Andrew whittuck: A Life in wide AngLe

Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes In this striking exhibition, Whittuck showcases a curated collection of photos of remarkable people and places. Over the years, he has photographed stars including Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Mick Jagger. He’s also carried out plenty of food shoots, working with top chefs Marco Pierre White, Nigel Slater and the late Antonio Carluccio, among others. More recent works include landscape photography of the UK and France. Enter into his world and prepare to be fascinated.

Alexandre da Cunha’s first solo presentation in a UK public institution for a decade. Duplex is an articulation of da Cunha’s engagement with cultures of consumption, reuse, materiality and art history. The result is a vibrant dialogue about the history and function of symbols and material in society, from park benches and umbrellas to cement mixers and beach towels.

Hove Museum & Art Gallery This new collection of work by influential ceramic artist

Oxmarket Gallery, Chichester Local glassmaker Adam Aaronson is gathering together a bunch of creative friends to collectively present Bright Horizons. It will feature a coterie of notable artists celebrating creativity through a range of artistic disciplines, from Tinx Newton’s atmospheric paintings to Adam’s glass vessels. The theme of the exhibition is a brighter future, brought to life through a continuing exploration in the creative practices on display.

It integrates the materials of one religious community (Christian) with the iconography of another (Islamic). Constructed from redundant church pews, it draws upon the visual language of Islamic architecture to create a new kind of contemplative space, one that looks for ‘common cultural and spiritual ground’ in our diverse society.

Richard Slee: Mantlepiece Observations at Hove Museum and Art Gallery

Richard Slee marked the reopening of Hove Museum & Art Gallery on July 26. Known as the ‘Grand Wizard of studio ceramics’, Richard’s objects and installations are inspired by the 1937 Mantelpiece Reports, which called upon volunteers to share descriptions of what was on their mantelpieces for the Mass Observation Project social research project (part of University of Sussex), which aimed to document everyday life in Britain. For this exhibition, Slee has returned to form, making his first Toby figures in 25 years, inspired by a detailed account in one of the reports.

Other works include a Janusfaced ceramic spaniel taking its cue from a Staffordshire dog figurine, as described by a housewife from Burnley. Quirky and fun, it’s well worth a visit.
