractic care since I was a teenager. When my husband and I moved to this area last year, all the moving and unpacking gave me a real pain in my back...so I looked for a chiropractor and I found Dr. Steve Harris at the Sugar Land Health Center. He did such good work that I was excited to learn he offered a weight loss program. Dr. Harris’ wife sat down with me and went over all the steps of the program and it couldn’t have been easier!” “Over the past eight years, I’d put on about sixty extra pounds as a result of treatment for breast cancer and my subsequent thyroid disease. Over those years I also suffered setbacks like a pinched disc in my back and a broken ankle. I tried to exercise, but all those hiccups made weight loss so difficult. Dr. Harris’ program made everything simple. In the first place, I really wasn’t hungry at all! My husband and I did the program together to support each other...but he’d been worried it would be one of those diets where you’re starving all the time. Secondly, we actually both saw very rapid weight loss. I lost thirty pounds in one month and he lost thirty-five! I think that this is a breakthrough in losing weight because it makes your body healthier while rapidly dropping weight and requires low discipline.” “Losing weight quickly meant we didn’t have to sustain willpower for very long. Maintaining the weight loss has been much, much easier than losing weight ever was! You get a clear meal plan that’s easy to understand and follow. In fact, I just got back from a Girls Weekend to the Food and Wine Festival in Fredericksburg...and I’m going to use that meal plan to take off the pound or two I put

oesn’t it seem like yesterday that your little ones were waiting for Santa in their footed PJs? Time flies! Dr. Anh Doan says, “One patient who was six years old at her eye exam (just two weeks after I opened my Vision Source location in Missouri City!) has now graduated from college. It brings tears to my eyes knowing I was part of her life for so long. It’s true that ‘the days are long, but the years are short!’” You don’t want to “blink and miss out” on a moment of your child’s life, so it’s crucial that you take care of your health. Many Health Savings Account or Medical Flex Spending Plans don’t allow unused benefits to be rolled over to the new year... but there’s still time to make an appointment for an exam, a new pair of glasses, and some peace of mind for the future. Your family physician will pull out a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope to check your health, but Dr. Doan needs to look deeply into your eyes to see what’s really going on. “As the primary care doctor for your vision,” she says, I’ll use dilation to check your retina and optic nerve for the the warning signs of problems like hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes and for damage that signals age-related macular degen-

eration or glaucoma...the first and second leading causes of adult blindness in the U.S. Anyone with diabetes must also have an annual dilated exam to detect leaking or damaged blood vessels. I’m sorry to say I recently saw major diabetes and end-stage glaucoma in patients who hadn’t kept up with their annual eye exams. A dilated exam is the only way to ensure you enjoy seeing your family grow and make a lifetime of memories!” As the mother of two growing teenagers, Dr. Doan knows how quickly the years go by. She says, “I’m an avid knitter, and when I knit for others, I stop and think about how important they are to me. Don’t let time cheat you of the chance to protect your vision....you and your family deserve to see clearly for years to come!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. uring the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the greatest gift you can give you family is sharing quiet moments together. Designer Caron Lopez, who with husband Candelario, owns Grand Windows and Interiors, says, “Take the time to gather around the kitchen table to share stories of your day, to bake and cook and decorate together, enjoying Christmas music and remembering that the best blessings in life can’t be wrapped and put under a tree.” “One Christmas well-remembered by my husband and children was one when we short on money for non-necessities. I bought food items for the stockings we hung on the mantle. Into each stocking I tucked a funny note. For my daughter (who didn’t eat bananas) I put a note on an orange that said, ‘Orange you glad I’m not a banana?’ We had so much fun! The kids went back and re-gifted each item throughout the year...adding their own version of funny notes. The greatest gift we can give our children is teaching them

to treasure the happy memories we make together...and so many of those memories are made in the kitchen.” “If the kitchen is the heart of the home, your heart may be overflowing this holiday season. When it’s fragrant with the scents of cinnamon, apple, and clove, you have your favorite carol playing in the background, and the lights are twinkling on the tree, it may be hard to imagine anything better. But if your kitchen is bursting at the seams with all your friends and family (not to mention pots and pans and baking sheets), maybe it’s time to dream big...and at Grand Windows and Interiors, we believe in making dreams come true. Instead of putting one wrapped box after another under the tree, your family could save up for a kitchen spacious enough to embrace your ever-expanding family, one with storage at hand for all your favorite bakeware, one designed to reflect your personality and the things you hold most dear.” “My favorite part of designing is creat-

hen Niyah Gordon had an achy tooth, Mr. Whistle, Mr. Bumpy, and Mr. Thirsty fixed her right up. Those aren’t cartoon characters or imaginary friends...they’re the special tools Dr. Bianca Sanchez uses at Little People’s Dentistry! Mom Hana Salem says, “Every single day I drive past the sign for Little People’s Dentistry, so when my three-year-old daughter, Niyah, complained of a toothache, only one place came to mind. I was a little nervous, because it was Niyah’s first dental appointment, but everything was wonderful. The waiting area is perfect for kids and made us both comfortable right away.” “When Dr. Sanchez performed the exam, you could tell she had plenty of experience and a natural talent for working with kids. She was patient and very motherly, as she talked Niyah into opening her mouth so all her teeth could be ‘counted.’ The gloves Dr. Sanchez and her assistants use are flavored, so that that purple ones are grape. Niyah also picked a bubble gum toothpaste for her cleaning. By that point, she was really interested in everything.”

“The best part was when Dr. Sanchez complimented Niyah on taking such good care of her teeth and gave her a ‘good exam’ certificate. Niyah asked me if she could take it into school to show her teacher, because she was so proud. The dental team also took her picture, gave her a balloon and a goody bag, and made her feel really excited about taking care of her teeth. This was an incredible first dental experience...and now Niyah’s looking forward to seeing Dr. Sanchez again!” “It’s remarkable to find a place with such a high level of truly genuine customer service. You can tell that they treat you well because they love what they do and they care about their patients. I’m thrilled to spread the news about what a wonderful place Little People’s Dentistry is for kids...and parents, too!” Don’t forget to bring your kids to Little People’s Dentistry before the end of the year. Dr. Sanchez says, “I’d hate for your dental

benefits and health savings account dollars to be wasted when they could be put towards stronger, happier smiles for your kids. And I know our patients are getting excited about our coloring contest. They’ve been entering monthly for a chance to win a monthly prize, a $25 Toys R Us gift card or the big, end-ofthe-year annual prize, a Kindle Fire. At Therapeutic Thai Massage, masseuses may use their elbows, knees, forearms, thumbs, or even step onto your back...but each therapist chooses the right positions for your comfort level. In addition, your therapist will move you through a choice of 400 positions to harmonize your entire body. Even Better Than Santa’s Elves

Look through every holiday tradition in every culture and ask yourself, “Which one will give me a clean house?” Not a single story promises than good girls and boys will be reward with sparkling countertops and sanitized bathrooms. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend your holidays scrubbing and scouring your own house instead of sharing in the joy of the season. Sal Lucatero, co-owner of Professional Maid Service says, “We offer regularly scheduled cleanings and special help for special occasions, too! Whether you need a onetime deep cleaning or weekly help to get you through the holidays...you can always

leave the cleaning to us!” Given a choice between an elf that puts treats in your stocking and a Professional Maid who sweeps and vacuums and mops, who would choose the elf? Every team from the Professional Maid Service is bonded and insured, has undergone thorough background checks, and arrives neatly uniformed in a clearlylabelled company car, so you can have complete confidence. Not even Santa can make that kind of promise about his team! Sal says, “This time of year many of our clients choose our no-hassle key drop off and pick up, so they come home from running errands, a long day of work, or a holiday party to find their house is sparkling clean and waiting.” One client told us, “Deciding to schedule regular home cleaning by Professional Maid Service is the best gift I ever gave myself!” Co-Owner Max McCammond says, “You can also call us to arrange the gift of a cleaning for your parents, your best friends, a new mom, or an overworked teacher. Tex-Mex with Heart

W

e can promise you that the flavors at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Tex Mex at Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant, recently named as one of Houston Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurants in Houston. Not only are the hand-made tortillas bigger than average, so is the spirit of love the Garcias bring to everything they do. Jamie says, “We use recipes that have

been handed down for generations in my wife Lupe’s family. At Lupita’s, our family serves our customers with joy...and they become like family to us, too.” During the holidays, we gather together to celebrate, reconnect, and reminisce. Jaime says, “Over the past eleven years, we’ve seen so many peo-

ple share a meal with their kids, their spouses, or their friends and neighbors at Lupita’s. One of the greatest blessings in our life has been getting to know our customers...their stories, their joys and sorrows. We’ve rejoiced with them in the good times and wept with them in times of sorrow. This season of year, we miss those who are no longer with us, but their memories will live forever in our hearts. We want our customers to know we care for them and their families...always.” When you think about it, Tex Mex is the perfect food for the holidays with the green of avocado and tomatillo and cilantro, the red of tomato and chile and bell pepper. Bring your family to Lupita’s...or call ahead to order a tray of Lupe’s tantalizing tamales...a tasty Christmas tradition! Jaime says, “We have families who call every December for tamales or Tres Leches cake to-go. We can also handle to-go orders or catering for a

family event, a corporate meeting, or a big party. You send the invitations, we’ll handle the fajitas (complete with Lupe’s secret marinade) for fiestas of any size!” Share the mouthwatering taste of down-home Tex Mex with your loved ones…and feel the generous spirit of the Garcia family warm your heart. Jaime, Lupe, Rigo and Leo Garcia say, “Muchas gracias for your loyalty, support, and friendship over the years... and Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo from our familia to yours. May 2015 bring blessings for us all!” Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant 281-265-6556 Southeast corner of Hwy 6 & Williams Trace www.lupitassugarland.com

A HEALTHY SMILE

“One of my favorite holiday traditions is our annual Lomonte family Italian Sausage Party. We gather to share Italian food and music, good wine, and take turns mixing and stuffing sausage with our secret family recipe. My dad’s brother, my Uncle Frank, started the tradition, then his son, my cousin, continued it, and now it’s my turn...and my son Matt and my daughter Natalie are learning the secret, too. Whatever your family traditions are, remember...everyone smiles in the same language!”

early every family has its own winter traditions. Baking and exchanging cookies with your neighbors or family members. Running a local race in the name of charity. The most important thing about these yearly traditions is being healthy enough to continue to enjoy them! Obviously, we can’t control when we’ll be faced with a medical emergency, but we can all take preventative measures to ensure overall health. Diet, hydration, exercise and sleep are all key to basic health. But did you know that many diseases and conditions in the rest of your body can start right in your mouth? Not just the food you put in it, but the health of your mouth itself! “The number of medical conditions related to tooth decay is astounding,” says Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford. Recent studies have shown that the development of cardiovascular problems like

heart disease, blockages of blood vessels and strokes have all been associated with chronic inflammation from gum disease. Many diabetics already know that chronic inflammation of the gums seems to weaken the body’s ability to control blood sugar and utilize insulin. There are even current studies on the effects of gum disease on rheumatoid arthritis, lung conditions and obesity. Since your annual dental checkup could help you “ace” your annual physical, why not make it a yearly family tradition? Dr. Lomonte says, “Dental check-ups are worth it for you and your family’s overall health… they are one of the biggest ‘bangs for your buck’ in medicine! Now is your last chance to use up your dental benefits or flexible medical spending accounts before December 31st...and we also offer financing, payment plans, and can draw up a schedule that fits with your budget. f it’s time to outfit your home with new appliances or electronics, but you don’t know where to start, take heart! Ramesh Parikh, co-owner of Sara Appliance and Electronics along with his son Mehul, says, “Come by and we’ll get to know you personally...so we can help you pick out the best products for your lifestyle, budget, aesthetic, and space. The customer experience is our #1 priority!” The oil and gas industry brought this chemical engineer to Houston, but he couldn’t shake his entrepreneurial spirit. Ramesh says, “Both my father and grandfather were businessmen in India, and I always felt destined to own a business, too. In 1981 I started an international appliance company helping my friends overseas get some of the products that weren’t available elsewhere. When they moved to the states, I helped them transport their appliances and convert their electronics. That initial business run out of my garage grew as I focused more and more on selling appliances domestically...eventually leaving the international aspect behind. By 1989 I had my own warehouse and distribution center in Houston, and today we also have storefronts in Katy and Sugar Land. The success of Sara Appliance and Electronics is based on our honesty and integrity. 90% of our customers are referrals...and we are proud to claim over 12,000 customers since 1981!” Ramesh’s son, Mehul, graduated from the University of Texas in 1999. Mehul says, “I worked in IT and database consulting during college, and after graduation I moved out to LA to be a

wenty percent of children learn how to play a musical instrument...but seventy percent of adults wish they had. Why? Because as adults, we recognize how important music is–not only for its own sake, but because of the structure of music and the discipline required to play, it will resonate for a lifetime. Research bears this out: music education makes a better student and a more fully-rounded human experience. It’s never too late to start music lessons even as an adult...and those lessons are the very best gift you could give a child! Prince said, “The key to longevity is to learn every aspect of music that you can,” and that’s a lesson Fort Bend Music Center understands! Since 1983, they’ve been the Houston area’s preferred venue for music lessons, instrument sales and rentals, instrument repair, music books, and piano moving and tuning.
