Choosing the RIGHT Holistic Dentist When it comes to picking the best dentist to satisfy your dental needs, especially a holistic one, many people find themselves in a quandary. Unfortunately, Holistic Dentistry is not a true dental specialty, and there is no oversight, requirements or governing body for holistic dentists. This means that every holistic dentist is different and any dentist can call him or her self "holistic" "biologic" or "natural". It is up to the patient to figure out which dental practice fulfills their holistic and dental needs. You can safely bet that all “holistic dentists” do not use mercury amalgam fillings. And that one commonality is usually all it takes for dentists to claim that they are “holistic”. This is why it is important for the discerning individual to research the dentist and the dental practice as well as interview the dentist on their first visit. Some dentists may even agree to have a phone interview before seeing the patient for the first time. Membership in holistic dental organizations, like the IAOMT is a good sign, but it may only mean that they paid their membership dues not necessarily that they follow the organizations’ guidelines, attend meetings or constantly pursue Continuing Education in complementary medicine or modern dentistry. Web sites and reviews are a good start, but readers beware: anyone can write anything they want on the Internet, true or not.

Clinical Skill

Sadly, only a small percent of dentists are really adept at dentistry. This may come as a shock to most people, but the fact remains that in order to be a good clinical dentist, one must possess exceptional hand–eye coordination. While physicians have a vast choice in specialties, less than 10% go into specialties that require great hand eye coordination skills such as plastic surgery, neuro-surgery and eye surgery, while 99% of dentists HAVE TO BE micro-surgeons. Unfortunately, less than 10% have that innate skill. Generally, natural born artists that can draw and sculpt well, have excellent hand-eye coordination. In addition, the art talent is extremely valuable in dentistry since dentists need to replicate the natural tooth form by sculpting and carving dental restorations. This explains why most people are walking around with fillings and crowns that look like non-anatomic blobs and have very little resemblance to the natural tooth. Nature makes teeth look like teeth for a reason. Each cusp and groove in a tooth serves a purpose. When dentists do not reproduce this anatomy when reconstructing a tooth, the teeth may not function properly. It is no wonder why many people suffer from TMJ problems: their teeth have not been restored back to their proper natural anatomy! Just because one has the right mindset, is nice and well-meaning, does not mean he or she can deliver great, minimally invasive, pain-free and long-lasting dental care!

Ozone therapy, etc… Is the dentist practicing 1800’s conventional dentistry using nontoxic materials or is the dentist minimally invasive and is familiar with modern tooth conserving dental techniques such as Biomimetic Dentistry? By asking the dentist appropriate questions that are important to you, you can gauge by the dentist’s response if he or she is a right fit for you.

Training

What post-doctoral training in modern dentistry and alternative and complementary medicine does the dentist have? Is he a Biomimetic Dentist? Is she Accredited by the IAMOT? Does the dentist have additional degrees in a holistic and alternative health such as Naturopathy, Nutrition, Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine or Homeopathy? Is the dentist Board Certified in Biologic Dentistry? Dentistry is constantly changing; is the dentist staying current? New, more natural, healthier and nontoxic materials are available; is the dentist aware of these materials? New developments in technology allow dentists to be minimally invasive and tooth-conserving. How does the dentist you are choosing measure up in these categories??? Is the dentist golfing all the time or is he/she going to continuing education courses?

Technology

Incredible advances in dental materials, technology and techniques have great appeal to the holistic-minded individual. Various dental lasers that treat many conditions from gum disease to tooth decay, 2-D and 3-D digital low radiation x-rays allow for better diagnosis, CEREC CAD/CAM creates a perfectly fitting ceramic tooth reconstruction in a single visit, metal-free bridges and dental implants are a perfect choice for metalsensitive individuals, Dental Ozone therapy has many dental applications, as well as a variety of other minimally invasive modern technologies are available to all dentists. Unfortunately, most do not offer these modern technologies to their patients. Does the Holistic Dentist you choose offer modern minimally invasive technologies or is he/she doing things the old fashioned way just without mercury-fillings? Finding the right fit for you and your dental needs will take some investigation. Browse the Internet, Dr. Golan Dr. Shvartsman and interview the dentist. Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and Scleroderma: Can it be Reversed? YES!!! Please read on. What are they and what do they have in common? Let's first try and understand what we are up against. Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Lupus Erythematosus (LE), and Scleroderma (S) (just to mention some of the autoimmune diseases) are diseases that can all be partially or completely reversed! This is a bold statement. Conventional medicine has shown that it has no answers for these life-taking, debilitating conditions except to try and slow down the degeneration or alleviate the symptoms. RA, LE, S are called autoimmune diseases. These are diseases that have your immune system hyper (over) reacting and attacking various organs or structures of your body including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs as if they were enemies like viruses or harmful bacteria. MS is an inflammatory disease in which the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord are damaged, leading to demyelination of the nerves and scarring as well as a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms most notably muscle weakness. What they all have in common is that they can not only take your life but they usually work slowly, breaking down your body, causing many painful symptoms debilitating symptoms making your life miserable. While the outcome of these illnesses has been inevitable up to now, natural medicine has been able to find answers to improve, slow down the process and sometimes overcome the diseases. This is important as it shows that these illnesses can be overcome! It just takes the right approach, the correct combination of natural treatment methods, but they don't always work, except for intravenous ozone therapy.

What has worked so far? Conventional medicine has spent billions of dollars trying to find the cause and cure of these diseases. Most of the money and efforts, however, have been spent on finding pharmaceuticals that can relieve some of the symptoms. Natural medicine has had much better results by Cleansing and Detoxifying the body. Many natural medicine methods have met with some success. Dietary changes, acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy and meditation are just some of the methods employed that have had some beneficial but inconsistent results, unlike intravenous ozone therapy. So why have these therapies failed at times or have been so inconsistent?

1-800-NEW LIVING

by Dr. Howard Robins

Simply, each method by itself only holds part of the answer or part of the power necessary to effect the changes in our body to overcome the disease. All of us are unique individuals with different combinations and amounts of metabolic imbalances and harmful organisms affecting our immune system. Also, our immune systems are not created equal. Each of us has different parts of it stronger or weaker than that in other people. Each type of natural medicine offers benefit to help overcome some of the imbalances or destroy some of the harmful organisms in individuals resulting in a mixed bag of inconsistent results.

So what is Intravenous Ozone Therapy, how does it work and is it safe? Medical ozone it is a highly reactive gas. It has to be made "fresh" at the time of its use in a machine that passes electric current through medical grade oxygen in a special hand-blown glass tube. It can't be stored in a powder, tablet, capsule or liquid form like other medicines. Ozone is simply a non-patentable medicine (so they can't make any money from it), which is why "Big Pharma" has suppressed its use in the USA. When it enters the body, it acts like "glue" to all viruses, bacteria, fungus, yeast, mold, toxins, toxic heavy metals and parasites destroying them without harming any healthy cells in our body. Unlike the above mention harmful organisms, healthy cells have special enzymes that ward off ozone and protect themselves from destruction. By ridding the body of all these harmful disease-causing organisms. intravenous ozone therapy has been able to reverse the diseases in question as well as a host of many other diseases and illnesses. While it is not known exactly which organisms are causing the diseases, medical ozone, by destroying all of them, helps us win the war and, believe it or not, it's safe! While used in over 50 countries by over 45,000 physicians for over 70 years, the most famous study done on its safety was published in Germany in 1982. In Germany, medical ozone therapy is used pre and post-operatively to prevent infections as well as to treat most health problems. Jacobs, et al., reported in his published study that close to 400,000 patients were given over 5,500,000 treatments over a two-year period with an adverse reaction rate of .0007! There is no pharmaceutical medicine that comes even close to that safety record. It's easy to see why 'Big Pharma' is not interested in letting the news out about ozone. HOPE IN HEALTH

by Dr. Ray Omid, DC

"Walk on with hope in your heart, and can end up just as sick as everyone else. True health begins with a body that is working to the best of its you'll never walk alone" -Shah Rukh Khan Hope is an irreplaceable feeling to carry within you throughout life. It is hope that fuels us to keep striving forward in our health journey. Hope allows someone to succeed in their journey where others have 'lost' hope and turn back down an unhealthy track yet again. It is critical to have hope, but you need to have an action plan accompanied with hope in order to reach your goals. In order to understand the relationship between hope and action in health, it's important to first discuss the two diseases that affect us the most. Currently, heart disease kills 700,000 each year. Between 450,000 - 500,000 people pass away before their time each year due to cancer. When you look at the statistics, heart disease affects 1 out of 2 people in their lifetime and cancer affects 1 out of 3 people. If you do a little bit of 4th grade math and put them together, you have a 5 out of 6 chance of developing heart disease or cancer and end up like everyone else. So, if you keep doing what everyone else is doing, you have a 5 out of 6 chance of developing these diseases. The trend we have been seeing for decades is that people are also getting sick with diseases sooner in life. We have this on the top of our minds, yet many of us cross our fingers and hope that we don't develop them. This is where hope and action plans come into play. Hope is not a strategy at all. It is a quality that pulls you through the tough times. But, we have to take an honest inventory of what you need to do to protect yourself and your loved ones. You need to have 'actions steps' along with hope to make sure that you are taking care of your body and doing everything you can to not be the 5 out of 6 that develop these diseases and other sicknesses. In order to stay well and live up to your God-given potential, statistics show that if you 'go with the flow' you

ability. When you were first created, you were created with all the life you need inside of your brain to take care of your vital organs your whole life. Everything that keeps you alive is in that brain and the intelligence needs to flow from your brain down your nervous system uninterrupted. If you are waiting for symptoms to develop in order to know if there is interruption, you are doing your body a giant disservice. Symptoms of dysfunction many times are last to come. Symptoms can come when your body has been dysfunctioning for a while and is in crisis. Therefore, your body can be weakening right now and you can be symptom free. We all know someone that felt fine and the next day suffered a heart attack. So waking up and feeling fine is not a good indication of how healthy you are. In order to stay well, you need to remove anything interfering with how your body is operating, stay away from harmful things that do not promote health and give your body what it needs to thrive! Join Dr. Ray as he hosts a complimentary dinner and health talk for you and four guests. While dinner is being prepared, he will be speaking about the three components to a 100-year lifestyle, how to regain life and vitality, how to have more energy and less stress, and how to prevent medical debt and protect your number one assets. THREE DANGERS TO OUR DRINKING WATER DANGERS OF FRACKING: There are more than 500,000 active natural gas wells in the US. Each well uses 400 tanker trucks worth of water and 600 "proprietary" chemicals including radioactive substances and heavy metals many of them known carcinogens such as radium, methanol, hydrochloric acid, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, lead, mercury, uranium. 72 trillion gallons of water and 360 billion gallons of chemicals are needed to keep those 500,000 wells operational. During the fracturing process, methane gas and chemicals leach out from the well into the surrounding groundwater. Methane concentrations are 17X higher in drinking water near fracking sites. There have been 1,000 documented cases of ill health effects caused by fracking. The waste fluid is left in open pits to outgas harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that get released into the air you breath; fracking chemicals also form into acid rain once released in the atmosphere. For more info: www.dangersoffracking.com A report published in New Solutions Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy (Vol. 22(1) 51-77, 2012 “Impacts of Gas Drilling on Human and Animal Health by Michelle Bamberger and Robert E. Oswald) studied the health impact on humans, companion animals (dogs and cats), livestock and wildlife living near fracking sites. Exposure to fracking contaminants came in the form of contaminated drinking water, waste water intentionally spread on roadways and/or spills from containment pools and transport trucks. In one documented case, fracking fluids spilled into a pasture killing 17 cows in one hour. In another incident, 21 out of 60 cows that drank from a contaminated pond died and 16 failed to birth healthy calves the following season. Fracking operators also intentionally spread fracking wastewater on roadways near well sites (first used for salting the roads in winter, but then done under all weather conditions). People noticed that cats and dogs walking on these roads were licking the pads of their feet more often than usual. Pets that drank from the contaminated puddles fell seriously ill and died a few days later. agriculture uses 55% of the available water supply, yet, the US Dept of Water Resources, "Save of Water Campaign" only focuses on domestic water use as a way of saving our precious water supply. The government recommends that you use low flow shower heads, efficient toilets, water-saving appliances, fixing leaky faucets, etc. but never mentions the real impact on our water supply from animal agriculture. For more info www.cowspiracy.com DANGERS OF ROUNDUP: Monsanto's Roundup should be outlawed and if you have any sitting in your garage, return it to Monsanto immediately for a refund (several calls to the NYSDEC/Dept of Waste Management provided us with no answers on how to properly dispose of the stuff - they suggested we use it up or give the rest away). If you continue to use this stuff, you are helping to poison the water and air of Long Island. A recent EPA study revealed that the main ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, is the predominant herbicide in both air (86%) and rain (77%). According to Organicconsumers.org, "A 2013 study published in Entropy showed that glyphosate is related to debilitating diseases like gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, autism, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. The study says the negative impact on the human body is "insidious and manifests slowly over time, as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body... (Editor's note: glyphosate interferes with enzymes and amino acids produced by gut bacteria that detoxify xenobiotics (chemicals and substances not produced by the human body). A 2012 study published in the Archives of Toxicology showed Roundup is toxic to human DNA even when diluted to concentrations 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications. Industry regulators and long-term studies look at glyphosate in isolation, instead of looking at Roundup's full formulation, which includes secret and inert ingredients." According to an article in Scientific American's June 2009 issue, one inert ingredient in Roundup may be more deadly than glyphosate itself: polyethoxylated tallowamine, or POEA, which killed human embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells. The research team suspects that Roundup might cause pregnancy problems by interfering with hormone production, possibly leading to abnormal fetal development, low birth weights or miscarriages. OF COURSE YOU HAVE LYME DISEASE If you live on Long Island, you have Lyme disease. I can only say this after years of practice with thousands of patients. There is no point wasting time, effort and money if you have Lyme symptoms, you have Lyme. It would be great to prove this with testing. However, research into the effectiveness of Lyme disease testing shows that it is less than 50/50 as to whether your results will be accurate. This means you have a better chance of getting a right answer by flipping a coin. I have seen this many times as people that test negative for Lyme after exposure to a tick or suspected symptoms later come back positive, and then negative again, and then positive again. It is only through trial and error that I became convinced that testing does not tell us if a person has been exposed to Lyme. Not only are the tests unreliable but we are only testing for one of the microorganisms that can infect us after exposure to ticks. Even if you don't test positive to antibodies to one of the known bacteria that creates Lyme symptoms, you may have been infected by one of the many, many others that we are not able to test for. So what are the symptoms of Lyme? Inflamation in the joints, like unexplained knee, wrist, shoulder, hip or back pain. Unexplained emotional symptoms like anxiety and depression. Unexplained mental dysfunction such a foggy thinking, confused or delusional thoughts, compromised memory including inability to remember names, words, faces, etc. Unexplained organ dysfunction such as adrenal fatigue and chronic thyroid problems and unexplained weight gain. Any symptom created by chronic inflammation can be a result of Lyme. Other myths that we have to address in practice is that of the Lyme epidemic. Many people imagine this to be like the plague where you have either been exposed or have not been exposed. However, the bacteria that affects us in Lyme disease has been with us for a long time. A long time means before there were even human beings on the planet. The many species of bacteria that are transmitted from ticks don't specifically infect people but many other animals. These bacteria have evolved with mammals over eons. When scientists recently defrosted the 5,000 year old ice man, they found Lyme bacteria in his DNA. New research has shown that these bacteria that have long associations with humans and other mammals not only create symptoms but have a

profound impact on our behavior and thought processes. A recent study of the bacteria that creates cat scratch fever showed the the bacteria affected the behavior of mice. Mice that were infected engaged in risky behavior that made them more likely to be caught by cats. The cats are then more likely to continue the cycle by consuming infected mice. Lyme is clearly not the only microbe that infects us that is working in this way. It is probably more accurate to say that every microbe that can infect us, is capable of changing our chemistry to create the optimal environment for the bacteria. The two conventional approaches to inflammation are to either fight the bug with antibiotics, or to fight the inflammation with prednison. Neither one of these has proven to be a safe or effective long term solution. One major reason is the bacteria is responsive to the presence of antibiotics and goes into various hiding strategies. Changing shape, shedding it's cell wall, or going to various tissues impervious to the immune response are all ways that the bacteria not only persists, but becomes undetectable through blood work. A better approach than panicking at the thought of ticks everywhere is to accept that your function, or that of your child, family member, etc is already being affected by the microbes that we are carrying. We can never eliminate these microbes. Lyme, for example, is an intercellular parasite that exists within our own cells. A much more effective strategy is to correct the changes being made by the bacteria and to make sure the immune system is being as effective as possible in controlling the infection. To address the changes being made by the microbe, the most effective test is the neuroscience exam. The exam tests our cortisol levels four times throughout the day through saliva. One urine sample is used to check for brain chemistry. We are looking to answer the question, is our brain all "brakes," all "gas," both, or neither? The only other essential piece of Lyme cases is the test for hidden food allergens. These are present in nearly every Lyme case I have worked with. Some foods can greatly weaken our ability to deal with Lyme, while others can cause us to over react with auto-immune symptoms, depending on the allergy. Stop chasing one bacteria and instead focus your efforts on creating an internal state that allows you to be healthy no matter which organisms you have been exposed to or may be exposed to in the future.

NO PAIN/NO GAIN OR NO NEED TO STRAIN? Last issue, I concluded an eight-part series highlighting research which confirms that high-intensity interval training is a time-efficient way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. The take-home message was that if typical aerobic exercises like walking/running and cycling are done in an intermittent manner with recovery periods interspersed, the highest sustainable pace can be exceeded during the repeat “work intervals.” This creates a greater stimulus overload and the body adapts to the same or even a greater extent compared to its response to traditional endurance training, which involves moderately intense exercise performed continuously for an extended period. This implicates intensity as a critical factor, which is problematic because there is a lot of confusion regarding this exercise program variable. When I began exercising in the ‘70s, “no pain, no gain” was the rally cry for the growing segment of the population that recognized the importance of regular physical activity. However, as is the case with most ideologies, the passage of time brought an about-face and by the time the ‘90s rolled around, those who called the shots in the world of exercise were spreading the word that physical activity did not have to be excruciating to be beneficial. Their motive was apparent. The myriad benefits of exercise were now well established and, nevertheless, a large percentage of the population was still not committing what was necessary to reap the rewards. Sugar coating the perception of what exercise comprised was designed to address this contradiction. In 1998, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) issued a position stand to provide recommendations regarding the quantity and quality of exercise necessary to achieve physical fitness. Compared with their original version, which was issued in 1978, a key difference with this one was an appreciation for the distinction between physical activity as it relates to health versus fitness. Specifically, it was suggested that the quantity and quality of exercise that was required to achieve “health-related benefits” might be different compared to what is necessary for fitness. The end result was that exercise/physical activity for health and fitness was presented in the context of an exercise dose continuum, which meant that benefits were thought to occur in proportion with the total volume of exercise that was performed. The ACSM position stand of 1998 emphasized how much exercise you have to do to improve your health, but it downplayed how hard you have to work while you are meeting that goal. For example, the article states that as long you perform exercise above “the minimum intensity threshold” (suggested to be a work rate that requires your heart to beat at 55% of its maximal rate), improvement will be similar regardless of whether lower-intensity activities are performed for longer duration or higher-intensity ones are done for shorter periods.

by Dr. Fred DiMenna, Ph.D., C.S.C.S. What is more, the authors stressed that if you chose the low-intensity approach, the longer duration did not have to be accumulated in one session. This meant that all of the physical activities you performed throughout your day counted as “exercise” if you reached the minimum intensity threshold while doing them. The bottom line was that as long as you accumulated the requisite amount of energy expenditure (~700-2000 kilocalories per week was suggested as an appropriate range), you were on your way to achieving the many health benefits of physical activity. While the importance of intensity was mentioned in the 1998 position stand (“programs involving higher intensities and/or greater frequency/durations provide additional benefits”), it was clearly deemphasized (“many significant health benefits are achieved by going from a sedentary state to a minimal level of physical activity”). Indeed, the authors even suggested that for most adults, moderate exercise for longer duration was better because “a high proportion of the adult population is both sedentary and has at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.” The end result was that programs comprising gardening, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and parking further from the supermarket took center stage. In recent years, the pendulum has again swung and there is a renewed appreciation for volume of exercise per unit time (i.e., how hard you are working while you exercise) compared to volume per se. The proliferation of research focused on high-intensity interval training exemplifies this shift as does the most recent update of the ACSM position stand, which was published in 2011. In this version, the dose-response relationship between chronic physical activity and health-related benefits is still stressed; however, an accompanying section raises an important question: “For the same volume of energy expended, is vigorous-intensity exercise associated with additional (cardiometabolic) risk reduction?” Unfortunately, many of the initial studies that compared moderate and vigorous exercise could not be referenced to answer this question because energy expenditure was not matched across groups. Consequently, the degree to which greater responses in the higher-intensity group could be attributed to intensity per se as opposed to the greater total amount of energy that was expended when following the program could not be determined. However, the position stand lists a number of recent studies that have matched energy expenditure and findings from these suggest that exercise intensity is, indeed, an important determinant of the physiological responses to training.

HERBS FOR THE BEST WORKOUT by David Bunting, Director of Herbal Affairs, Herb Pharm Herbs for workout and athletic performance have all too often focused solely on depleting adrenal stimulation. While a pre-workout cup of coffee can be a great boost, there are far more benefits to be had from herbs. These include adaptogens that can both energize and support adrenals and immunity. Eleuthero is member of the ginseng family found predominantly in the eastern Russian region historically known as Siberia. The herb was formerly called Siberian ginseng, a marketing name developed to draw attention to its energizing and adaptogenic characteristics. Today, U.S. law mandates that the name “ginseng” can only be applied to plants in the genus Panax, to which true Asian and American ginseng belong. Fitting to its origin, most of the scientific work on Eleuthero has been carried out in Russia. A Russian scientist searching for native plants with properties similar to Asian ginseng began looking at other ginseng family plants. He focused on Eleuthero and through the process developed the concept of adaptogens. Adaptogens are defined as non-toxic substances that have a normalizing effect on the body and elicit a non-specific response to stress and a wide variety of stressors. Studies on eleuthero have been carried out on thousands of Russians coping with a variety of stressful conditions. These included work, exercise, athletic training and performance and even space travel. Russian workers, Olympic athletes and cosmonauts alike have shown improved stamina, physical endurance, performance and recovery. To this end, eleuthero appears to improve oxygen intake and utilization and energy production, both prime factors for effective workouts. Studies on large populations of workers have shown substantially improved resistance to infection as well as these other parameters. In one study conducted under the harsh conditions of a mining plant, incidence of influenza and acute respiratory disease among workers taking Eleuthero decreased 2.4 times compared to a control group. Eleuthero also enhances resistance to environmental factors such as sound, heat and cold. It is a superior herb for supporting the adrenals in long-term exhaustion, drug use (including caffeinated beverages) and excessive chronic stress. Eleuthero enhances both mental and physical stamina, endurance and performance, improving ability and capacity for exercise, cognitive function and demanding physical and mental work. It was the subject of a positive German Commission E monograph in 1991 for invigoration during fatigue and declining capacity for work and concentration. Despite its established use in these areas, in 1996 a patent was awarded to a U.S. company for a product consisting solely of Eleuthero marketed under the name ciwujia (the Chinese name for the plant) used for “enhancing stamina and physical performance during exercise and for enhancing recovery following cessation of exercise.”

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) root contains a series of unique triterpenoid saponins called eleutherosides that are credited with a bulk of its activity. It does not contain caffeine and it is not depleting. Eleuthero is non-androgenic and energetically balanced, making it well suited for both men and women. Eleuthero carries the highest safety rating awarded in the Botanical Safety Handbook and has no known interactions with drugs. In today’s market, saw palmetto is nearly always identified as an herb for men, specifically for prostate. Yet traditionally, saw palmetto has been successfully used for both men and women. It is classed as a nutritive tonic, meaning that it possesses nurturing, building and tonifying properties. As a digestive tonic, saw palmetto enhances the function of digestive organs, improving digestion and very importantly, enhancing assimilation. Here it is used where there is a desire to add healthy body mass. Saw palmetto also has a long history of use as a nutritive tonic for sexual organs in women and men in cases of deficiency, wasting or under-development. Saw palmetto berry (Serenoa repens) provides high quantities of fatty acids mixed with flavonoids and a variety of phytosterols. It carries the highest safety class rating awarded by the Botanical Safety Handbook and has no known interactions with drugs. Sarsaparilla root, like saw palmetto, is another rich source of phytosterols. It has a long history of use as what is commonly known as a blood purifier. More specifically, sarsaparilla is useful in inflammatory conditions associated with intense exercise and overexercise. These include exercise-induced inflammation of tendons, ligaments and joints that can be associated with certain movements like squats, cardio and intensive weight lifting. Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii and Smilax aristolochiifolia) also carries a high safety profile without known drug interactions. Gotu Kola herb is most commonly known in the U.S. for memory enhancement. Some of its most extensive use however, is for skin and connective tissue. Gotu kola contains asiaticoside, which stimulates the production of collagen and promotes the general integrity, vascularization, repair and regeneration of injured tendons, ligaments and joints. Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) is free of caffeine and should not be confused with kola nut (cola nut), the popular beverage source of caffeine. Gotu kola bears a high safety rating with no known drug interactions. In addition to diet, timing of meals, and nutrient supplements, botanicals can offer great all around system support to maximize your workout and maintain health. THE TRUTH ABOUT TAP WATER AND HOW WE CAN PROTECT OURSELVES All of Long Island’s drinking water is drawn from underground reservoirs, known as aquifers, which means we rely on groundwater for 100% of our drinking water. The EPA has set standards for more than 80 contaminants that may occur in drinking water and pose a risk to human health. The New York Times reported that in the last three years, more than 9,400 of the 25,000 U.S. sewage systems have violated the law by dumping untreated or partially treated human waste, chemicals and other hazardous materials into rivers, lakes and other waterways. If your home uses well water, chances are your water has been contaminated by many toxic substances that have been dumped and continue to be dumped into the soil such as: Herbicides, Pesticides, Estrogen-mimicking Hormones, Drug Residues, Heavy Metals. Since the EPA does not monitor or treat private well drinking water, you need to test once a year to see what harmful contaminants you're pumping into your home every day. If you rely on a government regulated water facility, unfortunately, you cannot trust officials to keep the water safe and clean. You need to be concerned with the disinfection by-products (DBPs) that form when disinfectants used to treat drinking water react with naturally occurring materials in the water. The predominant by-products that result from use of chlorine as a disinfectant are Trihalomethanes - THMs (chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and dibromochloromethane) and Haloacetic acids - HAAs (monochloro-, dichloro-, trichloro-, monobromo-, dibromo-). These DBPs are incredibly toxic! Trihalomethanes (THMs) are Cancer Group B carcinogens, meaning they've been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. The EPA regulates four members of the trihalomethane family, the best known of which is Chloroform. Today, the U.S. government classifies chloroform as a “probable” human carcinogen. California officials consider it a “known” carcinogen. Hundreds more are unregulated. Scientists suspect that trihalomethanes in drinking water may cause thousands of cases of bladder cancer every year. Studies show that these chemicals have also been linked to colon and rectal cancer, birth defects, low birth weight and miscarriage. Research shows there are more than 140 chemicals in U.S. drinking water that are not regulated by the EPA. This includes gasoline, pesticides, rocket fuel, prescription drugs and more. As reported in New Scientist, a comprehensive survey of U.S. drinking water revealed the 11 most frequently detected pharmaceuticals were: • Atenolol, a beta-blocker used to treat cardiovascular disease • Atrazine, an anti-histamine used to treat allergies • Carbamazepine, a mood-stabilizing drug used to treat bipolar disorder • Estrone, an estrogen hormone blamed for causing gender changes in fish • Gemfibrozil, an anti-cholesterol drug

• Meprobamate, a tranquilizer used in psychiatric treatment • Naproxen, a painkiller and anti-inflammatory linked to increases in asthma incidence • Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy • Sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic • TCEP, a reducing agent used in molecular biology • Trimethoprim, an antibiotic You are not only DRINKING these contaminates, you are also inhaling and absorbing them through the pores of your skin. During a shower, the combination of what your skin absorbs and what your lungs inhale adds up to more than 8 glasses of water. The concentrations of chlorine in your shower could also be damaging your hair, drying your skin, irritating your eyes and affecting proteins throughout your

“Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than those whose water does not contain chlorine.” -U.S. Council of Environmental Quality entire body. If you and your children enjoy swimming in a pool, you may want to know according to the American Journal of Epidemiology, swimming in traditional and salt water chlorinated pools boosts bladder cancer risk by 57%. Let’s not forget about food preparation. High quality water is essential to ensuring you receive the best nutrition possible from your organic foods since these contaminants quickly get absorbed while you are washing and boiling them. If you consume water that is filled with toxins leached from plastic (BPA), or filled with byproducts from chlorination, or with VOCs (volatile organic compounds), or water that is contaminated by pesticides, hormones or pharmaceuticals, you are overwhelming your body. Your body requires a CLEAN source of water to detoxify and eliminate your daily toxic buildup, without that, toxins will win the battle. We all know we need to kill the bacteria found in our water source to avoid bacterial infections, but we don’t want to come down with cancer in the process! You want to be healthier. There is a better way. A whole home water filtration system is often the easiest, most affordable choice. It offers convenience and peace of mind knowing you’re doing your best to protect you and your children from the health hazards of unfiltered tap water. If you have a chlorinated pool and are concerned…an Ultraviolet (UV) pool filtration system might be another great choice. healthEhabitatsTM understands that every home is different and each person is unique. That is why they offer many products and services to accommodate any situation or concern. You should contact a healthEhabitats expert to evaluate and test your home’s water to help provide you with the information you need to make the best choices for your family. How to Win a Triathlon (In 8 Simple Steps) An endurance athlete, like a triathlete, is a special breed. It takes incredible pain tolerance to swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and then run 13 miles. All without a rest. The capacity to endure great pain is the key trait of any championship athlete. The importance of this trait suggests that it should be a hotbed of research activity, but I assure you it is not. Look in any sport psychology text and amazingly you will find very little written about pain tolerance and how to develop it. So let us try to shed light upon this Dr. Tom Ferraro, Sport Psychologist for much-neglected subject. Long Island The first question about endurance competitions is why any athlete would want to do it in the first place. The answers are easy enough to see. My patients have told me various reasons - that they compete to reduce stress, improve fitness, lose weight, find friends, keep young, experience the joy of competition and to travel. Many endurance events are held in exotic places, like the Ironman, in Kona, Hawaii. And there are deeper, psychological motives as well “What does it take to such as“running away”from one’s past, improving self-image and overcoming a sense of failure. The tougher question is how does one go about helping the endurance athlete to actually improve pain tolerance and therefore improve his or her time? Well believe it or not, there are ways. Here are eight simple ways to improve your pain tolerance and your race time: 1) Improve your fitness. Research shows you will tolerate pain better if you are fitter. 2) Do not fear pain: Many athletes have deep anxiety about pain and often think of it as dangerous. This will always cause one to avoid that anxious feeling and thus slow down. 3) Do not hate the pain: The famous writer and marathoner Haruki Murakami once said “pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” This suggests that

pain needs to be viewed in a certain way. Pain is not a bad thing unto itself and thus ought not to be hated. 4) Label the pain as a good thing: You can view pain as an experience that is improving you in all ways. As Arnold ‘The Terminator’ Schwarzenegger used to say“no pain, no gain.”The statement became iconic because it’s the truth. When you are experiencing pain, you are often improving your body and your life. 5) Talk strategy before the race: This will help you to pace yourself correctly. 6) Use visualization: Rehearse competing without pain. Do this as often as you can. Visualization is a form of self-hypnosis and it re programs your mind and body. 7) Talk over the race when finished: Endurance athletes like triathletes as well as runners, bikers and swimmers experience lots of things during the race and it helps to talk it all out afterwards. This is called ventilation and it helps you to get out any residual bad feelings and helps you to learn and to re-orient yourself to the next race. 8) Use distraction techniques: Learn how to occupy your mind with things during the race. Using Zen techniques like listening and watching for all things in nature helps relax the mind and enter the zone. I work with triathletes as well as runners, bikers and swimmers and teach them how to use these techniques in combination with hypnosis and autogenics. Racing can be pretty tough and it helps to know some of the tricks of win an Ironman?” the trade in order to feel less pain, increase inner fortitude and therefore improve your times. Even in a physical sport like racing, the mind is a key part of winning. And running with a positive attitude is a big help. ON THE COVER: Natalie Jill Tell us a little about yourself...where you were born and raised, were you into fitness as a child? I am a Licensed Master Sports Nutritionist and Functional Fitness trainer who focuses on bodyweight training that does NOT take a lot of time and Nutrition based on real, natural and unprocessed foods. I was born and raised in the Washington DC area and although I never played sports, I was always very active. It was later however, that my passion for fitness really started to thrive. Nutrition was ALWAYS an interest to me. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with celiac sprue years ago that I took an even bigger interest in studying nutrition and how foods effect our body, mood, energy level and disease. How did you get into fitness? I was always “interested” in fitness and I studied nutrition, but it wasn’t until I hit a rock bottom place in my life that fitness and nutrition helped me out of my depression, turned my life around and allowed me to launch my business NatalieJillFitness. My background was always sales and marketing prior to moving over to fitness full time. The funny thing is, that when I was in sales and marketing, the highlight of my day was always when I was working out or talking about fitness and nutrition. It was at one time just a dream to work in my passion… now I live it daily! What is your style of fitness, what is your favorite activity? I am a fan of functional fitness training that uses primarily your own body weight. Everything I do and teach focuses on stabilizer muscles, progression, CORE training and intensity. I teach proper fitness that is RESORATIVE for bodies. When doing my exercises, bodies change, pain goes away and movement happens easier. Describe a typical workout from start to finish that you do... Although I am active everyday, I have focused concentrated intense workout 3-4 days a week. This is primarily body weight stuff. It is INTENSE! Lots of Pullups, Chinups, Sled Pulls, Dips, Pushups, Plank Variations, Handstand Pushups and Sprints. I get creative with body weight training ideas. If I DO use equipment, it is some sort of functional training equipment like stability balls, BOSU, equaliz-

er bars, Olympic rings, bars or benches. How many times a week/how often/what other fitness related activities do you do... I am active daily and do walking, sometimes hiking and just generally get “moving.” I do not like to sit for very long. My FAVORITE activity is hiking and a few months ago, I did a Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike in the same day! I live near the beach with lots of hills around my neighborhood so just even walking around is something I love to do daily. What do you do mentally, spiritually and emotionally to stay in shape… I am a HUGE believer of the law of attraction and having the right mindset. If you BELIEVE you can achieve things, you WILL. As soon as you start believing in doubt and failure, you have given up. What is your diet like (vegan, allergy/gluten free, clean, etc) I am a fan of eating an unprocessed food diet. Natural, real foods are the way to go and THAT is heavily plant-based for me. I do not count calories and I do not eat at scheduled intervals. I listen to my body, eat real, natural unprocessed foods and THAT is what I teach and what is on all of my programs. I AM gluten free (I am a celiac and need to be), BUT, what people don’t realize is that if you eat an unprocessed food diet, that IS eating gluten free. There is no gluten in meats, nuts, fruits, vegetables, potatoes or fats. Do you take supplements, if so what... I do take just a few. I get most of my nutrients from REAL food but a few things I do add is a good quality whey protein, a natural energy drink (just B vitamins and caffeine), and sometimes BCAA’s. Words of advice for our readers... We all have excuses- EVERYONE has them. We can choose to let them define us and hold us back, or we can choose to consistently look for solutions. There are solutions for everyone. It may take some longer, it may be more challenging, it may be harder, but there IS a solution for everyone as long as you want to find it. I always say, “Excuses or Solutions… YOU decide!” Describe your DVD and how it’s unique... Rev4 is four ten minute workouts that use just your own body weight and really focuses on strengthening the core and revving up your metabolism. The workouts can be done anywhere with NO equipment. They are short, to the point and extremely effective and they are very restorative for people! Especially those that deal with lower back pain. THE GMO DECEPTION: What You Need to Know! “Science is science, declared my college biology professor alluding to its own rigorous standards, openness and integrity. Today, my response would be ‘not quite.’ For in the autocratic, commercially driven hands of multinational corporations, “science” becomes the instrument of an overall business plan that results in serious corruptions of scientific attitude, method and peerreviewed accountability. This confidential corporate science closes off Alfred North Whitehead’s definition of science as keeping options open for revision,” so states consumer health activist Ralph Nader in the forward of the new book “The GMO Deception: What You Need to Know about the Food, Corporations, and Government Agencies Putting Our Families and Our Environment at Risk” Edited by Sheldon Krimsky and Jeremy Gruber (June 2014, Skyhorse Publishing).

Seventy-five percent of processed foods on supermarket shelves, from soda to soup, crackers to condiments, contain genetically engineered ingredients. The long-term effects of these foods on human health and ecology are still unknown, and public concern has been steadily intensifying. This new book from the Council for Responsible Genetics gathers the best, most thoughtprovoking essays by the leading scientists, science writers and public health advocates. It addresses the health, environmental, social, ethical, moral, religious and cultural dilemmas that GMOs (genetically modified organisms) create. Collectively, the essays, some dating back to the early 1990’s when GMOs were first approved, address such questions as: * Are GM foods safe and healthy for us? * Will GM food really solve world hunger? * Who really controls the power structure of food production? * Are GM foods ecologically safe and sustainable? * Why is it so difficult to get GM foods labeled in the US? * What kinds of regulations and policies should be

instituted? * How is seed biodiversity, of lack thereof, affecting developing countries? * Should animals be genetically modified for food? * How are other countries handling GM crops? One essay “Consumers Call on FDA to Label GMO Foods” talks about the intentional deception that the FDA, a government agency vested with protecting public health, engages in outright deception. Under George Bush I’s rule, GMOs were fast-tracked onto the market by just accepting biotech’s word that GMOs were safe for public consumption. The FDA didn’t require independent testing and declared GMOs to be “substantially equivalent” to conventional food. The FDA refuses to this day to require labeling for GMOs. Even China, the land of dubious products that poison consumers and pets, requires GMO labeling. Even though 90% of the American public want to be able to decide whether they want to eat GMO food or not, the FDA continues to deceive the public. Any why should they? Many policies concerning the non-lableing of GMO’s were enforced by the former head of the FDA, Michael Taylor, who was Monsanto’s chief lawyer. It was Taylor who pushed through acceptance of bovine growth factor in milk under Bush’s reign. Then he returned as FDA head under Obama for a second round of fascist corporate-government collusion. In another essay, “Bill Gates’ Excellent African Adventure: A Tale of Technocratic AgroIndustrial Philanthrocapitalism” (don’t you just love it?!), Bill Gates, the man whom everyone puts on a pedestal, wants to remake the world in his own vision. Here is a man who knows everything about computers but nothing about Africa, its people, its agriculture, the natural flora and fauna of Africa, or working with the land in a sustainable way. Thank God he has oodles and oodles of money to dictate to the African people how they should grow their own food and solve the starvation issue. But, his ideas of industrial, high-tech agriculture run counter to sustainability recommendations set forth by the UN and even the World Bank. In this book you will learn about the bald faced lies biotech companies tell - from claiming GMOs will end world starvation to hiding crucial scientific data concerning adverse health effects of GMOs (claiming “confidential business information”) to the revolving door between government regulators and industry (ie, the 2X case of Michael Taylor), to the fact that once GMOs are fully unleashed upon the world, all of life will be irreversibly polluted with corporate patents demanding royalties due. No nation is truly secure with biotech companies running amok. Food security should be the number one concern of all nations, more so than any terrorist attacks. Ultimately, this book encourages discourse on the social, environmental, and moral ramifications of where this particular kind of biotechnology is taking us, and what we can do about it. Edited by Sheldon Krimsky and Jeremy Gruber of the Council for Responsible Genetics, with a foreword by Ralph Nader, The GMO Deception gives voice to some of the world's most distinguished scientists, science writers, and public health advocates, including Michael Hansen, Vandana Shiva, Frances Moore Lappé, Bill Freese, John Fagan, Michael Antoniou, Claire Robinson, and Doug Gurian-Sherman, among others. Sheldon Krimsky is the Carol Zicklin Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Brooklyn College, the Lenore Stern Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tufts University, and adjunct professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at the School of Medicine at Tufts University. Jeremy Gruber, JD, is the president and executive director of the Council for Responsible Genetics. He is a founder and executive committee member of the Coalition for Genetic Fairness. He is regularly featured in print, on the radio, and on television. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. For more info, www.skyhorsepublishing.com and www.gene-watch.org

10 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR ESSENTIAL SELF One day, you wake up and realize that you're thirty years old, or forty or fifty or sixty or seventy, and you ask yourself: What am I doing? Usually, we only reexamine our lives at the start of these decades, almost like New Year's. At the New Year, we make our resolutions. Along about May, we realize we haven't accomplished a thing. We've started and stopped, and we're back in the same old patterns. Now, I'm going to ask you to do something different. I'm going to ask you to start by emptying your life, so you can understand who you are and what your life could be. Think of all the mistakes you've made. Think of all the things that have blocked you. Let's take everything out and see what works and what doesn't. Imagine you've taken all your socks out of your sock drawer to see which ones match and which don't. You find all these socks that don't match. Maybe you throw them away, but maybe you don't. A part of you doesn't want to throw anything away. What if you emptied yourself and then only put back what would serve the essential self? And how do we know what's essential when part of what we collect is our identity? Here are my 10 Steps to Finding Your Essential Self:

Step 1. Clean Out and Start Over Think of your wardrobe. What would change if you cleaned it out and told yourself that you wanted all new clothes? I used to drive my friends to despair because every two years I would completely redo my apartment in a different style. My friends would say, "You're changing your apartment again, Gary? Why are you going through all this effort?" And I would answer, "Because I'm bored with the old decor and part of the excitement of life is creating something new."

Step 2. Examine How You Compensate for Feelings of Inadequacy Some of the ways we compensate are by never fully relaxing, never wanting to let go, never truly being in the moment, always planning, and having to control everything. When we feel inadequate, what we're really feeling is vulnerable, and we don't want anyone to know, so we protect our vulnerabilities by disguising them. Everyone has mastered something, whether it's shining shoes or cutting hair or making clothes or broadcasting the news. But, can we really grow by repeating what we do well and eliminating the very thought of what we can't, just to avoid feeling inadequate?

by Gary Null PhD

Step 3. Explore What's Missing from Your Life and How That Lack Affects You To know what's missing from your life, you have to take the time to go into that conscious focus called mindful meditation. Be present in the moment and be mindful of what you would ideally like in your life. Find out for yourself: This is the kind of friend I want, the kind of body, the health, the career, the quality of time for self or others, and where I'd like to live. Sometimes, there's a discrepancy between our desires and our circumstances, which creates conflict: Everyone who has a desire for A but is living at C. You can either a) change so you can at least have a chance of manifesting your ideal; or b) adapt to the pain of not living your ideal. It's going to be one or the other, and I'm hoping it will be number one.

Step 4. Ask Yourself Whether You Possess All the Resources and Openness to Change and Grow Learn to accept that change cannot be rushed, nor can it be delayed. Delaying is procrastination. It is diversion. Notice how clever your mind is in distracting yourself from what you need to be doing. Look at how ingenious the excuses are. Do you say, ‘I don't have the tools, so I can't do it’ instead of saying, ‘Let me get the tools I need’? You're either going to move forward or you're going to stand still. If you stand still, watch how you react to this negative adaptation: You'll feel bitter, angry, and self-righteously indignant at the world because you're not happy. You'll blame everything on circumstances. “If only….” if only…what? If only you were rich, or black, or white, or taller or shorter, or smarter? No. These are immaterial to a happy life. Find the attitude and the tools you need to create your own change instead of making excuses for staying stuck.

Step 5. Recognize That Distraction Diminishes the Present Moment Eliminate distractions. The average person is now watching television for almost six hours a day. How much time do you use up in a day distracting yourself? Think of all the phone calls and texting that is meaningless. Why not just say, I am not going to engage in anything that distracts me from what I need to balance my life. Take all the distractions away and what are you left with? Just you. What would happen with just you? Are you afraid to find out? A lot of people can't talk about themselves because they don't know who they are. That's the result of the distraction factor.

THE MORE BEAUTIFUL WORLD OUR HEARTS KNOW IS POSSIBLE: “Doing” All of these flavors of scarcity share a common root, a kind of existential scarcity for which I cannot find a name. It is a scarcity of being, the feeling “I am not enough” or “There is not enough life.” Born of the cutoff of our extended selves that inter-exist with the rest of the universe, it never lets us rest. It is a consequence of our alienation, our abandonment to a dead, purposeless universe of force and mass, a universe in which we can never feel at home, a universe in which we are never held by an intelligence greater than our own, never part of an unfolding purpose. Even more than the scarcity of time or money, it is this existential unease that drives the will to consume and control. The primary habit that arises from it is the habit of always doing. Here and now is never enough. You might protest that most people in the Western world spend vast amounts of time doing nothing productive at all, watching TV and playing video games, but these are displacements of doing, and not non-doing. I am not saying that it is bad to do. I am saying that there is a time to do, and a time not to do, and that when we are slave to the habit of doing we are unable to distinguish between them. As I mentioned earlier, the time to do is when you know what to do. When you don’t know what to do, and act anyway, you are probably acting out of habit. Let’s not get too caught up in the word “do”—obviously, the distinction between doing and not doing breaks down under close scrutiny. Perhaps an example will make my meaning clearer. I recently participated in a daylong meeting of about thirty activists from around the world, gathered around the issue of localism. We’d all been speakers at a conference. The day started with a conversation that, after an hour or two, started to touch on some deep issues of how to create change. But then, some of us were uncomfortable with what we perceived as “just talking” (or was it that we were uncomfortable with the deeper things we were touching?), so we split up into task-centered groups to “do something.” Part of our group consciousness believed that if we didn’t produce an action plan, a statement, or something tangible from the day, it would have been a waste. As it turned out, it was the afternoon that felt like the waste, and the

by Charles Eisenstein

morning that felt productive— despite the fact that nothing got “done.” Perhaps the problem was that we had rushed into an attempt to “do” before the group as an entity was mature. We acted from a habit of urgency. Again, that is not to say we should never make plans, organize task groups, delegate work, or engage in linear, step-by-step thinking. It is that we need to acquire sensitivity to when it is the right time to do these things. We are like a man lost in a maze. He runs around frantically, hitting the same dead ends again and again, repeatedly circling back to his starting point. Finally he pauses to rest, to breathe, to ponder. Then in a flash he understands the logic of the maze. Now, it is time to begin walking. Imagine if instead he says, “No, I cannot pause to rest. Only by moving my feet will I ever get anywhere. So I must not stop moving my feet.” We tend to devalue those periods of pause, emptiness, silence, and integration. How to get out of a maze? Yes, it does help to wander around and explore, but at some point, one must stop and reflect. Is there a pattern to my wanderings? What do I remember about how I got lost here in the first place? What is this maze for, anyway? Perhaps the earlier stage of panicked, frantic running around, or of increasingly futile action, is necessary, but many of us are now ready to try another way. The situation on Earth today is too dire for us to act from habit—to reenact again and again the same kinds of solutions that brought us to our present extremity. Where does the wisdom to act in entirely new ways come from? It comes from nowhere, from the void; it comes from inaction. When we see it, we realize it was right in front of us all along. It is never far away; yet at the same time, it is in a different universe—a different story of the World. A Chinese saying describes it well: “As far away as the horizon, and right in front of your face.” You can run toward it forever, run faster and faster, and never get any closer. Only when you stop, do you realize you are already there. That is exactly our collective situation right now. All of the solutions to the global crisis are sitting right in front of us, but they are invisible to our collective seeing, existing. JUICING FOR HEALTH: Just Say No to Nutritionally Void Food! by Christine Lynn Harvey, Editor-in-Chief The whole food system is set up to allow large multinational corporations to profit at the expense of your health. Big Agra favors chemical soil amendments and pesticides at the expense of the soil, which is a living, breathing entity, one that provides nutrients to plants, which in turn provides nutrients to you. Our food is void of any meaningful nutrition and many of the diseases millions now suffer from - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer and obesity are due in part to nutritional deficiencies. Americans overeat and are fat because they are not getting their vital nutrients from real food. They are enticed at every opportunity to consume calorie dense, nutritionally fake food. GMOs are found in all processed foods through the addition of soy and corn, seed oils (corn, canola (also called rapeseed), soy, cottonseed) as well as corn/beet sugars. One third of all products in the supermarket contain corn. GMOs have been "designed" to carry a pesticide within the crop itself and/or withstand heavy pesticide spraying. GMOs are in the bulk of processed foods - frozen, boxed and canned meals, breakfast cereals, snacks and desserts. Read your food labels! Anything that lists corn or soy, corn/soy/canola/cottonseed oil, hydrogenated oil, corn syrup, beet sugar is GMO. Anything that does not have a USDA Organic label is GMO. That means stay away from non-organic soy milk and tofu, any kind of corn products, (including tortilla chips and popcorn), peanut butter in a jar (Skippy contains cottonseed, soy and rapeseed oil to prevent separation), all fried foods and frying oils (all GMO seed oils), breakfast cereals and instant meal type foods. Multinational corporations have pushed hundreds of thousands of small farm operators out of business. Locally grown organic food is better for health and the environment for several reasons. First, vital nutrients are lost when conventional food is picked before full maturity and stored for weeks, often months before consumption; Second, food does not have to travel thousands of miles using fossil fuels that produce green house gases to get to your plate (Hawaiian pineapples are among the most carbon intensive of foods, contributing about 40 pounds of CO2 per pound of pineapple); thirdly, organic food production does not use petroleum products that kill the natural flora and fauna of the soil which is vital for creating pest- and disease-resistant plants, boosting vital nutrients for human health and conserving water and soil fertility (humus holds water and prevents the loss of topsoil via erosion). While there are some 75,000 known plants that are edible and even more nutritious than what people traditionally consume as part of their diet - only 12 vegetables are the mainstay for consumption. Genetic diversity of crops around the world have been lost due to heavy emphasis on growing commodified foods (GMO corn and soy). The focus is on cheaply, quickly produced foods that are heavily processed solely to make a profit. The corporatization and commodification of food has resulted in an epidemic of preventable chronic diseases and a chasm between food producers and consumers - how our food is actually produced and all the unethical and destructive practices that go with it. We have become a very sick nation indeed, in body, mind and spirit. Now that all the bad news is out of the way, awareness is everything and you can do something about it! By buying locally produced organic fruits and vegetables, you can use the wonders of juicing and raw foods to boost your health and save the environment. People who start juicing report astounding increases in physical and mental energy, less aches and pains, decreased hunger, a glowing complexion and a general sense of wellbeing. Juicing is part of a raw foodist's diet, however, you don't have to go completely raw in order to benefit from incorporating more raw fruits and veggies in your diet. Juicing is a good way to have the vital nutrients of whole foods quickly enter your bloodstream. Juice contains natural enzymes and phytochemicals which improve digestion, decrease inflammation, boost immunity against disease and help the body detoxify itself. Juice also contains pure amino acids, essential fatty acids and more. The only thing juice is missing is fiber, so make sure you still consume whole foods. So now that you have decided to start juicing, you must get a good juicer that will stand up to the test. There are many different kinds of juicers on the market, but, juicers fall into two main categories centrifugal and masticating. The Omega NC800 HDS Masticating Juicer

DIFFERENT KINDS OF JUICERS Centrifugal juicers are more common and more affordable. They typically have an upright design in which food is pushed into a rapidly spinning mesh chamber with sharp teeth at the bottom, similar to a food processor. The teeth pulverize the food into a pulp and the centrifugal force pulls the juice out of the pulp and through the mesh filter, where it is channeled out of the juicer. Centrifugal juicers work best with soft and hard fruits and vegetables, but not as well with leafy greens like kale or spinach, or with wheatgrass. Masticating juicers compress fruits and vegetables through a large drill called an auger. Because a centrifugal juicer works more like a food processor, friction is involved, and therefore, heat is produced which causes the antioxidants and enzymes in the juice to degrade faster. Masticating juicers process leafy greens and wheatgrass better. Masticating juicers are a little more expensive, but worth the cost. If you are concerned about nutrient content and vitality of food (meaning keeping the natural enzymes found in plants intact), you will want to invest in a masticating juicer that juices at low speeds and does not heat the juice up. Omega is one brand that manufactures high quality masticating juicers for home and commercial use. Omega has been manufacturing juicers since the 1950's! Omega's NC800 HDS masticating juicer juices at low speeds of 80 RPM minimizing heat build-up and oxidation. Low speed helps to protect healthy enzymes, prevent oxidation and allow juice to be stored up to 72 hours without degradation. With the NC800

HDS, there are 5 settings for more efficient juicing - Setting 1 for citrus fruits and Setting 5 for more fibrous produce (i.e. wheatgrass). The juicer features a larger hopper/feed chute which allows you to spend less time chopping down your fruits and veggies to fit into the chute, produces high juice yield and very dry pulp extraction. It has a handle for easy use and a quiet motor. There is also an astounding 15-year warrantee on parts and labor! With an Omega Nutrition Center Juicer, you can also make all-natural seed and nut butters (almond, chia seed, pumpkin), baby food, nut and grain milks (almond, soy and oat milk), salsa, raw soups, dips and sauces like pesto and hummus, and a variety of healthy snacks. Have fun making your family fresh fruit and veggie juices, green drinks, sorbets, smoothies and more. Mince herbs, extrude pasta and also grind coffee. GARY NULL’S 10 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR ESSENTIAL SELF Step 6. Confront the Fears That Come with Change When it comes to change, the risks have to be faced. We need to see a situation for what it is. Only then are we ready for true healthy change. If we keep looking and distorting and repackaging and refraining and refocusing because the change is not acceptable, then all we're doing is playing the game of manipulating illusions. When we feel uncomfortable about making a change, we avoid it or put a pretty face on it. Hopefully, one day we will wake up and say: Why am I doing this?

Step 7. Learn the Lessons of Your Crises Every crisis carries its lesson. Let me give you an example. I know a woman approaching forty (let's call her Cynthia) who invited a troubled friend (let's call him Joe) to stay with her. Cynthia is an activist in the peace movement. The situation with Joe is stressful, and she frequently blows up: "This guy gives me no privacy and is very jealous. He wants to know every place I go. But I can't ask him to leave - where would he go? What would he do?" I suggested she ask Joe what he intended to do with his life (which had nothing to do with her life). Then, I asked her what she intended to do with her own life. She wasn't having a relationship with Joe. He was the man who came to dinner and never left. She said, "I know, but…" Cynthia was getting much of her sense of self from taking people home so she could rescue them. She needed to be needed. Why? Because she believed that her value as a human being lay in saving people. But was Joe growing and changing? If you have someone staying with you for a year and you're taking him to yoga and meditation and nature outings and he's no different, then it's time to reassess. He hadn't changed. He had just gotten a year of free room and board and hanging-out time. Joe needs to get out and support himself. Cynthia is caught between two worlds: anger at her loss of freedom and autonomy and the need to show that she's caring and nurturing. What are the results for her? Refortification of an old belief system. And Joe? He hasn't been truly helped, and he hasn't changed. When we learn the lessons contained in our crises, then we can grow. Any lesson you don't learn you will repeat over and over again. The universe is good about giving us many lessons. Sometimes divorce, bankruptcy, separation, or loss of a job or business is the lesson we've been given. We just think: Get me out of here! But along with the pain and suffering, we have something to learn. When we can pass the test because we've learned from a lesson, we probably will not have to experience the same pain again.

Step 8. Appreciate Your Life Now: Don't Wait for Loss I know people who start anticipating their losses as they approach certain decade milestones. I'm hitting fifty and I can never think of myself as young again. I'm hitting forty, and the gray hair is coming in. I just talked with a woman of forty-nine. She said that her libido had been nonexistent for the last year. I asked her why. She said: Because I'm forty-nine, Gary. What guy gets up in the morning and thinks wow, I really want an aging out-of-shape forty-nine-year-old? No. They want young women. They want what I was when I was twenty-five and sexy and fun. I'm accepting it. Accepting what? Accepting that because you're forty-nine you should no longer have a libido? You should no longer be passionate? You should no longer allow that chi to flow? You should forget everything you can still do? How positive is it to think that when you hit fifty you're going to be less than you were at forty or forty-five? That's not a healthy mindset. So enjoy what you have every day because if you took away the calendar and no one knew how old you were, then age would just be a number. What if you lived your life as if age were only an insignificant number? Then you wouldn't adapt to preconceived notions of what you

should or shouldn't be doing at a certain age. Break the rules. Just be a living human being who does not care what age you are.

Step 9. Consider What You Have in Abundance Think of the things we all have in abundance. We have an abundance of people we can share positive energy with. We have an abundance of nature to enjoy, an abundance of love to give and receive from our companions. We have dogs, cats, birds, and fish for pets. We have an abundance of energy to focus on what we can bring into our lives: hobbies, skills, new tools. We have the wonderment of how many things we don't know. Even the knowledge of all the PhDs at a major university is like one grain of sand at the bottom of the ocean floor. If all this abundance of things to learn and to experience is there for us, why do we act as if we're paupers emotionally, intellectually, and physically? It's like a person saying: I'm starving. You say: Here's a buffet of three thousand foods that are all healthy. But I'm starving. Well, dig in. But I'm starving. Pick it up. Try it. I can't. Why? My belief system won't let me. Our belief system is our reality. We'd rather starve emotionally and spiritually than connect with the abundance of energy around us.

Step 10. How Can I Go from Here to There? How can I go from where I'm at to where I need to be? By realizing that you already have everything you need to take a step. If you're approaching or are sixty and you want to feel sixty, then you'll feel old. You'll feel less. You'll feel loss. You'll feel that a whole lot of life is behind you, only to be remembered by scrapbooks and occasional flashes of inspiration. Or you can say: I don't care how old I am and I don't care about the circumstances I've accepted. Today, I am focusing my energy in this moment on what I want to experience and I will seek out the tools. For every tool I seek out, I will surrender a tool that no longer works. Surrendering the tools that no longer work releases the energy that goes along with them. Don't allow your truth to be distorted by the bias of another. My truth works for me. Throughout my life, I've never felt that I fit in anywhere. So instead of trying to remold myself to fit into the narrow confines of society, I've chosen instead to expand my consciousness to wherever it would take me. Although there were risks, sacrifices, and pain, I know what is possible because my freedom took me to the top of the mountain and I saw the future. People's fear so often keeps them in the valley, and all they see is what's right in front of them. Think of the difference. I know you want a fully realized life, and this is what you can say to yourself: I am more than my beliefs. I am present for my own creation. Every day, I choose to recreate myself over again in the eyes of myself and not the world. I do not get my view of life through the eyes of others. I can see myself for who I am and what I want to be. It's through my own eyes, my spiritual eyes, that I see my journey ahead. It's society that sees my journey from behind. I'm either going to look ahead or look behind; I'm going to look with my eyes or theirs. Their eyes are going to be aligned and unified, and their strength will become my weakness because their strength allows me no independence and no autonomy. If I choose to look at life as a medium to which I can surrender by emptying out the negative and filling it with the new and the positive, then I'm taking a step that they're not going to take. They will hit forty, fifty, sixty, and seventy and be angry or depressed or look in a mirror and consider woefully what is no longer present. I will look in the mirror and say: See the potential of what still is.
