If the Romanian cinema is nowadays so “on the rise”, it is undoubtedly owing also to Cristian Nemescu’s and Andrei Toncu’s talent and work.

And because the things that always helped and stimulated them, alongside their natural talent, were the competitions in which they took part and the meetings with overseas filmmakers, we thought that the way in which the story can go on is this one – an event in which young people interested in films coming from different cultures can meet, exchange ideas, assimilate and enjoy Cinema. In a nutshell, to prepare themselves for what’s next.

We knew too little about how to make a film festival when we decided to start NexT, but we tried our best to make something Cristi and Andrei would have enjoyed – a lively event, with good films and people with which you can chat about cinema, with good music and positive vibes, a festival for friends.

We hope that those who take part in NexT – competitors, audience, guests – will leave carrying with them a trace of Cristi Nemescu and Andrei Toncu – a part of the NexT spirit.

And if this will be visible in the filmmakers’ next films or in the public’s increased appeal for cinema, than we reached our goal.

Dacă cinematografia românească este astăzi atât de “pe val” este fără îndoială şi datorită talentului şi filmelor lui Cristi Nemescu şi ale lui Andrei Toncu. Şi pentru că pe lângă talentul nativ, ceea ce i-a ajutat şi stimulat întotdeauna au fost competiţiile la care au participat şi întâlnirile cu cineaşti de pe alte meleaguri, ne-am gîndit că felul în care povestea poate merge mai departe este acesta – un eveniment în care tineri pasionaţi de cinema din culturi diferite să se întâlnească, să schimbe idei, să se încarce şi să se bucure de Cinema. Pe scurt, să se pregătească pentru ce urmează. Ştiam prea puţin despre cum se face un festival de film când am decis să pornim NexT dar neam străduit să facem ceva ce le-ar fi plăcut lui Cristi şi Andrei - un eveniment viu, cu filme bune şi oameni cu care se poate vorbi pe-ndelete despre cinema, cu muzică bună şi energii pozitive, un festival de prieteni.

Sperăm că cei care participă la NexT – competitori, spectatori, invitaţi – vor pleca de aici purtând în ei o parte din Cristi Nemescu şi din Andrei Toncu – un pic din spiritul NexT. Iar dacă asta se va vedea în filmele următoare ale cineaştilor sau în apetitul crescut pentru cinema al spectatorilor, atunci înseamnă că am reuşit.

Total cinema It’s a shame that short film programmes do not really have a place of their own in the commercial film circuit (as short story anthologies have theirs on the book market). The assumption is that, for the general public, it is too difficult to readjust, every 15 minutes or so, to a complete change of story, tone and style. Well, it is an effort. On the other hand, it is my belief that a two-hour-long programme of short films can beat, in terms of spectacle – in terms of audience spectacle –, just about any feature film with the same length. After all, there are very few feature films that fully explore and exploit the possibilities of the medium (very few that make use of every cinematic muscle, so to speak), whereas a short film programme can be conceived as a show that tells the viewer: ”Look how many things can be done – superlatively – with film: this, and that, and that...”, a show that would send the viewer home walking on air, feeling that he has truly travelled far and seen a lot. This is pretty much what I was after in my selection work for the 2008 edition of the NexT Film Festival: 30 films (preferably unknown to Romanian audiences and still ungarlanded with prizes) that, arranged in 4 programmes (of approximately 135 minutes each), would constitute 4 shows of total cinema. I dare say that the final result is not that far from my dream.

Spectacole de cinema total E mare păcat că programele de scurt-metraje nu au un loc al lor, bine stabilit, în circuitul cinematografic comercial, aşa cum antologiile de proză scurtă îşi au locul lor pe piaţa de carte. Se consideră că pentru marele public de film e un efort prea mare să intre la fiecare 15 minute într-o poveste nouă, complet diferită ca gen, ton şi stil, de cea dinainte. Fără îndoială că este un efort. Pe de altă parte, e convingerea mea că un program de scurt-metraje lung de aproximativ două ore poate să bată, ca spectacol – ca spectacol de public –, aproape orice lung-metraj cu aceeaşi durată.

La urma urmei, foarte puţine lung-metraje explorează şi exploatează din plin resursele cinema-ului (cum ar veni, foarte puţine îi mobilizează toţi muşchii), în timp ce un program de scurt-metraje poate fi conceput ca un spectacol care să-i spună spectatorului: „Iată câte lucruri poate face cinemaul la superlativ: asta, şi asta, şi asta...”, un spectacol de la care spectatorul să iasă călcând pe aer, simţind că într-adevăr a umblat şi a văzut din plin. Cam asta am căutat, ca selecţioner al filmelor din competiţia festivalului NexT, ediţia 2008: 30 de filme (pe cât posibil, necunoscute spectatorului român şi neîncoronate la alte festivaluri internaţionale) care, împărţite în patru calupuri (a câte 135 de minute fiecare), să se constituie în patru spectacole de cinema total. Aş îndrăzni să spun că rezultatul final nu e atât de departe de visul meu.

CRISTIAN NEMESCU

As a student of Bucharest’s National University of Drama and Film I.L. Caragiale, Cristian Nemescu directed a series of short films which were funny, sexy, brazenly lyrical, technically audacious and visually alive in a way that signaled the presence of a major talent. Mihai and Cristina (2001) won Best International Debut at the International Film Festival Message-to-Man in Sankt-Petersburg, as well as audience awards at the Milano Film Festival and at the Young European Cinema Festival in Torun, Poland. C Block Story (2002) was nominated for Best Short at the European Academy Awards; it also won the Grand Prize at New York University’s International Student Film Festival and it went on collecting awards and invitations at more than 20 film festivals from all over the world. Nemescu’s first independently-made film, the ambitious, 45-minute long Marilena from P7, had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival; its festival itinerary included Edinburgh, Telluride and Cottbus. An accomplished technician by the age of 25, Nemescu also won recognition as a director of commercials and music videos. By the time of his death (27), he has just finished shooting his first feature film, the superbly capacious and vital California Dreamin’ (2007), selected Best Film in the section Un Certain Regard, at the Cannes Film Festival.

Caragiale din Bucureşti, Cristian Nemescu a realizat o serie de scurt-metraje care erau în acelaşi timp comice, sexy, insolent-lirice, îndrăzneţe din punct de vedere tehnic şi încărcate de o vitalitate vizuală care semnala prezenţa unui talent prodigios. Mihai şi Cristina (2001) a câştigat premiul pentru Cel mai bun debut internaţional la Festivalul de Film Message-to-Man din Sankt-Petersburg, precum şi premii ale publicului la Festivalul de Film de la Milano şi la Festivalul Tânărului Cinema European de la Torun, Polonia. Poveste de la Scara C (2002) a fost nominalizat pentru Cel mai bun scurt-metraj la Premiile Academiei Europene de Film şi a primit Marele Premiu la Festivalul Internaţional de Film Studenţesc organizat de New York University. Primul film independent al lui Nemescu, ambiţiosul mediu-metraj Marilena de la P7, şi-a avut premiera internaţională la Festivalul de Film de la Cannes; itinerarul său festivalier a inclus apoi Edinburgh, Telluride şi Cottbus. Nemescu a devenit un tehnician desăvârşit până la vârsta de 25 de ani, câştigându-şi un renume şi ca regizor de videoclipuri şi reclame. În momentul morţii sale (la 27 de ani), terminase de curând filmările la lung-metrajul său de debut, California Dreamin’ (2007), un film de o anvergură şi de o vitalitate spectaculoase, câştigător al premiului secţiunii Un Certain Regard la Festivalul de la Cannes.

Upon his graduation from the National University of Drama and Film I.L. Caragiale (2000), Andrei Toncu worked extensively as a sound designer and sound editor in Romania and in the US, in film, television and advertising. As a perfectionist and fervent believer in the creative use of sound, he was depressed by the predominant shabbiness and lifelessness of the soundscape of Romanian cinema, and was determined to change it. His goal, in his own words, was to establish a standard for sound design in the Romanian film community. He had found a good and receptive ear in director Cristian Nemescu, and his contribution as a sound-designer is one of the reasons why the short films Mihai and Cristina (2001) and Marilena from P7 (2006) are so strikingly vital and technically daring. He worked on Nemescu’s debut feature California Dreamin’ (2007), up to the night of the car crash which killed them both. His last finished film was Radu Jude’s The Tube with a Hat which went on to win (among many other prizes) the award for Best Short at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. A few days before his death, he had been contacted by Francis Ford Coppola with a proposition to work on the sound effects of his new film Youth Without Youth (2007).

După absolvirea Universităţii Naţionale de Artă Teatrală şi Cinematografică I.L. Caragiale (2000), Andrei Toncu a lucrat intensiv ca designer şi editor de sunet în România şi în Statele Unite, în film, televiziune şi publicitate. Andrei credea cu tărie în forţa nelimitată a sunetului cinematografic folosit în mod creativ şi era hotărât să schimbe cu totul peisajul sonor – predominant sărăcăcios – al filmului românesc; ţelul lui, după cum spunea el însuşi, era să impună comunităţii cinematografice româneşti un nou standard în designul de sunet. Îşi găsise un colaborator ideal de receptiv în regizorul Cristian Nemescu şi contribuţia lui, ca designer de sunet, e unul dintre motivele pentru care scurt-metrajele Mihai şi Cristina (2001) şi Marilena de la P7 (2006) frapează prin îndrăzneala lor tehnică şi prin vitalitatea lor. A lucrat la lung-metrajul de debut al lui Nemescu, California Dreamin’ (2007), până în noaptea accidentului de maşină care i-a ucis pe amîndoi. Ultimul său film terminat a fost Lampa cu căciulă al lui Radu Jude, cel mai premiat scurt-metraj românesc din toate timpurile. Cu câteva zile înainte de moartea sa, Toncu fusese contactat de Francis Ford Coppola cu o propunere de a realiza efecte sonore pentru filmul său, Tinereţe fără tinereţe (2007).

NexT Jury 2008 / Juriu NexT 2008 BERNARD PAYEN (SEMAINE DE LA CRITIQUE, FRANCE / FRANȚA) Bernard Payen – editor in chief of “Travelling Avant” (1992-1999) and of “Objectif Cinema”, website since 2000, also in charge of the radio programme “The Night’s Pasangers” since September 2007. He is also in charge of the publications at the Cinematheque Française in Paris and Short Film Coordinator at the International Crtic’s Week (Festival de Cannes).

Bernard Payen – redactorul-şef al revistelor “Travelling Avant” (1992-1999) şi “Objectif Cinema”, versiunea online (din 2000) şi realizator al programului radio “Pasagerii nopţii”. În prezent se ocupă de asemenea de publicaţiile Cinematecii Franceze din Paris şi este coordonatorul selecţiei de scurt-metraje pentru Semaine Internationale de la Critique din cadrul Festivalului de la Cannes.

ANNA HOFFMANN (FORUM BERLINALE, GERMANY / GERMANIA) Anna Hoffmann, born in 1962 in Hamburg, studied media science and cultural anthropology and worked as a programmer, curator, film critic and translator before joining the team of the Berlin Film Festival as programming coordinator and member of the selection committee of the International Forum of New Cinema in 2000.

Născută în 1962 la Hamburg, Anna Hoffmann a studiat antropologie culturală şi ştiinţe media, a lucrat că selecţioner, curator, critic de film şi traducător, înainte de a se alătura echipei Festivalului de Film de la Berlin în funcţia de coordonator de program şi membru al comitetului de selecţie pentru secţiunea “International Forum of New Cinema” în 2000.

Premium Films is specialized in the International short film market and now manages a more than 500 short films catalogue from 230 International producers. The company also started in 2006 the feature films coproduction activity, whose first coproduction, “The Legacy”, has been awarded in Sundance in 2007 .

JAMIE TRAVIS (DIRECTOR / REGIZOR, CANADA) Jamie Travis has built a strong reputation in Canada’s independent film scene as a director of precise vision. His five short films have all had a great success on the international film festival circuit. Highlights include Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Bucharest, Slamdance and South by Southwest. Comparisons have ranged from Peter Greenaway to David Lynch to Alfred Hitchcock. The recurring theme of childhood frailty - alongside his painstakingly designed interiors have established Jamie as “an indie auteur-to-watch.”

Jamie Travis şi-a construit o reputaţie puternică de regizor cu o viziune percutantă pe scena cinemaului independent canadian. Cele cinci scurt-metraje ale sale au avut toate un real succes în circuitul internaţional al festivalurilor de film. Printre cele mai importante se numără Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Bucureşti, Slamdance, South by Southwest. A fost comparat cu Peter Greenaway, dar şi cu David Lynch şi Alfred Hitchcock. Tema recurentă a fragilităţii copilăriei, deopotrivă cu decorurile migălos construite, l-au consacrat pe Jamie ca un autor independent de urmărit.

TUDOR VOICAN (scriptwriter / SCENARIST, ROMANIA) Tudor Voican (MFA screenwriting, York University ) is an assistant professor at the Romanian National Film School. The movies he wrote were screened in more than 100 film festivals all over the world winning “Un certain regard” award in Cannes, “Best artistic contribution” at Montreal World Film Festival and the “Satyajit Ray” prize at the London International Film Festival.

Tudor Voican (masterat în scenaristică la York University ) este asistent-profesor la Universitatea Naţională de Teatru şi Film I. L. Caragiale. David Nordstrom lives in Los Angeles. In addition to filmmaking, he writes about film and literature for the online journal “The High Hat”. Nordstrom recently received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. “A Sea of Troubles” is his thesis film.

Originally from Tokyo, Oiwa now works as a sound designer and composer in Los Angeles. Before working in film, Oiwa was very active in the indie-rock scene with his electronic pop duo IQU, performing around the world with The Flaming Lips, Mouse On Mars, and Chicks On Speed.

Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu was born in 1978 in the Republic of Moldova. Since 2002 she lives and works in Berlin. At the moment she studies in the IVth year film directing at DFFB, Deutsche Filmund Fernsehakademie Berlin.

Manfred has been interested in good sound ever since he was a small boy. In 2003 he decided to start a professional education at SAE Berlin, a school for audio engineering, and completed his education in 2005.

Besides his work for film productions, since January 2008, he is also working as an audio lecturer at filmArche, one of the film schools in Berlin, teaching students how to make good recordings by using the right equipment, and how to optimize the sound in post production.

Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu s-a născut în 1978 în Republica Moldova. Din 2002 trăieşte şi lucrează la Berlin. În prezent este studentă în anul IV la regie de film la DFFB, Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin.

The story of illegal workers from Moldova on a building site in Berlin.

A group of illegal workers is permanently afraid of German authorities, but are also robbed by their own compatriot, who is the middleman, between them and the German construction supervisor. The situation gets out of control, when Igor, the main character needs more money and a dangerous game begins.

Povestea unor muncitori ilegali din Moldova care lucrează pe un şantier din Berlin.

Un grup de mucitori ilegali se ascunde în permanenţă de autorităţile germane, fiind în acelaşi timp înşelaţi de propriul lor compatriot, omul de legătură dintre ei şi supraveghetorul german al șantierului. Situaţia scapă de sub control când Igor, personajul principal, are nevoie de mai mulţi bani, ceea ce dă naştere unui joc periculos.

Pe Manfred l-a interesat sunetul de calitate de mic copil. În 2003 s-a decis să facă studii de specialitate la SAE Berlin, o şcoală pentru inginerie audio, studii pe care le-a terminat în 2005. Pe lângă munca pentru filme, din ianuarie 2008 a început să predea tehnologie audio la filmArche, o şcoală de film din Berlin, unde îi învaţă pe studenţi cum să facă înregistrări bune folosind echipamentele potrivite, şi cum să îmbunătăţească sunetul în post-producţie.

His interest in animation especially comes from the freedom of modelling that we can give to pictures; a freedom inspired by Russian animation or some French studios.

Born in Paris he only left the capital city to study in Valenciennes.

He is above all a literature, theatre and music lover. Animation represents to him a way to add to the story the movement and aesthetic of surrealism or constructivism, from which he takes his inspiration.

S-a născut în partea de nord a Franţei, iar în prezent lucrează la Paris. Interesul lui în animaţie vine în special din libertatea formei pe care o putem da imaginilor; o libertate inspirată din animaţia rusă sau a unor studiouri franceze.

Jean-Michel Drechsler Director / Regizor Jean-Michel comes from the Eastern part of France and now lives in Paris. Cinema has always attracted his interest and, long before his studies, he had tested to produce his own films with all kinds of means.

Here he was, that blind man, in the middle of the empty room.

We put a helmet on his head, to see what is inside. But dark is not empty.

S-a născut la Paris şi a părăsit capitala doar pentru a studia la “Valenciennes”. Iubeşte mai presus de orice literatura, teatrul şi muzica. Pentru el animaţia reprezintă un mod de a adaugă poveştii mişcarea şi estetica suprarealismului sau a constructivismului, din care se inspiră.

She was born in 1975 in Ankara. Between 1993-1995 she studied Political Sciences at the Free University of Brussels, and between 1995-1998 she studied scriptwriting and editing at the “Institut des Arts de Diffusion” (IAD). At the end of her studies she founded, together with two former students from IAD, an audio-visual production atelier, LAB5, which allows them to produce their own films.

Aside from “Cleaning Lady’s Dreams”, he worked on the sound mixing of the following films: “Santa Fe Street” (2007), “Salvador Allende” (2004), “Le Dernier Plan: Sur les pas de Constantin Dolinescu” (1999) – by Benoit Peeters, with Florin Piersic Jr. and Mihai Dinvale.

He directed several short films as a student while attending ESRA school. After that, he created “Kamera Sutra”, an original show which mixes video and live theatre, that played in Paris in 2005. More recently, he created and directed a short children program for French TV TF1, “les zozors”. Together with Franck Lebon, he wrote and directed “Edward in Wonderland”.

Ca student la ESRA, a regizat mai multe scurt-metraje, creând apoi “Kamera Sutra”, un spectacol original care combină proiecţiile video şi teatrul şi care a fost pus în scenă la Paris în 2005. Recent, a creat şi regizat pentru postul francez TF1 un program scurt pentru copii, “les zozors”. Împreună cu Frank Lebon, a scris şi regizat “Edward în Ţara Minunilor”.

Edward discovers the wonders of corporate business in this burlesque musical.

Edward is an ambitious young man, freshly graduated from business school. Hired by a major worldwide corporation, Craesus Inc, he becomes the new hype prophet of gross and profit, and the star of an absurd musical business show where shareholders, corporate executives and mass-consumers dance to the same paradoxical sparkling tune...

Edward este un tânăr ambiţios, care tocmai a terminat studiile economice. Angajat de o importantă corporaţie internaţională, Craesus Inc, Edward devine noul promotor al profiturilor şi produsului brut, şi vedeta unui muzical economic absurd în care acţionari, directori și consumatori dansează pe aceleaşi acorduri paradoxale.

He started very young to learn the piano and the percussions and studied sound at the Louis Lumière School.

His sound design works (for Jeunet and Caro, A. Chabat) enabled him to develop sound processing tools that he uses for his music. He sharpened his melody and harmony sense while assisting Reinhardt Wagner (composer for P. Thomas, J. J. Beineix). In 2005 he received the UCMF prize for short movie best score, and directed several short films for the show “Kamera Sutra”. In 2007, he’s both the composer and director of Edward in Wonderland.

A luat de mic lecţii de pian şi percuţie şi a studiat sunetul la Şcoala Louis Lumière. Munca de sound designer (pentru Jeunet şi Caro, A. Chabat) l-a ajutat să-şi dezvolte propriile instrumente de procesare pe care le-a folosit în muzică. He was born in 1975 at Kiel, Germany. In 1994 he did his first 3D/Animation, in1997 he studied Art and Graphics at the School of Arts Alsterdamm Hamburg. Since 1999 he studied at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg. He designed the concept for an animated tv-series “Die Kargs”. His filmography comprises: “Vorbei” (1998), “Die Aufgabe” (2000), “Die Chance” (2000), “Jimmy” (2001), “Aal im Schaedel/Eels” (2003-2006) – a 3D animated Shortfilm. This is his graduation film.

In 2006 he finished the Audio and Video Engineering course at the University of Music and the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Since his graduation he has been working as re-recording mixer at Torus Studios in Cologne. He worked on the sound design of several short and feature films. He was awarded the German Sound Master Guild’s newcomer prize 2006 for sound design and mixing the movie “Aal im Schädel”.

He works as a writer, producer and director for shorts, music videos and commercials, and is now developing his first feature film, “The Last Day”.

He collaborates frequently with Marian Crisan on his shortfilms, working as editor and sound designer for films such as: “The Amateur” (2007), “Family Portrait” (2006) and “Happy Birthday!” (2005). He graduated the Multimedia Department at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Bucharest in 1999.

Juana was born in Madrid, in 1971. She studied Audiovisual Communication at the Complutense University of Madrid. Since 1995, she works as a director (for commercials, documentaries, music video) and lectures Film Direction at the Francisco de Vitoria University of Madrid. In 2003, she published “24 words per second. How to write a screenplay”, published by IORTV. She has directed 5 short films in 35mm awarded with more than 30 national and international prizes, including the Goya Best Spanish Short Film Award in 2000.

He was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1975, and has BA Audiovisual Comunication, Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

He teaches sound design in three Universities in Madrid, and owns Multidesign, his own sound studio, specialized in Dolby Digital multichannel mixing. Among several other film works, including more than 20 short films, he has just finished his first three features films “Pajaros muertos (Died Birds)”, “La Tablilla” and “Polillas”.

Three men talking to three women we never see, three men arguing, three men claiming no one understands them. A deep insight in the every day life of three isolated characters, a quick glance into the drama hidden behind the anonymous faces we see on the streets any given day.

Benjamin de Lajarte Director / Regizor Benjamin was born in 1971 in Caen, France.

As a child he took on musical studies that would lead him years later to study with Olivier Messiaen. In 2002 he definitely moved to Paris, became the co-founder of the production company Qualia Films and produced three pictures.

Benjamin is pursuing his career as an actor for motion-pictures, television and the stage theater. His first feature film, entitled “The games of clouds and rain” has received the First Script Trophy by the National Center for Cinema in 2005 and is currently in production with Qualia Films. “Her name” is his second short movie.

Benjamin s-a născut în 1971 în Caen, Franţa.

In a hotel, Sidney – an American tourist vacationing in France – wakes up one morning to discover that his wife has left him. In the solitude of his room, he finds a new hope on the other side of the wall: a mysterious Chinese woman, who is staying in the next room with her husband, seems to need help.

Un bărbat încearcă să treacă dincolo de ziduri, căutând un gest sau un cuvânt ca să comunice cu femeia din camera învecinată. Într-un hotel, Sidney – un turist American în vacanţă în Franţa – se trezeşte într-o dimineaţă şi descoperă că l-a părăsit soţia. He studied History of Art at Edinburgh University and since then has worked for little or no reward on quite a few features, some of which got finished.

He was Stephen Poliakoff’s assistant on the Emmy Award-winning “The Lost Prince”, which took ten years off his life. His first short film, “Traffic Warden”, was quite well received and it has only taken three years to make another, I Am Bob. He currently working on a feature adaptation of Julia Strachey’s novella “Cheerful Weather for the Wedding”.

She worked for films such as: “Vantage Point” (2008), “How to Be” (2008), “Manolete” (2007), “Anastezsi” (2007), “Flight of Fury” (2007), “True True Lie” (2006), “Blue Blood” (2006).

A studiat Istoria Artei la Universitatea din Edinburgh, şi de atunci a lucrat aproape fără nicio recompensă pentru câteva lung-metraje, unele dintre care au fost şi terminate. A fost asistentul lui Stephen Poliakoff la “The Lost Prince” (câştigător la Premiile Emmy), care i-a mâncat zece ani din viaţă. Born in 1977 in Ljubljana, Spela Cadez studied at the Department of Visual Communication Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. After she graduated in 2002 she continued her studies in Cologne at the Academy of Media Arts, where she turned towards animated film. During her studies she made the film Mate to Measure (2004) and was granted the Audience Awards for Best Student Work at the Brussels ANIMA. “Lovesick” is her graduation film.

Born in 1977 in Hamburg, Johanna studied sound for motion picture at Babelsberg’s film academy. She explored all sound related positions and genres of motion pictures, ranging from field recording to mixing –though she prefers the role of a sound editor. Aside from creating sound for motion pictures, she regularly explores other genres such as radio plays and sound installations. Since 2006 she lives and works in Slovenia.

Chris and Maciek have recently completed their first professional film, “Madame Tutli-Putli”, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. In addition to their role as filmmakers, Chris and Maciek wear many hats—as animators, sculptors, collage artists, screenplay writers, and art directors. In 1997 they founded Clyde Henry Productions, a Montreal-based film and production company specializing in multimedia, stop-motion animation and visual effects.

Kaspar Jankis Director / Regizor He has been interested since childhood in drawing comic strips and writing stories for which he made illustrations himself.

He has been part of the creative core of several rock groups, written song lyrics, made arrangements and created tunes. He enrolled at the Tallinn Pedagogical University in 1996 and completed his first films at that school - “Dr. Maisarve and the Matshalka Case” (1996) and “Flight of the Little White Helicopter” (1996). He transferred from the Pedagogical University to the Turku Arts and Media School in Finland in 1997 to study animation under the guidance of Priit Pärn.

A small town is gripped with excitement in anticipation of the annual marathon. Instead of the starting shot, a bomb explodes.

A chain of events is set off and nobody can guess how it will end.

The police inspector, a sculptor, a gang of crooks operating in the vicinity of a public lavatory — all of them have to go through their own marathon. Only a balloon released by chance glides on its own without knowing how things began or how they will end.

Un orăşel este cuprins de agitaţie în aşteptarea maratonului anual. În loc să se audă împuşcătura de start, o bombă explodează. Se declanşează un lanţ de evenimente şi nimeni nu poate şti cum se va sfârşi. Inspectorul de poliţie, un sculptor, o bandă de escroci care operează în apropierea toaletei publice – toţi trebuie să parcurgă propriul maraton. Doar un balon scăpat din greşeală zboară nestingherit fără să aibă habar cum au început lucrurile sau cum or să se sfârşească.

He also works as scriptwriter (“Oeschenen”, TV-Movie SFTV, 2004) and director. His short-films have won over 30 awards at festivals and were shown in cinemas and on television. Between 2004-2007 he attended the postgraduate studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. “On the line” is his diploma film.

Bartosz was born in Breslau, Poland in 1982. He emigrated to Germany with his parents when he was five years old. Together with painting, architecture (several publications in the most important Polish architecture magazines) leads his way towards film. From 2003 on he studies directing at the “Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München”. In 2005 he was a jury member at the “International Film and TV Schools Festival Mediaschool” in Łodz. In 2008 he participated in the 6th Berlinale Talent Campus.

Kostia was born in Russia in 1984. He studied contemporary composition in Hanover, Germany, and is currently studying at the CNSM in Paris. At present he is working in a recording studio alongside school.

In 2007 he was awarded Best Sound for “My left eye 2” at the CineMAiubit International Film Festival and did the editing for “Fragments”, (film which won the Special Prize at the CineMAiubit Internationl Film Festival). He was also a member of the jury in the Computer Arts and Animation section of the INFOMATRIX international competition for the 2004-2007 editions.

Rolul predestinat al voievodului Ştefan cel Mare devine centrul universului pentru un băieţel care se pregăteşte pentru o serbare. Ştefan, un băieţel de zece ani, trebuie să-şi îndeplinească misiunea pentru piesa organizată de şcoală, hărăzită prin destin.

Rolul voievodului Ştefan cel Mare devine centrul universului său, iar piesa devine ocazia perfectă pentru părinţi şi profesori de a se mândri cu eforturile copilului lor, indiferent de cât de greu sau nefiresc i s-ar părea acest lucru micuţului.

În 2004 a început să studieze multimedia în cadrul Universităţii Naţionale de Teatru şi Film “I.L.Caragiale” din Bucureşti. În 2007 a primit premiul pentru Cel mai bun Sunet pentru filmul “My left eye 2” în cadrul Festivalului Internaţional CineMAiubit şi a făcut montajul pentru “Fragmente” (câştigătorul Premiului Special la CineMAiubit). A făcut parte din juriul concursului internaţional INFOMATRIX, secţiunea Artă Digitală şi Animaţie la ediţiile 2004-2007.

He was born in 1977, in Guetersloh, Germany. In 2001 he took acting lessons at the IKB Bielefeld, and then graduated Fiction Direction at the Film Academy in Baden-Württemberg in 2006. In 2004, he completed the Summer Masterclass „The Hollywood Perspective“ at UCLA, Los Angeles, sponsored by LBBW. Carsten works as a freelancer for film and television.

Christian works in audio postproduction for cinema and television since 2001.

He participated in numerous productions during his academic studies of audiovisual media at the Stuttgart Media University (HdM).. So far he held primary responsibility for audio postproduction of over 70 productions in all areas of media. Since September 2007 he has a Diploma in Media Technologies and works as a freelance sound designer and re-recording engineer.

Christian lucrează în post-producţia audio de cinema şi televiziune din 2001.

A participat la numeroase producţii în timpul studiilor universitare de tehnologie audiovizuală de la Universitatea Media din Stuttgart (HdM). Până acum a fost principalul responsabil pentru post-producţia audio a peste 70 de producţii din toate domeniile media. Leaving the farm for Penn State University, he earned degrees in Geography and Filmmaking, which he used to land a job at a rural bank. Here, his duties included cashing checks, taking deposits, and playing the crook in Friday-morning bank robbery drills. Levi is currently an MFA candidate at New York University, where he is developing a feature film.

Levi Abrino, 26 de ani, a fost crescut împreună cu patru fraţi adoptivi la o fermă de lactate din zona rurală a Pennsylvaniei. Following a BA in English and Philosophy, David graduated with an MA in Film Studies in 2004. After his film study David worked for a variety of Irish (post) production companies. In 2006 he set up his own company Tilted Pictures in order to develop film and television projects. David has independently made several short films and music videos.

Patrick is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin’s MA in Music and Media Technology. As a journalist he is a regular contributor to “The Sunday Tribune” and “The Irish Times”.

Patrick has also been involved in several bands in the Irish music scene including “The NPB”, “El Diablo” and “Patrick Freyne and His Bad Intentions”.

Three musically narrated vignettes told by different prisoners who have at different times lived in the same cell.

Beginning in cell 298 the film moves from cell to cell as three prisoners recount the story of their crimes in song with each blaming his excesses on an accomplice, the enigmatic man in 301.

He comes from Florence, Italy. After a law degree at the university of Florence he moved to England to study cinema at the London Film School.

He finished his film studies in Oct. 2005 obtaining an MA with distinction with “End of season”. In the past two years has been working as assistant director on Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna” and Peter del Monte’s “In your hands”. At the moment he lives in Rome writing his debut feature.

He was born in Turin, and has a degree in Cinema and literature. Andrea worked as sound designer for concerts and theatre plays. In 2006 he successfully applies to enter at the “Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia di Roma”, the Italian National Film School. Since then he has been sound designer for one feature film (“7/8”, directed by Stefano Landini), many shorts (amongst which “In the name of no one” by Alessandro Guida, awarded at Rome Film Festival 2007) and documentaries (amongst which “Sei del mondo” by Camilla Ruggiero, awarded at the Overlook Festival 2007).

Jamie spent much of his youth travelling around the world with his family (living in Holland, Denmark, Korea, Japan, Venezuela, and Estonia).

Eventually he returned to England where he completed his education and went to Oxford to read Law. After University Jamie attended Bar School and qualified as a Barrister before turning his attention to his life long obsession – Film. With no formal film education (other than a couple of weekend courses) Jamie went on to write, direct and produce two well received short films, and in 2001 he completed his first feature entitled “Soho Square”.

Phil studied at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth where he specialised in postproduction sound for film and animation.

Phil has worked in TV and Film on such productions as “Viva Black Pool”, “Persuasion”, “Coming Down the Mountain”, “Grow Your Own” and most recently “In the Hands of the Gods” and “The Edge of Love”.

She was born in Latvia, studied in Moscow and lives in New York where she got the best possible teacher of Animated Independence - Bill Plympton, in whose studio she worked on his 3 features and countless shorts, and learned a lot how independent animation studio works. She also learned how to make animated films independently - fast and cheap. With the lessons learned, Signe started producing films on her own and regularly travels to festivals with the films.

Andris started working in 1998 as a composer and guitar player, while his career in the animation field began in 2004, consisting in working as a sound designer, sound engineer and dubbing director for animation film such as “Shrek 2”, “Shark Tale”, “Ice Age 2”, “Flushed Away”, “Shrek 3”, “The Simpsons” or “Surf.s up”.

S-a născut în Letonia, a studiat la Moscova şi trăieşte la New York, unde l-a avut drept profesor pe Bill Plympton, în al cărui studio a lucrat la numeroase scurt metraje şi la cele 3 lung metraje ale sale, şi unde a învăţat multe despre studiourile independente de animaţie. A învăţat de asemenea cum să facă filme independente de animaţie – repede şi ieftin. Cu tot ceea ce a învăţat, Signe a început să-şi producă propriile filme, călătorind regulat la festivaluri.

He is able to save most, but one time he arrives too late. The animal dies, and that breaks the veterinarian’s heart.

One night the animals that he has treated come to him in a dream. He receives love and forgiveness. When Veterinarian wakes up, his heart has healed.

Andris a început să lucreze în 1998 ca musician şi compozitor, iar cariera sa în animaţie s-a lansat în 2004, când a început să lucreze ca sound designer, inginer de sunet şi director de dublaj voci pentru filme de animaţie ca “Shrek 2”, “Shark Tale”, “Ice Age 2”, “Flushed Away”, “Shrek 3”, “The Simpsons” şi “Surf.s up”.

Povestea unui veterinar cu inima frântă Un veterinar face consultaţii la domiciliu ca să trateze animalele bolnave. În cele mai multe cazuri reuşeşte să le salveze, dar o dată ajunge prea târziu. Animalul moare, frângându-i inima veterinarului. Într-o noapte, animalele pe care le-a făcut bine îl vizitează în vis, aducându-i iubire şi iertare. Când veterinarul se trezeşte, inima lui e vindecată.

Eveline Ketterings Director / Regizor, Sound Designer Eveline Ketterings (born in Rotterdam, 1965) works as theater- and filmmaker, performer and opera singer. Her first ‘official’ film work was done in 1998. Most of her work concentrates on ‘confrontation’ and ‘creating new values’. Since 1999, she’s made experimental works in which she often performs the leading role herself. More and more she became a filmmaker though she still loves to performe and make theater.

Eveline Ketterings (născută la Rotterdam, în 1965) face teatru şi film, şi lucrează ca actriţă şi cântăreaţă de operă. Primul ei film “oficial” a fost făcut în 1998. Majoritatea operei ei se concentrează pe “confruntare” şi “crearea de noi valori”. Din 1999 a făcut opere experimentale în care de multe ori a jucat rolul principal. Historically, International Critics’ Week is the first “parallel” section of the Cannes Film Festival. It has steadfastly remained true to its tradition of discovering new talents. It was conceived by the French Union of Film Critics in 1962 to showcase first and second feature films by directors from all over the world. International Critics’ Week presents a very selective programming of seven feature films and seven shorts in Cannes so that the films can get a greater visibility. The Critics’ Week Grand Prix is awarded by the press.

Din punct de vedere istoric, Semaine de la Critique este prima secţiune “paralelă” a Festivalului de Film de la Cannes. Şi-a respectat întotdeauna tradiţia de a descoperi noi talente. A fost înfiinţată de Uniunea Criticilor de Film din Franţa în 1962, ca să prezinte primul sau al doilea lung-metraj al unor regizori veniţi din toată lumea. Semaine de la Critique are un program foarte selectiv care prezintă la Cannes şapte lung-metraje şi şapte scurtmetraje, asftel încât filmele să aibă o vizibilitate cât mai mare.

Jaime Ícaro works on a weekly TV magazine. At the end of another dull working day he receives a fax from Teresa, his girlfriend, breaking up from their one year relation.

The Ludwigsburg European Short Film Biennale is located at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, one of the youngest and internationally most renowned German film schools.

The festival started in 1994 and now takes place every second year in July. It is dedicated to young European filmmakers: directors up to the age of 35 can apply with films up to 35 minutes.

The competition has an emphasis on films that reflect European reality in a challenging way. In 2007 the Short Film Biennale had a special focus on young cinema from Romania.

Bienala de Scurt-metraje Europene de la Ludwigsburg are loc la Academia de Film Baden-Württemberg, una dintre cele mai tinere şi renumite şcoli germane de film din lume.

Festivalul a fost fondat în 1994, şi are loc în prezent o dată la doi ani, în iulie. Este un festival dedicat tinerilor cineaşti europeni: regizori de maxim 35 de ani pot participa cu filme de maxim 35 de minute.

Competiţia se axează pe filme care reflectă realităţile din Europa într-un manieră originală. În 2007, Bienala de Scurt-metraje a acordat o atenţie deosebită tinerilor cineaşti din România.

CRISTIAN MUNGIU Born in 1968 in Iasi, Cristian Mungiu first graduated from Foreign Languages in his native city before coming to Bucharest to study Film Directing at UNATC (1994-1998), where he wrote and directed 8 short-films. After the graduation he worked as 1st AD for foreign films shot in Romania, like “Train de Vie” and “Beowulf”. In 2002 he directed his first feature film, “Occident”, and one year later he founded, together with Hanno Höfer and Oleg Mutu, the production company “Mobra”. In 2007 he won the Palme d’Or at Cannes with “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”.

DAVID FLYNN David is motion picture literary agent in the “Independent Film Group of leading talent and literary agency UTA”, representing top filmmakers, actors and technicians, especially on the American market. UTA is one of the leading Hollywood agencies, which represents, among other Oscar nominees and winners, Ethan and Joel Coen. Within UTA, David also develops film finance strategies for independent features. He is an active member of BAFTA and a regular attendee at key international film festivals, including Cannes, Toronto and Sundance, always searching for new talents.

His five short films have all had a great success on the international film festival circuit. Highlights include Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Bucharest, Slamdance and South by Southwest. Comparisons have ranged from Peter Greenaway to David Lynch to Alfred Hitchcock. The recurring theme of childhood frailty - alongside his painstakingly designed interiors have established Jamie as “an indie auteur-to-watch.”

Dimitris Kerkinos lucrează din 1999 pentru Festivalul Internaţional de Film de la Salonic şi Festivalul de Documentar de la Salonic (TDF), unde coordonează secţiunile “Cinema-uri Naţionale” şi “Omagiile şi Retrospectivele Regizorilor”. Din 2002 programează şi coordonează secţiunea “Balkan Survey”. Din 2004, Dimitris predă de asemenea Antropologie Vizuală la Universitatea Panteion, din Atena, şi a ţinut mai multe seminarii despre cinematograful balcanic, cubanez şi latino-american.

BERNARD PAYEN Bernard Payen – editor in chief of “Travelling Avant” (1992-1999) and of “Objectif Cinema”, website since 2000, also in charge of the radio programme “The Night’s Pasangers” since September 2007. He is also in charge of the publications at the Cinematheque Française in Paris and Short Film Coordinator at the International Crtic’s Week (Festival de Cannes).

ANNA HOFFMANN Anna Hoffmann, born in 1962 in Hamburg, studied media science and cultural anthropology and worked as a programmer, curator, film critic and translator before joining the team of the Berlin Film Festival as programming coordinator and member of the selection committee of the International Forum of New Cinema in 2000.

DIMITRIS KERKINOS Since 1999 he has been working at Thessaloniki IFF and Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (TDF), coordinating the National Cinemas and Directors’ Tributes and Retrospectives. He has been programming and coordinating the Balkan Survey section since 2002. Dimitris is also teaching Visual Anthropology at Panteion University, Athens, since 2004, and has led various seminars on Balkan, Cuban and Latin American cinema.

ANDERS ANNIKAS He was born in 1980 in Falun, Sweden. At present he is the manager of “Swedish Images”, the Swedish section of Göteborg International Film Festival. He also works as a journalist and comic book writer.

NATALIE LETTENEWITSCH Natalie was the programme coordinator of the Ludwigsburg European Short Film Biennale 2007. She has been working as a freelance editor for several film institutions and festivals such as the German Film Museum Frankfurt, the film magazine “Schnitt”, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis, and for the editorial board of 3sat television.

With a degree in Classical Literature from Sorbonne, she later did a training at Arte France. After being a member of the Onda Curta Jury of IndieLisboa 2005, she became part of the programming team for short films selection.

Shane is the Director of Programming for Channel Zero Inc, an independent Canadian broadcaster.

Prior to this he was Director of the Canadian Film Centre’s Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto. He directed the short film Goodbye To Love, has written about film for the Canadian publications “Xtra!” and “Cinema Scope”. In 2006 he joined the Short Film Programming team for the Sundance Film Festival.

He was born in Ceánuri, Spain, in 1961. He has a degree in Psychology from the University of the Basque Country. In 1990 he began his professional career in the Film Unit of the Department of Culture of the City Council of San Sebastian, participating in the founding and first steps of the magazine “Nosferatu” and of the film series with the same name. He has been involved in the San Sebastian events - International Fantasy and Horror Film Week. Since 2002 he has managed the KIMUAK program for the distribution of Basque shorts.

TUDOR GIURGIU Tudor is the founder and president of the Transilvania Int’l Film Festival, the most important Romanian film festival, founder of the production company Libra Film, the film distribution company “Transilvania” and of the “REPUBLIK” magazine, director of several commercials and pop video. His debut feature “Love Sick” was selected in Panorama section of 2006 Berlinale and was presented in more than 30 international film festivals around the globe. Between 2005 – 2007, Tudor Giurgiu served as General Director of Romanian National Television (TVR).

After that he joined Nikola-Film Studio, he participated in important European co-Productions such as “The Sun” and “Father and Son” by Alexander Sokurov. In 2007, he established his own company – a-one films.

From December 2006 to February 2008, she managed the PHARE/Pre-Media Support Programme “Strengthening the audio-visual sector in Romania”. In May 2008 Renate will launch a worldwide cultural society based in Berlin, VILLA KULT, which will primarily be a creative meeting place for artists and lovers of arts in order to find new and revolutionary ways of expression.

SIMON PERRY In 1982 Simon founded his own production company, Umbrella Films, which has produced or co-produced 10 feature films to date. Since 2000 Perry has worked as a lecturer at the International Filmschool in Cologne, and as a film selection correspondent for the Cannes Film Festival. He is president of “Ateliers du Cinéma Européen” (ACE), a Parisbased initiative that provides advanced training for European 86

Since 1992 he is commissioning editor in the cinema department of ARTE in Strasbourg, and since 1994, head of this department. Since the year 2000 he has been in charge of the department dealing with the relation between ZDF and ARTE. RIK VERMEULEN He studied engineering and film in Amsterdam and Stockholm, produced a number of short films and has worked for the Rotterdam IFF since 1998, coordonating the festival’s Film Office, a mediator between filmmakers, distributors, sales agents and press. He has been involved in the Transilvania International Film Festival since its beginning, in 2002, and at present he is the executive director of the festival. Rik is also Cinelink – Industry Office coordinator for the Sarajevo Film Festival, and coordinator of the CentEast – Warsaw Screenings a film market for newly finished films for Central and Eastern Europe.

A fost implicat în Festivalul Internaţional de Film Transilvania de la început (din 2002), în prezent fiind directorul executiv al festivalului. Rik este şi coordonatorul Cinelink – Industry Office pentru Festivalul de Film de la Sarajevo şi coordonatorul CentEast – Warsaw Screenings, o piaţă de film pentru cele mai recente filme din Europa Centrală şi de Est.

NexT International Short and Medium Length Film Festival is an initiative of NexT Cultural Society.

Festivalul Internaţional de Scurt şi Mediu Metraj NexT este o iniţiativă a Societăţii Culturale NexT.

NexT Cultural Society was created in order to keep alive the memory of film director Cristian Nemescu and sound-designer and composer Andrei Toncu and aims at promoting their works by all means and through all channels, and, at the same time, to support, educate, encourage and stimulate young filmmakers, to protect their rights, to keep them informed on the opportunities and the legislation in the field.

Societatea Culturală NexT a fost constituită în memoria regizorului Cristian Nemescu şi a sound-designer-ului Andrei Toncu, cu scopul de a menţine vie imaginea celor doi, de a le promova operele prin toate mijloacele şi pe toate canalele, dar şi de a sprijini, educa, promova şi stimula tinerii cineaşti, de a le apăra drepturile, de a-i informa asupra oportunităţilor şi legislaţiei din domeniu.
