Bursaries and Partnerships Impact Report

Jan 2024-Jan 2025

Welcome to our second Impact Report!

In these pages we will focus on Philanthropy at Notting Hill and Ealing High School during the last 12 months, to update you on the progress of our 150th Anniversary Bursary Appeal and tell you more about how our School Partnerships programme is developing.

Our 150th Anniversary year was a truely remarkable one, with so many firsts, both for us and for the GDST. We had the biggest ever OGA Tea Party with its inaugural auction for bursaries and wonderful Madrigal Choir reunion; not to be outdone, our parents held their own auction at a brilliant ball; another celebratory highlight was the performance in London’s Cadogan Hall, hosted by the ambassador of our appeal, Angellica Bell (Class of 1993), which brought together our students and alumnae to sing a specially commissioned work by Kerry Andrew. Rupa Huq MP (Class of 1990) kindly hosted us at the House of Commons for our annual thank-you event, and we held our first ever Giving Day which raised over £50,000 for our Bursary Fund. We certainly celebrated our big birthday year with style and, most importantly, purpose.

We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to our Bursary Appeal so far; as you will see, with your help, we have nearly achieved our immediate goals – to create three new 95%+ bursary awards as a legacy of our 150th birthday celebrations. Thank you! Our long term goal is to embed bursary-giving deep in our culture so that we can nurture more talent and play an even more significant role in social mobility in our local area. All and every donation helps to ensure that more students who need it benefit from the amazing educational opportunities at our School. If you have not yet had a chance to contribute, we hope that you will consider supporting our efforts to help girls learn without limits.

NHEHS has always been an aspirational and grounded school. Our students, staff and families, past and present, make it so. The breadth of our student body enabled by our Bursary funding, and the inter-school relationships supported by our Partnerships programme, enrich everybody in our community. Everyone makes a difference.

We hope you enjoy reading about the second year of our campaign.

Over £55,000 was donated on our first ever Giving day. Charlie

‘Sometimes in the moment you don’t realise its value or importance. It may sound strange , but I’ve always said I was blessed to have been awarded a bursary to attend NHEHS - the drive the other students gave me, the belief some teachers had in me and since that time the opportunities which have opened doors for me. Now, after twenty years in television and radio, I want to ensure that future generations of students get the chance to be educated at the school as I did, irrespective of economic barriers. At the end of the day, being a pupil at NHEHS helped mould me and gave me the confidence to be the person I am today. It gave me insight into what could be achieved - everyone should have that chance.’

Angellica Bell, Class of 1993 Ambassador of the 150th Anniversary Appeal

Payroll Giving pledges Payroll giving is a tax efficient way of regular giving, making charitable donations go further while costing the donor less; for example, a donation of £20 a month would cost a 40% taxpayer £12 a month, and a 45% taxpayer £11 a month

One Percent Method 71 girls’ parents have given one percent of their daughter’s fees each month towards this bursary. At less than £20 a month, giving together makes a significant difference, creating a lifetime value for the fund of over £110,000. Their daughters come from across the school, some even giving on behalf of more than one of their daughters.

Who benefits?

Over 340 young women have been awarded bursaries which enabled them to attend NHEHS. They have gone on to be lawyers, doctors, scientists, financiers, entrepreneurs, teachers, politicians, journalists etc. Grateful for having had the opportunity and eager to make a positive difference in the world, here some of our most recent bursary award holders kindly share their thoughts with you in the hope that they will inspire you to enable more young women to benefit as they have.

‘If you come from my background you don’t feel you can pick a career you like; you just want to make sure you won’t be in the same situation as you were when you were young, for you or your children, so the careers guidance here was really helpful. The Parents’ Guild came in to talk about their careers and it was their confidence that struck me so deeply. I’d never seen parents talk about their careers. It was a great opportunity for me to watch and learn. I thought if I can adopt their attitude, I am sure I can get to where I want to be.’

Building on a growing tradition, the ‘Leavers of 2024’ were very generous, almost matching the figure donated by the ‘Leavers of 2023’.

Our Partnerships

A Commitment to Meaningful Partnerships

Our Partnerships Programme is a testament to our commitment to enriching education while fostering meaningful relationships within the community. Many of our initiatives are student-led, helping participants develop confidence, knowledge, and skills beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on the impact of these programmes, Oliver Futter, Assistant Head Co-Curricular and Partnerships, shared: “Our partnership initiatives have had a profound impact on students, schools, and the wider community. Seeing the enthusiasm, growth, and collaboration that has emerged from these programmes has been incredibly rewarding.”

Through continued collaboration, we look forward to expanding these initiatives, creating even more opportunities for students to learn, inspire, and connect.

NHEHS is actively engaged in several impactful partnership programmes, fostering educational enrichment and strengthening community ties.

BUDS Programme

Returning for its third year in January 2024, the BUDS Programme once again provided enriching and engaging sessions for local primary school students. NHEHS proudly welcomed 55 Year 5 pupils from 21 Ealing primary schools to take part in seven Saturday sessions. Each school was invited to nominate up to six students who would benefit most from the programme.

Students participated in a dynamic range of activities, including Creative Thinking, STEM, and Public Speaking, designed to develop confidence, creativity, and critical thinking while providing a platform to express ideas.

A dedicated group of 40 students attended all seven sessions, allowing them to deepen their knowledge and build upon prior learning. The sessions were led by three experienced teachers from our Junior and Senior School, with enthusiastic support from Year 12 students.

26 local schools with whom we have partnered in 2023/24.

“My son is absolutely loving the sessions and comes home inspired, energetic, buzzing, and bursting with conversation about the whole experience! I can’t believe how much he looks forward to these sessions, even though it means going to school on a Saturday morning! Many thanks again for the opportunity—we feel incredibly lucky and grateful.”

A Year 5 pupil from St Vincent’s Roman Catholic Primary School reflected on the programme:

“I love science with BUDS because I get to learn new and exciting things. I also enjoy creative thinking, as it helps me use my imagination and problem-solving skills.”

GreenSTEM

The GreenSTEM programme, involving 33 students from four secondary schools, has been a resounding success, fostering a passion for STEM while strengthening connections between schools.

Phd students from Imperial College London, introduced students to an environmental research competition, sharing insights from their own scientific work. Over three sessions at NHEHS, students developed their research skills and wrote essays addressing key environmental challenges. The programme culminated in a prestigious event at the Natural History Museum, where students presented their essays to a panel of experts.

A student from Drayton Manor High School shared: “This programme has really helped me develop my research skills and figure out how I work best. It has also improved my confidence in public speaking and taught me a lot about working as part of a group.”

A student from Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School, who is pursuing a career in Maths and Economics, said: “I learned so much about how society and culture play a huge role in influencing different fields.”

The Bank of England hosted an online economics conference run by The Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA) for students. A key theme of the day was the notion that ‘economics is for everyone’ with speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds themselves, sharing details of their own career journey. All our Sixth Form Economists watched live from the Recital Hall along with 20 Year 12 students from Greenford High School. There were opportunities for topical discussions among the students afterwards, sharing their knowledge and passion for the subject.

Minimus Latin Exchange

Our Minimus Latin exchange with North Ealing Primary School has provided Year 11 Latinists with the opportunity to teach Latin to younger students, enhancing their understanding of language and culture. The programme’s continued popularity is reflected in the ongoing participation of North Ealing Primary students and the Minimus Mythology competition, where our students have consistently won group prizes. This partnership has left a lasting impact, fostering a love for languages and classical studies.

The Astrophysics and Computing Conference gave Year 12 computer science and physics students the chance to learn from leading astrophysics researchers, tackle scientific challenges, and collaborate in problem-solving. With 70 students from girls’ and state schools, the event promoted STEM participation. Four female researchers shared their journeys into research, inspiring young women to explore careers in physics and computer science. Their talks covered space physics and the importance of computational modeling Students also participated in challenges involving orbital mechanics, simulating the ISS’s orbit, and devising solutions for space debris. Beyond deepening their technical understanding, the event provided valuable insights into university research and career pathways.
