According to The Origins of Music, a flutelike perforated thighbone of a young cave bear was found in 1995. It is believed that this is the oldest musical instrument so far known. Tests done on the bone shows that it is possible to product a variety of sound on this object, lending support to the idea that it may have been used as a sound or signal aid.

In 1906, Frank Alvah Parsons established the first academic interior design program in the nation. Parsons understood interior design as both a critical discipline and a social force. Today the concept and design of the interior are explored in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Interior Design program. Its research-intensive approach prepares you for a competitive, rapidly evolving marketplace. Sensitivity to Context / In the Interior Design program, you work in small groups with faculty, developing design concepts for residences, institutions, commercial spaces, and special building types. Each interior is treated as a unique confluence of requirements, and work reflects an emphasis on environmental stewardship and cultural sensitivity. Building a Foundation for Practice / Most students enter this major through the Foundation program, in which you explore two- and three-dimensional space and the environmental aspects of design. In art and design history and theory courses, you acquire research, writing, and critical reasoning skills. A six-semester studio sequence introduces interior and architectural issues of increasing complexity. You develop designs using physical models, collage, and digital renderings. During your senior year, you can apply to participate in the Design Workshop, in which students construct a full-scale project. Lectures by prominent designers bring fresh viewpoints into the classroom. Designing for cities, and the people who live and work in them, is a challenge no discipline can tackle alone. In the Bachelor of Science in Urban Design, the country’s first stand-alone undergraduate degree program in urban design, you’ll develop an understanding of how cities function and learn how design can help shape the way urban centers evolve. You explore complex topics such as sustainability, technology, and infrastructure and employ urban design to reenvision and transform urban life.

GREENMAPPING For an aerial mapping workshop in Union Square, students use low-cost mapping tools like balloons, kites, and remote-control airplanes.

Explore the Urban Ecosystem / The study of cities begins at home. In this program, you examine New York City as a complex urban ecosystem. In coursework and projects, you develop creative practices, study processes of urban transformation, and enjoy extraordinary educational, cultural, and civic opportunities not available anywhere else in the world. You can also explore problems facing other cities through courses, international collaboration, and study abroad. Students interested in the urban design major are encouraged to take the program’s first-year curriculum but can also begin study in any of the first-year programs at Parsons. The Urban Life Examined / Urban design students are motivated by a desire to engage with the social, cultural, aesthetic, and ecological dimensions of urban life. BS Urban Design is based in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons, along with the Integrated Design, Design and Management, Environmental Studies programs, and a number of related graduate programs. The School of Design Strategies encompasses innovative programs that apply design processes to the study of cities, services, and ecosystems. BS Urban Design is part of a suite of new interdisciplinary undergraduate programs at The New School that examine the 21st century’s greatest challenges—globalization, urbanism, social justice, and sustainability. Students in the program share a core curriculum with students in the BA Urban Studies program offered by Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Studies and collaborate with them on projects.
