DESIGNS THAT RENDER THEIR OWN STORY

THE STELLARIUM

Austin, Texas

The Stellarium, is a multisensory educational museum, named from the word "Stellarium"; which is a three-dimensional map of the stars. The museum is located in Austin, Texas, where 69% of people live with some type of disability. The Stellarium provides a universally designed museum that explores how to navigate with the 5 senses – sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. The design of the space is inspired by disabled people who struggle to navigate their daily lives throughout buildings and to enlighten designers as to the importance of a built environment designed using the principles of universal design. The Stellarium, located with a School for the Deaf, is designed for the general public, as well as impaired students, family and friends, and designers. The clients, Travis County Service for The Deaf & Hard of Hearing, will use the museum as a way to share the value of universal design, highlight the daily struggles of a dual sensory impaired person navigating through the senses, and creating an inclusive community. The space also offers ASL, painting and braille classes.

THE STELLARIUM

First Floor

The overall navigation of the Stellarium building was the most important design consideration. This universal designed museum has 36" hallways for wheelchair accessibility, ADA door levers, sinks, turn radius and grab bars, and 32" wide doorways leaving space for elbows and hands for wheelchair users. The walls have a slight curve to them allow blind visitors to use touch to navigate the building. Experience design was also an important concept of the space. Since able-bodied visitors are also visiting, the museum offers the opportunity to experience what it is like to be impaired One feature is the Maze Room, a simulation room designed to create the experience of navigating like a dual sensory impaired person

Second Floor

The second floor is designed to house the office spaces, a multi-purpose education room, and the constellation café. The café is designed to create a sensory experience through smell, as well as a visual experience through the use of constellations on the ceiling.

CONTE RESIDENCE

Brisbane, Australia

2,000 square feet

The Brisbane River, runs through Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and crosses fifteen major bridges. The river meanders through an urban area that comprises 2.562 million people. These bridges, many constructed 150 years ago, all vary hugely in design- from original rail bridges to modern works of architectural art. They also vary in function, from pedestrian only bridges to railway bridges and car traffic bridges. The design concept for the Conte Residence is based on the term scoliosis, a Greek word meaning curved or bent. Today it is a word used to describe the most common type of spinal curvature. When a scoliosis develops the spine bends sideways and rotates along its vertical axis. These changes have cosmetic and physiological effects with long-term consequences which may result in significant health problems and severe curvature.

Many of the Architectural elements will feel very structured like a bridge, with very linear, neutral, metallic elements. The hall ways will represent the river, very flowing, organic elements. Combining these two design principals will add interest to the space allowing anyone to feel comfortable in the space.

CONTE RESIDENCE Concept

Australia, known for its youthful zeal and, charming vibe is located on the Brisbane River. Many smaller rivers branch off the Brisbane River, connected by 15 major bridges. The main river goes through an urban area with population of 2.562 million.

Bridge Concept

Scoliosis spine = curving of a river The bridge is like a brace – it used to function throughout the city. The design will interplay the use of straight and curvilinear lines, complimented by industrial materials and textures, such as wired cable, iron, steel, and concrete.

Placement of the kitchen, dining room and living room are designed ot take advantage of the breathtaking views. The hallways mimic the the flow of a river, contrasted by rooms with a more structured feel.

CONTE RESIDENCE Floor Plan

The FF + E selections support the overall design concept of a modern bridge. The furniture either has the materials, structure, flow, or function to relate to the concept. As the client has a disability, function was considered over form. The clients physically limitations, and reduced ability to bend, was an important consideration in all furniture and fixture selections.

CONTE RESIDENCE Finish Plan

CONTE RESIDENCE Kitchen

The Conte's wanted an industrial feel to the kitchen, from the concrete countertops to the wire framed pendants, reflecting the concept of a modern day bridges. The counter tops heights are 40" to avoid having to bend down to use the standard height countertops.

Inspiration

The design inspiration was initiated by The Complex in Asbury Park, NJ, which offers three restaurants that connect together, for ease of movement within the building. The design intent, through materiality and FF + E, was to express the idea of “re-inventing the wheel”, taking old, rusty products and redesigning them into new, innovative, and fun products

The history of Bell Work is reflected through the products they designed. Taking those timeless products and reinviting them allows visitors to experience and learn about the history of Bell Labs as they enjoy a meal.

HISTORICAL PRODUCTS

This space was designed during the pandemic. Taking that into consideration the restaurant needed social distancing and cleanable materials, allowing guests to feel comfortable at a safe distance.

The conference rooms, manager and admin offices are adjacent from the entrance allowing accessibility to staff and visibility to clients.

CDS+FURNITURE MAKING

Stockholm, Sweden

The Frequency is a Swedish night club that plays off the elements of sound waves. Many organic shapes and lines are brought into the space including the lighting features over the bars, dance floor and lounge areas. Construction Documents tell the story of a space, from the floor plan to the detailed sections, all of these pages need to be thorough and well organized.

Tensegrity Table

This table is built with tensegrity. A system of isolated, compressed components within a network of chords that are under continuous tension. The middle structure of the table is under tension while the chain "legs" are under compression. The table materials are dark oak wood, stainless steel chain, I bolts and screws. Multiple oak planks were biscuit jointed and glued together in order to get the top and bottom pieces. The two middle organic structures were cut on a bandsaw and sanded on a drum sander. Once all the wooden elements were created, I then had screw in the middle structured with the chain piece in the middle to create that tension, while it was under tension I was allowed to loose or tighten the chain legs as necessary.
