Take the headache out of QC A Labotec workshop on quality control in the laboratory LABOTEC, in partnership with Buchi in Switzerland, presented a workshop on “Quality control in the lab – from incoming raw material to final product and label verification”. The event focussed on achieving precise, accurate and reproducible results on various processes such as kjeldahl, purification and spectroscopy for better control thereof, automation possibilities and peace of mind. The workshops were held in Cape Town, KZN and Midrand, and delegates attending were from the various industries of food, feed, environment and pharmaceuticals. Nicolai Kraut from Buchi covered the topic of using the Kjeldahl method for nitrogen, protein or steam distillation from sample to achieving final results in the most flexible way. She also explained how to add value to extraction processes used in industry. Agnes Kolb, also from Buchi, extended his knowledge to everyone on Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR), the solutions one can use to control quality
sample preparation and support the kind of process efficiency that enhances accuracy, reduces rework and lowers costs, thanks to features such as user guidance and data management. New XPR balance models also include the SmartPan weighing pan, which delivers results in half the time by minimising aircurrent effects while delivering excellent repeatability – even when weighing in a fume cupboard, production environment or hightraffic area. Streamlined sample- and datahandling help to assure process accuracy and results security as well. Mettler Toledo’s long-time expertise in weighing devices, along with its record of trendsetting design improvements,
and nutritional facts, the various applications both in-lab and at-line, as well as the calculations for return on investment. The talks were rounded off with practical sessions to demonstrate the processes discussed and provide opportunities to discuss individual requirements. The interaction at the event was productive and everyone could enjoy the various viewpoints, as well as taste the delicious snacks at lunch-time while collaborating with fellow delegates.
