DENTAL PRECAUTIONS FOR A HEALTHY PREGNANCY Today, we live in an increasingly toxic world, and are just beginning to realize how our exposure to these toxins influences the development of our children both in utero and after birth. Autism, developmental delay, behavioral problems such as ADHD are on the rise. It is no secret that toxins in your body can greatly affect your developing baby. One of the greatest sources of heavy metal toxicity is the mercury in your dental fillings. As much as 75% of people do not realize that mercury makes up as much as 55% of the black fillings. Every time you chew, drink and eat hot or eat acidic food, bleach your teeth and grind your teeth, you release harmful mercury vapor into your body as well as swallow bits of the corroded or chipped off fillings. Liquid mercury is easily vaporized even below room temperature and is highly ionizable. It is the ionized mercury vapor that can enter our cells and cause numerous disruptions in the human body. As mercury builds up in the body, especially the fatty tissues of the brain and nervous system, it wreaks havoc not only on your body, but can have disastrous effects for your children that can haunt them for the rest of their lives. It is important to get your body ready to grow a new human being. Mercury toxicity had been linked to Autism, brain fog and memory issues, suicide, gut distress, chronic headaches, numbness and tingling in hands and feet and emotional problems including depression, anxiety and unexplained anger. Numerous studies have confirmed that mercury vapor is being constantly released during chewing. Higher levels of mercury vapor are released during tooth grinding or eating hot foods and drinking hot beverages. In addition, tooth whitening releases extremely high amounts of mercury vapor as does polishing dental fillings during cleanings as well as drilling out old mercury dental fillings. No one can argue that as parents, protecting our children is our primary responsibility and duty. Studies have confirmed that ionized mercury easily penetrates the placenta and is detectable in the breast milk of mothers. While there are no studies on the effects of this mercury exposure to the developing baby and the nursing infant due to ethics of such experiments, concerned and responsible mothers should be informed of its probable dangers. In addition, the FDA has advised the discontinuation of mercury containing fillings in "growing children" following several laws suits. A ten year study, which followed children for the age of 8 to the age of 18 confirmed that children with mercuryfilled teeth have higher incidence of health problems. This same study helped to identify a gene variant that predisposes boys to mercury toxicity even at small levels. Women who are planning to get pregnant may want to consider removing mercury containing dental fillings from their teeth prior to conception and to evaluate themselves for mercury toxicity. Since drilling out mercury fillings releases high amounts of mercury, concerned mothers may want to protect themselves by having their dentist follow the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology's

by Dr. Alex Shvartsman DDS, ND MAGD, IBDM, AIOAMT

(IAOMT) protocol for safe dental mercury filling removal. Unfortunately, few dentists are aware of this protocol and fewer still adhere to it strictly. Dr. Alex Shvartsman of Long Island Center for Healthier Dentistry is the only accredited member of the IAOMT on Long Island. He has successfully passed the IOAMT written toxicology exam, as well as the oral presentation on his adherence to the protocol. He currently serves on the Educational Committee of the IAOMT. Heavy Metal Detox: Removing your mercury fillings prior to pregnancy can have a tremendous benefit in reducing mercury exposure for your developing child. However, when these fillings are not removed safely, it can do more harm than good by exposing you to large levels of mercury. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) have developed a safe mercury removal protocol. Find a dentist accredited by the IAOMT to make sure the protocol is followed properly. Prior to mercury filling removal, it is important to find out the heavy metal load in your body and how well you eliminate heavy metals, especially mercury. A test exists which not only determined your mercury toxicity but also how well your kidneys and liver eliminate heavy metals. While many people use chelating agents such as DMSA, DMPS and chlorella, our body has powerful heavy metal detox mechanisms, which are both effective and safer. It is important to optimize the detoxifying ability of your organs, then up regulate their detoxifying ability by using specific botanicals, only then is it safe to remove your mercury fillings. Once your body is clean, you can carry your baby with a peace of mind. A heavy metal detox, followed by IAOMT's safe mercury filling removal protocol will make for a healthier mother and a healthier child. As a Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Shvartsman is well versed in heavy metal testing and detox protocols. In addition, he offers Biocompatibility testing so that you can be sure that the dental materials used in your mouth are safe for you.

Intravenous Ozone Therapy (DIV) The Safe & Painless Answer for HPV by Dr. Howard Robins What is genital HPV infection? According the U. S. Center for Disease Control, genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. There are 40 or more types of HPV that can infect the genital areas of men and women as well as the throat and mouth! HPV may cause serious health problems, including genital warts and certain cancers. While there is no certain way to tell who will develop health problems from HPV and who will not, most cases of HPV will be eliminated by our immune system before it causes any health problem. Most people who become infected with HPV don’t even know they have it. So how do you get HPV? Anyone who is having or has ever had sex can get HPV. This is true even for people who only have sex with one person in their lifetime! HPV is passed on through genital contact, usually during vaginal and anal sex. What most people don’t know is that HPV may also be passed on during oral sex and simply from genital contact. HPV can be passed on even when the infected person has no signs or symptoms. Most people don’t realize they are infected, or that they are passing HPV on to their partner. A person can still have HPV, even if years have passed since they have had sexual contact with an infected person. It is also possible to get more than one type of HPV. Most important to note is that a pregnant woman with genital HPV can pass the HPV on to her baby during delivery. What are the risks from HPV? Fortunately, most people with HPV never develop symptoms or health problems. Most HPV infections (90%) go away by themselves within two years. Unfortunately, sometimes, HPV infections can and will persist and may cause a variety of very significant and serious health problems. Health problems that can be caused by HPV include: • Genital warts which can be painful. • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), fortunately a rare condition in which the warts grow in the throat. • Cervical cancer. • Other rare but serious cancers, including genital cancers, and a type of head and neck cancer called oropharyngeal cancer which is in the back of throat, and may extend to the base of the tongue and tonsils. Is there a test for HPV? HPV tests are available to help screen women aged 30 years and older for cervical cancer. These HPV tests are not used to screen men, children, or

women under the age of 30 years. There is no approved HPV test to detect HPV in the mouth or throat. How is HPV normally treated? What is the success? According to the government, there is no treatment for the virus itself, but only for the health problems that HPV can cause. This is not true. The standard treatments below unfortunately often fail and a recurrence of the problem happens sometimes a year or more later. • Genital warts can be removed with treatments applied by doctors using acid or liquid nitrogen. • Cervical cancer is most treatable when it is diagnosed and treated early. Women who get routine Pap tests and follow up as needed can identify problems before cancer develops. Here surgical scraping or cryosurgery (freezing) is typically used also, unfortunately far to often with re-occurrence. • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) can be treated with surgery or medicines. Curing RRP often requires many treatments or surgeries over a period of years. Is there another choice and if the normal treatment fails can it still be used? Yes! There is a safe and proven effective treatment that has been used in Europe for many years and now available here, called Direct Intravenous Ozone Therapy (DIV). This treatment destroys the virus wherever it is living, genitally and orally outside or inside the body. Simply, it is the only treatment that does this and with no pain at all! What happens is, medical grade oxygen and ozone gas is safely and painlessly injected by trained professionals into a vein (you can’t get an embolus from oxygen, only from nitrogen gas), the extra ”O” in the ozone molecule acts like a glue stealing an electron from anything in our body that it can latch onto. Healthy cells in our body contain natural anti-oxidants that protect them against damage or destruction. Only pathogens like HPV are destroyed anywhere they are living. In addition organic ozonated oils can be used either externally and/or internally to safely and painlessly assist and speed up the eradication of this horrible infection. So please don’t wait! It’s absolutely possible to completely eliminate HPV from your body. WHAT HEALTH TRACK ARE YOU ON? Hippocrates stated that ‘you are either building health or losing health every day.’ What track is your health and life on at this moment in time? Where do you envision your health to be in 10 years? Are you on track to getting disease or are you on track to living to 100 and living a great life with family and friends? Harvard Medical has documented for some time now that the human body has 100 to 110 years of good quality life inside. Every year, you are getting older chronologically but your body is made to age gracefully. There are many that say that they don’t want to live to 100 years old. Many people can’t imagine living that old when they think of their health being poor for all those years. But what if your body was functioning to its fullest potential and you felt great? We all know people that are in their 90’s that are playing golf and are living on their own, great mind and enjoying their grandchildren. But everyone also knows people that are 60 and are on 5 different medications and aren’t getting any healthier and are miserable. You also know people that are 40 and have chronic fatigue syndrome and migraines and are going to be sick for decades and are going to take more and more drugs as everything they are experiencing is going to get worse.

DEATH BY INFLAMMATION Some of the worst symptoms are created in chronic illness by our body trying to help us. The inflammatory response is a good example of this. We have all experience inflammation. Usually we experience inflammation as pain. It could be a toothache, a migraine, all types of stomach aches, knees/hip/ankle and arch pain. Where there is chronic pain there is inflammation. Why does our body do such a good job of beating us up with inflammation? The only reason that I have ever seen explained through research for inflammation to exist is to provide a defense against bacteria. When we are injured, or the body thinks we are injured, its biggest concern is infection. Inflammation is the way that the body gets all of the germ-fighting white blood cells to where they are needed. Inflammation is the body turning itself inside out. It is working to get all of those defensive cells out of the body to where it thinks they are needed. The problem is that there are so many signals that the body can get that trigger this infection response. Most of them don't even involve infection. The messengers that signal inflammation are called cytokines. Cytokines can be released due to physical stresses, the main physical stress is eating a food we are allergic to. Eating foreign substances such as genetically modified foods can also trigger inflammation. There are other factors in the environment such as various toxic substances which we are exposed to at home and work. There is the presence of auto-immune antibodies in our system that can create a chronic inflammatory response. These inflammatory chemicals cause inflammation throughout the body, not just in one area. One place that is especially sensitive to this inflammation is the brain. These chemicals can activate different parts of the brain that cause different emotions. Usually, these emotions are not ones that create positive experiences in our life. The parts of the brain that are most sensitive to inflammatory cytokines are the ones that cause feelings of anger, irritability, depression and even despair. Because these inflammatory parts of the brain are activated it is very hard to think clearly. It definitely makes it much more difficult to think at our best. And how are we going to do out best navigation through the challenges of life if out brain is not working for us? Not to mention actually getting to the place that we want to get to in our work, our relationships and our artistic pursuits and other endeavors. Because these chemicals released by our body can be so irritating to our brains, it is not uncommon for people to self-medicate through over-the-counter

drugs, legal drugs like alcohol, prescription or street drugs. It is no surprise that the person most likely to use drugs is the least happy person. Sure, there are factors in life that can influence this choice, but one factor that has been consistent in most people with an addiction history that I have worked with is the presence of food allergens creating a chronic state of inflammation in the brain. Over a long period, the parts of the body that are designed to slow down the inflammatory process wear out. It is like you are driving a car with the gas pedal pushed down to the floor on full power all the time. Then trying to control the speed of that car with the break pedal. Eventually, the brakes wear out and the car would go speeding out of control. In the same way when our body is in the inflammatory state over a long time, we wear out our ability to stop the inflammation. For some, people this may happen as a young child but depending on our body we may loose our ability to control inflammation in our twenties, in our thirties, or later. Some people are surprised when the brakes of their body give out and they start with inflammation that they can't seem to control. Prescription drugs may help this temporarily, but as long as the body is getting inflammatory signals from the environment, then stronger and stronger drugs will be needed. The problem with stronger and stronger prescriptions medicines is that they have a suppressive effect on our entire immune system. They just don't suppress the part of the immune system that is giving us our chronic inflammation but they suppress the parts that do protect us from things like infections and cancer. So of course, the key to treating all kinds of pain from chronic inflammation is not to just look at the inflammation as the whole problem. It also helps to do a bit of detective work and try and figure out what is causing the inflammation in your body. Personally, I think testing is better than guessing. I like to test the two longterm allergy systems in our body for reactions to foods that may be hidden from us. That is often one solution to inflammation.

NO PAIN/NO GAIN OR NO NEED TO STRAIN? Part 4 A growing body of research suggests that contrary to popular belief, “physical activity” is not synonymous with “exercise.” The distinction has to do with intensity. For example, when energy expenditure is matched between longer bouts performed at a lower intensity and shorter ones involving more vigorous work, the latter are more effective for increasing the maximal rate at which our muscles consume oxygen (VO2max). This is important because a higher VO2max is associated with reduced risk of disease. The take-home message is that all kilocalories burned are not created equal so if you want to maximize your health and fitness, you must consider how long it takes you to accumulate the energy you expend. An appreciation for intensity as a critical determinant of what you can achieve via exercise harkens back to the day when “no pain, no gain” was the rally cry in the gym. However, once exercise hit the mainstream, this approach was supplanted by a more user-friendly one based on the notion that once a relatively benign minimum-intensity threshold was met, volume was all that mattered. An example is the Surgeon General’s recommendation that we should accumulate 10,000 steps per day with no distinction made for whether we do so by strolling, walking, speed walking, jogging or running. While this is a catchy concept and great for the many companies marketing pedometers nowadays, it is shortsighted if you consider the aforementioned research. In a review article, Swain and Franklin conclude that for energy-matched bouts, vigorous exercise brings greater cardioprotective benefits including more of a reduction in diastolic blood pressure, better glucose control and a greater enhancement of aerobic capacity. For the purpose of their review, they define “vigorous” as exercise requiring at least 60% of the “maximal aerobic capacity” (i.e., VO2max). Needless to say, compared to simply counting steps, quantifying effectiveness in this manner would be far more daunting for the average exerciser. Intensity can also be quantified according to heart-rate reserve, which represents the capacity of your heart to beat above its resting rate. For example, when your heart is utilizing 60-84% of its reserve capacity during aerobic exercise, intensity is considered vigorous. This method of monitoring how hard you are working is more practical because heart-rate monitors are easy to use and relatively inexpensive; however, the average exerciser would not know his/her maximal heart rate, which is required for the calculation. The end result is that many individuals simply “guess-timate” how hard they are working based on how difficult the effort seems to be. In the 1950s, Swedish psychologist Gunnar Borg introduced “perceived exertion” as a way to quantify intensity of effort. Specifically, Borg created a scale spanning 6 (no exer-

by Dr. Fred DiMenna, Ph.D., C.S.C.S.

tion) to 20 (maximal exertion) which allowed subjects to pinpoint how hard they felt they were working. He chose this range to roughly correspond to heart rates when values were multiplied by 10 based on average resting and maximal rates of 60 and 200, respectively. In the ensuing years, Borg’s RPE (ratings of perceived exertion) scale became quite popular and is still used in both research and “the field.” For example, the American College of Sports Medicine considers an RPE of 14-17 indicative that vigorous exercise is being performed. Using RPE to gauge intensity does not require a VO2max measurement, heart-rate monitor or any other extraneous device so it is an attractive alternative for application in any exercise setting. However, the subjectivity involved can be problematic. This is exemplified by findings from a recent study by Canning et al. at York University in Toronto. In this investigation, the researchers recruited 129 subjects aged 18-64 to perform 2-3 minutes of walking and/or jogging at a speed which the subject felt corresponded to a “light,” “moderate” or “vigorous” degree of effort. Prior to beginning these tests, researchers defined each of these terms so that subjects understood what they should be experiencing. Speed was recorded and all subjects wore heart-rate monitors to measure how hard they were actually working during the bouts. Following these tests, subjects were asked to walk for three minutes at the minimal pace they believed would elicit health benefits and, once again, speed and heart rate were recorded. Finally, a VO2max test was done once the self-regulated bouts were completed. When results were tabulated, heart-rate responses during the self-regulated bouts corresponded to 51.5 +/- 8.3%, 58.7 +/- 10.7% and 69.9 +/- 11.9% of the maximal rate for “light,” “moderate” and “vigorous,” respectively. When these percentages were compared to ranges that are considered acceptable for these descriptors (i.e., light, 50-63%; moderate, 64-76%; vigorous, 77-93%), it was apparent that other than for light activity, the majority of participants underestimated what moderate and vigorous exercise should comprise. Furthermore, when directed to walk at a pace they thought would provide health benefits, subjects chose one that elicited a heart rate of 57.4 +/- 10.5% of the maximum rate, which is below the moderate range that is at least required for this purpose. Given these apparent difficulties in understanding what exercise should involve, the authors conclude by suggesting that new subjective descriptions are needed so that exercisers can better understand intensity guidelines and what is required to benefit from the activities they perform. Fred DiMenna is a two-time Natural Mr. United States and retired WNBF drug-free bodybuilder who has a PhD in exercise physiology from University of Exeter in the U.K. He is main or contributing author of over 30 articles listed on PubMed and serves as an adjunct professor at both Columbia Teachers College and Adelphi University. PILOXING: New Fitness Trend

Have you ever heard the saying“If something is too good to be true it probably is?” Well, that is not the case with this hot, new workout called Piloxing. This exciting fitness program is a great mix of boxing, pilates and dance that will have you working up a sweat within minutes. This high-energy workout uses intervals and barefoot training to burn maximum calories and increase stamina. In addition to pilates and boxing movements, the intensity of the workout is increased with the use of weighted gloves, which assist in toning the arms as well as maximizing cardiovascular health. Piloxing is a complete trifecta by blending the power, speed and agility of boxing with the targeted sculpting and flexibility of pilates, which combine to ensure a complete total body, muscle toning, fat burning workout. This Piloxing aerobic fusion will make you feel physically and mentally empowered. Each Piloxing class is 60-minutes long. This includes a 45-minute cardio session which includes a 10-minute warm-up. The final 15-minutes includes floor work which primarily focuses on abdominals, glutes and stretching. That balance creates a total body workout. Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer Viveca Jensen is the founder and CEO of the Piloxing Academy which has been featured on many national television shows and in high-profile magazines. Jensen’s studio is a favorite training mecca for celebrities and regular clients who want a fun, effective and inspiring workout experience. I had the opportunity to visit the Piloxing Studio last February in Burbank, California. Just being able to be there and experience that positive Piloxing energy was completely uplifting and motivating. It is that energizing experience that inspired me to become a Piloxing instructor. Piloxing is a venue where a group of people can get together and feed off each others strength and power. This positive mental attitude transfers into an exciting workout experience. “Piloxing has changed my life by improving both my physical and mental

Piloxing is one of many types of aerobic exercise. Some others include step, walking, cycling, running, low impact aerobics, dance and tennis. A variety of cardio aerobic classes are available at most gyms. Try out different classes to see which ones you like the most. Those will be the ones you will most likely stick to. These exercises should be performed for 30-60 minutes, three to five times per week. Before starting any exercise program, check with your doctor first if you are: pregnant, inactive, have heart disease, or any major health condition. I have been teaching Piloxing at Synergy Merrick and Baldwin for almost 2 years and I have changed the lives of many of the members by creating the mind-body connection which can be carried over into their everyday lives. This workout has helped create complete balance in both my fitness level and my personal life. My goal is to educate people of the importance of fitness and health and how this is not a short term quick fix, but rather a way of life. I also stress to my clients that there are other ways that you can burn calories without stepping foot in the gym. For instance, they can park their car further away and walk, take the stairs instead of an elevator, or try to stand for a few minutes every hour. My love of music finds it way into my workouts, and I am constantly attending fitness workshops to stay current with the latest fitness trends. My goal is to educate my clients to live a more healthy lifestyle including how to eat better and staying active doing something they enjoy. The key to a healthy lifestyle is to eat a balanced diet and everything in moderation. Avoid sugar, processed foods, and limit alcohol consumption, making them the healthiest person they can be. I have been an Aerobic Instructor and Personal Trainer for over 8 years. I strive to provide my clients with the most effective and innovative workouts. I teach a variety of classes which include: Piloxing, Spin, Sculpt, Pound and Synergy 360. I enjoy teaching a wide array of fitness classes. My love of health and fitness comes through in my classes and training. I feel it is important to diversify your workouts to avoid overtraining, create muscle confusion and prevent boredom. Piloxing is such a great workout because it does just that. It is an interval workout which is constantly varying your heart rate to create the highest calorie burn in the shortest amount of time.

Is YOUR Clean Really CLEAN? As the holidays approach we are preparing for a festive season of parties and dinners in our homes with friends and loved ones! The weather is cooler so we button up our windows and doors to keep the winter chill out and increase heat to keep our “toesies” from getting too cold. Of course, no one wants a dirty home when guests arrive so we scurry to our local grocery stores in search of cleaning products that will make our homes sparkle and smell lovely. Sounds blissful…right? Unfortunately, the combination of all these activities can actually introduce unwanted problems into our homes and upon our families. The flu season is upon us and we are bombarded with news of various infectious diseases from MRSA to Enderovirus to Ebola. More than ever our activities keep us indoors and with focus on energy efficiency, there is little to no ventilation in our houses and apartments. Off the shelf cleaning products, full of toxins and VOCs, are used improperly thus causing a false sense of security AND introducing chemicals and by-products to our loved ones… Toomas Niemann, President / CEO of healthEhabitats™, states, “The majority of infectious diseases commonly found in our homes and in public places are nosocomial in nature, meaning they are transferred via “touch”. Unknowingly, we touch our faces, including our eyes, nose, and mouth several times every minute. A comprehensive home sanitizing program in parallel with sound hand hygiene practices are our best allies during the winter sick season.” Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing. Cleaning removes germs from surfaces – whereas sanitizing and disinfecting actually destroys them. Cleaning with soap and water to remove dirt and most of the germs is not enough. You may want to consider disinfecting for an extra level of protection from germs. While surfaces may look clean, many infectious germs may be lurking around. Since germs can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, it’s essential to properly and frequently sanitize and disinfect the high touch surfaces in your home from kitchen countertops and faucets to bathroom showers, fixtures, door handles and more. The use of a residual germ-barrier treatment will minimize germ and virus population and drastically reduce risks of infectious disease transmission. In the Kitchen: Did you know…there is 200 times more fecal matter on counters and surfaces in the kitchen than on a toilet seat? Germs that cause foodborne illness can be spread throughout the kitchen and get onto hands from cutting boards, utensils, counter tops, and

food. Over 90% of shopping carts at supermarkets have tested positive for fecal matter which then gets on our food items and grocery bags, then into our cars, and finally on our kitchen counters and in cabinets and refrigerator. In the Bathroom: Did you know… every time you flush with an open lid, bacteria spray into the air and around your toilet? Scientists at Leeds University tested the air above toilets and found that the germ, C. difficile, which causes violent diarrhea and vomiting, can be spewed up to 10 inches above toilet seats with every open flush. These germs were found on the sides of the toilet, on the top, and on the floor—even when the toilet wasn’t in use. In other words, even an unoccupied, open bowl can spread bacteria. Our Spray’nGO™ sanitizing system and Germ-Barrier Treatments provide peace of mind by effectively sanitizing surfaces without the use of harsh chemicals and providing a long-term continuous yet passive solution to surface health. Safe and non-toxic, it is also certified to be used on food contact surfaces without requiring a rinse! We apply our germ-barrier treatments to high touch areas and surfaces throughout the home to continually break down bacteria, viruses, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A routine cleaning program, similar to those offered by organizations such as Teresa’s Home Cleaning, is the foundation of a healthy home. For added protection and security, there is healthEhabitats! Whether you have symptoms of poor health or you just want to live in an environment that supports strong health and well-being, our services are ideal for you and your family. ON THE COVER: SARAH TIEFENTHALER Designer Whey Ambassador How did you get into fitness? Were you always fit? I have always been physically active. I grew up in a very small town in Iowa where your only option was to go outside and play, being active was just a part of life. Did you play sports in school, if so, what? What was your favorite sport? I did and my favorite was volleyball. I played volleyball the most, both for the high school team as well as a club team. What is your typical day like? What is your fitness routine and eating plan? (From morning to evening describe what you do eating wise and fitness wise) In the morning, I drink a glass of water and have some plain yogurt with honey, then my son Oliver and I take a walk with the stroller to the local coffee shop for an almond milk latte. I usually teach a private or group YOGAqua class in the morning and/or early afternoon. For lunch, I'll either have a salad or maybe some sushi. Later in the day, before dinner, I will take my son for a walk to the park and after that we will come home and make some dinner with "Dada." Most often, I will cook up some quinoa and veggies. What is it that you like about yoga and paddle boarding (talk about how you combine the two and why you feel this is an excellent way to get fit)? What do I NOT like about yoga and paddle boarding?? Yoga alone is such a wonderful way to be active; it's physically, mentally and spiritually beneficial. And for me, being outdoors, specifically on the water, is very healing. Putting the two together is simply the best thing in the world! A YOGAqua class is 90 minutes, with the first 30 minutes dedicated to paddling which is the perfect cardio warm-up. The remaining hour is for Yoga on the board. An anchor is tossed into the water to keep the board stationary while going through a Vinyasa flow. Performing Yoga poses on the floating paddle board is obviously more intense as you're performing already challenging poses on an unstable surface. By doing so, you're engaging the core more intensely as well as the stabilizing muscles. And if you fall into the water, it's just part of the fun! I try to encourage my students not too take themselves too seriously but instead to let go and have a good time and the best part is, once you reach Savasana (final resting pose), you'll realize you thought about nothing else the entire 90 minutes and are able to completely relax. It's like a 90 minute vacation. How did you start your business and do you find it demanding being chief, cook and bottle-washer? How do you stay balanced?

YOGAqua became a vision of mine when I returned home from my first Yoga Teacher Training that took place Costa Rica. I was really longing for an activity that would keep me in nature because after spending an entire month in the Costa Rican jungle, it's a little difficult to jump back into the city. With luck (or fate), the same week I returned home, I was invited to try paddle boarding at Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey. With Yoga fresh on my mind, I attempted a few poses on the board and found it both challenging and fun AND a solution to my longing for an activity outdoors. I immediately began spending hour after hour on the SUP boards putting together Yoga sequences customized for a moving surface. A few short months later, YOGAqua was born in July of 2011. It can be demanding taking on all roles for my business but it certainly doesn't feel like "work Do you stick with one kind of eating plan (vegan, clean, GF, etc or a combination) and why? I feel like I have tried every kind of diet there is; vegan, vegetarian, no carbs, etc, especially after pregnancy, trying to lose the baby weight but what I've found that works best is simply everything in moderation-everything that's good for you anyway. I focus mostly on fruit, veggies, and protein but I don't hate myself if I have a bagel or a piece of cheese every once in a while. If I splurge and have some sugary treat, then I just work out harder the next day. I guess I'd call it the "common sense diet." Do you use supplements, if so which ones and why? Occasionally, I will take a multi or Vitamin C supplement but I mostly try to get the nutrients I need from my meals which encourages me to make healthy choices. However when I need an extra boost of protein, Designer Whey smoothies are a delicious way to get exactly what I need. How did you get involved with Designer Whey Ambassador search? I was contacted directly regarding joining the Designer Whey team. Having always been a fan of their products it seemed like a natural fit for us to team up since we have the same mission of healthy living. Also, don't beat yourself up about every little calorie, just make smart choices and drink a lot of water! Are you involved with any volunteer work, community projects, etc, and why? NY DOCTOR HELPS SAVE EBOLA PATIENTS WITH OZONE THERAPY spread of this virus?

Dr. Robins (standing) training health workers in ozone therapy in Sierra Leone at the height of the Ebola crisis. Dr. Robert Rowen, an ozone doctor from CA (on gurney) is filling in as a patient.

by Christine Lynn Harvey Dr. Howard Robins is a world-renowned expert on medical ozone therapy for treating a variety of medical conditions. He recently traveled to Sierra Leone West Africa to help train health care workers in the use of ozone therapy to help combat the deadly Ebola virus. NL: Ebola, also known as Hemorrhagic Fever, is a Level 4 virus. Tell us why it's so dangerous: Dr. Robins: Viruses in general have different degrees of ability to transmit disease and different ability to harm us. Ebola is one of the most dangerous types of viruses because it can very quickly replicate in itself in your body and kill people and some animals for that matter, very easily. The main concern is that it could be used by terrorists as a bio-weapon to be spread around in airports and public places to kill lots of people, so dangerous in fact that the Sierra Leone Minister of Defense, Alfred Palo Conteh and The President, His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma became very concerned. NL: There is a lot of confusion being generated by the mainstream media, either due to willful ignorance or inability to grasp some basic scientific facts about how Ebola is actually spread. Can you explain?

Dr. Robins: First of all, you have to be in contact with a patient who has it. And the contact isn't being in the same room as the person. It's not airborne in the typical sense. It's not about breathing it in and breathing it out. And for some reason, mosquitoes can't transmit it either. That's how Malaria, Yellow Fever and Dengue Fever are spread, which actually kills more people in Africa and around the world every year than Ebola does. However, they discovered that the virus can be spread through airborne water vapor droplets from an infected person's breath or saliva and you would have to be in very, very close contact with them in order to be infected. Additionally, this infected droplet would have to enter your eye, mouth or nasal passage to infect you. You will not catch it from touching an infecting person, unless you have a cut on your skin, or unless you do not sanitize your hands immediately after touching the person. People often touch their face, eyes, nose, mouth, several times an hour during the day and this is how the virus is actual spread, by having the virus enter the mucosal tissues. That is why healthcare workers need to follow a strict protocol of disrobing properly and sanitizing their hands and the vector areas where the infected person was being treated. The virus can also be contained in any bodily fluids mucus, pus, breast milk, semen, saliva, urine, blood, feces and vomit. This is also why frequent and thorough hand-washing is so critical. Outside the body, the virus can only live for about 2 hours. In the late stages of the viral infection it is in the sweat as well. NL: Is there a fear of this virus spreading through water, say if a dead Ebola victim's body is not properly buried, like the way cholera or typhoid can be spread? Dr. Robins: That's a good question. At this time, the virus has not mutated into something that can live in food or water and then infect people, unless you are eating raw food made by a person who is symptomatic. There is a claim that this was originally spread by eating "bush" meat - bats and wild game that could have been carrying the virus, but that is just a claim, no one knows for sure at this point though very possible. There are so many conspiracy theories, but the air is not a way it is carried for sure. The healthcare workers that traveled to West Africa on the airplanes would have infected everyone on the planes they came back home on. The fact that it is not spreading that way is a good sign; otherwise, we'd have a lot more cases of Ebola springing up right now.

Dr. Robins: Ebola is not as easily spread as the mainstream media has led everyone to believe. The people living in the house of the first victim, Thomas Duncan, that came from Liberia to Dallas, did not contract it from coming into contact with Duncan, who eventually died from Ebola. But some of the health care workers have contracted it because they were caring for NL: How does the ozone work to kill the Ebola virus? Duncan when he was symptomatic. But it is not as easy Dr. Robins: First, you have to understand how the virus to contract, as you would think. works. This virus is similar to other viruses like HIV, NL: Please explain why Ebola is not as easily spread as Hepatitis C, and a common Herpes virus also known as Epstein-Barr that causes Mononucleosis or Chronic the mainstream media would have us believe: Fatigue Syndrome. All these viruses look like a snake. Dr. Robins: Just because you come into contact with On the outside, are structures called glycoproteins that someone who has Ebola, you will not necessarily con- latch onto the various cells of our body, like glue. You can get tective layer breaking these structures apart, literally these symptoms anywhere from 2 to 21 days after contact "exploding" the virus. One 1986 study shows tact with the virus. It can also live up to 3 months in that ozone inactivates the Polio virus. sperm. If you are going to get Ebola, you will most commonly get it in 8-10 days after contact. The mainstream media has made us all believe that anyone and everyone are susceptible. I was at ground zero for Ebola, traveling around Sierra Leone, drinking, eating, conversing with people all in public places and I have not tested positive, nor contracted the virus.

NL: How do you use ozone prophylactically, to protect yourself from even contracting Ebola and then treating Ebola once you contract it?

Dr. Robins: The ozone destroys all things (molds, bacteria, yeasts, harmful free radicals) that don't belong in the body, so by eliminating these things, you are boosting NL: So why is there so much misconception about the your immune system to a very high level. It is given intravenously and is extremely safe with virtually no

adverse reactions. During ozone therapy, we prescribe a program of probiotics to replace the good bacteria in the body. Since your body’s immune system will now operate at a very high defense level, the likelihood of you getting the virus is very minimal, and if you do get the virus, it may feel like nothing more than a feeling like a cold is coming on. If you do develop symptoms, your chances of survival, we believe are raised into the high 90 percentile as opposed to the 50%60% that is now the norm. I have been doing this for 24 years with over 210,000 treatments with absolutely no negative outcomes. With ozone therapy, Ebola is like "bullets bouncing off Superman's chest." I, with Dr. Robert Rowen, MD a wellrespected ozone doctor and teacher from California, developed two Ebola protocols utilizing “Robins Fast Trak” and “Robins Round the Clock.” The first one is ozone treatment every three hours four times a day. The latter is a treatment is every three hours around the clock. NL: Not all people who contract Ebola die, so it is really a matter of how well your immune system is working? Dr. Robins:Yes. Getting the ozone therapy started on day 1 or 2 before it overwhelms the body is key. You must understand that the Ebola virus pushes the immune system down like a spring that is getting loaded for days until finally the spring pops like a jack-in-the-box releasing a huge amount of chemicals in the body known as cytokines which causes an inflammatory response in the body. This suppresses the T and B cells of your immune system, allowing the virus to continue replicating until it attacks your vital organs interfering with their normal processes. Once your vascular system starts hemorrhaging, nothing can easily stop it and death follows soon after. It's not the virus that kills you, it's actually your own immune system that kills you. Ozone modulates your immune system. If your immune system is overactive, say in the case of Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus, it slows it down; if it is underactive, as in AIDS or Ebola, it brings it back up. NL: You went to Sierra Leone to train healthcare workers in ozone therapy and you actually gave the President, His Excellency, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, a private ozone therapy treatment. Tell NL readers why the problem is not being solved over there. Dr. Robins: He saw how beneficial and safe it was and gave us permission to enter the Ebola centers. The very next day, the Minister of Health was removed from his position as “Ebola Czar” and the Minister of Defense Alfred Palo Conteh took over. I went on a national Sierra Leone TV show called The Podium. The people on the panel included the man who was in charge of burial for Ebola victims. The interviewer grilled this man over the fact that graves were being dug ahead of time, instead of focusing on preventing deaths and the number of bodies being put into each grave was also a concern. When I got to speak, I said, "I'm going to put you out of business with ozone therapy." We met with Defense Minister Palo shortly after, and he asked us “Why aren't we already getting to work on it?” I left very early the next morning to head home to New York, but Dr. Rowen and a doctor from Sierra Leone, Kojo Carew, M.D. headed to the centers to start the work. They received a call from the Minister of Health saying that if any of the healthcare workers were to receive ozone treatments, or do the therapy on patients, they would lose their jobs. We do not know why this happened, however, we believe from reliable sources that the people running everything are skimming off the top since there are millions of dollars flowing into Sierra Leone from all around the world to handle burial, cremation, etc. One airport worker who saw me on that TV show and later found out how our efforts to help Ebola were stopped at the last minute with ozone therapy said, "All the ministers here are corrupt. What can we do? This is Africa." Unfortunately, there is more money in death than in saving life. Dr. Howard Robins with over 22 years of clinical experience using medical ozone therapy here in New York, considered by many to be one of the world's foremost clinical experts on its use with over 210,000 treatments performed, is also available and willing to answer your questions about it. He can be reached at his Manhattan office by calling 212-581-0101.

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST EBOLA: Boost Your Immune System Naturally The best way to protect yourself against Ebola is to refrain from traveling to the West African countries afflicted with the epidemic, staying away from cities and hospitals where Ebola has been identified and public venues where there are people concentrated in a small area (theater, mall, indoor soccer stadium, etc). Constantly practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands and keeping your hands away from your face, eyes and nose. Consider ozone therapy (see article on page 10 of this issue) and read the plan for boosting your immune system below. Get enough rest and sleep. Stress wears down the immune system. Do not overexercise, smoke or drink alcohol which lowers your immune system defenses by creating free radical damage that your body must use energy to repair. Drink plenty of purified water and consider taking the supplements below suggested by health.harvard.edu: Selenium. Some studies have suggested that people with low selenium levels are at greater risk of bladder, breast, colon, rectum, lung, and prostate cancers. A large-scale, multiyear study is currently in progress to look at the effects of combining selenium and vitamin E on prostate cancer prevention. Vitamin A. Experts have long known that vitamin A plays a role in infection and maintaining mucosal surfaces by influencing certain subcategories of T cells and B cells and cytokines. Vitamin A deficiency is associated with impaired immunity and increased risk of infectious disease. Vitamin B2. There is some evidence that vitamin B2 enhances resistance to bacterial infections in mice, but what that means in terms of enhancing immune response is unclear. Vitamin B6. Several studies have suggested that a vitamin B6 deficiency can depress aspects of the immune response, such as lymphocytes' ability to mature and spin off into various types of T and B cells. Supplementing with moderate doses to address the deficiency restores immune function, but megadoses don't produce additional benefits. And B6 may promote the growth of tumors. Vitamin C. The jury is still out on vitamin C and the immune system. Many studies have looked at vitamin C in general; unfortunately, many of them were not well designed. Vitamin C may work in concert with other micronutrients rather than providing benefits alone. Vitamin D. For many years, doctors have known that people afflicted with tuberculosis responded well to sunlight. An explanation may now be at hand. Researchers have found that vitamin D, which is produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight, signals an antimicrobial response to the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Whether vitamin D has similar ability to fight off other diseases and whether taking vitamin D in supplement form is beneficial are questions that need to be resolved with further study.

Vitamin E. A study involving healthy subjects over age 65 has shown that increasing the daily dose of vitamin E from the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 30 mg to 200 mg increased antibody responses to hepatitis B and tetanus after vaccination. Zinc. Zinc is a trace element essential for cells of the immune system, and zinc deficiency affects the ability of T cells and other immune cells to function as they should. Caution: While it's important to have sufficient zinc in your diet (15-25 mg per day), too much zinc can inhibit the function of the immune system. Source: Harvard Health Publications www.health.harvard.edu The following herbs are specific to fighting viruses and may be helpful against Ebola: Pau d'arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa), also known as lapacho or ipe roxo, is native to the Amazon. The inner bark contains phytochemicals of which lapachol has been found in laboratory tests to be active against herpes simplex types I and II, influenza, polio virus and vesicular stomatitis virus. It works by preventing viruses from replicating. St John's wort.(Hypericum perforatum) is an herb that is most commonly known to treat depression, promote wound healing and ease the pain of neuralgia, fibrositis and sciatica. Hypericin and pseudohypericin, chemicals found in St John's wort, are highly effective against enveloped viruses like herpes, HIV and Hepatitis C that tear off a piece of cell membrane when they leave an infected cell and wrap themselves in it, as a way of fooling the body's immune system. Hypericin and pseudohypericin attack these fragments but not the body’s living cells. Hyperforin, a constituent of St John’s wort has been shown in clinical studies to kill human malignant cell lines like leukemia. Garlic (Allium sativum) has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties mainly due to allicin which produces garlic's pungent odor and taste. Allicin and its sulphur compounds, ajoene, allyl sulphides and vinyldithiins kill the common cold virus, various strains of influenza and herpes simplex virus types I and II. Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) roots and flowering parts have been shown in several clinical trials to be effective in reducing the severity and duration of the common cold, upper respiratory tract infection and viral bronchitis. Olive leaf (Olea europea) contains a bitter substance called oleuropein, one component of which, elenoic acid, has been identified as a potent inhibitor of several viruses including influenza, herpes, polio and coxsackie. Calcium elenolate, a derivative of oleuropein, is lethal to every virus (except reovirus and poliovirus) researchers tested it against (using both in vitro and in vivo studies). Studies demonstrated that the components of olive leaf extract are also toxic to a wide range of bacteria, protozoa, yeasts, parasites and fungi and it has potent effects against anthrax, smallpox, botulism and the plague. The best form of herbs to take is tincture form. If avoiding alcohol, place a few drops of the tincture in hot water or tea and let the alcohol evaporate. If taking supplements in capsule form, chose a high quality brand standardized for the active photochemical (ie. 15% oleuropein in olive leaf extract). Do You Know What’s Inside Your Supplement Capsules? by Neil Thanedar, CEO Labdoor.com Most consumers know what supplements they are buying, but the ingredients of the capsule containing the supplement is often overlooked or unknown. Below are some of the main ingredients found in gelatin and vegetarian capsules. Gelatin What is it: Gelatin is a protein that contains collagen and is derived from the hair, nails, and bones of animals such as pigs, cows, chickens, and fish. Purpose: Gelatin is included in most capsules for its binding and gelling ability, which ease the product’s digestion. Gelatin is able to dissolve within minutes of being ingested and allows for the body to efficiently absorb the supplement. Gelatin is also able to mask bad tastes and odors (this could be a significant concern with fish oil supplements, where gelatinous capsules may hide possible rancidity). Gelatin is commonly used in food such as cheesecake, pies, gummy candies, and Jell-O. Other Facts: Some religions and diets do not allow animal-derived gelatin to be consumed. While gelatin is mostly safe, it has been linked to allergy in sensitive individuals. Plasticizers What is it: Plasticizers are substances that are added to make a material more flexible, durable, and easier to handle. Some plasticizers include polyhydric alcohol, natural gums, sugar, water, glycerol, sorbitol, propylene glycol, sucrose, and acacia. They are present in both hard and soft gelatin capsules. Water is the plasticizer in soft gelatin capsules. Purpose: Plasticizers "reduce the rigidity of the gelatin and make it pliable" in capsules, which ultimately makes the capsule more durable and flexible. Other Facts: Plasticizers are found in both gelatin and vegetarian capsules. Preservatives What is it: Preservatives are substances that help protect the capsule against decay and spoilage. Some include glycerin, cetylpyridinium chloride, aluminum acetate, benzyl alcohol, and butyl paraben. Purpose: They serve as antimicrobial agents, which are able to extend the capsule's shelf-life. Other Facts: Preservatives can be found in a variety of commonplace products, including foods, household items, cosmetics, and medications. Paraben preservatives are present in many cosmetic products and can be absorbed through the skin. These controversial preservatives have shown estrogenic activity in the body and were linked to breast cancer in clinical study, which has inspired many cosmetic

and health-care brands to create paraben-free products. Corn Starch What is it: It is a gluten-free, natural, and flavorless carbohydrate powder derived from corn kernel. Purpose: It serves as a binder and disintegrant in capsules. Its binding properties help hold the tablet ingredients together pre-ingestion while its disintegrant properties help the capsule break-down and allow the supplement contents to be released for absorption. Other Facts: Corn starch is commonly as a thickener in foods such as gravy, soups, and other food without little flavor and fat. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/HPMC (Vegetarian Capsules) What is it: HPMC, also known as hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose or hypromellose, is a non-toxic synthetic modification of cellulose. Purpose: HPMC is a vegetarian alternative to gelatin because of its versatile gelling properties. Other Facts: Its other properties include being a viscolizing (thickening) agent, coating polymer, and bioadhesive. HPMC is also present in cosmetics, paints, and food. It is a more expensive alternative to gelatin and gluten. It has been shown to lower total and LDL cholesterol in men with mild-to-moderate hypercholesterolemia and is most effective when taken with a meal. Soy Polysaccharide (Vegetarian Capsules) What is it: According to the NIH, soy polysaccharide is "sourced from dehulled and defatted soybean flakes, is [a] soft white to light-tan fibrous powder and does not contain starch or sugar. It has 75% dietary fiber with the main components including five types of higher polysaccharides, viz, cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, gum, and mucilage." Purpose: It is used in capsules as a disintegrant to help the gastrointestinal tract break down and absorb the supplement. Other Facts: Soy polysaccharide, mixed with ethyl cellulose, has the potential to deliver drugs to the colon. The soy polysaccharide-ethyl cellulose capsule coating has been shown to remain intact in the digestive system for up to nine hours before breaking down and showing presence in the bladder and colon. THE 5 SKINNY HABITS: How to Change Your Life in 5 Weeks What if I told you that the new science of losing weight and keeping it off, of achieving well-balanced emotional and physical health, is not "new" at all? It can be found in writings dating back to the 12th-century physician and philosopher Maimonides, and even further back 2,400 years ago, to the Greek father of medicine, Hippocrates. It's mind-blowing to read ancient books by scholars and doctors whom I call the Master Physicians and to see how similar their caveats are to what you'd read in the New England Journal of Medicine today. Living a healthy life begins with forming healthy habits. Optimum health and weight loss are not simply about nutrition and exercise. I believe that failure to keep to a diet is not a lack of willpower or motivation. Most diets fail because they don't change the way we think about food. If we ignore the mind-body connection, we cannot achieve long-term success. It's only a matter of time before we revert to our original habits, even with the best intentions and resolutions. The 5 Skinny Habits has you change just one habit each week for a total of five weeks, allowing you to steadily create new food and exercise patterns for healthy weight loss, and a healthy lifestyle. It's crucial to not jump stages in this program. The goal is to introduce one positive habit each week, and keep the rest of your routine exactly the same. I describe the habits and their psychology in detail in the book - The 5 Skinny Habits: How Ancient Wisdom Can Help You Lose Weight and Change Your Life Forever. In summary, these are the steps to changing your habits for good: Week 1: Have a Light meal. In your first week, replace breakfast with something light, like a fruit bowl, salad, cereal, or eggs and a piece of toast. You may choose to have it at the meal you most often skip. Skipping a meal often leads to overeating or snacking on the wrong foods. For most people, this meal will replace your breakfast but you could have it for lunch or dinner. Week 2: Protein and veggies. Replace your largest meal of the day, usually dinner, with one consisting of protein and vegetables. Some of my favorites include teriyaki salmon, roasted chicken or grilled steak with sautéed vegetables, and chicken salad. The main advantage of this meal is that the appetite isn't over-stimulated, which prevents overeating. Research has shown that people eat more when given a variety of food choices than when given the same type of food. If you want, you can have seconds of the main dish and also have a glass of dry red wine with this meal, which has many health benefits.

by David Zulberg

Week 3: Protein and grains with only seconds of veggies Keep up the changes from the previous weeks and now replace your third meal, which consists of protein and healthy grains, and starches. Grains may have a bad rep but according to the US Dietary Guidelines, they are actually an important part of a well balanced diet. At this meal, you should only have extra helpings of veggies. Since you're eating multiple foods for your main dish at this meal, it will be very hard to overeat if you are taking extra portions of vegetables, which are low in calories. Week 4: Exercise. Studies show that exercise improves weight loss success and reduces body fat, not just weight. The Master Physicians and modern science teach that exercise prevents disease and reduces stress levels. During week four, start with 10 minutes of cardio three times a week and gradually work towards 30 minutes five times a week. I will show you how to do this by just adding 2 minutes of exercise a week. If you are already maintaining a good exercise program, simply continue with the previous habits and allow them to sink further into your subconscious mind during this week. Week 5: Substitute your snacks. This week is all about snacking between meals, replacing your usual snacks with water, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, or fruit between meals. We call this the 'Substitution method' because you are acknowledging the craving and substituting a healthier way to resolve it. When you are ready, you can even enjoy any snack between meals within certain guidelines called 'Smart Exceptions'. The habits are flexible, so you will be able to eventually customize the program and apply it to your specific schedule and preferences. It is a lifestyle change and it will only take you 5 weeks to set these new habits in motion. You will "unlearn" negative behavioral habits and relearn how to listen to and rely on the innate ability of your body. At the point of change, you will not be overcoming your nature. You will be returning to your instinctive nature. Most importantly, maintaining your weight loss success and 'new-found' health will be a natural consequence of the positive habits you developed during the process of losing weight and gaining health. pickles. 5. When the beans are ready, store in jars, with lids tightened, in the fridge. These will keep, refrigerated, for 1 year.

HOT SMOKY SPROUTS (about 1 quart) 4-5 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon peppercorns 1 tablespoon chile pepper flakes 1 pound Brussels sprouts, halved 2-3 jalapeños, cut into strips or rounds 1 grape leaf (optional)

DILLY BEANS (about 1 gallon) 15 cloves garlic 6 pounds green beans, trimmed 1-2 dried red chile peppers 6 bay leaves 2 tablespoons pickling spice, or 2 teaspoons dill seed (or, better, 3-4 fresh dill seed heads), 1 1/2 teaspoons whole black peppercorns, 1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seed, and 1 teaspoon coriander seed 1 gallon Basic Brine (1/2 cup unrefined sea salt to 1 gallon unchlorinated water) Grape, oak, or horseradish leaves, enough to top the jar or crock (optional) 1. Lightly mash the garlic cloves with the side of a knife, just enough to break them. Layer the beans in the jar (the visual effect is stunning if you can arrange them vertically). Incorporate the garlic, chile peppers, bay leaves, and the spices as you go, distributing equally into four wide-mouth quart jars or a 1-gallon jar or crock. 2. Pour enough brine over the beans to cover them. Tuck the grape leaf, if using, or a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the beans. Cover loosely. Store any leftover brine in the fridge (it will keep for a week; discard thereafter and make a new batch, if needed). 3. Set aside on a baking sheet to ferment, somewhere nearby, out of direct sunlight, and cool, for 6 to 10 days. During the fermentation period, monitor the brine level and top off with the reserved brine, if needed, to cover. You may see scum on top; it's generally harmless, but consult the appendix if you're at all concerned. 4. If you're fermenting in clear containers, you'll see the beans begin as a vibrant green. As fermentation begins they turn a drab olive, a result of the acids interacting with the chlorophyll. The brine will become cloudy; this comes from the production of lactic acid. On day 6 you can start to taste your beans. They're ready when the brine is cloudy, the color is drab, and they taste like cucumber

BRINE (MAKES 2 QUARTS) 1/2 gallon unchlorinated water 2 tablespoons unrefined sea salt 2 tablespoons smoked salt 1. Put the garlic cloves, peppercorns, and chile pepper flakes in the bottom of a 1-quart jar or crock. Arrange the Brussels sprouts and the jalapeños so they're wedged below the shoulder of the jar. For a crock, make sure you have 4 inches of headspace. Pour in enough brine to cover the vegetables. Store any leftover brine in the fridge (it will keep for a week; discard thereafter and make a new batch, if needed). 2. Place a grape leaf, if using, or piece of plastic wrap over the vegetables. For a crock, top with a plate that will rest atop the pickles, and a weight, such as a sealed, water-filled jar, to keep things in place. For a jar, use a sealed, water-filled jar or ziplock bag as a follower-weight combination. 3. Set aside on a baking sheet to ferment, somewhere nearby, out of direct sunlight, and cool, for 7 to 14 days. During the fermentation period, monitor the brine level and top off with the reserved (or fresh) brine solution, if needed, to cover. You may see scum on top; it's generally harmless, but consult the appendix if you're at all concerned. 4. As the vegetables ferment, they begin to lose their vibrant color and the brine will get cloudy; this is when you can start to test your pickles. Begin tasting after a week. They're ready when the sprouts are sour enough for your palate. 5. When they're ready, store in jars, with lids tightened, in the fridge. These Brussels sprouts will keep, refrigerated, for 6 months. Note: The sprouts continue to ripen over time; the heat takes on more character. "Excerpted from Fermented Vegetables (c) Kirsten K. and Christopher Shockey. OZONE: The Miracle Medicine Oxygen’s reputation precedes it. The human body is largely composed of it, most of our metabolic energy production comes from it, and all our internal processes are regulated by it. In fact we can’t live without it. When every cell is properly oxygenated, the immune system can function and maintain itself relatively undisturbed. So it’s clear that oxygen is an integral piece of the wellness puzzle, but what about ozone? Only one little molecule separates it from our beloved oxygen, yet the term is bound to leave many scratching their heads. And no, we’re not talking about the ozone layer or ozone pollution. The medical ozone we speak of is known for ridding the body of toxins, eradicating sickness, and giving hope to those who otherwise would have spent their lives riddled with chronic disease. Together with oxygen, it just may be the diseasefighting superhero you never knew existed.

too unusual, but contrary to our unfounded fears, it’s not only safer than almost all traditional medications, but also effective when they have failed. As a founding member of the American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAO) and The International Association for Ozone in Healthcare and Dentistry (IAOHD), Dr. Robins has lectured around the world on medical ozone’s benefits. Ozone therapy is remarkably safe when done correctly, but there are side effects—just not the kind you want to avoid. People fall asleep easier, sleep better, and have more energy. Their nails and hair grow longer, stronger, and faster. Their complexion is healthier, and their blood circulates better. Also, it helps add endurance during exercise.

We target people who have not been able to get well using traditional medicinal care. A seasoned veteran at separating fact from fiction when it comes to his work, Dr. Robins welcomes questions and looks forward to opening doors for those who are no longer willing to accept that disease is just a fact of life. Healing happens, if you know where to Ozone acts like a super anti-oxidant and is a super detoxifier begin. that selectively, like glue, attaches to and eliminates all viruses, fungus, yeast, and mold, as well as every form of bacteria, toxic metal, and Though it is necessary to have your first consultative visit in his pathogen from the body. Since 1990, Dr. Robins has administered more than 185,000 safe Direct IV ozone therapy and Major Autohemotherapy treatments. By combining medical-grade O2 (oxygen) and O3 (ozone gas) and safely delivering it into the body, he has joined the ranks of over 45 thousand physicians in over 50 countries across the world who have successfully eliminated distressed patients from diseases like Herpes 1,2 and 6, shingles, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Hepatitis B and C, HPV, diabetic ulcers and peripheral neuropathy, candidiasis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and even AIDS. Recently, through the targeted use of ozone therapy, he was successful in significantly reducing two patient’s Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), a painful condition (a.k.a. CRPS) that only worsens over time to a tolerable level, which had never been done before. Despite such a stellar track record, ozone therapy is not usually the treatment of choice for those patients struggling with disease. When they come to Dr. Robins for help, it’s usually because every other doctor they have tried has been unable to offer relief. “Big Pharma” would lose too much money if this nonpatentable medicine were readily available, so along with the FDA they have worked to suppress media attention. So while some other countries legally mandate the use of ozone in all pre-and postop instances to prevent infection, ours remains relatively in the dark, unaware of the benefits and impressive results of ozone. “Since childhood, we have been brought up to believe that ‘pills’ are the answer to all our health problems injecting a ‘gas’ into our veins sounds risky and
